You are listening to the Dan Patrick show on Fox Sports Radio Final hour on this Tuesday Dan and the danitz Dan Patrick show. $1,193,000 Happy Bobby Bonilla Day. Another paycheck from the New York Mets. The gift that keeps on giving. And each July 1st through 2035 he gets 1,193,000 from the new York Mets. Congratulations Bobby. That's pretty good deal though, by Bobby Bowe. Now I don't know what the deal was Initially, but to get it extended that far out and to get those checks, 1.1 million, almost 1.2 million every year for the next 10 years. Gas polling.
Dan Patrick
It was 1999 and the Mets had to get out of Bobby Bonilla's contract. They owed him just under $6 million. And they had to do it immediately to get it off the books so they could go after, I think Mike Musea, the pitcher, and it precluded them. The agent for Bonia knew that they knew they had to and created a payment plan of about $1.19 million to be deferred until 2035. But payments every year from 2000 to 2035. And it gathers interest so it goes up a little bit each year.
Paul Pabst
So he got $35 million, $40 million based off of $6 million, is that right? They owed him 6 million. They deferred it and they've been paying him. And we'll pay him to 2035.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, it'll be about $32 million with the ups and downs in it.
Paul Pabst
Alrighty, final hour here. We'll talk to Bobby Marks, ESPN Front Office Insider. We'll talk about some of the moves that were made. NBA free agency, no major move, but I think there was a lot of good moves, moves that are really interesting. The Rockets and the Hawks, I think, got better. I like what Denver did. They got rid of Porter and you bring in Cam Johnson, who, yes, is two years older but makes about 17 million less. That means Denver's probably got another move in there. And we keep looking around going, okay, are the Knicks going to get a coach? When do they get a coach? And are the Lakers going to get a big man? That seems to be some unanswered questions. I don't think Giannis is going to be moved. He's probably trying to figure out, okay, what is their grand plan? If you want to keep me, what are you going to do? What can you do? And you don't have Dame Lillard. I just don't know if you have enough. Even though the east is wide open, the LeBron James, whatever rich Paul is agent, the word salad there of let's think about now, not necessarily the future, but he's going to opt back in, but doesn't feel like he's happy. Just see what Bobby Marks is going to. How does he interpret what was said there or not said by LeBron James's camp stat of the Day is always brought to you by Panini America. The official trading cards of the program. We mentioned this yesterday I'll mention it again next Thursday. Celebrity Jeopardy. Celebrity Family Feud. Celebrity Family Feud. Oh, we wouldn't do well in Celebrity Jeopardy. No, we wouldn't do well. Celebrity Family Feud. Though I can't tell you how well or how poorly we did. I will say it's all about content. Yes.
Dan Patrick
Multiple choice. We got a better chance there.
Paul Pabst
Yes, we definitely better chance at multiple choice. Yeah. The whole thing with Jeopardy. And you got to buzz in and it's, it's, you know, timing and, and plus you have to be smart too, you know. Oh, yeah.
Dan Patrick
Quick. God.
Paul Pabst
I mean, Todd is apparently the smartest person in the room. What is paramecium?
Dan Patrick
What are. What is the larval stage?
Paul Pabst
Oh, so sorry.
Dan Patrick
What is covalent bonding? Science for 450.
Paul Pabst
Yeah. You have the highest grade point average here and you graduated second in your career.
Dan Patrick
And once again shows you how street.
Paul Pabst
Smarts versus memorizing things in a book where that gets you. Yes.
Dan Patrick
Paulie, I would love a piece of fellow sports media people in. In Jeopardy. I don't know if I have the celebrity part of it, but I don't know if I can get on because of that reason. But Jeopardy. Is. The timing of it is. Is almost more important than your knowledge. You. You hosted it. You know, it's mo. Mostly timing, mostly timing. I mean, you need the answers as well. But I had read that the. In the original Jeopardy. They want the people to get the answers. They don't want people missing over and over.
Paul Pabst
Sports Jeopardy. Was great, but I probably knew 75, maybe 80% of the clues. There were some people that were really, really sharp, you know, so when you buzz in, you're good to go. Like you got to have that answer and there. It was challenging. It was fun. I really enjoyed that. I love doing that. Alrighty. I didn't know this, but Nico Harrison, the Mabs GM now is letting people know you get to see the vision that he saw with the Dallas Mavericks. So it starts with the question and then here's Nico Harrison, the Mavs general manager. Your relationship with the fans after everything this past season?
Dan Patrick
Yeah, I think so. I think, I think it, I think it will help. Most importantly, I think it just, you know, we're, we're in win now mode and we have a really good team.
Paul Pabst
And Cooper adds to that.
Dan Patrick
So I think the fans finally start to see the vision.
Paul Pabst
Okay. The plan wasn't to win the lottery. If they win a play in game, they're not in the lottery. If I'm Nico Harrison, you can take a Victory lap. But do it in a way that doesn't make it seem like you deserve all the credit because you guys didn't make the playoffs, you had injuries, you traded away Luca and you lucked into Cooper Flag. That's not exactly a vision here because if you win one more game, you're not even in the lottery. What is your vision after that? Can he just say, we've been very fortunate? You know, tough to trade Luca. I like what we got in return. I truly believe in that type of team. Winning championships, playing defense. And we get Cooper Flag. We lucked into that. You know, we're very fortunate. And you know what? We're not going to have Kyrie for the first half of the season, but we get d' Angelo Russell. He'll be, you know, a capable fill in for him. And I think the second half of the season, people then can see the vision of what I think is going to win championships here. Like something like that. Yes. It would be worse though if he was like, who got lucky with that one? I'd rather be lucky than good any day. Right.
Dan Patrick
But.
Paul Pabst
But that's the truth of it. Like, he did luck out. There's no vision to get Cooper flag. 4D chess. He's playing 4D chess. You just can't see it coming the way he can. You're right. I did not see this. I did not get the vision. And my eyesight's a little spotty. Yes, Paulie.
Dan Patrick
So for Nico Harrison, he basically has to hold his breath the next five, six years that the Lakers, led by Luca, don't win a title.
Paul Pabst
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
Until that happens, he still got benefit of doubt on his side a little.
Paul Pabst
Bit, but only if the Lakers win a title.
Dan Patrick
It's over for him if the Lakers win a title.
Paul Pabst
And Lucas, what if Luke is the MVP next season and they don't win anything?
Dan Patrick
Yeah, he's still in the clear because.
Paul Pabst
This was about Luca.
Dan Patrick
Right.
Paul Pabst
But it's a. Luffy's going to prove I'm the best player in the sport. I'm going to win the mvp. That refutes what Nico Harrison thought about him. That he was out of shape and.
Dan Patrick
He comes in jacked.
Paul Pabst
Well, he's just. He's going to lose weight. He's not going to be jacked. He's just going to be in shape, I think. But I. I would think. Now, granted, you win a title, that's one thing, but if you win the mvp. He bet against Luca. Now he's also going to say, well, you know what? We Want somebody who's going to play defense. Okay. There are a lot of great players in the history of the NBA who they play defense by outscoring you on offense. Like, I got my 35 and you got 18. I think I won. Yes. Eden, it is possible that five years.
Dan Patrick
From now, down the line.
Paul Pabst
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
This trade doesn't look bad.
Paul Pabst
How?
Dan Patrick
If Luca doesn't do the things you.
Paul Pabst
Were just talking about. So if he doesn't take care of himself, if Luca remains Luca that we saw the last couple of years in Dallas. Correct. Okay. Because now it's going to be his team. Probably after next season. LeBron gone. It's a big stage to not be the guy. Yes. People are expecting far more members of the media covering everything you do in Los Angeles. Yes. We're in Dallas. Probably a little more user friendly, but Nico should not. I mean, it's embarrassing for him to talk about a vision here. If I took away Cooper Flag and they had the 13th pick in the first round, would he be telling me about a vision? And the answer is no, he would not. The vision, it's essentially a new Trust the process. It's like if the Niners don't get Brock Purdy after, you know, screwing it up with Trey. Lan. Yeah. That's where you can go. Yeah. You see the vision we got here. Trust the process.
Dan Patrick
The new is.
Paul Pabst
See the vision they got. They got bailed out. John lynch got bailed out big time. There, like that guy is our future. We're going all. We're going up to get Trey Lance. But you see the vision we had. We took this guy with the last pick of the draft. I mean, come on. There's no vision there. That's where Nico. Okay, I'm. I'm. I'm glad that he feels safe now that fans aren't maybe as angry as they were because they have Cooper Flag. I understand that, but don't take a victory lap on the vision here. I'm sorry. Yes.
Dan Patrick
It's also hard not to. You're excited that you got bailed out with Cooper Flag, and you don't want to rub it in, but the one thing you can never do, Nico Harrison, is. Is ever admit that he got it wrong. He has to hold with this stance in every interview he does with the trade of Luca.
Paul Pabst
We're also. It's been a busy show. We've been all over the place. You've come to expect that. I brought up the hurry. We were talking about TJ Watt and Trey Hendrickson and Sachs. And I want A guy who's going to lead the league in hurries. Well, there's not really a definition on a hurry, and they don't keep official stats. I had Todd reach out to the NFL. They get back to you on the hurry?
Dan Patrick
Not just.
Paul Pabst
They did not. Okay, keep you posted. All right, so how's this? A hurry is when a defensive player causes the quarterback to pull the ball down, scramble or throw the ball early. Just one sentence there. We don't want to add anything to it, complete the process or any of that stuff. I don't know if that's good enough. I think this is just in the eye of the beholder at each stadium. But I love, you know, guys who create hurries. I'm all in on that. Let me see. So we, we did some digging on hurries here. 2021. Joey Bosa. Let's see. Had 21 hurries. Von Miller, 16 hurries in 2022. Aiden Hutchinson at 29. Micah Parsons with 21. Max Crosby, total hurries since 2021. He has 61. Micah Parsons has 61. So these are legitimate stats because these are really good players. Max Crosby, Micah Parsons, Chris Jones, Aiden Hutchinson, and Trey Hendrickson. How about hits? Quarterback hits? Let's see. 2021. TJ Watt had 39. Following year, Nick Bose had 48, TJ Watt had 36. Zach Allen had 40 in 2024. Total quarterback hit since 2021. Nick Bosa is your big leader then Max Crosby, Miles Garrett, TJ Watt, Michael Parsons and Trey Hendrickson. Yes, Todd.
Dan Patrick
And how do you define a hit? What if you kind of graze the quarterback and he went down and it kind of looks like a hit, but he just kind of revved up against his.
Paul Pabst
No, you're. You're right. You know, with the NFL, they're going to add language here. A couple of phone calls in here, if I may. Joe in Orlando. Hi, Joe. What's on your mind today? Morning, fellas. Dan, just to give you a head, we got a bad connection there. Joe Dylan in Orlando. Hi, Dill. What's on your mind today?
Dan Patrick
Hey, Dan, thank you for taking my call again. I had a stat considering the MLB All Star game coming up, the stat of the day. Let me get the play more quickly. Pink Aaron has the most MLB All Star Game appearances, but which two players are tied for second?
Paul Pabst
All right, which two players are tied for second on the all time All Star game appearance? Willie Mays. That's one of them. What's the other one? Yes, Paul.
Dan Patrick
I was gonna throw out Tony Gwynn No.
Paul Pabst
Al Kaline.
Dan Patrick
Oh, no.
Paul Pabst
Marvin.
Dan Patrick
Stan.
Paul Pabst
Mutual.
Dan Patrick
Well done, guys. Jesus.
Paul Pabst
Bless you.
Dan Patrick
Thank you for taking my call.
Paul Pabst
All right, thank you, Dylan. Matt in California. Hi, Matt. What's on your mind today?
Dan Patrick
Good morning. 611 80. These are the top five suggestions for the sports hemi.
Paul Pabst
Okay. And you could really make my day if you gong at the end of this. But here we go.
Dan Patrick
Number five, use the quality paper to create a beautiful origami crane. Number four, post it as a PDF on LinkedIn. Number three, hang it with a single thumbtack. When the corners start to curl, tape them down with yellow scotch tape. Number two, pay with a check on Friday, stop payment Monday. And number one, you're better than this. Don't get one.
Paul Pabst
Thank you, Matt. Yeah. The sports Emmy people reached out to the losers of the sports Emmys and said if you would like to have a certificate or we like to say the non winners, a certificate of being a non winner of the sports emmys and for $50 unframed you could get a certificate. And I said I would buy any of the danets a certificate of being a sports emmy nominee but not winning. Paulie took me up on it. Nobody else did. I don't want one. But I would like at the end of this, in, you know, two and a half years if all the sports Emmy nominations we had, if they I could get a certificate of that. Of all the years that we were nominated and they did a one certificate, like a one sheet certificate, I would be fine with that. Yes, Todd.
Dan Patrick
Plus shipping and handling void away from batteries not included.
Paul Pabst
All right, Eric in Wisconsin. Hi, Eric. What's on your mind? Hello, Mr. Patrick.
Dan Patrick
Dan.
Paul Pabst
That's love the show. Going back to one of your previous conversations here, how did you quit your fandom for your love of, you know, your local Ohio sports teams, Reds, etc. I just had to turn off a portion of my brain. I just, it, it was, I just didn't care anymore. I had to just say I don't care. And it was really tough because you grow up and you're watching games, you're listening to games, going to games. And I just got to this point where I went, I can't care about Kenny Anderson or Boomer Siason or Chris Collinsworth, Anthony Munoz or Eric Davis or the Red. I just, I couldn't care about it anymore and it was difficult. Even when I go back to Ohio, people say, well, do you have against the Reds now? I go nothing. I'm a national sportscaster. I can't root and I didn't like it when, you know, Chris Burman would root or Stuart Scott would root. Our job was to be neutral. You had to tune in and think, we are being careful with what we're saying and how we're saying it. I never agreed with that. They had their fandom. They wore it on their sleeves. And I, I couldn't do it that way. Difficult. But, you know, that's been, what, 36 years, 37 years that I've kind of been able to. Even when the Bengals were in the super bowl and they're like, aren't you pulling for the Bengals? I said, I'm pulling for the people of Cincinnati. Couldn't care less if they won. Great for the people of Cincinnati. But the Rams were a great story as well. So if that explains it. Let's see. We'll take a break here. Seaton, do we have a poll question for the final hour of the program?
Dan Patrick
We got two of them up there. Worst day yesterday.
Paul Pabst
Okay, Lakers, Giannis or the Nets? Okay, Lakers have 61% of that vote. And then we also have the best day yesterday.
Dan Patrick
The Rockets win in that one, followed.
Paul Pabst
By the Steelers, the hawks, only about 20%. Okay. 877-3-DP show email address dpdanpatrick.com Twitter handle the TP show the free agent center Miles Turner is on the move. He's joining The Milwaukee Bucks. Four years, $107 million. He was with the Pacers. Is there more to that, Paul?
Dan Patrick
Yeah, this just in a minute ago from Shams Charani of espn. The Milwaukee Bucks are waving Damian Lillard and stretching the remaining 113 of his contract in order to acquire Miles Turner.

You ever had to shoot your gun?
Dan Patrick
Sometimes the answer is yes. But there's a company dedicated to a future where the answer will always be no. Across the country, cops called this Taser the Revolution. But not everyone was convinced it was that simple. Cops believed everything that Taser told them from Lava for good. Dan Patrick
Everybody else want to get pissed off cause the white said it was okay. Problem. My oldest daughter, her first day in ninth grade and I called to ask how I was doing. She was like, oh, dad, all they were doing was talking about your thing in class. I ruined my baby's first day of high school. And Slumflower, what times me on is when a man sends me money. His story is wild and it's currently the subject of a juicy new HBO documentary. We dive into how culture connects us. When you go to France or you go to England or you go to Hong Kong, those kids are wearing Jordans, they're wearing Kobe's shirt. If you're just joining us, the breaking news. Miles Turner leaving the Pacers. He signed a four year, $107 million deal with the Milwaukee Bucks according to ESPN. And the Milwaukee Bucks are going to waive Dame Lillard. Is that the official wording on that, Marvin? That they're going to waive Dame Lillard?
Dan Patrick
Correct.
Paul Pabst
Okay. Bobby Marks, ESPN NBA front office insider, regular contributor to NBA Today. NBA free agency tipped off last night on the Mothership. This evening, a three hour NBA Today free agency special that'll start at 7 Eastern. All right, Bobby, let me start with that. Surprised that Miles Turner is going to the Bucks and then what they did with Dame Lillard.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, I was surprised. I thought, listen, Indiana gets to an NBA Finals and certainly Turner is a priority. I think things change a little bit with the Halberton injury. As far as where Indiana is going next year with their roster, I think the interesting thing, Dan, they haven't paid the luxury tax in 20 years. They had signed Turner. This would have put them in attacks for the first time and they basically let him walk to a division rival that's trying to keep their franchise level player on their roster. So yeah, it is, it is surprising the Lillard one. I think the Lillard one is probably more surprising for me. I know he's out with that injury and he's owed $113 million and they stretched that money over five years. It's the biggest stretch ever, 22.9 million that he's going to be owed. And I think when Damian does get returned from that injury, he'll have a high demand whenever that is. You know, it might be a year from now here, but it will be interesting how this Bucks roster with they lo Brook Lopez but they get Miles Turner to, to join Giannis.
Paul Pabst
More likely or less likely that Giannis will be on the move anytime soon?
Dan Patrick
I thought it was, I think it's less likely that he'll be on a move and I said that this morning when we were doing TV just based on some of the moves they had made with Bobby Portis. And they bring back Gary Trent Jr. And Kevin Porter. Some of their Role players, they still got to go get a point guard, though. I mean, I think that's going to be the most important thing. I think, I think, I think the one name to keep an eye on is Chris Paul. I would keep an eye on Chris Paul. I don't know if it fits what Chris is trying to do at this tale of his career. Certainly being in Milwaukee, not close to home. I know that is a priority for him, but he's the best available free agent point guard in the market. Played 82 games last year and he's still got a lot left. So I would think that would, if I'm Milwaukee, that's the priority for me as far as going out and trying to get a player like that.
Paul Pabst
But what about the Pacers? In lieu of Tyrese Halliburton, what do you do? We saw what Dallas did with Kyrie out and you get d' Angelo Russell. What's, what's Indiana's mindset here?
Dan Patrick
Well, the market of free agent centers and this is kind of the timing of it is not good for Indiana because we had a rash of centers come off the board yesterday. You had Brook Lopez, you had, you had Clint Capella. There was a number of players here. Really. They have this, we call it the non tax $14 million to go out and spend. Deandre Ayton is the best available out there. I would think the, the market for deandre Ayton gets a little bit better. It had cooled off a little bit. We thought maybe the Lakers were linked to him and we'll see if that plays out. But I think if Ayton wants to go to Indiana, that would probably be the better fit for him. But it is a tough blow for, for Indiana because now you lose two out of your five starters for next year.
Paul Pabst
But are you bringing in somebody as a temporary replacement for Halliburton?
Dan Patrick
Well, they've got T.J. mcConnell and they have Andrew Nemhard and they drafted, they went through the draft and picked up, picked up a guard there. So I, you know, I think the interesting thing, Dan, is the move they made before the draft when Halbert and right in the NBA Finals when they were able to get their first round pick back. They traded their, their own pick this year to New Orleans and got their pick back in 2026. So now that gives them the flexibility. Like they're almost kind of where, like Boston is where you're almost, I don't want to say gap year, but you're, you know, you're kind of, you can kind of Pull back a little bit here and reset that roster and still get a pretty good draft pick.
Paul Pabst
Would you move Jalen Brown if you're the Celtics?
Dan Patrick
I wouldn't because I keep on coming back to this notion that eventually Jason Tatum's coming back. I mean, like, and you're going to have. If the goal is to try to win, you need Jaylen Brown and Derek White around him. And it's so hard getting a player like Brown who's a top 20 player and you know, White is it, you know, do everything type guy to add to your roster in trades and free agency. I wouldn't. Unless it's, you know, the mothership of packages and everything like that. I wouldn't move off Jaylen Brown.
Paul Pabst
Bobby Marks, ESPN NBA Front Office Insider and NBA Today Free agency special. It's three hours starting at 7 Eastern tonight. Can you help me understand or translate what Rich Paul was saying to us and I guess the Lakers about LeBron almost begrudgingly opting in. But hey, remember, it's about winning now, not the future.
Dan Patrick
Well, when I saw that Dan, I had to send it to my wife. I'd say, can you interpret this for me? Because I don't understand anything on here. It's interesting. It's like, well, we're going to opt into $53 million, but we want the roster to be better and I want to win. It has to be a championship roster. Well, if you wanted to do that, why don't you just decline your option? You had your pick of teams. I mean, that would have been essentially the easiest thing to do here. Now he's opted in there. Listen, there, there's an incomplete for the Lakers as far as their off season so far. I mean, they went out and got Jake Laravia, but they've got. We've been talking since February about getting a center. I mean, they need to get a center and there's no market for them outside of Eaton right now. And it's going to be interesting. The collateral damage or the impact if they don't make significant improvements here because you've got Luca on one end. Who's your future? And then you have LeBron here on the last year of a contract here. You're basically kind of working on two different timelines.
Paul Pabst
Yeah, I'm trying to understand. And they lose Dorian Finney Smith to the Rockets. And I start to wonder, okay, they're going to bring back Austin Reeves. You think he turned down that extension, but they're going to bring him back? I'm guessing. But I just Wonder what exactly is LeBron saying? And I agree with you, I said the same thing. If you don't like what, what it looks like in la, then go to Cleveland and, and win another title there. If, if that, if you're not happy with this, you're not part of the future, then you can win a championship in Cleveland with the east wide open.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, I mean, I think it would have worked maybe five years ago. I mean, but now, as I said, like where the Lakers are when you went out and get you acquired, Luka, like he's the face of the franchise. Like he's the face of the franchise. They're not going to go out and make a short term move to satisfy LeBron, like, they're not going out and giving up all their draft equity for a short, short term move for a player that likely won't be on their roster.
Paul Pabst
But aren't the Lakers trying to win now, Bobby?
Dan Patrick
Well, that's what they're trying to kind of thread the needle. Like you're trying to thread the needle of winning now, saving your flexibility for next year. That is, it's hard to do in the Western Conference. Trying to do that. The Western Conference. We went, we went through yesterday. Dallas got better because they got d' Angelo Russell as a temporary replacement for Kyrie. Of course, Cooper Flag, you go through the list. Denver, Cam Johnson, Houston, of course. As far as where they are, OKC brings back everything. Like if you told me right now, is the Lakers a top five or six team in the, in the West, I don't think they are. And we had this debate this morning, I would say the Dallas Matt and Nico Harrison got criticized. He got crucified. Right, like, and, and that's rightfully so based on the trade and what happened. But you could make the argument that Dallas is in a better position right now than the Los Angeles Lakers as far as where they are. And I know they got lucky with Cooper Flag, but with Cooper Flag, and if they get Kyrie back and the depth they have with that roster, if they, of course, if they stay healthy, that they're in a, they're in a better position.
Paul Pabst
I don't want to hear Nico Harrison tell me about the vision that he had. Because the vision was, hey, I traded away Luca. People hated me. We had injuries. If we win one more game, we're not even in the lottery. There's no vision here. He lucked into Cooper Flag. That's all he needed to say. Hey, I still believe in defense. When we're healthy, we're Going to be very competitive. We lucked into the lottery and I got Cooper Flag. That's it. But don't tell me, hey, you see the vision that I had? What exactly is that vision?
Dan Patrick
You know, it would have been refreshing if he just went up there and goes, man, we got lucky. Humanizing, like, humanize it, right? We would all been like, yeah, you know what? You did get lucky.
Paul Pabst
What do you expect out of Cooper Flag first year?
Dan Patrick
Oh, man, I tell you, I've probably told this story too many times, but, I mean, I live down in southwest Florida, and I saw Cooper play when he was at Mount Verde at the City of Palms Classic in Fort Myers. This is when Cooper was 16. This was his senior year in high school. And this is with Derek Queen and Lee McNeely and Asa Newell, that team. And I, I was sitting with a scout and I said to the scout, I go, I'm not, I'm not making this up. I go, he could play in the NBA right now. 16. The beauty of Cooper Flag is not him scoring 22, 23 points a game. The beauty of Cooper Flag is defense. I mean, his defense, as far as his length, his iq, that's what's going to keep him in these games down the stretch here. And I think he's, he's all business. I had an opportunity to sit down with them a high level. But I love, I love the fact that he can come in right now and make an impact defensively.
Paul Pabst
But I also wonder, how do you ease him in to a lineup that's. Do you start him?
Dan Patrick
You start them. Then you have PJ Washington come off. That's, that's the, the thing with Dallas. They got so much depth. They have, you know, whether it be PJ Washington or Najee Marshall or Caleb Martin, I mean, you go, Kyrie, Clay Cooper, AD Derek Lively, Daniel Gafford. I mean, that's kind of what you're. You're looking at here. But I do think you. I do think. I mean, Jason's talking, My kid is talking about playing my point a little bit here, too, which is going to be interesting here. But I do think you kind of, you know, it's like baptism by fire.
Paul Pabst
Yeah, I don't know. Maybe I'd have him come in off the bench. He's playing against their second unit. But then you do kind of want him surrounded a little bit there. I mean, he's, he's really got the luxury of he can defer, and nobody's going to complain if he defers, whether. If he went to the Wizards or went to Brooklyn. I mean, all eyes would be on him. Like, all right, let me see what you can do with Dallas. He can attempt to blend in a little bit there.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, it's almost like a quarterback getting drafted with the first pick and like, basically throwing them into, like on an expansion team. Like, we saw that. I think Derek Carr, right. With the Texans and you know where Cooper, he's not going to Utah or Washington or Brooklyn. One of these teams that's rebuilding. You basically have all these veterans around them that you can't ease in more into the situation.
Paul Pabst
Any big moves you're expecting?
Dan Patrick
You know, we have all these restricted free agents out there. Jonathan Kaminga, Josh Giddey, there's a group of them. The problem is there's no money out there in free agency for a team to come in and give an offer sheet here. You know, we'll see what happens on the trade front. Free agency, we had a lot come off the board on Monday here. We might be done by the end of the week, free agency wise. It's the downside of the ability to negotiate with your own players at once the finals ends.
Paul Pabst
If you were going to, let's say one of your children, you're going to show and tell, bringing in my dad, he's going to explain the NBA aprons. So it's career day, but you were going to explain it to, let's say, fifth graders.
Dan Patrick
Yeah.
Paul Pabst
Treat me like a fifth grader and my audience and explain the famous NBA aprons. That second apron here.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, I know. I wish we would come up with a different name. Right. It's a. It's a punitive restriction that once you exceed it. Okay. Once you exceed this level, you're. All right, let's, let's. All right, I'm going to talk like, like a fifth grader. You have a. You have a toy box of toys. Okay. You have 20, 20 of your best toys. Okay. Once you exceed this restriction, this level, I'm going to go in the toy box, Dan, and I'm going to take 15 of those toys away, but I'm still going to give you five of your best toys. Okay? But I'm taking those other 15 away here. Now you have less toys to play with, but they're still pretty good. But you won't be able to add any more toys to that here. And that's what the league is saying. We're going to allow you to keep your best, but we're not going to allow you to go to Golden State or the Clippers and grab their best player. And what it does is it makes you draft well. It makes you prioritize keeping your own players. If you don't like Phoenix, who's been a second apron team and had three high level players and they don't have, they have three shiny toys but not really anything else good to that roster, it really hurts you like Oklahoma City is going to be. If they're a team that can defeat the second apron as we call it, they're the ones that can do it because of Shea, Chet, Jalen, Williams, four first round picks next year, all these young players when play, when Lou Dort gets expensive, Case and Wallace will probably replace and when Isaiah Hartenstein replaces him, Thomas Sorber, who they drafted, replaces him. So you can keep on turning the wheel there.
Paul Pabst
No, thank you. Thank you for treating us as.
Dan Patrick
I've never used that, I've never used that analogy. I just made that one up.
Paul Pabst
Maybe you could do it with to Greeny, you know, because I, Greeny doesn't understand the second apron. So maybe you just treat him like a fifth grader. Have fun tonight. Bobby, thank you for joining us.
Dan Patrick
Thanks Dan. Appreciate it.
Paul Pabst
Bobby Marks, ESPN NBA Front Office Insider. You know, sometimes you have to say, you know, just don't give me the legalese. You know, whenever we have a lawyer on like dumb it down a little bit for me here. Front Office Insider and second, they deal with this all the time, common language. And then we go, yeah, okay. Yeah. They say you could be talking about, you know, the first spatula and the second apron and you know, a griddle and I'd be like, yeah, okay. All right. Spatula, yeah. Last call for phone calls. What we learn what's in store tomorrow. If I'm a Pacer fan, I'm proud that we went to the NBA Finals. We took the champions to seven games, but we lost Tyrese Halberton. If you win the title and you lose Tyrese Halberton and now you lose Miles Turner, you go, okay, at least we won a title. Boy, this is tough. No Halberton for most of the season and now you lose Miles Turner to a rival in the Milwaukee Bucks. That's a bad off season. It's a bad off season. We just started July. I like what Milwaukee did. They upgraded. Brook Lopez goes to the Clippers. You get Miles Turner, four year deal, you're going to waive Dame Lillard, you might have the tallest point guard in the history of the NBA. Giannis, he might play point. I don't know who else you got, who's going to start as your point guard there. But it, it might be Giannis. But if you had won the title, then at least you go, okay, we'll accept that. We got our title. But now you lose Halliburton and now you lose Miles Turner. Chris in la. Hi, Chris. What's on your mind today? How you doing, Dan? Good, sir.
Dan Patrick
I've had the pleasure the last two summers or springs of working with Cooper Flag out here in Los Angeles.
Paul Pabst
I do NBA pre draft out here.
Dan Patrick
And by far, and I've been doing it for 10 years, by far the hardest working kid player, whatever you want to call him I've ever seen. His work ethic is off the charts.
Paul Pabst
And I mean we had guys that were fighting to get into the first.
Dan Patrick
Round, second rounders and he was working harder than all of them. His work ethic is off the charts and I think, I think he's going to be a fantastic pro.
Paul Pabst
What was it that stood out that he needs to work on?
Dan Patrick
Really not much. Probably three point shooting maybe at the least.
Paul Pabst
His basketball IQ is through the roof.
Dan Patrick
And what people don't realize, he is a fantastic passer. So when Jason Kidd said he could play point, he absolutely could play point. He sees, he sees things before they even develop. It's just a weird sense that he has on the court of a player that I've never seen anything like it before. I think the only player that I.
Paul Pabst
Ever saw like that with Steve Nash.
Dan Patrick
But Cooper Flag is his court vision.
Paul Pabst
And his IQ is, is really off the charts. Thank you, Chris. Yeah, by all accounts he's ready to go. And here's Bobby Mark saying, I saw him at 16 and thought he could play in the NBA. Size wise, he's, he's going to fill out. I like the fact that he, it's not that he will play defense, he likes playing defense and I think he's a very underrated passer. I think the shot could be wilt. Well, I mean, once again, he's 18. Things will get better. I just hope that he keeps adding to his repertoire. The great ones keep adding because as the league adjusts to you, then you have to adjust and do something different. Very, very few guys can go, I'm going to go there and you can't stop me. I'm going to make that move and you can't stop me. That's not Cooper flag, but that, you know, when somebody says, oh, he doesn't have the bag, he does. He's got everything in it. It's not one thing. I don't want a player who has one thing. I, you know, forget who it was. Carmelo said he doesn't do one thing. Great. Look at all the things he does really well. That's the player I want. That's what I want. Kellen in Kansas City. Hi, Kellen. What's on your mind? 6 1, 2, 40 with you spoke earlier about being on like Sports Jeopardy. Besides the show and besides SportsCenter, what has been the best side gig that you've had? I would say with NBC, Football Night in America and doing the Olympics. Those were, if you want to call them, a side gig. I mean, they. Football night in America was a full time job. It was during the football season, obviously, but I really enjoyed that. It was a high end product, work with great people. The Olympics once again, high end product, big exposure, new challenge for me. But Sports Jeopardy. If I could do that, do that on a consistent basis, that would be a great retirement plan because I could do that and have a lot of fun, be satisfied with that. No, there's no breaking news. No, there's. No. I'm not. Oh, new. No, no, no. Oh, I, I keep trying to have them bring back Sports Jeopardy. It just makes all the sense in the world. How about mothership? You know, at five o' clock every day since you kicked around the horn to the curb. I'll do Sports Jeopardy. Leading into Mike and Tony. I'll do that for you. That's breaking. Yes. Marvin, Dan Patrick, going back to the mothership. Yes.
Dan Patrick
All right.
Paul Pabst
Well, It'd be like McAfee where they take your show and then they put it at the mothership and then they.
Dan Patrick
Can name a building after you. Yes.
Paul Pabst
No, then I get a statue.
Dan Patrick
Then you get a statue on top of the building.
Paul Pabst
That's what I want, a big statue on top of the building. Todd, what'd you Learn today Odds to win the NBA title next season.
Dan Patrick
Thunder plus 225 way ahead of the next team.
Paul Pabst
Rockets at 1750 SE what you learned today? You're not a big statue guy? No, not really. I've posed a lot before. Marvin. Bobby Marks treated us like fifth graders. Yeah. I mean, it is Rodan. That's the famous statue. Yes. Paulie. What'd you learn?
Dan Patrick
SGA 70 million plus.
Paul Pabst
Yeah. Have a great day, everybody. We look forward to chatting with you tomorrow.

Summary of The Dan Patrick Show – Hour 3: Nicco Harrison’s Legacy Still Tied to the Lakers, Bob Marks
Introduction
In the third hour of The Dan Patrick Show, hosted by Dan Patrick alongside co-host Paul Pabst, the discussion delves deep into the intricacies of NBA free agency, focusing primarily on Nicco Harrison’s enduring legacy with the Los Angeles Lakers and the latest moves in the league, including Miles Turner’s significant shift from the Indiana Pacers to the Milwaukee Bucks. Joined by Bobby Marks, ESPN’s NBA Front Office Insider, the episode provides listeners with insider perspectives on team strategies, player movements, and the broader implications for the NBA landscape.
Main Discussions
1. Bobby Bonilla’s Deferred Contract [02:15 – 04:03]
The show kicks off with a brief overview of Bobby Bonilla’s infamous deferred contract with the New York Mets. Dan Patrick explains how Bonilla continues to receive annual payments of approximately $1.19 million from the Mets, a deal initially struck in 1999 to help the team manage its finances. This arrangement extends Bonilla’s payments through 2035, totaling around $32 million when accounting for interest.
Notable Quote:
Dan Patrick [03:04]: "It was 1999 and the Mets had to get out of Bobby Bonilla's contract. They owed him just under $6 million and created a payment plan of about $1.19 million to be deferred until 2035."
2. NBA Free Agency and Trades [04:03 – 37:44]
The core of the episode centers on the ongoing NBA free agency period. Bobby Marks provides expert analysis on several high-profile moves:
Miles Turner to the Milwaukee Bucks: Turner’s move is highlighted as a strategic acquisition for the Bucks, aimed at bolstering their roster alongside Giannis Antetokounmpo. Dan expresses surprise over the Pacers’ decision to let Turner go, considering his pivotal role.
Notable Quote:
Bobby Marks [21:07]: "The Milwaukee Bucks are waving Damian Lillard and stretching the remaining $113 million of his contract in order to acquire Miles Turner."
Damian Lillard's Situation: The Bucks’ decision to waive Damian Lillard is examined, raising questions about the team’s long-term strategy and Giannis’s future with the franchise.
Notable Quote:
Bobby Marks [28:09]: "They have off-season moves that show the Lakers are in a better position than the Bucks, but with Luka on one end, they’re not making short-term moves to satisfy LeBron."
Nicco Harrison’s Vision with the Lakers: The discussion shifts to Nicco Harrison, the Lakers’ General Manager, exploring his legacy and the challenges he faces in shaping the team’s future. The debate revolves around whether Harrison’s decisions, such as trading Luka and acquiring Cooper Flag, indicate a clear vision or are merely opportunistic moves.
Notable Quote:
Dan Patrick [36:29]: "It would have been refreshing if he just went up there and said, 'We got lucky.' Humanizing it would have helped fans understand the situation better."
Team Strategies and Future Prospects: The conversation touches on various teams’ strategies, including the Denver Nuggets’ acquisition of Cam Johnson and the Indiana Pacers’ challenges following Tyrese Haliburton’s absence. The impact of these moves on the competitive balance of the NBA is analyzed.
Notable Quote:
Paul Pabst [12:22]: "See the vision they got. They got bailed out. They’re focusing on building a championship roster while maintaining flexibility for future seasons."
3. NFL Hurries Stat Discussion [12:00 – 17:00]
Shifting gears, the hosts briefly touch upon NFL statistics, specifically focusing on the concept of "hurries" and quarterback hits. While not the main focus, this segment provides a nuanced look at defensive metrics in football.
Notable Quote:
Paul Pabst [13:56]: "A hurry is when a defensive player causes the quarterback to pull the ball down, scramble, or throw the ball early. It’s a subjective stat but crucial for evaluating defensive performance."
4. Listener Interaction and Polls [15:53 – 22:10]
Throughout the episode, Dan Patrick and Paul Pabst engage with listeners through live calls and poll questions. Topics range from MLB All-Star Game appearances to creative side gigs related to sports trivia shows like Sports Jeopardy.
Notable Quote:
Dan Patrick [16:09]: "Which two players are tied for second in all-time MLB All-Star game appearances? Willie Mays and Al Kaline."
5. Future Projections and Team Dynamics [27:44 – 38:44]
In the later segments, the discussion delves into future projections for key players and teams:
Giannis Antetokounmpo's Future: The likelihood of Giannis staying with the Bucks or exploring other opportunities is debated, considering his pivotal role in the team’s success.
Notable Quote:
Bobby Marks [29:16]: "More likely that Giannis will stay with the Bucks, especially after their recent roster enhancements."
Indiana Pacers’ Strategy Post-Haliburton: With Tyrese Haliburton’s injury and Miles Turner’s departure, the Pacers’ approach to rebuilding and acquiring new talent is scrutinized.
Notable Quote:
Bobby Marks [31:05]: "The Pacers are dealing with the market of free-agent centers and have limited options, making their next moves critical for the upcoming season."
Cooper Flag’s Integration into the Mavericks: The potential impact of young talent Cooper Flag on the Mavericks’ defensive strategies is highlighted, showcasing his exceptional work ethic and basketball IQ.
Notable Quote:
Dan Patrick [36:40]: "The beauty of Cooper Flag is his defense. His length and IQ are going to keep him in these games down the stretch."
Notable Quotes with Timestamps
Dan Patrick [03:04]: "It was 1999 and the Mets had to get out of Bobby Bonilla's contract. They owed him just under $6 million and created a payment plan of about $1.19 million to be deferred until 2035."
