We'll be there Monday through Friday with a Super bowl week. First come, first serve as far as seats go. Stat of the day brought to you by Panini America. The official trading cards of the Dan Patrick Show. Backstabbing and betrayal are the name of the game on an all new season of the Dan Note. The traders head back to the Scottish Highlands for a murder mystery competition like no other. The traitors streaming now only on Peacock. Wasn't Michael Rapaport on that? And everybody couldn't wait to get rid of him. Michael Rapaport, the actor being Michael Rapaport. And of course he's annoying and but I thought he was being recruited to be annoying on that show, the Traitors in the Scottish Highlands, that's on Peacock, which is where you can find this program. Thank you for joining us, our streaming partner. And we say good morning to our radio affiliates around the country. Spent a lot of time, maybe too much time on the Buffalo Bills situation, but anytime I get an owner at a press conference, that's shoot shooting fish in a barrel for the most part when you get them and you could ask them questions because normally you don't get access to talk to an owner. And the Buffalo media got a gift yesterday. They got to ask about the situation with Sean McDermott and moving forward in Buffalo. New stadium coming up. But the fact that, or apparently the fact that Josh Allen was so emotional, maybe more emotional than in previous years, maybe led to the final decision that Terry Pula was going to fire Sean McDermott. All right, 877 3DP. Shell operator Tyler is sitting by seat and pole question from hour one. And then what are we going with in hour two? Okay, well, I'll update you on our one's poll question, then I'll give you our two's poll question after that. All right. Should owners speak at sports press conferences? Your options? There are no. Hell no. Absolutely not. And sure sure has 47 to that vote. But unfortunately, if you add up all of the other versions of no, it still comes out to the answer is no. And then which team would you rather coach right now, the Buffalo Bills or the Baltimore Ravens? Buffalo bills have 66% of that vote. Okay. I want an owner to speak, I think he should speak it to a fan base. I think that your fans, your city, they're building that stadium, helping you build that stadium. This is a state of the union. That's. I don't think that's asking much for an owner to get in front of the media and just say, we have a finite amount of time. It's going to be an hour. And, you know, do it as a town hall or let fans ask you. How about that? That's even better. Yeah. See, which would you prefer? An owner that doesn't speak much or a Jerry Jones type that is. Has his fingers in everything that happens? Owner who doesn't speak. There's a. There's a point where it can be too much. Yeah. Oh, yeah. Yes. Yes. Jerry just puts too much pressure on the coach. And, you know, when he speaks and it's about him. You know, this is how he got into this position, because he wanted it to be about him instead of sharing the spotlight with Jimmy Johnson. No, this is about me. And that led to their divorce and the acrimony that lasted decades between these two. I don't want to walk into that. I mean, you get to coach the Cowboys, but you're not really coaching the Cowboys because Jerry's going to get all the credit. You're going to get the blame. All right, few more phone calls in here. Chris in Syracuse. Hi, Chris. What do you have for me? Hey, thanks, Dan. Hey. Off your first hour interview and. Yeah, you just mentioned it, Dan. I wonder, a lot of the Buffalo.
Dan Patrick
Buffalo media has said Josh Allen has.
Paulie
Never been this emotional at a press conference after a devastating playoff loss.
Dan Patrick
And I know he didn't play well, but.
Paulie
Yeah, I wonder, too, if part of the reason he was so much more emotional was because he had a pretty good idea. In his eyes, he cost his coach's job. I think it's fair to ask that or wonder that, because when we were talking to the Buffalo Bills beat reporter Jay Skirsky, you know, Josh Allen didn't meet with the media on Sunday, so they play their game Saturday, and then he normally meets with the media on Sunday. I get the feeling that he knew that Sean McDermott was going to be fired and wanted to wait until it happened and ownership and GM get in front of the media before he does that. That's the sense. And. And maybe he was overcome with emotion because he knew if he plays like Josh Allen, they win that game and he didn't. And he knows that Sean McDermott is going to get fired or the feeling that he's going to get fired. Hodges in North Carolina. Hodges, welcome to the program. What's up? DP 6, 3, 2, 15.
Dan Patrick
First time long time.
Paulie
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
So talking about Sean McDermott and we're.
Paulie
Talking about the Buffalo Bills and we're looking for a new head coach and I am not a Buffalo Bills fan, but Mike McCarthy, well, he might be number one on the Steelers list, which would be interesting if Mike McCarthy is coaching where Aaron Rodgers was playing and of course they had their falling out. Would Mike McCarthy bring Aaron Rodgers back? Richard in LA. Hi, Richard. What's on your mind? Good morning guys.
Dan Patrick
I just was thinking like, same as.
Paulie
What happened in Tampa Bay with Tony Dungy, why not bring Don Gruden? He's flashy, higher, he has a proven track record and I think he deserves another shot. He kind of got, you know, tossed and turned in that whole Dan, Dan Snider nonsense and NFL garbage, but I think he would do a pretty good job. Well, I don't know if they want a splashy hire. They just want the right hire, the right person. Who is that person? Is it an offensive minded person? It still comes down to, you know, the roster. How good is the roster now? I love James Cook. He, he. I wish they would have used him more. You got some tight ends, you know, your wide receivers aren't threatening and your defense not as formidable as it's been before. So yes, you did have an open path to go at least to the AFC title game. I get that. But do I think they're better than Denver? Not, not the rosters like, but I still, if I got Josh Allen, that's an advantage nobody else has. But I have to get to that point where Josh Allen will be the difference. Well, he would have been the difference if he played like Josh Allen. They win. But Denver, to me, young team, got a quarterback on a rookie deal. I got a really good defense in there and they can add to that roster. So I'd feel, you know. Is Buffalo better than Jacksonville? Well, yeah, they beat Jacksonville and Jacksonville. Are they better than the Texans? Yeah. Are they better than the Patriots? No. Are they better than Denver? Now I'm looking at the roster once again. The Patriots have a quarterback on a rookie deal and you got to factor that in.
Dan Patrick
Yes, Marv, again the optics would have said you lost to a second or third year quarterback in Drake May, like you said on his rookie deal in a first year head coach in Mike Rabel, you know, with the Patriots they wouldn't have accepted that either. You can't lose that game.
Paulie
No, no. They had to get to the AFC title game. It felt like. And even then we don't know if the owner would have kept Sean McDermott. Yes, Mark.
Dan Patrick
No, I think you had to win because they would have faced the Patriots in the AFC Championship game. The optics just look so bad if you had lost to the Patriots, who are basically an upstart.
Paulie
The NFL honors finalist was announced. So MVP and other awards for the 2025 season. These are the players who were nominated for most valuable. This will be the NFL Honors ceremony Feb. 5, and voters were asked to rank their top five picks for all of these categories. Top five for MVP, top three for other awards. Josh Allen, Trevor Lawrence, Drake May, Christian McCaffrey, and Matthew Stafford for MVP. If I told you in August this would be the list, I think you would go Trevor Lawrence. I had McCaffrey as the offensive player of the year when the season started. Matthew Stafford. The reason why I didn't pick the Rams, because I didn't know if Matthew Stafford could stay healthy. If you would have said, hey, he's going to play all year and throw 40 touchdowns, I would have picked the Rams to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl. It's that good a roster. Drake May. We would have been surprised. We'd be like, man, that's a pretty big jump for a second year quarterback with, you know, a new head coach there. Defensive player of the year. Will Anderson Jr. III of the Texans, Nick Bonito of the Broncos, Miles Garrett, The Browns, Aiden Hutchinson, Micah Parsons. Well, Micah, we would have said, of course, but if I said, well, he's going to be on Green Bay, then you would have been like, oh, okay. Will Anderson, great player. It's Miles Garrett. Miles Garrett will win this. It's not even close to offensive player of the year. Drake May, Christian McCaffrey, Puka Nakua, Bijon Robinson and Jackson Smith. New Jigba. I'm going to say Pukinaku is going to be your winner there. And I don't think anybody would have been surprised if I said that at the beginning of the year. Offensive rookie of the year. Jackson Dart, Ameka Buka, Travion Henderson. Boy, he's an underrated player. The Patriots, Ted McMillan of the Panthers and Tyler Shuck of the Saint. All right, yeah. Who is going to win offensive rookie of the year? Tyler Shuck did a really good job of the saints. McMillan is a big time receiver. Henderson underrated. Buka started out really hot, but then so did Tampa and then Jackson Dart. Wow, man. I'm gonna, I'm gonna give it to Ted McMillan with the Panthers. They made the playoffs and he was a go to guy. He was a big time in that game in the playoffs. Defensive rookie of the year. I thought they already announced it. This is the Associated Press. Carson Swishinger of the Browns is going to win this. Comeback player of the year. Stefan Diggs, Aiden Hutchinson, Trevor Lawrence, Christian McCaffrey and Dak Prescott. I mean, Hutchinson came back, but I don't know what kind of numbers he had. Detroit didn't make the playoffs. I'm gonna say Trevor Lawrence. I'll say Trevor Lawrence, Coach of the year. Boy, this is competitive. Liam Cohen, Jacksonville. Ben Johnson, Bears. Mike McDonald, Seattle. Kyle Shanahan, San Francisco. Mike Vrabel, Patriots. I think this was the best coaching job Kyle Shanahan did, and I don't know when the voting is done. I'm going to guess at the end of the regular season, I'm going to give it to Liam Cohen. I'd have no problem. It. Well, they're all worthy. Mike McDonald did a wonderful job. It'll probably emphasize. Re. Emphasize. What I've said is nobody really looks at Seattle and gives them credit that they deserve, and maybe that'll, you know, bear out in the voting here that Ben or Mike McDonald will not get it. Bear on the voting.
Dan Patrick
Maybe you're leaning towards Ben Jones.
Paulie
Thank you, John. There's also the assistant coach of the year. I. I didn't know they gave out the best assistant coach. Vic Fangio, defensive coordinator for the Eagles. Brian Flores, D.C. for the Vikings. Vance Joseph, D.C. for the Broncos. Clint Kubiak of the Seahawks, O.C. and Josh McDaniels, Patriots, O.C. i'm going to give it to Vance Joseph of the Broncos, defensive coordinator. Look at all those former Broncos in there.
Dan Patrick
Fangio, McDaniels, they're loading up in there.
Paulie
Thank you, Todd. The NFL Honors hosted by John Ham. That will be February 5th. They have a red carpet there as well. Yeah. Paul, how about an award for a guy who kind of comes from nowhere to help his team, but not MVP worthy, like a bench guy who helps.
Dan Patrick
Like Mac Jones for the 49ers.
Paulie
He deserves something for keeping them afloat. They keep him afloat award. Oh, they keep them afloat or.
Dan Patrick
Okay, push for that, Dan.
Paulie
Okay, I'll see what I can do. You know, my agenda is pretty, you know, it's hefty here. I got a lot of. I got to get Steve Garvey in the hall of Fame. I got to get Mel Kuiper into the hall of Fame. Who else do I have to get in the hall of Fame? Barry Melrose into the hall of Fame. Sonny Vaquero into the Basketball hall of Fame. I'm busy, Todd.
Dan Patrick
How about a Foals Gold award if.
Paulie
Stidham wins the next few games?
Dan Patrick
Foals Gold.
Paulie
So the audience was hoping to hear from you and this is what happens.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, well, Nick Foles and what he did with Philadelphia.
Paulie
Yeah, I got it. I got it. How about we take a break? Booger McFarlane is going to join. Join us on loan from the mothership. And then the bizarre story about the 49ers. They're looking into everything that led to an injury plagued season, including a power station nearby their facility. So this is a theory making the rounds on the Internet and it's crept into the locker room with all the different injuries and maybe this has to do with excessive exposure to a power grid. They've been in Santa clara training since 19, the early 1980s, and the substation came in a couple of years later. But now, I mean, even their general manager had to address this yesterday. So we'll have somebody who's actually covering this story if that has led to this rash of injuries for the 49ers. Take a break. More phone calls. But up next, Booger McFarland Dan Patrick Show. Was like the Rich Eisen Show Family Feud debacle. With that being said, would you consider a rematch with the Rich Eisen show if it meant that the winning show would receive a sports Emmy? Thank you. Well, if you're not getting a sports Emmy for it, would I do a rematch? No, probably not. No. We did it. I mean, we dominated. Nothing left to prove. It's kind of like Michael Jordan, like, you know, don't. Although he did come back with the Wizard. I'll take on another show, but, I mean, this is, you know, single elimination and Rich Eisen Show. They got humiliated. Maybe NFL Live. Maybe you take on them. Yes. You know, I really didn't appreciate, though, when Rich, after the celebrity Family Feud thing, Rich got up in the press conference and said, you know, I didn't want Del Tufo. I didn't want Del Tufo. Somebody else pushed Del Tufo on me. And I thought that that was unfair because Del Tufo is a good guy. Yeah, he did. He pointed fingers. He did. Yeah. He blamed everybody. Brockman told me to get Del Tufo and I didn't want him. So I just want to let everybody. I agree. That's messed up. I agree. Is Booger McFarlane there with this?
Dan Patrick
Sure is.
Paulie

Dan Patrick
What's up, big fella? How we doing?
Paulie
I'm good. I'm good. When are you coming down for Meat Friday?
Dan Patrick
You know what? We've been talking about this Meat Friday thing for so long. I think. I think what we're going to do is this. I'll be in Santa Clara, San Francisco, San Jose, wherever the hell we're going to be at. I'm going to put it on my schedule. If we're going to do meet Friday for the Super Bowl, I'll be there.
Paulie
Okay. I got to make sure that I plan the menu for you in mind. Like, anything off limits here.
Dan Patrick
As long as you don't have squirrel and possum, I pretty much eat everything else.
Paulie
Seaton, make sure we take squirrel off the menu. I mean, I don't know if we could send it back, but okay. Did you eat squirrel growing up when.
Dan Patrick
You grew up in the country? Dp, you eat some. Everything I've eaten squirrel, rabbit. Never ate possum or raccoon, but squirrel and rabbit definitely have eaten those.
Paulie
All right, well, let's get to football stuff here. Sean McDermott was fired because what.
Dan Patrick
I think regardless of what the owner said, and, you know, that press conference and, and the debacle that it was, I think he was fired. Because when, when you look at it on the surface, they have the best quarterback in football. And I think over the last couple years, he's proven that. And for that, they have nothing to show for it. And Josh Allen is entering his prime. And when you have the best player in the sport, kind of like when the warriors had Steph Curry, when the Bulls had Michael Jordan, like, you got to win something, you got to show something. And maybe, just maybe, Sean McDermott got them to the precipice the way that Mark Jackson did the warriors, but you need Steve Curry to get him over the hump. And so I think at his core, Terry Pula is thinking that Sean McDermott got this guy to the precipice, but I need somebody else to get us over the hump. Now, the press conference and his reasoning for firing him, that's a whole nother story because he made a bunch of excuses and a lot of finger pointing. But I think at the core, the reason he fired him was because he couldn't get them over the hump.
Paulie
Best coaching vacancy right now is where.
Dan Patrick
Man, I mean, before yesterday, I would have said Buffalo. I think it's Baltimore. I love Steve Boschotti, man, because, like, and how could you not after that press conference? Ozzy Newsom, Eric Dacosta, what they do in Baltimore, the facility, like, just so many things. And on top of that, you got Lamar Jackson. I think that core group, that culture of going to work at that place every day, DP to me would be the best. Also, book don't do snow and cold weather. So why the hell would I go to Buffalo? I'm not going way up there, buddy. No, there's no. Zero chance.
Paulie
Okay, so that press conference, though, yesterday made you have some trepidation about Buffalo.
Dan Patrick
Because I saw two people who, you know, we want our leadership to take. Take advocacy and take ownership of the decisions that they make. There was. There was seemingly no ownership yesterday. You know, Brandon Beam started to waffle, and then Terry Pula jumped in and basically said, hey, about that Keon Coleman pick. That wasn't on this guy. It was on the coaching staff. And then later he tried to come back and walk it back. When you're in a position of leadership, when you're right, you tell people you're right. When you're wrong, you tell people you're right. You always, you're always the guy that stands up there. And. And takes all the bullets. Yesterday was a master class in evasion in, in. In. In evasive maneuvers. Based on the answers to the questions, I think if you're a head coach, why would you. Why would you go into that situation and work for Terry Pula or would you work for Steve Bashade? I think the reason people are going to choose Buffalo is because of Josh Allen. But if it weren't for Josh Allen, that job goes, I think goes behind Tennessee, it goes behind Baltimore. But because of Josh Allen and because of his greatness and him being the best player in football, I think somebody notable is still going to take the job.
Paulie
Chuck A. Booker McFarlane from the Mothership. Who has more pressure, Jared Stidham or Jared Stidham's teammates?
Dan Patrick
I think Jared Stidham, because I think the expectations of what Jared Stidham's teammates has been established throughout the season. You know the defense is going to be stellar. You know that the offense is going to be ran by Sean Payton. I actually would throw another variable in there, DP Sean Payton. Because Sean Payton has done something that I don't know if you guys have talked about. Remember when he was in New Orleans and Drew brees missed those five or six games? Teddy Bridgewater came in and went 5, 0. So Sean Payton has proven he can win with the backup quarterback. Now, Jared Stum is a better backup based on, not my words, but based on Sean Payton's words, because Sean Payton told us Jared Stum is one of the best 32 quarterbacks in football. So if that's the case, then pressure on you, Sean Payton, we've seen you do it before in New Orleans. Now can you do it again with Jared Stum, who you told us was a better player? So I think the pressure is on Sean Payton. Everybody else can be themselves, but can Sean Payton coach a game that allows this quarterback to show the talent that you've told us that he has?
Paulie
How can you tell when a moment is too big for a player? When you're facing somebody, when you do.
Dan Patrick
Things that are uncharacteristics or your athleticism doesn't come out? Prime example, CJ Shroud. We've seen CJ Stroud complete every pass on the football field. But on was that Sunday, Saturday or Sunday, whenever the game was played, he was throwing balls in the dirt. Like he was throwing balls high in the dirt. He was trying to make heroic plays. That's when you know the moment is too big. That's when you know you're out of your comfort zone. It's no different than you, Dan. How could somebody tell when you're uncomfortable is because you would probably not be the seamless guy that you always are on the, on the radio and television. You would start up like you would start doing things that America doesn't normally see you do. It's the same way with a quarterback or any other player when you try to do things that you don't normally do.
Paulie
Your MVP is who Drake May, because.
Dan Patrick
I think he's done more with less. Matthew Stafford has puking the vonte Adams, Sean McVeigh. What does, what does Drake May have? Stefan Diggs coming off an ACL, Josh McDaniel, Keisha Booty. You know, those are the guys that he's got. And, and I think that, you know, when you look at the weapons and look at what they've done and look at the seed that they have, how could you not choose Drake May? Now Matthew Stafford's numbers are going to be better and they should be better. He's got a better receiving core, he's got a better team. I think you got to look at New England and say, man, what Drake May's done, man, like, like the kid is special in year two and I think the sky's the limit.
Paulie
Explain to me, I don't know. Let me ask you, who's your coach of the year? And then we'll. I'll have a follow up. Wow.
Dan Patrick
Mike Vrabel, because of the, the, the level of achievement relative to expectations, what did, what did they win? 14 games. 13 games. And I think most people would have said they were going to win three or four. So when you look at what they did relative to the expectations that we had, how could it not be? Mike Vrabel?
Paulie
Well, we talk about culture now, as a former player, like, what does that mean when we talk about the culture in the locker room?
Dan Patrick
It's the, your ability to make decisions based on where you are and the people around you that you work with and the environment that you're in. When it's the off season and I am hanging out with my buddies and, you know, we're deciding if we're going to gamble on the golf course, that's one culture. But when I walk into work, I know immediately, immediately when I walk into work, there's a certain way we do things, there's a certain way I carry myself. There's a certain level of decision making and decorum that I must have at my place of work based on my co workers and based on my place of employment and that's culture. And I'm going to do those things when nobody else is around. I'm going to do those things when nobody else is watching. I always tell my children I judge my level of parenting based on your level of decision making. Not just when people are around, but when nobody's looking. I have to be a good enough parent where you make great decision even when no one's watching. Now, it doesn't always work out that way, of course. Everybody's got kids that knows that. But I think you can get a level of the culture in your home, of the culture in your workplace based on the. On the decision making that your kids and your employees make. And here's the thing, Dan. Haven't you often heard of this? The best led teams are what player led teams. If the coach has to tell you everything to do, then the coach probably hadn't done a good enough job itself.
Paulie
I know you're proud LSU alumni.
Dan Patrick
Absolutely.
Paulie
Okay.
Dan Patrick
I love Lane Kiffin because I think Lane Kiffin is going to bring. I know exactly where you're going. Like I've been talking to you for years. I know exactly where you're going with this. Lane Kiffin was the perfect person for LSU at the time.
Paulie
Now, where do you think I'm going with this? Where do you think I'm going with this?
Dan Patrick
Okay, my idea was that you were going did I like the way it all went down of him coming from Ole missed lsu. Now, did I get that right or wrong? Okay, I'm sorry.
Paulie
Go ahead. Yeah, go ahead. It feels like this is the end of the SEC from the standpoint of everybody responding, overreacting, that the Big Ten has had three consecutive national champions and oh my gosh, they're spending money. And I saw where I think it was. Matthew Barry does college football for the mothership. It was like LSU is the. The final hope for. For the sec. Like what. What happened here that the SEC now hanging by a thread and oh my gosh, look at what the Big Ten has done. And what's the future of the sec?
Dan Patrick
I. I think we have recency, boss, and we always have and we always will. The Big Ten is won three in a row. Right now. The Big Ten is the. Is the preeminent college conference in college football because they've won three in a row and they've done it with three different teams. I think when you look at most people and Nick Saban said it best. This era of college football has been changed based on the nil and transfer portal and Saban Said it best. It's hard to get kids from down south to go up north unless you pay them. Well, guess what? We're paying them now. And I know he said that tongue in. I, I know he said that tongue in cheek. But there's some validity to it based on the conversation you and I've had. I'm a Southern board. I like. I, I enjoy going to New York to visit around the holidays and seeing the tree at Rockefeller center and all that good stuff, but bug like the south, baby. But I think because now, because Mark Cuban in Indiana, because Ellison, I think I have his name right, the big Michigan booster and all those guys. Like, because there's so much money in these Northeastern and clo. In schools around the country, you're getting players that normally set in Tuscaloosa or set in Athens or set in Baton Rouge and waited their turn. They're like, why would I wait and play two years when I can go play four years and make a million bucks? And so now the, the, the playing field has become leveled, so to speak. But all things are cyclical. But make no mistake about it, and I'm telling you and your cronies right now, the same thing. The best conference in America is still the sec. And if you don't believe me, just ask Greg Sankey.
Paulie
Oh, yeah. Oh, do you think Greg Sankey would go? No, Booger, it's the Big Ten. You, you know better. It just feels like, hey, there's. Now everybody can pay. And as I was told, you either have tech money or oil money. And, and some of these schools in the SEC do not have tech money and oil money. And these other program, Indiana, winning the national title would be like Vandy winning the national title.
Dan Patrick
And Vandy won, what, 10 games this year? So Vandy was close. Vandy was on the precipice.
Paulie
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
Because, you know, to your point, or which would I rather have, I'd rather have oil money, because oil money is pumping daily. It's coming out of the ground. So at some point, the tech industry goes up and down. We've seen that. Just go back and look at our stock market over the last 40 years. Tech goes up and down. You know what's not going up and down? That stuff that's coming out the ground.
Paulie
Because how many schools do you have in the sec, Oklahoma and Texas that are pumping?
Dan Patrick
Oklahoma, Texas, Texas A and M. Arkansas's got the, you know, got Walmart money. That's pretty good money. Last time I checked, they got four billionaires that are, you know, Own Walmart, Tyson Chicken. I mean, it's a. Here's the one thing that I've been amazed by. DP and, and, and, and maybe this doesn't amaze you because you're filthy rich. I have been amazed by the amount of money that people have in this country and people that got money you didn't even know about. Like, there are people at these schools that have billions with a B that you have never even heard of. And they've come out of the woodwork since NIL has become like the thing to be because they want to be. Like, they want to be known. They may not want the microphone, but they want people to know, hey, I'm helping school School X, and I can do it because I'm a billionaire with the beat.
Paulie
Yeah, I know they don't hold press conferences like Terry Pakula. They just said, all right, here you go, here's some money. Private.
Dan Patrick
Here's a question for you. Speaking of Terry Pula, here's a question for you, because I always have a question for you. If you're Keon Coleman and you just heard the owner in the GM basically said that we don't want you, how do you show back up to work in that building? Or do you, or do you ask for a trade? How do you think the whole Keon Coleman thing works out?
Paulie
Well, I would lay low for a little while, but I would realize my days are numbered. And I would say to, you know, eventually your gm, you know, can you find another location for me?
Dan Patrick
Interesting. Yeah, I think ultimately that's the way it's going to go. But I, I just feel bad.
Paulie
I felt bad for the kid, though. I agree with you. Like, like he caught strays. Like, what did he do? I mean, I mean, I know he didn't play. Like they thought he was going to play, but who drafted him? And then they can't even agree on who drafted or didn't draft him, who wanted him, who didn't. And he's probably going, wait a minute, why am I trending here?
Dan Patrick
But, but guess what? He's no different than any other player. Like most of the time in your first or second year, you're trying to figure it out. Like he's a young, snotty nose kid. He shows up late. Guess what? I showed up late my rookie year. He's made some mistakes, but you know what you do? You, you bet on the talent that you drafted, you coach him up, you give them three or four years and you see what kind of player develop you get. And I think he could develop into a really good player. The problem is right now, he's going to walk into that building if he ever does again, and have zero confidence.
Paulie
Yes, and I would, too, because everybody's going to be wondering the same thing. How did you feel when you heard ownership management talk about that? He is Booger McFarlane of the mothership. And you can catch him NFL Primetime, which can be seen on ESPN following the NFC Championship game, normally on ESPN plus, but you're on. You're on the Mothership Sunday night. Look at you. Big time.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, it's gonna. It's gonna be fun. I mean, every now and then they put me in Berman on tv, and you'll get a chance to see it, and maybe you agree with this or not. I think he's the greatest. And this is no offense to you. I think he's the greatest highlight reader I've ever seen. Now, there's a bunch of you guys that are good. You, Stuart Scott Van Pelt, Rich Eisen. I think Berman is the greatest ever. I don't know if you disagree or agree or where you think he ranks in there.
Paulie
I have no problem with that.
Dan Patrick
Okay.
Paulie
Yeah, no problem with that.
Dan Patrick
He's phenomenal. And it. For me, it's been really cool to kind of watch him and. And pick his brain and work with him, and I can't wait for Sunday night.
Paulie
Yeah, I'm glad that they brought him back. I actually went to management, I went to Jimmy Pitaro, and I said, you got to bring Chris back. And, you know, to Jimmy's credit, you know, he did bring him back, because I said, he is NFL Primetime. There's nobody else that should be doing that. He's got the energy to do it. And when we. I went back for the anniversary, I did talk to him, and I said it, you know, it mean the world. I didn't want Chris to disappear, and I thought he was disappearing and he meant too much to the place. He's the most important person who's ever walked in that building. And I said, name a building, have a statue, whatever. Just don't forget him. Him and Bob Lee, Tom Meese, never forget them. They might disappear from the, you know, the public eye, but I just didn't want that to happen to Chris because, in large part, I got my opportunity because I wanted to be there. I wanted to be in that environment, and Chris created that environment. Wow.
Dan Patrick
I'll definitely tell it. Make sure he knows that you said that, man.
Paulie
He.
Dan Patrick
He appreciates that stuff. Thank you, Booger.

Week on Point Game with me, CJ Toledano and Isaiah Thomas. It had a great take on Cade.
Paulie
Cunningham making his All Star debut as a starter. Take a listen.
Dan Patrick
He deserves it. He's arguably the best guard in the game right now. His team is one of the best teams in the game right now. So it's like it's well deserved.
Paulie
He earned that.
Dan Patrick
So shout out to him, man, I think with how good they're doing, they should get at least two in the All Star Game, though.
Paulie
Yeah. Who you think? Who else?
Dan Patrick
Who else, Big fella? Jalen, Duran, Durant. He's one of them. I think that's the next one. He's a big piece of what they got going on. So you gotta give love to Cade, man. He's doing what he does, man. I, I even watched the game last night where they played the Celtics, and he didn't really have a good game, but it's just his presence on the floor, like, he gets anywhere he wants. He's a big guard. They got nice size and he's strong and physical. So he's a tough cover, man. So shout out to him on his first time.

What's on your mind?
Dan Patrick
Hey, Dan.
Paulie
A couple things.
Dan Patrick
First of all, in all due respect.
Paulie
To Berman, you are the best. Well, thank you. But I know Chris Berman's contributions to sports TV cannot be overstated. Like, he, to me, created an environment at espn and, you know, it was contagious. I wanted to work there. And my first show, Chris did the 11 o' clock sports center, and he knew that I was going to make my debut, and he said, I'll stay. And he. He did the show with me, and I. I appreciated that and still do to this day. But thank you, Dave. But Chris Berman, he is and will always be espn. Yeah, Paulie, that first night when he told you that was it, all I know was a great moment at all.
Dan Patrick
Intimidating.
Paulie
Yeah, because he was so much louder than you realize when you're in the studio. It. It kind of echoed and it projected. And I even said on the air, I said, man, you're loud. Yes. Todd, I love when you tell the story about how you were following him around in his nickname he had for you for that newspaper in North Carolina, the Charlotte observer, because I was told. So I came over from cnn, and the person who hired me, John Walsh, said, hey, just observe for three months. Three months. And I would just go in there, and I would be there in the evening, and I'd be around, whether it was Chris or Tommy, Tim Brando, there were Kerry Ross, like, there were. There were people who were in there, and all I did is just watch. I only needed to watch probably for, you know, two or three days. But Chris would always come in and he'd see me, and he goes, it's the Charlotte Observer. And. And I just remember they were gambling on sporting events like it was. It was pretty wild in there. It was fun. And then the new boss who headed up SportsCenter, John Walsh, he cleaned that up. We're like, we're not. We're not going to be doing that. We'll still have fun. Ish. But we're going to be journalists. We're going to be breaking stories. And I was kind of seen as, okay, here comes golden boy. And I wanted to have as much fun as they were having. It was. I came from CNN, and our show was better than SportsCenter Sports Tonight with Nick Charles and Fred Hickman. It was better than what ESPN had, and John Walsh, the head of Sports center, knew that, and he wanted to incorporate more of that. He wanted reporting, breaking stories, good writing. He could still have fun. He didn't want us to have as much fun as Chris Berman was having. Because the line from management, ownership was, we don't want to have another Berman. And I'm thinking, oh, my God, you can't have enough talk about not getting it. Oh, they, they did not get it. It was all, it was so short sighted, myopic that they didn't realize there aren't many people in this business who have that kind of talent. And they, you know, we don't want another Chris Berman. I'm thinking, oh, my goodness. Yeah. Seaton. There was a real movement for a long time in radio, especially music radio, though, and I guess it would carry over to TV as well. That the personalities didn't matter. What mattered was the station. Yeah. And that the, the music is what was actually important. The personalities were interchangeable. Nobody cares about that. And I'm going to say that history has shown that not to be true. No. Because you can get the music anywhere. But can you get the personality to accompany the music? What makes you tune in every day and loyal to that station? It's not, you know, well, this is one of the five stations I listen to playing the exact same music. It's the personality that gets you coming back. All right, two hours in the books on this Thursday, the Washington Post has a reporter doing a story on the San Francisco 49ers and their injuries. Why? We'll tell you in 10 minutes. Also, we relive Kobe's 81 point performance. That'll be in about a half hour from now. Final hour, right after this.

Episode Title: Hour 2 – NFL Award Nominees, Booger McFarland
Date: January 22, 2026
Podcast: The Dan Patrick Show (iHeartPodcasts and Dan Patrick Podcast Network)
This episode dives into the fallout from the Buffalo Bills' firing of head coach Sean McDermott, ongoing NFL coaching vacancies, and the just-announced NFL Awards nominees. Dan and his crew dissect owner press conferences, the implications for coaching searches, and the emotional state of Josh Allen. ESPN analyst Booger McFarland joins for a wide-ranging interview on NFL coaching drama, team culture, award picks, and the state of college football amid NIL upheaval. The show balances insight and humor, echoing Dan's trademark conversational style.
(02:09 – 11:13)
Dan opens with the heavy scrutiny in Buffalo after the dismissal of Sean McDermott and the rare press conference access to Bills owner Terry Pegula.
Discussion centers around whether owners should take the podium post-major franchise decisions:
“Should owners speak at sports press conferences? ...I want an owner to speak, I think he should speak to a fan base.”
— Dan Patrick (03:20)
The show explores fan and media interpretations that Josh Allen's emotional press conference may indicate he felt responsible for McDermott’s firing.
Callers suggest possible head coaching replacements and debate if the Bills seek “a splashy hire” or simply the “right fit.”
Notable Quote:
“Maybe he was overcome with emotion because he knew if he plays like Josh Allen, they win that game and he didn’t.”
— Dan Patrick (07:35)
(11:13 – 17:02)
“How about an award for a guy who comes from nowhere to help his team, but not MVP worthy...like a bench guy who helps?” — Paulie (16:22)
Key Picks:
(23:47 – 41:19)
Sean McDermott’s Firing: Rooted in the failure to “get over the hump” with Josh Allen’s prime years, despite owner Pegula’s finger-pointing at the press conference.
“I think at the core, the reason he fired him was because he couldn’t get them over the hump.”
— Booger McFarland (25:00)
Best Head Coaching Vacancy:
“I would have said Buffalo. I think it’s Baltimore. I love Steve Bisciotti...you got Lamar Jackson...that culture, going to work at that place every day would be the best.”
— Booger McFarland (26:06)
Why Buffalo is a Tricky Job: Ownership/leadership’s lack of accountability, but the allure of coaching Josh Allen remains potent.
Pressure in Denver: Not just on backup QB Jarrett Stidham, but more so on coach Sean Payton to prove he can win with a backup, referencing his success with Teddy Bridgewater in New Orleans.
“Pressure is on Sean Payton...Can you coach a game that allows this quarterback to show the talent you told us he has?”
— Booger McFarland (28:11)
Recognizing When a Moment’s Too Big:
“When you do things that are uncharacteristic or your athleticism doesn’t come out...that’s when you know the moment is too big.”
— Booger McFarland (29:18)
MVP and Coach of the Year Picks:
NFL Culture and Leadership: Explains "culture" as players' ability to make good decisions, especially when no one is watching, and the importance of “player-led teams.”
“If the coach has to tell you everything to do, then the coach probably hadn’t done a good enough job itself.”
— Booger McFarland (32:56)
(33:00 – 37:25)
Booger addresses SEC’s shifting dominance amid shakeups from NIL and the transfer portal, and rising Big Ten power.
“Right now, the Big Ten is the preeminent college conference...but make no mistake, the best conference in America is still the SEC. And if you don’t believe me, just ask Greg Sankey.”
— Booger McFarland (35:37)
Discussion on the difference between “tech money” and “oil money” in fueling NIL collectives, and how Southern schools with deep pockets remain competitive.
(37:35 – 39:02)
Booger questions how a player like Keon Coleman can return to work after owners and GMs publicly disavow him.
“If you’re Keon Coleman and you just heard the owner and the GM basically said that we don’t want you, how do you show back up to work?”
— Booger McFarland (37:35)
Dan’s advice: lay low and quietly request a trade, noting the challenge to any young player’s confidence.
(39:28 – 47:07)
Dan and Booger praise Chris Berman as the “greatest highlight reader ever,” crediting him for creating the ESPN working environment that launched many careers.
“He is NFL Primetime. There’s nobody else that should be doing that.”
— Dan Patrick (40:08)
Anecdotes about Dan’s own early days at ESPN with Berman and the station’s evolution from “wild” to a more journalistic bent.

This hour offers an engaging snapshot of the NFL off-season’s intrigue—mixing analysis, humor, storytelling, and industry insight. Dan and crew chart the ripple effects of coaching turnover, quarterback pressure, and evolving league culture while Booger McFarland’s frank, folksy perspective adds heart and candor to the discussion. The episode is rich in both NFL history and fresh narratives, especially for fans interested in league politics, player development, and the under-the-hood workings of professional sports.
