June 11, 1998, a deputy from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department went missing.
Dan Patrick
Hey, if they'll kill a cop and bury him, what are they going to do to me?
Podcast Narrator
What really happened to the missing deputy? Valley of Shadows, a new series from Pushkin Industries about crime and corruption in California's high desert. Listen to Valley of shadows on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Back in 2016, we said, let's do a podcast. Little did we know it would last 10 years. Final hour on this Monday, Dan and the Danites Dan Patrick Show. I don't know how much snow we got, but it's probably close to 18 to 20 inches. It was a blizzard. A blizzard. It's one of those where you go. And my wife said this to me last night. She goes, I hope this isn't one of those where they say it's going to be a blizzard and it's not. I said, so you're rooting for the blizzard? And she said, yeah, you know, because there's this big build up. One of the local weather guys said, this is my Super Bowl. I'm going, all right. And they eat this up live, local, late breaking, super Doppler radar. And they are going to tell you about this wall to wall, all things canceled. Yes.
Seton
When I left the hotel this morning, the news station was in the parking lot. Oh, I'm in the right spot.
Dan Patrick
Oh, boy. We did reach out to Jim Cantoria, the weather Channel. We thought maybe if he wanted to do a weather update, a live shot, as they say, from our parking lot, that we were going to give him the whole parking lot. Yes, Paulie.
Paulie
Dan. A blizzard has a definition.
Dan Patrick
Okay.
Paulie
It's a severe winter storm. High intensity conditions for at least three consecutive hours. Sustained winds or frequent gusts 35 mph or more, and visibility less than a half a mile, less than a quarter mile at times.
Dan Patrick
Nothing about the accumulation of snow?
Paulie
No, that's actually not part of it. It's more about the. It's snowing, but the miles per hour, the wind and length of the condition.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, it was windy. It was gusting last night and today, but everybody made it. A lot of the back room guys just stayed in the man cave. Came in yesterday early. And they had makeshift beds here around the man cave. Yes. Marvin.
Todd
Yeah, it's always awkward when you walk in here. You just stepping over people. Oh, excuse me, Dylan. Oh, excuse me, Rob.
Dan Patrick
Yeah. When you got guys in a various states of undress and they're in. In a Z kliner or they're on a couch or, you know, there's a bed. I don't think anybody brought a sleeping bag in, which would have been my idea. If I had to sleep here, I'd have this sleeping bag. All right. Todd, you didn't stay here, though. You stayed in a hotel?
Todd
I did not. It got me wondering. What if someone. What if we didn't have full attendance? What if someone didn't make it even though they had the opportunity to crash in the studio or stay at a hotel and everyone made it except for one person, then how do you deal with that?
Dan Patrick
Are you preparing for when you don't make it? Like, what are you going to do?
Todd
Everyone was here. Where were you? You could have Stayed at the studio. We offered you a hotel nearby, but you couldn't make it because it was too much snow and wind. It would be bad to have to hold on to that.
Dan Patrick
Thank you, Todd. Al Michaels will join us coming up in about 20 minutes. I think we'll have a new poll question perhaps for the final hour of the program. We gave a a couple of thought provoking poll questions earlier this morning. Seaton.
Seton
We did. We did. Al's doing very well. He's making a sort of a slow comeback here. Would you rather win a gold medal or a Stanley Cup? 59% of the audience say a gold medal. And right now this is sort of the real race. Whose career would you want? This is all related to us. Hockey wins. Kurt Russell, Al Michaels or Jack Hughes? Jack Hughes has 44% of the vote. Al Michaels, 41% of the vote.
Dan Patrick
Poor Kurt Russell. Legendary actor, played her Brooks in the movie.
Seton
Well, it's tough because you're going against two guys that did it.
Dan Patrick
Yeah.
Seton
And then you get to act like you did it. You know, it's tough. I mean, Jack Hughes lived it. He got smashed in the face. He got his teeth knocked out and then a couple minutes later scored the game winning goal for a gold medal. And Al Michaels has one of the most, if not the most iconic call of all time.
Dan Patrick
And then.
Seton
Or you could be in the movie that the people did those things.
Dan Patrick
Yeah.
Seton
You know, I'm not saying that's not a great thing. It's awesome. It's a cool gig.
Todd
But.
Dan Patrick
And we got to come up with something for Jack Hughes. We got to come up with some kind of endorsement or commercial losing his teeth. And I mean, that picture, that smile with the flag around him and you just won the gold medal. Awesome. If I'm Jack Hughes, I don't fix my teeth for a while. Yeah.
Seton
Because certainly not while you're still playing.
Dan Patrick
Yeah. But you know, a lot of those guys will have a tooth missing, but if they go out in public, they'll put the tooth in. I mean, I'm surprised when you see hockey guys that don't have, you know, fake teeth.
Seton
I hope hockey has the best dental
Al Michaels
plan of all the sports.
Seton
That's all I know is that the players, the players union better be taking care of the dental plan.
Dan Patrick
Yeah. You know, I've never heard of their dental plan. Yes, Todd.
Todd
I think I would get a mouthpiece to look tough where it looks like I have missing teeth when I actually have all my teeth. But it gives the impression that if you were Knocked out, I'd be that guy.
Dan Patrick
Okay, I could see that. Where you have teeth that are blacked out, but it looks like you've lost.
Todd
That's your mouthpiece. It looks like you got a whole bunch of Chiclets out there.
Paulie
Yes, Paul, I'm on the NHL's website and you know how most teams have a doctor on site? Of course. Any pro sports team, every NHL team has to have a dentist on site for every home game. It's a good gig.
Dan Patrick
But I've chipped teeth before. And then you get that air and. And it just goes right to the nerve. And he's out there playing and then after that he's drinking beer. I can't imagine how that felt on a live tooth there. But he. He got banged up. He just. Even the guy who hit him from Canada. Like, there's no. My bad. Sorry about that. It was just skated over and sat down in the penalty box. Just a high stick. I mean, all right, that's just. That's normal. Yes, Todd.
Todd
You don't skate over to the opponents. Aren't you going to say, I'm sorry? Look what you did to my face. I'm bleeding here. I can't even find my teeth. How could you not come over and apologize?
Dan Patrick
Jonathan in Daytona Beach. Hi, Jonathan. Hey, guys. Beside the obvious best of the weekend Brandon Banter, He's a rookie QBA bowler. I just happened to get it on the CW. I don't know why I haven't watched bowling in 30 years. This kid was at his first major final on television against number one ranked player. And he bowled the fifth ever perfect game on television. It was amazing. Well to 300 to win this first tournament, which was a major championship.
Al Michaels
Doesn't get much better than that.
Dan Patrick
No, no, it can't get any better than that. It's a perfect game to win a championship or the title. But thank you, Jonathan, and thank you for the CW carrying bowling.
Paulie
They own bowling in America.
Dan Patrick
Oh, yeah, that's my go to. Yeah, I want bowling. I go to the cw. I told you about a guy I met who watches bowling all over the world. Like he'll watch bowling in Germany. That he has something rigged up that he can watch. Bull. He's got bowling porn and he'll watch bowling all over the world. He is. He is one of the most knowledgeable bowling people that I've ever met. That's not a long list, by the way. Yes, Marvin.
Todd
No, I'm just shocked that somebody's that interested in bowling.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, just overall and just to watch it all over the world. Yeah, yeah, Paulie, I'm gonna get a
Paulie
stay in my lane here. But is bowling different in other countries?
Dan Patrick
I don't think so.
Paulie
Or is it like it's still 10 pins, same rules?
Dan Patrick
Yeah, I believe more of a candle
Seton
pin in the other countries, but.
Dan Patrick
Or duck. Or duck pin. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. My wife came across a clip of me being told to stay in my lane. And. And she didn't understand that, like, somebody was scolding me about curling. And it was a clip that went viral. And so she said, what did you say? Where somebody told you to stay in your lane? I said, well, you got to be more specific than that. Huh? I get told to stay in my lane a couple times. I got told to stay in my lane because I didn't know about green day or as much as I should have and curling. And I think one other item that I got roughed up on.
Paulie
Yes, Paulie, America, obviously, 10 pin bowling. There's five pin bowling in Canada and nine pin bowling Kaglin in Germany and random places in Europe.
Dan Patrick
Oh, okay.
Paulie
Back to you.
Dan Patrick
All right. Jeremy in Wisconsin. Hi, Jeremy. What's on your mind? Hey, good morning. DP from the frozen tundra. So, just the best of the weekend. As a soldier in the US Army, I love seeing the moments we have as a country to rally around the flag. And obviously, both gold medal matches were incredible. But relative to the women's match specifically, I had a question because the Wisconsin Badgers were well represented in both Team USA and Team Canada. So what does Mark Johnson do? Also an Olympian, by the way, as a coach of the Badgers, to bring the women together after maybe a contentious Olympic two week period. To focus then on the national championship because the women Badgers are ranked number one in the country. Oh, I. I don't know if I'm. I. I'm gonna stay in my lane on that one. I'd have to research that a little bit, but, you know, thanks for posing the question there. Saturday, the Premier League title race heats up on NBC. And Peacock, It's Manchester City and they will take on Leeds United. It all kicks off live at 12:30 Eastern on NBC. And Peacock. Yes, Paul?
Paulie
I did get a question from two different people on social media about Todd in the hotel yesterday. Did he order food to be delivered? Did he buy food and bring it to his hotel? Did he go out to eat or other?
Todd
I stopped at Jersey Mike's on my way to the Milford Hotel, and I got one giant sandwich and one Regular. I ate the regular for dinner. The giant is waiting for me back at the hotel to have half for lunch and half for dinner. I brought rice cakes and peanut butter, cans of tuna. I brought enough that you would think that I'm like, moving into the hotel for a week. Got all kinds of goodies, Wheat Thins.
Dan Patrick
Are you staying tonight?
Todd
Staying one more night.
Dan Patrick
Okay.
Seton
All right.
Dan Patrick
Jim in Michigan. Hi, Jim. What's on your mind today? Hey, Dan. Of course. Yeah. Best of the weekend, the hockey. And I wasn't gonna even bring the dental thing up. Last week I had a tooth removed under anesthesia. And right when Jack took the high stick, my tongue went right back to the gap. And I'm like. And I was. I felt like such a baby. And they're like, are you feeling okay in the chair? And I mean, unbelievable. The thing that got overshadowed a little bit on Saturday night was the U of M and duke game, both 25 and two, you know, one and three. Is that going to bring Duke up or is U of. I'm going to fall back in, you know, college hoops. I have to look at it closer. Duke's going to be a one seed. Arizona is going to be a one seed. Houston might be a two seed. Florida, maybe two seed. UConn will be in the mix, but, yeah, I'd have to look at that. I've watched some basketball, but like, I watched the Illinois, UCLA game just because of the comeback. And I mean, that was, you know, you go coast to coast for the game winner Tim Brando with a great call there.
Paulie
Yeah, Paul, great games tonight. Louisville, North Carolina, Houston, Kansas, later. That's saucy. Nice on a Monday.
Dan Patrick
But the only reason why I tune in to watch Kansas is to see if Patterson plays like he's. He's the best first half player in America. And then all of a sudden he takes himself out. Can you. I don't know what the scouts would say about this. I don't. I don't have a source who's a scout in the NBA. But just like, is. Is he hurt? Does he just not want to play a lot? And even Bill Self, the head coach of Kansas, he's like, I didn't know he wanted to come out of the game. It. It just looks really bad. And he's really good, but, man, I'd have some doubts about that. Where you go? I don't know.
Todd
Yeah. Morv, you always talk about this with the Peterson situation. Does he love basketball or is. Is he just really good at it? Does he want to Be great. And I think what the Banca did over the weekend, playing all 40 minutes, was a real, like, juxtaposition to what Peterson's been doing, taking himself out of games. And if you're weighing who you're going to take number one overall, probably going to take the guy that wants to play.
Dan Patrick
I called him. Patterson, Peterson, yes. But he's got talent. I mean, real talent. But you just. You're watching. You're going, wait, is he hurt? And then I saw where the NCAA was investigating Kansas and him for taking himself out of games. Now, I don't know if this is gambling and maybe that's why they're investigating, but I just read where they're, like, curious why he's taking himself out of games. If. If he's a healthy scratch, they have a problem.
Todd
Yes, Marvin, but you know what? This is what college basketball needs. We're talking about it just like when we talked about college football. There's some issues, there's some controversies, but we're talking about college basketball.
Dan Patrick
I don't believe that any publicity is good publicity. I don't believe that. But it doesn't make you go, wait, let me tune in and watch this guy not play in the second half. You know, controversy, if it has to do with somebody actually playing the game itself, but he's not playing. So the con controversy is not. Not something that I'm watching. I can see, other than he just decides he wants to sit. Yeah. More.
Todd
But I think you might, because he's so good and so talented and he's widely regarded as a top three NBA draft pick. And so let's see.
Dan Patrick
So I'm tuning in to see how good he is when he plays.
Paulie
Should be an alert when he's playing
Todd
college. Kawhi.
Dan Patrick
Oh, careful, Kawhi's back.
Todd
He went off in the All Star.
Dan Patrick
He did.
Todd
Oh, he went off.
Dan Patrick
Did you see the picture where he gave high five to Kevin Durant? And you see Kawhi's ET fingers. And it is remarkable.
Todd
Thought that was my hand.
Al Michaels
That if.
Dan Patrick
If I put my hand up next to Marvin's. Oh, my goodness. It is like Kawhi's hands are it. You know those fake ones that you can put on? You can buy them at costume store. That's what it looks like. Yeah. Paulie.
Todd
Yeah.
Paulie
Durant's not spud Webb. He's 7 foot, has big hands. I'm looking at the picture. It does not look real.
Dan Patrick
His hands are there. I'd like to know what, how you know, the size, like if he went to the combine, he'd be drafted high. I'm going to guess they're, they're probably 12.
Seton
This is crazy.
Dan Patrick
Yes. Like 10 and a half is usually really huge hands. Or 11 maybe.
Seton
I mean, I think there's a, it's a little bit of an optical illusion maybe because Kevin Durant's fingers are a little more bent maybe. But his hand is massive. It's gigantic.
Dan Patrick
It would. He could cover. Man, oh man. Yeah. That's pretty crazy. Pretty crazy. Okay, take a break.
Seton
There's another one of his of Kawhi Leonard's hands next to Paul George.
Dan Patrick
Yeah.
Seton
It's like when you take the picture like you first have a child and you put your kid's hand in the palm of your hand and you sew how little it is. That's what Paul George looks like when he's shaking hands with Kawhi Leonard.
Dan Patrick
Yes, Todd, to what Marvin alluded to.
Todd
31 points in one quarter. Kawhi Leonard during the All Star game.
Dan Patrick

You can accomplish a lot in a decade. You could earn a bachelor's degree and a master's degree back to back. You could compete in two separate consecutive Olympic games. Well, we made my favorite murder. I spent 10 years of true crime, 10 years of conversation and 100 years of swearing. Here's the thing, everyone, politeness. Go yourself as someone sneezes. From now on, we have something for everyone. Advice, support and a safe space for your feelings. This is terrible. Keep going. Triflers need not apply. Stay out of the forest. You're in a cult. Call your dad. Don't worry, it gets worse. Toxic masculinity ruins the party again. I said, dad, what the hell? What are we going to do? And he goes, what the hell? I don't know we're going to Sally fourth Sally. We're going to sally forth. You guys stay sexy. Don't get murdered. Elvis, do you want a cookie? A cookie? Listen to my favorite murder on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts. Goodbye. Hi, I'm Liza Trager. And I'm Kara Klenk. We're comedians and your favorite overly invested SVU watchers. On that's Messed up, an SVU podcast, we recap iconic episodes, then talk to the stars who lived them. Like the legendary Matthew Lillard, who will never forget his time on svu.
Todd
I do remember the mustache.
Dan Patrick
I will get a meme of that mustache like every like six days, somebody
Todd
be like, what was this?
Podcast Narrator
Each week we cover the crimes, analyze the plot holes and insult the outfits. Benson goes to talk to Kelly to like tell her the news, but is wearing a beret not the time for a silly hat? Benson, what are you doing? New episodes drop every Tuesday on the exactly right network. Listen to that's messed up on iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Dun dun dun. On June 11, 1998, a deputy from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department went missing. It's an all out manhunt for John Ajay. Every search and rescue team in LA county has been called in to help. Within days, tips started flooding into the sheriff's department. The ruler around the drug scene was that a deputy was taken care of. Is this the story of a man who just got lost in the desert? Or of a cover up inside the nation's largest sheriff's department?
Dan Patrick
A homicide captain saying, detective, do not
Al Michaels
find out if this guy's guilty or innocent.
Dan Patrick
Who does that?
Podcast Narrator
Valley of Shadows, a new series from Pushkin Industries about crime and corruption in California's high desert. Do you have any advice for us while looking into this disappearance?
Al Michaels
I wouldn't do it alone.
Podcast Narrator
Listen to Valley of shadows on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts.
Al Michaels
Segregation in the day, integration at night.
Podcast Narrator
When segregation was the law, one mysterious black club owner had his own rules. We didn't worry about what was going on outside.
Dan Patrick
It was like stepping in another world.
Podcast Narrator
Inside Charlie's place, black and white people danced together. But not everyone was happy about it. You saw the kkk.
Dan Patrick
Yeah. They were dressed up in their uniform.
Al Michaels
The KKK set out to raid Charlie, take him away from here.
Dan Patrick
Charlie was an example of power. They had to crush him.
Podcast Narrator
From Atlas Obscura, Rococo Punch and visit Myrtle beach comes Charlie's Place, a story that was nearly lost to time. Until now. Listen to Charlie's place on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hey, everyone, it's Emily Simpson and Shane Simpson from the Legally Brunette podcast.
Dan Patrick
Each week, we're bringing you true crime
Seton
through a legal lens.
Podcast Narrator
Whether you want all the facts on the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie or you still need to wrap your head around the Diddy verdict, or we're breaking it all down step by step.
Paulie
And we're not just lawyers.
Seton
We're also husband and wife. It makes for some pretty entertaining episodes.
Podcast Narrator
Listen to Legally brunette on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Dan Patrick
More phone calls coming up, as we always do every Monday. Best and worst of the weekend. What you saw that you liked, you didn't like. Seton. Update the poll results of gold medal or Stanley Cup. If you have that.
Seton
Yeah, which would you rather win, a gold medal in the Olympics or the Stanley Cup? Right now, a gold medal has 58% of that vote.
Dan Patrick
Let's bring in Al Michaels, the Hall of Famer, Thursday Night Football on Prime. Look at you with your LA Kings hat.
Al Michaels
All right, it's hockey season. Come on. We have Panarin now from the Rangers. So here we go. We lost. We lost Fiala in the Olympics. But that's all the NHL talk. Let's go to the Olympics.
Dan Patrick
Okay, let me ask you the poll question. Would you rather win the Olympic gold or Stanley Cup?
Al Michaels
I'd probably rather win the Olympic gold, but if I was Ken Morrow, I might take the four Stanley Cups. Yeah, that he won with the New York Islanders in the wake of his gold medal in Lake Placid. But, I mean, there's nothing like an Olympic gold medal. That's. That's got to be at the very top.
Dan Patrick
You know, the first professional hockey game I saw in person was Ken Morrow's goal at Madison Square Garden. And my producer, who was from New York, says, just to let you know, not all hockey games are like this.
Al Michaels
No, they're not. You know, I was thinking last night, Dan, is hockey the only sport where at the end of the game, the fans are more exhausted than the players? It's. It's. I mean, and also, I keep thinking Jason Gay had a fantastic column in the Wall Street Journal, a number of them past couple of days. But the other day, he described hockey as croquet. For people who like running on the tops of speeding trains, it's perfect.
Dan Patrick
Gonna Take a little while. Visualize that. But, you know, but of all the sports, hockey always delivers more consistently than the other sports. When it comes to a big game. You know, game seven, playoff hockey, it. It's just. There is something about it that's different than every other sport, especially when it
Al Michaels
ends at like, 1:40 in the morning. We've seen a few of those games. It's phenomenal. The other thing about hockey is that it's. It's so continuous. I mean, I was texting with Doc Rivers, my old NBA partner and the Milwaukee coach yesterday, and I'm going, is anything better than hockey? And he goes, well, the NBA. I said, doc, I said, the last two minutes of a hockey game can take two minutes. The last two minutes of an NBA game. You need a calendar. He said, I know. And as I talk to Adam about it all the time, they got to fix that.
Dan Patrick
Did you do play by play at all when you're watching yesterday?
Al Michaels
Not really. I'm just, you know, I just enjoyed the game sitting back and, you know, being a fan. It's the edge of the sheet. I think Kenny did a tremendous job. Kenny Albert and Eddie Oldchick is. Is phenomenal. Eddie's the best. What did Eddie say yesterday? You know, when Brad Marchand, you know, who gets in in the face of the American team right in front of the bench. And Eddie was talking about how much Brad likes to talk, and he said he can talk a stamp off an envelope, which. A phenomenal line. Just great.
Dan Patrick
It doesn't seem like it was 46 years ago that you gave us Miracle on Ice.
Al Michaels
No way, man. No way. But it's, you know, comes and it goes. I mean, the story is still great. People still love the story. You know, it'll resonate, you know, for the rest of my life, clearly, and a lot of other people's lives. But it's. It was just. It could not be replicated, you know, that. Because that game was so much more than a hockey game. You. You needed to know nothing at all about hockey or care about hockey. That was all about us and our arch enemy, and we're actually playing with amateurs, and they're playing with, in effect, professionals in our, you know, home country. In a game where somebody asked me what, you know, DraftKings might have had that game at back in 1980, 50 to 1, 60 to 1, you name it, it was a massive upset. Massive.
Dan Patrick
But the fact that it wasn't for the gold and the amount of pressure that was now on Team USA that you can't come this far and you don't win the gold medal. But can you remember what that feeling was like or what these players talked about?
Al Michaels
Well, I remember vividly in. In the next game against Finland, Sunday morning in Lake Placid. They were down two to one end of the second period. And that's the famous Herb Brooks quote before they took the ice in the third period. If you lose this game, you'll take it to your effing grave. And he said it again. And the boys basically said, herb Brooks never swore, but that was the one time he swore. And if you think about something that rang so true, if those guys had gone through the rest of their lives and had lost the game to Finland, people would go, now let me get this straight. You beat the Soviets and you lost to Finland. So, you know, they came back and won the game, had a. Had a. You know, they had to kill a penalty toward the end of the third period, leading three to two, and got a shorthanded goal. So that was gigantic. People, you know, forget in those years. It wasn't like it is now, where you have a semifinal game and then the final. They had a round robin. We played the Soviets on Friday, Finland on Sunday, and Here we go, 46 years later.
Dan Patrick
But what would that have done to your call if they don't win the gold medal?
Al Michaels
Do you believe in debacles? I think. I think that's what the Soviet announcer must have said at the end of the Friday night. Oh, thank you. I think about that. I don't even want to think about that. None of those guys do. That would have been just horrendous.
Dan Patrick
Yeah.
Al Michaels
Horrendous.
Dan Patrick
Yeah. Did you have a backup call for. Do you believe in miracles, Dan?
Al Michaels
I walked over to the arena with the great late Ken Dryden that day, and I said to him, I said, kenny, we can only hope to keep an audience, that the game is something like three to one. No worse than three to one middle of the second period. Otherwise, knowing Run Arledge running ABC Sports in those days, he would have. He would have brought you in a women's ordinals or something, or, you know, ski flying or something, or ski jumping, they would have cut away from. From our game. So I had. There was no chance the US could win that game. None. Kenny and I had been out to the Soviet Union. He played against them. We saw them. We weren't a match for them. So when that game, you know, is 1, 1, 2, 2 3, 2 Soviets, then we get a tying goal, then a Ruzioni scores at the 10 minute mark of the. Now it's like, whoa. So I'm not thinking about anything to say at the end of the game because this is so, so crazy. This can't be happening. But at the end of the game, remember, the Soviets were putting intense pressure on the US And I'm just calling the game because that game could have ended with a goal by the Soviets or a great save by Jim Cray. So I don't have in my mind, I can't think of something to say because I'm going to call that game right to the very end. And I got very lucky when the puck came out to center ice with about five seconds to play. And now I knew the Soviets couldn't mount another attack. And the word that came into my head was miraculous. It got morphed into a question and an answer. I had no idea of the impact of what I said or even what I said at the end of the game. I was working in such an intense state of concentration. But here we are. It's, you know, I guess it's putting pretty good code on the game.
Dan Patrick
Did you ever hear the Soviets call?
Al Michaels
Well, that might have been the Debacles call. No, I never, I never heard that call.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, I haven't either. I'm curious though, how that. Because of the importance of hockey and you're a hockey power and sure, you know, people pay a price in some of these countries when they disappoint. And I'd be curious how the Russian announcer called that.
Al Michaels
I think he had to be shunned. First of all, they never lost. So people also forget that the Soviets down by a goal and putting the pressure on in the American end, never even pulled the Goldie because they probably never practiced it. Oh, well, they don't lose.
Dan Patrick
Yeah.
Al Michaels
So they could have had a 6 on 5 at the end of the game. But you know, you know, Dan, so, so many things I'm thinking about this morning too. So when I'm a kid in, in the 50s and 60s in New York and I love the Rangers and in the NHL in those years, there were like two or three or four guys born in America. And in 1980, I think I looked it up, there were like 8% of the rosters were American born. Now it's 3, 30%. So what 80 did, and I think what yesterday did is it's, it makes kids more excited. More kids are going to play hockey now because of what took place yesterday. Wow, look at this. And they play it all around the country now. And again, when I was a kid, the number one draft choice in the NHL would always be a kid born in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, or in Northern Manitoba. But one of the seminal moments to me was, was the American captain, Austin Matthews, who was drafted number one by the Toronto Maple Leafs about 10 years ago and, you know, played extremely well in the Olympics. Auston Matthews grew up in Scottsdale, Arizona. That's a long way from Moose Jaw's catch on. So that's where the sport of hockey is coming is great.
Dan Patrick
We're talking to Al Michael, Al Michaels, the Hall of Famer. It's almost like what the Dream Team did to the rest of the basketball world, maybe the 1980 Olympic hockey team, what that did to U.S. hockey.
Al Michaels
Oh, for sure. No question. Because, I mean, even Jeremy Roenick, who went into the hall of Fame, had a great NHL career. Jeremy said that he would watch that tape and that would inspire him to play hockey and be a great hockey player. And I'm sure he's not, he's not alone in that regard. So there's no question that, that in 1980, that made a lot of, a lot of kids more interested in playing. I thought HBO did a fantastic documentary in 2001 that helped. Miracle came out in 2004 with Kurt Russell. That certainly helped because all the kids have now seen that. And now what you have. By the way, Netflix has a documentary which has been out about two weeks called Miracle the Boys of 80, which is phenomenal. They brought all the guys back to Lake Placid, you know, four and a half decades later. And, you know, you see parts of the game, obviously, but you hear about those guys and their lives and what that meant to them. It's, it's a phenomenal documentary.
Dan Patrick
Netflix, did you save notes from the Miracle on Ice?
Al Michaels
You know, I, I, I, I think I have some in a folder, probably in a storage bin or something. But I, you know, I, I didn't have that many notes. I just, you know, you did it on the fly, so. And we were doing a lot of games, so I had to know all of those other teams too. Norway, Sweden, Czechoslovakia, who we beat in that game. But I had done, you know, and people said, well, how did you get all those names down? I said, hold on a second. I started my career in Hawaii doing a number of sports, including high school basketball, where if you had five Samoans on a fast break and the ball is loose and it's going back, I said, believe me, that paid off in the Adirondacks for me.
Dan Patrick
How many More hockey games did you do after the 80 Olympics?
Al Michaels
After the 80 Olympics, I did. Well, I did the 84 Olympics. We did, but our team wasn't very good. So Kenny Dryden and I did those games, but we. They would, you know, come to us for like 15 minutes at a clip because we were always losing. And then in 88, I did it again in Calgary, but we weren't very good. So it wasn't. It bore no semblance to Lake Placid. And then when ABC got the NHL rights in the mid-90s, Dennis Swanson asked me to do a couple of games. So I did two Kings Calgary playoff games, I think, in 93. And then I wanted to do Wayne Gretzky before he retired. So the Kings were playing in Chicago. I always wanted to do a game at Chicago Stadium. And that's it. That's it. So I've done a handful of games, but I love hockey and, you know, I'll be there. I want to see Connor McDavid in person. So that's Thursday night, Edmonton at the Kings. I'll be there.
Dan Patrick
How many hockey games had you done prior to the 80 Olympics?
Al Michaels
1. 1972, I think I told you. I've told you this story about I'm on a staff, remember, It's, I'm the kid on the staff. It's Mount Rushmore, Howard Cosell, Jim McKay, Keith Jackson, Frank Gifford, Bill Fleming. I'm the kid, so what am I? I wanted speed skating because Eric Haydn was going to be the big star and he did win the five gold medals. But they gave that to Keith Jackson and they gave me hockey. And I said, you know, I'm thinking Winter Olympics. It's always good to have an indoor sport. Right. For starters. So. And I loved hockey and I was the one guy on that staff. Nobody else had done the game. I had done one game, and I knew what icing and offside were, and that's how I wound up getting that assignment in Lake Placid. And that's as that.
Dan Patrick
Would you rather be Mike Aruzioni or Jack Hughes?
Al Michaels
Oh, it's interesting. Well, this morning, probably Jack Hughes.
Dan Patrick
Yeah.
Al Michaels
But over the course of time. Michael Ruzioni. I heard you before. You guys have a. A poll going on where you'd rather be used, Me or Kurt Russell?
Dan Patrick
Yeah.
Al Michaels
Well, I'm going to take whatever votes I get and I'm going to. I'm going to apportion them to Aruzioni, Craig and her Brooks. Yeah, there you go. There you go.
Dan Patrick
Yeah.
Al Michaels
If elected I will not serve. What can I tell you?
Dan Patrick
And I don't. I mean, Jack Hughes probably doesn't even realize how big this is. That, you know, this is one of those viral moments. This is. This is forever. That look, that deal, his teeth being chipped, you know, dropped in the flag. Your brother's there, you know, the Goodreau moment. I mean, it was. It was movie, like the interview with Katherine Tappan.
Al Michaels
How was that? How great is that? You know, at a time when so much is politicized and, you know, and people are going this way and that way, and a lot of people are going, I don't want to hear that. And. And what Jack Hughes said at the end of the game I thought was phenomenal. Couldn't have scripted that, you know, how much it meant to him, how much it meant to being part of this country and the affiliation that he has, you know, and what it means.
Dan Patrick
It was.
Al Michaels
I mean, you're right. You couldn't have. Couldn't have put that in a movie. But the question now is, does Kurt Russell. Does he play Mike Sullivan in the next movie or what? You know, this thing goes on and on, doesn't it?
Dan Patrick
Yeah, it does. 46 years ago.
Al Michaels
46. Holy. Whoa. It's insane. Everything's 46 years ago to me now. It's wild. You know, you and I, we live in our love of Johnny Bench. And I announced, you know, for the Reds, and you were such a fan. So this year, this past baseball season, there was a game that had ended on catchers interference 54 years ago. And I'm going, wow, that's a long time ago. Maybe, you know, Bill Dickey played in the game or something. And I looked it up and I said, wait a minute, I did that game and Johnny was the guy. 1971 Red Shit Dodgers. That's the game. I called you and I said, johnny, this is insanity.
Dan Patrick
I couldn't help but think about how close Canada came to winning yesterday and how close Toronto came to winning the World Series.
Al Michaels
No question. Yeah. And think about, you know, how about how close Seattle came to advancing in baseball, right? And what a tough loss that was for the Mariners. And then at least, you know, the Seahawks were able to. To. To get their championship. But, I mean, but it's. It's hockey. And it's like I say, you're exhausted because you. You almost score. They almost score. And this goes for. For 60 minutes of. Of action. So. And the CR. And then the double post. And I'm thinking that, you know, Kenny or Or Eddie could have called it. You know what? What? Chris Collinsworth called the Cody Parky field goal. That was a double doink yesterday. That could have won the game. That's sports. That's why we love sports, right?
Dan Patrick
Dan, you playing golf today?
Al Michaels
Course is closed. You want to talk to the groundskeeper? It's Monday. It's Monday. I'm. I'm not happy. First of all, what do I need to, you know, my. My list of swing thoughts, right? So I showed it to Rory Mac. I showed him to Rory McElroy a couple of years ago. He goes, what?
Dan Patrick
I told you, it's Johnny.
Al Michaels
Johnny Miller.
Dan Patrick
That's it.
Al Michaels
Four syllables, right? Johnny Miller. But the problem I have is I go back. Johnny,
Dan Patrick
Thank you for sharing as always, Danny.
Al Michaels
Anytime. Every 46 years, we'll do this.

We'll try.

June 11, 1998, a deputy from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department went missing. It's an all out manhunt for John Ajay. Every search and rescue team in LA county has been called in to help. Within days, tips started flooding into the sheriff's department. They ruler around the drug scene. Was that a deputy was taken care of. Is this the story of a man who just got lost in the desert? Or of a cover up inside the nation's largest sheriff's department?

Arizona beat Houston on Saturday. So Arizona has won two in a row after opening the season with 23 consecutive wins before they lost back to back games. But the number one and number two teams lost on the same day for the first time since February of 2025. So almost a year ago to the day, Duke Downs, Michigan and Arizona beating Houston. So I gotta get, I gotta get ready for college basketball here. I've, I've watched, but I haven't really watched to fill out my bra. Maybe it's better. I, I think I, I, I watch too much and I know too much and then I second guess myself and then I inevitably finish near the bottom. I got, you know, and it's always somebody says, oh, I'm going to pick this team because I like their colors or their mascot. And I'm going, I'm breaking down their second team. Yes, Marvin.
Todd
And look at their senior guard play.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, it's all about senior guard play. I don't know how many teams have senior guards first. Senior guard play. Yes, Marv.
Todd
If they do, how many teams have they played for to become a senior?
Dan Patrick
Yeah. Yes, Todd.
Todd
You could do what I do, which is extremely lame. Go with 31 seeds at a 2 or all 41 seeds. You'll probably finish in the top 10,
Dan Patrick
but it works for you.
Todd
But it's lame though. You got to take more chance.
Dan Patrick
I know. Reggie Miller will join us on the program tomorrow. We'll see if Reggie has any solutions to tanking. Time to play guess the snowball and snowfall game, is it a, a cyclone bomb or bomb Cyclone.
Seton
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
David, did we have one of those? Is it official now?
Paulie
Very exciting. It's been upgraded from a hurricane or a blizzard to a bomb cyclone. Congratulations.
Dan Patrick
Okay, how do you get to bomb cyclone?
Paulie
I looked it up and it's called bombogenesis. This is a real word, I think.
Dan Patrick
Okay.
Paulie
A rapidly intensifying storm that occurs when central air pressure drops by at least 24 millibars within 24 hours. So it's an intense winter storm with cold arctic arctic air and warm ocean air. And that ramps up the miles per hour of the wind.
Dan Patrick
Okay. Hence a bomb cyclone. Todd randomly brought up the northern Iowa guard Brookmanes Ali for Farouk Manesh. So I'm watching a basketball game. Was that yesterday?
Todd
You texted us? Colorado State against somebody.
Dan Patrick
I took a Picture of him on the sidelines, and it was like, okay. I didn't know that he was coaching, but he, of course, was the star for Northern Iowa. Ali Farouk Mane.
Todd
You're watching Colorado State against San Diego State, the Rams and Aztecs. What else are you going to do with your time?
Dan Patrick
I. I live the life, man. Yeah. What are you watching? Colorado State basketball. Are you getting paid? No, I'm just watching. This Day in Sports History.
Paulie
Paul Farouk Minesh, famous for taking down Kansas in the tournament.
Al Michaels
Yeah.
Paulie
With that shot. This Day in sports history. 1983, Herschel Walker signs a $5 million deal with the USFL's New Jersey Generals.
Dan Patrick
I'm at that press conference. Yeah, I went to that press conference.
Paulie
1987, Nate McMillan of the SuperSonics, 25 assists versus the Clippers.
Todd
What?
Dan Patrick
That Bob Knight, 1985, throws a chair on the court against Purdue. Also 1980, Eric Haydn. He won all five speed skating events at Lake Placid. And I think he's still a doctor. That guy's a show off, you know? Come on. And remember the. They had the five gold medals around him. That was a big deal. You know, it was. It was speed skating. But you get caught up. Like Dan Jansen. You got caught up in it. You don't normally care about it, but you care about the story. And the fact that he was going for five after, you know, Mark Spitz having seven back in 72. Yes, Todd.
Todd
And he had a scalpel and a stethoscope.
Dan Patrick
He did not.
Todd
You know, all that has to be in the picture.
Dan Patrick
You're better than that.
Al Michaels
A little bit.
Dan Patrick
You're actually.
Al Michaels
I'm not.
Dan Patrick
Let's go around the room, see if we learned anything on the program. Todd, all unfortunately start with you.
Todd
Perhaps Team Canada has a better overall team than Team usa, But the red, white and blue got it done when it mattered most for hockey gold. Cantada is what I'm calling.
Dan Patrick
Oh, Canada.
Todd
All right.
Dan Patrick
Okay. Been sitting on that one for a while, Satan.
