We'll do that next. But we talked about today is the anniversary of Michael Jordan's Rookie of the Year Award 40 years ago, 1985. Speculating on why he's getting into the booth or is he just doing interviews again? Special contributor, he's getting into the booth. NBA on NBC. Vince Carter's involved. I think they're really trying to pull those nostalgic strings. For sure. They brought back the Voice, the Fagin dude. They brought back Sean Tesh. Basketball, Rich's favorite song, Basketball.

And you bring back Michael Jordan. It's, it's huge. It really is. It's huge. And we're not used to seeing him in that light. And I still think he's still going to be very protected. These are those few times where I miss living in New York City. I love living in Los Angeles. The weather, the vibe. I do like the energy. The energy. New York, though. Yeah, man. Especially this weekend with the Subway series, Knicks playoff basketball. So east coast, really fun time right now. But there's an anniversary that I know you wanted to bring up because I agree with you. This is a moment that sort of changed the trajectory of a player's vibe life.

[Danny G]

I don't know if there's any truth to that.

[Steve Covino]

I think there is, but it's sort.

[Danny G]

Of the theory of when Mike Tyson got knocked out by Buster Douglas, he was never the same guy, right? He just wasn't. Sometimes things change.

[Steve Covino]

You did he lose? He lost his fighting guts.

[Danny G]

I lost my fighting guts.

[Steve Covino]

I always love that quote. I lost my fighting guts.

[Danny G]

I did that. I just lost my fighting guts. So something happened 2016. Yesterday, May 15, 2016. So I was thinking about it. I'm like, yeah, man, that dude was never the same. It was when Jose Bautista got popped in the face by Rufnett o' Door, an unassuming dude. Roof Ned, you would have never thought that this guy had a mean. Right? Because Jose Bautista at the time was such a beast. So intimidating. Bat flipping, hitting bombs. I think he shaved at 8am and had a beard by 9am every day. He always had that shadow going on. He's a man's man. Hitting bombs, little roof nettle door pops him and embarrasses him and he's never the same. It happens to people. And I think that's what happened. Look, prior to 2016, by the way.

[Steve Covino]

There was more action in that little scuffle than all of boxing. Last week when it was Fatal Fury, when it was Fatal Fury and the Canelo fight the next day, there was more action in the roofnet odor Bautista scuffle back on this day, you know.

[Danny G]

Again, it happens to players. It happens to the best of them. In 2015, just to give a perspective, let me hit up my guy Elias from the sports bureau. Actually, baseball reference, which I love.

[Steve Covino]

What, What Year was the punch.

[Danny G]

2016. So in 2015 he hit 40 bombs, 114 home runs. Just dominant, right? 2016, 22 home runs. Then the next year 23. So he had one more, but after that, 13, 2, 9. Just the shell of the guy he once was. Now maybe it's injury, maybe it's something else, but maybe he just lost his fighting guts and he was never the same dude. That happens. Life hits you sometimes in the face.

[Steve Covino]

You could argue that. Well, he was 35 when he got popped in the face. But he went from. You're right. A guy hitting 40 home runs and 114 ribbies and an all star. A top 10 MVP candidate that year. Within a couple years he was on three teams in one season, all in the NL east, by the way, Braves, Mets and Phillies. And he combined for 13 home runs and 40 something ribbies and he batted 203.

[Danny G]

Never the same guy. Coincidence. And how about Tim Anderson? Remember when Jose Ramirez was there and Tim Anderson thought he was the the guy and he's there and he squares up and. And Jose Ramirez like pop, pop. He falls back. You think Tim Anderson was ever the same guy?

[Steve Covino]

Ever since that field of dreams moment, the walk off home run where he was the hero for the first ever field of dreams game.

[Danny G]

Ever since then it's been sort of a trickle downward. That's it, man. So you know, when life hits you in the face like that, you gotta, as my mom would say, pick yourself up by the bootstraps. I'm like, mom, I don't have them. But I think I know what you mean. You can't let it beat you like that. Because we've seen time and time again in the world of fighting, in the world of sports, something happens, usually injury, and you're never the same. But sometimes it's not injury, sometimes it's humiliation. It's in your head, it's mental. And you're just not the same guy. Again, we're just speculating on what happened to Jose Bautista. I don't know if there's any truth to that, but when you do the math and you remember that moment, you're like de. It popped all the mojo out of his body.

[Steve Covino]

I love the Mike Tyson analogy because I think Mike thought he was invincible. Until Buster Douglas, we all thought he was invincible. Jose Bautista gets knocked in the face by little roof netto door. And I, I'm glad you brought up to Tim Anderson because I, I'm not going to assign it the time he got popped, but Tim Anderson was A guy that was a batting title champion, batting champ in 2019. Let me give you these batting averages.335.322. 309, 301. And then all sudden right now with the Angels batting.197 and, like, non existent in this, and he's like, not even a conversation.

[Danny G]

I hate to tie it together with a life example, but we're talking about guys getting hit in the face, right? Punched in the face publicly for the world to see. Humiliating. Hard to live with. You wake up the next day, like, did that really happen? Everybody's talking about it, Social media, nobody.

[Steve Covino]

Sort of like it.

[Danny G]

Sort of like you have to answer all these questions.

[Steve Covino]

It's sort of like when you're at a party or a work event and you're the person that has too many drinks and you wake up the next morning, oh, my God, what did I say that I'm doing?

[Danny G]

Embarrassment.

[Steve Covino]

Oh, no.

[Danny G]

But life hits people in the face the same exact way. And some people never recover. It's the truth. It could be a death of somebody, and it's understandable. It could be the loss of a job, it could be a divorce. It could be anything. Your puppy dies, and for whatever reason, that person's never the same. Understandable. But you gotta do your best to not let that happen to you. Tim Anderson. Never the same guy. Jose Bautista on this date, never the same guy. Rufnid o Door changed that path.

[Steve Covino]

You guys want to hear something funny about Rufnid Odor?

[Danny G]

Such a badass.

[Steve Covino]

A real dude from Venezuela. He has, like, a ranch down there.

[Danny G]

Yeah, he signed a contract with the.

[Steve Covino]

Rangers, I don't know, a couple years ago.

[Danny G]

He had a lot of money, and he also got two horses as part of the deal. So it's like, yes, I want my.

[Steve Covino]

Money, but that's like something from, like, the 1600s.

[Danny G]

Like, I require two horses as part.

Of my contract and throw in a couple ponies, see?

[Danny G]

Oh, and by the way, you know what else is very similar with the Tim Anderson story and the Bautista story? Both dudes that got the best of them were like little unassuming dudes. I'm not saying Rufnet Odor wasn't a rough guy, wasn't a tough guy, but.

[Steve Covino]

He was a small guy.

[Danny G]

Yeah, he was a small, scrappy dude. Right. He played on the Yankees, so I got to watch Roof Ned and Jose Ramirez. Like, I just didn't see that coming from him when Tim. And because Tim Anderson was larger than life. He was. He was the Guy, Man. Humiliating. But you got to get past that stuff. And the anniversary was this. It was yesterday. That happened in 2016. That punch heard around the world. He never flipped the bat the same way again. He just didn't. The mojo was out. So he was exposed in a weird way.

Yeah.

[Danny G]

Your thoughts? As we sell. I guess we celebrate that day, but I think.

[Steve Covino]

I don't think Batista celebrated celebrating.

[Danny G]

I mean, dude still had a stellar career. Let's. You know what? Let's give him props before we.

I think. Was he out of the base for the last couple years? It's part of the Angels problem. They need more hitting.

Sometimes that little guy, sometimes that little guy is waiting for that. One of my best friends in my life growing up. This a kid I went to high school with. Elementary school. We both went to Syracuse for college. My buddy Mike Lozito lives in upstate New York. I know. We're on up there. He's five foot four, best. He's a little guy. One of my buddies. A short guy.

I'm sure he's pumped that you're talking about it nationwide.

[Steve Covino]

Fun fact. He was actually Otto the Orange at Syracuse. He was the mascot. He's not.

[Danny G]

Why don't you give out his address while you're at it.

[Steve Covino]

He's not a big guy. But my point is, I remember there was a kid on the playground that was sort of, you know, being a little bit of a jerk to him. Okay. We were little kids.

[Danny G]

Yeah.

And we're talking.

Is it one of the O' Doyles?

[Steve Covino]

It might as well been an O' Doyle. O' Doyle rules. O' Doyle rules. This kid was probably 6 foot in sixth grade. Yeah, little Mike Lozito was like, give me back my kickball. And the guy's like, no. Little Michael Zito was like little Mac from Tyson's punch out like, yo, knocked this kid on his ass.

And I remember he hit the star button. He got him with a nice right hook.

[Steve Covino]

And I just remember thinking to myself, yo, no one ever looked at that big guy the same again. Because he was vulnerable. He was vulnerable. And it was like, yo, my buddy Mike. Little guy had the huevos. And you know, you got to give.

I think that we forget that the Cowboys have been so mediocre for so long now. When you think of that Cowboys dynasty, you know how it's one of those things where the whole joke is when you think 30 years ago. You're like, oh, 30 years ago, the 70s. And it's like, nope, 30 years ago. It's the 90s. We forget that. The Cowboys and Jimmie Johnson and Barry Switzer and Aikman and Michael Irvin and Emmett Smith. That team. That's 30 years ago.

[Danny G]

Yeah, 93, 94, maybe the six. The dynasty needs to join NBC and be a contributor.

[Steve Covino]

Dude, the last time they were relevant, we were listening to basketball. Michael Jordan was winning. The last time the Cowboys were relevant.

[Danny G]

In the National Football League grunge.

[Steve Covino]

Yeah. You had your Nirvana CD and you were listening to Stone Temple Pilots, and you were the Smashing Pumpkin.

[Danny G]

Rich was listening to CNC Music Factory, Everybody dance. You were buying CDs from Columbia House for a penny.

[Steve Covino]

And because it's been so long, I know it's fun to hate on the Cowboys. Props to, like, guys like Stephen A. Smith who have so much fun with it. Fun to hate on the boys. Fun to love them, I guess. But in an interview with the athletic Fox executives, a Fox executive, Michael Moville Hill, admitted that the network was actually comfortable letting go of some of the Cowboy games to, quote, diversify the late afternoon window. Maybe showcase guys like Jaden Daniels of the Commanders. Maybe your super bowl champs, the Eagles. Maybe, as you know, now the Fox and CBS contracts, you could dip into the AFC and nfc, maybe highlight some other teams and players. Yet the NFL and Fox and everyone agreed.

[Danny G]

I'm glad you said players, too, because you're talking about the cowboys from 30, 40 years ago.

[Steve Covino]

Yeah.

[Danny G]

We live in a time of fantasy sports where people do love players just as much as they love teams, if not more, maybe because of fantasy sports and gambling and everything else.

[Steve Covino]

So when I. When I say that they still have six primetime games, second only to the Chiefs, the Kansas City Chiefs. Rightfully so. Kelsey Mahomes, the dynasty that's going on there, the Chiefs. You mean America's team. Thank you, Patrick. Yep.

[Danny G]

You mean America's team. You know, super bowl champions.

Former.

[Danny G]

But again, you'll see.

[Steve Covino]

So when you look at that and say, all right, Chiefs 7 makes sense. But the Lions, the Commanders, the packers, other. Other teams that show a lot of promise and heart, they're saying at Fox, they were willing to say, let's drop some of those Cowboys games and put on other young star players. But at the end of the day, they stuck with the Cowboys with six primetime games, second only to the Chiefs. Do they deserve it? Do you want to see it? Do you think the Cowboys are still the draw? Because what they're saying is this Thanksgiving Day game?

[Danny G]

No, I think people, more people watch just to hate on them at this point.

[Steve Covino]

Laugh like Stephen A. Like I said.

Exactly. If you take the temperature of social media, it's just people love to watch to watch them be mediocre.

[Steve Covino]

But when you say Thanksgiving, Thanksgiving day.

[Danny G]

That middle of the day, Eagles.

No, no, no. Thanksgiving is Chiefs.

[Danny G]

Oh, Chiefs, Cowboys.

Chiefs, Cowboys. So if you do get Chiefs, Cowboys, they're saying it could be the highest rated regular season game of all time.

If Creed performs halftime. Again, that was my theory because Creed performed halftime Thanksgiving in Dallas in 2001 and it was magnificent.

So ask yourself this, do you still want to see the Cowboys every couple weeks in that primetime Fox game of the week with my dude Kevin Burkhart and Tom Brady? I want to see Monday night or Sunday night Football. It's the Cowboys. Like, do you want that anymore?

I think the question is, are they still America's team? Do they still have that, that reputation? They might have that, that title, but are they really? Clearly not if they don't want to air their games.

I can't tell you a how much of an honor it is to fill in for Dan Patrick, a guy we grew up listening to and watching here on Fox Sports Radio, Covino and Rich. And I can't also tell you how proud I am of my daughter. My daughter Emmy turns eight today. It's her birthday. And at her school, I'm proud of her, too.

She's been able to put up with you for eight years.

Here's the best part. This. Honestly, this made me almost shed a tear. She's eight. It's her birthday at school, and at her school, it's Rams day. They have some of the personnel and a couple players go to her school. They have the Rams mascot, and I'm a Niners fan. They handed out a Rams T shirt to all the kids. My daughter refused to wear it.

Come on.

She goes, I'm a Niners fan, and I. My wife just called me to jokingly tell me that, and she's like, my daughter said, I'll turn it inside out. For real. I. Wow. Honestly, makes me really like that is. That's my girl. I ask you, if you were at school as a little kid and they said, oh, the Red Sox are here, would you have wore a Red Sox shirt?

[Danny G]

Never. No, seriously. No. The only Boston shirt I ever had, I said, boston sucks.

[Steve Covino]

That's the truth.

[Danny G]

Yes, it's the truth. It's the truth. But the only time we chip off the old blockhead. I'm proud of her, too. Yeah, we make the one exception 49ers fan.

[Steve Covino]

We make the one exception. If your child plays for that team, your kid takes precedence over anything. If little Junio Covino played for the Red Sox, you'd be a Red Sox fan.

[Danny G]

Yeah, that's it.

But. But besides that, no way in hell. So when I said when my wife told me my daughter's like, I'm not wearing a Ram shirt. Oh, dude, I love her even more.

The question is, are the Cowboys still America's team? If Fox is saying, hey, maybe less Cowboys, but the NFL saying, we're still giving you six primetime games, but they're willing to give some up, it shows you clearly they're not. Ratings are still good, but people love to Hate on the Cowboys and laugh the Cowboys.

[Steve Covino]

By that. By that. You know that metric. Are they still America's team? If they're the most hate loved, if.

[Danny G]

If they're is any. Here's my theory on this. If anybody's America's team, again, it's all about new fans, young fans and marketing to the younger audience. It's the Chiefs. I hate to say it, but it is. Even though they didn't win last year, it's still Mahomes, it's still Kelsey, still the Chiefs. It's still that dynasty. The reason we hold on to the Cowboys is because of their 90s dynasty. That was a long time ago. A real long time ago. Feels a long time ago. 93, 94, 96. Can I before that? What? 70. So again, the Cowboys mean something to us, but to a younger generation, they've done nothing. So if there's any team that's America's team, it's the Chiefs. At least that's my theory. And we also live in a time where players, people root for players, not so much the teams like we used to. And I think that's why we're seeing that shift. And I also think when I say the Chiefs, if any team, I say that loosely because I think it's up for grabs. It's not the Eagles. People hate the Eagles. Unless you're an Eagles fan. Yeah. You would admire and acknowledge what they did. Yeah, that's cool. But the Chiefs were so close to dynasty. Patrick Mahomes has such star power. If there's any team, it's them. But I do think it's up for grabs. And that's kind of cool. Hey, NFL, it's up for grabs. Who's really America's team? Who's taking that title? I think it's anybody's. That's my theory on that. Because the Cowboys luster, luster. It's not really them anymore. Not to younger people. And that's the future of who's watching the NFL.

Can I give you like a sad fact about the Cowboys? For as.

[Danny G]

Dude, where have all the Cowboys gone? For as a. I'll give you a sad fact. You ever see Paula Cole's video? She had hairy armpits.

[Steve Covino]

Oh, my God. Yeah. Whereabout Cowboys gone? They saw Paula Cole.

[Danny G]

Yeah, they all. They all ran when he saw her armpits.

What do you think the longest NFC or AFC championship drought is? Not winning being in the game. Now I'll tell you. In the afc, it's the Miami Dolphins. In the nfc, you would Think of all the bunk teams you could think of. You'll go, maybe. Oh, no. They made all this team. Dallas Cowboys, 29 years. Longest NFC drought to not make the NFC Championship game. So America's team. America's team has the worst playoff success. If you look at it that way.

[Danny G]

It's almost how, you know, how we have this. This idea of certain brands and certain things. Because they were prestigious when we were kids. Like a Lincoln Continental.

[Steve Covino]

Yeah.

[Danny G]

Crisco. Yeah. Like a kid today is like, yeah, whatever. That's weak.

[Steve Covino]

You don't get shortening. Yeah.

[Danny G]

You're like, yeah, but it used to be, like, really cool. I was like, that's the epitome of awesome. That's how kids feel about. The Cowboys are Cowboys. They haven't done anything in my lifetime. We're still holding on to the past. So they're not. To answer the question, they're not America's team. And we're finally moving past that.

[Steve Covino]

You know, listen, you get a new head coach, you're going to give him a couple years to see how it pans out. Bri, you're a big Saints fan, right? So you. This. This is near and dear to you.

Like, I don't know. I don't think they're going to. I have no faith in them. I actually. They could be like the new lions. Just go 0 and 16. Not gonna lie. But you know what? You also got to remember, division is the most important thing, and that division does nothing for me. So Baker Mayfield doesn't get you excited?

[Danny G]

He does me.

[Steve Covino]

Yes. There you go for Covino. But I feel like the Saints, when you're in a division that's not that great, you're only a year or two away from rebuilding the NFL. The parody, as I love to say, the parody in the NFL is unbelievable. You could stink. And two years later, you could be, you know, you can be competing the right coach. Look what Jim Harbaugh did for the Niners back in the day. They were 3 and 13. The next year, they were 13 and 3. So you could turn things around quick with the right draft picks and a young quarterback he got now, so. And a division where it's like, if Baker Mayfield's the. The star of your division, I think you have a shot in the next couple years to make some move.

Our new quarterback is like 30 years old, so it's not really a great thing. Tyler schuck is like 28 or something. He's insane.

[Danny G]

I hear good things about him.

I think he's a bit of a sleeper.

You know, I didn't really watch too many Thunder games this year, and I always kind of respected them until I watched this series and I just started kind of seeing, like, you know, I thought the whole, you know, the league had kind of fixed the foul Merchant, James Harden era, if you will.

And now I'm watching SGA and I actually call him foul Merchant Alexander because I'm just watching him and I just moving around and he's just running in the guys and just trying to get this file. And the best thing officers can do is he does what he can to make contact and get to the line, and it's just like, really, it's just. It makes the league hard to watch, man. And I want to watch the games.

I also own Advantage Nuggets on that. Morgan. Morgan, with that championship pedigree that they have, along with Russell Westbrook as a spark plug on this team and Jamal Murray and Yokos just playing the way they're supposed to play. But if you got Yokich hitting 29 points and they're. They're playing the way they should, they're going to win.

[Steve Covino]

I mean, I don't know about that. I just think that SGA to. To. To answer what Morgan's was getting at, they're not. There's a reason why he's a superstar, yet no one really wants to see that team in it because they're. They're lacking something. I. I don't know how you could say a guy like that is not exciting, because I guess he is. But I don't know. There's. There's something that's not connecting with that team, with the public. Because if you ask most people, who do you want to see in the NBA Finals, they're going to say Knicks, T Wolves, or let's see what the Nugget can the Nuggets win another one against the Knicks? Seem to be what people want out of the east and out of the west with what's left, I think the T Wolves and Anthony Edwards. There's sometimes stars that connect, right? Like I love. I love Mike Trout in Major League Baseball, but he's one of those guys that never connects. There's some guys that are so good, but they don't connect.
