Two rich young Americans move to the Costa Rican jungle to start over. But one of them will end up dead and the other tried for murder three times. It starts with a dream, a nature reserve and a spectacular new home. But little by little, they lose it.
Bill Cowher
They actually lose it.
Dan Patrick
They sort of went nuts until one night, everything spins out of control. Listen to Hell in Heaven on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your costs. You are listening to the Dan Patrick show on Fox Sports Radio. Hope you had a great weekend everybody. It's our two on this Monday. More of your phone calls. Best and worst of the weekend. We'll talk to the hall of Fame. Coach Bill Cower stops by in about 20 minutes from now. Flacco around and find out. The T shirt will be available until Wednesday. Joe didn't live up to his end of the bargain by losing to the jets, but we'll keep it up there@danpatrick.com Stat of the Day brought to you by Panini America, the official trading cards of the program. Good morning. If you're watching on Peacock, our streaming service, download the app. If you haven't done so, we will update our poll results. We got baseball tonight, game three, series tied at a game a piece. And you also have the commanders at the Chiefs. And right now Patrick Mahomes is your leader for MVP according to DraftKings. It's kind of surprising that it feels like Patrick Mahomes might win the MVP by just being Patrick Mahomes. That he doesn't have to be, you know, 40, 45, 50 touchdown passes. He just has to be Patrick Mahomes. And that means, you know, two or three or four times. Oh my God, did you see that play? And then they end up winning a game in the final two minutes and that might be enough. Josh Allen, he beat you by by land and by air and doing it at a record setting pace and scoring touchdowns. Yes. Marvin D.P. the Chiefs are four and three. I know it'd be different if they had the Colts record. Then I could see, man, you know what, he's just consistent and they're really good. They're only one game over.500. Yeah, well, he's getting his weapons back. So it might be. Well, he kind of, you know, held serve here and kept them in, in the race here. Like, I don't, I'm surprised. But this according to DraftKings, Mahomes +125, Josh Allen second at +350. Then it's Drake May, Baker Mayfield and Matthew Stafford are tied. Jared Goff. Then it's Daniel Jones and Jonathan Taylor. Yeah, Paulie. Matthew Stafford has 17 touchdowns and two picks. Mahomes has 14 touchdowns and two picks. Mahomes is 11th in the league in quarterback rating. I mean, it's, he's having a nice year for him, but it's, it's not even special for him. Yeah. And people were trying to shoehorn Dak Prescott in that MVP conversation because his numbers were really good until he faced Denver yesterday. But, you know, maybe Dallas makes a move here. Trade deadline is, I think, next week. Could you get Max Crosby? Could you get Trey Hendrickson? Can you swing for the fences and get Miles Garrett? Because Jerry Jones has finally admitted, you know, maybe this defense isn't that good. The Ravens defense is terrible. And they shut down the Chicago Bears certainly after the first quarter. That's one of those games where things that make you go, hmm, okay, you're favored by six and a half. Okay, that means Lamar Jackson's playing. Until we found out Lamar Jackson wasn't playing. Then the line went down to one and a half and then they still ended up robbing up the Bears. The the home office is not going to be placed with the Baltimore Ravens. Mike Floria was written about this on Pro Football Talk where they might take away draft picks. Somebody could be fined. Yes, Pauline. According to NFL.com on Friday, right after practice, every NFL team lists the designation of full participant. Limited participant out Exact. He was listed on Friday as full participant in practice, which supported that six and a half line. Then they changed it on Saturday to limited participant. Jim John Harbaugh said it was a honest mistake. You can still, we've all made honest mistakes. You still gotta pay the price for it. And it might be an honest mistake. But the see, this comes down to the information here. This is about gambling. This is about making sure that everybody knows who's playing, not playing. And you know you're going to bet accordingly. Set your line, betting line accordingly. And if Lamar Jackson's playing and you're at home in a must, must, must win situation, that's why I said, man, they're favored by six and a half. And I said, what do they know? Well, did they know that Lamar was going to play? Did they think he was going to play? And the answer is yes. Then all of a sudden he's not playing. Now, I don't think you do gamesmanship here like the Bears, man. We're, we're not going to tell them what's going on. Okay. I'm sure the Bears are going well, Lamar is playing. He's. Where are you changing your defensive strategy philosophy? I think you could probably do that on the fly and say, let's go back to what we normally do against Lamar Jackson or what other teams do against Lamar Jackson. But that's where the home office cannot be thrilled at what happened in Baltimore. All right, Seaton, update the poll results or give us what we have for hour one and then what we're going to go with an hour two, by the way, next Tuesday at 4 Eastern, NFL trade deadline. Yeah, we got up there right now the best college football job opening right now. LSU, Penn State, Florida, other. Right now, LSU has about 58% of that vote, followed by Penn State and Florida. Not even really close for Penn State and Florida. Florida, man, you start to look at these payouts. James Franklin, 50 million, Brian Kelly, 54 million, Jimbo Fisher. I mean, it's become commonplace. And that's why I would not give anybody 10 years, five at the most. We're in it together. I'm going to pay you handsomely the first three years, and then after that we can renegotiate because it'll be a win. Win. But if you do 10 years, nine years, eight years, oh, my God, you're locked in. I mean, I get the feeling USC might have moved on from Lincoln Riley had he not had this long contract. But it feels like the boosters, everybody is lacking patience. Everybody. And it's, you know, you're not, you're not waiting. You don't get that opportunity. And Brian Kelly's a good coach. Good coach. James Franklin is a good coach. But this is a different world in college football. Nil transfer portal. You're, you're driving coaches who were, you know, lifers out of this. And you got to keep up with the times. And that's the hard part here, keeping up with the times and making sure it's like Dabo Sweeney. That scrapbook is really impressive. It's at Clemson. But if I'm a booster or alumni, I'm like, okay, we paid you. Now what do we get out of, out of this program? This ain't about yesterday. It's about today and tomorrow and that's where it's, you know, trying to navigate this embrace. Wants to bring Nick Saban back. He'd be crazy to come back. He's got a good life. He's getting hall of Fame. He's one of the greatest coaches of all time and nothing to prove. You don't have to go back to the NFL and coach the Browns. And he's getting paid. The name that I would keep an eye on is Jon Gruden. John has certainly tried. He's had. People have done some PR for him to try to get his name out there. I do think that he will be coaching next year somewhere. He has talked about the sec. Does he go back into, you know, is he never been a college head coach, but is that what he would want to do? Does he have any other opportunities? I always felt that he had a college personality and that demeanor in relatable, but, man, it's. It's different. Let's pull question for the second hour. Seaton. Which of those jobs would you want, by the way? I would say lsu, because I don't think Les Miles and Ed Orgeron are great coaches, but they won national titles there. There's so much talent there. There is so much talent available. It's still an incredible place to play, that atmosphere. And I would say lsu. What? Why LSU over Florida? I just feel like LSU feels bigger. It's a tick above. Florida has made some bad hires and they haven't had the talent. LSU still has talent, but I would say lsu, they. They feel bigger than Florida does. Yes, Marv, that's crazy because Florida's had some instances where they were Alabama, before Alabama, the Urban Meyer years, they were the most dominant program in college football. But that's a long time ago. That's 15 years ago. That's a long time ago. In today's college football world, what have they done in the last five years? Made bad hires? Yes. Yes, Paulie. But LSU football is the biggest show in that state, including the Saints. No problem. If you're in Florida, you're competing with the rest of the state. Pro college. Three college programs battling there. What do you think the line is tonight with the Commanders and the Chiefs? If you said Commanders getting ten and a half, you would be correct. I'm gonna guess Jaden Daniels is not playing in that game. The over under is 48 and a half, so we have some. Marcus Mariota, come on down. So ten and a half at the Chiefs tonight. Chris in Syracuse leads us off this hour. Best and worst of the weekend. Hi, Chris.
Bill Cowher
Hey, thanks as always, Dan. Hey, I got a couple worse for.
Dan Patrick
You in a comment. Yeah, worse to Bill Belichick coming up a couple inches shy of what would have been a great worst win. And George Pickens, as always, had some really nice catches yesterday, but after every one of them, he had have his little mini celebration. Not a good look when your team is getting orange crushed. And Dan, you were talking about Jonathan.
Bill Cowher
Taylor for mvp, and then Paulie brought up Myles Garrett.
Dan Patrick
You know, Miles Garrett got five sacks yesterday.
Bill Cowher
But it seems like, like with a.
Dan Patrick
Running back, no matter what a defensive lineman does, there's no way he's going to be mvp.
Bill Cowher
And I mean, Paulie's guy, Alan Page, was a long time ago.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, they have the defensive player of the year, therefore, it kind of takes them out of the running for mvp. Now, there have been some defensive, but, you know, Lawrence Taylor, there have been guys who were that great, that dominant, but it feels like those days are over unless you get 25 sacks. Like, you got to give the voters a number where you go. I can't ignore that because Jonathan Taylor, he can get 2,000 yards. We've seen running backs get that and not win the MVP recently if he gets to 30 touchdowns. Now, you got their attention. You got to give them something that they go, I can't ignore that. And right now, Jonathan Taylor has 14 touchdowns. Mike in Wisconsin. Hi, Mike. Thanks for holding. What's on your mind today?
Bill Cowher
Hey, what up, fellas? I got a worse than two best. My worst. Listen, there's a reason the Steelers stopped wearing those uniforms in 1933. Those are horrendous. My best, Luke Fickle and the Badgers dropping 7 on Oregon and only losing by 14. You can put that in the moral victory column. My other best, Jordan love throwing for 360, 20 straight completions. Owning Aaron Rodgers and the Steelers. And how about all those go pack, go chants in Pittsburgh? Let's go.
Dan Patrick
But Aaron Rodgers had to go with a silent count because the packers were making so much noise. That fan base travels. And Pittsburgh, that's a great fan base, too. Yes, Marvin. There's a few teams, there's a few fan bases where no matter where, they never have a true road game. Yeah, The Cowboys, the 49ers, the Steelers, the Packers, maybe somebody else, but they are never really a true road game for them. James in Virginia. Hi, James.
Bill Cowher
Oh, thank you for taking my call, brother. Happy Monday. DP Dan that Salute the commanders, man. Big time, all the time, every time. Super Bowl, super bowl preview tonight. DP Tonight, man. Let's go Washington. It's gonna be a tough ass, man, but I'm calling in about college football, man. I love the interview with Staples, but I gotta disagree with my man. A two loss team is gonna have a tough time this year getting into the College football playoff. And 17 out of the top 25 are either undefeated or one loss. You got teams like UVA, Georgia Tech, my Miami might not even play for the ACC championship if those teams keep winning. I think you got to look at Alabama as definitely a title contender. And I'm really liking what I see in an Ole Miss, man. I think Kiffin should stay put and I'll tell you a name to look out for. Can Chip Kelly find his way back into, hey, coaching. I know he stepped away from UCLA and it's in the NFL, man, but that guy was a great coach at Oregon back in the day. I take it off air, but I can't wait for these last five weeks to college football. Y' all have a great day, man. Salute the commanders.
Dan Patrick
Thank you, James. Good luck tonight. Yeah. I don't see Chip Kelly getting back into being a head coach. Hadn't gone well in Vegas. Offensive coordinator, but I don't, I don't see that happening. I do think that Brian Kelly is going to coach again. The question is, would he take one of these jobs that we would consider secondary jobs that, you know, a Virginia Tech, you know, if Tulane is open, you know, I can't see him doing James Madison maybe, but I think he's going to coach again. He's only 64. I could see him doing that. The. I was watching the North Carolina game against Virginia. I did not like the play. I did not like the play call. And they came up inches short from winning that game, man. They needed that. And that's why when the Hulu documentary went away and I go, no, this is when you want a documentary. This is when it's messy. That's what you want. You want to have a good documentary. Like, I don't want rainbows and unicorns, Valentine's cards. I mean, I, I want a mess. Yes, Marvin, what about Brian Kelly? Once a Bill Belichick steps away from North Carolina? Oh, I don't know. They don't want to do that again. I don't know if they would want to do that. Well, you can keep his accent though, right? He could. You know, from Louisiana to North Carolina. I don't know how much different I'm going to hear from everybody in North Carolina. We got a different accent. Yes. Paulie. I really wanted to see UNC win that and maybe Belichick win a couple in a row to see how that's covered by the national media that has declared him gone. Yeah. Yes. Yes. He's going to get to the middle of Brian Kelly's going to get to the middle of Pennsylvania and say, wait till Yin's. See how good this team looks like. Just trying to search for any, like, regionalism from Pennsylvania. Yin's aren't gonna believe how great this team is gonna be. I haven't even won all of my games. He had that social media post with one of his recruits, the dancing dancing who didn't go to lsu. We had the, the accent at the basketball game. Oh, man, this is a tough start. Yeah. Tough to rebound from some of those things, unfortunately. Yeah. Yep. Yeah. Paul, UCLA is open for him. Hey, bro, it's great to be out.
Bill Cowher
Here to be your coach.
Dan Patrick

The Crying Wolf podcast is the story of two men bound by injustice, of a city haunted by its secrets and the quest for redemption, no matter the price. White victim, female, pretty, wealthy, black defendant. Chicago. A white woman's murder. A black man behind bars for a crime he didn't commit. I had 90 years for killing somebody I have never seen. He says the police are his friends. And then that's it. They turn on him. A corrupt detective. How he was interrogated, the techniques. That's crazy. A snitch and a life stolen. They got the wrong guy. But on the inside, Lee Harris finds an ally in his celly, Robert, who swears to tell the truth about what happened to Lee and free his friend.

Hey, I'm Kalpen, and on my new podcast, Here We Go Again, we'll take today's trends and headlines and ask, why does history keep repeating itself? You may know me as the second hottest actor from the Harold and Kumar movies, but I'm also an author, a White House staffer, and, as of like, 15 seconds ago, a podcast host. Along the way, I've made some friends who are experts in science, politics, and pop culture. And each week, one of them will be joining me to answer my burning questions, like, are we heading towards another financial crash? Like in 08, is non monogamy back in style? And how come there's never a gate ready for your flight when it lands, like, two minutes early? We've got guests like Pete Buttigieg, Stacey Abrams, Lilly Singh, and Bill Nye. When you start weaponizing outer space, things can potentially go really wrong. Look, the world can seem pretty scary right now because it is. But my goal here is for you to listen and feel a little better about the future. Listen and subscribe to Here we go again with Kal Penn on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Baseball coming up tonight, game three in Los Angeles. You also have the commanders in Kansas City. My goal is to not upset Coach Cower. Today. He's nice enough to spend time with us, and it feels like every time I have him on right at the end of the interview, I somehow say something that upsets you. Good morning, coach.
Bill Cowher
Good morning, Dan. I think it's a realistic goal that you have for this morning. Thank you for sharing that with me.
Dan Patrick
Do you get upset when you watch games?
Bill Cowher
I don't get upset. I get disappointed when I see bad calls. I get disappointed when I see irresponsible decisions. But I don't get upset. I get upset. When I was coaching, though, yeah, I did get upset.
Dan Patrick
Did you ever have an official say, my bad. I missed that. I'm sorry?
Bill Cowher
Well, no, they didn't. I mean, I would stand beside him and I would say, I know you can't look up there, but trust me, you will be downgraded if you don't change this call. So I tried to lay out the circumstances and maybe the consequences of them not changing the call, but we have the expedited reviews now. But even to that, to some extent, I mean, I think last night was a prime example and I think it was another great weekend for the officiating.
Dan Patrick
Okay. How upset would you be if you were still coaching the Steelers after that performance by the defense last night?
Bill Cowher
Well, I mean, listen, I think there was some pivotal moments in there. I think it was a very good first half. I mean, you go into a game, you go into halftime, you're up 16 to 7, you get the ball coming out the second half, you got a quarterback who's very good with cadence, get them to jump offside, takes a shot down the field and it's not even called. I thought that was a very pivotal point in the game because you always talk about the last two minutes and the first, last four, first four coming out. And that was a chance. You know, if it's third down and three, there's a different play call third down and three and you have midfield, maybe even go put on fourth down and then you turn around and you. The very next the series, you get pressure on Jordan Love. He throws a ball that's up for grabs, I mean, and it turns into a 80 yard or 70 yard reception that leads to a touchdown. So I think it's kind of spiraled out of hand at that point. But that was a very pivotal time in the game. So I don't think you got to be careful by looking and describing the whole game saying the defense was this, defense was that. There was a few plays there because I saw first half where they got after him pretty good and that, I mean, Green Bay held him to seven points and that. So I don't think. I think I'd be very careful at this point of trying to overanalyze something.
Dan Patrick
If you're the Browns, why would you hold on to Miles Garrett and maybe not trade him and realize, let's get some first round picks and you know, we got to figure this out, we got to restart.
Bill Cowher
He's a generational player, Dan. You know, I don't think he's trade generational players. And you know that that's a total, total start over. We've seen a lot of teams rebound and come back. This is a good defense. This is an offense that's still trying to find its way with a young quarterback. And you know, again, I think you look at a national football League, they're still at a point with what they're. They're still only three games out of first place. So. So I think again, the whole getting rid of people and are trying to buy people, and I think if you're close, you go get someone. But I think if you're going to take a player off your team, it's not a great message to send to the rest of the players on your team. Are you giving up on this season and now expect them to go out there the second half of this season to build something, maybe take into the next year? Because I think there's a lot to be said for that. So I don't think you get rid of generational players.
Dan Patrick
What do you do if you're the Cowboys where, you know, you have a really good offense, but you're missing that pass rusher that you traded to Green Bay.
Bill Cowher
Right. And you have some. Some draft equity there moving forward. But to take advantage of this time right now, I think at least making some attempt to upgrade that defense, because you're right, they have a too much. Too much of a special offense. You don't know what's going to happen with George Pickens at the end of the year where he's at. You know, he's going to be up for a contract. So I think you try to go to see what you see, what's out there. You do have some draft equity to work with, maybe acquire somebody, but there's a lot of issues they have on the defensive side of the ball. Obviously, getting a pass rusher, it starts right there. They've had some injuries in the secondary, but I think you're still in the hunt right now. When you look at the Dallas Cowboys, you're still right there. I would absolutely try to upgrade that defense.
Dan Patrick
What did you make of the Cowboys or the Steelers uniforms last night?
Bill Cowher
I don't like them at all. I think it's. I mean, throwback. I don't know. I.
Dan Patrick
Would you have objected to that? Would you have made an exact. Did you have veto power on anything?
Bill Cowher
Like, are you sure? Are you trying to get me upset? I see where you're going. I see where you're going with this. You are. We had. We were talking good football. You went right into the uniform.
Dan Patrick
I know I did.
Bill Cowher
You said you're going to try. You said you were going to try.
Dan Patrick
I did try. I failed, coach. I failed.
Bill Cowher
Okay.
Dan Patrick
Can you veto those uniforms if you were the head coach?
Bill Cowher
I don't know if I could, but I would make every attempt to do so. I would not try to upset anybody, but I would let them know that is not my favorite uniform, particularly on that particular night going to the Green Bay Packers. And I know maybe that decision was made beforehand. Maybe or maybe not. But boy, we could change it if we had to, really, can't we? I mean, I don't know.
Dan Patrick
It looked like they had khaki pants on. Coach.
Bill Cowher
Yeah, I don't know. Yeah, the talk wasn't much better. It was not much better.
Dan Patrick
That was, that was rough. We're talking to the hall of Fame coach Bill Cower once again. I'm trying not to upset him. Why can't a running back win mvp?
Bill Cowher
Well, as. Glad you brought that up and I agree with you. I mean if you go back historically, the last three running backs to win national MVPs have been Marshall Falk, Ladanian, Tomlinson and Sean Alexander. And all three of them, after eight games had a total of 14 touchdowns, which is the same pace Jonathan Taylor is on. And Jonathan Taylor, to me, with a football team that I think is the best in football right now, you look what they can do on offense with him. Daniel Jones is playing at a very high level. Their defense, you can talk of being their third in takeaways, our top five in defensive scoring. Lou Anarumo, I think has been one of the best off season acquisitions, I think in the national football. But I would put him on the defensive side. I put Josh McDaniel on the offensive side with what he's done with Drake May and Mike Brable. So I don't think there's, I think there's a legitimate argument. We keep talking about the quarterbacks and I know that the quarterbacks are this. But that football team, the heartbeat and the soul of that team is Jonathan Taylor. That being the Indianapolis Colts who have the best record in football.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, that's what I said. You got 14 touchdowns. He's on pace for, you know, 1800 yards. Yeah, but he would have to do even have to surpass Sean Alexander touchdown total before I think the voters would notice because 2,000 yards, we've seen that and they give you that, that cop out award, the offensive player of the year.
Bill Cowher
I don't disagree with you. But that football team, to me again not take nothing away from Daniel Jones and he's been great. But you take Jonathan Taylor off that team, it's not the same offense. And I don't know if you could say that about other quarterbacks because to me it's been about the quarterbacks. I think the running back has, you know, supplemented that and it's been a complementary part of that to the quarterbacks was Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, because they also bring an element of rush into that. But you look at this football team, to me, Daniel Jones. Compliments. Jonathan Taylor.
Dan Patrick
Yeah.
Bill Cowher
Not the other way around.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, I agree. What was the highlight of your NFL career?
Bill Cowher
Winning a Super Bowl. In my 14th year.
Dan Patrick
No, as a player.
Bill Cowher
I didn't have many of them. Okay. So I, I, so I blocked a punt against the New York Giants in 1983. You're trying to get me up.
Dan Patrick
Why am I? I'm asking you to open up your, your scrapbook.
Bill Cowher
Okay? I am, I am, I am. Your career. I'm like winning the Super Bowl. No, your playing career. Okay. I was a special teams player and I did play for five years. I did block a punt against Ali Haji Sheikh in the New York Giants at the same time. I think Bill Belichick was on that staff. So, So I did block a punt for a touchdown. It was in week three. It was. I was at a field Health Eagles. They were playing the New York Giants in Giants Stadium. So I, I guess that would be my career highlight, a block punt. I actually looked this up. I was trying to see if I could find it and I actually found it. You have to dig deep into the archives of the Internet to find us. But I did block an Ali Haji Sheikh who was in because of a hurt Dave Jennings. And I came in there and actually, you know, called me.
Dan Patrick
That was, that was his first, first, that was his first ever punt.
Bill Cowher
Minor detail.
Dan Patrick
All right. I'm just, I'm a journalist here.
Bill Cowher
Okay, but you know who made the call on that? John Madden. I had John Madden do me one of those telestrators. He did a teles. So, so that I guess would be my highlight is having John Madden do a telestrator on you. So now you're trying to get me upset because you had to say, I.
Dan Patrick
Know your highlight was winning a Super Bowl.
Bill Cowher
Okay? I know that. Okay. And I gave you my, my player highlight.
Dan Patrick
But why, why are you angry?
Bill Cowher
Because I'm actually excited to talk about this because I did have John Madden do a telestrated on me blocking a pipe. That. Which was pretty cool, right? Have you ever had John Madden telestrated you when you, when you were doing an interview?
Dan Patrick
No. No. Okay, but see, America just learned that you blocked a punt. National TV and John Madden towers traded it. They never would have Known that. But that's me doing investigative work and asking the right questions.
Bill Cowher
And the question was, oh, was that his first punt?
Dan Patrick
No, it was his first punt.
Bill Cowher
Oh, so you did know that.
Dan Patrick
Yes, it was his first. Ali Haji Sheikh was a kicker and he had to come in for Dave Jennings, who was the former player rep of the Giants. I might have been. Was that game.
Bill Cowher
That's a great shirt.
Dan Patrick
What's that game at the Meadowlands? Yes, I might have been there.
Bill Cowher
Wow. You don't remember my greatest play of my career. You do remember the play. I think you remember the play.
Dan Patrick
I might. I might, yeah. Wait, so.
Bill Cowher
So did you really look your stuff or is this was something that just. You knew that, that, that Ali Haji Sheikh only had one punt and it was blocked. But you did not know it was me?
Dan Patrick
I did not know it was you.
Bill Cowher
Good. We've. This is fact 5 trying to get.
Dan Patrick
Ali Haji Chic on the show today to surprise you.
Bill Cowher
Wow. Thank you. You're making me happy now. This is pretty cool. You're like going down memory lane with some of my highlights.
Dan Patrick
Because your wife is not asking you this stuff. She doesn't care.
Bill Cowher
No, I tell her every now reminder. I did. I did play.
Dan Patrick
Do you remind her? Yeah. Do you remind her?
Bill Cowher
Well, just every now, like I know a little bit of what I'm talking about. It doesn't. I know after the fact you always have all the right answers. But now I didn't always have the right answers. I made some bad calls at times.
Dan Patrick
Too, but I would, I would hate to have to interview you. Like a halftime interview.
Bill Cowher
That would be good, right?
Dan Patrick
Like when you're losing and then, you know, I say, hey, what kind of adjustments are you going to make in the second half, Coach?
Bill Cowher
Multiple.
Dan Patrick
Even if you're winning. I don't want to interview you, you.
Bill Cowher
Know, even for winning, like, so what do you. How you feel about the first half? It doesn't matter because it's the only man thing that matters is the second half. Next question.
Dan Patrick
Once again, I don't think there's a good question that I could ask you where I was going to go. Oh, okay. We got something out of coach.
Bill Cowher
You maybe could ask me what's, what's the greatest joy of your playing career?
Dan Patrick
What's the highlight?
Bill Cowher
I blocked the shots about the puppet. Ali, how's your seat?
Dan Patrick
Good to talk to you.
Bill Cowher
Yes.
Dan Patrick
I don't know. I don't know how you, you know, you're gonna find something, you know, later later today that is going to equal.
Bill Cowher
You know, I look forward to coming on here with you because I just, you know, I never know what path you're going down. And so every now and then it's something that's like in the. And you do touch base with the now, but you also like to go back into the archives a little bit and just dig into someone's history, dig into someone's emotions, dig into someone's troublesome past at times. And so I appreciate you allowing me to go down memory lane to experience all those things. And I look forward to coming on again. And thank you for still having my bobblehead up there.
Dan Patrick
No, I won't. But you wore 53 when you're with the Browns, but 57 with the Chiefs.
Bill Cowher
Yeah, I was 55 in high school, 54 with NC State, 53 with the Chiefs. I asked for 52, but they wouldn't give it to me. So I went the other way and went up to 57.
Dan Patrick
Do you have that jersey?
Bill Cowher
No. Didn't have it for very long.
Dan Patrick
For two years.
Bill Cowher
My career, I never stayed one place.
Dan Patrick
But you did win a Super bowl in Pittsburgh and you did block a punt.
Bill Cowher
Ah, thank you for leaving me with. Those are special memories. I appreciate that. Thank you.
Dan Patrick
Special teams legend slash hall of Fame coach Bill Keller. Thank you, coach.
Bill Cowher
Thanks.
Dan Patrick
And there he is, NFL Today on cbs. See, my goal was not to upset him and I thought, okay, we got him, you know, with his highlight and then he took offense to it was Ali Haji Chic's first ever punt as a place kicker. Oh, these diva head coaches, you know, what are you gonna do? All right, we'll take a break. When we come back, Mario just showed coach cower when I said the diva. No, the next time you're on, I'll bring up the diva stuff. Thank you, coach. All right, we'll take a break. We'll give you our best and worst of the weekend after this. But one will end up dead, the other tried for murder not once. People went wild, not twice, stunned, but three times. John John and Ann Bender are rich and attractive and they're devoted to each other. They create a nature reserve and build a spectacular circular home high on the top of a hill. But little by little, their dream starts to crumble and our couple retreat from reality. They lose it.
Bill Cowher
They actually lose it.
Dan Patrick
They sort of went nuts. Until one night, everything spins out of control. Listen to Hell in Heaven on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hey there. I'm Kyle McLaughlin. You might know me as that guy from Twin Peaks, Sex and the City, or just the Internet's dad. I have a new podcast called what Are We Even Doing? Where I embark on a noble quest to understand the the brilliant chaos of youth culture. Daddy's Looking Good. Each week I invite someone fascinating to join me. Actors, musicians, creatives, highly evolved digital life forms. And we talk about what they love. Sometimes I'll driz a little honey in there too if I'm feeling sexy in the morning. What keeps them going? And you're maybe my biggest competition on social media. Like when a kid says bra to me and how they're navigating this high speed roller coaster we call reality. In Australia, you're looking out for snakes, spiders and boys, right? Hey, he's no Trey McDougal. Chill. This is like the comments section of my Instagram. Join me and my delightful guests every Thursday and let's get weird together in a good way. Listen to what are we even doing on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Here we go. Hey, I'm Cal Penn and on my new podcast, Here We Go Again, we'll take today's trends and headlines. Why does history keep repeating itself? You may know me as the second hottest actor from the Harold and Kumar movies. But I'm also an author, a White House staffer, and as of like 15 seconds ago, a podcast host. Along the way, I've made some friends who are experts in science, politics and pop culture. And each week one of them will be joining me to answer my burning questions, like, are we heading towards another financial crash? Like in 08, is non monogamy back in style? And how come there's never a gate ready for your flight when it lands like two minutes early? We've got guests like Pete Buttigieg, Stacey Abrams, Lilly Singh, and Bill Nye. When you start weaponizing outer space, things can potentially go really wrong. Look, the world can seem pretty scary right now, because it is. But my goal here is for you to listen and feel a little better about the future. Listen and subscribe to Here We Go Again with Kal Penn on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. The Crying Wolf podcast is the story of two men bound by injustice, of a city haunted by its secrets and the quest for redemption, no matter the price. Bill Cowher
I have never seen, he says.
Dan Patrick
The police are his friends and then that's it. They turn on him. A corrupt detective, how he was interrogated, the techniques. That's crazy. A snitch and a life stolen. They got the wrong guy. But on the inside, Lee Harris finds in his celly Robert, who swears to tell the truth about what happened to Lee and free his friend.
Bill Cowher
And if you're with me, your goal is I'll take care of you.

I'm gonna be with you.
Bill Cowher
You stuck with me for life.
Dan Patrick
Listen to the Crying Wolf podcast starting on October 22nd on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Best and worst of the weekend Todd, start with you.
Bill Cowher
We've had discussion about both of these, but I feel strongly about them, so I'm gonna go with them anyway.
Dan Patrick
Best Saturday night in Toronto. Dodgers pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto became the first pitcher since Shilling 24 years ago.
Bill Cowher
Throws back to back complete games with postseason.
Dan Patrick
Here's a little more on that. The last pitcher to retire the last.
Bill Cowher
20 batters in the playoffs was Don.
Dan Patrick
Larson during his perfect game for the 56 World Series. And since Yamamoto's performance over the weekend, the last to record back to back postseason complete games. While Allowing no more than a run in each of them. Sherry Smith, you Remember Sherry Smith, 1920.
Bill Cowher
Sandy Koufax, 65 and Oral Hersheyser, 88.
Dan Patrick
Worst of the weekend, LSU football.
Bill Cowher
They were chanting fire Kelly from The get go. First quarter when it was just a.
Dan Patrick
147 game that got increasingly louder, became 4918 at one point. And yes, Coach Kelly was sent packing Seaton. Best and worst. My best of the weekend. JM3. Checking into the game. Joe Milton the third. Let's go, kid. Went three for four. I don't know, 58 yards, a touchdown. That's the future right there, Cowboys fans. That is the future. Righty. My worst of the weekend is seeing Miles Garrett's brilliance on display for absolutely no reason. That's just sad. It's just a footnote. It is. It's just like, oh, and oh, by the way, Miles Garrett had five seconds. What's the trade deadline? Next Tuesday, Eight days away or whatever. Somebody just do this lad a favor. Yeah, I agree with Bill Cower. Find the Browns. I can't trade him. I can't. I can't. Does it make sense? Yes, but I mean, at least the Browns have tried. They. They fail. But they do try. I mean, they gave that God awful contract to Deshaun Watson. They kept Miles Garrett. You know, maybe with these draft picks that something good out, you know, can come out of this. But they got to find a quarterback. The game is all about finding your quarterback. The Colts have been looking for a quarterback for the last five years. They were going through Philip Rivers and Matt Ryan, Joe Flack, I mean, all of these guys. Now you might have your quarterback, you might have him. Seattle might have their quarterback. Indy has their quarterback. Tampa Bay has their court like Denver has their quarterback. But if you're a head coach and you go, I don't have to worry about that position. Wow, that's what this is all about. Like the Titans, do they know what they have? No. Has anybody talked about maybe you sit Cam Ward down, You know, Bryce Young. Do they know what they have in Bryce Young? That's the tricky part, trying to figure this out. Do we have the guy? Yes, we do. Now we can move on to the other positions. Martin Beston, worst of the weekend. The Browns did have their quarterback.
Bill Cowher
Now as an MVP candidate for another team.
Dan Patrick
But anyway, best of the weekend, James Cook, Buffalo Bills running back, 19 carries, 216 yards and two touchdowns. My goodness. Worst of the weekend. It's tough because we like this guy. Bijan Robinson. Nine carries for 25 yards and this is two weeks after Raheem Moore said he was the best player in the NFL. Yep. Yep, you're right. Yeah, Paulie. I got two best A&M quarterback, Marcel Reed, two touchdowns passing, two touchdowns running, going to sneak in the Heisman conversation with the win against lsu. And again back on the list again. Haynes King of Georgia Tech 8, no Georgia Tech. Through for three, ran for two. My worst of the weekend. Dan, if you're watching the Giants Eagles game, Eagles do a tush push and the guys are pushing Hertz and he's struggling for the first down. And a defender knocks the ball out. Clearly as the play is still going on. They said a whistle had blown and forward progress was stopped. He was, he was reaching. He was being pushed. And the defense has only a few moves to stop it. One of them is knocking the ball out. They did and they got taken away by the refs. The tush push will not be in the, in the NFL next year. And it has nothing to do with injuries. It has to do with, with trying to officiate this. They, it feels like on a weekly basis they screw this up and it's, it's tough to officiate. And that's why I think they'll get rid of it now. Now they can do that and have a legitimate reason why, as opposed to saying aesthetically it's not pleasing. But I think they're going to get rid of the tush push. Austin Reeves had 51 points last night, by the way, the Lakers. Austin Reeves with no Luca, no LeBron put up 50. I think he had close to a triple double. I, I think he missed it by one rebound or one assist. Oh, my goodness. Shay Gil just had 30. The fourth player in NBA history to have at least 120 points in the first three games of a season. So Jerry West, Michael Jordan and Wilt Chamberlain. Victor Wembanyama. The spurs are three. And oh, by the way, he has 100 points, 40 rebounds, and 18 blocks so far. He's the first player with at least 100 points and 10 blocks in his team's first three games since Dan Patrick. Shut the hell up, Shaq in 1993. Stat of the day. Stat of the day. Stat of the day. Stat of the day. Here comes that. What? Stat of the day. I don't know how good the spurs are, Dylan Harper coming off the bench, but they are interesting. And, and victory. Victor Wimbayama is must see tv. Yes, Marv. If the spurs, by hook or by crook, get to 50 games, he's the MVP, no questions asked. 50. 50 wins. 50 wins. Okay, Gus in LA. Hi, Gus. What's on your mind? Best and worst of the weekend. Good morning, Mr. Patrick. Hope you and the boys had a great weekend. All right, look, my worst of the.
Bill Cowher
Weekend was gonna be Game 1 Toronto.
Dan Patrick
But then last night I was, you know, I was busy doing a lot of things there.
Bill Cowher
And then I get a text message.
Dan Patrick
From Buddha saying, what the hell is your team wearing? And I'm like, what? What's he talking about? Because I hadn't watched the game yet.
Bill Cowher
And I turn it on and I'm.
Dan Patrick
Like, dear God, what the hell is that?
Bill Cowher
And that's when I should have known.
Dan Patrick
That this was not going to go well for me. And, you know, but for three quarters it did. And then the fourth quarter it's like, hey, yeah, you're still playing a ball game. Best of the weekend. Yoshinovu Yamamoto. Look, I'm biased in my thing, man, but that got to be one of the best pitching performances on the road.
Bill Cowher
Hostile environment, the way that Toronto fans are that stadium.
Dan Patrick
And he shut them all down in order, 20 in a row. I will be watching the next three days saying pretty much a Hail Mary every minute because, dear God, this lineup scares the hell out of me. And I'm hoping to God that we.
Bill Cowher
Can just get this done here at home.
Dan Patrick
All right, Gus, thank you. Yamamoto reminds me of Pedro Martinez. Very slight build, but he's got movement and back to back complete games. You know, there's going to be a time like 15 years from now when you're going to have kids asking their grandfather. So. So what? What was a complete game? Well, that's where a pitcher would start and then he would complete the game all by himself. Yeah, yeah. They'd go nine innings. Wow, that's really crazy. Grandpa Mitchell in Charlotte. Hi, Mitchell. I got 5, 9, 1 90.
Bill Cowher
I've got two best and one worst.
Dan Patrick
First best today is my three year sober. Second best at your recommendation.
Bill Cowher
Went up to Annapolis this weekend. We've got some friends up there and.
Dan Patrick
We were able to go to the Navy homecoming game and we were able to walk around the campus beforehand.
Bill Cowher
It was just an incredible experience.
Dan Patrick
And my worst of the weekend was my Atlanta Falcons.
Bill Cowher
What are we doing? Nine carries for Bijan and three targets.
Dan Patrick
And I thought that you would get better quarterback play than you did. Kirk. Did not play well. They did not play well. They've been a big disappointment. All right, that's two hours in the books. We got one more to go. More of your Phone calls, Best and worst of the weekend update. The poll results as well. The starting lineup. Fritzy, Seaton, Marv, Paula, yours truly. Final hour on this Monday. Best and worst coming up right after this. Hello, America's sweetheart. Johnny Knoxville here. I want to tell you about my new true crime podcast, Crimeless Hillbilly Heist from Smartless Media, Campside media and big money players. It's a wild tale about a gang of high functioning nitwits who somehow pulled off America's third largest cash heist. Kind of like Robin Hood, except for.
Bill Cowher
The part where he steals from the.
Dan Patrick
Rich and gives to the poor. I'm not that generous. It's a damn near inspiring true story for anyone out there who's ever shot for the moon, then just totally muffed up the landing. They stole $17 million and had not bought a ticket to help him escape. So we're saying like, oh God, what are doing we? What do we do? That was dumb. People do not follow my example. In this engaging hour, Dan Patrick and his crew dive into the biggest storylines in the NFL and college football, with a special focus on Lamar Jackson’s controversial absence, the MVP race, and the rapidly shifting landscape of college coaching. The highlight of the hour is a lively, candid interview with Hall of Fame coach Bill Cowher. The discussion covers league officiating, the trade deadline, MVP criteria, the dubious Steelers throwback uniforms, and more, blending insight, banter, and nostalgia.
[04:10–10:15]
Dan details the confusion around the Ravens’ late change to Lamar Jackson’s injury status against the Bears, which dramatically shifted Las Vegas betting lines.
Patrick and Paulie break down the issues with NFL disclosure protocols, noting how the sudden Saturday injury update affected both teams, bettors, and league credibility.
Quote:
“This comes down to information. This is about gambling—making sure that everybody knows who’s playing... If Lamar’s playing and you’re home in a must-win, that’s why I said, ‘Man, they’re favored by six and a half.’”
—Dan Patrick, [08:45]
Speculation about potential NFL penalties (loss of draft picks, fines) if the Ravens are found to have misled the league and public.
[03:45–07:21, 14:20–15:25, 32:28–34:31]
Mahomes is the “default” MVP betting favorite, but some feel this season hasn’t been special for him statistically.
Discussion about why running backs and defensive players rarely win MVP, despite huge statistical seasons.
Jonathan Taylor’s 14 touchdowns are noted; Dan and Bill Cowher both argue he would need a spectacular total (30+) to really get voter attention.
Quote:
“With a running back, no matter what a defensive lineman does, there’s no way he’s going to be MVP.”
—Bill Cowher (paraphrased), [14:23]
“You got to give the voters a number where they go, ‘I can’t ignore that.’”
—Dan Patrick, [14:29]
Cowher argues the “heartbeat” of the Colts is Jonathan Taylor, not Daniel Jones, and questions the prevailing MVP criteria:
“That football team, to me—Daniel Jones compliments Jonathan Taylor. Not the other way around.”
—Bill Cowher, [34:30]
[06:11–07:47, 30:24–31:08]
The crew speculates about possible blockbuster trades, especially for Dallas (missing an elite pass rusher), mentioning names like Max Crosby and Myles Garrett.
Cowher weighs in on why trading “generational players” like Myles Garrett would be a mistake, noting the negative message it would send to the team.
Quote:
“He’s a generational player, Dan. You don’t trade generational players... Are you giving up on this season?”
—Bill Cowher, [29:19]
[10:30–13:40]
The panel discusses top college football job openings and the wisdom (or folly) of massive contract buyouts.
Dan speculates on potential returns for Nick Saban or Jon Gruden; ponders whether Lincoln Riley’s long contract is holding back USC from making changes.
On coaching job appeal: LSU stands out due to talent, atmosphere, and the fact that even unconventional hires have found championship success.
“LSU football is the biggest show in that state—including the Saints.” —Paulie, [12:35]
[13:56–15:50, 16:23–17:26, 54:39–55:47]
Listeners contribute bests and worsts of the weekend, ranging from team performances (George Pickens’ celebrations, Jonathan Taylor for MVP) to moral victories and travel-ready fanbases.
Quote:
“There’s a few fanbases where no matter where, they never have a true road game—Cowboys, 49ers, Steelers, Packers...”
—Marvin, [15:52]
[26:35–40:41]
Breaks down “pivotal” moments in the Steelers’ latest loss; advises caution in overanalyzing from a few bad series.
Strongly dislikes the Steelers’ throwback uniforms, humorously expressing that he’d have done everything possible to veto them.
Quote:
“I don’t like them at all. I mean—throwback? I don’t know. I’d make every attempt [to veto], not try to upset anybody, but let them know—‘not my favorite uniform!’”
—Bill Cowher, [31:13, 31:48]
Dan prompts Cowher’s best “player” moment—a blocked punt on Giants kicker Ali Haji-Sheikh, which led to a fun fact: it was Haji-Sheikh’s first-ever punt!
Cowher relishes that John Madden telestrated his play.
Quote:
“I did block a punt against Ali Haji Sheikh in the New York Giants... Having John Madden do a telestrator on you was pretty cool, right?”
—Bill Cowher, [34:42–36:08]
Lively banter on why certain interview questions are so “impossible” for a coach in the heat of battle:
Dan and Cowher close with a laugh on jersey numbers and the transient life of special teams players.
Cowher: “I appreciate you allowing me to go down memory lane… these are special memories.” [40:31]
On Coaching Patience:
“I get the feeling USC might have moved on from Lincoln Riley had he not had this long contract. But it feels like the boosters, everybody is lacking patience.”
—Dan Patrick, [10:30]
On Throwback Uniforms:
“It looked like they had khaki pants on, Coach.” – Dan Patrick, [32:09]
“The top wasn’t much better, it was not much better.” – Bill Cowher, [32:13]
On Inside Football Knowledge:
“Your wife is not asking you this stuff. She doesn’t care.”
—Dan Patrick, [37:51]
“No, I tell her every now and then—reminder, I did play.”
—Bill Cowher, [37:56]
The episode is sharply analytical but also light-hearted, brimming with sports-nerd detail, inside jokes, and playful ribbing—especially during the Cowher interview. Both Dan Patrick and Bill Cowher use humor to shade their frank opinions, making for a blend of technical sports talk and easy banter.
This hour captures why fans love sports radio: informed takes, open debates, and genuine personalities reflecting on both games and their own storied histories.
