On a strange Thursday. Football coming up tonight, a lot of great basketball performances from last night. But the lead story has to do with the FBI and the arrest of the Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups. Also, Terry Roger plays for the Miami Heat and their gambling charges here. The FBI holding a press conference as we speak. So we will Learn more this hour. 877-3-DP Show Email Address dpdanpatrick.com Twitter Handle @ DP Show Good morning if you're watching on Peacock. Thank you for downloading the app. We say good morning to our radio affiliates around the country. Fritz, he's here. Seaton's here. Marv Paulie, yours truly. The Flacco around and find out T shirt. It's only available for maybe this week. Seaton said maybe we could extend it for next week because the Browns should win their game against the Jets. So when the Browns lose, that's when we take down the Flacco round. T shirt or the Bengals.
Fritzy
When the right. When the Bengals lose.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, we all lose. Okay.
Fritzy
That's when we take the shirt down. They'll stay up for as long as they're winning.
Dan Patrick
Okay. That's right. He is with the Bengals because that's.
Fritzy
As long as people are flack flacking around Flacco. Flacco flacker flacking around and finding Out.

Stat of the day brought to you by Panini America. The official trading cards of the Dan Patrick Show Cleveland Browns are in the news because there was a story or stories yesterday at Kevin Stefanski, the Browns head coach, was asked, is, you know, Deion Sanders son Shador getting some opportunities with the first team, getting some first team reps because after all, you know, he would be a hit away from Dylan Gabriel of getting in the game. And Stefanski said no, that he was not getting first team reps. So once again, the media's obsession with Shador Sanders getting playing time is interesting because has anybody asked the question to the Tennessee Titans about their backup quarterback getting any reps? Because your rookie quarterback, number one pick hasn't been playing very well. I think it's Brandon Allen might be the backup quarterback. Is anybody asked that? Is anybody asking if the backup to Jackson Dart is getting any reps with the first team? The media is obsessed with this, with Shador Sanders. Dylan Gabriel is played okay. He's played okay. That doesn't mean you got to put in Shador. I hope Shador gets an opportunity, but I hope it's not one of those let's, you know, do him a solid and have him play. Dylan Gabriel is a better quarterback right now than Shador Sanders. It's plain and simple. Not many fifth round draft picks get this kind of attention. And granted, it has to do with Dion and you know, a source with the Browns said, well, do you think if his name wasn't, last name wasn't Sanders, would he have been drafted higher? Would he have been given this opportunity? I said, I don't obsess over this. I mean, we had Dion on at the super bowl and he was telling us basically he was going to try to manipulate the draft. He was going to say, don't draft my son, my son doesn't want to go play for you. And then did that lead to him falling, the free falling? I'm going to guess some of that. People looked at his tape, didn't think, you know, that he, the way he played, held on to the ball, he led to a lot of sacks that. Yes. Did he play well? Jackson State and Colorado? Yes. I, I put him third on my Heisman ballot. That's how much I thought of him. But I, I want to see if they have something. You know, here's another thing nobody's talking about because they don't want to talk about it. DeSean Watson's going to be back this year. I believe in Cleveland, DeSean Watson could return to Being the starting quarterback with Cleveland let that sink in. So this isn't just about Dylan Gabriel or Shador Sanders. I don't know if either are starting quarterbacks, franchise quarterbacks. I hope they get the opportunity because next year with two first round picks, maybe you use those picks, one of those picks moving up in the draft, or maybe you take a quarterback. But DeSean Watson, from what I'm told, is at least in the picture for the Browns this season, late in the season. But I don't think anybody is asking if the Titans, you know, backup quarterback is getting first team reps. I don't think so. I mean, we Talk about with Tua2 is a hit away. Is anybody saying, hey, is Quinn Ewers getting reps with a. See, it's we pick and choose and it's unfortunate. And then you're, you're kind of forcing this story. That's what we do.
Paulie
Yeah, Paulie, I saw the Stefanski clip. The Browns head coach talking about it. He was asked why, you know, when Dylan Gabriel was a backup, he got first team reps. When Joe Flacco was a starter, he said, the difference is Dylan Gabriel is a young quarterback who needs every starting rep in practice. And that's why Shador Sanders doesn't get him. That's the difference. Any chance that the Browns somehow play Deshaun Watson later in the season to showcase him?
Dan Patrick
Oh, I don't think anybody's going to trade for him.
Paulie
Right.
Dan Patrick
I, I mean, that's. We've seen a lot of reclamation projects. You know, Michael Vick was in a dog ring killing dogs and, and found a landing in Philadelphia. So you can't say no, that'll never happen. I can't imagine a team going, you know, you know, who are missing greeting it is Deshaun Watson. That's the guy we want as our franchise quarterback. But nobody's saying anything about Cam Ward's backup, are they? And he hasn't played well at all. Got roughed up this last game. But nobody's saying, man, is it Brandon Allen? Is he like an A M quarterback? And he's been around. But I don't. Nobody's saying anything. Jackson darts back up. Is anybody bringing up Jackson, you know, is, hey, does Jameis Winston get any reps here since she probably won't be playing Russell Wilson? Nobody's saying any of those things.
Paulie
Yes, Paulie, by the way, Deshaun Watson is making 46 million this year with the Browns and for sure 46 million next year with the Browns.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, yeah, we Just, we. We are so desperate for this story to happen and see what he can do. All I can tell you is from what I was told, and I've been told that he has handled himself well. He did have the speeding ticket. I would never let my backup or third string quarterback meet with the media. I don't know why the Browns have allowed that. You don't find that with any other team? I don't think. I mean, Russ had a comment, but that was social media comment about Sean Payton. By the way, Sean Payton held a press conference and he said that he wasn't taking a shot at Russell Wilson.
Guest/Analyst
The euphoria, the way that game unfolded, that was strictly about dart. That was in no way, shape or form anything that was directed at Russ.
Fritzy
So.
Guest/Analyst
And I might be able to see.
Dan Patrick
How he might perceive that.
Guest/Analyst
But coming off that win and watching how he played. Yeah, that. That wasn't any intention at all.
Dan Patrick
Okay, come on. Okay, let's. Let's go around the room, Todd. Well, that's your head coach. I'm not going to you. Seaton, you agree with Sean Payton. This was not a shot at Russell Wilson Jr. The third.
Fritzy
No, I do not.
Dan Patrick
All right, Marvin.
Paulie
No.
Dan Patrick
Paulie?
Paulie
No. It's possible it was subconscious by him, but it was still conscious.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, Like, I can wink at this. Like. Okay, but.
Paulie
Right.
Fritzy
So like coach. So let's follow this thread. It was about Jackson Dart. Because the backup is worse. That's what you're saying. You're saying the backup is that week is worse. Who is that?
Dan Patrick
Yeah, yeah.
Guest/Analyst
Oh, that's right.
Dan Patrick
It's the guy that I used to coach. Oh, I see what you're doing.
Fritzy
Oh, that's why you guys think I meant. Oh, I know that's not you guys.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, the media twists everything. You guys take it out of context. Always take it out of context. All right, let's see. Poll question for hour two. Jason Garrett, the contributor analyst to Football Night in America, will join us. Coming up, Vikings and the Chargers. Oh, man, the JJ McCarthy situation not getting any better. Carson Wentz, come on down, play again. This is a. It's not my most must win game of the weekend, but it's up there with the Chargers. Like, this is the most must win game of the week, not the weekend, because Thursday night at home, you got to win this game. You guys have been sputtering. We thought this was the new and improved version of the Chargers, and we haven't seen that. So poll question for hour two is what? Seaton?
Fritzy
Yes, we have up there Right now. More unicorny. Victor Wembanyama or Shohei Ohtani? Shohei is running away with this one. I really disagree strongly.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, no, I'm gonna go with Shohei.
Fritzy
Yeah, I get it. You have. It's like he. Dude's like what, 76 or 7 4, whatever it is. It's got handles like crazy. Shoots from outside. He's like blocks shots. He'll block a three pointer from under the hoop. Like, who does that? Nobody. Nobody does that.
Dan Patrick
Nobody.
Fritzy
I strongly disagree with this. 75% have Shohei David in Phoenix.
Dan Patrick
Good morning, David. What's on your mind today? Hey, good morning.
Caller
I finished up House of David on Netflix and it made me think, is there a bigger upset in competition than David versus Goliath? And that makes me think of a poll question. Biggest upsets, of course. Douglas over Tyson, Miracle on Ice, Leicester.
Dan Patrick
City winning the Premier League, and of.
Caller
Course, David over Goliath.
Dan Patrick
All right, well, thank you, David. I don't know what the point spread was when David met Goliath, but I'm going to guess that Goliath was a pretty big favorite there.
Fritzy
Yeah, the Philistine sports books. Goliath was a heavy favorite, but they were. They were begging you to take the David money. Begging you.
Dan Patrick
This felt like the jets against the Colts in Super Bowl 3. People just didn't do their homework on David. Just like they didn't do their homework on the Jets. They dismissed them. Nobody's going to stand up to the big bad Baltimore Colts. Johnny Unitis. Yes, Paulie.
Marvin
Yeah.
Paulie
But David, a little bush league, throwing a rock. That's a little bit of a cheap shot. Use your fist, use a hammer or whatever.
Fritzy
Show me where it was in the.
Guest/Analyst
Rules that he couldn't.
Fritzy
Show me in the rulebook where he said he couldn't.
Paulie
I'm looking.
Dan Patrick
This was UFC before ufc.
Paulie
Oh, really?
Dan Patrick
Yes.
Fritzy
It was sort of the Bill Belichick, really, of street fighting, because he found loopholes.
Paulie
Oh, there's no written rule, I guess.
Fritzy
No written rule.
Dan Patrick
Yeah. Yeah.
Fritzy
Who said?
Dan Patrick
Yeah. His bill is always scouring the rule book there, looking for a loophole. And I think David did that with Goliath. And I. I'm going to say this. I can say it now. I think Goliath might have been on performance enhancing drugs.
Fritzy
Wow.
Dan Patrick
To get that big.
Guest/Analyst
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
I'm just saying. I'm gonna say it now. I think that there may have been some clear and cream.
Marvin
You can't just throw that out there like that without a couple of sources.
Dan Patrick
I do have a couple of Sources irresponsible from back in the day, Balco and Jerusalem. You know, Moses was a great source for me. Yeah. Like, he had more than 10 Commandments.
Fritzy
He's a great source for us all, Dan.
Dan Patrick
Yes, he is.
Fritzy
He's a great source.
Dan Patrick
He had more than 10 Commandments. Yeah. Nobody knows. But he tripped and he lost a few of them. And you're like, Look, I got 10. Wait, I thought you had 20. No, just 10. Tom in North Carolina. Hi, Tom. Welcome back.
Caller
ADP. I know you said since the very beginning of this sports gambling stuff, we've only scratched the surface. And the reason why I'm calling is I saw a. I saw an article it was showing about the Robin Hood Company. The trade company is doing an. What they call an event contract, basically allowing you to buy something maybe you want to buy. You know, the Chiefs win in the super bowl or whatever, you know, back and forth there. And I say that because it's actually allowed in all 50 states. So I'm wondering if the FBI is actually investigating some of these people. Are you seeing. Are you going to see somebody's card with, you know, 100 shares of Apple stock and a Victor Wembanyama, you know, MVP card?
Dan Patrick
I don't. I don't know enough about it, Tom. I don't. I am following, you know, Vegas polices Vegas because it has to. That's. That's their livelihood. That's how they make their money. But when it's offshore, when it's illegal booking, they can't follow that. Now they can follow the Trends, you know, DraftKings and FanDuel, you can follow trends. But, you know, there's so much money that's bet illegally. I think everybody thought, oh, it's going to be above board. It's not. And it's not like, I'm not worried about Vegas. Vegas will find these things. They have to find these things. Their income depends on this. It's the other stuff. It's the other stuff that maybe you don't realize, and that's what makes me nervous, is you could still get to a college kid and you get to the guy who doesn't have nil, but the guy who thinks he should have nil. And you say, hey, if you fix this game, I'm going to give you $25,000. Now you say, who's going to fix a game? They fix games for a lot less than that because nobody thinks they'll get caught. That's why they do it. If you thought you were going to get caught, Then you wouldn't do it. So you're like, well, who's going to care about Duquesne basketball or Temple basketball? No accusations, by the way, but I'm just throwing out random schools. Nobody's. And nobody's going to know if I'm shaving points here. You know, just like Michael Porter's brother. He's probably thinking, I'm a bench player in Toronto. Nobody's going to know, pick up some money. But those things stand out. They are looking for these things when you'll see a game taken off the board and then you go, wait, what happened? Well, they probably look at, you know, some activity that looks sound shady and they go, no, you know, take it off the board. Because there are times when I, I remember I was going to bet on something and I was getting 10, then all of a sudden I'm getting 4 and I'm like. And then my bookie took it off the board and it turns out that there was an injury to the quarterback that I didn't know about. You know, we didn't have Shefty back then. You're like, I'm going to take that game. Wait a minute, where'd my points go? Well, the other quarterback wasn't playing and then, you know, they took it off the board. Alrighty. We'll talk some football with Jason Garrett. He'll join us coming up next. Keeping an eye on the FBI press conference with Chauncey Billups and Terry Rozier. And then Damon Jones. Didn't he play Miami Heats. That sound right, Marvin Cleveland a little bit. Now, Terry Rozier is a member of the Miami Heat and he's involved in this. He did not play last night. I don't think did he? And Portland played last night. So Chauncey. Did Chauncey coach last night for the Blazers? I think he did. Then he. Oh, man. Once again, this is in the NBA. It's the FBI investigating these players. All right, we'll take a break. We're back after this Dan Patrick Show.

Once again, we're monitoring the FBI with their press conference that started a little over 20 minutes ago. And I think there are close to 30 people, not necessarily athletes or coaches, who are involved in some kind of gambling probe with the FBI, but the headliners, of course. Chauncey Billups, he's the head coach of the Blazers. Terry Rozier, a journeyman who plays for the Miami Heat, and Damon Jones, who I don't think is in the NBA anymore. He bounced around a lot, but he was with the Miami Heat as well. We got football coming up tonight. We got the Vikings and the Chargers. Jason Garrett of the NBC Football Night in America crew, former Cowboys head coach and football Night in America, Packers, Steelers. That'll be on Sunday night. We'll talk to coach about that. How do you assess the Chargers from what we saw early to where we are now?
Guest/Analyst
Jason, you know, it's disappointing, but I think A lot of it has to do with injuries, and I don't want to make it about that. But, you know, they built their team to be really strong and stout on the offense and defensive lines. And, you know, you think about both their tackles being out, I just think it takes away so much of their identity and how they want to play. You know, it's a long year. They're going to be some ups and downs, and I think for them, the biggest thing is to kind of fight through this and come out the other side of it, because I think there's plenty there. I think they still have a really good defense. I love the quarterback. I love how the quarterback is to me, has stepped up more in some bigger moments and kind of put the team on his back. You know, I said this, we had a conversation about this at the hall of Fame game and, you know, there was debate about how good Justin Herbert is. And you know, my comment is at some point you have to reach into the chest of the guys on your team and grab their hearts and bring them with you. And to me, he has everything. He's incredibly talented guy, obviously, athletically, his arm, I think he's a rare guy, too. His preparation and all of that. And I think he's taking that next step. So they just have to get through this time with their guys being out and come out the other end. I think they're still going to be there in the end of it.
Dan Patrick
We've seen this now. It's almost like if you don't make it as a high first round pick at quarterback, you're going to get kicked to the curb, you're going to bounce around as a backup, then all of a sudden you re emerge. So Daniel Jones and Sam Darnold both didn't make it in New York, and here they are thriving with different places. And I'm curious about that separation from first couple of years to then you get into your later twenties that you somehow figure it out. You know, Baker Mayfield, when he started to getting kicked around to now and later in his 20s figuring it out. What is it about that position that some guys may not get it early, but they eventually get it later?
Guest/Analyst
You know, I think there are two things. Let's start with the environment they were playing in at the outset. You know, typically these guys who get picked higher go into bad teams and, you know, I can remember for years we had this. There was a debate about how do you make the environment more quarterback friendly for Romo? Well, we drafted Tyron Smith, Travis Frederick and Zach Martin, you know, I mean, it was, it was as simple as that. And Tony had his best year, the year that we drafted Zach Martin, because we ran the heck out of the ball. We had, you know, DeMarco Murray led the league in rushing. Tony was incredibly efficient, and that's how the whole thing goes. So, you know, when you're in those hard environments and you're learning how to play, it's a bad combination. So I think as quickly as you can get the environment right for those guys, and typically it starts up front for me, you know, control the line of scrimmage, don't have them running for their lives and make good picks. You got to pick the right guys when you do that. And then, you know, those guys learn as they go. They're in a good place, they don't have to do everything. You know, burden is a big thing in football. If you can spread the burden around, one part of your team or one guy on your team doesn't have to win for you every week. That's what the best teams have. So typically those guys, when they're young, they're carrying too much burden. The environment's not very good, and then people sour on them, particularly in places like New York where there's high scrutiny. So I think the biggest thing for them is to get a reset and then go to a better place. Tampa is a better team than Cleveland was or Carolina was. Indianapolis is a better team than the Giants were for Daniel. So those guys get a chance to settle in. They have their scars, they've learned, but they're also in a better place.
Dan Patrick
I'm also, you know, you being a former coach and a quarterback, we talk about reps for backups. You know, that Shador Sanders not getting first team reps, and Dylan Gabriel is a hit away from Shador coming in. Did people ask you about Troy Aikman's backup? Does he get reps with the first team with the Cowboys?
Guest/Analyst
He doesn't. He doesn't. And I live that. You know, I was the third quarterback there for a while, but I was also the backup there too. And you just don't get reps. You know, the starters get the reps. You get the scout team stuff. You know, maybe you get a little something different. Coaches will give you 10 plays on Friday or they'll give you two plays at the end of a, a 20 play set or whatever. But, you know, I learned early on, you know, I would complain to myself like, like, how am I supposed to play? Well, I never get any reps. And then you realize that, you know, if you can't function in this environment, they're going to find someone who can. So you better, you better develop a relief pitcher mentality and you better figure out how to do it. And so the way I did it was you spend so much time watching film, so much time knowing the plan inside and out. You know, I would drive around, when I'd be driving home, I turn the radio off and I'd call plays out loud.
Dan Patrick
Right.
Guest/Analyst
I mean, literally, you do everything you can to, to. To create reps for yourself, to get yourself ready to go. And, you know, I'd throw after practice, and you're always doing stuff because it goes. You're standing on the sideline and I would use to call the plays in and the quarterback gets hurt and you put the headset down, it's like, okay, you go from 0 to 100 miles an hour. But. But, you know, the question is, do those three or four or five or 10 reps during the week, is that what allows you to play well? Is it better to have the guy who's playing all those snaps anyway, take those, and then you just have to have a relief pitcher's mentality to go in and function. And, you know, so it's a tricky thing. But, you know, Troy Aikman, who's the first ballot hall of Famer, he got all the reps. And so I think if you're Dylan Gabriel, he probably deserves all the reps too, because he's got a lot of catching up to do.
Dan Patrick
Give me a. Give me a. For instance, you're driving home, you turn off the radio, and then what are you yelling out?
Guest/Analyst
Yeah, I mean, literally you're saying out loud, okay, this is bunch, right. Motor scout. Right. 525 up post. Right. I mean, that's what you're saying.
Dan Patrick
And you imagine being in the car next to you and they're watching you shouting it out, hand signals, the whole thing.
Guest/Analyst
Yeah. I can't tell you the number of times it happened, like, who. What is this guy doing? You know, but, you know, you have to steal reps any way you can. And one thing, a little bit of a different topic. You know, when I became the head coach in Dallas, there was this virtual reality thing that, that became available to us, and we had it for a while. And the reason we had it was probably because of my experience as a backup quarterback never getting reps. And we created a virtual reality room where backup quarterbacks could go in there and go through. Essentially, they were hearing the play from the coach going to the line of scrimmage, you could look left, you could look right. There's DEZ Bryant over here. Here's Jason Whitten. I mean, it was a real thing. And for me, I thought it was invaluable. Not for the starter. The starter is getting all those reps, but the guy who doesn't get the work, and I know Jaden Daniels has done a lot of work with this, but I think that's a real thing and that's something that can really help people going forward.
Dan Patrick
Wait a minute. So I go into a room. Do I have to put on glasses? You do. And. And I'm. Now, the defense isn't going to hit me, but how are they moving? So I know where I'm going to like my hot receiver going through progressions. How much time do I have to do this?
Guest/Analyst
Well, we had all these crazy cameras at practice and these 360 degree cameras that they made up and you would have it like 15 yards behind the ball and everybody, you had to stay away from the camera. But literally you would hear the offensive coordinator call the play, go in the huddle, walk up to the line, and you could do this and this with these, with these headsets on. And literally there's DEZ Bryan. It's not an image of DEZ Bryan. That's him right there. And you see the safety creeping down and you see the strong dog pressure coming over here. And to me, I would go in there afterwards, I'm like, this is incredible. I mean, I love the idea of it because like I said, I was the guy that was on the highway calling out the plays, right? So I think it's the wave of the future.
Dan Patrick
Myself, Jason Garrett, NBC Football Night, America's studio analyst. Sunday night, it'll be the packers at the Steelers. Which team do you have a better handle on with these two?
Guest/Analyst
Oh, that's a great question. That's why you get paid the money. Dan Patrick. Because. Because I think there's questions about the handle of each of them. You know, I think Pittsburgh, I think you have to feel good about what they've done with Aaron Rodgers playing there. He's played at a high level for them. They've done a good job offensively. The defense where they made a huge investment. That's. That's a concern. I mean, Joe Flacco on had been a Cincinnati Bengal for about a week. He went down there and he looked like, you know, Kenny Anderson and, you know, boomer size and wrapped in one. I mean, he was fantastic. So some question marks about Pittsburgh. Their ability to defend the pass really comes up. So I have concerns there. Green Bay, they've just been a little up and down. They've had some ugly wins. I really like their team. I like their defense. I think Halfley's done an excellent job. You know, Micah Parsons has been so impactful, you know, opening things up for other guys. But then in the big moments the other day, he had three sacks. So I think you're starting to see that thing mesh a little bit. I love Jordan Love. I think he's still getting to a point where he needs to be a consistent player week in and week out for them. And I think a big part of that is them, you know, making Josh Jacobs a part of it. So again, he doesn't have too much burden. So they've both been kind of fits and starts. Green Bay went a little bit ugly. Pittsburgh, some question marks on their defense. In the end, I like Green Bay's team more.
Dan Patrick
The Chiefs look like a completely different team now. You give. You give Mahomes a couple of weapons in there. Rasheed Rice, you get worthy back. They look like the best team in the afc.
Guest/Analyst
Well, we talk about this every week on football night in America. And when the Chiefs are struggling early on, everyone starts to get down on him. That's the kind of world we live in. And my response always is, have you guys been watching for the last decade? Has anyone been watching this? I mean, this team is historic. The coach is incredible. The quarterback's incredible. The defense, you know, they have these hall of Fame players. So to me, it was just a matter of, you know, they had some question marks on the offensive line. They're still working through that. It's better the last couple weeks, but, you know, getting their guys back, I think that's a big thing. And Rasheed Rice, a couple years ago, I'll never forget this, I did the playoff game between Miami and Kansas City, the freezing cold game up there in Kansas City. And if you remember, Kansas City got got shellacked. I think it was Christmas day against the Raiders. They were terrible.
Dan Patrick
Yeah.
Guest/Analyst
And, and, and it almost looked to me the following week that they said, okay, here's who we can trust. Can trust Mahomes, I can trust Kelsey, I can trust Pacheco, we can trust Rasheed Rice. Those are the only guys getting it. And that. And that's what they did. That's what they did in the playoffs, and they went all the way to the Super Bowl. Kind of taking that approach so it was like they sat down together and said, this is the approach we need to take. This is how we're going to win. And I feel like they've done that again. And when they get these pieces back, when Rasheed Rice comes back, all of a sudden Hollywood Brown is a secondary player, Travis Kelce is a secondary player. You know, Gray is a secondary or a third player for them. And so you get them back into their slots. And now they're really hard to stop because Rasheed Rice can handle the burden. And they did a great job getting him acclimated last week.
Dan Patrick
Your Cowboys or your former team, that offense looks really good and Dak looks, I've always said when Dak plays and he's healthy, he plays well. It's just keeping him healthy. But what do you make of did we underestimate the Cowboys this year after the Micah Parsons situation?
Guest/Analyst
Well, I think if you look at the team, they're set up to have success on offense. And like I said about the Chiefs, the way I feel about Dak, just haven't been with them for a while. If anybody's been watching football objectively without an agenda for the last 10 years, you say this guy's a really good football player. He's played well from his rookie year on and injuries have been a factor for him. Playoff success has been a factor. To me. He played really well in the playoffs early on. They haven't played quite as well in recent years, but you know, this guy's a fantastic player. So what they've done is three first round picks on the offensive line. They have a very good tight end. You know, you pay CD Lamb, he's one of the best playmakers in the league. You have Pickens, who to me, Dak was going to do a great job getting him acclimated. Javante was someone who I love coming out. It was just a question of is he back from the injury. So there's a lot of weapons on that side of it. So it doesn't surprise me that they've played well as long as for the most part, the quarterback stays healthy. The question was on defense. And even before the Micah Parsons trade, I felt like they were under resourced on defense. You know, who were the. Who are the marquee guys and are they really marquee guys? And I felt like Micah Parsons made a lot of people on that defense way better. He made the other rushers better. He made the COVID guys better. So you take him out of the mix to a defense that I felt needed help anyway, and it's, you're probably seeing what you thought you'd see. They're struggling to stop people. It was better last week against Washington, but Washington's top three receivers were out. So we'll find out more as they go. But there's no doubt they're, they're, they're a juggernaut on offense and the questions on defense are real great to talk to.
Dan Patrick
You have fun on Sunday night. Thank you again, Jason.
Guest/Analyst
Yeah, you're the best.
Dan Patrick
Jason Garrett, NBC Football night in America. And that'll be Sunday night. It'll be the packers at the Steelers kickoff, 8:20 Eastern. All right, we'll take a break. Got a lot of phone calls. Once again keeping an eye on the FBI press conference involving, among others, Chauncey Billups and Terry Rozier, a journeyman with the Miami Heat with gambling allegations and still not sure. Terry Rozier felt like he was under investigation for NBA gambling, whereas Chauncey Billups might have been for poker. So we'll keep an eye on that and we'll give you any answers that we have and any guess that would be appropriate for this situation. We're back after this.

Dan Patrick
Okay.
Fritzy
Beating Victor Wembanyama. I think people are grossly underappreciating how much of a unicorn that Frenchman is.
Dan Patrick
You're gonna die on that hill, aren't you?
Fritzy
I don't know if I'm willing to give my life for it, but I just don't agree with it.
Dan Patrick
Okay, so some of the details here from the FBI. The press conference. The FBI called out the mafia families, the big ones in New York. Lucchese, Bonanno, Gambino, Genovese. And they were allegedly involved in backing rigged poker games to scam victims out of hundreds of thousands of dollars. This according to officials. Three of the more than 30 defendants targeted in today's indictments allegedly involved in both sports betting and fraudulent gambling scheme. This according to the FBI. During the poker games in one of the alleged schemes, those involved use technology such as poker chip tray analyzers and X ray table that could read cards face down. On the. Damn. They could read the cards face down. According to the prosecutors, victims allegedly cheated out of $7 million in the poker scheme. The FBI said that they never take their eyes off the Italian organized crime families. So I guess the NBA portion of this. Officials dubbed the NBA gambling scheme operation nothing but net. Oh boy. One scheme, Operation Royal Flush not involving.
Fritzy
Anyone we know, is it?
Dan Patrick
Nothing but net. Three of the defendants involved in both schemes. So fraudulent poker games. See professional athletes allegedly used as face cards to lure victims. So this is where they mentioned Chauncey Billups. The so called face cards included Chauncey Billups who at the time of the scheme was a former player. Now the current head coach of the Blazers, Damon Jones, former NBA player. The victims allegedly referred to as fish people had no idea everybody else at the table was in on the scam. Once the game was underway, the defendants fleeced the victims out of tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars per game. The mafia families allegedly fixed underground poker games. NBA betting six arrests have to do with NBA gambling. There's a Whole lot here. But the mob reportedly involved in the widespread spread gambling. This according to Cash Patel, FBI director, speaking at the press conference.
Paulie
Yeah, Paulie, you can't believe in anything anymore. Dan, remember when we were kids and the mafia would hold straight up poker games? You could go in there secure.
Dan Patrick
Yeah.
Paulie
Sad.
Fritzy
I remember the good old days when the mafia was shaking down big organizations, not private poker games.
Dan Patrick
Yeah.
Fritzy
Geez. Desperate times falling on hard times.
Dan Patrick
Desperate times. Yeah.
Paulie
Paul, it's unclear from reading the NBC report if Chauncey Billups is involved or responsible or a victim in this. They were said they were using pro athletes to hook in other people. Was he being used or was he part of it?
Dan Patrick
It's unclear what Sounds like he was being used. Probably paid to bring in fish to have a illegal poker game.
Fritzy
That's messed up.
Dan Patrick
And this might have to do with Gilbert Arenas when he was arrested. You know, was it a illegal poker ring? And was the mob involved in this? Once again, I have a source on this, but I. I'm not going to be flippant in the information I have because I haven't had somebody verify stuff that went on with Gilbert Arenas with his poker situation there. But there's a lot going on here. Yeah. Seaton.
Fritzy
Yeah, a lot going on there.
Paulie
You know, we're saying is Chauncey Billups was always a lockdown defendant.
Dan Patrick
Wow.
Paulie
Too soon.
Dan Patrick
Wow.
Fritzy
The conversation we've been having is. Should we make that joke on air? Yes or no?
Paulie
I feel good about it.
Dan Patrick
Okay.
Paulie
Nothing personal.
Dan Patrick
No, no. I thought it was a little too early for that. Little too early?
Guest/Analyst
You all.
Fritzy
I said he was a lockdown defendant.
Dan Patrick
Lockdown defendant. I'm supposed to be a journalist here.
Paulie
This is a ring you don't want to be part of.
Dan Patrick
Let's go.
Paulie
Gambling humor. Come on, Fritzy, get in there.
Guest/Analyst
No, don't.
Paulie
Oh, I'm sorry.
Dan Patrick
No. Oh, by the way, so we have the flacco around and find out T shirt available until the Bengals lose. We also, I think have a. I think we have a Hall of Good T shirt ready to go too. I believe we do. Sources close to me tell me that for a limited time up on the website, I think this week is going to be a Hall of Good T shirt.
Paulie
Yes, Pauline, can we send the first one to Joe Johnson?
Dan Patrick
Wow.
Paulie
The godfather of the hovg.
Dan Patrick
Do you think that he's going to appreciate being a Hall of Good? Nope. I don't know.
Paulie
I don't think so.
Dan Patrick
Okay.
Paulie
Jamal Crawford was okay with it.
Dan Patrick
Jordan in Utah. Hi, Jordan. What's on your mind?
Caller
Hey, Dan, how's it going?
Dan Patrick
Great. Yeah, great.
Paulie
Time.
Caller
Caller 62 165. I was listening yesterday, the conversation about the most boring greats of all time in the NBA, and I kept thinking you guys were leaving somebody out that plays today. In my opinion. Maybe you disagree. Could be Pat Duncan when he's finished. Nikola Jokic.
Dan Patrick
Nikola Jokic. What? He's not boring. I mean, he's awesome. His passing. Top five passer in the league.
Fritzy
I think we've referred to him as boring, though, many, many, many times on the show.
Dan Patrick
Yes. Yeah, not me. Understanding the greatness of being, you know, a white guy who can't really jump, who is great passer.
Fritzy
You can jump out of the gym.
Dan Patrick
I used to.
Fritzy
You were just talking about how great you were.
Dan Patrick
I know. Then I lied about my height, that I wanted it to be more impressive, that I was dunking, that I was 6:2, not 6:3. But yeah, I mean, I, I, I played an elevated game, you know. Literally. Yes. Marvin.
Marvin
Oh, contrary. You always said Nicole Jokic was not a highlight guy.
Dan Patrick
No.
Marvin
So boring.
Dan Patrick
All right, feel bad. He's awesome. Final hour on the way. Fritzi's here, Seaton's here. Marv, Paulie, and yours truly, back after this.

Hour 2 – Shedeur Sanders Obsession, Jason Garrett
Date: October 23, 2025
This hour centers on major developing news in the sports world, notably the FBI's investigation and arrests connected to NBA gambling—including high-profile figures like Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups and Miami Heat's Terry Rozier. Dan Patrick and the Danettes also tackle the media's intense focus on Shedeur Sanders' NFL prospects, backup QB dynamics, and quarterback development. Jason Garrett, former Cowboys head coach and NBC Football Night in America analyst, joins for a deep football discussion. The episode blends sports analysis, humor, and real-time news updates, giving listeners a full spectrum of current sports intrigue.
[04:01, 24:03, 45:56]
The lead story is the FBI's press conference regarding arrests tied to NBA gambling, focusing on Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups and Miami Heat player Terry Rozier.
Early details revealed up to 30 involved, including unnamed athletes and coaches.
Federal officials allege mafia-backed, rigged poker games and fraudulent gambling schemes; pro athletes apparently served as “face cards” to lure victims to these games.
Use of technology such as poker chip tray analyzers and x-ray tables enabled reading cards face down. Victims lost up to $7 million.
Quote — Dan Patrick [45:56]:
“The FBI called out the mafia families, the big ones in New York... Lucchese, Bonanno, Gambino, Genovese. ...They were allegedly involved in backing rigged poker games to scam victims out of hundreds of thousands of dollars.”
It's unclear if Billups and others were perpetrators or victims; the NBA scheme is dubbed “Operation Nothing But Net.”
[05:19, 08:55, 29:47]
The show critiques how media fixate on Shedeur Sanders (Deion Sanders’ son), now with the Browns, questioning whether he should get first-team practice reps over starting QB Dylan Gabriel.
Dan notes no one obsesses over other backup QBs in similar situations:
Dan acknowledges Sanders’ potential but points out Gabriel is currently the better quarterback and that Sanders’ fame is partially due to his father.
Discussion broadens to the unusual nature of giving post-draft media access to a backup/third-string QB, which could exacerbate narratives.

[25:59–40:20]

Post-press conference, more details:
Ambiguity remains about Chauncey Billups’ exact role—whether he was knowingly involved or used as a lure.
