I'm Jake Hofer and this is back 40, a limited series show on Wire to Hunt, part of Meat Eaters Podcast Network. Each episode, I'll be asking eight whitetail hunting pros a focused, thought provoking question about hunting and land management. How do I hunt the best part of the farm with less than ideal access?

You are listening to the Dan Patrick show on Fox Sports Radio. Doug Gotlieb and the crew in for Dan. The Dan. Dan Patrick Show. Fox Sports Radio. Good morning to you. Hope you're having a great summer. For many people like my son Hayes can't be listed to the show because he's got his first day of school, high school kicking off a lot of kids getting dropped off at their universities. We discussed this like last week. Like I don't know, maybe I'm, maybe my parents were old school, but I don't remember anybody taking me to school. Just bye bye. Felt like that old Saturday Night Live skit. Bye bye, bye bye bye bye. But this is the Dan Patrick show on Fox Sports Radio. Okay. Taylor Swift was on with the Kelsey's on the podcast. So there's a lot to it. Dan, I thought you brought up a bunch of interesting points, but maybe the most interesting was who does this serve? Right? Like who does it serve? What, what's the, what is the point? Why is she doing this? And what do you think that the answer is?
Devin
I was, I watched the almost entirety of the two minute, the two hour episode. I towards the end I just kind of fast forwarded a little bit, but it was on for two hours last night. And even at the end of that, Doug, I wondered, all right, did Taylor do this to bring her fans into the football world? Was it to get football fans to appreciate Taylor Swift? Where, what was the reason behind this? Ultimately I think it shook down to as we talked it out, I think it was probably a safe space for Taylor to say what she wanted to say and to reveal her album and to do it in a neat way with a person that she loves. So ultimately maybe it was just to serve themselves, but record numbers watching it, millions of people when it went live yesterday afternoon or think evening in some parts of the country. But I had wondered and of what was the reason for it even after watching the two hours. And ultimately I think it was just good for Travis and Taylor.
Noah
Yeah, I, I, I think that's what it was. I think it was, it gives America a look at sort of America's couple, right? And J Stu, it took him probably six to nine months to go to come off of the it's a fake relationship argument. And to anybody who thought it was then you watch, you watched yesterday, you can watch now online and be like, no, okay, that works. You know that there, that's a real thing. I Do think that oftentimes we think there's a strategy involved. It's a lot like, here's the parallel I'm going to drive. I have a really good friend who worked with the president in his first term. And his thing was anybody who thinks that when he comes out with some new plan that there's, that they've, they've workshopped it or whatever, that there's a whole plan in place, like, that's not how he operates. It's just not. Oh, there's this master plan with the economy. Like. No, not really. Just has an idea. Somebody proposes an idea, thinks it's a good idea, gets committed to it, goes and does it, even if it may contradict an idea he had a couple weeks ago. And I think that's what's at play here with the Kelsey's, is she probably always wanted to do it right? And everybody's always on. Why don't you ever do that podcast? Why don't you ever do a podcast? Like, we only see you guys taking pictures in a club or a concert or a football game. Like, podcast. It's just a conversation. It's super. Like you've talked people into being a podcast. Like, I don't know. And then you get. The dates arrive, hey, let's do it now before the season. Get out of the way and we'll just talk and we'll, you know, talk music, talk some football, let people know who we are and that's it. Is there, is there a benefit to the Kelsey's? Yes. Is there a benefit to her? Yes. But I, I, and I could be wrong. And maybe it's because I believe in the good in people first and foremost that I don't think everybody has some master plan on how to manipulate likes and how to manipulate downloads and what it means for your music career. Like, she's a billionaire. She's the most popular female artist in the country, period. Stop. He is a multi time super bowl champion, a Pro Football hall of Famer. Like, they don't need much more. They don't need even attention, but it's just their way of. Like, people probably don't think she likes hers into football. You watch that, you listen to that and you understand that she's doing what every great partner should do, which is she's fallen in love with what her partner does. That's what it comes down to.
John Lithgow
I became like a person who was running through the halls of my house screaming, we drafted Xavier Worthy.
Noah
And my friends are like, what is.
AZ Fudd
Who body snatched you this is.
Noah
This is.
AZ Fudd
What do you mean?
John Lithgow
We drafted Xavier Worthy.
AZ Fudd
I forget where I was, but you.
Devin
Were the first person to tell me that in the draft.
AZ Fudd
No, I was screeching.
John Lithgow
I couldn't believe it.
Noah
I was freaking out.
AZ Fudd
We're talking about, like.
Devin
I'm like, wait, did she.
AZ Fudd
She write. I had to look this up. I'm like, she. Did she get the wrong information here? But, yeah, we traded up.
Devin
Yeah.
Noah
You know, I will. I'm going to just hop in. One thing. This is where you're, like, a real person. I like when you. When you superstars are real people.
Devin
She.
Noah
It's Xavier. But she says Xavier. It's like a personal pet peeve. But whatever reason, it's charming because it makes her seem like a real person that she has. There are things about her that aren't.
Devin
Perfect and that she's learning.
Noah
Yeah.
Devin
You know, like. Like, so it's a mistake. That's okay. Not a big deal. And yes, I thought that was. I thought it was. I thought it was great as well. And it wasn't a pick that was. Or a news item that was so obvious. There was a little bit of nuance in it or a little bit of inside that you'd have to be a Chiefs fan to really get excited about.
Noah
We're talking about COVID two, Cover four, Cover zero, man.
John Lithgow
Cover. We're talking. We're learning. I continue to learn.
Devin
Maybe somebody else that even knows what those coverages are.
Noah
Yeah.
John Lithgow
I'm not ready to be an analyst right now. Give me 16 months.
Noah
Yeah, that's. That's. He's been on his iPad and they've been sitting there at home, and he's watching, and she wants to know. I think it's awesome.
Doug Gottlieb
Something tells me that he has been doing the same thing. Like, I reached Taylor Swift and Kelsey fatigue way early into this, and I've almost come around. I was very interested to watch last night. I'm very. I was very impressed or startled, surprised by how genuine they are. They're like two giddy teenagers. I love love. I like watching love. But I also think that he reciprocates that because he's had us fooled this whole time into thinking that he loves her music.
Noah
I thought.
Doug Gottlieb
I thought he was just saying it to be a good boyfriend. But I think he also likes her music, which goes a long way with me because I don't like her music at all. It does nothing for me. It's not for me. It's for teenage girls. But he seems to. Just as she has Dived into the football. I think he's actually embracing her music, too, which is a surprise to me.
Noah
Stan Patrick show here on fox portrait, the iHeartradio app. Go ahead, Dan. I don't.
Devin
Yeah, I do think her music is for everyone, not just for teenage girls. It's just Jason may not like it. I will say that I thought Travis. Travis felt like the third wheel at times because I think he's used to him, him and his brother going back and forth, but understanding that this was Taylor's opportunity, that he, you know, was going to let her shine and would sprinkle in things. But it wasn't a back and forth. It was a back and forth between really, Jason and Taylor. And I thought Jason did a really good job. And I know that there's some editing that's done, but it's not. It's not sneaky editing at all. You know, where the cuts are, you know, where the places where they've. They've stopped and started again. But Jason asked this question to which I thought was great, and I give them credit. Jason just asked, how did it work when you were trying to get your masters back? Like, can you tell me the difference between what, you know, our publishing rights and what aren't? And she laid it out for him, and it was like a real music interview. And she explained of, like, what she could do and what she couldn't do and why it was important for her to get those master recordings and why it may not be for every single artist. And I actually thought that that part of it, aside from them promoting and talking about their relationship, was actually an informative part of the podcast.
Noah
Yeah, it was. It's. Look, I think it's fascinating to understand, to have people understand a business that they never understood before. Right. I've had that conversation with a buddy of mine about masters and about selling him and about holding on to him. And so when I heard that part, I was. I was intrigued. But I did know a lot of it. Again, I just thought. I thought it was a win, but it wasn't set out. They didn't set out to win. Right. They didn't set out to win. They just set out to. I want to do a podcast. Let's do it. That's how it felt. It felt very natural.
Devin
There is. There is something that I do think is. I don't contrived as such a negative connotation, but Travis is on the COVID of gq. I mentioned this earlier, but Jason, at the start of the podcast, Jason Kelsey said, we Told you where we were going to be back August 27th. Instead, we've got a surprise. We're going to do this August 13th. Obviously that dropping helps Taylor, maybe helps GQ, helps Travis. But Travis within this GQ article talked about how his play over the last couple of years slipped. And he says that he let his media responsibilities, doing an FX show, hosting a game show on Amazon, he let those things get in the way of his play. Now yesterday, Doug, after your show, I was in with Kerry Rhodes on Cavito and Rich and Kerry was an all pro and spent eight years in the league. Says I just think he's lost a step. I don't think he has it anymore like he once did. And I think this is all cover up. And hearing what Kerry said and I didn't necessarily disagree with Kerry. In the podcast that aired last night with Taylor, Travis talked about traveling the world and said that in. Taylor brought up the point that Travis had talked about going to different countries. And Taylor's like, yeah, well, hello, I am going on a tour. We can go to all of those countries. And so that's what they did in the summer of 2024. Travis was with her in Europe during those spots or going to different places that wasn't mentioned in the GQ article of the focusing on football. And by the way, it would be okay. Travis Kelsey's accomplished enough in his NFL career. He doesn't need to play another down. He's going into the, into the hall of Fame. But it was interesting to me to hear him say that his TV stuff took him away. But the relationship stuff with Taylor and being in Europe and doing these different things were not a reason on why maybe his play slipped last year, which you disagree with. I just don't know how it helps. You know, like I was when he left Argentina.
Noah
Yeah. Two years ago.
Devin
Yes. During the bi week. I just thought that's crazy. The big joke is the NFL is now like, we'll just go to South America once a year. We'll just, we'll go there too. So maybe it looks a little bit normal. But I didn't think that that was the great move for Travis and preparing for the Chiefs. They ultimately go on and win the Super Bowl. So it didn't have an effect. But again, none of this has an effect and it's okay if it did. He's at the end of his career, but it's just, it's never brought up as maybe a reason on why not the relationship, but just the stuff that comes with the Relationship, you're in a different phase of your life, a different part of your life. But he pointed out, singled out the TV shows, but nothing in terms of the travel that he may have done with his girlfriend.
Noah
I would say this, that inevitably, inevitably, there will be some form of negativity towards it, right? There always is. And here's how I would take that negativity, right? Because it's. It's not. I don't think it's going to be anybody who matters. I think it'll be the. The bots or the fingers on social media that matters. Right? But remember, in order to watch this or listen to this, you have to seek it out, right? You have to seek it out so you can say, I don't care about them. Okay, well, then don't listen and don't watch. It's fine. No big deal. Like, they'll be. They'll be fine. So if you say, hey, I watched, I listed one, I think it'd be really hard to come away and think it's not a real relationship. It's pretty much impossible. And two, they both seem really likable because Travis does suddenly take a backseat, which I think he probably likes, right? He's always been the center of attention. Now it's kind of cool to have a girl that's sort of attention. Like, that's, that's dope. Like, he can just kind of. He can just gotta be the arm candy. And then three, like, again, the most important thing when somebody says, like, dude, I listen to that podcast. Wait, so you sought out that podcast, downloaded it, listen to it, and then you're like, yeah, I'm not into them. Like, okay, that's. You just. You want the attention that you think they're trying to get.
Devin
Here's where I don't think it's going to backfire on him or in any way, or it's going to matter is if he plays well this year, then he's right. And all the work that he's done with a speed and agility coach work this off season. And guess what? It was the TV shows. Travis identified the problem and addressed it. And if it doesn't work, and if he has another down season, he's just old and his better days are behind him. I don't think that this is going to come up. And again, I don't think it matters. I don't think it's a big deal. But it's just funny because it sounds a little hypocritical by Travis to say it was the TV shows and my attention to that, as opposed to being away for a month and traveling throughout Europe.
Doug Gottlieb
I thought it took like balls for him to admit that and for him to admit it on gq. It wasn't like a sports mag, per se, or a sports article or a reporter, but it took balls. And I think that only a guy who's had his career already could say I was distracted last season as my team was trying to win a third straight Super Bowl. Doug, you talk about the negativity and the bots and everything. I think a Chief sand would have an actual grievance to be like, wait a minute, you're admitting to being distracted as we were trying to set history last year. What's going on here? And I think Kerry Rhodes is probably right. I think that's his way of not admitting that he's lost a step. But I think it takes balls. And it's almost refreshing to hear a guy actually admit, I was distracted. How many athletes through the years, including LeBron James, have said, there's nothing to that? It's always about the basketball. Everything else is side sidebar. Travis Kelsey actually admitting this, I think kind of puts him out there for criticism, don't you think, Doug?
Noah
I do. Again, I didn't hear the entire podcast. So did. Were the TV shows he's talking about last year or he's talking about in previous years? Because he did the big reality show he did was like, yes, 10 years ago. Whatever. More than that. I was about 10 years ago. I was at CBS at the time and where he dated 32 women in the off season. I thought that's what he was referring to. Not to last year.
Devin
No. So he didn't mention any of the TV stuff in the podcast with Taylor yesterday in the New New Heights episode? It was in the GQ article where it was pointed out the FX show and the show that he did on Amazon that those were the shows because guess there's multiple episodes with the Amazon show. And maybe I wasn't familiar with the FX show, but those were specifically pointed out as. As shows that he did the.
Noah
Was it. What Is it something Kelsey. Is it keeping Kelsey. I forget what it's called on the Amazon show, which was. Was pretty good.
Devin
And this is a different Amazon. It was. This was a different. This was like a game show that he hosted that he ended up being the host. But the dating show that he did was. Yeah, that. He wasn't alluding to that. That was a decade or something.
Doug Gottlieb
Are you smarter than a celebrity? Was the Amazon prime show. And I want to say his dating show is he. Didn't he date a woman from every state? Wasn't it the Kelsey 50 or something stupid like that?
Noah
Something like that. Or was it 32? I. I can't remember. Wait, so when was the, when was.
Devin
The game shows chasing Kelsey? I think that game show was last. The last off season. 20, 24.
Noah
Okay, so last 50 women from 50.
Doug Gottlieb
States vie for the heart of a pro football player chasing Kelsey? 2016.
Noah
Yeah. So nine years ago, I was, I was close. I was close to my ears. I remember I interviewed him like he was, you know, you talk about, you talk about a guy who you had, I had no idea would reach superstar status nine years ago. Think about how his life changed when Pat Mahomes became his quarterback.
Doug Gottlieb
We were at the super bowl, maybe it was Los Angeles. I forget which Super Bowl. And Doug and I are prepping for the show and all of a sudden I hear, hey, Doug, Doug. Somebody trying to get Doug's attention who's being walked by a publicist the other way. And I look over, it's Travis Kelsey trying to get Doug Gottlieb's attention as he's walking.
Noah
Because we used, he used to come on all the time and we talked basketball because he played basketball at Cincinnati and we had some like mutual, mutual friends. And you know, I like n to go from that. I have his number. I've never, haven't texted him in years. I have no idea if he has the same number, if he'd even know who, you know, new phone, who dis. But yeah, I mean, meteor, like ridiculous. Ridiculous went from. Yeah, I know. Yeah. To be in the names, you know, in the NFL, non quarterbacks. He's top five in any conversation. Correct?
Doug Gottlieb
Yes.
Noah
And then after this podcast and after, you know, now, obviously a long standing relationship with Taylor Swift, the most known by proxy. So, so that's, that's an unbelievable rise. Unbelievable rise. I'm Doug Gottlieb. He's Dan Byer. Of course, you heard from Jason Stewart as well. This is the Dan Patrick show on Fox Sports Radio. We got a bunch to get to in this hour of the show, including. Well, have the Dodgers. The Dodgers hit rock bottom. It's a great question. And you know, if you don't listen to the Doug Gottlieb show, you don't. Devin
Let's do it.
Noah
Okay. The world has gone upside down. World has gone upside down. The Dodgers can't beat the Angels, and no one can beat the Milwaukee Brewers. John. John Morosi joins us, Fox Sports Radio, MLB Insider. He's a reporter for the MLB Network. He joins us here on the Dan Patrick show on Fox Sports Radio. The brewers are 28 and 4 over the last 32 games. And Mizarowski's missed the last couple starts, right, because he's been on the il. How. How. How did. How has this happened, John?
AZ Fudd
Well, first. First of all, good morning, my friends. I would say this, that as both of you know, well, the great state of Wisconsin is at the center of the sports universe, right? I mean, that's. That's. It starts there.
Noah
It's definitely First Avenue, First Street. It's the nexus of the universe, as Kramer.
AZ Fudd
And actually, I think that that's what the license plates in Wisconsin now say. The nexus of the universe, the center of the sports world. It really is. I tell you what, the brewers have something special going on right now, and a couple things stand out to me. The return of Brandon Woodruff has been, if you look at that stretch that you mentioned, Douglas, it coincides with the arrival of the return from the injured list of Brandon Woodruff. Now, I realize he's a starting pitcher. He pitches once every fifth day, but he does have a way, I think, of stabilizing this entire group and elevating the pitching staff and I think, lessening the burden on everybody else to where they now just go and pitch their game. Look at Quinn Priester. The man just can't lose 11 and 2. He's just, he's winning decisions left and right. Freddy Peralta's pitching like an ace as well. And then, and then with the, with respect to the position players outside of Hoskins and Yelich, they're all in their 20s, they're all young, a lot of them are athletic. Bryce Charang, I think, is one of the most underrated players in the game you've seen now. Isaac Collins is a two sport star from the great state of Minnesota. Look at what he's doing right now. So there's a lot of really good stories for this organization. Excellent gm, excellent manager and Pat Murphy. There's just a lot to like about the way they're playing. And it's all happening at a time where their rivals to the south in Chicago are starting to flip backwards. And that was not the case, by the way. I was, I was at Wrigley over 4th of July and I was saying to myself, the Cubs are going to win this division. I was convinced of it. And the ballpark was rocking. And Pete Carr Armstrong was looking like an MVP candidate, but now he has struggled. Kyle Tucker's has been okay, and the brewers have just simply dominated in that last month and the Cubs have fallen back into second place. And frankly, guys, I just, I do not see a path to where the Cubs are going to finish first in this division right now.
Devin
How about this one? PCA has gone from MVP to MIA as. Thank you very much.
Noah
There you go.
AZ Fudd
There you go.
Devin
I want to, I want to just ask on a bigger picture thing with the brewers, because of the starting pitching, he ain't BSing. Could this be a turn back to the way baseball normally is? Like if you're a, if you're a team that is similar to Milwaukee, you just laid out the deficiencies that we would think they would have in their hitting lineup. But on the mound, they're good. Like, is this, could this be a turn back to maybe where we are relying more on starting pitching than we have over the past few years?
AZ Fudd
Well, I think that you're right, Dan. And, and here's, here's an important point. We talk so much about the Dodgers and how they won the World Series last year and how creative they had to be. They were using bullpen games they wouldn't have won without what Yamamoto gave for them during the course of the postseason and what, when you consider even what Flaherty gave to them as he came in as a trade deadline acquisition, you need to have some guys. It was Evaldi for the Rangers, you go back year by year by year by year. There are certainly cases where, where teams have utilized their bullpen to great effect and won the World Series. But in almost every single one of those examples, and I would actually say in every one of those examples, you've got a starting pitcher who soaks up innings and makes the rest of the symphony go. It's like trying to have a great musical performance at La Scala in Milan, Italy, without a first chair violin. You know, it still sounds fine, but it's not, it's not going to all come together in the end. And you need to have someone's got to be the first chair violin at some point. And I think the brewers right now have two of those guys. And the teams that are having success, by the way, the other team in the National League that I think is going to be dangerous in the playoffs, look at the Phillies. They haven't had Aaron Nola for three months and he's about to come back. And by the way, Christopher Sanchez, if you, if you compare pitch for pitch with Paul Skeens, you could argue that Sanchez should be the silent winner in the National League. So they are really good. And you want to know why the Phillies are where they are and why the Mets are where they are. The Phillies have a better rotation and the Phillies, their position player group is probably a little bit healthier right now, but the rotation is a huge reason why. And in the American League, why have the Mariners all of a sudden taken off? Because they've got a great rotation. So there is certainly room in this game for creativity and finding different ways to, to get 27 outs. But at some point it's going to matter who starting the game for you. And at some point you can be clever, but you're going to eventually run out of pitching if you're, if you're trying to bullpen your way through an entire month or entire six months. And I think what we're seeing right now, majorly baseball, Dan, to your point, is bearing exactly that truth out.
Noah
I would love John Morrisi joining us, Fox Sports Radio, MLB Insider, works for the MLB Network as well. He joins us here in the Dan Patrick Show, FOX Sports Radio. I'd love to talk about the Angels, right? A team that everybody just, you know, the laughing stock in many ways of Major League Baseball because they had Ohtani and Trout and did nothing and here they are close to.500. They sweep the Dodgers and way better than we expect. But let's just be honest, nobody cares, okay? Care about the Dodgers. Now, John, you know Jason Stewart as big and educated a Dodger fan as you're going to find anywhere. And his issue was, why are we holding on it? Like, why aren't we going for it and going and getting some, some big dogs out of the bullpen? Go get the best of the best of the best to win another World Series at the, at the trade deadline.
AZ Fudd
Right.
Noah
Why did Andrew Friedman approach it this way?
AZ Fudd
Well, the answer is, and Friedman has basically said this, he believed that the guys they had coming back and based on the information they had from a medical standpoint as of July 31, said to them that they were going to have an abundance of starting pitching that would then allow you to have a greater abundance of relievers. And I think they believed that Trinen would be better than he has been in terms of his return from the injured list. But right now you're really in a situation where you've got no closer, especially after Stewart landed on the injured list. I mean, right now there's a very, very handy website that I, that I often consult this time of year roster resource, which is part of Fangrass. Right now they have seven relievers, seven relievers on the injured list, relievers Gradall Grove, Kopeck Phillips, Scott Stewart and Yates, 7. That's an entire bullpen worth of injured guys. And that's in addition to the injured starters, which include Gonsel and Hurt, Ryan Sasaki and Stone. That is an entire pitching staff of injured guys. I mean, that's. It is. They won the World Series last year by having to utilize 40 different pitchers. 40. I was on the radio earlier today in Toronto and I made the point that when the Jays won the World Series in 1992, they used 17. 17 back in 92. And it was 40 last year. It is, it, it's not sustainable really now, but. And I say all that. The answer is in, in that information that I just gave you that Andrew Friedman said, we believe that we're going to be healthy by the time October arrives and that provided that we make the playoffs, and I'm paraphrasing here, that we could have as much pitching depth and as good of a pitching staff, 13 guys as we have ever had. That's what he said. So his information says that they're going to get healthier and be able to withstand whatever is to come in the weeks ahead. And let's be fair, today is the first day in more than 100 days that they don't at least have a share of the division lead. So it's not as though they have been bereft of quality pitching for the entire season. They're in second place by a game. So we got to be careful about that. But the short answer is Andrew Friedman believes these guys are going to get healthy and, and he better be right or else there's going to be a lot of questioning by the Dodger fans about why they didn't do more at the deadline.
Devin
Hunter Green came back for the Reds last night. We touched a little on the Mets, little on the Phillies. When you look at the nl, the Mets now just a game up on Cincinnati. And that wild card. Does Cincinnati have enough or do the Mets have enough to hang on? How do you think that final wild card sets out as it seems to be. And you could correct me If I'm wrong, four teams for three spots.
AZ Fudd
Yeah, it is, it is 14 for three spots. And I think, listen, the Reds have as much of a chance as anybody else right now. I mean, I'm talking about that last spot between them and the Mets. The Mets have just not been the same team since Lindor got hit in the toe with a pitch at Dodger Stadium two months ago. It just totally changed their season. He has stayed in the lineup. He is a very tough player. He wants to play, but he's not the same guy right now. And you can understand why. If you're trying to play baseball and play shortstop with a broken toe, you wouldn't be doing too good either. And that's, that's where he's at right now. Meanwhile, the Reds, with Green coming back, they've got all this momentum in Mojo. They've got an excellent manager in Terry Francona. And where did Miguel and Duhar come from? Okay, because he is, he has the DH now for the Reds. He was lost, forgotten about. And all of a sudden he's back on the radar. And he was acquired at the deadline from the A's. And he all of a sudden looks like Elliot De La Cruz when he's, when he's batting from the right side. It's just, it's unbelievable. So they've got now a legit cleanup guy to protect Ellie De La Cruz. Gavin Lux has been able to hit a little higher in the lineup than I thought he would be. Noel Di Marte is a solid player who can move around the diamond for you. I like this team and I think they're the bullpen wise. They've got enough. Pagan is a good closer. They've got some solid guys in front of him. So Terry Francona always seems to know how to get the most out of his roster. And let's be clear about this. The Reds are one game back of the Mets. And the amount of pressure the Mets are facing and dealing with right now is just not even in the same universe as what the Reds are dealing with. The Reds are in a very comfortable situation. They're playing very comfortably, no stress, no pressure. If they make the playoffs, everybody's going to love them. If they miss it, they're not supposed to make the playoffs anyway. Whereas the Mets have the weight of the world. And, and every, every game they lose, people are totaling up their payroll to decide if they're going to be a big bust or not. So it's just, it's a totally different universe. And I, in a situation like that, I tend to say advantage Terry Francona and his guys.
Noah
Miguel Amaya one day off. The IL is going back on the il. It didn't look good as he's, he's trying to run out of play at, at first base. Cubs are already taking on water and they got a big five game series against the brewers at home next week. How much does this set back the Cubs?
AZ Fudd
It is, it's a, it's a big deal because they also, they moved on from John Birdie and they made different decisions with their roster because they expected that Amaya would be healthy. And so they, they now they're calling up Owen Casey, which is in a small parenthetical here, a positive story for Owen is going to make his major league debut in his hometown of Toronto. So like there's that story. But the big picture here is the Cubs are not playing well and they just lost a really important player in Miguel Amaya. Again your heartbreak for him because he just came back. As you point out, Doug, they're, they're not in a good way right now. And we and Dan talked earlier about, about pca. It's just he were realizing the extent to which they were needing Peter Armstrong to be great and Kyle Tucker to be great and since both have have regressed a bit and PCA has progressed a lot, they're just not the same team. They're a good team, but not a great team and they're in the same division as a ball club in Milwaukee that is just playing out of their minds at the moment. It's like you feel like they're not going to lose again. So the Cubs are in a real, they're in a real spot and, and now the other piece of this is they've Got to find a way to at least preserve home field advantage in the first round or else they may, you know, if they are on the road for the wild card series and they end up losing that series, for example, they might, they might not even get a chance to play a game at Wrigley all postseason. Or how about this? What if it's Cubs Dodgers in the wild card round because the brewers are in first place and the Padres are in first place? You might see the situation where that that's the matchup. Cubs, Dodgers. How about that? So that would be quite a story. And honestly, it's not that far fetched based on where the standings look, look right now.
Devin
That would be amazing to be in Chicago, in LA or to sit back in your TV in the U.P. and watch the games. I don't know if you guys have talked about this, but I feel Doug, you have this love for the Upper Peninsula. Morose is a native anytime we can talk.
Noah
He's a.
Devin
You're a Youper. Yes, he is a Youper.
AZ Fudd
I was born in Marquette, Doug. I moved down when I was like two and a half, but we'd always go back pretty much every summer when I was growing up to visit family, friends. And I'm a proud, I like to say I'm a proud dual citizen of Michigan. Born in the up, grew up in the Lower Peninsula, but I love Marquette, God's country up there. Northern Michigan, obviously the alma mater of Mariucci and Izzo and just a gorgeous place there. I was born at Marquette General Hospital with a view of Lake Superior that is as beautiful of a spot you're ever going to find. Presque Isle park is amazing.
Noah
I would just say what percentage of people in the United States know that there's an Upper Peninsula of Michigan?
AZ Fudd
Great question.
Noah
What do we think? Like, what do we think like we did man on the street? 50. 50.
AZ Fudd
I'd say probably less than that, Doug. But that's, but, but like I tell.
Noah
People all the time, like, oh no, I'm in Michigan. Where are you? Michigan. I'm in the Upper Peninsula. Like, what's that? It's amazing at a map.
AZ Fudd
I mean, I'll say that whenever, when we see. When there are different.
Noah
It is a different place now it is a different country.
AZ Fudd
Well, the up and by the way, it's getting more popular remote work. It's almost got like a little Bend, Oregon vibe.
Noah
Yeah. I don't know. You can't. There's no like WI Fi and you can't. There's no cell service. In outside of, you know, the two towns, Marquette and whatever, Michigan Tech, what towns that went in.
AZ Fudd
But listen, listen, just among, I'll make two points. Number one, when they have like the big American flag at like it was like the all star game this year. I said you have not put the proper shape of the up in there. And I felt a little bit sad. I was like, that's my spot, man. You got, you got to get that thing on the flag. That's number one. Number two, off the record, just among us, okay, just among friends here it is the most beautiful place to live, I believe in America. And it will probably only be a best kept secret for so long because it is simply glorious. If you can, as my dad has told me many times, guys, Johnny, if you, if you can deal with snow and you've got a job, it's the best place to live in the world. And he's exactly right about that.
Noah
Feel the same about Green Bay, Wisconsin place.
AZ Fudd
That was, by the way, that was the mall. So, so my parents would have to drive when I, when I was a little kid when they went to the mall it was like an all day excursion. They would drive from Marquette to Green Bay, then drive back. That was, that was the mall trip.
Noah
Well now you got to go to Appleton for the, for the bigger mall. Thanks so much John. We appreciate it.
Devin
Thanks John.

Devin
Yes.
Noah
Okay, great. So normally, hey, this is how we do the show. And then when we have big news and update, we go to Dan Beyer. So let's go to Dan Beyer because there's news on Michigan football.
Devin
Yeah. So Pete Thamel, Dan Wetzel of ESPN reporting that the NCAA has notified the parties at Michigan that they will release their findings and possible punishments for the Wolverine football program tomorrow. So they will find out. And this is tied to the Connor Stallions spying scandal. But the NCAA has wrapped everything up and the punishments, if there are any, will be handed out on Friday.
Noah
And then Harbaugh was suspended for three games. Is that right? Was it three games?
Doug Gottlieb
Seem like it was more.
Devin
Yes. And there was also, there was also, I believe he received a show cause penalty for the COVID For the COVID or the violations during the COVID dead period. There was stuff that was going on there. They also reportedly failed to cooperate with the investigation on both times. It's. I don't, I think everybody's been guessing that's been interested in it. The people that haven't been interested in it don't care about it. And they're just like, all right, move on. Harbaugh's in the NFL. Michigan won the national championship. But within the world of college football, with Michigan, with Ohio State, with Michigan State and those schools tomorrow will be interesting.
Doug Gottlieb
Can I lay out the dynamic just for our listeners who aren't familiar? Dan Byer is a diehard Ohio State fan and then Gottlieb by nature downplays everything. So this story has been a non story to Doug and it's been a huge story to Dan. The is always in the middle.
Noah
My thing is just my thing on football sign stealing. Football sign stealing, right. Is there's a reason they have three guys there doing different signs. They, you, you have to know somebody's trying to steal your signs. You got to now coaching, like we know you have film on everything we do. So do we do hand signals? Do we do calls? You know, like how do you, how do you do it? So granted going to those games is taken up a notch. I also think there's the, there's the, at that level of coaching at that level, at my level, I have to know everything I do. I, we got to do everything, every ounce of the budget, every penny that's paid, I got to handle it. But at that level, I think Jim Harbaugh coached the team and he's doing advanced scouting. He doesn't just go get the information, bring it back. I don't, I'm not micromanaging you how to do you. And he went and did, he went and did a bang up job. But I think they all have guys that do that. They all have guys that do that.
Devin
Do you guys think the story is.
Noah
Elevated at all on what kind of.
Devin
A weird, goofy character Connor Stallions is? I'll tell you what, I think it's downplayed because of the lack of power by the NCAA that we feel that they have.
Noah
So what I like, here's the, here's the reality to it now. If they say, hey, you got a scholarship limitation, it doesn't matter anymore. Everybody's got the same roster limits and if the NCAA doesn't, like, give somebody a scholarship, your collective can just pay for it. Same thing, right? Like, yeah, it's expensive, but same thing. So you can't really limit scholarships. The only thing you can limit is can they play in the College Football Playoff? And, oh, yeah, by the way, most of the things outside of punishments that the NCAA has done have been struck down in courts. So that's probably what's next. If they try and say, hey, we're going to keep them out of the College Football Playoff, Michigan's gonna sue. Because everybody who seems to sue the NCAA wins, wins.
Devin
A documentary was a piece of work. Unreal. And I'm not in a good way, by the way. People thought it was. Oh, it was awesome. Congress stallions are the best.
Noah
Wrong.
Devin
But we'll find out tomorrow, Doug.

Podcast Summary: The Dan Patrick Show
Episode: Hour 3 – Lifestyle Changes Distracted Travis Kelce, Jon Paul Morosi
Release Date: August 14, 2025
Host: Dan Patrick
Guests: Doug Gottlieb, Jon Paul Morosi, and others
Duration: Approximately 56 minutes
In this episode of The Dan Patrick Show, host Dan Patrick delves into the recent developments surrounding Travis Kelce, the renowned NFL tight end, and his high-profile relationship with pop superstar Taylor Swift. The discussion explores whether lifestyle changes resulting from this relationship have impacted Kelce's performance on the field. Joined by sports analysts Doug Gottlieb and Jon Paul Morosi, the conversation offers diverse perspectives on the intersection of celebrity relationships and professional athletics.
The episode begins with a discussion about Taylor Swift's recent appearance on a podcast with Kelsey, which also featured Travis Kelce. The hosts analyze the timing and purpose behind Swift's podcast appearance, pondering whether it serves to bridge her fanbase with the football world or primarily to promote her latest album.
Noah and Devin explore the authenticity of the relationship, suggesting that both Swift and Kelce are genuinely supportive of each other's careers without ulterior motives for publicity.
The conversation shifts to whether Kelce's relationship with Swift has distracted him from his professional responsibilities. Devin expresses initial concerns after watching the two-hour podcast episode, questioning if Kelce's media engagements have affected his focus.
Noah counters by highlighting Kelce's achievements despite the increased media presence, suggesting that any perceived distractions have not significantly hindered his performance.
Doug Gottlieb provides a nuanced view, commending Kelce for admitting that his media responsibilities might have impacted his performance. He finds it refreshing to hear a top athlete acknowledge potential distractions openly.
Devin adds that if Kelce's performance remains strong, any concerns about distractions will likely fade. He points out Kelce's proactive approach in addressing issues with a speed and agility coach during the offseason.
Noah emphasizes the inevitability of public scrutiny but maintains that genuine relationships won't be derailed by negative commentary from social media bots or casual critics.
The hosts discuss the broader implications of high-profile relationships in sports, considering how media narratives can shape public perception. They agree that while skepticism exists, the authenticity of Kelce and Swift's relationship is evident to those who engage directly with their content.
The episode concludes with a consensus that while lifestyle changes stemming from Travis Kelce's relationship with Taylor Swift have attracted media attention, there is no concrete evidence to suggest a detrimental impact on Kelce's athletic performance. The honest and open discussion by Kelce, as highlighted by Doug Gottlieb, adds credibility to the notion that the relationship is a positive influence rather than a distraction. The hosts emphasize the importance of focusing on Kelce's continued performance and the genuine support within the relationship.
Towards the latter part of the episode, the conversation briefly shifts to baseball, specifically analyzing the Milwaukee Brewers' performance and roster strategies. However, these discussions are secondary to the primary focus on Travis Kelce and lifestyle changes.
Furthermore, there are mentions of updates on Michigan football and NCAA investigations into spying scandals, but these topics are not elaborated upon in this summary as they fall outside the episode's main theme.
The Dan Patrick Show effectively balances insightful analysis with engaging conversation, providing listeners with a comprehensive look at how high-profile relationships intersect with professional sports. By incorporating expert opinions and personal perspectives, the episode offers a nuanced understanding of Travis Kelce's situation, reassuring fans that lifestyle changes, when managed well, do not necessarily impede athletic excellence.
