You are listening to the Dan Patrick show on Fox Sports Radio. Final hour in this Tuesday Dan and the Danette Stan Patrick Show. Christopher Mad Dog Russo from Sirius XM and First Take will stop by more of your phone calls as well. 877.3dpshow email address dpdanpatrick.com Twitter handle @dpshow the US Open live on NBC and Peacock the world's best golfers taking on one of the top toughest golf courses I've ever played, Oakmont country Club, the U.S. open. It'll start coming up this Thursday. USA Network, NBC and Peacock. And this is a golf course that they don't apologize for being difficult. It'll probably and if you're familiar with a stint meter how fast the greens are, they'll probably run at 13 or 14 and lightning quick. There's going to be places where you can not put the ball. If you do, you're just asking for a double bogey. But the rough is going to be really thick. It's a challenge. It'll be over par will be the winning score here. Scotty Scheffler is still in know it's can you hit the ball straight? It's not can you bomb it? Can you hit it straight? Keep it out of the rough? Because if you put it in the rough then you have to hack it out. You can't go for the green and then you just try to avoid. You know, your winning score is probably going to come from somebody who didn't have a double bogey. But if you have those now, everybody else is probably going to have those. But trying to avoid double bogey. But it's a spectacular golf course and I had just gotten there, I think, when they were clearing out trees because if you see it, there's pretty much no trees on most of the holes. But it'll be a great challenge. It's beautiful. A lot of fun. A lot of fun to watch. It wasn't fun to play. Yeah.
Tom Brokaw
Paul, I found a couple different articles, Golf Channel and other, saying it might be the toughest course in America and definitely the toughest for PGA players. We seem to have this every few years, though. We tune into the US Open and when everyone's over par and we have the discussion is this good tv? Is this good for the golf fans?
Lester Holt
Yeah.
Tom Brokaw
And we always we usually say no, we don't we I think I'm saying it for the crowd. We don't like to see people Struggle to that level. Minus two is fine, minus four is four under is fine. But plus three to win it.
Lester Holt
Yeah, but this is the US Open. They want a challenge. They want it to be different. Most of your courses are set up for birdies because we like to see that. Augusta a couple years ago, there weren't birdies on the back nine and people complained. You want to hear the roars. I get all of that. But there are times when that's why we love the British Open. It's different. There's nothing else like it. You get to see those courses. They don't play those kind of courses, you know, on a semi regular basis. And that's why we're fascinated with the way it looks and it's, you know, it's not dressed up, Americanized. It's. That's pretty much the way they've been playing it for centuries there. But yeah, with the US Open, whether they want it or not, they're not getting it. It's going to be the ultimate challenge and that's what we want, apparently, with our U.S. open. Yeah, see, yeah, I don't, I tend to agree with Paul's statement there that I don't really like watching golf and the guys on TV look like me. A weekend, you're like hitting it from the, the trees, over the, into the trees again, then back into the trees, then over the green, then you got to come back up here and like, whatever. I like to see them look really good. I, I would say I understand that, but we get to see them look really good just about every other week. Yeah, it's awesome. This is where it's like, I'll be damned because you can drop the ball in that rough and you could walk away and go get your club and you could come back and go, where's my ball? It'll be that thick. It's going to be that challenging. But one or two events a year, I'm okay with it. Panthers are up two games to one and they take game three six to one. I had just been talking about, I love the playoffs because there's no fighting and then there's fighting last night and there were 21 Edmonton penalties and the Panthers took advantage of that. No basketball tonight, It'll be tomorrow. With the Pacers in a must ish win situation, we'll have the commissioner of the NBA, Adam Silver, on the program tomorrow. Yes, Todd.
Tom Brokaw
So losers are cool when fighting breaks out, when a team is losing by several goals and they know it's out of reach and now they're just looking to start fights and beat up on people.
Lester Holt
What do you think? I think it's more so a loser. Okay.
Tom Brokaw
But I can see the entertainment value because a lot of people miss all the fights that they used to be in hockey. Hockey's fights are way down.
Lester Holt
All right.
Tom Brokaw
Islanders used to do that in the 80s. Oh, we're about to lose.
Lester Holt
Of course. Of course it was the Islanders in the 80s. Yes.
Tom Brokaw
Paul, when you watch back to that fight last night, if it looks like violent ballroom dancing, everyone's circling around, they're kind of hitting each other. But some people aren't. They're just kind of spinning around with each other. Some guys aren't fighting. Some guys are really wailing on each other. And I love the etiquette of the refs. Like, if they're not on the ice, we're not going in.
Lester Holt
Yeah. If they're not, you know, down on the ice, prone on the ice, we're not doing anything. You guys dance, you guys. You guys circle each other. And then all of a sudden, once you go down, then you just kind of. The referees jump on top of them. But, you know, they have. It's a sport that polices itself. And whatever happened last night, I'm sure that Florida will police their end of this and Edmonton as well. With the next game coming up, poll question for the final hour of the program is going to be what seat? No, Connor. Well, let me update you here. I've been kicking around another poll question based off of Ray Allen. Ray was with us at the end of last hour talking about the NBA playoffs. Okay, athlete you would least want to fight. There's the poll question up there right now. Hockey player or football player? Hockey's got 85% of that vote. That's recency bias. Or is that the real thing? I think that's part of the culture of growing up and playing hockey, whereas it's not with football. Football is a violent sport, but in the context of playing football, hockey, it's. It's violent. A lot of collisions, and then occasionally you drop the gloves now. So I would say that hockey players sort of raised on this, have to be ready for this. Whereas if a fight breaks out with a football player, nobody's getting hurt there. But in, in, in the course of a hockey game, you know that there could be a fight. What else do you have seen? You know, I think part of it, too, is that, you know, the Internet is loaded with videos of gigantic dudes, and then they get knocked out with one punch by a Guy much smaller than him, and then it turns out, like the smaller guy. Oh, he is an MMA guy or something. Yeah. But it's just a gigantic looking dude, which for some reason, those videos are tremendously entertaining. What was your Ray Allen poll question? If you needed to hit one shot. My life's on the line. I don't know if it has to be that extreme, but. No, I want my life. If you want your life to be on the line. Yeah, right, of course. Naturally, I'm going big shot Bob, because he's the greatest shooter of all time. Okay. No one has averaged seven points in their career and gotten more love. I think it's the greatest seven point average of a career of all time. Robert Ori. Yeah. Yeah. Well, you know, on the big stage, he hits the big shot. Heck yeah. Hence the name big shot. Okay, wide open three. Nobody's on you. Your life's on the line. Catch and shoot. That's it. Yeah. You're going Ray Allen. Clay. Another great catch and shoot guy. Reggie Miller. Reginald Aloysius. Steph Curry. Yeah. Ray Allen. Larry Bird.
Tom Brokaw
She's too many.
Lester Holt
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yes. Marvin. Oh, Steph. Yeah. Yeah. Paul.
Tom Brokaw
I'm gonna go Bird. No doubt. But you know, before he shoots it, Bird is going to talk smack. You know, if I miss this, you're gone. You're dead.
Lester Holt
Yeah, yeah. I don't know if I want him talking trash to me because the last thing you hear, like, there's a guillotine above my head and I'm going, larry, make sure you make it. Oh, that's right, because you're dying. Yes, I'm good. You're either living or dying. Yes. Right. Yes. It's like squid games with basketball. Yeah. Okay, let's pitch that to Netflix.
Tom Brokaw
Yes.
Lester Holt
Basketball. Squid game.
Tom Brokaw
Yes, Larry.
Lester Holt
Birds explode and like, whatever. Right, okay. All right, so we do a guillotine scene with Larry Bird. Okay, we got to come up with some other ones. Maybe it's like Larry Bird. And they're like, wow, I wonder what, like, the thing is that's going to kill us here. It's just a beautiful day and then, like, the birds start coming and everyone gets pecked by all these birds. Like, you could really make it into a horror thing. Maybe you take a charge from Shaq. Yeah. Yes, Todd.
Tom Brokaw
Someone comes behind you and suffocates you with a net to keep a basketball theme going. What?
Lester Holt
A basketball. Wait, a basketball net? How do you get suffocated by basketball? It's got holes in it. You mean strangled?
Tom Brokaw
Yeah, strangled.
Lester Holt
Suffocating, I guess. You can't be suffocated.
Tom Brokaw
You can be strangled, though. Yeah, you could save me there. So strangled by a net.
Lester Holt
You get beaten to death by a bunch of feathers or something because it's birds. I don't know. Spitballing. I don't know. I'm just spitballing here. Yeah, I think it could be fun. Brendan in Los Angeles. Hi, Brendan. What's on your mind today? Hey, Dan. So today is the Last day of 31 years serving the East Los Angeles community of Boyle Heights as a public school educator. A community of hard working, first and second generation immigrant families. Don't believe all the hype you hear, but I wanted to thank you. I think one reason your show works.
Tom Brokaw
For all of us is because it's like a classroom.
Lester Holt
You're our patient teacher who's not afraid to roast us. Every classroom I've taught has Todd. And some days he's on and some days it's like, really?
Tom Brokaw
And then you've got Paulie who's like.
Lester Holt
Pardon me, sir, that was not the homework you assigned. And there's the cool kid like Marvin. And you're like, thank you, Marvin. And there's sort of the nerd like Seton, who's got some obscure information he has to share no matter what.
Tom Brokaw
And you're.
Lester Holt
Yeah, but you've been, you know, getting work every day. You've made it a joy and you're always there. You're never afraid to roast us when we need it. One quick early gift for college football season.
Tom Brokaw
I know you talked about the Heisman Trophy and the month.
Lester Holt
I would please, please use the term Heismember moving forward. Heismember. Okay, we'll work on that. How about a round of applause for Brendan, who spent 31 years doing this.
Tom Brokaw
Thank you service.
Lester Holt
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Bob in Kansas. Hi, Bob. What's on your mind today?
Tom Brokaw
Hey, Daniel.
Lester Holt
Yes, Bob.
Tom Brokaw
6 foot 175.
Lester Holt
A sleek 175. Actually, Dan, I wasn't calling to be on the show. I was calling, waiting to get some information on. I figured you guys had an attorney.
Tom Brokaw
Or something on retainer. I'm. I'm in Kansas.
Lester Holt
Beautiful morning. I got my windows down, I'm driving.
Tom Brokaw
Checking on the livestock, and all of a sudden this God forsaken racket comes on and the cows are out.
Lester Holt
Now the barbed wire fence is down for about a quarter of a mile.
Tom Brokaw
I got donkeys loose and I didn't know. Somebody's got to be responsible, surely, for all that. I just didn't know who to get a hold of this is going to be.
Lester Holt
And then there's also the duress and the trauma from. I'll never be able to listen to Steve Perry again. I mean, it's just. Fritzi, would you like to apologize to Bob?
Tom Brokaw
I sincerely apologize, Bob, if I ruined Steve Perry or that song or anything related to Journey. If I messed that up for you because of that rendition, I do apologize.
Lester Holt
All right. That's Bob in Kansas. Fritz. He gave us a Terry Bradshaw tribute song. It was set to the tune of Steve Perry from Journey, 1984. And it was oh, Sherry. Oh, Terry. Yeah.
Tom Brokaw
Song was oh, Terry for oh, Sherry.
Lester Holt
You know, we'll post it. Maybe we'll put it in the newsletter, but we'll plut. You know, remember when rap CDs came out, they would have the language there, and they. Parental advisory. Parental. Parental guidance advisory there. Yeah.
Tom Brokaw
People start unsubscribing to the newsletter, you're going to come after me about that.
Lester Holt
Alex in Utah. Hi, Alex. What's on your mind today?
Tom Brokaw
Good morning, gentlemen. Fritzi, don't let them get you down.
Lester Holt
I keep singing, man.
Tom Brokaw
Thanks, but you got it. You got. You got a song in your heart, and we all need to hear it. If you stop thinking, we wouldn't get things like Quizzical.
Lester Holt
I mean, that's good tv. Anyway. Hey, guys.
Tom Brokaw
Just calling to kind of weigh in on the Michael and LeBron debate. This is. I. This is why you guys are the best, in my opinion. It's not hot takes. It's measured. It's measured responses, and you guys are fair to both sides of the argument.
Lester Holt
I, like.
Tom Brokaw
I'm so sick and tired of, like, the.
Lester Holt
The. You know, there's.
Tom Brokaw
I won't say names, but, you know, there's guys out there that are very heated about the debate, and I just think it's ridiculous. I mean, let's just celebrate.
Lester Holt
Both players.
Tom Brokaw
Both players have done incredible things, and, like, let's just. Let's just celebrate the game.
Lester Holt
Anyway. You guys are the best.
Tom Brokaw
Thanks for all the laughs. And, Fritzy, keep doing your thing, man.
Lester Holt
All right.
Tom Brokaw
Thanks, Alex.
Lester Holt
Thank you, Alex. Yeah, we kind of stumbled on this LeBron thing, and it was only because, you know, social media said that he has no tricks. He has nothing in the bag. And I said, he scored 40,000 points. That's even more impressive. He didn't have a go to shot or move, and he scored 40,000 points. He was never a shooter. He was always a scorer. He just. Once again, he's Never going to be better than Michael Jordan in most people's eyes who saw Michael Jordan play, just not going to happen. And they're just different players. LeBron was more Magic than he was Michael, you know, and, and to watch him in a high school basketball game where he is 6, 8, 6, 9, and most of his teammates were maybe, maybe 6ft, most of them were smaller. And he was unbelievable at passing that. He, he really enjoyed finding the open man. So that kind of how he played. And then he worked on that shot because he doesn't have a good shot. It's not good form. His son has a better shot than he does, but he's still a great scorer. The greatest scorer of all time without a signature move. Pretty incredible. Pretty. Yes, Marv. That's what made him such a hot commodity, because when we saw him on the COVID of Sports Illustrated, it was like a high school junior could be a lottery pick. You're just like, why?
Tom Brokaw
And then we see the game on.
Lester Holt
ESPN where he goes full speed, turns his head one way and does a behind the back bounce pass. You're like, oh, never mind. I get it. And once again, Sports Illustrated came up with the chosen one. They, they came up with the headline. That was the title of the article. Now, I don't know if a junior in high school has veto power to say, hey, don't put the chosen one there, but he lived up to the hype. Bryce Harper lived up to the hype when he was on the COVID of Sports illustrated at what, 15 or 16 years of age. Tom Bernucci did that cover story. Yes, Todd.
Tom Brokaw
Veto power.
Lester Holt
Not he.
Tom Brokaw
I'm glad you clarified that. He never said, hey, call me the chosen one because I'm the best.
Lester Holt
Yeah. Yes, Marvin. And a man named Sonny Ficaro found him. He kind of knew what he was talking about. Sunny was trying to get him a hundred million dollar deal and thought he had. A hundred. He thought he had LeBron signed with Adidas. Adidas is still regretting that. Oh, my God. And, and Sonny, who I, you know what? Once I keep talking about these people should be in the hall of Fame. Mel Kuiper, I want him in the hall of Fame. Sonny Vaccaro should be in the hall of Fame. Feels like there's somebody else. I'm supposed to get into the hall of Fame. Oh, you got a list. Let's think about it. Yeah, but, but I do want Mel to get into the hall of Fame. And, and Sonny Vaccaro. But Sonny, he knew when he was getting Jordan for Nike what Adidas was going to do in that meeting with Michael Jordan. And if you watch the movie, that's exactly what happened. Adidas. Barry Melrose is the other guy. I want to get into the whole thing. Thank you, Paulie. Barry Melrose. But the fact that Adidas missed out on Michael and missed out on Lebron, it's pretty remarkable. Yeah.
Tom Brokaw
Paulie LeBron's deal out of high school was seven years, $87 million with Nike. He was still actively in high school when he signed the deal.
Lester Holt

Very good. They're proud of Rollins College. I haven't heard that about this Rollins College Taurus in a long time. Got through in 1978. How you doing at any boy?
Lester Holt
I'm doing great. And. And I want to play to your strengths here because I know you love your Tennis.
Tom Brokaw
Right.
Lester Holt
And I, I know that men's final, that this is an old timer and maybe it leads to these two being old timers as well. So I'll let you have the stage to give us your passion.
Tom Brokaw
Well, I think that from a match standpoint I think the center played so well in that fifth set I think was very, very important. I think if he kind of fell apart in the fifth set and he got broken in the first game and say lost a routine one, I think everybody would remember the fact that he had the three match points and lost it in the fourth set. The fact that he played so well in the fifth and was actually two points away from winning at 15:35,6 when Alcaraz was serving I think, you know, puts this at a higher level than normal. Now the tiebreaker was so dominant by Alcaraz because he was so good. So maybe that comes down a notch. But you know every match is going to be compared Dan, as you know the greatness of these finals to Federer, Nadal in 08 when you know, nine, seven in the fifth in the darkness at Wimbledon. But this matches is, you know it was a, again the personalities aren't quite the same. Those two were, you know, all time greats when they played that classic, you know, in London. But this was an incredible match. The fact they didn't take a bathroom break, you know they gave each other line calls 5 hours and 28 minutes, you know there was just a lot, I mean you never, you didn't know who was going to win into the very end. I mean Federer was fighting uphill the whole way through. I mean Alcaraz, you know, once he got that third, won the third set and then won a four set tiebreaker, I thought he was going to win. And here comes center, I mean it was an all timer, I mean it really was. So you know, for a guy like me, I sat there at 9 o' clock, I had golf ready to go at 1:30 I had a pass on golf which bothered me and I blew off my threesome which I'm sure they weren't pleased about. But how could I leave, you know, matches over 3 o' clock in the afternoon, how could I leave? You know I loved it, I thought, you know, I don't know how you feel about it. You love the sports like I do the knit sports and this is a knit sport, tennis. I thought it was the second best event I've seen this year. I think McElroy's Sunday at the Masters was number, number one way he had to win that, you know, the pressure on him. They play off with Rose and I think this was number two. The difference with the McElroy one was that was really only about McElroy. This was about the both tennis players. You know, really wasn't that much about Justin Rose. It was really about McElroy. Could he get rid of the demons? This was about both. So, you know, I think this is 1, 2 for the year as far as sports are concerned. I'm not going to count Bill's chiefs because that to me was the last year. That was the last year's season scenario. But I loved it. I'm sure you did too. You love these sports. I loved it from that standpoint.
Lester Holt
Yeah. And I go back to. Gosh, I'm trying to think first time that I met McEnroe and first time I interviewed him. But I used to go out to that tournament on Long island and yeah, so I would go out there and you know, Lendo, Lendo had the great line because I would say, why do you. How come you're so successful against McEnroe? And he goes, it's so easy. Forehand, forehand, backhand winner. And I went forehand, forehand, backhand winner. And I. He was so matter of fact about that because he, he just was, he was that robotic type. Didn't have personality. Martina was different, but she had a personality as well. But you know, when Chris Everett was there and you know, I, I was in New York, so I was able to cover, you know, we would do US Open or, you know, the Virginia Slims. One of my first dates, I took my wife to the Virginia Slims and it's Hanuman Likova is playing and I remember my wife's talking during the match and Hanuman Leaka is getting ready to serve and she looks over and I said to my wife, I said, you got to be quiet. And then so you know, that I didn't scold her. But Hanuman, you got the point.
Tom Brokaw
Yeah, I used to go to Forest Hills all the time when I was. My mother used to take me to Forest Hills all the time in the late 60s, you know, the grass courts at Forest Hills, you know, I mean, and Lento's got more of a personality than you think is. He's a good interview. Lend him.
Lester Holt
Back then he wasn't. Back then he, he was not.
Tom Brokaw
He'll give you something. He lives up where we live up here.
Lester Holt
Yeah, like Venus Garolitis had as a great personality. Just didn't have the game that go along with a great personality. He would say really talented, but he, he was, he was a fun guy to be around.
Tom Brokaw
Yeah. Beat Arthur Ash the year. As you know, Ash beat Connors and the next year Garolatis beat Ash in the first round. I think he beat him eight, six and a fifth. I also like the tiebreaker scenario too there, Dan. We haven't really seen it in the Grand Slams in a fifth set yet. I like the first to ten over first to seven. Yeah, I think to me that's fair. It's like playing a set. It's like playing a half a set. So I like that too. Listen, I understand it's a niche sport. I don't want to sit there and say that the whole world had to pay attention to this. I'm sure the rating wasn't great, but from a sporting perspective and you are, you know, have a lot more experience in national TV and all this stuff than I do. A little older than me. I tell you that. You're a little older than me, but you appreciate all the greatness of all the, all the sports. And I think you probably appreciate something what you saw there on Sunday afternoon too.
Lester Holt
Christopher Mad Dog Russo, host of Mad Dog unleashed on Sirius XM82. You can see him with Stephen A on ESPN's First Take on Wednesdays. I'm trying to understand the Jason Kidd situation. You have Cooper Flag coming to town, generational talent, I think.
Tom Brokaw
Absolutely.
Lester Holt
Now you're asking for permission or there's mutual interest in you coaching the Knicks. And the only reason why I think he'd be interested is that you're getting Giannis, that Giannis would want to play with J Kid. But why would you want to leave Dallas? I mean, I know he spent a little time in his career with the Knicks, but not enough where you go, boy, he's one of the all time Nick greats. But why would you leave Dallas to go to the Knicks unless you were getting Giannis? Chris?
Tom Brokaw
Yeah, I don't think Milwaukee is going to trade Giannis to the next same conference. I don't think that's going to happen. I think San Antonio is possible. What do the Knicks have to give the bucks that they can build around? I mean this is. If you trade Giannis, you got to get, you know, Castle and a couple of picks from San Antonio. You got to do what Oklahoma City did when they traded Anthony and got, and got sga. I mean you can't. What do you want, Carl Anthony Towns? What's that going to do you? So that doesn't make any sense to me. And I'm with you 100%. Now, maybe kid feels he's more money involved. You know, maybe there's, you know, not a lot of love with the whole thing with Dallas because he didn't want Luka to be traded. I mean, I don't love Kidd anyway. I wouldn't go near him if it was my team. I know him in Brunson, so I'm not saying he wouldn't be a bad choice, but he doesn't appeal to me. But overall, your point is well taken. I mean, Cooper Flagg is 17 years old, 18 years old. I mean, unless we got it all wrong, he is going to be a great NBA player. And he got him for the next 12, 13 years. I mean, why would you not want to coach him? The Knicks don't have anybody like that. I mean, the Knicks are older. I mean, it's an easier conference. But, I mean, why wouldn't you want to deal with Flag? You're going to get Kyrie back. You got a good front court. You got a lot of young players in that front court. You know, Davis has got a year or two left. I'm with you 100%. The Knick job would not be that attractive to me. And I wouldn't want to work for Dolan anyway. I mean, I don't care what anybody says. Dolan is the guy who fired Thibodeau. I mean, I don't think it was Leon Rose. I thought it was. This is just me. I don't know. I think Dolan said, I just don't want to coach my team anymore. And Rose had to do the dirty work, but I wouldn't want to work for him. So from that standpoint. Now, I know he played for Dolan, so maybe there's a kinship there, but overall, your point is well taken. Why would you want to leave the Mavericks? And, you know, it's a good organization, despite the trade. It's a good organization and I got the first pick in a draft. It's good coach, place to coach. You sort of get a little overshadowed by the Cowboys, which is good. The media is not going to be as rough on you. To me, I wouldn't leave, but it sounds like he's going to go. And I don't know about you, I don't think the Bucks. He's got two years left in his contract, not one. Why would the Bucks shut him into the Knicks for call Anthony Towns and, you know, a draft pick. Why would you do that? Shop them around to a team in the west to get a lot of young players. And San Antonio is perfect because they would probably give you Castle and they probably would give you the second and the 14th pick in the draft. That's what I would do if I was Milwaukee wanting to trade Giannis myself. That's what I would do.
Lester Holt
I mentioned this this morning to start the show, stumbled upon this, where social media was talking about LeBron James, that he doesn't have a signature move. Now the expression was that he doesn't have the bag, the bag of tricks. And I said, isn't that more remarkable that he doesn't have a signature move and he scored 40,000 points?
Tom Brokaw
I totally agree with you 100%.
Lester Holt
But can you remember though, Chris, somebody of this magnitude who has been criticized as much as LeBron has? I mean, Brady was criticized a lot, but there seems to be downright hatred for LeBron.
Tom Brokaw
I think there's jealousy because, you know, he was such a phenom out of high school. I think there's jealousy because he was anointed the next Jordan right away and that bothered people. Obviously, going away the way he went to Miami and joining Miami, didn't you know, that was an issue too. But he's always stayed out of trouble. He's never gotten himself in any kind of hot water off the court, per se. He gives you everything he's got. I mean, listen, he's not. He's not as good as Jordan. That's just me. He's better. He's the best 40 year old of all time. But in, you know, if I had to take one, I would take Jordan. But I agree with you, he takes a lot of. Who cares what sort of signature movie has. He's won. He won two championships, he's won four titles. I mean, you know, all right, he doesn't have the sky hook like Kareem. I mean, I get it. Big deal. Doesn't have the dip, you know, the dip shot like Chamberlain had. You know, big deal, a little finger roll, you know, Jordan, step back. He doesn't have that. I get. Who cares? I mean, I agree with you. He's an all timer. You know, I'm not in love with him, but I mean, that's me. I'm being harsh on him. Your overall point is well taken. The block shot against Iguodala, it was an incredible block shot. Probably helped him as much as the Irving shot win a championship in that game seven against Golden State that year. And he won a title for Cleveland. So to me, he made good when he left Miami, he went back to Cleveland and won a championship, which I think that he had to do, and he did. So he's, you know, he, he, he, he, he, he answered the box there and you know, he's still going strong. Now listen, I don't know if he's going to win another one because I don't know where Dallas is, you know, Luca, you know, I just don't know where Dallas is. A lot of young teams in the Western Conference, but, you know, he's an old timer and it's unfair that he, you know, he can take it. He gets, you know, he's getting paid a fortune. He can take it. And the Stephen A. Smith thing, Stephen A. Thing was weird. You know, he shouldn't be that worried about what Stephen A. Says about his kid. And you know, let's face it, they drafted Bronny because LeBron was a Laker. They never would have done that. They did it for LeBron. I didn't love that either. And he probably shouldn't have made a big deal about it. Who cares what anybody says about what you're, you know, bottom line is though, he's an all timer. I'm with you. And I'll tell you, the NBA needs some juice here. They need a good game three.
Lester Holt
Yes.
Tom Brokaw
They need a good game three. Game two is a terrible game. Game one was only good in the last five minutes. The ratings have been terrible. They need a good game three tomorrow night. That's important for the NBA. Really is. They need a good game.
Lester Holt
This obsession with Aaron Rodgers and now he's, now he's back. I mean, the amount of programming that Aaron Rodgers and LeBron James have been responsible for at networks is remarkable. That when they retire, like there's going to be some real soul searching at networks to go. Who are we talking about now? What are we talking about? And with Aaron Rodgers, I think this was a handshake deal. I think he's got great respect for Mike Tomlinson and okay, he didn't go in early, I'd like to see that. But he's there and he signed a team friendly deal. I don't think it solves their quarterbacking problem. I mean it, it kicks it can down the road for another year.
Tom Brokaw
That's what it does.
Lester Holt
But this is really more about the Steelers than it is Aaron Rodgers. Rodgers said, hey, here's, here's the time frame. The Steelers, the proud franchise, they acquiesced Aaron Rodgers. So I don't, I don't blame Rogers. Other than do you want to be great with this team, then get in there and get to know these players. Other than that, he took his time. He's been through this process before. Many, many, many times. The Steelers, to me, they bowed down.
Tom Brokaw
Yeah, and I don't blame them though, Dan. I mean, you know Mason Rudolph, I mean, I know the Steeler fan doesn't love it because I talk to him all the time. I'm sure you do too. Well, you don't love it now, but if you left Randolph be the quarterback and you're two and five after week seven, you'd be booing and going crazy that you don't have a quarterback on your team. Now I understand that Rodgers, you know, last year with the jets was certainly very uneven and not great. He wasn't great in the fourth quarter, but he did throw for 4,000 yards. I mean he did throw a lot of touchdown passes and compared to interceptions and finished the season better. And he is a better quarterback than Russell Wilson and he's a better quarterback than Mason Rudolph. The team is better than the Jets. They have a better defense. Defense. They got a better cultural situation. They got a better owner, they got a better, you know, Tomlins better than Salah. So I think he's walked and he's a year removed now from the Killies. So he's, you know, he should be a little better. I could care less if he didn't show up for the voluntary OTAs. Who cares? It's a long way to September 8th. I'm assuming he's going to be raring to go against the jets that Sunday afternoon when he plays. What's the date on it? The 6th or 7th of September. I mean, I understand that it's only a one year thing. I understand that you still don't have an answer for you at the position. But as far as the situation goes for the Steelers, they're a better team now than they were, let's say a week ago with Mason Rudolph. So it's not ideal. He does suck a lot of oxygen out of the room. It drives you crazy with McAfee on a day in, day out basis. But they're a better team today than they were last week. They'd be more competitive this year in the afc, AFC North. So I, I can live with it if I'm a Steeler fan myself.
Lester Holt
Anyway, if I gave you one question to Aaron Rodgers, what would it be?
Tom Brokaw
1. I can ask him anything. One question. Wow, that's an interesting one. One question. The portrayal of you is you always think you're the smartest guy in the room because he does think that he's smarter than you, and he wants to let you know it. Is that a false portrayal or is that an accurate portrayal? How's that? Something like that.
Lester Holt
He'd probably say it's accurate.
Tom Brokaw
Yeah, probably would. He probably would. And let's face it, Danny, he hasn't been great recently. He hasn't been great in a big game. You know, he was bad against San Francisco in the playoff game. Remember that game in the snow? And he didn't play very well. Yeah, no, he didn't play well against Brady. When Tampa went there in the. In the NFC Championship game, he, you know, they kicked the field goal when they were down. You know, he didn't. He didn't throw the ball in the end zone on that third down. Remember that famous play, you know, against Detroit? The last game of the year, or they would have won. They would have made the playoffs. He didn't play great in that game either. He didn't have a great year. So he hasn't been great in the last three or four years. And he's 42 years of age. So if you're one of those who thinks that, you know, he's way past his prime and he's no better than. A little better than average, that's a hard one for you and me to argue if we think the Steelers are a better team with Rogers on the. At the quarterback spot. But the bottom line, to me, I still think he's better than Wilson and he's better than Mason Rudolph, so take your chances.
Lester Holt
Thanks for combing your hair for this appearance.
Tom Brokaw
Yeah, I did look.
Lester Holt
I washed it.
Tom Brokaw
I washed it and I saved. And I wore a nice sweater just for you.
Lester Holt
I'd bring the beard back.
Tom Brokaw
Yeah. You know, maybe in the summertime, you know, I'm going to Wimbledon for the first time. Did you know that?
Lester Holt
I did not.
Tom Brokaw
Two days. Never been. I'll be there the first two days of the tournament. Not working as a thing.
Lester Holt
I think you'll be surprised when you go inside that it's. It's smaller than what you think.
Tom Brokaw
Oh, really?
Lester Holt
Yeah. When I went to Notre Dame and I went to a game there, first time I. I got in there and it. It just felt smaller. You know, certain things on tv, they'll make it look larger. And you. You get in there and you're like, oh, wow. It's, you know, like Fenway. First time you go to Fenway.
Tom Brokaw
Absolutely.
Lester Holt
You're like, damn, that left field wall is Is right there.
Tom Brokaw
And it's tiny city block, the whole bit.
Lester Holt
But looking around, walking around Wimbledon, it's. It's wonderful. There's so much to see. Yeah. So much. Yeah.
Tom Brokaw
I'm going to do the first two days, so if I don't set the first day, I'll be there. So I can see sinner one day because he'll play. He'll be at the second seed. And I can see Aqua as another day because they will split up the two seeds, so I'll be able to see both of them play.
Lester Holt
Have you played Oakmont?
Tom Brokaw
I have not.
Lester Holt
Okay. Yes.
Tom Brokaw
I hear it's great, right? It's impossibly hard.
Lester Holt
I wouldn't. I wouldn't want to play it again too long, but I loved it. Yeah. I mean, it's just tough. It was just too tough. Yeah.
Tom Brokaw
Interrupt your dead.
Lester Holt
The greens. The greens are, you know, lightning fast. If you're above the hole, like, forget it. That's where you tell somebody down at the bottom of the green, hey, would you stop my ball before it, you know, rolls 50 yards? Yeah, it. It. But it'll be. It'll be a challenge. And they make no excuses of they want this to be a challenge. And it certainly will be.
Tom Brokaw
Yeah. Looking forward to it. Good job, Danny.

One of my favorite entertainers, Sly Stone, passed away yesterday. What was he, in his 80s? Like, 82?
Tom Brokaw
Dang.
Lester Holt
Considering what he put himself through, that's pretty good life. But I saw a documentary and they slide this Family Stone. They were playing in a, like a Central park or in Central park somewhere in New York City. And it was just this big concert series, sort of like a Woodstock type. And you had all of these black artists. And the guys would come out and they'd have like a suit and tie on. And Sly in the Family Stone came out and it was just completely different. You want to look at what Prince based, some of what he did, and look at Sly and the Family Stone. It was, I mean, even Parliament, George Clinton, I mean, there's a lot of people who owe a lot to Sly in the Family Stone, but Sly, it was a great sound. He was dressed up. And that was a completely different look at that, that show, that concert. Yes, Marvin, watching this documentary and seeing the impact that he's had on so many people in the past 50 years.
Tom Brokaw
You would think they were.
Lester Holt
They were hot for 15 years. That was maybe like an eight year stretch. Yeah. That they were on fire like that. And what he did was unbelievable. Yeah, he retired and then he came back and he was on David Letterman. David goes, well, why did you retire? He goes, I was tired, so I retired. Why'd you come back? I needed the money. So he staged a comeback. Yeah.
Tom Brokaw
Paul just did a search about Sly and the Family Stone and Princess Prince covered his songs often in concerts. Many different times. They said over 300 times over the years. Covered their song.
Lester Holt
Yeah, I mean, there was a vibe to it. It sounded great. It was different. And he was different too. I mean, even, you know, Rick James, there's a lot of different artists who probably sampled off Sly in the Family Stone. Todd, we got through the song today.
Tom Brokaw
We did. Thank you for humoring me.
Lester Holt

Dan and Chris Russo kick off their discussion by highlighting Oakmont's notorious reputation in the golfing world. Oakmont Country Club has consistently been ranked among the most challenging courses for PGA players, making it a prime venue for the U.S. Open.

The conversation delves into how Oakmont's design influences player performance and tournament outcomes. The fast greens and dense rough demand precision and strategic play, often leading to higher scores and intense competition.
Russo adds his perspective on how modern golfers, like Scotty Scheffler, need to adapt their strategies to succeed on such a demanding course.
Patrick and Russo compare Oakmont to other U.S. Open venues, noting that while the challenge remains a staple of the tournament, Oakmont's particular features set it apart.

Chris Russo [07:32]: “It's a sport that polices itself. Whatever happens, teams like Florida and Edmonton will handle their end of things responsibly.”

Chris Russo [35:39]: “He's an all-timer. He's the best 40-year-old of all time. But if I had to choose, I would take Jordan.”
