You are listening to the Dan Patrick show on Fox Sports Radio Hour 2 on this Monday. Best and worst of the weekend. What you saw that you liked, you didn't like. We'll talk to Chase Daniel, the ESPN and former quarterback analyst, and he'll break down some of the things we saw over the weekend. Do the Eagles have a problem with their offense? I think that's a rhetorical question. They do is are, I should say, are the Colts legitimate? What we saw even, you know, the Cowboys against the jets, it's easy to go, well, the Cowboys beat the jets, but you know, Chase has been talking about just how great Dak Prescott has been playing. And I think that's interesting because we look at the Cowboys and I don't know if they're playoff worthy. I think, you know, at the start of the season I thought that they were going to be. Then, of course, you know, you had the big trade with Micah, but you know, offensively with Dak. And they don't have CD Lamb in there either. The jets are still a mess. They're still trying to figure out, you know, who they're. I thought they were going to be a really good defensive team. I thought that and. But I thought that last year as well. So there's certain teams that. How many teams do you know who they are? Like, are the Colts going to be this team? Is Tampa going to be this team? Is Denver going to be this team? And you could even, you know, like the Commanders beating the Chargers. It feels like after five weeks we should kind of know who these teams are or get a pretty strong indication. I do like the Patriots who are. I do like them as a playoff worthy team. Was I surprised they won? Yes. I thought that they were going to keep it close. I didn't think they were going to win. But that's an impressive performance to go up to Buffalo and win 877-3DP show email address dpdanpatrick.com Twitter handle @DP show we'll come up with the poll question for hour two. Your phone call is always welcome. 8773 DP show operator Tyler sitting by. And we say good morning. If you're watching on Peacock, that is our streaming partner. Jaden Daniels has 1,000 yards rushing and over 4,000 yards passing. He's the first player in NFL history to have those numbers through his first 20 games. Stat of the day. Stat of the day. Stat of the day. Stat of the day. Here comes that. What? Stat of the Day. Top, by the way. Thank you, Ron Burgundy. Stat of the Day, brought to you by Panini America. The official trading cards of the program. If you want to look at production, how about Western Carolina's Taryn? Dick Dickens. He completed his first 46 passes in a win against Wofford. So the previous record was 29, set by a Princeton quarterback in 2013. Dickens completed 50 consecutive passes over his last two games. He was 53 of 56 for 378, three touchdowns against Wofford. Yeah.
Dan Beyer
Paulie, what happened to your Wofford Terriers? Dan, that defense is a mess.
Dan Patrick
I thought they had a good pass defense. You know, I was sadly, sadly mistaken. Speaking of defense, or lack thereof, who are the Ravens? Because you didn't have your quarterback, but you still. You got a defense that is being historically bad. They're giving up an average of 40 points in their losses here. And, you know, you don't think a Ravens team would be last in the NFL in defense, but here they are. And as great as Lamar Jackson can be, is going to have to be. Somebody has to win that division. And when you think about when the season started, we thought Ravens, then you probably thought Bengals, then Steelers and then Browns. Well, by default, it feels like there's only one good team in the division, and that's the Pittsburgh Steelers, which they'll be happy to take. It's like, hey, we're sorry. You don't have your quarterback or you don't have your quarterback or you don't have a good defense there. I don't think we've seen Pittsburgh play great football yet. The Browns, Dylan Gabriel look pretty good. I was, you know, being on the road, you're in London, your first start, you're going against the Vikings. Had a couple of touchdown passes. I like what I saw. You know, it wasn't where you go, all right, we got our franchise quarterback. I do think you have somebody who keeps you competitive. You know that? I. One of the other surprises. I thought the Raiders were going to be good. I did. I thought. Okay, Gino. Pete Carroll reunited. Max Crosby, Ashton, Genty Bowers. Okay, we got something here. Well, they're one in four. Geno Smith as he had two interceptions against the cold. So he is nine. He leads the league in that. I don't know what happened here, because I thought this was going to be a. All right, Pete, you're coming back and maybe you'll be. Maybe you'll be like the Denver Broncos were last year. And that has not been the case. All right, Seaton poll question for hour two. And let's recap what we did in hour one.
Seaton
All right, hour one, we got up there who had the worst weekend. Your options are Amari Di Mercado, James Franklin, the New York Yankees or the Texas Longhorns. Right now, James Franklin has almost 60% of that vote.
Dan Beyer
Hey, you gotta win.
Dan Patrick
Wait, we singled out James Franklin, not Penn State.
Seaton
No, no. That feels like it's a. It's a James Franklin. Every week is a referendum on James Franklin and not Penn State football. I'm sorry. That is the truth.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yep. Man, do I hear from Penn State alum, like, what do you got against us? You know, or. You're a Ohio. You're a closeted Ohio State fan. I go. I. I'm not. I. If Ohio State wins, great. If they don't win, I mean, it doesn't matter to me. Truly does not matter to me. Growing up in Ohio, it doesn't matter to me. I loved Penn State, you know, and Todd Blackledge was there, you know, but I. You're watching a team that we always think they're going to be there at the end. Now, this is the year. Great atmosphere. Got to see a game there. Loved it. But you can't lose to ucla. But yeah, Paul, also, Ryan Day was.
Dan Beyer
In this situation just a couple short years ago. A lot of wins during the regular season. When are you going to close out a season? Then he finally did it. Once you get it, you're in the hall pass zone.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, but James Franklin's been there a long time.
Dan Beyer
Yeah, longer than Ryan Day.
Dan Patrick
Ryan Day wouldn't have lasted if he did. What James Franklin's doing at Penn State, I've said this, he wouldn't have kept his job. There's certain places in America you don't keep your job with those results. And losing to UCLA. UCLA was 0 and 4. What are the numbers let's see. UCLA is the first 04 team to beat a top 10 team since 1985.
Dan Beyer
This is the start of the day.
Dan Patrick
All right, Seaton, what's the poll question for hour two on this program?
Seaton
Hour two. Well, I also put up there a local broadcaster should be a homer or down the middle. Results are pending on that one.
Dan Patrick
Okay. This came up because Dave Sims, the Yankee announcer, he wasn't. He was less than enthusiastic when Vlad Guerrero Jr. III did this 2, 1 pitch.
Todd Blackledge
He did he drive left field, grand slam.
Dan Patrick
See, the thing that. And you got to have it in context, too. But it felt like Dave Sims and his partner Susan Waldman might have been talking about the possibility with they can't get Vlad Guerrero out. And here he is with the bases loaded. Man, it almost felt that like that was a carryover. And Dave goes, yep, he did it. Or Susan says. And then just it's gone. Like we were talking about it and had a premonition. And then it's gone. Mark in St. Cloud. Hey, Mark, what's on your mind today? Hey.
Caller
Hey, Dan. How you doing?
Dan Patrick
Good, Mark, good.
Caller
You know, I am a local broadcaster and I got to take issue with what Fritz, he said. I do a small college here in Minnesota. I'm the biggest homer in our league, and I know it because I broadcast for my fans. Those are the people I'm going to be talking to. Those are the people I have to face after the games. Saturday, we lost a tough game in conference, 17 to 10. We turned it over twice inside the 20. I got my coaches next to me. I'm supposed to be excited because Bethel made big plays. No, I can't do that. I got a broadcast for my people that's just not going to work. And the highlight of the weekend was we're traveling to the Twin Cities about an hour drive on I94. We get behind slow moving traffic in.
Dan Patrick
The left lane and my color man.
Caller
Goes, must be a pass hole up there. Must be a pass. I said, you're absolutely right.
Dan Patrick
Thank you, Mark. Yes, Todd.
Todd Blackledge
I think we should using the words enthusiastic and excitement. That's not what I'm getting at. I'm not supposed to say. And it's a grand slam and the Yankees are getting killed worse. That's not what I'm saying. Just that you're calling it still a grandson. It's a big moment in a playoff game. I just want to make that clear. I'm not expecting a local announcer to be excited.
Dan Patrick
Here you go. Hold on. I'm going to have you and Vlad Guerrero at the plate with the bases loaded. And here's the pitch. And then you.
Todd Blackledge
Here's a long drive and he's done it again. And it's another home run. And the Yankees are looking like they're going to be down two. Oh, Susan.
Seaton
Philip Rivers just threw an 80 yard bomb against the Broncos. Todd, be happy.
Todd Blackledge
I think in a playoff. All I'm saying is in a playoff game, that. Not enthusiasm, not excitement. That's not the right word.
Dan Patrick
Philip Rivers has just thrown a touchdown pass against the Broncos in the playoffs. And so third and seven, and here's Rivers, his team needing a touchdown. KOA the Denver sports leader.
Todd Blackledge
Now Rivers back to pass and he gets behind the coverage and it's going to be a touchdown for the Chargers. And the Broncos find themselves in a deep hole with 612 left in the fourth quarter. This is Broncos football on Kohl.
Dan Beyer
I think I know what Fritz, he's saying here. In the moment of the hit, the grand slam, you say that was something and you have a little energy and then you low it down with what the situation is for your home team. Based off Fritz's tone here.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, but I still don't agree with him. The guy hit a home run, a grand slam. That was a no doubter. And he just gave you that, that you didn't have to dress it up. If Aaron Judge hit this, then he would have had verbal bouquets, but that wasn't the case. Vlad Guerrero, they probably were talking about how dangerous he is. We can't get him out. And here's the pitch. And he did it, man. It's. That's gone. Grand slam. And you're down, what, nine to nothing? I get it. If this was the ninth inning, bottom of the ninth, then maybe there's a little more excitement. But yeah, I'm not. I got pinstripes on. I don't care about the Toronto Blue Jays. Do you want the last word, Todd?
Todd Blackledge
It's a grand slam for the Mariners. Vlad does it again and it looks like the Yankees gonna have to win three straights.
Dan Patrick
Susan. Well, and that's how he did it. He did it for the Mariners, huh? Yeah, he plays for the Blue Jays.
Todd Blackledge
You know what I'm saying?
Dan Patrick
No, no, I didn't.
Todd Blackledge
That's why I'm sitting here and I'm on the broadcast booth.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, you've never done play by play.
Todd Blackledge
But. But the words enthusiasm and excitement is not what I'm getting at.
Dan Patrick
There's got to be another Sean in Kansas. Hi, Sean. What's on your mind?
Caller
Hey, guys, thanks for taking my call. Once again, best. I just like watching AFC west teams outside the Chiefs lose because I'm a Chiefs fan. So watching the Chargers lose, Raiders lose, that was great. The worst in the K State game. K State had a chance to win the game. They threw a long touchdown pass, but our wide receivers helmet was ripped off at the 20 yard line. And then the play was called dead even though he walked into the touch into the end zone. And so then we only ended up getting three points. We ended up losing. And now I'm just wondering how many kids are going to rip a player's helmet off when they know they're about to give up a touchdown rather than just give up the touchdown.
Dan Patrick
Well, we'll keep an eye on that.
Dan Beyer
I don't think there's going to be.
Dan Patrick
An epidemic of that. Yeah, yeah. I don't. I don't think so. But, you know, you never can tell. It's like punching the ball out, you know, forcing these fumbles. Zach and Knoxville. Hey, Zach. What's on your mind?
Caller
Adp, thanks for taking my call. I just love the banter between you and Todd. You guys sound like a husband and wife that are just staying together until the youngest goes off to college. And I want to know if the DP or the Danettes, are they the kids in this situation? Is it the BRGs? And if you have time to ask Chase Daniels if you and I also want to get your opinion, do you think the Commanders are a legit super bowl contender going forward?
Dan Patrick
All right. Well, thank you, Zach. Yeah. Sometimes we argue in front of the kids and not proud of that, but, you know, Todd and I try to air out our grievances. We try to talk through it. We don't let things build up.
Todd Blackledge
We don't want to divorce or anything, but we could use a little counseling.
Dan Patrick
Well, in two and a half years, I'm divorcing you. Okay. I'm just giving you a head start. I'm going to tell you the date that I'm going to divorce you. That'll be that. That Friday in Atlanta at the Super Bowl.
Todd Blackledge
I don't like to talk about that stuff.
Dan Beyer
Yes, Paul and Todd, you don't get half.
Todd Blackledge
I do not. I'm gonna keep my Dan Patrick cap and T shirt and exit stage right.
Dan Patrick
Yes, Marvin. So it's not the Monday after the Super Bowl. I don't know. I don't know that. I know that's a big day, that Monday after the Super Bowl. And do we want to do we want to call it quits. Coming back to the man cave. I, I'm toying with that idea because even though I started my career in Atlanta and was going to end my career in Atlanta, you know, do I come back and we wrap up the Super Bowl? I mean, I think America wants to hear my review of Bad Bunny. You know, just, I've had random people go, what do you think of the halftime guest? I go, I couldn't care less. I, I truly couldn't. Well, what about a guy who's not from America? I, I said, puerto Rico is part of the United States. And I said, I, I couldn't care less about this. You know, I didn't understand all the words the rappers were singing. So it's not like somebody said, hey, we should have closed caption or that. I go, I don't care. I truly, truly do not care. The halftime show. Yes, Marvin.
Dr. J
I, I don't think people realize that.
Dan Patrick
The halftime show isn't for the football fans. It's for the non football fans.
Dr. J
It's for your wives, your girlfriends, the.
Dan Patrick
People that don't care about football so they can watch the super bowl also. Yes, I truly. The commercials sometimes, you know, might stumble upon. I just don't, I don't consume it the way most people probably do. Oh, you got to watch for the commercials in the halftime show. No, you don't. And I don't think the commercials have been very good the last few years. And the halftime show, I told somebody, I said, give me the last five halftime performers. And they couldn't. They got two of the five. I said, see, it doesn't matter. It only matters when somebody tells you this is supposed to matter. You know, speak English. I couldn't care less. Yes, Todd.
Todd Blackledge
At the risk of getting ridiculed again, I go to a friend's house up the road for the Super Bowl. He throws a Super bowl party, and as soon as it hits halftime, I drive home. When during, I guess the. Maybe I'll catch the back end of the performance. I just want to get back by the start of the second half and if something really wacky or interesting happens, I can see clips of it. I don't need to see the live performers. That's when I'm driving back home for the second half.
Dan Patrick
I mean, we used to have up with people who did a halftime show like it. It wasn't a big deal. And then all of a sudden it became like you had to play and then you had to pay to play the halftime show. That artist had to pay to have that exposure. I'm like, once again, if you want to watch that, if I want to see somebody, I would want to see them in concerts, not a halftime show. And probably lip syncing like you know, it. It truly does not matter to me. So save your comments for somebody else because I don't care. Let's take a break. Let's take a break. Our good buddy Chase Daniel, he's an expert breaking down quarterbacks. We'll talk to him about the Eagles situation. Is this a real problem there? We're back after this in the Dan Patrick Show. Be sure to catch the live edition of the Dan Patrick show, weekdays at 9am Eastern, 6am Pacific on Fox Sports Radio.

It may look different, but Native culture is very alive. My name is Nicole Garcia, and on Burn Sage, Burn Bridges, we aim to explore that culture. It was a huge honor to become a television writer because it does feel oddly like very traditional. It feels like Bob Dylan going electric. That this is something we've been doing for like, hundreds of years. You carry with you a sense of purpose and confidence. That's Sierra Teller Ornelas, who, with Rutherford Falls, became the first Native showrunner in television history. On the podcast Burn Sage, Burn Bridges, we explore her story along with other Native stories such as the creation of the first Native Comic Con or the importance of reservation basketball. Every day, Native people are striving to keep traditions alive while navigating the modern world, influencing and bringing our culture into the mainstream. Worst loss of the NFL weekend was turned in by who?
Dan Beyer
Well, it's Cardinals, right? It's got to be the Cardinals. I mean you're, you're, you have a chance to go up 28 to 6 on probably the worst team in the NFL at home. And Dan, look, this is one of my pet peeves and I'm sure it's, it's one of yours too. How many Times do we need to have something like this happen where they just drop the football before they reach the goal and like carry it in with two hands. We've already had a couple times this year carry it in with two hands, hand it to the ref like you're in grade school and celebrate your team instead. It's just, it's just error after error after error. And look, the last three games, the Cardinals have lost by a combined five points and three walk off field goals. And I mean, the, The Cam Ward. The Cam Ward interception turned touchdown, too. It was just a litany of errors, but there's no doubt in my mind it's got to be the Cardinals.
Dan Patrick
Yesterday, Eagles lose to the Broncos and it feels like there's been some issues there. I touched on this three weeks ago. It felt like something was off. They were winning, but they were. It was taking some, you know, some spectacular plays and all of a sudden that offense isn't clicking like we thought it was going to. What. What are you seeing?
Dan Beyer
Yeah, I mean, look, the defenses are stacking the box against Jalen Hurts. And they're, they're definitely not letting Saquon Barkley get to 2,000 yards like they did last year. And at times in the season when that has happened and defenses has dared throw. Jalen hurts to throw the football down the field. He hasn't been accurate at all. Now times they're, yes, like yesterday's game, he's been extremely accurate and it's looked, looked really, really good. That's sort of the issue here. And look, they're. They're 4 and 1, right? And they've beaten three of the teams that I think are like top five in the NFL. They've beaten the Chiefs, they've beaten the Rams, and they've beaten the Bucks. Like, those teams are really elite teams. They've done it defensively and they've done it in spurts of, of offensive prowess. They're not motioning as much as they were last year with Kellen Moore. I'm not sure. I'm still trying to get a beat on their offense. It just. There's no consistency there. And they have 10 of 11 starters back. They should be a lot better. And look, I've been one of the, the bigger critics on Jalen Hurts. And when he looks good, he looks good. And when he looks bad, it just isn't clicking. And he's a very streaky type player. I'm not going to say this season reminds me of two years ago, I think when they started 10, 0 then really faltered down the stretch. But there are some signs offensively to what it was like two years ago where they faltered down the stretch. But I just, I think they still have the best team in the NFL. I still think they have the best roster in afl. I would just go more so a signature win for Sean Payton. More so than like damning loss to, to the Eagles.
Dan Patrick
You got Drake May going into Buffalo and pulling out a win. And I know that you break down these quarterbacks, but I'm curious, is what we're seeing with Drake maybe real?
Dan Beyer
It's absolutely real. And look, I've, I've broken him down quite a bit last year, quite a bit this year. It was about halfway through him starting last year, once he actually got onto the field that he started playing really well and then get with Josh McDaniels and, and the offense has looked really, really good. Look, if you're not following him from a national standpoint, you are now because this is what Drake may has done every single game. But it's now on for the national audience and 25 million people to see. So he's going to start getting his flowers nationally. But it's looked this good and he did some, and this is sort of crazy to say, but he did some Josh Allen type stuff playing Josh Allen and he's not quite the runner that Josh Allen is. But when he escapes the pocket like I don't know if I've seen a better quarterback this year escaping pocket and making some stuff happen like he did. And, and so I just think the national audience is, is sort of waking up for it. But he's been playing, he's been playing this good all season long.
Dan Patrick
The Chargers game, the Commanders were the better team. That wasn't a fluke. But I'm, it feels like I'm always critical of the Chargers, but. Yeah, I'm sorry, I, I, I'm always critical of the Chargers.
Dan Beyer
Yeah, I mean look, the, the Jane Daniels coming back, I think it really helped him. And that's a really good defense at home with the Chargers and you know, the first two games of the year, man, I thought I was on the Chargers bandwagon. I played for the Chargers. I know Justin Herbert personally and he's playing like an MVP through two games and then you sort of come back down to earth. You lose to the Giants and you lose to the Commanders, back to back NFC east losses and it just doesn't look good. I still think their defense is really good, but there's, there's a play and A stretch that really sort of lost them the game. And it was Justin Herbert, he had a guy open, Quentin Johnson in the end zone on a crossing route, missed it. He ends up throwing a Keenan Allen back, gets like, you know, knocked away. And then the very next play, it's an interception. And it just seems like that offensive line with multiple injuries just cannot stand up. And, and they really want to be, and it's crazy to say this, but they really want to be a throwing team with Harbaugh. And if they can't hold up in the pocket, if they get from behind, that's really difficult for them to come from behind and win. But I thought the commanders, I mean, I didn't think the commanders were going to go in there and win. But, you know, it is what it is. Any. Any given Sunday.
Dan Patrick
Chase Daniel, ESPN NFL and college football analyst I know you've been very excited. Dak Prescott, you've.
Dan Beyer
I think you're gonna say Dak very.
Dan Patrick
Well, but you were talking about how great he's been playing.
Dan Beyer
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
And that granted it's against the jets, but still, what are you seeing that it is. And he doesn't even have CD Lamb in there. So what, what is it about Dax performance that you've seen that you expect to continue?
Dan Beyer
I think bullish would be the word. Right. And, and the, the one thing for me is I'm a technician when it comes to quarterback play, so I don't really look at box scores. I like to watch the film and I like to try and pick out certain plays or moments within the game that you are controlling the football game. Stats are misleading sometimes. Oh, let me throw the football down the field. We can do this the way Dax doing and playing right now. It's at an extremely high level. It's really at a level I've never seen him play because Brian Schottenheimer, who's calling plays and also the head coach, he puts a lot on him at the line of scrimmage. So Dak is consistently and constantly changing plays to get into a new play that's, that's working. And I just haven't seen them do a lot this offense, the way they're sequencing plays, meaning, hey, they're calling 21 personnel. That makes it look like 11 personnel. They're in 22 personnel down the goal line. But they're throwing just makes sense on what an NFL type offense looks. They're using motion at an extremely high rate. There's a lot of shifts, there's a lot of motions, and at every Single turn. Dak Prescott's been in control and look, he's missing his four starting offensive linemen. He's missing his number one receiver and he's missing his number three receiver. Like, I don't think this Dallas team is a good team. Do I think they can make the playoffs and win 10 games. Maybe the defense is improving, but it was against the Jets, I give you that. But if you just really look more than the stats and the box score, I just like the way he's playing the position of quarterback. And he's been doing it all year long.
Dan Patrick
The Baker Mayfield resurgence here from last year and this year. And I don't know, since you played the position, the importance of the quarterback in the final two minutes or the coach, if you're going to say, I'm going to give a little bit more credibility to a coach or the quarterback because Baker and Tampa Bay again, in the final drive, final two minutes, you're winning games. And that's not a coincidence.
Dan Beyer
No. And he's only thrown one interception. He's thrown 10 touchdowns this year. Thrown for a ton of yards. I think he's second or third in the NFL in passing yards. But it's got to be the quarterback in two minute drives. Because I've been with some really good quarterbacks and I've been with some not so good quarterbacks. The good quarterbacks in two minute drills, they call their own plays. It like, I remember when I was with Breeze in two minute drills, he's one of the best of all time. That in just, just watching him operate two minute. And Sean's like, go. Drew's like running out to the field for a two minute drive. And Sean's like, hey, you got it. Meaning you're calling the whole series. Now, I'm not sure if Baker's doing that, but it's. The coach has the easy job. It's like, hey, one play. And there's a set amount of plays that you run in two minute, unless you're huddling on third down or red zone. So there's a, there's a menu of, of 10 plays and Baker has just owned those. And all four wins have come in two minute drives. And I do think that that sort of calluses a team, that, that, that, that gets a team sort of rolling in the right direction. And I just think in general, like, you have to start talking Baker Mayfield for mvp. Just look at his stats, look at what he's done, look at what he's meant to this team. And they have not been Fully healthy either. I just think it's been an extremely cool situation for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Dan Patrick
And he has that personality that it, you know, it's almost like he invites that drama, like he, he wants it, that nothing seems to be too big for him. And, yeah, I think that has to go. Like, you can't go out there and go, like, I don't, you know, let's. Good luck, guys. You need that guy who gets in the huddle, takes charge. And that's certainly Baker. The Chiefs getting, you know, Xavier Worthy back, seem like that unlocked a lot of different things, options for them. Is that the only thing with the Chiefs that you're seeing offensively that is changing them, making them a little more threatening?
Dan Beyer
Well, they got under center, they ran the football. They were in 12 personnel, they were in 21 personnel, and that's something they really haven't tried to do this year. And then I do think, though, the catalyst is Xavier Worthy, I do think what he's doing is opening up the field. And look, they haven't had a snap. And I know it's been talked about, they haven't had a snap with Rashee Rice, Hollywood Brown and Xavier Worthy on the field at all. And so my whole thing was like, hey, if the Chiefs can just get to three and three, if they can get to three and three through six games, because they have some tough games coming up, they're going to be just fine. But I, I just have never really understood, like, hey, especially early this season, hey, the Chiefs, they suck. They're not that good. And there's been that. I'm like, okay, you still have the best quarterback in the entire world. You still have Travis Kelsey who can do it. I think that offensive line has shored up a little bit more. But Xavier Worthy, when you have a weapon like that, it's not Tyree Kill esque for the Chiefs, but it does open up the short pass game, it does open up the run game. Because when you saw Xavier Worthy last week, the defense was in two high safeties. And then, you know, you're really smart, but if you're in two high safeties, there's one less guy in the box. You're going to run the football. And look, I just don't want Patrick Mahomes to continue to be the, the leading rusher on the team. So someone else has to step up for that. But it definitely helps.
Dan Patrick
I'm going to be the guy who says, can you explain the 22 personnel and the 21 personnel and the 12 personnel and the 11 personnel?
Dan Beyer
Yeah, absolutely. So, Dan, when we're saying 12 personnel, the first or any personnel, the first digit talks to the amount of running backs in the game. So 12 personnel want the 11 running back. The second digit always talks to the amount of tight ends in your, your group. So 12 personnel is one back, two tight ends, and you need five skill players, Dan. So how many receivers is that? Two. Right. And then, so if you go 22 personnel, which is like, it just means heavy personnel. It's two running backs, two tight ends, and only one receiver. There's also 13 personnel, which I think the Chiefs do a good bit of one back, three tight ends. And I think you're sort of seeing a resurgence of these heavier personnel. Just talking about trends overall in the National Football League because so many teams play just nickel defense, so they have five defensive backs on the field at all times rather than four defensive linemen, three linebackers. And so when teams are playing nickel personnel, five DBs, even to 22 personnel, two backs, two tight ends, you're seeing teams run the football a lot more because teams are so sick and tired of, of guys just sitting back in too high safety looks and saying, hey, try to throw the ball overhead. They're just like, we can't do it. And that's why I think you're seeing a resurgence of the play action pass under center game as well. So these are the trends I'm seeing. I hope I explained it good enough.
Dan Patrick
You did. And I've been saying this for years, that eventually you're going to have an offense that's going to be all power. They're going to go, they're going to run it down your throat because everybody's playing that prevent defense. And you got, you know, quicker guys, not beefier guys up front. And now you're seeing that with Saquon Barkley. I mean, you're seeing the, the resurgence in, in running the football there. So thank you for that explanation, I think. Yeah, of course. Yeah. And when you do games on tv, just make sure that you speak our language, not your language.
Dan Beyer
Yes. I, you know, you guys are really smart. And so I, I just figured that the audience of the Dan Patrick show knew that. But yeah, that's good advice on tv because I do try to, you know, the best advice I got so far was from Kirk Hertray. He's like, hey, call a game like your mother in law's watching. I was like, oh, okay. Like, if you want to say cover two, that's great. Just explain what cover two means. And so that's been great advice, but you guys, come on, you, you know that.
Dan Patrick
No, no, we're not. You know, because I could have gone through this entire segment and acted like I knew what the 12 person.
Dan Beyer
I saw you laughing when I said that. But I'm glad, like, I have, like, that's sort of what I try to do on my YouTube page, too. I try to, like, explain some stuff like that for the average football fan.
Dan Patrick
Well, you know, when we throw out a gap and all of that stuff and, you know, just.
Dan Beyer
Yeah, that's a little. That's a little much. The A gap, though, is the. Between the center and the guard, just so you know.
Dan Patrick
Oh, yeah, I know that. That's when I was, when I was running the quarterback sneak. I went a gap all the time. All the time. Have fun on Wednesday night and remember just explaining, you don't, don't. You don't have to talk wall to wall. Pick your spots, be your brilliant self and enlighten people on some things.
Dan Beyer
I will. Yeah. You know, I've, I've actually, I like to talk a little bit, but I've, I felt like during the broadcast that if you let it breathe a little bit, the, the atmosphere and you don't have to fill every single spot you.
Dan Patrick
Do know with words.
Dan Beyer
And so that's not.
Dan Patrick
Do not go wall to wall. Make sure that you don't talk too much because your play by play guy still has to do his job. It's just, you're punching, you're just hitting, hitting, hitting. You know that. That's what you do. Hit, hit, and then get out. Hit.
Dan Beyer
Who do you think the best analyst is in the NFL right now? Or who do you enjoy listening to?
Dan Patrick
You know, I like Olson a lot.
Dan Beyer
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
Herbie has kind of opened my eyes and ears a little bit more because he. I'm still amazed when the play happens and then you come back and then you have to, you have to, you know, basically decide, this is what happened. You're going to describe it. I'm like, golly, I never saw that. And I think that's what's amazing when you see, okay, you know, if Romo went at his peak or Collinsworth, Herbie. I mean, there's a lot of good analysts, but the great ones, the great ones give you enthusiasm nuggets. They're smart, they're to the point they get out and it makes it a crisper broadcast. So that's.
Dan Beyer
I'm gonna do. That would be this Wednesday?
Dan Patrick
Yes, yes. I'll be more than happy to critique you on it. Please.
Dan Beyer
I need. You know what? Here's the thing, too. I know you guys gotta go, but old X players that play, we like to be coached. And so much of the fact, at least what I've heard from broadcast analysts, we don't get coached because it's so subjective. Like, you can think something's awesome and then my boss thinks something stinks. But overall, I feel like there's a good feel for what a broadcast should look and feel like. And so I think that's the hard thing about being an analyst is like everyone likes something different, but I'm just going to be true to myself at the end.
Dan Patrick
Yeah. And I think Aikman got to this point where he didn't give a bleep. Like, he's just going to call the game. And I think that changed with Troy. He's just like, hey, this is it. And I love that because I don't want you beholden to anybody playing favorites. I just want you to call the game. But, yeah, Wednesday night. All right. I didn't expect that I would be watching Middle Tennessee State and Missouri State, but now I am. Now I am. Chase, there you go.
Dan Beyer
I love it. Thanks, man.

It may look different, but Native culture is very alive. My name is Nicole Garcia, and on Burn Sage, Burn Bridges, we aim to explore that culture. It was a huge honor to become a television writer because it does feel oddly like very traditional. It feels like Bob Dylan going electric. That this is something we've been doing for hundreds of years. You carry with you a sample of purpose and confidence. That's Sierra Teller Ornelas, who with Rutherford Falls, became the first Native showrunner in television history. On the podcast Burn Sage, Burn Bridges, we explore her story along with other Native stories such as the creation of the first Native Comic Con or the importance of reservation basketball. Every day, Native people are striving to keep traditions alive while navigating the modern world, world influencing and bringing our culture into the mainstream. Hey sis, what if I could promise you you never had to listen to a condescending finance bro tell you how to manage your money again? Welcome to Brown Ambition. This is the hard part when you pay down those credit cards. If you haven't gotten to the bottom of why you were racking up credit or turning to credit cards, you may just recreate the same problem. A year from now when you do feel like you are blee from these high interest rates, I would start shopping for a debt consolidation loan starting with your local credit union. Shopping around online looking for some online lenders because they tend to have fewer fees and be more affordable. Listen, I am not here to judge. It is so expensive in these streets I 100% can see how in just a few months you can have this much credit card debt and it weighs on you. It's really easy to just like stick your head in the sand. It's nice and dark in the sand. Even if it's scary, it's not going to go away just because you're avoiding it. And in fact it's. It may get even worse. Let's go around the room. Best and Worst of the Weekend Todd, lead us off.
Todd Blackledge
Best of the weekend previously winless UCLA with new offensive coordinator Jerry Neuhezel. Takedown number seven Penn State at the Rose bowl by a score of 42 37. The Bruins led 277 at the break. Worst as he potentially coaches himself out of the hall of Fame, Bill Belichick and North Carolina are humiliated in Chapel Hill by a very average Clemson team. The Tigers had four passing touchdowns in the opening quarter alone. The Tar Heels have given up 48, 34 and 38 points in their three losses so far this season.
Dan Patrick
Okay, I don't think it's a legitimate topic. I I laughed when you said, is Belichick coaching his way out of the hall of Fame?
Lauren LaRosa
It is.
Todd Blackledge
Tongue in cheek.
Dan Patrick
A little bit it is. But it is the Pro Football hall of Fame. He's not getting into the College Football hall of Fame, but the Pro Football hall of Fame. He's already very, very secure. Seaton Best and Worst of the weekend.
Seaton
My best of the weekend I was in Sacramento this weekend for the USL Jagermeister Cup. That was awesome. There's 12,000 people there in Sacramento for the game. Really great organization. The people there themselves that run Sacramento Republic are really awesome. The league is great too. And my Hartford Athletic one. So I'M very pumped about that. My worst of the weekend is Penn State losing to ucla. That is just a punishing loss.
Dan Patrick
Yeah. And you know, you get the score is not really reflective of how good UCLA was or how bad Penn State was. And you're running the football. Marvin Best and worst of the weekend.
Dr. J
My best of the weekend, Stefan Diggs returning to Buffalo.
Dan Patrick
10 receptions, 146 yards.
Dan Beyer
He was ready to play from the opening tip.
Dr. J
Worst of the weekend I watched the Commanders was that Chargers Sofi Stadium, easily.
Dan Patrick
The worst home field advantage in the NFL, bar none. Anytime I watch a game there, when.
Dan Beyer
It'S a Rams game or a Chargers.
Dan Patrick
Game, it feels like a neutral site game. The worst. Paulie Best and worst I'm going to.
Dan Beyer
Get best of the weekend to the Florida Gators football team for beaten Texas. They could have packed it in. They lost to South Florida, lsu, Miami this month and then they take down Texas. So it's weird because the fans there may want a new coach, but this guy's got a lot of lives. Napier and then the worst of the weekend, it's obvious. Amari Dimmercato, the running back of the Cardinals. You're an average NFL running back and this is going to be your level of fame and you're probably not going to do a lot more after this. And you'll be, you know, cautionary tale. Embarrassing.
Dan Patrick
Yeah. And you would think for a guy who scored four touchdowns, you would be saving every football. Exactly. Every single one of them. And I would make it mandatory if I'm a head coach, you hand the ball to the official when you score a touchdown. Hand the ball to the official. If you want to celebrate, you can do that. But we're going to find all of our players when you score. And granted, it might be just a ceremonial $100. We're going to find you, put it in the tip jar, you know, for stupid things at the end of the year and we'll have a party. But I mean, you have to, you shouldn't have to tell your players to do this, but if you want to simplify it, just say every, every single touchdown you score, bring the football to the sidelines. I will pay for that football. Okay. Yeah. Marvin Desean Jackson did this on Monday.
Todd Blackledge
Night Football about 15 years ago and.
Dan Patrick
People still haven't learned yet. He did it on national TV primetime and people still haven't learned. I just, I don't understand that. You get to the goal line and you have to get rid of the ball. The greatest touchdown celebration ever was Isaac Curtis of the Cincinnati Bengals. He would score a touchdown and he would drop the ball behind him when he got into the end zone. So that DB was running trying to get him and he just drops it right in front of you? Yeah, Paul, it's a home game.
Dan Beyer
Walk into the stands and give it to a kid. You want some good publicity? Why don't you get your name out there in a positive way, hand it to a kid.
Dan Patrick
Kids can't get to them, you know. I try. Yeah, Marvin, it doesn't even look that cool either. There wasn't anything cool about it. And then he got down on his knees and he started celebrating like praise Jesus. And I go, wait, dude, that's not a touchdown. You better say your prayer. You better have somebody answer your prayers.

Podcast: The Dan Patrick Show by iHeartPodcasts and Dan Patrick Podcast Network
This episode centers on major surprises and disappointments from the sports weekend, with an in-depth focus on Penn State’s shocking loss to winless UCLA, ongoing NFL intrigue (especially about the Eagles’ offense), and a guest segment with ESPN analyst and former NFL QB Chase Daniel. The show blends analytical football discussion with humor, banter among the regular cast ("The Danettes"), and memorable sports talk moments.
Penn State’s Embarrassing Loss to UCLA:
The main talking point is No. 7 Penn State’s unexpected 42–37 defeat at the hands of previously 0-4 UCLA at the Rose Bowl. Dan and the crew discuss the implications for coach James Franklin and the continued perception that Penn State can’t win the biggest games.
Quote:
"You can’t lose to UCLA. UCLA was 0 and 4. What are the numbers? UCLA is the first 0-4 team to beat a top 10 team since 1985."
— Dan Patrick (10:08)
Assessment of NFL Teams After Five Weeks:
Dan observes that after five weeks, many teams’ identities remain unclear:
Quote:
"How many teams do you know who they are?"
— Dan Patrick (03:22)
Polls Discussed:
Listener Calls:
Local broadcaster Mark calls in and weighs in on the home-team vs. impartiality debate for local announcers.
Quote:
"I’m the biggest homer in our league ... I broadcast for my fans. Those are the people I gotta face after the games."
— Mark, caller (12:01)
Dan and Todd Banter:
Playful skits imitate bland/homer announcer styles and debate what emotional tone is “right” when something big (but bad for the home team) happens.
Quote:
"The words enthusiasm and excitement is not what I'm getting at."
— Todd Blackledge (15:19)
The worst NFL loss: Arizona’s numerous “error after error” meltdown.
Commentary on players dropping the ball before the goal line.
Quote:
"Carry it in with two hands, hand it to the ref like you’re in grade school and celebrate your team."
— Chase Daniel (27:43)
Defenses are “stacking the box” against Jalen Hurts.
Hurts appears “streaky,” and the offense lacks consistency despite returning most starters.
Quote:
"They’re not motioning as much as last year...There’s no consistency there."
— Chase Daniel (29:05)
Drake Maye’s strong play for Buffalo—inviting national attention.
Quote:
"He did some Josh Allen type stuff playing Josh Allen...I don’t know if I’ve seen a better quarterback this year escaping the pocket."
— Chase Daniel (30:51)
Schottenheimer’s play-calling puts more on Dak at the line—leading to “total control” and his best level of performance despite missing key players.
Quote:
"Dak is consistently and constantly changing plays...at an extremely high level I’ve never seen from him."
— Chase Daniel (33:53)
Mayfield is credited with clutch play, particularly in two-minute drills—inviting legitimate MVP chatter.
Quote:
"You have to start talking Baker Mayfield for MVP...All four wins have come in two-minute drives."
— Chase Daniel (35:54)
Xavier Worthy’s return has added dynamism.
Chase explains “12, 22, 11 personnel” in layman’s terms (Running backs, tight ends, receivers).
Quotes:
"If the Chiefs can just get to 3-3 ... they're going to be just fine."
— Chase Daniel (37:50)
"When we’re saying 12 personnel, the first digit talks to the running backs...The second always is tight ends."
— Chase Daniel (39:19)
