You are listening to the Dan Patrick show on FOX Sports Radio Hour 2 on this Tuesday. Gang's all the ambassador of humor wearing his festive Broncos sweater.
Mike Golick
We did it.
Todd
We did it last week. We did hung in there.
Dan Patrick
We did sixes.
Todd
Let's go.
Dan Patrick
Yeah. No longer they it's we. Seaton's here, Marvin's here. Paulie, yours truly. Stat of the Day brought to you by Panini America. The official trading cards of the Dan Patrick Show. Jameis Winston giveth. Jameis Winston taketh away. Entertaining game last night. You can't say Jameis is boring when he's playing. You can. Like I would tune in just to watch him play because I know something's going to Happen. And a lot happened last night and most of it was pretty good. Okay, here's one for you. Did Jameis Winston have a good game last night? Todd?
Todd
Yes, he did.
Dan Patrick
Seaton?
Marvin
No.
Dan Patrick
Marvin? No. Paulie?
Paulie
Yes.
Dan Patrick
I'm going to say yes. Even though you throw a couple of pick sixes, you throw three interceptions, he throws four touchdowns, he throws for almost 500 yards. But he gives you a chance. And if you're. He gives them a chance.
Marvin
Right. He gives you a chance while also losing the game for them.
Dan Patrick
Okay, true. But would you rather have that or a neutered. Oh, wrong word. Neutered.
Paulie
DeSean Watson, possible punishment?
Marvin
Yes, that's an interesting question because lots of people would have neither on their team.
Dan Patrick
Oh, yeah, I don't want desean Watson. But if you said my consolation prize is Jameis Winston instead of DeSean Watson. Okay, I'm good.
Marvin
Fire the general manager.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, I'm fine with that. Those are your two options.
Marvin
I'm firing whoever hired.
Dan Patrick
Yes. Todd.
Todd
They were on their own 40 with two minutes left down two. So they're about what, 25, 30 yards away from a reasonable attempt at a game winning field goal. It's unfortunate the way it played out, but we would say we'd have a lot different attitude whoever thinks that he didn't have a good game. If they pull that out, 35, 34, we wink at the three interceptions, the two pick sixes, and we say 500 yards, four touchdowns, and they beat Denver, a team that needed that to stay in that seven seed playoff spot. It becomes a whole other story, which it always is. Hindsight's 20 20.
Dan Patrick
He'S thrown for over 1500 yards in his first five starts since 1970. Here's some of the players who have thrown for 1500 yards or more in their first five starts. Drew Bledsoe with the Bills, that was when he went from New England there. Kurt Cousins, when he got to Minnesota, did it. Jameis Winston is. He's third on the list. This is since 1970. Joe Flacco's on there with the Browns last year. Cam Newton with the Panthers, that was his rookie season. Matthew Stafford when he went to the Rams, Justin Herbert his rookie season, and Steve deberg with the Dolphins. That's it. So he's third on the list of most passing yards with his first five starts. Brought to you by Panini America, the official trading cards of the program. Good morning. If you're watching on Peacock, thank you for downloading the app and our radio affiliates around the country. IHeartRadio Fox Sports Radio. Once again, Jameis Winston giveth and taketh away on the field and also had an unbelievable answer post game. Talking about he had a special request. In times like this, you know, that's It's. It's an opportunity to continue to glorify.
Marvin
The Lord even through the toughest circumstances.
Dan Patrick
I know I'm better than this. I know I'm like, I'm just praying for the Lord to deliver me from pick sixes. Like, that's just. That's not me. Like, phenomenal game. Offense do some great things, but I mess it up. Deliver me from pick sixes. That is right out of key and peel. Right out of key and peel. All righty. Poll question for hour two. Let's recap hour one. Seaton. But what do you have for hour two?
Marvin
Hour one, we got up there. Who is the most entertaining player in the NFL right now. Josh Allen is barely edging out Jameis Winston. Recency bias. I think Lamar Jackson also up there as well.
Dan Patrick
Mm.
Marvin
We're putting up there right now. We have two more of an issue. Late hits on sliding quarterbacks or fake slides. Slash out of bounds.
Dan Patrick
Ooh. Ooh. Okay.
Marvin
Which is more of an issue. We also have team that needs to return to old school uniforms, L.A. rams or Denver Broncos. And then we also have yet another one that's going up that says, did Jameis Winston have a good game last night? Yes or no? Yeah, it's a busy hour, too.
Dan Patrick
Okay. I'm fine with the Rams uniforms. I don't like those dirty white ones. Like, you can't be in LA with the Dodger white uniform. And then when they had those kind of grayish, like, I had clothes in college that look like that. Hey, did you wash these? Those weren't good. But the Rams got great colors. Broncos just. The helmet was. Didn't look like it's one of those where they go, hey, are we going to have those helmets finished? Yeah, I think so. And then all of a sudden, they come out on the field and you're like, give me some color here. They were bland. Yes. Mark, should the Broncos go back to Elway losing Super Bowls or Super bowl winning orange?
Todd
Todd, Strangely enough, I like the losing ones. I like the D with the horse and the smoke coming out that. The royal blue with the orange. That's the Orange Crush from the 70s. That's the uniform that you go with?
Dan Patrick
Yeah, of course you like the D. I like that.
Todd
I just think that's the best ones.
Dan Patrick
That 77, 78 Carl Mecklenburg.
Paulie
Yeah.
Todd
The snow Goose.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, right over. Went right over somebody there. All right, so that was Monday night football. Christian McCaffrey. I think they made it official. He's going to be on the ir, which means he's done for the season. And how about the team that has a winning record, that has the least chance or smallest chance of making the Super Bowl? You put the Broncos up there at the top of the list. Anybody else you would factor in with winning record? You can't say no chance, but very, very small chance of maybe threatening for a Super Bowl.
Paulie
Here's four teams, teams with winning records. You can't picture being in the Super Bowl. The LA Chargers, the Denver Broncos, the Washington Commanders or the Minnesota Vikings.
Dan Patrick
I'd say the Broncos. I'd say the Broncos. Yeah.
Todd
Todd, I can't picture the 7 and 5 Seahawks from getting anywhere near the Super Bowl.
Dan Patrick
Oh, yeah. We didn't even bring those in. Yes, Marvin. Todd took the words out of my mouth. Oh, he did? Yep. Okay. All right. My first place, Seattle Seahawks there, man. So you think that the Seahawks have less of a chance to get to the super bowl than the Broncos do?
Todd
I'm going to say that chance than the Seahawks of getting to the Super Bowl. How about that?
Dan Patrick
Okay.
Todd
Even though the AFC is much more stacked, so it doesn't make sense that everybody.
Dan Patrick
Yeah. But the two best teams in football are in the nfc. There you go.
Todd
Thank you for helping my argument. I appreciate that.
Dan Patrick
Thank you.
Todd
Todd, you're not getting past the Lions and Eagles. Come on, now.
Dan Patrick
No, you're not.
Todd
I don't think they're going to pass the Commanders either.
Dan Patrick
I'll say that Mike Golick is going to join us. Big Mike is going to join us. Coming up. Is there something that the NFL does when it comes to quarterbacks sliding? Trevor Lawrence got knocked out and, of course, the ensuing situation that resulted in the player being suspended for three games because he had a couple of priors. Yeah. Seaton.
Marvin
I was going to say the Texans, I don't believe, have any chance.
Todd
That's a good one.
Dan Patrick
Okay.
Marvin
Super Bowl.
Dan Patrick
All right.
Paulie
People love the Texans.
Dan Patrick
Three months ago they did.
Marvin
Yeah. That 8 and 5, though, doesn't quite feel the same.
Dan Patrick
Yeah. But, yeah, the NFL came out with. What's the player's name? Paulie. Who got suspended?
Paulie
Aziz Al Sahir.
Dan Patrick
Okay. Should be more of a household name considering everything that's happened here in the last 48 hours. But he's been suspended for three games because of the hit and he had two priors. He led with his forearm to Trevor Lawrence's head. And also he took off his helmet. He got involved in a fight. He wouldn't leave the field. And then D'Amico Ryan's somehow places the blame on Jacksonville and Trevor Lawrence. And that, to me, was embarrassing because now he can say Trevor Lawrence created this because he was sliding late. Okay. But when you say Jacksonville, they. They were the aggressors and they were out there and they escalated this. I. And I don't know if there's a Texans media person who said to D'Amico Ryan's, when he said this yesterday, hey, how would you have felt, coach, if C.J. stroud got knocked out and your players didn't respond that way? So you can put a little blame on the actual play itself, the process, giving yourself up. But you can't blame Jacksonville going out there to defend their quarterback. That's embarrassing on Demiko Ryan's part. And he should really say, you know what? On second thought, if my players didn't react that way to my quarterback, I would have been livid. Yes. Pauline.
Paulie
What I really don't understand about players like this, the repeat offender. Guys, remember Burfict back in the day?
Dan Patrick
Yeah.
Paulie
They're giving up game checks. This guy Elsa here, he's. He's in year six of a decent career. He's a starter here and there. He's not playing here and there.
Marvin
Hey, we should just keep talking.
Dan Patrick
Are we okay?
Marvin
Yeah. And so keep talking.
Paulie
A guy like him, he's going to lose three game checks. That's like 10% of his career salary. He's going to lose in next month.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, yeah, but they don't think that way.
Paulie
I know, but like you don't have after the first two. You know, he lost $11,000 earlier this season and. 11,000. An agent doesn't say, in the NFL you're not going to get a new contract based off late hits and stuff like this. This isn't Ronnie Lott days or, you know, where.
Dan Patrick
He probably got to the NFL by playing this way and being aggressive. I don't. You can't. I can't expect, you know, Vontez Burfik. How much money did he lose?
Paulie
Oh, hundreds of thousands.
Dan Patrick
He couldn't change. At no point did he say, you know what, I'm somehow going to play differently. He wasn't going to be able to play differently.
Paulie
And you said it a hundred times. They're going to side with protecting the quarterbacks at all costs.
Dan Patrick
Yes.
Paulie
Some borderline linebacker from the Texans is not going to win A duel with.
Marvin
Trevor Lawrence and he's already 27. I mean it's not like he's. I mean, I know that's not old, but it's certainly not young.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, no, that's a good point. Let me see. How about Mike in Indiana? Hi, Mike. Mike in line four. Hello. Hey Mike. Yep, yep. Six foot, 280 pounds. Yeah. I was watching a special on Amazon prime, evolution of the Madden football game and they got to the year that ESPN did theirs, so they had your cameo on the ESPN football. I've never played Madden before.
Paulie
Ever?
Dan Patrick
Ever.
Paulie
That's like saying you had never had pizza.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, I just, I never got caught up in video game.
Paulie
When you missed the window just by a few years because of your age. If you didn't grow up in the late 70s, early 80s as a 10, 11, 12, 13 year old, you liked girls in cars. Well, we like to video.
Dan Patrick
Well, they didn't like me. I didn't have a car and I didn't have a girl.
Paulie
Oh, that. Well then you should have turned to video games like we did. Because it worked for me.
Dan Patrick
No, I got out of the house. You know, we were always out of the house. My mom never would have allowed us to stay in and play video games. Never would have happened because she would have put us to work there. Let's see, Mike in Atlanta, line two. Mike in Atlanta, line two. Hey Dan. Long time. First time? Yep. 5, 10, 160. Let's talk about, let's talk about the quarterback slide. Why don't we just get rid of it? If you run the corner and you're running the ball, tuck the ball in your arm and run. Why do we need the slide? The flag plant and college traditions. What about army and Navy stealing each other's mascots, live mascots, and then painting them or kidnapping them or whatever they do. And Florida State ripping up sod from a big game on the road, no problems with that. But the flag planning, that's kind of in front of everybody when it happens. So I think that's why, you know, it led to something that was the problem. It led to something. It could lead to something worse. If all of a sudden you go, hey, you're going to plant the flag or hey, you're going to take up some turf. You know the Army, Navy thing, that's completely different. I mean that's been going on for over 100 years doing that. And they're all in on it. They're all complicit on it. They have fun with it. But, you know, planning a flag and what it could lead to is the problem that I have with this. Yes, Marv. And especially when you're the home team and you lose, you're already angry that you lost. And now you're really going to rub it in my face. You're asking for a fight. I just don't understand what people don't understand about this.
Paulie
Yeah, Paulie, and these post game incidents, half the players have their helmets on, the other half don't. It's not like during the game when there's some type of brawl, 99% of the players have their helmets on and no one can really get hurt. It's one of those things. There's. There's fans, like you said, there's camera people, there's fans, there's staffers. Staffers are the ones you got to worry about because those guys are looking for a fight. They're not. They're looking to, you know, prove themselves.
Dan Patrick
Casey in Wisconsin, line one. Hi, Case. Morning, fellas. 62249. Okay.
Jack Thomas
You know, as long as we're playing.
Dan Patrick
Good ideal, bad ideal, you know, we have all these college rivalry trophy games, you know, the old oak and bucket, the ax, the jeweled shillelagh. You make Michigan, Ohio State a trophy game and the trophy is a flag. Problem solved. I'm sure there wouldn't be any problems after that. I'm going to say good idea, good ideal. Yeah, yeah. I'm okay with it. It just. This is. This game is different than any other game in America. You can talk about Notre Dame and usc. Like, what if Notre Dame went out there and all of a sudden they planted their flag at midfield? I mean, they have a great rivalry over the years, but it's not Michigan. And Ohio State is different than anybody else because of what's at stake. And we've seen what's at stake the last few years between these two. It's just different. And the tension. And you're a 23 and a half point favorite at home against a team that's not supposed to be very good. That's the issue. You got embarrassed at home. They are celebrating now, they're parading. Now they want to plant their flag. How are you going to act if. Or react if you're Ohio State? Yeah.
Paulie
Paul, one of my favorite memories of working on this show, about 15 years ago, you took us to a Michigan, Ohio State game at Ohio State. We were walking around about three hours for our kickoff, and it felt like there was a funeral going on. Everyone was serious and tense. And I go, what's going on here? And Dan, you said to me, this is serious. This is business. There's, there's no really enjoyment of the tailgate. They're showing up to get a win and then celebrate. I was like, it's a different tone.
Dan Patrick
And then all of a sudden, Ohio State blew him out. Yeah. Yes, Todd.
Todd
I'm just trying to compare it to other sports. The Yankee Red Sox rivalry or whatever is left of it. If a Yankee flag was put on.
Dan Patrick
The pitchers mat, they're playing 20 times a year.
Todd
Yeah, but say it was like a meaningful playoff game or something like that. A Yankee flag on the mound at Fenway or vice versa. If someone puts a Red Sox flan at Yankee Stadium on the mound, how is that not going to cause a problem? Or a Duke, North Carolina game doing some kind of dance or having your mascot spin around on mid court, that's going to stir something up.
Dan Patrick
Yes, I'm not in favor of that.
Todd
Ridiculous.
Dan Patrick
Yes, I'm not in favor of it. Yeah, because something could happen. You can prevent something from happening. Say, oh, come on, you get off my lawn guy. What's wrong with a little celebration there? Okay. All right. Take a break. Big Mike Golick will join us next. Fox Sports Radio has the best sports talk lineup in the nation. In the aftermath of a transformative election like the one we just had, it's hard to read the news without asking yourself every five seconds, how did we get here? That's exactly what we're always trying to figure out. On Fiasco, a history podcast from the co creators of Slow Burn. In our first season, Bush v. Gore, we examine an unmistakable turning point in American politics. The 2000 election, which came down to a recount in Florida and ended with one of the most controversial rulings in Supreme Court history. In many ways, it's the beginning of the story we're living through right now. So if you're trying to make sense of the present moment, check out Fiasco Bush v. Gore and find out how a statistical tie in the Florida vote count put the nation into an unprecedented holding pattern during which American voters waited with bated breath to find out whether Al Gore or George W. Bush would be the next president of the United States. Listen on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts or wherever you listen to podcasts.
Dan Patrick
More phone calls coming up. Andrew Luck in an hour from now, the new GM of Stanford football. He's Mike golden, co host of GoJo and Golic on DraftKings Network, former NFL defensive lineman joining us on the program. Good to see you, Mike. Let's, let's go with the quarterback sliding situation with Trevor Lawrence. And does the NFL, should the NFL look at this in the off season with any modifications?
Mike Golick
Well, I mean, really the issue has been the quarterbacks on the sideline. You have Pat Mahomes making that move like he's going to step out of bounds and going in bounds. Caleb Williams on Thanksgiving doing that and almost got sawed in half by Jack Campbell. And Caleb Williams said he had a problem with that hit. Well, you know what? I got a problem with you trying to fake going out of bounds and staying inbounds. You deserve to get smoked if you get smoked. So those are situations where, listen, defenders are playing at a disadvantage without question about hitting an offensive player, whether they get a penalty or even if there's no penalty, they get a letter during the week that they get fined $46,000 as well. As far as the sliding, Dan, that's such a tough bang bang play because the quarterback is going to try and get the first down. So they're going to try. They have to start their slide after the line because when they slide feet first, it goes where the butt is when they start to slide. So they have to wait an extra beat to slide while a defender gets gets kind of handcuffed on when they can hit him. So yes, I do think they're going to have to do something, but they're not, Dan, because they're not going to do anything that favors the defense. They're going to do everything. And I'm not saying this as a bitter former defensive lineman. I'm saying it because that's been the trend. The rule changes have all gone to the offense to try and make and for the health of the players, which has normally been the quarterbacks and the.
Dan Patrick
Wide receivers But I wondered, and we're workshopping this this morning, can I have a quarterback who acts like he's a punt returner, that he will signal he's giving himself up and if he extends that, then it's going to be a penalty. Like just you're running with the football and you have your hand up to say I'm going down. I, and I'm open to critique, criticism, but I'm trying to figure out.
Mike Golick
I get what you're saying. I get you're trying to have a signal that says I'm going down, but the problem's going to be again, when they're trying to get the first down, they want to reach the sticks and the defender wants to stop them from reaching the sticks, but they have all the protection if they're going to slide feet first. So even if they do it, what's considered late and the defender is basically already airborne. You know what the league says it's on the defender. The defender has to make the adjustment. Just like landing on the quarterback, the defender has to make the adjustment, which is ridiculous, but they're not going to change that. But you're, you're along the right lines of finding a way to give up for the quarterback to give himself up. Just like, just like receivers do when they want to call a timeout, they just hit the ground and they're done, you know, and they call timeout. So the clock stops. I don't know if it'll be too quick to give like a fair catch and slide because again, they're worried about getting the first down. But I think you're on the right path of. We have to find an answer to this. Now. They hit by, you know, Shair was, was what he led with his forearm and his head. I mean, that, that was, that was, that one we have to take out of the equation.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, that was intent and that's why I had no problem with him being suspended. How would you describe Jameis Winston if somebody had never seen him play?
Mike Golick
I mean, I think you, you get exactly what you saw in that game. You look at all the years where he started double digit games, he had double digit interceptions, including the classic year in Tampa when he had 33 touchdowns and 30 interceptions. But he always, if he started more than 10 or 11 games, he always had in the teens of interceptions. So it's, it's kind of hit. And he's been that way from Florida State. He's been a gunslinger. He just tries, he feels he, the ball will go through the defender and into his receiver's hands. He has that mentality and at times it looks great and at times it costs you like it did in the game against Denver.
Dan Patrick
Well, he wants to be Brett Favre. Yeah, but he's not Brett Favre, you know. No, no, but, but I do love the personality that he brings. Like he gives us a chance.
Mike Golick
He gives us a better, he gives a better pregame speech than Brett Favre, that's for sure. I mean, listen, teammates love him. I mean, they love him. And, and just think about if the Browns actually started him for the entire season now, he would probably have multiple double digit interceptions. But the offense, you saw the statistics up. They, they laid him out last night. They're just a better team with Winston at quarterback. But they're screwed. I mean, the next two years, 72.9 mil each year is the cap hit for DeSean Watson.
Dan Patrick
Watching that Buffalo game. Worst snow game that you ever played.
Mike Golick
In was where probably my last year in 93 with the dolphins, we played the Cowboys in Dallas before the new stadium, obviously. And there was a big snowstorm and we played in like, like a foot of snow. That's when Leah. That's when we were kicking the game winning short field goal. It was blocked and Leon let slid into it and we got repossession of it and kicked the game winning field goal. That was, that was probably about a foot of snow. And quite honestly, Dan, I know I played nine years in the NFL and that's supposedly good, but I was not a great athlete. And when the weather was worse, everybody's athletic ability and, and listen, I'm a self denigrating guy, but I'm serious about that. All of a sudden the old linemen weren't as strong as they could be because they couldn't use their leverage or plant their feet as much. And everybody wasn't as fast as they normally were. So I loved it when the weather was crappy.
Dan Patrick
You were Reggie White in the snow.
Mike Golick
Yeah, I was. The poor man's Reggie White.
Dan Patrick
Yes, very Reggie. You were Reggie. Very White. He's Mike Golick, co host of Gojo and GOLIC on DraftKings Network. Where do you stand with the planting the flag after a game?
Mike Golick
Mike, listen. I mean, I know they asked Baker Mayfield about it. By the way. Remember, Baker Mayfield planted a flag in artificial turf, so it didn't even stay up. I mean, all of a sudden there are fights like crazy that are breaking out. What's the easiest thing to do, Dan, is to stop the plant flagging. Just outlaw it just say you can't do it anymore because it's just, these are 18 to 22 year olds who are just ramped up, testosterone filled guys, ramped up knowing, you know, you had 60 minutes to fight and win a football game and you didn't. And now you're showing more effort in fighting a team from putting a flag in your logo. The easiest thing is to just outlaw it. But players will find something else to do. You know what they'll do? The just pick Michigan, Michigan State. Michigan will just go to the center of the Ohio State logo and just start kicking it with their cleats and just turfing it that way. And a fight will still start. So you probably have to ban the flag planting and then you have to come down heavy on players. If there is a post game fight, you have plenty of film and tape to see who's doing what and you're going to have to discipline them. I mean, it's just, it's getting carried away.
Dan Patrick
Your Notre Dame Fighting Irish look pretty good. I don't, you know, you have the Northern Illinois interruption, but they're, they're a really good balanced team. I don't know how good they are, do you?
Mike Golick
I think the biggest improvement, two biggest improvements during the year was the offensive line, which was really young, but they've all grown together now and Riley Leonard in the passing game has gotten a lot better. Their defense is great and the running game is great because that old line has matured. My fear, Dan, is they've blown out everybody since Northern Illinois. Now USC was a little closer, they needed a couple pick sixes, but my fear is when they have to pass. Now Riley Leonard is improving in passing, but they've been blowing teams out. But what if they're down two scores and need to pass to get back in the game? That part of the passing game hasn't really been tested yet. And the competition only gets stronger in the playoffs. So that may get tested. But they're. Listen, they're playing as well as anybody in the country right now and they're going to have a home game in what I hope will be a warm weather SEC team and I hope there's three feet of snow.
Dan Patrick
How about Miami in South Bend?
Mike Golick
So, yeah, listen, my, both my boys were on Notre Dame when they played in the sun bowl in El Paso and they played the U and it was like 30 degrees and the Miami players, I mean, it was a blowout. They just did not want to play in the cold. So that's where Greg Sankey and the SEC is going to get mad when they see their teams traveling to Penn State, to Ohio State, to Notre Dame and playing in the first round.
Dan Patrick
And Boise State and.
Mike Golick
Yeah, that's right. And Boise State as well.
Dan Patrick
Yes, your NFL MVP right now is.
Mike Golick
You know what I mean? I think you got to look at Josh Allen and what he's doing with that offense. I mean, Cook's running well to help the offense. They got help with the receiver position. But they go how Josh Allen goes. And right now they're one loss by Kansas City away from having the number one seed. But they still got to get over the hump in the playoffs. But it's tough not to look at, obviously the quarterbacks, Lamar Jackson, but I would take Josh Allen over him. And you have to look at Saquon Barkley. You know, I'm one of those. Not a big fan of the Heisman because it normally goes to a quarterback, but it won't this year. It'll go to Travis Hunter. Rightfully so. So I kind of like when other positions get involved in these races.
Dan Patrick
You know, it's weird to say this maybe, maybe not to you, but I think the most valuable player on the Eagles is somebody that you wouldn't expect to be named the most valuable player on the Eagles.
Mike Golick
Who is that?
Dan Patrick
Jalen Carter.
Mike Golick
Let me tell you, you know when people have started bringing up Dan, that he is kind of the reincarnation of Jerome Brown, my former teammate, and that, that is spot on. I mean, Jalen Carter plays on the other side of the line just like Jerome did. Quickness, strength, leverage. He is a one man wrecking crew. I would completely agree with you. We know that's not going to happen. But as far as being an mvp, but MVP of the team, I mean, you could certainly see that probably be Saquon Barkley, but what an impact that middle interior D line is having.
Dan Patrick
More of a mess. The jets or the Giants?
Mike Golick
I would say the jets because they gave up assets to build the team. Not only gave up assets, but brought in older veteran players for a run. Kind of like what Tampa Bay did with Tom and it worked out because they got a Super Bowl. But now you brought in players like a Tyron Smith who's. Whose career is probably over. You brought in other older players and you traded assets away for players and it didn't work. You have to blow the entire thing up with the Giants. At least they're. They didn't. They don't have the aging vets and they didn't give up assets to bring in players. So I would say the jets, but they're both in bad shape. But I would say the jets in worse shape.
Dan Patrick
Good to talk to you. My best to the family. Thanks for joining us.
Mike Golick
You got it, buddy.
Dan Patrick
That's Mike Golick, co host of Gojo and GOLIC on DraftKings Network and of course, former defensive lineman played at Notre Dame, Nick and Irvine. Hey, Nick. Well, line two, do we have that, Marvin? Oh, we can't take phone call. Okay. All right. We, we had a power hit. I don't know what happened, but the generator came on. So if you were watching on Peacock, you saw us in the dark there. You, I don't know if you could hear us, but you could see us there.
Paulie
But on radio, perfectly clear.
Dan Patrick
Yes. Yeah. So we'll, we'll see if we can get some phone calls in here, but we took a power hit. The big Germans all over this. That's, that's all. We're in good hands.
Paulie
He's waving his arms, directing traffic.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, he's doing something there. We'll talk to Andrew Luck coming up next hour. By the way, Rob Manfred, the baseball commissioner, said that there is a buzz around the golden at bat rule among baseball owners. So I'm going to take a break and I'm going to come back with this possibility of a golden at bat in baseball. We're back after this and the Dan Patrick Show. In the aftermath of a transformative election like the one we just had, it's hard to read the news without asking yourself every five seconds, how did we get here? That's exactly what we're always trying to figure out on Fiasco, a history podcast from the co creators of Slow Burn. In our first season, Bush v. Gore, we examine an unmistakable turning point in American politics. The 2000 election which came down to a recount in Florida and ended with one of the most controversial rulings in Supreme Court history. In many ways, it's the beginning of the story we're living through right now. So if you're trying to make sense of the present moment, check out Fiasco Bush v. Gore and find out how a statistical tie in the Florida vote count put the nation into an unprecedented holding pattern, during which American voters waited with bated breath to find out whether Al Gore or George W. Bush would be the next president of the United States. Listen on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you listen to podcasts.
Dan Patrick

Paulie
Knicks are 12 and 8.
Dan Patrick
12 and 8. Spurs at the Suns. All right, warriors at the Nuggets. And then you have the Grizzlies at the Mavs. That'll be fun. All right, no football tonight. So the NBA has the. The platform, the stage to themselves there.
Marvin
Good to see John Morant back. Yeah, I like seeing his name out there.
Paulie
They won six in a rough.
Dan Patrick
Yeah.
Marvin
The Luca over under is 46 and a half points plus rebounds and assists.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, John Moran over under is 20 and a half. Just points there, but I'd like that. You can bet. Warriors Nugget Steph Curry over under five, made three pointers tonight.
Marvin
Feels low to me, but it does. They're just begging you to take that. They're just begging you to take it.
Dan Patrick
I'm going to take the under the Emirates NBA cup and you can get in on all the action. DraftKings sportsbook the well, not the but an official sports betting partner. The NBA bet $5. Only on DraftKings crown is your we have done done or back in Coming up. Also the golden at bat possibility. This was on a podcast, I think back in October, the end the baseball commissioner Rob Manfred revealed the golden at bat rule has been discussed at owners meetings. So he's on a podcast John Irand the Puck podcast and they discussed this golden at bat. Now he said that there's a variety of rule change ideas right now, but he did say that there was a little buzz around the owners for this golden at bat. Here is the commissioner. There are a variety of things that are being talked about out there. One of them there was a little buzz around at an owner's meeting was the idea of a golden AT that is, you know, putting your best player out there out of order at a particular point in the game. That rule and things like that are in the conversation only stage right now. Okay, but you're the commissioner and you said this publicly. There's a lot of things that happen behind the scenes that you don't say, hey, you know, we've discussed this. This feels like this was on purpose. Let me put this out there. But back in October and nobody reacted to this until now that somebody goes, wait a minute, commissioner's thinking about a golden at bat. So let's say the Yankees have The bases loaded, 2 ounce, bottom of the night. They could bring up Aaron Judge to the plate even if it wasn't his turn in the order. A one time replacement, not a substitution like a pinch hitter. So let's say 7, 8 and 9 are going to be batting and you decide that you're going to do maybe seven, eight and then you're going to bring Aaron Judge up and that's the golden at bat a one time only. I hate it, hate it. I hate the runner at second base to start extra innings. And I understand this, that you want a younger audience, more excitement. I think the commissioner's done a lot of nice things. I think he's, he's done well. I just don't, don't go too gimmicky.
Todd
Yes, Todd, I'm trying to come up with an analogy. Say in the NBA, it's down to, you know, it's a 12 point game in the final seconds and a terrible foul shooter gets intentionally fouled. Then you can bring on your best foul shooter to finish up the game. Yeah, that would be ridiculous to be able to be allowed to do that.
Dan Patrick
Yeah. Yeah. I mean, I don't know what the other analogies are in baseball with other sports, but, you know, to me, a Goldenette band, it just does baseball need that. Like, it felt like baseball had a good year, a great year, and now it just feels gimmicky, like, hey, hold on. Time for the golden at bat, ladies and gentlemen. It's time for the golden at bat. Now, do you make the bat gold? I mean, how far are we doing this?
Paulie
Don't give my ideas.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, yeah, Paul. Yeah.
Paulie
It appears the Athletics. Jason Stark wrote about it, that it could only appear be appealed to losing teams. The team that is down at the time and you could bump up in the lineup and then Aaron Judge, for example, would go back to his regular place in the lineup if the game kept going on.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, they don't like this. Yes, Todd, I think if you do.
Todd
That and there's no outs or one out, it should count as two outs if that Golden Bat player doesn't come through.
Dan Patrick
Innings over. No, I'm not adding to an already silly.
Todd
Aaron Judge is coming up. One out, first and second. He grounds out. Actually, it's a double play.
Marvin
And then if your team is up by more than 10 runs, then you guys have to pitch blindfolded then to equip it out so that then the other team has a better chance of winning.
Paulie
No mitts. The other team has no mitts.
Todd
Oh, no mitts at all.
Dan Patrick
I would like it if they said, hey, you can decide. You can bring the left field wall in, and then you mobilize it, and then all of a sudden it comes in like five feet or you move it back five feet. Extra innings, you know. Green monster comes. Yes. Are we turning this into Rock and Jock? Remember mtv? Everything rocking Jock.
Mike Golick
You know what?
Dan Patrick
There's a basket.
Mike Golick
It's worth.
Dan Patrick
It's worth 80. Oh, yeah, I know. And if you hit it in this little section here, hit this target here, you're going to get. I. We don't need it. And the commissioner didn't need to bring this up unless he really believes that there's some momentum here, because that's what commissioners do. Commissioners will get an idea and then they'll kind of float it out there. Hey, you know, nobody's decided on anything. But you know what? We. Somebody brought up this the other day. When I hear something like that, the way it's presented, I go, oh boy, here it comes. Yes, Todd.
Todd
So if the test balloon, using your analogy, isn't immediately popped, they're gonna just keep this going and have another round of conversations about something like this?
Dan Patrick
Yes.
Todd
What a waste of time.
Dan Patrick
If the owners. According to the commissioner, there's buzz amongst the owners. That's the key. The owners employ the commissioner. How about we come up with a dumber idea and we give it to major league baseball?
Paulie
Just the guys to do it.
Dan Patrick
Yes. What would you. What's. What's the rule? That would, you know, on the surface it would be like, hey, that's not a bad idea. But we know it's really a stupid idea. It's a crazy idea. Yes. Todd.
Todd
If you try to pick somebody off of first base on the second time, if you don't get him, he gets the base. Run, run. First gets to go to second.
Dan Patrick
Okay.
Todd
Maybe even one unsuccessful.
Dan Patrick
I don't think that's that crazy. We've already made the bases bigger. Like, you know, communication, pitch count. Like it. They got the Dodgers, Yankee, I mean, they got everything they wanted. This isn't how I would build off of that season. In the off season, we're going to have a golden at bat. Paulie, you have a dumber idea?
Paulie
Of course I do, Dan. I'm chock full of them.
Dan Patrick
You lead the league.
Paulie
I'm only being partly facetious. If you throw a pitch 100 miles an hour or over, it's not a strike, it's a ball. Discourage pitches over 100, less Tommy John. More. More action on the field.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, but there's a lot of surgeons who are not going to be happy.
Paulie
With that surgeon lobby.
Dan Patrick
Nobody is blowing out their arm anymore. Remember the good old days when you'd blow out your arm? Yes.
Marvin
Imagining a Tommy John commercial in my head now where it's like.
Dan Patrick
Yeah.
Marvin
Do you suffer from.
Dan Patrick
Ulnar? Yeah, Torn ulnar muscle or whatever.
Marvin
I asked my doctor about Tommy John and now I've got my life back.
Paulie
Nothing is everything.
Dan Patrick
Yes, Todd.
Todd
Each bad has one situation in the game where you can remove one outfielder from the other team, depending on. All right, the right field is out for this matter.
Dan Patrick
I like that.
Marvin
Every fourth down, if you're going for it, you're allowed to add in an extra wide receiver if you're on the offense. But your team is losing and it's a two minute drill.
Dan Patrick
Wait, whose voice how about that?
Marvin
This is what I think we should do.
Dan Patrick
Okay.
Marvin
This is what I think we should do. You add an extra wide 2 minute drill if you're losing.
Dan Patrick
Andrew Luck will join us coming up. He's the new GM of Stanford.
Paulie
How are you thinking this all.
Dan Patrick
Final hour on this Tuesday on the Way Dan Patrick show.

The Dan Patrick Show
Episode: Hour 2 – Mike Golic, Golden At-Bat
Release Date: December 3, 2024
Host: Dan Patrick
Guests: Mike Golic (Co-Host of GoJo and Golic on DraftKings Network)
The second hour of The Dan Patrick Show dives deep into several hot topics in the NFL, including Jameis Winston's controversial performance, the ongoing debate over quarterback sliding rules, team standings with minimal Super Bowl chances, and the potential introduction of a "Golden At-Bat" rule in Major League Baseball (MLB). The episode features insightful commentary from guest Mike Golic, who brings his extensive NFL experience to the discussion.
The show kicks off with an in-depth analysis of Jameis Winston's recent game performance. Dan Patrick and his co-hosts discuss whether Winston had a good game, considering his impressive stats juxtaposed with critical mistakes.
Dan Patrick (02:10): "Here's one for you. Did Jameis Winston have a good game last night?"
Marvin (02:53): "No."
Dan Patrick (02:59): "I'm going to say yes... he throws four touchdowns, he throws for almost 500 yards. But he gives you a chance."
Despite Winston's four touchdown passes and nearly 500 yards, his three interceptions and two pick-sixes sparked debate among the hosts.
Historical Context: Patrick highlights Winston's place among NFL quarterbacks with high passing yards in their first five starts since 1970, positioning him third on the list.
The discussion shifts to NFL team standings, focusing on teams with winning records but slim chances of making the Super Bowl.
The Broncos are highlighted as the top contender among teams with winning records but low Super Bowl prospects, with Todd adding skepticism about the Seahawks' chances despite their record.
A significant portion of the discussion centers around the NFL's quarterback sliding rules and recent incidents involving Trevor Lawrence.
Dan Patrick (10:29): "Is there something that the NFL does when it comes to quarterbacks sliding?"
Mike Golic (21:24): "I do think they're going to have to do something, but they're not, Dan, because they're not going to do anything that favors the defense."
Golic expresses concerns about the current rules, suggesting that they disproportionately protect quarterbacks while disadvantaging defenders. He acknowledges the complexity of modifying these rules without compromising offensive play.
The hosts critique the tradition of flag planting after intense rivalries, particularly between Michigan and Ohio State, arguing that it leads to unnecessary conflicts.
The conversation underscores the heightened emotions surrounding college football rivalries and the potential for flag planting to incite violence.
Guest Mike Golic shares his insights on potential NFL MVP candidates and team performances.
Dan Patrick (31:28): "You know, it's weird to say this maybe, maybe not to you, but I think the most valuable player on the Eagles is somebody that you wouldn't expect to be named the most valuable player on the Eagles."
Mike Golic (31:29): "Jalen Carter plays on the other side of the line just like Jerome [Brown] did. He is a one-man wrecking crew."
Golic praises Jalen Carter's impact on the Eagles, comparing him to his former teammate Jerome Brown, and discusses the importance of linemen in team success.
The latter part of the show transitions to baseball, where Dan Patrick and Mike Golic discuss the potential implementation of a "Golden At-Bat" rule proposed by MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred.
Dan Patrick (39:00): "He revealed the golden at bat rule has been discussed at owners meetings... a one-time replacement, not a substitution like a pinch hitter."
Mike Golic (27:39): "The easiest thing is to just outlaw it just say you can't do it anymore because... it's getting carried away."
Both hosts express skepticism and concern over the proposed rule, comparing it unfavorably to other sports' rule innovations and fearing it may introduce gimmicks that detract from the game's integrity.
The episode concludes with a humorous exchange about the challenges of implementing new rules in sports and a light-hearted discussion on potential future rule changes.
Overall, Hour 2 – Mike Golic, Golden At-Bat offers a comprehensive look at current NFL controversies, team dynamics, and speculative rule changes in MLB, enriched by expert opinions from Mike Golic and lively discussions among the hosts.
This summary provides a structured and comprehensive overview of the key discussions and insights from the episode, making it accessible and informative for listeners who may not have tuned in.
