They were until they met the Patriots in the Super Bowl. Like, if you're going to say greatest offense. I'm sure he's joking, right? Because I think, you know, greatest show on turf. Other nicknames, we take pride in it. It's the way we've been practicing. The Cowboys offense finished second. Total offense. The Rams were the only team with a better offense. Dallas seventh in scoring and they have their entire starting offense back this season. Yeah, I've been saying that if they get a top 15 defense, I think they're going to be a force in the playoffs. I do. And it's not just for clicks because I'd go out of my way to not talk about the Cowboys, but that offense. 4,000 yard passer, 1,000 yard rusher and two receivers who had a thousand yards. And you have a good tight end as well. Yeah, Pauling.

So Dak Prescott says he and his offensive players, the skill position players each year have like an off site hangout. And they went to Park City, Utah, and when they were hanging out, they came out with the nickname.

I don't think it's a great nickname. Greatest offense there is. But they're calling themselves Gotti. All right, so, okay, got. I. I'm. I'm okay with that now. If you win, this is great. An ambulance came. They took him out. I don't know what happened to him, but it was like, hey, are those seats taken? Yeah, he's. He's here. He's lying on him right now. Might have a update on Tony Romo's situation with cbs. Trying to sort through the information that I have. I'll give that to you as soon as I get an opportunity. Matt Barrows, he covers the 49ers for the Athletic. He's been covering the team since 2003. Matt, thanks for joining us on short notice. How would you describe the last two weeks around this team?

[Matt Barrows]

Hectic. That would be the way I would start it. It seems like there's a big news item every moment here, including last night with, with Debo Samuel, the big one, and I'm sure you want to ask me about it is, is the Kyle Shanahan accident crash and that's obviously still looming over the team right now. I don't think he's going to be back at practice today in full and we really don't know exactly when he's going to kind of resume his everyday duties.

[Dan Patrick]

Okay. It just feels like we keep adding to the mystery of this. Why, why isn't this just a cut and dried story that coach gets injured, car accident, non life threatening injuries. We'll let you know when he's going to be back at practice. Couldn't it just exist like that from the beginning?

[Matt Barrows]

It, yeah, it should have if the team had kind of disclosed it on what was it, July 14th where it happened. But I think when you don't do that and there were some things out of their control that happened. For example, the Palo Alto pd and this is part of the same issue I think, and not disclosing things and kind of creating a problem because of that. The Palo Alto PD does not handle accident reports like, like crime reports. They're not public information. So they didn't disclose the accident report. They still haven't to this point. So it's not available. It's not like you could go down there and you know like a, like a good reporter and check the police logs and you would have found it. It, it didn't exist and the only way it became public was when they submitted the information to a state database which was public. The problem is that they, they submitted it incorrectly. They got one of the items wrong, which was who caused the crash. And that led to the confusion, like maybe a day's worth of news items were saying that this other driver, the 21 year old female driver is the one that swerved. Well, no, that wasn't the case. So it just adds another layer of kind of, you know, uncertainty to the whole thing and makes people think that there's more going on there than. Than what there really is.

[Dan Patrick]

It just feels like if the Niners come out and say he's in an accident, then, okay, we'll wait for any details that come out after that. It happens. But when everybody's holding this information or those who had it, held it, and then you get the green light, and then everybody's got a tweet and then you have a story, and I go, they're just, they're adding to the suspicion surrounding this. That's, that's what I. This, to me, it was preventable, Matt.

[Matt Barrows]

Well, you're speaking to the choir on that, of course. I mean, I can only think that they were waiting to see, you know, what would happen with Kyle Shanahan. This happened 11 days between before the start of training camp and before he needed to be in front of the media, in front of the team, etc. Etc. So I think that they thought that there was a possibility he would have been back in full by that point. I mean, if he had been back, there's no way, you know, if he's up there at the, at the podium with his hat pulled down low like he normally wears it, at that point, I don't think anyone could have. Could tell that he'd been in an accident. It's the concussion that's really been the lingering issue, and you just never know when that's gonna heal back to normal. But I agree with you 100%. If they had just put it out immediately and if the Palo Alto PD had just said, okay, here's the accident report and here's all the information and all that confusion and all of the distrust, you know, towards the team, towards court reporters. I'm getting a lot of the, the back blow from it, too. Like I'm, I'm somehow in cahoots with Kyle Shanahan and Palo Alto pd. I'm not. Wouldn't have, Wouldn't have occurred.

[Dan Patrick]

When Shanahan was made available to reporters with no cameras, any topics, not allowed.

There were.

[Matt Barrows]

I mean, they were off the record, so I can't tell you, but he kind of explained what his, you know, his point of view was, and this was on the record. I mean, he was very distressed that this other driver, a 21 year old female he, who he was already really guilty over, you know, putting in harm's way, had initially been blamed for, for the crash when it was his fault, his inattention.

Yeah.

[Matt Barrows]

So that was the, the impetus of him calling Reporters in. And then the other part was to explain what we just talked about, that it wasn't his intent to hide it. He said that he, you know, called 14, I don't know, maybe. Maybe a dozen close associates, friends, family, let them know, and he didn't tell them not to put it out there. He thought it would. It just didn't at that point. And the team hasn't said exactly why it didn't put it out there. You know, to your point, it's, it's an accident that happens. There was no, you know, criminality involved. No one was cited in the, in the whole thing. He's the only one that got hurt. So I think that they just, they just figured, you know, it's, it's something that everybody has, and we're just going to kind of let it go.

[Dan Patrick]

As for the Niners on the field this year, that seems to be a mystery, too. Matt, you're in a real tough division. How would you handicap what to expect from the Niners?

[Matt Barrows]

Well, with the 49ers, it all boils down to health every year. And, you know, one of the guys that they're, they're counting on, Ricky Pierce hall, he was, he was going to start opposite Mike Evans this year. I think his season is really up in the air now. He's, he's still dealing with the PCL issue that, that bothered him for more than half the season last year. They're, they're going to sign Deebo Samuel, and he very likely will kind of slide into that Z receiver role opposite Mike Evans, which is great. I mean, there's not going to be any kind of learning curve there. He's well known inside the locker room, but he's another guy in his 30s on that offense. And you're talking about a team that's dealt with health issues in recent seasons. Those, those health issues, Dan, don't go away when you turn 30. And I think that's going to be, you know, if everybody can stay healthy or they can even stay relatively healthy. They showed last year in going 12 and five that they can be a good team, but I think that that is, you know, is going to determine whether they're keeping pace with the Rams and Seahawks or not.

[Dan Patrick]

This is what happens in local Markets now used to be newspapers were very powerful and a newspaper reporter, columnist, they would go with the story. Like they weren't worried about the Niners were going to shut out the newspaper or a reporter or columnist. It's changed now. You don't, you don't have teams as far as reporters covering. And they're worried about the newspaper or tv, local TV station. You know, you're, you're able to control the narrative, or at least in this case they did. For 11 days they controlled it. And then you had people who had information were given the green light to then report on it. It's, it's not a coincidence that they put out a statement and then you get a tweet from Adam Schefter and then you get an article on espn.

Yes, Mark, but it's such a bad idea because holding it for 11 days just even raises more questions. Or even like the off the record press conference with Kyle Shanahan. Now you even have more questions about what's going on.

[Dan Patrick]

They just, just missteps. That's, that's all I can, how I can sum it up? Just, you keep adding to it. Sports Business Journal and others. Now this is a statement from CBS Sports. So it's not that they had it. I want to give credit if anybody broke the story. Tony Romo is on leave from his role at CBS Sports until further notice. J.J. watt will work with Jim Nance and Tracy Wolfson for the time being. Now, you wouldn't say J.J. will be working with Jim Nance and Tracy Wolfson for the time being unless JJ will be doing the games because Tony Romo's on leave until further notice. Okay, that could be for a month. But if you're mentioning JJ with Jim and Tracy, then JJ Watts probably going to be doing games, regular season games to start the year. I wonder about the future of Tony Romo with kind of everything that's happened in the last couple of years. He's very expensive. You know, there's, there's a lot of opinions and reports that aren't flattering about his work ethic. He was great when he first got out and he was, you know, Nostradamus and he, you know, everybody wanted to have a Tony Romo. You know, analysts wanted to change how they approach the game, predicting things, and then all of a sudden lost his edge, maybe the ability to do research or take the research given to him. But if you're going to have JJ working with Jim and Tracy, I don't think Jim and Tracy are working on Anything until they work on the NFL regular season. I don't know if. If Jim and Tracy are. And CBS are doing preseason games. Usually you'll do a preseason game to get ready for the regular season. But I don't know about cbs. I don't know anybody there. But Sports Business Journal is reporting that Tom in California. Good morning, Tom. What do you have for me?
