The Dan Patrick show on FOX Sports Radio. Final hour on this Wednesday. Dan and the danettes. Dan Patrick, an update on Bill Belichick. Is he going to be chapel Bill and go to Carolina? We'll talk to Albert Breer, the Monday morning quarterback. He'll join us coming up in a little bit. Also, do the Eagles have a problem again with quarterback and wide receivers? So we'll talk to Albert877 3 DP show email address dpanpatrick.com Twitter handle it DP Show as far as headlines here, college football portal is open for business. And last night the Bucks dropped the Magic, Thunder dropped the Mavericks. That's the NBA cup. Yankees sign left hander Max Freed and the Nationals get the number one draft pick. Say good morning if you're watching on Peacock. That's our streaming partner. Download the app if you haven't done so. And our radio affiliates around the country. We were talking last hour at the end of last hour about the 30 for 30 documentary on the New York sack exchange, the New York jets. And there is some footage that has surfaced and this happened in 2023. And it was a confrontation between Mark Gastineau and Brett Favre. And the reason why we bring it up and it was brought up in this 30 for 30 is Michael Strahan sacked Brett Favre at the end of a game in 2002 and as a result, Mark Astono, who was the single season sack leader with 22, lost it to Michael Strahan, who came in with 21 and a half and end up with 22 and a half. Here is a little bit of the conversation. The confrontation with Mark Gastineau and Brett Favre. You tell him about a long time ago. At least I saw you, right? How you doing when you fell down for him? I'm gonna get my sack back. I'm gonna get my sack back. Dude, you probably would hurt me. Well, I don't care. You hurt me. You hu.
Brett Favre
You hear me?
Dan Patrick
Yeah, I hear you. You really hurt me. You hurt me.
Brett Favre
Brett, we gotta get back to this.
Albert Breer
Brett, I'm sorry.
Dan Patrick
So that they're at a memorabilia show. Favre is clearly shaken by this because he's seeing Mark Gastineau. He has no idea that he's harbored this grudge for two decades here. But Favre goes on to say hey. And he posted this on social media. I booted out of a run thinking it would be wide open, Saul Strahan standing there and ducked down. The game was over. No need for me to do anything spectacular. It probably wasn't Michael's best sack or tackle for a loss. No, it wasn't. Because if the game is over, why are you bootlegging out of a play and running towards Michael Strahan? Brett, it's concocted. It was scripted so not, hey, I'm going to bootleg. Yeah. I want my quarterback bootlegging, running right to Michael Strahan here. Mark Gaston is on the sidelines. He thinks he's going to hold on to the record. And then Favre does this in the final minute of the game. He says, in a different game or situation, I would have made a bigger effort to avoid the sack. But at no point was I thinking hurting Mark Gaston. No. Maybe it crossed my mind to help Strahan. I didn't think it through. That wasn't my forte at the time. Well, you can say that about other things. I just wanted to have see how the sack king would elevate. Well. Yeah. So I think he goes on to say a few other things here, but no malice. Mark was a great player. Let's see. Great deal of respect for Mark. Hope one day joins me in the hall of Fame. He earned it. Look at his numbers. He eclipsed 20 sacks twice at 19 in another year. Okay. But Brett Favre did gift wrap something for Michael Strahan. As a result, he took it away from Mark Gastineau. And Mark is not in a good position in not a good situation. And when you see the documentary or even this clip, you can tell that he doesn't look healthy. And it. And it's hurt him and it's staying with him. And I don't know if it's kept him out of the hall of Fame because he had a six year run. The only guy who had a better six year run sack wise was Reggie White. And this is since they started keeping sack totals. Gastineau was a force and he did what he was paid to do, get sacks. But Favre did gift wrap that. And you can hear the hurt in Mark Gastineau's voice. And he also is this far of taking a dive for Strahan. Is that from Gastineau as well? Marvin? Okay, here's Mark Gastineau talking about Favre taking a dive. Anybody will tell you, Brett Favre took a dive. And you know what? She knows that he knows and everybody knows it. I didn't know what had happened. The NFL should have stopped that and said, listen, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. That's not a sack.
Brett Favre
He took my record away from me.
Dan Patrick
He's right. And I think, you know, we, we don't even think about that. I haven't thought about it. Didn't think about it. Didn't think Mark was bothered by it. Everybody loves Strahan. So nobody's going, oh, he never should have that. And look, people loved Farre. Nowadays you can have questions about him, certainly what he's done in his home state. But at the time people loved Far and that's all fav man. He's that. He's a good dude, man. He's doing it for his friend there. Not realizing what he's doing to Mark Gastineau in the process. But I look forward to seeing it. I was very fortunate to be around those jets at that time and that was a wonderful nickname. You know, that's when your front four was the front four and you had to have a nickname for them. New York sack exchange. Purple people eaters. Might have been the best one with the Vikings. That was awesome. Doomsday defense. I mean there were a lot. Yes. Todd Fearsome for some. Fearsome forsome with the Rams was great. I still think that Deacon Jones is the all time sack leader. I'm shocked that the NFL with NFL films has never gone back to register sacks for Deacon Jones. I don't think there was anybody more menacing, more physical, nasty than Deacon Jones. Now Mean Joe Green was up there. There's a lot of great players. Deacon Jones has done a disservice because I'm going to guess he had 200 sacks. Just a rough guess. 200 sacks, maybe more. But they didn't keep sack totals back then. Yes, Mark, Deacon Jones was scary when he was old.
Brett Favre
I couldn't imagine him in his prime.
Dan Patrick
Oh, man, watching those teams play. Merlin Olsen. Was it Lamar Lundy who was the other? Rosie Taylor Was the other one. Rosie Greer. Rosie Greer. And Rosie Greer was I think RFK's bodyguard.
Albert Breer
Correct.
Dan Patrick
When he was murdered. Not.
Albert Breer
Don't leave with that on the resume. Go with the football.
Dan Patrick
No, no, no. But, but, but. Yeah, yeah. Rosie Greer. Yeah. Yes, Paulin.
Albert Breer
They did go back with Deacon Jones and do their best to look at it. And because he, I think he had 173 official sacks, the NFL only counts them from 82 on that the term sack became used. Deacon Jones, they went back and looked and he's at like 247 or something like that. He's well above.
Dan Patrick
Yeah. It's not even close. Yep. And they played less games.
Albert Breer
They had less passing attempts as well. Less chance for a sack.
Dan Patrick
If I looked at percentage of sacks to percentage of passes and I'm wondering if they ever do this with TJ Watt. The number of sacks with the number of pass attempts that he faced, like I'd love to see what, what are the numbers there of who was the greatest you know, per pass sack artist in history because, well, let's take Deacon Jones out of it, but back, you know, in the 70s, 60s, you're throwing it maybe 15 times because you ran the ball. But imagine that you have that many sacks, you're getting to the quarterback a couple times a game.
Albert Breer
Yeah, Paulie, this is an awkward topic, but with Saquon Barkley looking at the possible all time rushing record for a season, O.J. simpson's not going to get any love on this topic. And O.J. simpson clearly has the record for most yards per game in any NFL season ever. He ran for 143 yards a game in a 14 game season. That's 10 yards more than Jim Brown, Walter Payton, who are second and third and 12 yards more than Eric Dickerson who's considered the champion.
Dan Patrick
Couple of phone calls in here. Let me see George in Texas. Hi George, thanks for holding. What's on your mind? Hey Dan, I got an idea for a show in your final season. Oh, or year I should say. Okay, how about airing the very first show you did as you and the guys sit on the couch and watch it and you can talk about what you were thinking leading up into that show and what do you tell me how you think you did performance wise and what were you thinking after the show? Did you think it was gonna last this long? Oh, I thought it would last but I didn't know like it would be this magnitude. I, we were doing it in my attic. So if we're going to analyze the first show we did in the attic or the first show we did where we were on DirecTV, that might be more interesting because we're actually looking at the show. Maybe, maybe during the look ins on the last day, maybe we could do some excerpts of that and look back on that. Morgan in Maryland. Hi Morgan, welcome back. Hey Dan. I wanted to comment on the Mark Gasano situation. So no matter how you feel about how the sack happened, it happened. Does it make him feel like he.
Brett Favre
Maybe he's a bit of a sore.
Dan Patrick
Loser and like he seems like he's consumed his entire life with the loss.
Brett Favre
Of that sack record.
Dan Patrick
And it's more sad to me than anything that now it's, he's having all these issues about it now there's a 30 for 30 and I just, I don't want, I wouldn't want to live my life like that with the loss of something like that when he could have been, you know, great. But that was his identity, Morgan. That's the thing that's all my mark was known as the sack guy, the sack dance guy. That, that's what he's known for. I just didn't know that he was harboring a grudge for that amount of time. And the fact that fav gift wrap a sack right in front of Gastonau in the final regular season game and he loses his sack record that's since been tied by T.J. watt. It's hard for us to understand what athletes think, what they go through, what's important to them after the fact. Not all of them leave everything behind. I mean, there are players. Scott Norwood, you're not leaving it behind. He'd love to imagine he goes out, somebody is going to say, hey, wide right everywhere. So it stays with them. We move on. They don't always move on. Curtis in Illinois. Hi, Curtis, what's on your mind?
Brett Favre
Morning, D.P.
Dan Patrick
After watching that awkward confrontation from Gaston Favre, I think in the court of public opinion, nobody really cares because gas no didn't seem likable. Nobody likes Farve anymore. So I went back and all you can find is the video of like a 20 second clip of the play. So I couldn't really remember the down distance and the scenario of it all. But I guess my question is, do you really think he just straight up gave Strahan that sack? Yeah. Matter because nobody seemed to care for the last 20 years. Well, I don't know. It didn't, it didn't matter to me, but it mattered to Gaston. Oh, so that's, that's what we're factoring in is it mattered to him. With me, I remembered that he gift wrapped it, but it's, I moved on from it. Yeah.
Albert Breer
Pauline, what if this were twisted and Michael Strahan had the record and some very dislikable defensive end who was a me first guy broke the record by a quarterback who he knew giving him a free sack. Imagine Michael Strahan was the victim of this. Who was beloved.
Dan Patrick
Well, it's different now with social media and how many people would it be critical you had the announcer saying, hey, Favre took a dive there. He gift wrapped. Phil Sims, I think was saying he basically gave Michael Strahan the sack. So it did happen. At the time it was like, okay, he got the record. That's just far being a football player. And hey, go ahead, get the record. You can do it against me and we'll smile about it. Yes. You know, I mean, I think to.
Albert Breer
Be fair, a little bit, I guess.
Dan Patrick
To Brett Favre, if I could swallow that crap Sandwich. What he says does make sense though, that. I mean, the game was over there. There was really nothing left to play for. He boots out and sees Michael Strahan right there. Yeah. You go down, what is he going to get hit for? Well, no, he shouldn't have been bootlegged. That's not the craziest thing. No. Why did you take a knee? The game's over. He says, what. Why is he running at like he bootlegged to Michael Strahan? Sought, plain and simple, Take a knee. Why do I want Brett Favre running out where he could get sacked by Michael Stray? It doesn't make any sense whatsoever. He gift wrapped it. I get it. You know, I get it. Kevin in Vegas. Hi, Kev. Hey, Dan.
Brett Favre
How you doing?
Dan Patrick
My question for you is, and I'm wondering, like, what is it that gastro, what did he want from Brett Favre? When we. I seen the clip yesterday and I was wondering, do he want Brett Farr to sack? Do he want to sack Brett Farr? I'm trying to figure out what he wants. No, he, he actually wanted that sack back. He didn't want to sack Brett Favre. Favre thinks he's joking. Hey, I want my sack. Well, you might hurt me. So he thinks he's going to sack him right there. And then he realizes, no, he wants the sack back that you gave to Michael Strahan. We can't understand what they go through, what this means to them. And for Mark Gastonau, not in the hall of Fame. Maybe he think he lost his, a piece of his identity there. And as much as we go, oh, you're being a baby or poor sport, I mean, they live this, this is, this is their lives. It's not ours. We can't relate to this. Yes. Martin, do you think he would have.
Brett Favre
Had more consideration for the hall of Fame had this record had kept going on until TJ Watt broke it just a couple years ago?
Dan Patrick
I, you know what? Albert Breer, I don't know if Albert's a Hall of Fame voter, but I, I can ask him that. He's going to join us coming up. Because sometimes you have to spoon feed voters. Hey, you gotta understand this. And you know what? As much as it's not part of a category, likability goes a long way. It does. Likability. Voting for somebody, maybe looking out for them a little more than you would because you like them, they accommodated you. It's hard not to like certain people. Soft spot in your heart. Hey, that guy was always awesome. I mean, there are people who were in the hall of Fame. You know, I've had somebody say, is John Smoltz really a Hall of Famer? How much is likability? And I go, well, he was unbelievable as a starting pitcher and great as a reliever, but they thought, well, likability. He's broadcasting the Fox games. I go, I I don't read into it that much. I tried not to let that cloud my judgment because I got, I never got along with a few guys who were in the hall of Fame. I didn't let it cloud my judgment. It's like the other still hall of Famers, but I can only speak for myself. We'll take a break. Update on Bill Belichick and is there any more movement? Are we actually closer to Bill Belichick becoming the head coach at North Carolina? We'll talk to Albert Breer, the Monday morning quarterback next. More phone calls coming up. A lot of people have feelings about the Mark Gastineau Brett Favre confrontation. It's a 30 for 30 on the mothership. It's the New York sack exchange. Albert Breer, Monday morning quarterback, senior NFL reporter. He's at the league meetings in Irving, Texas. Let me ask you about that Gastonault Brett Favre confrontation. Go back to 02 when it happened. I don't know how big of a deal it was when, you know, Favre gif wrapped that sack for Michael Strahan.
Brett Favre
I mean, I think everybody sort of saw it as a cute thing, if I remember right. Right. Like I was just out of college and I, I like, I definitely remember everybody laughing about it after, you know, like, I never thought that. I never thought somebody take such offense to it. And then for Brett to come out and apologize the way that he did on Twitter in like putting like real life context on it, you know what I mean? And like saying like how it actually might have cost cast no money. I hadn't thought about that aspect of it. It was weird because like I think, I don't know if you got this feeling watching it Dan, but like when I, when I saw it like at first like five had that look on his face like, like he thought he was joking. And then like, like slowly started to realize like no, this guy's actually serious about this. Which I think everybody who watched it thought like, okay, like is he going to at some point here kind of like let us guard down and just say I'm just messing around. Yeah. You know what I mean?
Dan Patrick
Yeah.
Brett Favre
So it was just a weird, weird, weird conference.
Dan Patrick
Okay. What if whoever the Eagles play at the end of the season and Saquon Barkley has a chance to break Eric Dickerson's all time record?
Brett Favre
Yep.
Dan Patrick
And all of a sudden they let him have his seven yard run.
Brett Favre
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
Anybody going to have a problem with that?
Brett Favre
I mean I don't think any of the current players will, you know, I mean maybe Eric Dick. I wouldn't have said Eric Dickerson would but like maybe he will.
Dan Patrick
I would if I'm Eric Dickerson and be like wait, you're just going to let him run and break my record? I get I'm right. It's trying to understand what these records mean to these players.
Brett Favre
I, you know, I think the other thing is too is sort of interesting about it is like how all these guys are friends now and it's been that way for a long time. It's not like that's new, you know what I mean? Like, but I do think like the athletes from my childhood, like, you know, I, for me like the one I remember is like all the basketball rivalries, how those teams genuinely seem to hate each other. You know the Pistons and the Celtics and the Bulls and the Lakers, like they genuinely seem to not like each other. And at some point along the line that changed. And I think, I don't know, like what, what do you think you got better handle on this than me? Probably like late 90s maybe somewhere in there like it started to be like these guys all had the same agents.
Dan Patrick
Or the same I think Magic, Magic and Isaiah. I think that, I think that changed when you give each other a kiss on the cheek for a jump ball and you're playing in an NBA finals. You got my attention there of okay, maybe it, maybe it's not the Bulls Pistons rivalry. And it felt like there was a little, it was okay to be friends with somebody even though you wanted to beat them.
Brett Favre
Right. So like I think that that's sort of, I mean I think that's probably the divide here, too, right? Like, is like that. Like, to use your example, like, no one in 1984 was giving Eric Dickerson those seven yards. No one was giving Mark Gaston, oh, the extra sack, you know, and I mean, Fav and Strahan, everybody knew, like, how friendly those two were, you know what I mean? So could I see. And I'd have to look up who the Eagles are playing in week 18. I don't have it right in front of me, but, you know, could I see, I don't know, like a defensive coach who knows Saquon saying, like, yeah, we'll, we'll. We'll cook this one for you a little bit. Certainly that could happen. Like, that's. I think it's just like sort of a change in the relationship between players on different teams over the last 30 or 40 years.
Dan Patrick
All right, help me understand Chapel, Bill here with North Carolina, like, I haven't heard that one.
Brett Favre
That's pretty good.
Dan Patrick
Yeah. What do we, what, what, what's, what's holding this up?
Brett Favre
I think, I think money right now is a factor, like how much you're going to pay him, how much you're going to resource the program, what you're going to be able to give him from an NIL standpoint, all that. Like, I, I also, like in the back of my head, you know, because I, I had a feeling like something could happen last night, and now this is starting to drag out a little bit. So, you know, there's always that in the back of your head, like, does. Is he just making sure before, before he does something that, like, some NFL team isn't going to call and say, like, well, wait a minute, Bill, like, maybe we can't guarantee anything, but you might want to wait a few weeks here. You know what I mean? Like, could that happen? I think that's certainly possible, too, because I think his preference probably still is to stay in the NFL.
Dan Patrick
But I thought that this was basically the NFL saying, bill, we don't want you.
Brett Favre
No, I would say, here's the way I would look at it. I think the simplest, most compact way to explain it is Bill was stunned by the lack of interest last year, right? Like, so you had, you had six jobs open, not including New England, which obviously was the one that let him go. And he only got interest really, from one team. And then the bureaucracy of that team got in the way of him getting that job. And so now, after a year, he's got the 30,000 foot view of the league. He's Gotten to see it the way a lot of these teams operate, take a closer look at like how each team is affected by all the factors inside their organizations. And he's looking at the jobs that are open and it's like, okay, like, so if I go to Chicago, I got to work for Kevin Warren and with Ryan polls, if I go to the Jets, I've got to work with Woody Johnson. And I think it's like sort of this calculus of like, every team's not going to want me because that's the way it was last year. And of the ones that do want me, am I going to want them? You know, like, is that, like, is that path to the right job going to be there for me? And can I count on that? And I think Bill badly wants to coach next year. And so, you know, I like, I think he sees that it's like sort of a narrow path to the perfect situation where things are set up exactly the way that he wants it with an NFL team. Meanwhile, you know, I think, you know, over the last two, three months, he and the people around him have done a lot of research on college jobs and what those look like. And I think what they found is that it's closer to the NFL than it ever has been before. The challenges are, and they may have an advantage because nil is salary cap, because transfer portal is free agency, and because you might be able to get things up and running faster. I've heard a lot of people make the recruiting argument, right, Dan? Like, I'm sure, you know, you've heard that, right? Like, does he want to go into an 18 year old's house. 18 year old's house and recruit. Do you know how many of those visits Deion Sanders.
Dan Patrick
They don't do that. They don't.
Brett Favre
Zero.
Dan Patrick
Yes. They don't do that. All of a sudden you go, mom and dad, Bill Belichick's on a zoom call. Hey, Tommy, just want to say, you know, come on in. Who's more likely to coach in the NFL, Dion or Belichick next season?
Brett Favre
I think Belichick. I think Belichick. I like. I think Dion. I think Dion will be back at Colorado next year unless, like Florida State comes open. But I think, I think Dion probably be back at Colorado next year. I. Bill, I think, I mean, I think he could do a deal with North Carolina today. I think he could pull out of that today. You know, I think that all things are sort of on the table today. I think. I think all things are on the table. I think Again, I think his preference is to coach in the NFL. But, like, I don't think he wants to put it this way. I don't think he wants to walk into a BLEEP show where he doesn't think he's got a great chance to win and suffer the indignity of being 15 wins away from Don Shula and not being able to get there because of the environment that he's working in. Does that make sense?
Dan Patrick
Yes. Yes.
Brett Favre
So I think he wants Shula's record. He's a historian of the game. I think it's BS that he like, I think he wants the record.
Dan Patrick
Yeah. But the reason why there's an opening is because that team has been a BLEEP show. Like, he goes into Jacksonville. Does he.
Brett Favre
Which I think is what he start. I think what that. That's what he's starting to realize.
Dan Patrick
Yes.
Brett Favre
I'm not saying, like, I'm not saying, like a BLEEP show, like, is, is it a BLEEP show that's going to remain a BLEEP show after. Like, are the reasons for it being a BLEEP show still in place when you're walking in, or are you gonna have the opportunity to clean it up? You know what I'm saying?
Dan Patrick
And thank you. He may look at it BLEEP show. I appreciate you.
Brett Favre
Yeah, he may. He may have like, he may, like, if he goes into a place where it's like, we're clearing the decks for you, Bill, and it was a BLEEP shovel. We're going to give you every resource to fix it versus, like, another place where maybe some of the people who are responsible for the BLEEP show are still going to be part of football decisions. Those are two very different things.
Dan Patrick
Talking Albert Breer Monday morning quarterback senior NFL reporter Do the Vikings have a dilemma at quarterback?
Brett Favre
Yes.
Dan Patrick
Yeah. Is it a good dilemma?
Brett Favre
It's a champagne problem. It's a shampoo. There's a Dom Perry on problem. Look like, I think we need to stop it with, like, expecting the other shoe to drop with Sam Darnold. He's just a really good player, you know, who was in a bad situation. We saw Geno Smith and the renaissance of his career in Seattle. It'd be hard for any quarterback to overcome some of the things that Gino and Sam went through over that period of time in New York. And I think, you know, what you're seeing is the nature versus nurture thing play out in real time. And, you know, I, it's 11 games, I believe where he's had a triple digit passer rating. That's a franchise record. He had the highest pass rating in the history of the franchise on Sunday. Yes, part of it stays thrown to Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison, but part of it is that he's becoming a really good player and he's with a coach that, that, that that's built an offense that works for him. And Kevin O'Connell deserves a ton of credit. So I think what's tricky about this one is they love where JJ McCarthy was Dan in August when he got hurt, so. And they really believe in him. The problem is that you like now, like, it's just as far as where he's going to be in May, in June, in July, like you're projecting. You have, you, you haven't gotten to on the bench over September and October and November and December. And so you are to some degree projecting where he's going to be and when you've got a team that's clearly in a window where it can win. Right now, do you owe it to the veteran players to at least give yourself the insurance policy of bringing Sam Darnold back for a year on the franchise tag, or do you look at it and say, we believe enough in JJ McCarthy, this is going to work out. We believe that we're going to be able to get him up and running the same way we were able to get Sam Darnold up and running. And we love Sam Darnold, but we want to have the advantage of having the quarterback on the rookie contract. So love you, Sam, rooting for you. Go find another team to play for. It's, it's an interesting question, you know, and I do think the franchise tag is it's going to be over $40 million for quarterbacks this year. So, like, are you willing to pay a $40 million tab to make sure that you're buttoned up at the most important position on the field with a team that's ready to contend in the.
Dan Patrick
Here and the now the Eagles situation.
Brett Favre
Yep.
Dan Patrick
Is there something there? Is this, you know, Jalen Hurts and A.J. brown, I mean, is this a big deal?
Brett Favre
Yeah, I, you know, I just think, look like, I think Jalen Hurts is a warrior of a football player and he brings a lot to the table. Is he going to be like sort of the den leader for the offense? No. And, you know, I think his personality is such, where it's, he's not the warmest person in the world, you know, so I don't think he's the guy who is gonna stand there and put his arm around A.J. brown and say, don't worry about it, buddy. We'll get you next time, you know, And I think, like, the way that Jalen carries himself, and again, he's not. He's not a bad guy, but I do think it's. I do think it wears on people sometimes, and I think it's worn on people who've been around him. And, you know, so he and AJ Had a really close relationship, you know, but having a close relationship when you're on different teams and you see each other once in a while is different than having a close relationship when you're around the guy every day. And so I think it's something that can be worked out because they've got a head coach in Nick Sirianni who's very emotionally intelligent, I would say, and, like, really has the ability to manage people. And so I think they're going to work it out the same way. They've worked a lot of things out there over the last year to get to the point where they're, you know, now 11 and 2 and one of the best teams in football, but it's not nothing.
Dan Patrick
Safe travels. Albert, always great to talk to you.
Brett Favre
Awesome. Thanks, Dan.
Dan Patrick
That's Albert Breer, Monday morning quarterback. You know, it is interesting that, you know, Belichick could take the job or turn down the job. I don't think anybody would be surprised at this point if he did either one of those. But I don't think you go, man, I'm an NFL coach. I'm going to go to Jacksonville. And automatically you make Jacksonville a contender. The Carolina thing is just interesting. I'm just curious why other universities haven't reached out. I would. I would have him do an assessment of my program. Like, the worst thing that could happen to Carolina if they don't get him, or maybe it's the best thing if they don't get him. They still got all this research, all this data that he did on North Carolina, but, you know, what are you going to pay? What's our collective. How much money do I have? We're a basketball school, basketball country. But I think he wants to coach. Does he want to teach? Because that's part of being a college coach, is you got to teach. You get to the NFL, maybe not teaching as much. All right, we'll take a break. When we come back, more phone calls. We'll play in or out. You're either in or out. We'll tell you what's in store tomorrow. This day in sports history. After this, be sure to catch the live edition of the Dan Patrick show, weekdays at 9am Eastern, 6am Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.

Brett Favre
I hear what's happening.
Dan Patrick
I hear everybody calling, talking about the disrespect to Mark Gaston over respected his breath park situation. But I remember watching that game distinctly when it happened. And I didn't see so much of disrespect to Mark Gaston though, as much as it was a disrespect to the game itself. Could you imagine Michael Jordan just giving up a record or Tom Brady just giving up a record? So when I think about that, I'm like, this is more indicative of the fact that Brett Favre was just one of those types of dudes where I just, I questioned his competitiveness to where why would you want to just give that record up? Well, I, I don't think I could question his competitiveness in that moment. He was just being a friend. He knows Michael. He liked Michael. He had his big smile on his face when he gets sacked. He, you know, he probably bootlegged and didn't tell anybody else. He went out there, had no blocks, no blocking. He walked right into Michael Strahan, that's all. So did he gift rap? Yes. At the time I didn't think a big deal other than people and people were critical of Brett and also Michael Strahan of that really wasn't a sack. It wasn't a big deal. Like things are now with social media, it just, it just grows. It's an avalanche. Eric in LA. Hi Eric, what's on your mind?
Brett Favre
5, 8 and a hard 180.
Dan Patrick
Listening to Gaston reminded me a lot.
Brett Favre
Of listening to Joe Frazier in interviews decades after his last fight with Ali.
Dan Patrick
And how much the way Ali treated.
Brett Favre
Him really impacted him his whole life.
Dan Patrick
It something Joe Frazier never got over. It hurt him deeply that here is one black man making fun of another black man. And Joe Frazier just couldn't understand it. He was. He didn't want to be his punching bag. And he was. He was the butt of the jokes with Ali. I think Muhammad, later in his life, kind of came around, and they became friendlier, I believe. I remember talking to Joe Frazier long, long, long time ago. And I think he wanted Ali's respect. I think he was just asking for that. Like, hey, I beat you. Like, respect me. And when they went toe to toe, I mean, Ali gave him everything he had. And Joe went toe to toe with Ali. And back then, you were going 15 rounds. Yes, Marv.
Brett Favre
Fight of the century at the garden in 71.
Dan Patrick
It was pretty big. Was that. It was huge. Were they both undefeated, or was it.
Brett Favre
Just like the undisputed. Like, I'm trying to figure out, was.
Dan Patrick
He coming back from his suspension or. Okay. And it was racially divided. It felt like white people rooting for Joe Frazier just because Ali was a draft dodger and he's this braggadocious kind. I mean. But it felt like America. That was the tenseness of that fight. And it was closed circuit. I didn't get to stay up. And then I just remember waking up the next morning, and it's like, joe Frazier beat Muhammad Ali. Let's play in or out. You're either in or out.
Albert Breer
Paul, you guys know how to play? At the end of the statement, say, I'm in or out on this concept.
Dan Patrick
Okay, first one.
Albert Breer
I can't get enough random, meaningless college football games.
Dan Patrick
I'm in. I'm in.
Albert Breer
Yeah, sure, I'm in. Okay, so what are you gonna watch on those nights?
Brett Favre
I'll find something.
Dan Patrick
There's a couple games I'll watch, but.
Brett Favre
I'm not gonna be, like, day and.
Dan Patrick
Night, staring at the tv, watching some memes.
Albert Breer
None of them are during the daytime. I would be cool if a record were gifted to me. In or out. I would be cool if a record were given to me.
Dan Patrick
I'm out.
Albert Breer
Great respect.
Dan Patrick
You got every single one of those sacks. I think that the Brett Favre Mark Estin. Oh, he gave him the sack thing is drastically overblown.
Albert Breer
But he was going to get it.
Dan Patrick
He got all of the other ones.
Albert Breer
Leading up to that.
Dan Patrick
I don't know. What's the big deal? Yeah, but he wasn't going to get that. He was given that in the final seconds of the game. I don't really believe they drew up a play to make sure he got that. Oh, Gosh, I do. 100. I don't believe that at all. Because. Because knowing Favre, Favre would think, hey, it'll be cool. Hey, I'll, I, I'll bootleg and, you know, he'll be able to sack me. He had no reason to. To have it run a bootleg. Zero in that situation. Do I think he did it because he's friends with Mike? Yes. Marvin in around. I'm out. Todd, you want an award? If somebody's going to gift it to. I'm out on that. Okay, what else do you have?
Albert Breer
I'm also out. If Sam Darnold isn't franchised by the Vikings, his new contract with ever team he joins will be worth more than $120 million in total value. I'm in.
Dan Patrick
I'm out. I'm out. I'm out, too. I'm probably in. I think somebody's going to spend some money on him.
Albert Breer
Okay, weigh in. Here's one. The Mets will not win a World Series in the next 10 years.
Dan Patrick
I'm in. That's quick. Well, somebody who hates the Mets. Marvin, do the Mets win a World Series in 10 years? No, Todd, they will win one in.
Brett Favre
The next 10 years.
Dan Patrick
I'll say they'll win one.
Albert Breer
Last one. If I were in my 20s and single, I would like to date a celebrity, assuming I'm not famous, just a civilian.
Dan Patrick
All right. Todd, would you want to date a celebrity?
Brett Favre
Yes.
Dan Patrick
Seaton. Yeah, of course. Marvin.
Brett Favre
I'm in.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, I'm in, too. Like, what's the downside other than for the celebrity themselves if they have to date me?
Albert Breer
I wonder, like, if you went deeper, would you be self conscious about what they are, what they do and what you aren't doing?
Dan Patrick
No, I'd be like, all right, cool.
Albert Breer
Who's the name that pops in your head that might be attainable when you were, let's say when you were in your 20s?
Dan Patrick
Oh, I don't think anybody was obtainable for me. Well, just based on lived experience.
Albert Breer
None.
Dan Patrick
None.
Brett Favre
Yeah, I was out.
Dan Patrick
Zero. Yeah. Yeah, I. There. No, I was.
Albert Breer
I was obtainable like, Like Jan Brady. No, you couldn't pull Jan Brady back in the 70s.
Dan Patrick
Jan Brady was huge.
Albert Breer
Not in that family. She was. She was like a B minus in that.
Dan Patrick
She was an A plus. In any other family, Marsha was a plus. Yeah, they were all Marsha.
Brett Favre
Marsha.
Dan Patrick
Getting anybody. Yes. When I was in my 20s, I spent a handful of hours with Jennifer Love Hewitt and I was like, oh, yeah, let's just see. Let's just see what happens.
Albert Breer
I essentially drooled and threw up all over myself for the entire time that I was with her.
Dan Patrick
I just. I couldn't have been more of an idiot. And that's how it goes. When I tried to do that. Okay. It was terrible. Okay. I was a, like, stumbling, mumbling idiot. And it was like, oh, okay. Later. And that's in or out? In or out? Barry in Alabama. Hi, Barry. What's on your mind? Hi. Hi, Dan. I appreciate it. I was gonna. I don't know that I'm too late. We've kind of moved on, but Deacon Jones. I had an opportunity to fly with Deacon a few years back, and he was a big time hero for me. I grew up, you know, as a lineman in football, and he just was larger than life. Was sitting at a little establishment at DFW airport, and Deacon started talking about sacks, and it was amazing to see how bad he was really hurt that nobody recognized that he really was the sack leader of all times. Plus, when you're around him and you see his hand, these huge hands are all gnarly. And he just, like. He had dark eyes, like, black eyes. When he stared at you, it was like, damn, you know, you can't look in the sun. I didn't want to look at his eyes because Deacon would be like. He'd be. He could say the nicest thing, but it was like, damn, he's up, man. You just felt like he was going to give you, like, that head slap that they were able to give offensive linemen. Imagine you have a weapon. You're allowed to hit the offensive lineman up the side of the head, and that's just part of the game. How about we go around the room, what we learn on the program? Todd, did you learn anything today?
Brett Favre
Did actually.
Dan Patrick
They call him Pittsburgh Dave, although he lives in Arkansas now.
Brett Favre
He wanted to make sure you're still.
Dan Patrick
Okay with an NFL sky judge. Yeah. I am Seaton O'Connor. What'd you learn today? Ryan Rosillo's good with everything. Yeah, he is. Yeah. I think a mulligan, you'd probably maybe take a little bit more of a shot, score the touchdown and walk by Meghan Markle and go, how about a drink, Marvin?
Brett Favre
Brett Favre was joking. Mark Gastineau was not.
Dan Patrick
Paul, what did you learn today?
Albert Breer
No Sussex for Ryan. Rossella.
Dan Patrick
Oh, Todd. What did I learn today? Wave goodbye and walk off the field after you win. Don't plant a flag.
Brett Favre
