Pacific it's only natural you see these golfers mistaken the true green lawns for an actual golf course. Have you noticed that?
Co-host or Guest (possibly Paul)
Come on.
Dan Patrick
No, no, I'm serious. They're the official lawn care treatment provider, the PGA Tour, so they know what it takes to get golf quality lawns.

So you're saying we could host a tournament out back?
Dan Patrick
Yeah, I guess we can. Get your own golf course quality lawn@trugreen.com trugreen.com let the pros handle the lawn. Just don't be surprised when golfers show up.

All right guys, two words for you. Prostate exam. Yeah, you just clenched up a little bit. Are you imagining the finger right now? Yeah. Relax. Prostate cancer screening starts with a simple finger free blood test. Around one in eight men in the United States will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime. But that's no reason to re clench when caught early at localized or even regional stages probably prostate cancer can have over a 99% five year relative survival rate. Did your tight end just relax? Good. If you're over 40, 40 or older and have a prostate visit, relax. It's a blood test.com you'll find out if a PSA blood test is right for you. The PSA blood test can be the first step in screening. Talk to your doctor to evaluate your risk, determine when to get tested and and discuss screening options and the next steps. Our stat of the day is always brought to you by Panini America. The official trading cards of the Dan Patrick Show. Good morning those watching the program on Peacock NBC Sports Network. Prairie View versus Lehigh Tonight, Miami, Ohio in a must win situation, it feels like against SMU Howard over UMBC last night in Texas over NC State. Looks like we have a verbal agreement maybe with the wnba. Nothing paper wise, but they're pretty close to getting this season finally started a little bit late. Venezuela over the United States 3, 2. And in case you don't follow this closely, or maybe you just started following this closely, the WBC doesn't come back until 2030 and there'll be a lot of conversation, a lot of dialogue about hey, why don't we attach this to the All Star weekend. I get it. But keep in mind this is until 2030. You still have the Olympics in there and the momentum that you have now is maybe just a springboard for the upcoming season. That's the way I'm looking at it because I don't know if Bryce Harper is going to be around in four years for his 19th year in the bigs. You know, certain players who's going to be around in four more years, you like the rivalries. But it really started, you know, because I'd watched the wbc. I went to the WBC when it first started, but it kind of became bigger, kind of it's coming out party was when Shohei Ohtani struck out Bryce or Mike Trout in 2023. That was it. I mean that's, that's where it was like, okay, you got to see two of the best players and here's Ohtani pitching against Mike Trout and striking him out but it was fun last night. I enjoyed, you know, most of this. I, it didn't matter who was playing. I felt like I was tuned in because I, I saw players, certainly with the other countries who really, really cared. And maybe it's not fair to label the United States as did they really care or non caring. I just know they didn't care or show they cared as much as some of these other countries. And you saw that with Venezuela. This was more than just winning the wbc. Far more than that. All righty. Poll question from hour one, Seton. And what are we going with in hour two?
Co-host or Contributor (possibly Seaton)
Yeah, we got up right now. Hour one, we have should the World Baseball Classic stay in the preseason or move to the All Star break? Okay, right now I'm calling up. Let me dial up these results quickly.
Dan Patrick
Thank you.
Co-host or Contributor (possibly Seaton)
Thank you. Right now, people have it staying in the preseason, but it's close. It's about a 64 for.
Dan Patrick
I'm fine with it staying in spring training. I don't want my players like it. It is an All Star break. And if you go to the All Star Game and it feels like it's a relaxing period, the All Star Game's not really competitive. I mean, they, they have some fun. But I got to worry about my players for the rest of the season. You know, I don't want to have you gear up for something, you know, really important in July and something happened to you. If something happened in, in spring training at the wbc, there's still time that I, I don't mortgage my season with a player or players who would get injured. I'm okay with spring training. All right, we'll get to more phone calls coming up. 877-3DP show a couple of things. Max Crosby has a podcast and it's called the Rush with Max Crosby. And he started talking about what happened in Baltimore. I thought it was fascinating because you're thinking we're trading two first round picks. We're getting Max Crosby, we're going to be a Super bowl contender. All of a sudden, Max Crosby brings his family, they come into town, and all of a sudden they don't roll out the red carpet. They didn't roll out any carpet.
Caller or Listener
They didn't.
Dan Patrick
And Max Crosby said something was off in the building. He waited, he was waiting to meet with, you know, Jesse Minter, the new head coach. He, they said, go back to the hotel. He took his physical. So he said, like, what was, what was going on here? Here is Max Crosby on the Ravens concerns over his knee surgery.
Max Crosby
Go into the room. They sit me down on the couch. And he's like, man, I don't know how to say this, but, you know, one of our doctors has concerns with, you know, with the results and whatever. Like, with your knee. Like, some of them have, you know, are concerned about the future and da,
Dan Patrick
da, da, da, da.
Max Crosby
And, you know, we really want you, and this is what it is, but, you know, we're just gonna have to get more and more opinions. At the first thought in my head, like, I was terrified, because I'm thinking in my head, like, what the. Like, I just had, like, Neil's. Neil Elatrosh. Best surgeon in the country. Like, the best of the best. He's done all my surgeries for the most part. Like, I haven't even got to talk to him or I hadn't got to talk to C.J. at that point. So it just kind of hit me. I'm like, what the. Is there something wrong? Like, I'm freaking out. Like, low key, deep down. I'm like, I can't get another surgery. I can't, like, my time on me. This is up. So I'm like, what is going on, bro?
Dan Patrick
So then Max decides he's going to call his surgeon after his physical.
Max Crosby
They tell me, like, yeah, we're going to get back to you. Like, we're going to get some more opinions and things. Like, we obviously want you this, this, and that. And I'm like, all right, all right. Like, okay, so we'll see. So I don't know. So then I leave. I'm like, this is what the. I get back to the hotel, bro. I'm like, what the going on? Like, what. What does this mean? Like, I'm calling whatever. Then I talk to Neil. Neil calls me, and he called me way down. He's like, max, don't listen to any of that. He's like, your knee is great. You're exactly where you're supposed to be. Or even ahead of schedule. He's like, you're doing everything right. He's like, they know you had your surgery nine weeks ago. It's obviously if you get an mri. Like, he's, like, showing me literally, like, the actual literature of, like, this is where knee is supposed to be at from a meniscus repair. Like, there can be MRIs. It could be misleading because it's still fresh in surgery and this and this and that. He's like, listen, you're doing everything right. Everything's going well. We're going to keep sticking to the plane. He's like, you will be back by training camp. That has been the timeline since the beginning. That hasn't changed.
Dan Patrick
Okay. I think the Ravens got cold feet. I think that it was, you know, when you put a bid in on a house and they accept the bid and then it pending, you know, inspection and then all of a sudden you go, I don't know, do we want to buy this house? I think, I think we're going to spend too much. Yeah. You know, maybe we find something in the inspection. And that's what it felt like. You're giving up two first round picks for Max Crosby. I don't know what you thought that knee was supposed to look like nine weeks after surgery. And that's where it felt like they, they wanted to come up with a reason. Now this is just my thought that it felt like, you know, on second thought, we don't want to give up these first round draft picks. How about we get Trey Hendrickson, we don't have to trade for him and we can sign him to similar money and we're going to get somebody who's kind of Max Crosby. Ish, not as good. But we need an excuse and we got an excuse. And that is we don't think the knee can hold up long term. So you can say that, you know, you can be vague. NFL's not doing anything. NFLPA is not doing anything. It's your opinion, it's your doctor. And. But it felt like it was by remorse and I felt bad for Max Crosby because here he is saying goodbye to the Raiders. You, you're going to Baltimore. You get there. And he's kind of trying to figure out, wait a minute, is this how they greet their players? Here's Max talking about flying to Baltimore.
Max Crosby
So then I get there, I get to the hotel. Well, no, this is the other part. They picked me up, they flew me to D.C. oh, because there wasn't many flights they flew. It's like we flew first class. They picked, they flew me to D.C. because I was only straight through. We had to drive two hours from D.C. all the way to Baltimore after the five hour flight, bro, that was, that's weak.
Nick Wright
I'm like, damn it.
Dan Patrick
You know what I mean?
Max Crosby
Like, you're sitting on a plane all day. You're like, I just want to go and lay down for a second, get catch my thoughts, bro. Two hours in the car. I'm like, this is crazy.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, but if Baltimore decided they were going to keep him, he would have been okay with that. It's now looking back it's like, you know, you can't get a private plane for Max Crosby after having knee surgery nine weeks ago. The knee that you're really concerned about, I'm surprised they didn't put him in. Coach. Coach. Yes, he.
Co-host or Contributor (possibly Seaton)
That's got to be one of those things. If you're Max Crosby and you're on your way, you're like, all right, I'm excited. This is going to be fun. Am I going to have to do this all the time? Like this drive is cool one time,
Dan Patrick
I guess, but am I going to
Co-host or Contributor (possibly Seaton)
have to do this every time I travel for this team?
Dan Patrick
Yeah, it's fires remorse, that's all this is. In my opinion. They realized, hey, let's make a smarter Now. I agree with what they did that you don't give up those first round picks. And you can bring in Trey Hendrickson. I don't know how health he's been injury prone as well last couple of years. But I guess Max Crosby is going to be a Raider at least. At least for now. Yeah, Paul, he shows up at the
Paul
airport in D.C. and there's a guy standing there m. Crosby on the little sign. Are you him? Yeah, I'm the guy with 19 tats.
Dan Patrick
Yeah. Yeah. All right, a couple of phone calls in here. Carrie in Minnesota. Hi, Kerry, what's on your mind today? Hey, Carrie, Gary Curtis in Illinois. Curtis, what's on your mind today?
Caller or Listener
Morning, D.P.
Dan Patrick
good morning.
Caller or Listener
You guys were talking about like the dead cap money that Miami has this year at like 75, which seems to blow out every other team's dead cap throughout history. So I guess my question is if your salary caps 300, could the NFL impose a minimum salary for your active roster? Because the only thing I found was that you have to spend 90% of your salary over a four year span. But dead money gets included in that. Because if you're the Dolphins, why sign Malik Willis to this money if you're still paying to a and then you can't field a competitive team?
Dan Patrick
Yeah, I don't know about that. The language there. I did talk to somebody last night because J.C. treader is going to be the head of the NFL Players Association. And I was asking a source, I said, what does this mean? He said, well, keep this in mind. The NFL was going to fast track an 18 game schedule for this upcoming season. Now this was, this was with they the previous head of the NFL Players Association. And then you had that mess and then you know, going to strip clubs and you know, so then the NFL PA has Got to earn the trust back. And it felt like had things stayed in place, who was the previous head of the NFL Players Association. But if, if he had stayed in that job, from what we learned last night, that they were, they were probably going to be on pace to fast track, 18 games. So this is the guy after Demore Smith, the guy who went to the strip club and you know. Well, anyway, the, the person, Lloyd Howell. There you go. Lloyd Howell was in that position and then he was shown the door. But he was probably, from what I'm told, the NFL would probably be looking at an 18 game schedule this upcoming season had he stayed in office working with the NFL. But now with JC Treader taking over and yeah, he's got a tough job here, got to earn the trust back with the NFL players and then, you know, you're going to have that TV contract coming up here with the NFL as well. But 18 games right now, you know, the commissioners said. Well, haven't even talked about it. Well, they have. Of course they have. But I think they probably would be looking at 18 games had the previous guy been able to keep that job working with the NFL. All right, let's see Russell in Philly. Then. We'll take a break. Nick Wright will join us. Hi, Russ.
Caller or Listener
Hey, what's up, Dan?
Dan Patrick
Hey, man.
Caller or Listener
Six, one two, one seven. First and foremost, I'd like to congratulate Howard University. Their first ever win in the NCAA tournament. Congratulations to the Bison. Second of all, a little disappointed in the U.S. it felt like we were playing in Venezuela. Geez, it was. It was so loud down there with the Venezuelans. I felt sorry for the guys. And lastly, no one ever talks about Jameis Winston is down there in Miami. Will that be a competition with him and the other gentleman or will they just give it to Willis? I'll hang up and listen. Have a good day, guys.
Dan Patrick
All right. Thank you. Rush. I didn't know Jameis Winston was in Miami. Yeah, Seaton.
Co-host or Contributor (possibly Seaton)
And if it is a competition, a quarterback competition between those two guys, everybody needs to be fired. You can't bring in Malik Willis, spend a bunch of money and be like, but I don't know, I kind of like James. You then fire everybody?
Dan Patrick
Yeah. This is different than Kyler Murray going to Minnesota for a competition with J.J. mcCarthy.
Nick Wright
Right.
Co-host or Contributor (possibly Seaton)
You know, we still got Jamis. Then fire everybody.
Dan Patrick
If you had Jameis and you're comfortable with James, then don't bring in Malik Willis.
Co-host or Contributor (possibly Seaton)
You bring it.
Dan Patrick
In fact, it makes more sense to keep Jamis there for the next two years than bring in Malik Willis.
Paul
Yes, Paul, I have Jamis Winston still as a New York Giant. As of his contract, I don't see any changes.
Dan Patrick
As of his what?
Paul
As his current contract.
Dan Patrick
Okay. All right. I don't know where the caller got the information there. If Jamis is in Miami. Wait, is he just in Miami visiting or living there? Nothing to do with him actually playing for the Dolphins? I will take a break. More phone calls coming up. We're back after this in the Dan Patrick Show. I saw where Matt Leinert, former USC great Heisman Trophy winner, I guess somebody, maybe a recruiting coordinator at usc, asked if he would allow them to unretire his jersey number 11 at USC. And he said no. And why do we retire a jersey? Can we, can we honor a jersey? Do we have to retire? You know, the Yankees have retired 22 numbers, including one through 10. Now I don't know if Matt Leinert will unretire. You know, as he said, hey, I'm going to unretire my jersey and get, well, you know what, Marvin, play that and then we'll get to Nick Wright. So here is Matt Leinert being asked to unretire his jersey at usc.
Nick Wright
When I was at usc, I got my number retired.
Dan Patrick
There's been multiple times where people at
Paul
USC have asked me if I would
Nick Wright
unretire my jersey for some five star prospect.
Paul
And do you want to know what
Nick Wright
I told those guys straight up? Absolutely not.
Dan Patrick
I am never going to unretire my
Nick Wright
jersey for some random dude who by
Paul
the way now could wear number 11
Nick Wright
and transfer after a year. The only person that will ever wear my USC number 11 would be Cole.
Dan Patrick
Okay. Cole being his son, we apologize for that. That slipped by the goalie there.
Paul
Yes, Paul, which bothers you if anything, Matt Leiner saying no, or Matt Leinert
Dan Patrick
being asked a recruit saying, hey, I want that jersey number. Yeah. As Leonard said, hey, somebody may come in, they might be here for a year. I'm going to un retire my jersey number. And if you win a Heisman at usc, I think you get your jersey retired. But we can honor like the Cowboys, don't they honor numbers? They don't retire them. Yes, Todd, but Matt and no one else that's in that situation should be asked directly and being put on the spot. And I have absolutely no problem with him saying no. That was, it was retired. That's the number no one gets to wear you. And it's multiple times that he was asked. Yes.
Nick Wright
Yeah.
Co-host or Contributor (possibly Seaton)
You know, I don't know that I've ever really thought about the concept of retiring numbers as not being a good idea. But that, you know, like a ring of honor is. Makes way more sense than retiring number.
Dan Patrick
Let's bring In Nick Wright, host of First Things first on Fox Sports 1 and what's right with Nick Wright. You can find it on YouTube, wherever. Get your podcast
Nick Wright
to me again, please.
Dan Patrick
What now?
Nick Wright
Because I'm sitting here listening, okay. To just a chorus of bad takes and my mic's not on and I can't fix any of it. Like I don't know what they. Every take I heard there was was bad. The first of all, retiring jerseys is awesome. And you're like, oh the Yankees, they've retired 22 numbers. Well luckily we're not running out of numbers. Luckily we got plenty more to come so we're fine. That's first of all. Second of all, it's not the recruit's fault for asking the recruit that wasn't born when Matt Leiner was playing for usc. He doesn't know every school that's recruiting him the list of retired numbers. It is the school's fault for then asking Leiner. Like you can't put it on it because I remember something happened with Steve Largent Seahawks number and they went and asked his family no, if you make it should. There should be gravity to retiring a number. And then you can't then retroactive like didn't happen Lawrence Taylor and Abdul Carter, you can't then go ask the guy to un retire it. I had another take here but I forgot it. There was just so many bad takes in there. Oh, I know I don't have a take. I have a very, very.
Dan Patrick
Wait a minute, hold on, hold on. What Paul?
Paul
Okay, Nick, let's say the New York Giants team, they've retired 14 jerseys in 100 years. Unless the Earth ends in 400 years, they're going to run out of numbers at some point based on this pace.
Nick Wright
Right, I understand. Which is why it is now. Now the threshold to have your number retired only raises it becomes much, much harder as it should and so I'm fine with that. Also you're anticipating Paul, a 400 year future where we don't. Where it's still there is a taboo on three digit Jersey numbers. Who's to say that world doesn't exist? Somebody all of a sudden's number 1 54. There's nothing wrong with that. Can I tell you a quick Matt Leinert anecdote I'm going to two years ago, I'm at Yankee Stadium for the World Series walking through the concourse and I'm walking and I see someone who's a little taller than the crowd who I don't instantly recognize except. And I'm walking by myself and I'm pretty secure in my masculinity and sexuality. But I'm just being honest with my friends Dan Patrick and crew. And I in my brain, my inner monologue is that might be the most gorgeous person I've ever seen in my life. Just standing, almost like ascending past the crowd. And then I'm like, wait, this person is walking towards me. Wait, this person is extending a hand. And then I realized, oh, that's Matt Leiner, who I've worked with. But I was just so disarmed by just seeing him in the wild in his natural beauty.
Dan Patrick
Did you tell him that?
Nick Wright
I. I think I told him on the air the way I told you guys. Maybe I didn't mention being comfortable, my sexuality part of it. I didn't want to make him uncomfortable.
Dan Patrick
Well, but yeah, you haven't been around Brady Quinn then, so, you know, you
Nick Wright
know, not my type.
Dan Patrick
Brady. Brady Quinn is cgi. You know, speaking of bad takes, you're Matt Leiner. Okay. All right.
Nick Wright
Did you want my college basketball top five?
Dan Patrick
You got one?
Nick Wright
Because I've been thinking about it.
Dan Patrick
Yeah.
Nick Wright
Well, I feel like there are three must includes.
Dan Patrick
Okay. We're going to do players you saw.
Nick Wright
Oh, no, I can't do that.
Dan Patrick
Okay.
Nick Wright
I don't have that ready.
Dan Patrick
Okay.
Nick Wright
Kareem is my five. Lu Alcinder Walton's my four. I'm gonna play them both and I think they'll figure it out. And pistols my two. There is a debate at point. Oscar magic. I'm going to go Oscar. And then there is not a hole. But the only hard position to fill is your three. And you have a different ways you could go with it. I lean Larry Bird. I would listen to you on if you think I am being too much of, you know, a slave to the history and that the youngest guy on my team is Larry Bird. That does seem a little odd. I'm being honest. But I don't. The I. I don't know that anyone else comes to mind. And it is the greatest college basketball players of all time, unlike almost any other ranking, are going to always be these old timers because nobody is going to play three or much less four years moving forward. So, like, you'd have to go to like a Doug McDermott type. And he's not. He doesn't make my team. With respect.
Dan Patrick
Well, you could have Grant Hill in there over Doug.
Nick Wright
I was so I thought about Grant Hill. I wanted to find a way for my guy, Jerry McNamara and his greatest Big east tournament ever to find at least. At least somewhere beyond the roster. I did not have a, you know, a Tim. Don. The greatest college basketball players I've seen. I'm gonna. Hansborough. Hansborough would be better remembered if he never played in the NBA. He was such a dominant college.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, but you gotta put Leitner in there over Tyler Hansbrough.
Nick Wright
This is gonna make you. I didn't see Leitner.
Dan Patrick
Well, you didn't see Oscar.
Nick Wright
No, but I, I was just saying guys that I've seen. I. I was doing a new list where I did guys that I've seen.
Dan Patrick
Wait, you didn't see Leightner?
Nick Wright
I was born in 84, so technically I saw him, but I have no memory.
Dan Patrick
Okay.
Nick Wright
Like, the first college basketball team that I have vivid memories of is the AI Georgetown team.
Dan Patrick
Okay.
Nick Wright
So, you know, so like 96, 90 something. Tim Duncan's the greatest college basketball player that I, you know, that I watch start to finish. And I, Jerry McNamara, you know, is a really of my lifetime. Mellow have the best season. I'm a Syracuse guy, but Mellow had the best season. Durant probably was the most dominant. If you don't care about the winning portion of it in college, like the most dominant single season of, you know, this century, in my opinion.
Dan Patrick
Talking to Nick Wright, you can check him out on YouTube, wherever you get your podcast, what's right with Nick Wright. And of course, Monday through Friday, first things first on Fox Sports. One, help me understand the logic of the Miami Dolphins here.
Nick Wright
Oh, you know, I actually support what they're doing, and I think that just taking your medicine and saying, we, we're not gonna do a half measure here. We made some very, very aggressive moves thinking we were championship contender. We weren't. And rather than piecemealing it, we are ripping it down in a way, not, I mean, $300 million salary cap, 150 million in dead money, and by the way, still 45 million in dead money coming a year from now on to his deal. We're gonna deal with that now. I think the reason people take issue with that is, well, then why sign Malik Willis? And my answer to that is Jeff Happley has, you know, familiarity with him in order to evaluate any of. I assume they're going to draft a receiver. Like young players on the roster, you need to have a level of competency at quarterback. And if they end up being having the number one pick, but they think despite that Malik shows them enough, then they can really supercharge the reload by flipping that number one pick. And if they, you know, if he plays well enough for them not to have the number one pick, then they sign the right guy. And if not, it's not like they signed him to a five year huge guarantee it. So it, and even if they get the number one pick and draft a quarterback, you still might be like, okay, but Malik, you start next year and then maybe he's a trade chip if he plays well. So I think what they're doing logically, if I was, if, if you said, nick, you're taking over the Dolphins, I would have done a lot of the same things, like let's take our medicine right now and then try to move forward. But they are going to be the worst team in the league by a lot. By a lot next year.
Dan Patrick
Who's more all in, the Broncos or the Rams?
Nick Wright
Oh, the Rams. I don't, I don't necessarily view the Broncos as all in. I think that they made a smart trade. I like the Waddle trade. He's only 27. He's on a reasonable contract. Like I usually don't like trading first round pick plus for aging player. But he's not really aging. He doesn't make a ton of money. The Rams are again, that's, there's, there's not a lot of franchises that I think are, you know, run well. And by well I mean the way I would do it. But the Rams recognizing we, we have the oldest excellent quarterback in the league. So let's, let's not treat 2029 as valuable as 2026. I think it's super smart. The Broncos saying our window is open, opening. So we don't want to go all in, but we also want to take advantage of the moment. And it's a very interesting thing with the disbursement of receivers across the league. I would argue right now, this moment there's more talented receivers than any other time in NFL history. But there's also two divisions that don't have any of them. The AFC west and the AFC east, where Jalen Waddle walks in and he's the best receiver in the division by a lot. DJ Moore, who I don't love but walks into the AFC east and he's the best receiver in the division by a lot. When neither one of those guys would be the fourth best receiver in the NFC north, so to speak. So they, you know, I think that was a smart move by Denver.
Dan Patrick
More surprising that the Chiefs brought in Justin Fields or Travis Kelsey came back. I,
Nick Wright
right after the Super Bowl. I thought Travis was going to be done as the offseason went on. I then came to believe he's gonna run it back another year. So I wasn't. By the time we got to the announcement, I wasn't surprised. I was surprised that there were folks, some friends of mine in the NFL media that were willing to be like breaking news. Travis Kelce listening to other teams. No, he wasn't like, I've never like there, there was a 0% chance he was going to play for anybody else and I think everybody knew that. I really like the Fields edition because they, they gave up nothing. So he's price wise very cheap for a backup. Three million bucks. Gardner Minchu is the Chiefs backup last year just got paid 7 million. You can say, well, they traded a sixth, but because of the NFL's weird comp pick formula, had they signed a backup, they would have lost a seventh. So they ended up essentially getting him for nothing. And I wanted the Chiefs four years ago, Dan, to sign Cam Newton so we can run quarterback sneaks again and maybe have just make teams when they play. The Chiefs spend 10 minutes of practice that week dealing with the wildcat quarterback run package. And so now Cam's still available. Nick, I know I, and I pitched it to Cam, but you know, Cam's building his media empire. I, so I, I, if you're, if you were to tell me Patrick is going to miss the first month of the season, which I do not think is going to happen, I would have rather had Kirk Cousins as my backup quarterback. If you were to tell me Patrick's gonna be there in week one, I would rather have Justin Fields because once Patrick is back and healthy, Kirk Cousins serves no utility. I think Fields can get on the field even once Patrick is back in health.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, I agree. I like the signing. I, I've been a stubborn Justin Fields fan. I, I mean he, he was in a bad situation. I thought he played okay in Pittsburgh and maybe he does that, you know, reclamation on the third team. Sam Darnold like gets an opportunity to like Malik Willis did in Green Bay.
Nick Wright
For him, this is the, either Kansas City or the Rams would be the two places I would want to go if I were him. Where it's like you don't, you know, I know he might have to play in the beginning for Kansas City, but get a year under that coach, learning at that quarterback's feet and then see if you can recharge your career. Can I, I don't know how much time we have. Can I ask you a favor?
Dan Patrick
Yeah.
Nick Wright
Because you are, you know, I am friendly with Charles Barkley. At least I was the last time I saw him. He maybe. Maybe not anymore. I would hope I am still no reason not to be. You are legitimate friends with him. The next time you see him, can you. Can you ask him, does he still like the NBA? Like, like, listen, I think it's a
Dan Patrick
fair question,
Nick Wright
and I want to be clear. I think Charles is the. The greatest in the history of the world at what he does. And I think a lot of people have failed trying to be Charles Barkley when you. There's only one Charles Barkley. Barkley.
Dan Patrick
The.
Nick Wright
And I'm not acting like we get this compliment a lot, but the greatest compliment that I ever receive about the TV show First Things first is when people say it reminds me of Inside the NBA, which, again, I'm not saying we. That compliment a lot, but whenever we get it, it means a lot to me.
Caller or Listener
It.
Nick Wright
That's one of, if not the greatest sports TV show ever. But man, oh, man, I wish they liked basketball still. Like, that's just.
Dan Patrick
I think. Well, the difference is you guys do research on First Things First. Like, you guys are still studying it. I think, you know, Charles and Shaq, I. I don't. I don't know if they really care. Like, you know, they're jaded with this, and now that we've allowed them to do it, you know, it's not like Charles is all. That's like with Charles with March Madness, I'm like, don't put him on March Madness.
Caller or Listener
But.
Nick Wright
So here's the thing, though. At least with March Madness, he's excited and intro like, what he's not gonna do with March Madness is be like, why are we talking St. John's they're not winning the championship. Like, the Chuck's almost vendetta against the Lakers, which actually seems like his media criticism of how the media talks about the Lakers is, to me, misplaced. Because if we want to say, listen, Celtics, Thunder, spurs, everyone else can't win the championship, that's probably correct. Like, that's. I. I think the vast majority of times one of those three teams wins the title, but after those three, the Lakers are looking eye to eye or looking down on every other team in the league. And so to then dismiss them, it's like, well, then we're dismissing Denver. We're dismissing the Knicks, we're dismissing the Pistons. And that, to me, is misplaced, given what they've done over the course of the year. In my. My humble opinion. And again, I say it on the front end, really, I'm not really afraid of any enemies, but I do want to be friends with Charles Barkley one day. And so I just want to talk about how much I love and respect him, but I just don't like that.
Dan Patrick
I'll see if I can broker a deal there.
Nick Wright
That would be great.
Dan Patrick
See if.
Nick Wright
I think you, me, and Chuck one day could gamble together.
Dan Patrick
I don't gamble.
Nick Wright
What if I. What if you. What if I buy you in?
Dan Patrick
No, you won't. It's.
Apple Pay Announcer
It.
Dan Patrick
No. It's a gateway drug. And I. I don't. I don't. I used to be.
Nick Wright
Yeah, but, but. But at your age, what are you worried about? Like.
Dan Patrick
But I don't need the money.
Nick Wright
It's. It's. You know what, Oddly, and I think Chuck would back me up on this. Sometimes it's not even. Not only is it not about needing the money, sometimes it's not even about winning. Sometimes it's. You need the loss. You need to feel a lot.
Dan Patrick
Oh, no, no, no.
Nick Wright
You need to walk out of there
Dan Patrick
and be like, oh, you know what?
Nick Wright
That's gonna hurt.
Dan Patrick
I'm gonna trust your opinion. I. I don't need to find. I don't need to feel it myself. What's the. What's the biggest loss you ever suffer? Like, where you go that. Well, that could bring me to tears.
Nick Wright
Oh, this is a great March Madness story. This is great because this is not, you know, as you get older and make more money, the dollar amounts, you know, shift. But the biggest loss as a percentage of my net worth.
Dan Patrick
Yeah.
Nick Wright
Was the 2008 NCAA tournament final. Kansas. Memphis. Right. Memphis is a three and a half point favorite. I am fresh off being on who Wants to Be a millionaire and winning 50 grand and gambling all the time and, like, and making $8 an hour doing radio. And I have a bookie in Kansas City that I gamble with that I convince him. I was like, listen, I. This true story. I was like, I had a dream that Memphis won by three, and I don't want to bet Kansas plus three and a half. I want to bet Memphis minus two and a half because I want to root for Memphis, but they're going to win by three. And I was like, so set me a price. So I had to lay one for. I had to lay minus 140. So I laid. I. I bet literally net worth, which, you know, I think it's 14 grand is what I had left of the 50 to win 10. Biggest bet of my life by a mile. And Memphis is up three with a second left and Chalmers hits the shot. Then they, they admit that was the Derrick Rose missed free throws. Chalmers hits the shot, Kansas wins in overtime. And I, and I went from being the only person in the world who was going to bet Memphis and one time back at zero. That's what, that's what it was. But I felt alive, Dan. I remember that story 18 years later. That's a little tear comes to my
Dan Patrick
eye thinking about it. I'll work on the Charles Barkley thing. Thanks for joining us.
Nick Wright
That would be great.

Dan, I really enjoyed your conversation with Nick, which led me to a bigger question and I have a smaller question also. When you're considering your all time greatest teams, are you more in the camp of odd the entirety of their career and their accomplishments or like their peak extended period of time or as I like to call it, kind of a LeBron corollary as far as greatest of all time.
Dan Patrick
Well, I tend to look at the totality of your career because you can have a couple of years where somebody is sensational. But you know, we were talking about Bryce Harper. He's had two MVP seasons, but then he's had, you know, some seasons that were not great numbers. You know, maybe B level, C plus level, B minus level, something like that. But yeah, I'm looking at the totality of somebody's career. Carrie in Minnesota. Hi, Carrie.
Caller or Listener
Hey, good morning. Ganondanettes. Long time, first time, six feet and a firm 200. I really just wanted to say I really enjoyed your, your interview with John Schmoltz yesterday. You know, I thought when he was playing he was always a class guy and yesterday he had some interesting ideas on the All Star game slash week. And you know, it always, when I see him, I'm a lifelong Twins fan and it always takes me back to the 91 World Series. You know, he pitched a great game into the bottom of the 8th and unfortunately for him, Jack Morris picked a greater game and you know, the Twins winning in extra innings and you know, I don't know about you, but I don't think we'll ever see a game like that again with, you know what, the pitchers going that deep?
Dan Patrick
No, no. I mean if you go five, it feels like boy kept him in there a long time. Yeah, those days are gone and you can't fight it. I mean, you can try. It doesn't matter. It's a workhorse. Is maybe going six innings. It's just, you know, that's, that's baseball, that's analytics. Back to the Matt Leiner story, that he doesn't want USC to unretire his jersey. And I get some point, I don't know how, you know, like what constitutes retiring a jersey? Like, what do you have to accomplish where you go, yep, we're going to retire that jersey like the New York Giants. Eli Manning, you gonna retire his jersey? They've retired his jersey. Okay, like I get Lawrence Taylor, but all right, so do you retire Phil Sims jersey? They retired his jersey. Right. The yankees have retired 22 numbers. Every single number from one through 10. I understand what liner's saying. Wait, you're retiring my jersey? Now you want to unretire because some, you know, high school seniors coming in and wants number 11 because he wore 11 in college. No. Now, unless they say, hey, you know, we're going to miss out on this five star recruit if he wants to wear number 11. And I'm, I'm going to guess their recruiting coordinator is probably saying that. But to ask him, according to Matt, numerous times, like, why numerous times? Why not just once? Yes, Todd. And you're not all in on playing for that school. If it's so much about the number, where's the passion and desire? I want to be a USC Trojan if I can wear your number. Yeah, I understand why Matt would be like, no, I mean, don't keep asking me. Yeah, I, I didn't agree with what Nick was saying. Yes. You know what? We'll talk about it when we come back. Final hour on this Wednesday, Dan and the Danette's Dan Patrick show.
