It's a Dan Patrick show here on Fox Sports Radio. Brady Quinn, Jonas Knox in for DP and the guys. You can hear us weekday mornings before the Dan Patrick show alongside Lavar Arrington, 6:00am Eastern Time, 3:00 Pacific. But we are in for the guys here on the second to last day of 2024. And we are talking football. We are talking football. In fact, if you tuned in to hear some hot takes on the NBA, hour four is the place to be on this show for that hour four. We're going to dive into it.
Jonas Knox
I know this. There was a trade. There was a trade. The Lakers made a trade. They traded DeAndre Russell to the Nets.
Brady Quinn
Yeah.
Jonas Knox
For Finney Smith and someone.
Brady Quinn
Yeah, yeah. Finney Smith and like a bag of Funyuns, I believe. And, and that's gonna. Listen, that's gonna really be the difference in the NBA outcome this year, you know.
Jonas Knox
Well, I was gonna ask, like, does that do anything for either team?
Brady Quinn
Not really, but it depends on, you know, who you're shilling for. If you are a fanboy of the league and you need to push storylines out there, you're gonna go ahead and kind of push that one and say, oh, my go. Really going to impact things. It's not at all, but, you know, at least it's The Lakers, it's LeBron involved. It's a trade. And so that's some, some news for the NBA out there. So you just got to wait your turn. It's nothing against the NBA. You just got to wait your turn. Okay. This nickel and dime cup that you threw in the middle of the season that nobody cared about, including the team that won because they didn't even celebrate it, you got to wait your turn. You wait until after football season and then you will be addressed. Other than that, you got to wait in line. I don't have to tell you, by the way, your guys, the New York Giants, man, just can't get it right, can they?
Jonas Knox
Well, a good win yesterday.
Brady Quinn
Yeah, good win, good win. That knocked him out of the top spot in the NFL draft. Apparently. That's really, they really screwed things up there. You know that there are two different worlds in the National Football League when you got something some teams thinking about seeding and then other, other teams that are overloading NFL tankathon and the tankathon.com website who couldn't even take in people trying to look at the updated draft order because there were so many people that were trying to see whether or not their team was picking one overall. Right now that pick does belong to the New England Patriots with the Titans, Browns, Giants and Jaguars rounding out the top five there at Tankathon. So look, I, I, you know, I, I think this was maybe more of an indictment on the Indianapolis Colts defense who just got absolutely knifed by Drew Locke and company yesterday. But Giants fans don't seem thrilled about that, that maybe Shadore Sanders is not going to be theirs based on the result from yesterday. So.
Jonas Knox
Well, I, I would go as far as saying any team that's looking for a quarterback and New England's not a number one, so they're, they're a good trade partner or depending on who they, they view in the draft as being that number one, you could take your pick. But I would say, you know, maybe Travis Hunter is someone, they'd look at it taking number one overall given his versatility, even though I do think he's going to end up playing cornerback the majority of the time and then maybe situationally on offense, Tennessee, that could be a potential candidate for quarterback. You know, maybe they like Will Levis, maybe they don't based on how this year's gone. Cleveland, you've got the desean Watson contract to deal with. We'll see what happens this off season. There's plenty of time for something to happen before the draft or at least leading up to it. So they could be a potential suitor. And then you have the Giants of four, who I think it's no secret they're going to be looking for a quarterback. But all three of those teams between Tennessee, Cleveland and New York now become trade partners for the, for the New England Patriots, which their track record's always been. If they, if they could to trade back accumulate More picks build through the draft. That was more during the Bill Belichick era. Now with Elliott Wolf, I assume they'll do something similar given that that pick is equated to a king's ransom and probably even more so this year. I think this year because of the competition to get Shador Sanders as the first overall quarterback. Because in my opinion as of right now, now granted the college football season still going on, but I would rank the top three quarterbacks in this order, at least the ones that have already declared that they're going to be going pro. Shador Sanders is number one and I think there's a decent gap between him and the next two. I then put Cam Ward at number two and then I put Carson Beck at number three. And again these are based on the top three who have declared so far for the NFL draft. But those are essentially the three quarterbacks you're going to be looking at as of right now to draft if you're one of those teams. And because Shador has separated himself from the rest of the group, to me that that's going to warrant even more draft compensation from one of these teams that's going to be looking to move up with New England. Who's got Drake May, I don't think there's any concerns about him being your future guy, but for Tenness, Cleveland, the New York Giants, they're all in the mix and there's in my, in my opinion, going to be a bidding war, I think to get up to that number one spot if everything holds true. Still got some football left to be played.
Brady Quinn
Yeah, I think Tennessee would obviously go quarterback. Cleveland. The news over the weekend was DeSean Watson restructured his deal. He's a hell of a guy that Deshaun Watson, I got to tell you, like restructured his deal. So he's going to be back there with the Browns to try and make it a little bit more manageable for him. You know, like you talk about somebody that's like willing to like work with you after you give him $230 million guaranteed. Like he's like that, that's a stand up guy there in Cleveland. And then the, you know, the Giants are going to be looking at qb. I just, I do find it kind of funny because the Raider fans were doing this last week and now it's like, well, may as well just win out. Like if we're going to blow our chance at the number one pick, you know, may as well just beat New Orleans as well too, who's awful. But I do Find it funny how people actually think that coaches and players on the present team are worried about what the team next year and beyond looks like when they're playing for actual paychecks and jobs. I do kind of find that funny that people think that that's, you know, you've got to, you got to look out for the franchise. Okay. Because they're looking out for me. That's why I've got a one year deal. Okay.
Jonas Knox
This actually goes back and relates to the Cam Ward conversation where, you know, he was doing something in the first half of a bowl game that was self centered this time of the year. What do you think all these players are doing who are playing for the New York Giants given that they've been eliminated from the playoffs? It's all self serving. You are at this point in time, Drew Locke, who had an unbelievable performance, the best of his career, helping the Giants get their third win, however, knocking them out of the number one overall spot. Do you think he cares about where they draft next year? He's trying to. He's auditioning for every other team out there as well as his own for that matter. Whether that he can remain on in a backup role, whether he can go somewhere else and sign a deal to become, you know, a guy who can compete for a job. Maybe like that's what it's about, you know, Tyrone Tracy Jr. The running back, you know, Devin Singer. None of these guys care about the draft position, about who they're going to bring in to replace them potentially. Like they're doing everything they can to win football games. Brian Dable for that matter, just as he's a head coach, I think there's a thought that people are like, well, you know, if you get the quarterback of the future, a quarterback who, you know, Brian Dale would want to work with, is he to be there though, if they lose to India and they lose in week 18, I mean, those are all the questions that like, you don't want to have to have ownership or the front office answer like you'd rather win it as much as you can not make it look like you've lost the locker room. Because I would say if they lose this game based on how bad the Giants looked last week. Yeah, I mean, getting blown out the way they did, I think it might be hard for the Mara family. Despite the fact that they came out in defense of Brian Dable and supporting him when they got drummed by Atlanta a couple weeks ago and then even how they looked first, Baltimore was very uncompetitive. They haven't really played a competitive game since New Orleans back at the beginning of December. And if that's the case, and the ownership starts to feel like you're losing the locker room, and that's what it looks like at times, what it looks like, there's just not enough parity, you know, as far as on the field. Because the reality is most of these teams aren't that far apart. It's just there are some times where teams check out, players check out, and in this case, that was a huge win to stop any sort of momentum in that case. And if you win another one a week 18 versus Philly, you're kind of putting together at least a little better taste in your mouth heading into the offseason, despite the fact that Giants fans, maybe even some people in ownership in front office are upset and you aren't going to have as good of a draft position. But. But again, the head coach players, they don't care. Like, trust me, I've been in that position before. There's not one person who's talking about or cares about the draft position of that team. And they're doing everything they possibly can to try to win that game.
Brady Quinn
It's like when Lovey Smith and the Texans beat, I think it was the Colts that final week of the season, and everyone's like, oh, what are they doing? They blew their chances at the number one pick. Well, I mean, they ended up with CJ Stroud, so everything worked out fine, even though he's had a down year this year. But I just, like, I don't know what you want them to do. Like, how many more examples of this is a business do you need before you go? All right. They don't really give a rip. Like, and to your point on Brian Dabal, like, the mayors can say whatever they want. It was like it. They had gotten significantly worse after they came out and made those statements like it was getting bad. And so he wins yesterday. They look fantastic. Drew Locke probably had the game of his career. We were having the same discussion about Arthur Smith last year in Atlanta, and we talked about it on our show to where going into the final couple weeks of the season, I think Atlanta was still in contention for a playoff spot. And the thought was Arthur Smith was going to be back. And then they looked so bad. And then there was that altercation with Dennis Allen, week 18, which Jameis Winston maybe went rogue and handle the ball off and ran up the score. And next thing you know, Atlanta's looking for a new head coach. So, like the idea that they're just going to sit here and worry about the betterment of the franchise when, when they're looking out for themselves and they should be, I think is preposterous. Also, does this not make the case for the Falcons taking Michael Penck Jr. In this draft when their reasoning was we don't think we're going to be picking this high again and they trust that draft class of quarterbacks then, then maybe they would have been potentially up for this year. Doesn't that make the case for them? Because it feels like Atlanta made the right move upon further review.
Jonas Knox
Well, I mean it looks like they made the right move when you look at Kirk Cousins, his inability to come back from the Achilles injury like that in the first place, which was optimistic thinking to begin with. But I always ascribe to this there's two things that we're like entering into the season, in the off season of. And look at Green Bay. I mean, look at they do with Jordan Love. The, the. I would say the front office, you could say the ownership group there in Green Bay. They love Jordan Love. So they didn't wait to strike on that. I mean, they did the same thing with Aaron Rodgers, even though they had a Hall of Famer in Brett Favre, and obviously did the same thing with Jordan Love, even though they had a Hall of Famer in Aaron Rodgers. So there's an example to be said for that based on how an organization like that has had so much sustained success and consistency and so why other organizations don't try to draft the guy, especially even if they make the decision to bring in an older veteran to eventually have either as a backup option, a guy to push whoever that veteran is. I mean it did lead to a couple of MVPs for Aaron Rodgers and at least a couple of runs at the NFC Champions game. I mean it makes complete sense, but I think more than anything else is if you're in a position to take a guy to take a quarterback that you feel like is a difference maker and you love, you take them, you take them. You never know how that asset's going to play out in the future for you either with a starter that you currently have. I mean again, if you go back through the draft order and we were sitting here talking about the New York jets who are picking number six, and we could sit there and say, well, we don't know what's going to happen with Rogers. You know, could Rogers play another year? Sure. And would he be better than other quarterbacks in the league? Sure. But I think we'd all agree his best football is probably behind him. Maybe I'm wrong in that assessment. Maybe this year has a lot to do with the instability on the coaching staff. Maybe the roster is not where it quite needs to be. Maybe there's the issue of the injury too. You get another year removed away from the injury, even though he's another year older. Maybe you get a better, you know, a better player from that. But if they were to draft a guy, if, I don't know, they love Cam Ward and Cam Ward falls to them at number six if the draft order stays the way it looks right now, I sit there and look at and go, all right, like I have no issue with that. He's going to learn from one of the greatest to ever do it. And if something happens, either via through his play or an injury, like you've got your guy there now that you fall in love with now, are there other holes on the New York jets that you could probably address that would be a more appeasing to Aaron Rodgers? Yeah, I think the offensive line is probably one of them. We can, we can get into the record that Aaron Rodgers just broke, so we could talk about all these things. But the truth is, at this time of year, if you can go grab a guy that you love at the quarterback spot, you go take him. And despite, you know, Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs, the Buffalo Bills, which those guys aren't falling to them anyway, so it's a hypothetical that's like not even worth entertaining. But in some of these other spots, I mean, it doesn't matter who you're talking about. Like we know there's needs. I mean, clearly Las Vegas, they need a quarterback. If a guy falls in the probably taking them. But you'd have to look at some of these teams and go, yeah, like I, I can understand why they want to take a quarterback there if they love them only because of what they could mean in the future. But what they mean is an insurance policy. And now you have an Atlanta Falcons team that, yes, you know, the division's out of their hands a bit. They need Tampa to lose next week. But if they win and Tampa loses, obviously they're still very much, very much in the hunt to go to win the division, host a playoff game and it's gonna be Michael Pennix leading them. So you can make the case that has played off.
Brady Quinn
Let me ask you this, Brady Quinn, what do I gotta do? What do Pete Priscoe and I gotta do to get you on board with J.J. mcCarthy traded to the Raiders. What do we gotta do? Right? What do we got to do to get you?
Jonas Knox
Why are we so focused on that trade?
Brady Quinn
I just. Because we thought of it and because it was ours, it felt like a great idea, you know, like, it feels like Sam Darnold. Why would you let him walk? Like, bring him back. It's worked. The fit is good. And if the Raiders on the outside looking in and you got Raider fans that are bitching and moaning because their team blew their opportunity at Shador Sanders, J.J. mcCarthy, he's there, like, assuming he's going to be healthy. You got the Michigan connection. What do we got to get you to do to be on board with us? Because Lavar was not on board with us when we threw it out there last week.
Jonas Knox
Okay. The hard part about it is the Raiders had their opportunity to trade up to get JJ McCarthy if they wanted him. He was sitting right for them at 10. Yeah, it's what the jets, right, and Minnesota swapped.
Brady Quinn
Yeah.
Jonas Knox
I believe the swap picks and traded up. So they could have gotten him. They could have gotten Bo Nix. I mean, it. There was a number of players they could have taken. They chose not to. So I'm not sure why all of a sudden a year later, that makes sense now and just because of what Sam Darnold's done. And what's most likely going to happen is Darnold will get like a three year deal or maybe even a four year deal. So the numbers are going to look big, but it'll be basically be, you know, a year or two years of guarantees where, depending on how things look next year, Depending on how J.J. mcCarthy recovers, you know, that's going to largely dictate what's going to happen moving forward. But because the Vikings will have that fifth year option to pick up and play with, they can let this thing play out for a couple of years. They can go and do exactly what the Green Bay packers did with Jordan Love, and they can watch him grow, watch him develop, get used to the system, see how he recovers from the injury and go let Sam Darnold be their quarterback. I think that's the more likely scenario than JJ McCarthy getting traded at this point.
Brady Quinn
Damn. So we got work to do. All right, listen, the draft's a ways away. We'll. We'll get this figured out. All right, we're going to sell you on this idea at some point, Pete Briscoe and I. It is the Dan Patrick show here on Fox Sports Radio. Brady Quinn, Jonas Knox in for DP and the guys coming up next here though apparently the interviews have already started. It's the Dan Patrick show here on Fox Sports Radio. Brady Quinn, Jonas Knox with you here. I just saw your text. Well, coming up in about 20 minutes from now, we are.
Jonas Knox
Let's listen to this tease.
Brady Quinn
In about 20 minutes from now, we are going to try and get an apology out of Brady Quinn.
Jonas Knox
Oh, no.
Brady Quinn
Yeah. All right. He should be apologizing for something that he has started and, and he is now going to have to face the facts in about 20 minutes from now. Here that's fine.
Jonas Knox
That's fine. Can I pick a bone, though, with some of my friends who. I mean, look, they're true friends because your true friends show that they're friends by giving you crap. Like, you're pushing back. But there is an element that bothers me about sports betting. When people ask for betting advice and then they take it, and then. Yet they just blame you for when things don't work out.
Brady Quinn
Correct.
Jonas Knox
And on top of that, what's really annoying is, is when you give them betting advice, and let's say they go two and one, yet they're upset they didn't go three zero. And you're. And you're to blame for that. I'm like, like, what do we got to do here? And. And so I've got a couple of buddies who they like to, you know, ask for advice about different bets and so forth, and I've become the scapegoat. Like, I'm this. I'm the reason why they go 500 even though they didn't listen to me. One of the best. They went on five and three. But I become the scapegoat for all this. And it's a little bit frustrating, I'm gonna say. I know that comes along with the friendship, especially with dudes. Like, that's just. That's how it works. Like, you give each other crap for stuff. I'm like, don't ask for the opinion. Don't take the betting advice. Like, go ahead and fade me. Bet against me then if you. If you think I'm wrong. But I mean, I'm just saying that is one of my biggest gripes in regards to betting or giving any advice to your buddies or even friends, for that matter. I mean, nowadays it's like, I don't. I try to bite my tongue on almost anything unless they ask.
Brady Quinn
It's also, you never hear about, like, all the great picks you gave them. It's always the ones that went wrong. Oh, hey, nice call in that one game. All right, what about the other three that I gave you? Like. Like what? That's all I'm going to hear about is that one, like, you. If you are trusting somebody, first of all, nobody knows what the hell is going to happen, all right? That's why it's sports. That's why we love sports, because we have no idea what's going to happen. You can have an assumption. You can guess. But if, like, a ball bounce is one way or there's a bad interception or God forbid, there's an injury two minutes into a game, and it completely changes the outcome or landscape of a game. How the hell are you supposed to know that going into it? And that's why I always subscribe to the were you on the right side of it? And if I can go back after the result, even in a loss and say, you know what, I had that right. They just didn't cooperate, then I feel better about things. Right. That's. That's how I address those situations.
Jonas Knox
Well, I'm sure there's a lot of people who are watching the Green Bay, Minnesota game, and if you had the over under, we're probably hoping for a stop by the Minnesota Vikings defense, which has seemed gas by the end of that game. And it was inevitable that even though they're down by nine, so there is a world where if they get a stop, force McKick a field goal, then run the clock out, you're probably winning. If you hit the under, which may or may not have been some of us my buddies had. And yet somehow I'm taking the blame for the Vikings defense just becoming a sieve there at the end of that game and hitting the over.
Brady Quinn
Yeah, of course it's your fault. It's that. That is 100 your fault. Like, you, you are the guy that they're going to blame, and that's, that's the way this works.
Jonas Knox
Well, and full disclosure, I've been awful in NFL betting this year. Like, awful. As far as the advice we've given out on our show. Now, granted, I missed like two or three weeks of that, and that's. That's my fault. As I've said before, I'm not going to blame Lee, even though Lee did would text me and asking for picks at a very inopportune time. That being said, It's 100% my fault. And so I'm trailing both you and Lavar in a big way. But my college picks have been much better.
Brady Quinn
So, yeah. Now, one of the things that you and I were both in agreement on before the year, that, look, you got to own it, you got to be responsible and accountable for your, for bad decisions and bad calls that we make. But one of the things that you and I were in agreement on, opposite of Lavar on our show, was optimism about the New York jets going into the season. And, oh, boy, are they a rough team to watch. That game against Buffalo yesterday was brutal. They weren't competitive. It wasn't even. And it's not like Josh Allen was, like, lighting them up. It's not. Not like I Mean, yeah, conditions were rough. They looked terrible. And so Aaron Rodgers at one point, and he's sitting one touchdown shy of 500 for his career. He joins elite company if he can do it, potentially heading into his final season of his career. He was asked yesterday after the game about the jets taking him out late and putting in Tyrod Taylor, which actually did lead to an improved look on offense. Here was Rogers.
Jonas Knox
It was 33, nothing. We were sitting there and I said at some point, probably go Tyrod here, huh? And then the next play, they threw a screen for a touchdown. So it's 40 nothing.
Brady Quinn
Garrett Wilson, apparently not a fan of playing with Aaron Rodgers. Devonte Adams was dealing with a little bit of an injury going into the game. He got banged up in that game as well, too. I don't know. And then, by the way, the latest report, Ron Rivera is going to interview with the jets later this week. And then Rex Ryan, old, old foot fetish Rex, he was talking with Jake Asman on ESPN New York. By the way, Jake Aspen used to be an intern here at, at Fox Sports Radio, dude. And he was speaking with him and said that he expects to interview with the jets at some point soon. So, Rex Ryan, Ron Rivera. Wheels are in motion to change some things in New York. I don't know if Rogers is back, but there's the wheels in motion for you for the Jets. Jets. Jets. Jets.
Jonas Knox
It speaks to a couple of things. I mean, first, both former head coaches. So you want someone who knows how to handle the New York media market, who knows how to handle what you'd say is maybe an older veteran team, and maybe that foreshadows them wanting to keep Rodgers wanting to see this thing out for another year. I don't know. That's my initial thought on it. But again, guys, who in Rex Ryan's case has had success being the head coach, New York jets obviously have a relationship with Woody Johnson. And if, if Woody Johnson's ultimately making this decision on who he wants to bring in, in his mind, he's got an idea of what he wants the environment of his team or the culture of his team to be. And Ron Rivera, who's a former player from the times that I've been around him calling games and just talking to some of the players who've been there, like, you can tell, like there is a, a strong sense of accountability that he holds all of his players to, and he sees right through the BS because he was a player and he can speak to a lot of that. So I think there's elements of, you know, what Woody Johnson's looking for out of that next head coach. And just hearing, at least in the case of Ron Rivera, again, Rex Ryan's more save from his own standpoint. You know, he's, he's tired of working, working for the, the four letter network. He wants to, he wants to get back into coaching, have more fun doing that. And I don't blame them, but I'm just saying it sounds like maybe that's more of the direction they want to go and they don't want to have to cut their teeth on another guy a la Robert Sala, who is cutting his teeth as a first time head coach in that New York market, which again was tough. Although looking back on it, I'm sure they would have rather not fired Robert Sala just to see what would have happened this season that ultimately didn't do anything to help the New York jets this year. A team that both you and I thought would be a playoff team when it was all said and done.
Brady Quinn
By the way, since we're on the topic, did any team get better after firing their head coach this year besides the Saints?
Jonas Knox
Well, I think you could go through history in the NFL and probably most other places. How many teams do like, like get better? I'm not saying they don't maybe go 500, but how many teams ultimately like improve to a degree where you go, oh, that's a no brainer, like that guy's gotta be the head coach. It's hard to think of too many off the top of my head. Or you can say they, they go on an unprecedented run and end up, you know, end up being a team that you're saying, all right, that no brainer, that guy's the next head coach. He'll be there for a long time.
Brady Quinn
So Antonio Pierce. But you know, that seems like it's worn off the optimism for Antonio Pierce.
Jonas Knox
What was it, what was his record last year?
Brady Quinn
I want to say fight. Lee, can you fact check this? I want to say it was five and four. I think four and four was it.
Jonas Knox
No, know that was something else. I was looking, I was just playing career. Let's see, we went five and four.
Brady Quinn
Yeah.
Jonas Knox
So you got one win better than 500.
Brady Quinn
Yeah. And, and so there was this groundswell of support for him because I think they were just so relieved to move on from Josh McDaniels in the locker room that it was like, oh, we gotta keep my. Also think that that was because there was some regret that they moved on from Rich Passacci. After the Gruden firing, and then, you know, they went to a playoff game with Passaccia. But, yeah, other than that, it doesn't seem like it actually helps all that much. Like, I hope Darren Rizzy keeps the gig in New Orleans. I know you're a big of Darren Rizzy because he will light anybody up on a moment's notice, but he's the best.
Jonas Knox
I love him. Here's what the NFL needs to do. We need to stop worrying about, could we just hire the best guy? Can we hire the guy who we feel like can actually lead a team and. And stop worrying about, like, other stuff, like everything else other than coaching the team of football? Because, unfortunately, there's a lot of that, I think, that goes along in the hiring process. And football is the ultimate meritocracy. I don't know why we can't just look out there and say, like, who's the best candidate to come in here, coach my team, help us win football games? I mean, I would have said Bill Belichick, but he's the head coach in North Carolina. Maybe, maybe that could change in the next six months, given his buyout goes down to, like, a million bucks, whatever it is. But I don't think anyone's going to wait that long to hire a head coach.
Various Announcers
But.
Jonas Knox
But the reality is maybe he's a year away from wanting to come back into coaching. We saw Pete Carroll. He wants to get back into coaching. I believe he's a little bit older than Bill Belichick. So it's all out there. I mean, you've got perfectly qualified candidates. Mike Vrabel, obviously has been a hot name, but you don't have to look that far. I mean, you mentioned Brian Flores earlier. Brian Flores actually has a pretty good track record outside of the lawsuit that was drummed up against the Miami Dolphins and maybe some other, you know, NFL teams. You know, he's. He was a hell of a head coach in the sense of wins and losses. Now, he didn't handle too well. And that would be my biggest concern for any team that would be interviewing Brian Flores is, hey, man, what have you learned? Like, you're the defensive coordinator. What have you seen what Kevin O'Connell has done with Sam Darnold, you know, this past year, taking a guy who a lot of people have written off and you're making into what a guy who should be in the MVP conversation? I mean, look at his pass rating. Look at their record. Look at the touchdowns. Look at what he's thrown for. Like, Sam Darnold doesn't get enough conversation for at least being in the conversation about the mvp. But that would be like one of my first questions. But outside of that, like, he's a damn good football coach.
Brady Quinn
That's why I do wonder. Cause I know we had this discussion last week where you thought the more prudent decision in Chicago if they're going to bring in a coach would be go offensive. So that way you're not having to keep re replacing your coordinator. But I can't help but wonder if, you know, they're not looking at the whole thing and going, we need somebody to fix whatever's going on here from a big picture standpoint. And I wonder if Mike Vrabel will get that shot with the Bears. Cause that, that feels like somebody with experience, somebody who's been in the situation before, somebody who's been around. Great coaches, did a good job in Tennessee. That's why I wonder if that would be the one. And one of the names that was talked about coming along with him as offensive coordinator was potentially Tommy Reese, who he's been working with in Cleveland. So I wonder if that's the direction the Bears go. But knowing that thought probably screw it.
Jonas Knox
Up, isn't there a thought to Josh McDaniels might come along? There might be. Sort of.
Brady Quinn
There was there was that name also thrown out.
Jonas Knox
Well, and here's maybe why, and this isn't a knock on Josh McDaniels, but he's had two shots at it. And typically when you get two shots at it, you're not getting a third. I mean, most, most head coaches in the NFL don't get a second shot. And it's one of the reasons why if I was Mike Vrabel or Brian Flores, in this case, anyone who we've talked about, I mean, I think Rex Ryan, if he end up getting the jets job, like he knows what he's getting into, he's already been there. But for most of these head coaches, when you're looking for that next opportunity, it probably will be your last. At least the stats would say that. So if that's the case, like, I want all the power, I want all the control. If I'm going down, if this ship is going down, I want it to be because of every decision that I made. I don't want anyone, interview, intervening in my decision making process as to who I hire, who I draft, what my roster looks like, how much we're spending in free agency, who we're going after, what decisions we're making in that Regard who we're cutting, who we're moving on from. I want all the power. And that's the problem with a team like the Chicago Bears. That might even be a problem with a team like the New York Jets. I mean when you start to hear all the reports that are coming out, I mean we're basing decision making off Madden ratings. Does that seem attractive to you? If you're Mike Vrabel, a guy who like is a no BS like just call it how it is straight to the point type guy. You think he wants the owner to walk in and be like I think you should think about drafting so and so he's got a great mat. I mean how's that going to go over? So again we could talk about some of the top candidates but I think some of the top candidates might be saying themselves. I'd rather rate for the right next opportunity because it could be my last than any opportunity just because it's out there for me.
Brady Quinn
That's why when Rex Ryan threw his name in the hat for the jets job like we were talking about on the show, like yeah why not? Like if he know like all the, the Madden ratings, all of the chaos that goes on there, if he knows that and is willingly ready to walk into that diaper fire and be like no, no I'd like another shot at this. Like I would like to be a part. Why wouldn't you just give him the job? Like why not? Okay, like he knows all the dysfunction. He knows that, that Jack and Brick, the sons of Woody Johnson are going to be, are going to be involved in some of the, the player evaluation based on you know, who, who performed well when they had a controller in their hand. Like why, like why not Rex Ryan? Like he had, he had a pretty decent run there. I don't know if Rogers could at this point I'm starting to be more and more convinced that we're going, we're upon entering upon the final game of Aaron Rodgers. If he gets that 500 touch touchdown pass next week and it's to Devonte Adams I could see him sort of with a big picture, big view. Look at his career being like that's the perfect way to, to end my career.
Jonas Knox
And just so a couple thoughts on that. As a competitor it would be hard to imagine going out like this and I would at least want to come back and take one more shot at it. Now the issue is you'd obviously would have to take into consideration the division should only get better. Like Drake May is only going to get better. They should only help him out with how they build around him in New England. Miami, you'd assume, is going to have TUA for a larger portion of the season. Even if, even though they won this past week with Tyler Huntley and he, they may have to play with him this week, you still look around the division, it's going to be better than what it was this year. And not that he cares about that, but, but I think if you're Aaron Rodgers and you're looking at this, it's like there's no way the competitor in him wants to turn it down now, now. And look, maybe he talks to Devonte Adams, he has a conversation with him. We have no idea how Woody Johnson feels about Aaron. Although based on all the reports, they're probably not as big of a fan. I mean, if you could Lee, go check the matting ratings, maybe that'll play some sort of impact too on the offseason decision. But I, I look at it and just say to myself as a competitor, one of the all time greats, I ain't going out like this. Like that's, that's where I think that is. And so whether it's with the jets or somewhere else, and I do wonder if the jets, because they haven't started the interview process yet, they are going to interview Ron Rivera this week according to reports. Do they want to get the word out about what they're going to do with Rogers beforehand or do they want to keep it in house and wait and see what a guy like Ron Rivera sees or Rex Ryan sees? Because maybe that's part of the attraction. It's like, I know what I'm getting into with Aaron Rodgers. I know what he is off the field. There's a, there's a show out there called Enigma. If you don't, you just watch it. So you've got a pretty good sense of who he is off the field. And obviously he's a first ballot hall of Famer. When his name comes up for that, he's in like, there's no question about it. He's one of the most talented to ever play the game. And, and maybe that's more or less risky, taking an opportunity like that with him for one more year, maybe a draft a guy to sit behind him for a year like we talked about earlier. But I, I would, I would think that from a head coaching candidate standpoint, I would rather know what I'm going in there with at quarterback than not. And I would probably tell Woody Johnson that even if he's frustrated with Rogers or wants to move on. I. I would say to him, like, this gives you the best chance to win in year one. And. And look, if it doesn't work, we can cut bait, get the young guy in there, and we'll transition pretty much like the Atlanta Falcons did this year with Michael Penix Jr. And Kirk Cousins.
Brady Quinn
I mean, as somebody who was featured in that documentary on Netflix starring Aaron Rodgers Featured in Episode 3, I just. I support whatever Aaron Rodgers decides to do. You know, as somebody who was featured in that Netflix documentary. Lee, do you have Rogers Madden ratings by any chance? I do, in fact have his Madden ratings. His Madden rating overall is 77, which is tied with Kirk Cousins. He's right behind Russell Wilson, who's at 78. He's just above Bo Nix. Derek Carr and Caleb Williams are at 76. Okay. His awareness, which I know they're. They're into in the jets organization, is at 68, which is very low, just above Kyler Murray. Hold on a second. That doesn't even make any sense. Like, he seems like a really aware guy. Like, he's aware.
Jonas Knox
That's one of his strengths, man.
Brady Quinn
Yeah. Like, I totally disagree. So tell. Tell Brick or Jack or whoever is responsible for the awareness portion of his evaluation to. To rethink that. That. Because that's not. Not. That's not a good way to go, he said.
Jonas Knox
Yeah, I would say he's really in touch with himself.
Brady Quinn
Yeah, definitely. All right. It is the Dan Patrick show here on Fox Sports Radio. Brady Quinn being serious.
Jonas Knox
I mean, isn't that part of awareness myself? Like, what are we talking about? How are we defining awareness? Is it like pocket awareness? What do we mean here?
Brady Quinn
Yeah. What is Deshawn Watson's awareness? Since we're on the topic here, do you have that? It's got to be off the charts. Oh, wow.
Jonas Knox
60.
Various Announcers
Yeah.
Brady Quinn
That's the lowest I see for quarterback.
Jonas Knox
Where would you rank as far as your awareness, huh?
Brady Quinn
Well, it depends. Depends what day of the week we're talking about. What are they serving?
Jonas Knox
Today's Monday, Lee.
Brady Quinn

And then you took that opportunity. You wiped your, you know what with it, and now you just continue to pour on the insults. And then you got Lee back there nodding his head. Lee, what are you talking about? Lee, you're, you're asleep during the Saturday show. Anyways, what do you know about it? That's very true, but I, I, I, I see what you put out there and no, it's always bad. It was three and, oh, this week.

Podcast Summary: The Dan Patrick Show – Hour 2: NFL Tankathon Release Date: December 30, 2024
In the much-anticipated second hour of The Dan Patrick Show, hosts Brady Quinn and Jonas Knox dive deep into the intricacies of the NFL, focusing on strategic team moves, draft predictions, and the ever-evolving landscape of football management. This episode, aptly titled "NFL Tankathon," offers listeners an engaging blend of expert analysis, spirited debates, and humorous banter, all while shedding light on the pivotal moments shaping the upcoming NFL season.
The episode kicks off with a discussion about a significant trade in the NBA, where the Lakers traded DeAndre Russell to the Nets for Finney Smith and other assets. Although primarily an NBA topic, Quinn and Knox draw parallels to NFL trades, emphasizing how high-profile moves can influence league dynamics.
Notable Quote:
Brady Quinn [04:26]: "Finney Smith and like a bag of Funyuns, I believe. And that's gonna really be the difference in the NBA outcome this year."
Transitioning to football, the hosts shift focus to the NFL draft order, highlighting the New England Patriots securing the top pick, followed by the Titans, Browns, Giants, and Jaguars.
Quinn and Knox delve into the strategies teams might employ during the NFL draft, particularly focusing on quarterback selections. They discuss potential suitors for the Patriots' number one pick, suggesting players like Shador Sanders, Cam Ward, and Carson Beck as top prospects.
Notable Quotes:
Brady Quinn [07:00]: "Shador Sanders is number one, and I think there's a decent gap between him and the next two."
Jonas Knox [09:03]: "Tennessee would obviously go quarterback. Cleveland with DeSean Watson restructured his deal... the Giants are going to be looking at QB."
The conversation highlights the competitive nature of the draft, with Quinn asserting that a bidding war is likely for top quarterbacks, especially with Shador Sanders emerging as a standout talent.
The hosts evaluate the performances of various NFL teams, particularly focusing on the New York Giants' recent games. They critique the team's defensive shortcomings and quarterback performance, speculating on the Giants' draft position and future prospects.
Notable Quotes:
Brady Quinn [15:00]: "The Giants fans don't seem thrilled about that, that maybe Shado Sanders is not going to be theirs..."
Jonas Knox [18:00]: "The Colts defense got absolutely knifed by Drew Locke and company yesterday."
They also touch upon the Tennessee Titans' quarterback situation, praising DeSean Watson's restructured deal with the Browns and its implications for the team's future.
A significant portion of the discussion centers around potential coaching changes within the NFL, with a spotlight on the New York Jets. Quinn and Knox speculate on the Jets' interest in hiring Rex Ryan or Ron Rivera as their next head coach, analyzing how each candidate's coaching philosophy and past performance could influence the team's trajectory.
Notable Quotes:
Brady Quinn [30:14]: "Ron Rivera is going to interview with the Jets later this week... Rex Ryan expects to interview with the Jets..."
Jonas Knox [33:16]: "Brian Flores actually has a pretty good track record... he's a damn good football coach."
They debate the merits of each candidate, considering factors like media handling, accountability, and the ability to foster a winning culture within the team.
The conversation shifts to Aaron Rodgers' future with the New York Jets. Quinn and Knox discuss the possibility of Rodgers retiring or continuing his career, analyzing his performance metrics, such as Madden ratings, and his relationship with team management.
