Miller Brewing Co. Milwaukee, Wisconsin. 96 calories and 3.2 carbs, 1 per 12 ounces. You are listening to the Dan Patrick show on FOX Sports Radio. Final hour on this Monday. Hall of Famer Steve Young will stop by in about 20 minutes. More phone calls. Best and worst of the weekend. What you saw that you liked, you didn't like. Saturday night, Oregon, Penn State. That'll be on Saturday night. NBC. And Peacock. Here comes Saturday Night, presented by Discover. Good morning. If you're watching this show on Peacock, college football ramps up this next week. Now all of a sudden, it gets really serious. Led by the Penn State, Oregon game. A few surprises over the weekend. Texas Tech might be what we think they are. They certainly got hyped. But Utah, most people thought Utah would win that game. Oklahoma, not going away. Miami is now number two in the country. This is where you can take away all those preseason rankings. Now. This is the real. This is where it's like, okay, that team is good. That team's not good. Clemson loses to Syracuse. They're now one win on the season. Indiana rolls. Indiana is, you know, we were looking for the who's the Indiana team this year like last year. It turns out it's Indiana is the Indiana team and they might be better than last year, but lsu, Miami, Oregon, Florida State, Texas, they all roll. And Michigan goes to Nebraska, ends up winning that game as well. Tonight you got the Lions. They're getting four and a half at the Ravens. Both teams come in at one and one wild finishes yesterday, certainly the one o' clock games. Eagles come back, Chargers quietly beat the Broncos. Browns over the Packers. They just kind of waited. They hung around and the packers didn't put them away. Bears over the Cowboys, Buccaneers over the Jets. Vikings. That was impressive. That was very depressive if you're a Bengals fan. And Mike Florio from Pro Football Talk just joined us in studio and he said he doesn't think the Bengals are going to give up draft picks or spend that kind of money to bring in Kirk Cousins. And if I'm the Falcons and I have designs on being a playoff team, I don't know if I want to get rid of Kirk Cousins because he might still be your best option after what happened yesterday. It's not that they lost, it's they didn't score. And I always think Atlanta is going to score. Their defense is usually an issue. Well, both sides of the ball were an issue. The Seahawks quietly rolling along. They didn't need much. It was like turnovers and returns and next thing you knew they were dominating that game. Chiefs over the Giants. The booze are starting for Russell Wilson Jr. The third do you put Jackson Dart in a home game against the Chargers or do you wait on the road the following week and you will be in New Orleans? But it feels like it's inevitable that it's going to happen. You know, the Bengals can go from 2 and oh to probably 2 and 5 if I look at the schedule here. So they beat the Browns, they beat the Jags, they got blown out yesterday. They got at the Broncos. That's a Monday night game. Then they're hosting the Lions, they're at the packers, and then they host the Steelers. It doesn't get much easier for them. And now you find out best case scenario, Joe Burrow could be back at the end of the regular season or start the postseason. And my point is he might be back for the postseason, but not a postseason in Cincinnati. 8773 DP Show Email address dpdanpatrick.com Twitter handle @DP Show Poll question for the final hour of the program. By the way, is there any bandwagon aside from your favorite team that you're jumping on? Anybody with me with the Colts? Anybody on that bandwagon? Todd?
Paulie
Yeah, I saw what they can do against my team and the fact that they never punt and they score almost every single time they get the ball. It's hard not to believe in the Colts even after just three weeks.
Dan Patrick
All right, anybody on Chargers bandwagon? That was oh, wow. Okay, front row, Paulie and Marvin. Yeah, Paul.
Marvin
I saw a throw. I don't know if you guys saw this by Herbert. He got rushed and he rolled left while getting hit and threw it across his body for a touchdown. It may be the single best throw I've ever seen. Where?
Dan Patrick
Wait, ever? Of all throws that you've ever seen.
Marvin
Not as an importance, but in physical skill. I got to show this to you in a look and they may be showing it to you on TV right now. I don't think three guys in the world can make this throw. Mahomes, Herbert, Aaron Rodgers, five years ago.
Dan Patrick
Wait, this is the greatest throw that you've ever seen?
Seaton
Yes.
Marvin
From a physical standpoint of how few people can master it and do it. He was rolling to his left and kind of twisted his body and threw a strike the other way in the end zone.
Dan Patrick
Okay. Gonna ask Steve Young about that.
Steve Young
Yes.
Dan Patrick
By the way, Herbert is 27 years, 195 days, the youngest player in NFL history to reach 2000 career complet. He did so in his 82nd career game, the second fastest to reach 2000 career completions to Patrick Mahomes. 81 games. So he's the youngest to do it. And he needed 82 games. Mahomes needed 81. Yes, Todd.
Paulie
Also, the combination of the enthusiasm Jim harbor brings and the fact that the first three games on their schedule, all division opponents, so they've already beat all them at least once. So they can either sweep them or no worse than split with their division. That's pretty huge. Three games in.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, I agree. Yes. Marvin.
Fritzy
And I think the Chargers have the best defender in football, like Derwin James. I think he's almost like Jonathan Taylor, but on the defensive end where he's been maybe the best at his position, but no one really talks about it on the national level.
Dan Patrick
Okay, so they have a quarterback who threw the greatest pass ever and they have the best defensive player in football.
Marvin
And we're clearly not overreacting.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, no overreaction here. Yes.
Marvin
No Recency bias?
Dan Patrick
No.
Steve Young
Morning after?
Dan Patrick
No. No, not at all. All right. Did we come up with a poll question for the final hour? Seaton?
Seaton
Yeah, we got two of them up there right now. This weekend's come back to haunt you game right now. Packers, Browns still had about 40% of that, followed by Rams, Eagles. Then we also have up there win of the weekend. I only have room for four options. So Panthers fans, Panthers didn't make that cut, which maybe they should have, but just in the comments, they're represented very well. But the win of the weekend. Your options there. Indiana, Syracuse, Chargers, Bears. Indiana got about 44% of that vote.
Dan Patrick
There was a moment post game last night, Chris Jones, the Chiefs defensive lineman, he was interviewed by Melissa Stark and it starts with her question.
Caller
All right, you told us that you.
Dan Patrick
Have asked Russell Wilson multiple times for.
Steve Young
His jersey to do a jersey swap.
Dan Patrick
And you've never gotten one. Never got it. Did you.
Ad Read Announcer
Did you ask him again tonight?
Dan Patrick
I don't even want it. It's all good. I don't want it. Hey, you know, over time, you kind of understanding that now. I don't even want it. Just love it more. Wow. Okay. Seemed a little aggressive there that you don't want it. Yes, Marvin.
Fritzy
This is hurting his hall of Fame changes even more for Russell Wilson.
Dan Patrick
He's a Hall of Famer. He's going to be a Hall of Famer.
Fritzy
The recency bias is going to hurt him.
Dan Patrick
I know, I know. I. I love that. You know, the idea that we had, if you reversed careers and, you know, could you imagine reversing Stafford's career and Russell Wilson's career where he starts out like this and he's not good at all, bounced around to a couple of teams, then all of a sudden goes to a team and goes to two Super Bowls. Or you flip it around with Stafford and Stafford, you know, struggles or starts out with a Super bowl win and then this season, and then he'll, you know, go to a team that's a losing team. And sometimes, you know, we look at. We would look at you differently because, oh, you're just holding on, you're washed like Russ. Whereas if you flipped it around and you could go, oh, man, look at the success that he's having. Yes, Marvin.
Fritzy
But it's going to be tough because when you look at pro football, you know, his stats, it's going to say Seahawks, then Broncos, then Steelers, then Giants, where it was not eventful for three other franchises.
Dan Patrick
Is this his last stop? Does Russell Wilson play for another team, Paul?
Marvin
Can he accept a backup role and backup pay?
Dan Patrick
Yeah, I think he would be a good cheerleader.
Marvin
He's not getting the reigns to another franchise.
Dan Patrick
Okay, but is he playing on another team next year or would he just stay there and be a backup quarterback? See, that's. That's the amazing part with Kurt Warner. You went from an offense that was reinventing offenses in the NFL and the Greatest show on Turf, and then you go and you back up Eli Manning. And I'm thinking, how did that happen? And Then you have this career resurgence where you get into the hall of Fame because what you did with Arizona, taking them to the super bowl and nearly winning that.
Marvin
Yeah, Paulie, I'm going to throw this out there. This is a sports radio trade with almost no thought behind it. If you were the Bengals, would you give a low ball offer to the Giants for Russell Wilson? He's not making a lot of money. The Giants would probably. You're doing them a favor. They can move to Jackson Dart and get a draft pick and maybe Russell would be decent with really good receivers around him.
Dan Patrick
Well, you have to believe that Russell can still play over Jake Browning. Yes.
Marvin
Or you just say this season is a wash and you're. I'm the Bengals and we're doing nothing. But you could send a. A fourth round draft, a fifth round draft pick and grab Russell Wilson right now.
Dan Patrick
Yeah.
Marvin
And he's not making any money.
Dan Patrick
Yeah.
Marvin
The Cousins trade is a much, much bigger deal financially and salary cap wise.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, I wouldn't do that. I wouldn't do that. I mean, you might just hold on for dear life with Jake Browning now. He's. He's shown that he can play the position. He just hasn't shown that he could play the position very well this year. Yes.
Fritzy
Mark, you still have Matthew Stafford going to the hall of Fame?
Dan Patrick
Yeah.
Fritzy
Like first ballot.
Dan Patrick
I don't know about ballots, but I would say he's hall of Famer over time. Yeah.
Fritzy
Because that one Pro bowl is still.
Dan Patrick
I know, I know. And then Russ made like 10 Pro Bowls, right? Yeah, I think Matthew Stafford. Yeah, I do. Tula in Washington. Hi, Tula.
Caller
Good morning, Dan. Good morning, Danette. How are you?
Dan Patrick
Great.
Caller
Good. Best and worst of the weekend. I'm gonna pull a seat and I'm gonna double down here. Best of the weekend was Aaron Glenn sideline dance. That was phenomenal. Another best of the weekend was Jordan Davis giving us a finally a good Jordan story in football.
Dan Patrick
Mm.
Caller
And worst of the weekend was Apple cup. My Cougars took a beating hard. So proud coug though.
Dan Patrick
All right, well, thank you, Tula. Yeah, I love flipping around. Usually watching games that I don't think anybody else is watching now. It's like, all right, let me watch Washington State. Okay. David in Ohio. Hi, David. What's on your mind today?
Caller
Yeah, Dan, I got two best of the weekend. First one goes to Aaron Ayahuasca Rogers, who somehow edged out the Patriots, proving that the throwback uniforms may look cool, but they can't teleport you to New England. Back to the Brady years. And the other best is, of course, the Cowboys, who got beat so bad that what Shane Irving calls Caleb Williams quote fingernails that maybe Dak Prescott should grab a bottle of polish himself. Clearly nail art is a more effective offensive scheme than whatever Dallas is running. Thank you.
Dan Patrick
All right, David. Yeah. Now, is everybody back in with Caleb Williams? Because it felt like last week everybody was out that this isn't going to work out. That you know that relationship between coach and quarterback. Yes, Marvin.
Fritzy
No, this is going to happen every single week somebody plays the Cowboys because Russell Wilson last week went off and Caleb Williams this week went off because you're playing a bad secondary.
Dan Patrick
Okay.
Fritzy
People like, oh, is Russ back? Is he back to cooking? No, it's not even a sous chef.
Dan Patrick
The Colonel in Tampa joins us. Hey, Colonel.
Caller
Team Tampa. Team Tampa. Hey. My best of this weekend was two great athletes. Daniel. Two great athletes. Who might you say? Roger Daltrey and the younger Pete Townsend. Great concert in Hollywood Bowl. Made it back to see one other great thing. And who's that, Dan? Who's that?
Dan Patrick
That's Baker Mayfield.
Caller
Number Tuca, Baker to number Duka and Buka. That's what I got for you, buddy. Thanks.
Dan Patrick
Thank you, Colonel. Yeah, the who's still out there. I don't know what they sound like. Bob Dylan's still out. Bob Dylan's still out there. I think he was doing farm aid. Dave Matthews, Willie Nelson. I think Dave has kind of taken that over a little bit. Farm aid, that was back in 85. Maybe John. Yeah, Mellencamp, Willie Dylan's been involved in that. But yeah, the who's still out there. Let's see. Jim in Michigan. Hi, Jim. What's on your mind today?
Caller
Hey, Dan. A worst of, best of, unsports related. But the, the worst of, I'm gonna be with Marvin on this one with the Tigers. I mean, we don't even know what's going on there. We got best of sister came in and visited the family from West Virginia. That was cool. And I kind of have a situation with the, with the tush push. Not really a penalty, but maybe if you go ahead and use the tush push, you know, you're usually backed up and you have to do it and you're down on that end. Why not give the other team, if you don't make it like an advantage by bringing them out to the 20 yard line or even the 50 yard line. So it's not really a penalty. But you know, you have to ask yourself on both occasions, do I really want to do this. And if I don't make it, you know, the other team has more of an advantage.
Dan Patrick
I just, I don't want to gimmick up things. You know, I like, I like subtracting from rules, not adding to them. And it just feels like the NFL is great at adding something to it. It's just hard to officiate it. But really it starts at the line of scrimmage. You know, is the defense in the neutral zone? Probably. Is the offensive line jumping? Probably. Can you spot the ball accurately? Probably not. Just start there. That's. It's reason enough for them to get rid of the play next year. I personally don't have a problem with it. I, I don't. I think they do it really well. They're going to continue to do it well even if it's just a quarterback sneak. But, but I understand the aesthetics of it. It's a predictable play. It's like the extra point and then they had to alter that because it was too predictable. I even thought of this. What if we didn't allow you to kick field goals unless it was 50 yards or more?
Marvin
This is my kind of idea. This is something I would throw out.
Dan Patrick
There that, that you can't kick a field goal. You can only kick a field goal from 50 yards or further. You have to go for it constantly. And it feels like, you know, the, the new analytics is everybody's going for it now. Even in the Bears game, you know, Tom was calling the game and Brady was like, I don't know about 4th and goal. And then Caleb had, you know, a wide open touchdown there. And you know, these offensive coordinators, they're going for it now. At least that's the new analytics, the new math. All right, let me take a break. Hall of Famer Steve Young joins us next. Dan Patrick show. Be sure to catch the live edition of the Dan Patrick show, weekdays at 9am Eastern, 6am Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app. Hey, we're Covino and Rich, Fox Sports radio every day, 5 to 7pm Eastern. I've been a Danette for many years. As a matter of fact, it's one of the longest relationships I've ever had in my life, longer than actually my wife. And one of the things I've learned in that time is that most athletes elevate performance through better nutrition. And here's the thing, your pets aren't much different. Your pets need quality protein to build lean muscle, balanced nutrition to maintain energy and proper hydration to support recovery and thrive regardless of their preferred form of exercise. That's why gold medalists like Simone Biles and Caleb Dressel, they trust new low for their own pets and and they understand that champion performance starts with what goes into their body. Nulo is loaded with premium protein that builds and maintains muscle. Their low carb formula prevents those midday crashes. So your pet stays in the game all day. And their mix and match options help you customize nutrition for your pet's specific needs, like a pro athlete's meal plan. The bottom line is champions don't leave performance to chance and neither should you. My dogs, I have got three of them and they absolutely love new load. You, you should visit nulo.com that's n u l o.com to fuel. Incredible.

More phone calls coming up. Update the poll results as well. We welcome back the hall of Famer, three time super bowl champ and Super Bowl MVP Steve Young back on the program. Paulie just telling me about the Justin Herbert throw and said it might be the greatest throw he's ever seen physically, the greatest throw that he's ever seen. Dan Orlovsky of the Mothership said only five players can make that pass. You've seen the play. How great was the pass by Justin Herbert?
Steve Young
It was amazing and I agree with that. Physically, what you have to be able to do, the strength to climb the pocket to be mobile enough to find the space. I thought for a second he might throw it left handed the way that how good he is. But he did grapple with his right going left and across his body. I mean it's just, it's, it's why you always say why, why do guys get paid? Why, why are quarterbacks. It's a really tough job, Dan, as you know. And to me Justin's a guy like first of all, just take it from an artistic perspective. I mean if you're just an appreciator of the throwing motion as an art form. Justin Herbert is the Mona Lisa, right? Like he, he and Andrew Luck. In my mind with the two guys when I watch them throw, I'm like, oh, you know, you get Lightheaded, you know, you're like, oh, that's nice. That is sweet. You know, people around me when I'm watching them play, like, steve, relax, bro. It's, you know, it's not. But. But then he's been unleashed a little bit with Jim and Harbaugh. I appreciate. He was like a kept man, and I didn't like it. He was getting beat up. He was hanging in the pocket too long. And I think, you know, I really like that when he's come out this season. He won a game with his legs the other day. Like, he is more mobile in his mind. Like, okay, I'm attacking the line of scrimmage, and you know how I feel about that. You have to be able to attack the line of scrimmage in today's game because it's so much of a differentiator and there's so much free yards and touchdowns to go get. And so as you think about that throw he was doing that, I'm a. I don't see anybody. I'm going to start, get out of the pocket, try to find some space. I, I might run it, I might throw it. And so he's the kind like Josh Allen, who are the five, he thinks that can do it. I mean, it's Patrick, it's Josh. Lamar could maybe do that. It's Joe Burrow, maybe. I mean, you know, I mean, it's just. There's a few guys, right? There's a few guys that could do that.
Dan Patrick
Aaron Rodgers, maybe.
Steve Young
Aaron, you know, I mean, Aaron and, you know, a little younger Aaron, maybe. I think that Aaron's a little bit more sedate. But, yeah, I think that there's no question as far as army capability, athleticism. Yeah.
Dan Patrick
All right. Is there a team. You're jumping on the bandwagon now. You've seen enough where you go, all right, I'm all in on them.
Steve Young
Well, you have to kind of say Philadelphia, because they're, they're. They're built the locker room. They've been tested, they've been battle tested. They've been through it. And then, you know, to see what happened yesterday is one of those catapults, like, oh, yeah, it's happening. I know it's still the preseason in September. It takes three or four weeks of a. Of a. Of this, of the year, you know, of the seasons these days where, you know, preseason is not really preseason. This is the preseason. So you just don't know for sure. But if I had to bet on a team that's going to Be there at the end. I would say the Bills and the, and the, and the Eagles.
Dan Patrick
I watched the Bears and the Cowboys, and it was entertaining, but it's one of those games that I'm not sure if it means anything. It was just entertaining. At the end of the year, we might look back and say, oh, yeah, Caleb, yeah, he looked great against the Cowboys. Do you have an idea of how good these teams are?
Steve Young
No, And I don't let they know. No one can. I mean, like I said, today's game, they limit so much the time between coaches and quarter and quarterbacks and the team players with quick OTAs. And then a preseason that's abbreviated. They can't, you know, it's not going out of contact. It's like, look, they throw, you know, free agency is as wild as it's ever been. Like, it's. They throw a team together and then you just, you know, it's like throw the mechanic in the trunk, right? We're going to, we're going to figure it out as we go. And so I, that's why I say the first four weeks, you really don't know who you are. The really good teams show up, the really bad team show up, and everyone in the middle is just like, okay, let's just hope we're two and two or three and one by the end of this, and then we'll start to figure out who we are. But to me, that game, like, the Cowboys are just, I mean, you've heard me talk about it forever. They're just flawed from the top because they don't, you know, the owner doesn't empower the coach to go get anything done. And so it's just in the end, they just flail around. So I don't. The Cowboys, I just, whatever, the Bears, I mean, look, they have a coach that's proven offensive mind, innovative mind. And Caleb, quarterbacks, there's 10 places like that. There's more than that now because I really think the league's got a lot more innovative minds. Thanks to Kyle Shanahan and Sean McVay and Andy Reid and their trees and Sean Payton, their trees of coaches are now flooded the NFL. So it's, it's better for quarterbacks. And so I think Coach Johnson, I think Caleb, I think they'll be a good marriage. As he. Look, the coach has never had a mobile quarterback before. He said, look, I've never coached a mobile quarterback. Well, you know, there's things that are new there, so there's that even preseason going on. But I Love what happened for the Bears yesterday. They needed it, and it was just a sign that there's life there.
Dan Patrick
What's different with Daniel Jones, you know.
Steve Young
When he was in New York, if you think about it, when they quieted his mind down, Daniel's one of those guys that's very athletic. He thinks he can do it all. And when he tries to do it all, things go. You know, the oil starts to fly all over the other. You know, it's just.
Dan Patrick
It's.
Steve Young
You know, it's crazy. And so what he was. When they quieted it down and asked less and ran the football and simplified things, it got better. And so I think what's happened is you got to one of those places where, you know, it's an offensive mind that clicks with him and they run the football. And you know how it works, Dan? Things get simpler when linebackers and safeties are freaking out, worrying about running the football. All of a sudden, play action, bam. And when things are clear and simple for him, he can perform. And so I think that's how it works, and I think it can happen. I mean, I don't think it's just a fluke. I think that Daniel can be under the right circumstances. And the truth is, I think a lot of guys, if they can find the place that resonates with them, which is not everywhere, which is not even half of the teams. Quarterback, I've said to you many times, if I could play today and I could run to any, you know, football, NFL team today, where would you want to play? Well, there's. There's three that I'd run to right now, and then there's 10 that I would like. Yeah, all right, I'll go there. And there's 15.
Dan Patrick
I'm like, no, give me the teams you would run to.
Steve Young
I go to San Francisco, the Rams and the Chiefs. I mean, those are. Those are the innovative minds that when the. Since the rule changes in. In 10 years ago or eight years ago, they're the ones that had the tactical advantage because of their innovation, because they saw the opportunity, and immediately, you know, with a. With incredible minds, just started to change the game. And you remember what. And then, you know, they've had to reiterate and reinvent themselves as their coaches went out, were hired by other teams because they saw what happened with Miami and Minnesota and Green Bay. And, like, you just go around the lake now. It's everywhere. Jacksonville, like, there's guys that have just come from those trees that have innovative minds that have seen it and go okay, this is what we're going to do. That's why I think the tactical advantage from those guys has gone, you know, it's lost a little bit, but they have to reinvent themselves again. And. But those are three places I would sprint to.
Dan Patrick
Talking to hall of Famer Steve Young. If you were going to give advice, what quarterback do you think needs advice?
Steve Young
What do you mean? Like, like every quarterback need. What are you. What are you talking about? Like, you mean like Josh Allen?
Dan Patrick
Does Josh Allen need advice?
Steve Young
Well, everybody's. Everyone has to continue to iterate their game and really take the positives. And like Josh, he was trying to be Superman. It wasn't really advice that I would give to his game. It was like, please, please, Bills, please Bill's offense, please give him some help so that he doesn't have to be Superman all the time. Because when you have to be Superman all the time, just like Patrick Mahomes was trying to be Superman four or five years ago, then you get into games and you just. Things go haywire again. Like, you have to be able to calm your mind and be, you know, deliver from the pocket, not have to be Superman every play. And then when they ask you to for four or five plays a game, like, yeah, no problem. And so everyone needs advice, everyone needs help, and it's not necessarily about them. So much of it is, you know, everyone says, oh, the commodity in the NFL is coaching. Yeah, just get a coach. Like, that's the offensive coordinators, the play callers, the best in the game are like the Josh Allens are like the Patrick Mahomes are like the Lamar Jacksons. There's. There's a few and you've got to search them out and find them. And when they meet another great talent, that's why people go to the Super Bowl. And so just do not think that the talent to be a great offensive coordinator. And especially an innovative kind of game we have today where there's all kinds of cool stuff you can do. Those guys are differentiators. So the advice I would give to quarterbacks, every one of them, find somebody like that. Because they're not.
Dan Patrick
They're, they're.
Steve Young
They're. They're not a dime a dozen, that's for sure.
Dan Patrick
What would you say to Lamar Jackson if he came to you and said, steve, what do you think of my mic?
Steve Young
I would love that because Lamar is my guy. Like, I think Lamar can be the greatest player of all time. And I've said this for years, and I think the Ravens have hurt. They haven't heard me. I mean, they don't care. But I'm just saying, four or five years ago, they were the most sophisticated running game in history, and they win a lot of games and they go to the playoffs and just flail because the game is sophisticated. Passing game is still what matters. Great running games are great, but. And then Lamar just was not being challenged to be a sophisticated passer, and I knew he could be. And then a couple of years ago, you saw them transition, and they got the help he needed at receiver and made a commitment to it and believed in him and then started to call the place to do that. So I think that transition is happening, and that's why Lamar continues to thrive and can get better and better. I would say to Lamar, keep on this track. Make sure every week that you're doing the study like it's. Quarterback sucks in a lot of ways during the week because it's a memorization game. It's reflexive memorization, so that when you get to the game, you've studied enough that you know all the tendencies, you know, you know, in the red zone, blitz tendencies. You know, you've watched enough film. You know, so much of it is just a mind game. And I would just tell him, like, he is obviously doing the work. Just double down every. Every. Every week, every season, like, double down on the mind game.
Dan Patrick
How much of the position is being an entertainer?
Steve Young
Look, I would. I wouldn't call entertainer. I would call it psychologist, like you. The game really demands a dynamic human being that can deal with people, you know, bespoke, right, where everybody's different and everybody needs to be. Some guys can get yelled at, and some guys, you can't yell. You got to kind of, like, pat them on the back. Sometimes you got to find different ways to communicate, but you always have to be accountable. And it's just a dynamic situation. So the entertainment part is. Is really in the. In the doing and in the getting guys together, getting your office alignment to believe that it's okay that you get paid 10 times the amount they do, and they have to get in a fight every week and you don't, and you get to be on tv and, like, there's all kinds of dynamics in the locker room. There's dynamics with the media. So in that way, I would say, yeah, that's a huge quotient, the way you're asking the question. But I don't think it's necessarily like, can you sing and dance? Like, it's. There's fundamentals to it. It's it's a, it's a. Like I said many times I poured myself into playing and there's nothing like it. And ever since, there's nothing like what I had to do to try to be good in the, or great in the NFL. And so in that way, the 40, the quarterbacks are just, it's an awesome, brutal opportunity to be amazing. If you can figure out how to pour yourself into it and give everything else of yourself but that entertainment side of it, that's pretty, you know, to me, that's what, it's entertaining to Dan. When you're good or when you're great, when you're winning and you're making great plays like Justin Herbert. That's entertainment, right? Is that what you're talking about? Yeah, like that's, that's excellence. That's just the, that's the tip of the spear kind of awesome. Physical, emotional. Like the way, the way he got there was not just because he's a great athlete. The way he got there is because he's a gritty, tough minded, you know, dynamic human being that can get everybody fired up to go play some, you know, go ram into people and, and get into a fight and support you. So to me, yeah, that's entertainment. It is. You have to have that.
Dan Patrick
I asked this question last week. What do you hear when you're in the pocket? Like when you step up in the pocket, what do you, what do you hear?
Steve Young
I heard Reggie White yelling. Like he was, screamed like he was a screamer. Like, Reggie's like, like he heard him coming like a train.
Dan Patrick
Wait, wait, he would just.
Steve Young
Screaming.
Dan Patrick
Bro.
Steve Young
You'Re already, you're 6, 6, 500. Just stop with the screaming, you know, but you don't. It's like the white noise of the crowd. Like people say, do you, what do you hear? It's like, it's just, it's the job. It's. It takes so much focus and so much like you think about just the anticipatory throwing as you see people moving and now know how to, you know where you need to let it go at the time you need to let it go. Nobody's open. Nobody's like, oh, he's open. Let me throw it. Like, that's college, man. That's high school. Like, nobody's open when you throw it. You have to throw it well before something happens. And so in that way, that focus is so great that it's not like, oh, I, you know, Reggie, I did hear, I have to admit that's why I Said it, but. But I, I just. It's just. It's just white noise. It's like, just whatever. Like, you know, I, I didn't. And then, you know, if no one here. I mean, you hear it. The only thing you hear is, Is after the play, you know, stupid. I mean, what defensive line has ever said anything you really understand? You know, how their face is pushed to the helmet, you know? And, you know, from your mother, I'm like, my mom. What. What problem.
Dan Patrick
Did they try to trash?
Steve Young
You're screaming something that I don't. I don't get. Your. Your face is squished in your helmet. You don't. You're, you're gurgling something. I don't know what you're talking about, bro.
Dan Patrick
They tried to trash talk you.
Steve Young
Yeah, but you don't understand it. Like, I know you're trying to get to me, but, bro, I cannot understand you, man.
Dan Patrick
But Lawrence Taylor, any of those guys.
Steve Young
I don't mean it was like, you know, it's like just a bunch of, like, gobbledygook. I mean, the safeties, splits and corners. Safeties. I, I, it's like, you know, you. But defensive lineman, just. No, no, not much there.
Dan Patrick
Did Dion ever trash talk you?
Steve Young
Oh, he's the best. He's the best. You know, he told me, Dan, it was amazing when he joined the 49ers, he turned to me, he grabbed me early and said, look, Steve, what I want you to know is that I'm an amazing teammate. And in the locker room, I do my prep, I'm ready to play, and you'll never doubt me. The rest of it, just get some popcorn and watch the parade, bro, because it's a. It's a good one. And he was exactly right. He never, he was always ready to play. He was a great teammate. He was great in the locker room. And there was a parade, man, and we just kind of watched it. It was fun. He was. Yeah. Dion could, you know, Dion was in the middle of you talking about entertainment.
Dan Patrick
There you go. Yeah, that.
Steve Young
There he is. He was that good that he could be great and entertain the whole way. That's not easy to do it from corner. You can do it from corner because you. It's a hard job physically, but, you know, it's not like, you know, you have to anticipatory, throwing in 22 guys running around like, it's, It's a different game. So in that way, you could, you could say, you know what? I'm going to be great, and I'm going to make you, you know, laugh or entertain or make you whatever, you know. I think you could do it from there.
Dan Patrick
Could he have been a Hall of Fame receiver if he just played offense?
Steve Young
Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah, for sure. No question. He kept. In our. When I was with him that one year, went to super bowl, he. He kept going over there, and I said, look, let's. Let's cool. Let's cool. Let's get some. Let's get some routes in the Super Bowl. We finally. We threw it late in the game. We did something because we owed him to him because he did so much work on the offense. He was like. He did a lot of prep work to. To be useful if needed. You know what I mean? And I love that, because I was like. The idea was just. He's like. He said, just throw it. Don't worry. Just shop back and just rip it, and then I'll take care of the rest. I believed him, man. I believe that it's possible. The dude was. He. You know, Dan, he was one of the rare guys that defied your eye, you know, as a. As a player. When you talk about keen sense of physical abilities, you had to know what a corner could do and how fast they could break and how. Just the minute nature of how people moved and. And you got a sense of it, like, a heightened sense of it, so you knew exactly what was happening on the field, who could do what, and there's a timing to it. And then Dion was different. Like, he would. He would shock you. You're like, wait, you're not. You can't move that way. There's not. It's not possible. There was a time when he was with Atlanta. Early on, I was like, I'm just not going over there because I can't. I can't gauge it. It was like something you couldn't. I couldn't get a handle on it because it was. His speed was so incredible. I was like, I can't. I'm not gonna touch you for a little while so I can get used to you.
Dan Patrick
Thanks for sharing. Great to talk to you again. Thank you, Steve.
Steve Young
All right, buddy.
Dan Patrick
That's Steve Young, hall of Famer. You imagine you're telling Bill Walsh or George Seifert. Can we not go towards Dion's side, please? I've been a Danette for many years. As a matter of fact, it's one of the longest relationships I've ever had in my life. Longer than actually my wife. That's why gold medalists like Simone Biles and Caleb Dressel they trust new low for their own pets and they understand that champion performance starts with what goes into their body. Nulo is loaded with premium protein that builds and maintains muscle. Their low carb formula prevents those midday crashes. So your pet stays in the game all day and their mix and match options help you customize nutrition for your pet's specific needs like a pro athlete's meal plan. The bottom line is champions don't leave performance to chance and neither should you. My dogs, I have got three of them and they absolutely love Nulo. You should visit nulo.com that's n u l o.com to fuel incredible.

Last call for phone calls. What we learned what's in store tomorrow do we dare write the headline today for tonight's game? Tomorrow's headline? I think you guys probably don't have time to prepare. Todd probably is able to do that. You could do a headline.
Steve Young
I could.
Paulie
Something along the lines of less than Ferocious Ravens, tame Lions.
Dan Patrick
Okay. Maybe take a little more time.
Seaton
Detroit is good. Those guys are lying.
Dan Patrick
Once again. We probably need a vetted a little bit more.
Paulie
Three one C. I told you the lines were no good. Three one C. Three one C lines ain't nothing.
Dan Patrick
Okay, Marvin, you have a quick NFL game.
Seaton
Take the ravens back across 8 mile that one.
Steve Young
There you go.
Dan Patrick
Work together.
Paulie
See, we work.
Dan Patrick
You know what? My fault. I never should have done this. Okay, Marvin, your quick NFL game.
Fritzy
Yes. My game is guess the quarterback that Deion Sanders has the most interceptions off of.
Seaton
Steve Young.
Fritzy
He's second.
Dan Patrick
No, Todd.
Paulie
Joe Theisman.
Fritzy
No.
Dan Patrick
Joe Montana.
Fritzy
No. Not a Hall of famer.
Dan Patrick
NFC guy though. Correct. Yeah. Yeah, Paulie.
Marvin
Jim Ever to the Rams.
Dan Patrick
Bloop. Okay, don't call me Chris. Jim. Everett Purdues. Jim Everett. Yes, Marvin.
Fritzy
In third place it was Troy Aikman. Then Drew Bledsoe, Kerry Collins, Brett Favre.
Dan Patrick
Okay, Rodney, Pete.
Fritzy
Dan Marino.
Dan Patrick
All right, Ben.
Paulie
Joe. Thass. What a terrible guess.
Dan Patrick
Pat in Connecticut. Hi, Pat. What's on your mind today?
Caller
Adp. Thanks for taking my call. Hey, real quick about the tush push. I was a high school coach here in Connecticut for over 20 years and we ran a play that was, that was very similar to the tush bush. A few differences. The big difference was the fullback would actually carry the ball and instead of assisting the runner, the wings would fold in and push on the backs of the guards, which would kind of create that scrum. And it may look kind of archaic and stone age, but there's a lot of nuance to what those, what those guys are doing up front. It takes a long time to become proficient at it. And once we finally did, it kind of became a calling card for, you know, for our guys and our program and something we were comfortable running on just about any down, let alone, you know, fourth and one. Having said that, it is remarkably difficult to officiate in pre game meetings with the officials. I would walk these guys through it and tell them to be patient with the whistle, that there would be times where that back would actually keep his feet amidst all of the chaos going on in that pile and be able to break it. And two, three, four times a year, the fullback would be 20 yards downfield and an official didn't see him and would blow his head.
Dan Patrick
Thank you, Pat. Brian in Texas. Hi, Brian.
Caller
Hey, dp, how's it going?
Dan Patrick
Good.
Caller
Hey, just to piggyback off that, I hate the first push. And I don't understand how an offensive lineman can put their head down and lead with their head and go into the head of a defense. I mean, you see what I mean here. It looks like two Rams button heads with each other.
Dan Patrick
Yeah.
Caller
If the NFL so caught up on cte, maybe, you know, the injury report or risks are not realized until years later.
Dan Patrick
I just don't. And thanks for the phone call. I don't know why, if it was 2005 that the owners all of a sudden said, you can assist a runner from behind. I got. I don't know why. Like, what was the call for it? Yeah, Paulie, the only thing I could.
Marvin
Find was a New York Times article saying it was happening a lot in football already, that they are. The linemen were pushing the running back and it was hard for the referees to adjudicate. That was the quote they used.
Dan Patrick
Why is it difficult to rule on that?
Marvin
And then the irony is that they let it go and now they're going to get rid of it because it's tough to adjudicate.
Dan Patrick
It would help if they started with offsides. Just. Just. You can officiate that. The other part of it. I understand. Very challenging. Seaton, final results. Poll question. Yep.
Seaton
We got two of them up there right now.
Dan Patrick
Okay.
Seaton
Loss that's gonna haunt you right now. The Packers Browns game has about 41% of that vote that's been staying steady. Win of the weekend has switched a couple of times. Right now, Indiana in the lead with 43% of the vote and then a tie for second between Syracuse and the Bears.
Dan Patrick
Better team. The Colts or the Hoosiers.
Seaton
With Daniel Diming all over the place.
Dan Patrick
Yeah.
Marvin
Paulie, the only thing that could ruin a Hoosiers weekend is Indiana becoming a football school.
Steve Young
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
What did you learn, Todd Louis Riddick's.
Paulie
All in on the Chargers and feels it's time for the Giants to bench.
Dan Patrick
Russ for Jackson Dart Seaton Would you.
Seaton

Dan Patrick
Justin Herbert Marvin Flor's new book is.
Fritzy
Not about the NFL.
Marvin
I'm clearly not overreacting.

This hour of The Dan Patrick Show delves into a whirlwind weekend in college and NFL football, explores "best and worst" moments with callers, and features a lively, insightful interview with Hall of Fame quarterback Steve Young. The discussion centers around what makes a “generational” quarterback throw, the evolving dynamic of NFL offenses, the importance of coaching, and the intangible qualities of leadership and entertainment at the game’s highest level.
On Herbert’s once-in-a-generation throw:
“He rolled left while getting hit and threw it across his body for a touchdown. It may be the single best throw I’ve ever seen. I don’t think three guys in the world can make this throw.” — Marvin (07:57–08:12)
Steve Young on QB artistry:
“Justin Herbert is the Mona Lisa… you get lightheaded, you’re like, ‘Oh, that is sweet.’” — Steve Young (27:09)
On the Bears’ future:
“I love what happened for the Bears yesterday. They needed it, and it was just a sign that there’s life there.” — Steve Young (32:01)
Leadership as a QB:
“The game really demands a dynamic human being that can deal with people… the entertainment part is in the doing.” — Steve Young (37:46)
On Deion Sanders:
“He was always ready to play… just get some popcorn and watch the parade, bro, because it's a good one.” — Steve Young (41:59)
