Do we have an update, Paulie?
Dan Patrick
A little bit. Lindsey Vaughn posted a half an hour ago on her Instagram. She's discussing the situations with her doctors and will undergo further exams. It's her left knee. She said. There's a very difficult outcome one week before the Olympics.
Marv Albert
But if there's one thing I know.

Todd Fritz

Marv Albert
What else? You went too fast.
Todd Fritz
Okay.
Marv Albert
Because you went. You went too fast.
Todd Fritz
Mango habanero glazed pork loin.
Marv Albert
Oh, wow. Perfect for me on a. On the Shabbat.
Todd Fritz
Yeah.
Marv Albert
Huh? Okay.
Todd Fritz

Marv Albert
Thank you. Appreciate that. Yeah, you went too fast.
Todd Fritz
But okay, now maybe you could do a. A show, a Jewish show. The bottom line.
Marv Albert
That's next level.
Todd Fritz
Thank you. Good. Yeah.
Marv Albert
Next level. Wait a minute. No, that's. That's the. That's the score scroll at the bottom of the screen.

Marv Albert
That's. How are you, Dan? I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I was just taking notes.
Todd Fritz
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
I apologize. Thank you.
Todd Fritz
The. The one storyline that the commissioner, you know, during his State of the Union next week. Is there. Is there an overriding topic that you think. Because normally there is something. The commissioner will be responding, too, about ongoing. But is there something this year?
Marv Albert
I guess it'll be probably officiating. It always is. Certainly coming off of a Bills Broncos game that left an owner in the NFL steaming about it. And there's. There. There's always that. There's gambling. What the NFL feels about that. What else could possibly be. He'll definitely be asked about Belichick, even though he has nothing to do with it. Zero to do with it. And so that'll be. That'll be of interest, certainly, since people think that a lot of the voters who did not vote for Bill Belichick feel that Spygate is front and center for that. And clearly that was something that he was taking care of for. For the NFL. So I'm sure that'll be brought up to him. I don't know what. Whatever. Whatever else is on the minds of. Of the media. Maybe Bad Bunny. Bring that up one more time. Run. Run that back.
Todd Fritz
Oh, yeah.
Marv Albert
So I don't know. But that. That. That might be the greatest hits we'll see next week.
Todd Fritz
Tp I remember asking the commissioner, and I said, where are the tapes from spiking?
Marv Albert
Right?
Todd Fritz
And he said, we destroyed them. And I went, why? He said, well, we had no use for them. Wouldn't you love to at least be able to see what exactly it was?
Marv Albert
Is that why he hasn't been back on that?
Todd Fritz
I think that was the last time Paulie was at the last time. It absolutely was the last time. Yeah.
Marv Albert
He's looking for the mango habanero.
Todd Fritz
Yeah, yeah.
Marv Albert
What? Grand pork loin. Yeah, yeah, yeah. This is all going to be brought up again. And it's interesting because the last time the Seahawks and the Patriots played one another, it was full on Deflategate. It was full on Belichick dropping Mona Lisa veto references to say, go ask Tom what's going on. Like, that was the last time these two teams played each other. And now Belichick not being in the hall of Fame is. Is going to be front and center. I'm sure the last RG One about that next week.
Todd Fritz
Yeah. I'm trying to figure this out. That. And, and as I said yesterday, it's your vote. Whatever you do with your vote. Fine. Just tell Me how you came to your conclusion. I might not agree with it, but it is your vote. You've earned the right to vote on this process. The problem that I'm having is when you find that some voters thought, well, Kenny Anderson, Roger Craig, L.C. greenwood, they're not going to get the required votes. Maybe I vote for them because Belichick and Kraft are eventually going to get in. I don't want you changing the rules midstream. You can change the process after the voting. I just don't think you should be saying, well, this is how I'm going to do it. You're told, vote for hall of Famers, not, this guy might not get in and this guy we know is going to get him. I have a problem with that.
Marv Albert
Yeah, I don't blame you. I have a similar problem with it. Listen, the voting just needs to be changed. I understand the hall of Fame doesn't want the induction ceremony to go start from noon and everybody's got a pack of dinner, you know, And I understand that there's five candidates who get in due to, if you will, regular order in their initial years of eligibility. And then they, there's only room for three more. They don't want any more than eight. But basically, if you're going to have three senior candidates, have an up and down vote on those three. If you're going to have one coach candidate, one contributor candidate, have an up and down vote. Don't lump them all together. And if there's 10 people who get inducted, so be it. But that's a different story. Is Bill Belichick worthy of being a Hall of Famer? Yes or no? Don't say that he's eventually going to get in. I want to, I want to give a shot to somebody else. Is he worthy of enshrinement in the Pro Football hall of Fame? And even with all this stuff that you and I were talking about just for the last few minutes, deflate Gates, Spygate, whatever gates you want to bring up. I wasn't sitting there thinking, this is going to be disqualifying for Bill Belichick when his time to be enshrined comes up. His numbers are absurd to the point where whenever you feel the need to actually bring them up to make a case for him, you feel silly doing it. You know, it's, it's nuts that he is not a first ballot hall of Famer, regardless of the reasons why. And, you know, I know one writer said that these three senior candidates are up now. They may never be up again. That's why I'm going to give them their shot. Bob Kraft is 84 years old.
Todd Fritz
Yeah, I know.
Marv Albert
You know, so, I mean, it's, it's kind of nuts. And it's going to be even more glaring with the Patriots being in the bowl when Belichick's not standing on the stage in six nights.
Todd Fritz
Yeah, it's like an actor up for an Academy Award, but we're not going to give it to you because you did that terrible movie. You know, it's years ago. Yeah. Like, you know, you're Eddie Murphy and you did Norbit. I'm sorry, we can't honor you.
Marv Albert
Well, that is disqualifying, Dan. I mean, let's be honest.
Todd Fritz
I never straight up here. I never saw Norbit with, with Eddie Murphy. But we're talking to Rich Eisen, host of the Rich Eisen show on the Mothership, NFL game day morning host on NFL Network. Coaching moves any. We're still waiting for Raiders and Cardinals. Feels like Clint Kubiak is probably getting one of those jobs.
Marv Albert
It's all, it's all just a big shrug emoji to me, Dan, you know, there, there, there seems to be a now what portion of this with coaches who have been around a long time and have a track record of general success as the floor and excellent seasons that wind up short of the ultimate as the ceiling. And the question is, and I love Jesse Minter, you know, he, he's a guy who was the defensive coordinator for my champion Wolverines a couple of years ago. He's outstanding. And you take a look at Joe Brady and what he was able to do in his college time as a passing game coordinator for LSU's 60 touchdown Joe Burrow season and what he's been able to do with Josh Allen since, getting his hands on the playbook there. But when push comes to shove, if they are so fortunate to get to an AFC Championship game, what is going to happen that will get them over the hump in a way that John Harbaugh was held accountable for and Sean McDermott was held accountable for in Buffalo. Do we know that? Absolutely not. This past weekend is a perfect case in point? Sean McVay is as good as they come. There were two snaps inside the red zone, third and fourth downs, the execution wasn't there, and an outstanding Rams season goes down the tubes. Do you hold Sean McVeigh accountable for that? Will we see at one point, you know, a perturbed Stan Kroenke in front of a gathered media saying at the end of the day we just didn't get where we wanted to go for too long. And Sean McVeigh is now on the market, which would be nuts. Case in point. We just don't know. I don't know. Some hires feel good, some, some feel off, but I just don't know how it's going to play out. Nor do the owners who just made these hires.
Todd Fritz
Well, okay, when Mike McDonald got hired in Seattle.
Marv Albert
Yes.
Todd Fritz
There nobody was going on. Oh my God, they got. This guy's unbelievable. He's low key defensive coordinator. Didn't know much about him and he's done a great job. I don't know if Todd Monken is going to be good in Cleveland. Liam Cohen did a great job. We, we goofed on him with his opening press conference. You know, I still don't know if Nick Sirianni is a great coach. Jonathan Gannon is out. Like, you just start to look around and you go, I have no idea. I have no idea.
Marv Albert
Which is why I have no problem. And give all the credit in the world to the packers. Like, okay, we know who we have in Matt LaFleur. We know, we know what he can do. We know what he has done. So why are we going to throw all of that overboard and start from scratch? Why would we do that now? You know, if there was somebody like Vrabel who was a complete no brainer last year for New England to go grab him and that was even in advance of clearly knowing that they were just going to be 17 regular season weeks away from a bowl journey in the playoffs, but that, you know, Ben Johnson was another one. There was just really nobody that was out there right now. That's just. Oh, I get it. And we may see one of these coaches turn into Mike McDonald and, or Liam Cohen and, and obviously we'll say great hire. But right now it is, as I said, just one big shrug emoji. Have no idea. None.
Todd Fritz
If Sam Darnold wins the Super Bowl. Yeah. And wins the mvp, can we take away blame from Sam Darnold for good?
Marv Albert
Blame for what? Taking too long, you know? You know what I mean? Like again, you've had so many quarterbacks on your show, Dan, over the years and so many of them were like Drake May, I'm sure, where it's clear, straight out of the box, he's the guy. And then there is a bunch of them who are like Sam Darnold. I've once asked Jared Goff, how long should a quarterback get to prove he's NFL franchise worthy and he Said five to six years. And this is a first overall pick. Kurt Warner talks about this all the time, that we always throw names out there as busts because they aren't in the right spot or they, they, they're, they're not performing well in a certain spot, but at the end of the day, they're not in the right spot. I mean, Todd Bowles to Adam Gase to Robert Sala with a second overall pick. Let's take a new kid. That's why Sam Darnold didn't work out in New York, not because he was trash. Goes to Carolina. There's Matt Rule, he gets bounced. Covid happens, you know, and then he winds up in San Francisco, winds up in Minnesota. Who went ahead and drafted somebody the year that they snagged him on a flyer and he took off. And, and Seattle is, is getting the benefits of getting Sam Darnold at the right time with the right coach and the right setup.
Todd Fritz
But this is why I'm concerned about Mendoza going to the Raiders, right? And I said, this isn't an indictment on him, it's an indictment on the organization. You don't have an offensive line, and I've seen this many, many times. I would be open to trading that pick because I need help. I don't want to find my franchise quarterback before I find my offensive line before. I mean, you win with offensive and defensive line and I just worry about you're going to bring him in there and he may be running for his life like David Carr did with the Texans.
Marv Albert
Right. And. But you could see how if you draft the right guy and then you draft the right people as well, and then you make the right free agent moves, in two years, you could be the New England Patriots in Super Bowl 62.
Todd Fritz
But I have to trust that the Raiders can do that.
Marv Albert
Yeah, that's true. And, you know, this past year wasn't a great first step for the new administration there, to say the least. But at the end of the day, you have to take a look and say, we're in Las Vegas. Should, should we go ahead and snag a guy who's done what he's done at the collegiate level, who we know will be in bed by curfew in Sin City every night, you know, like, I don't see Fernando Mendoza clubbing it up, you know, and having to be disciplined by having to sit out the first drive like a couple of Dallas Cowboys had to be in Vegas this past year. So you have to make those moves, you know, if you can, how Long.
Todd Fritz
Is the pre game.
Marv Albert
As you know, Dan, it started five minutes ago. Why would you even ask that question? I'm late for it. 8 and a half hours.
Todd Fritz
Yeah.
Marv Albert

Marv Albert
Tide is specifically designed to fight any.
Todd Fritz
Stain you throw at it.
Dan Patrick
Even in cold butter.
Todd Fritz
Yep. Chocolate ice cream. Sure thing. Barbecue sauce. Tide's got you covered. You don't need to use warm water. Additionally, Tide pods let you confidently fight tough stains with new coldzyme technology.
Marv Albert
Just remember, if it's gotta be clean.
Todd Fritz
It'S gotta be Tide. I saw where NBC and Peacock, they are going to do baseball this year and I think they went out and signed our good buddy Joey Votto who would be awesome. I think as an analyst that guy is smart, he is colorful and if you heard those interviews when he would join us, former Cincinnati Red first baseman, he was great. So there's a couple of people that they're looking at. Bob Costa is going to come back and do play by play Sunday or Sunday baseball. So that'll be great as well. We'll get to more phone calls coming up, we make way for the Seattle Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold in his eighth seed season in the NFL and taking his team to the Super Bowl. Let me start there. First recollection of a Super bowl growing up was which one?
Dan Patrick
Oh, man, I think one of the first ones that comes to mind, you know, has got to be Colts, Bears, that one with Peyton Manning, Rex Grossman. You know, I'm sure there was one that happened before that that, you know, I could vaguely remember, but that was the, that was really the one that was etched into my memory just because we had a party, a Super bowl party with like all my Pop Warner football team and it was really fun. I think there might have been a bounce house or something right outside the house. And I just remember having a ton of fun. You know, it was, it was a good time and you know, I'm sure all the adults were having a great time as well. So now that, that was one that was kind of etched into my memory just because of, you know, how fun that experience was. Just being able to celebrate, you know, having a good Pop Warner season with my teammates and then, you know, being able to, being able to watch the game and all the, the fun things that come with the super bowl, you know, the halftime show and all that.
Todd Fritz
What, how does it feel to be the first USC quarterback to play in the Super Bowl?
Dan Patrick
Yeah, I saw that, I saw that after the game going around social media and didn't, didn't realize that obviously. But yeah, it's great to be able to represent the university and, you know, hopefully just represent them proudly at the game.
Todd Fritz
How do you make this a regular week? I know it's the biggest week of your life, but you find coaches will say or quarterbacks will say, we just try to make it normal. How do you go about doing that?
Dan Patrick
Yeah, I think, you know, trying to keep the routine the same throughout the week, throughout the, the week leading up to the super bowl and then getting, getting a lot of game plan stuff in this week, you know, because understanding that, you know, there's going to be a lot of media, going to be some media responsibilities the week of the super bowl, that, that'll take most of some of the time that I spend studying. So I think doing some of the game plan stuff this week and really studying, doubling down on kind of what the Pats do, what they like to do defensively in certain situations and kind of get ready as if the game were to be this. This upcoming Sunday, you know.
Todd Fritz
But are you going to learn more from watching Denver against New England or what you guys did against the Rams?
Dan Patrick
Yeah, I think, you know, it's. It's interesting, right, because that game was. It was a blizzard.
Todd Fritz
Right.
Dan Patrick
You know, it's, it's. And sometimes it's kind of even tough to see what they're doing on tape just because of, you know, how windy it was and how snowy it was at times. But, no, I think, you know, you learn a ton just by watching the other team. Obviously, there's, there's times where you can go back and learn a ton by watching yourself, watching some tendencies that maybe you've shown throughout the year, and you notice some things watching for sure of yourself. But I think, you know, being able to understand kind of what they're doing, especially being, you know, in a different conference and not being able to watch any New England tape throughout this entire season. Like, we just came off the stretch these last two games. We've played these teams three times throughout the season, so we had a really good idea of kind of what these defenses looked like. And, you know, I think that goes for a whole team, obviously. So we just got to do a really good job of understanding what New England presents on defense and, you know, what their kind of. What their core is, what they like to do and then kind of what their wrinkles are in certain situations.
Todd Fritz
Who reached out to you after the win that might surprise us?
Dan Patrick
Oh, shoot. A cool one was, was Luke Combs. I had a couple country, country singers reach out. Luke Combs, Kenny Chesney. Those are some cool ones. Obviously, you have former quarterbacks that reach out there. That is always really cool to be able to hear from guys like that. But, yeah, I think the, the celebrities and the country music singers and different celebrities that kind of reach out to you throughout that whole process that maybe I talked to at, you know, a Super Bowl a couple years ago when I wasn't playing in it or, you know, at a, you know, going to the Masters in Augusta, like, I might have bumped into to a certain person and forgot that I gave them my number. You know, like, just guys that. Guys that reach out like that, it's. It's so cool to be able to, you know, just continue to get people to reach out because, you know, I think that kind of makes me understand too, like, how. How important that game was how important winning that NFC Championship was and going to the super bowl, how big of a deal it is. And you know, I think there is, there's a balance there, right, because you want to understand, okay, like it's just the next game and it's a process, but at the same time, like, I want to enjoy this. I want to enjoy every single moment with my teammates and, and these coaches and even the media, like doing all the media, you know, leading up to the game, like, I want to be able to enjoy it because you never know when you're going to get back here. So, you know, there is, there is that double edged sword of kind of understanding to enjoy it, enjoying every single moment, but also kind of preparing and understanding that is, it is a process and we're going to treat it like the next game.
Todd Fritz
Talking to Sam Darnold, the Seahawks quarterback, have you played with a chip on your shoulder at any point in your NFL career?
Dan Patrick
You know, Dan, being honest with you, like, I don't, I don't ever felt like I had a chip on my shoulder. I just don't think that's really my personality. I've never been like that, you know, at any point in my life. You know, I've always just, I've always just worked hard and treated every single day as its own day. You know, I've never, you know, because I feel like just with me personally, like if I got too high or if I got too low, that affected me, that affected performance. So I feel like I was always just better if I just stayed right here, just even keeled and you know, that's, that's just kind of who I am. So I think. And that's what you learn throughout your career, right? You learn who you are as a person and you know, what works best for you in preparation and all those things. So for me, it was, it was, it's really important for me to just stay even keeled. And, and you know, I see, and I understand what people say throughout the years and you know, I understand that, you know, there's some things that have been said about me and people are saying, oh, you've proved the doubters wrong. But that's, that's not for me to say or for me to even really pay attention to because that at the end of the day, like, that doesn't matter and it doesn't affect my performance at all. Like, I just got to go out there and do my job every single day and. Because if I do anything other than that, if I think about the Doubters or proving anyone wrong. Like, I feel like I'm doing my team a disservice because I'm thinking about the wrong things.
Todd Fritz
Yeah. And. And I. Everybody wants to talk about your journey. And, you know, right after the game, you're asked about your journey and you're like, you know, my journey continues, I think. I don't know how many people sit there and go, I just won something. Now I gotta look back on what happened prior to this. And I. I thought your answers were mature, but I don't know how you, you know, you take those questions of, let's talk about the jets or let's talk about Carolina. Let's talk about all of these, you know, rough moments there when you're trying to focus on the game at hand, the, you know, the job at hand.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, for sure. It's, you know, I think just being able to handle it at this point in my career, too. It's. I. I feel like, even mentally, like, I. I feel like I handle it a little bit differently internally than I used to, you know, because I realize, like, it is a part of the journey and it is a part of who I am.
Todd Fritz
And what was it like before in. Internally?
Dan Patrick
Yeah, I think, like, I. I gave it a little more thought than I had to. Like, I paid a little bit more attention to it, and I guess, you know, I. I invested a little more thought into kind of what happened in the past, and I tried to, you know, okay, like, I. I threw this pick against this coverage, you know, back in 2019, like, I'm not going to do that again. It's like, no, sometimes mistakes happen, and, you know, you learn from it, and, you know, it's. You. You don't want to make the same mistakes again, but sometimes throughout your career, especially if it's a long career, like, those things are going to happen, but just being able to. To move on and to. To learn from those experiences, but move on. And. And, you know, the. The days in New York, the days in Carolina, like, those were. Those are part of my journey and they're part of my experience. And I loved every single part of it. Like, yeah, there were some lows that sucked. I'm not gonna lie to you. You know, and. And that's part of it, though. Like, I learned so much from that, and, you know, I'm able to move on. And it's. It's funny, like, after every single, you know, after every single game we lost or things that didn't go well, like, I was able to wake up that next day and see the sunrise and go into the building and see my teammates and have fun with my coaches. Like, you know, that's. That's a part of life. And, you know, I think being able to realize that at this point in my career, like, it allows you to. To kind of take it one day at a time and enjoy every single little moment that you get with. With your teammates. Because as we all say, like, we're never with the same team, you know, year in, year out. Yeah, you might be with some of the similar guys, especially if you stick with the same team, but, you know, there's. There's never all 70 that are the same throughout a season. So you just try to enjoy it as much as you can.
Todd Fritz
Did you keep all those jerseys?
Dan Patrick
Yeah, I have all. All my jerseys.
Todd Fritz
You got them framed?
Dan Patrick
I don't know if they're framed.
Marv Albert
They're.
Dan Patrick
They're definitely not all of them or frame, but yeah, I got them somewhere. They're up in the attic somewhere.
Todd Fritz
Explain the luxury of throwing to jsn.
Dan Patrick
Oh, man. Yeah, he's just a special talent. He's. He's someone that, you know, is very quarterback friendly. You know, he. He allows, you know, with his body language and the way that he runs routes, he's very friendly to throw to, but he doesn't. It doesn't make it easier to cover him, if that makes sense. Like, it's easy for me to kind of feel what he's thinking and what he's doing on the field and to read his body language, whether he's going to come out of a route at full speed or if he's going to come out of a route, maybe wrap the corner and show me his, you know, numbers and maybe slow down a little bit. But, you know, that doesn't. Like I said, that doesn't make it any easier on the defense. Like, he makes everything look the same with all the different routes and the different stems that come off those routes. So he does a really good job of that. He's really, like, he's really smart. He's really cognizant of how he wants to run routes. We're always talking and, you know, the dialogue that we share to be able to, you know, just talk about the little intrinsic intrinsics that, you know, come with running routes. And with me, like, sometimes I'm like, hey, dude, like, that route might be sweet, but that's going to take too long, and I'm not going to be able to hold on to the ball that long. So I think those little conversations that we have, you know, are very important obviously to our success. But he's, he's a special, special player to throw to. But, you know, I think the secret sauce that makes it work is, is the other guys in that receiving room as well. You know, the guys that are able to step up, whether they're, you know, playing special teams or whether they're going to, you know, have a special role for us, you know, catching touchdowns. So, you know, that's a, it's a really special group. JSN obviously is a huge part of it, but it definitely is a, is a special receiver group.
Todd Fritz
What about that one headed catch that he made?
Dan Patrick
Unbelievable. I don't know if, I don't know if the cameras caught my reaction on that, but I was kind of looking at our sideline, like, did that really just happen? But I don't know, it should never surprise us anymore. You know, he makes so many of these special catches and especially one handed catches. I always, you know, if he reaches out with one hand and he drops it, I usually blame myself for not throwing a spiral. So he could judge kind of where to put his hand on the football. So he's, he's a special, He's a special player, man.
Todd Fritz
Who's taking care of the tickets?
Dan Patrick
Beyonce.
Todd Fritz
Oh, yep.
Dan Patrick
Katie, my fiance. So she's, she's got a big. I probably shouldn't have said that just now. So she's probably gonna get bombarded, but she's. Yeah.
Todd Fritz
How many tickets are we gonna account for?
Dan Patrick
I don't know. We'll see. We'll see what happens. I might, you know, maybe able to get some people in a suite, hopefully. But, you know, it's.
Todd Fritz
I don't want you to lose money.
Dan Patrick
I think it's, I think it's upwards of 20. So.
Todd Fritz
Yeah, I don't want you to lose money playing in the super bowl, you know, as well.
Dan Patrick
We don't have to worry about that. We don't have to worry about that, Dan. That'll be, that'll be all right.
Todd Fritz
All right. Yeah. Poor fiance. She's got a tougher week leading up to the game than you do. Put it that way. You're gonna have.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, no doubt.
Todd Fritz
A lot of friends. A lot of, A lot of people it is. Who are saying they're your friends.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, exactly. It is an underrated responsibility, but that was the biggest. That was the biggest. You know, part of kind of this whole super bowl thing is being able to figure that stuff out early this week. So I don't have to worry about it next week. But I also, you know, all the people that are coming to the game are loved ones that I've known for a long time and they're not there for the wrong reasons. So that's a, that was also a very important part of that.
Todd Fritz
Well, congrats. You're taking the right approach. Enjoy it. You don't know when you'll be back, if you'll be back and absorb it all you can because it's going to go by so quickly on Sunday and win or lose, you know, you had a marvelous year. And my best to your parents.
Dan Patrick
All right, thanks, Dan. I appreciate you.
Todd Fritz
Sam Darnold seems pretty even keel. You know, no chip on the shoulder. It's all about moving forward. And I don't know how he's going to feel in a week from now when he's out in San Francisco. But right now saying all the right things. All right, last call for phone calls. What we learned, what's in store for Monday when we'll be in San Francisco? We'll come back after this. In the Dan Patrick show, Fox Sports Radio has the best sports talk lineup in the nation. Catch all of our shows@foxsportsradio.com and within the iHeartRadio app. Search FSR to listen live. Last show before we head to San Francisco. We'll be out there Monday through Friday. Please join us. The China Basin park will be set up there, which is in the shadows of Oracle Park. The San Francisco Giants owner Larry Bear is going to join us on the program on Monday and welcome us to San Francisco. They were gracious hosts in Arizona, their spring training home. They let us have the stadium and let us have the jumbotron. Let us go down in the basement, take BP and it was great. Great. We appreciated that for the Super Bowl a couple years ago. Alrighty. This day in sports history, what we learn, what's in store for Monday. And I don't know if anything stood out with Sam Darnold other than Sam seems, Sam seems chill. Don't get too high, too low. Try to take it all in. Four and a half point favorites. I don't think he's thinking legacy. I don't think he's thinking about the jets or his. Everybody wants to talk to him about, you know, his story, his journey. Sam doesn't want to talk about his journey. He's got to win the game. Doesn't matter what his journey is if he doesn't win the game. Yes, Todd.
Marv Albert
Sam, I am not too high not too low.
Todd Fritz
Respect that, Marvin.
Marv Albert
No one's legacy is really on the line for this Super Bowl. Correct. Like, there's no like legacy booster. Like if Drake May wins the super bowl, he's all right. But it's Sam Darnold. It's no Mahomes, no Jalen hurts, no emerging dynasties. Yeah.
Todd Fritz
But now it is a legacy boost for Sam Darnold because Sam, well, let me see. When he gets to the playoffs, can he win a big game here? You win this one and you're the mvp. Huge, huge legacy boost. And for Drake May to do it in his second year with those other quarterbacks that went before him, now you get a big head start. And this is a team that has draft picks and money and you got a great head coach. You're kind of set up to be successful for a few years.
Marv Albert
Yes, Marvin, but your legacy is just. He's not a bust. When we talk about legacy, I'm talking about the greatest ever. Like, you're in a different category.
Todd Fritz
Okay, well, no, nobody is in that category yet. But we might look back on this 10 years from now with Drake May and say, well, he got his first one back then his second year in the league or, you know, he never went back to the Super Bowl. Yeah, Paulie.
Dan Patrick
And this isn't like Nick Foles who was kind of a bounce around player with one good season. Sam Darnold, if he does this and gets super bowl mvp, he's got a lot of years going forward. He could build upon this with a really good franchise. And there may be a day when nobody remembers the jets days.
Todd Fritz
Oh, no, we'll always remember the jets days. Always.
Dan Patrick
At his hall of Fame thing, they'll point that out.
Todd Fritz
Yeah, always. And he's 28, but he's been in the league. This is his eighth season. So you go in at 20 and the jets swallow you up and didn't have a chance. And that's when you ask somebody to be a savior. I don't care how good you are. Walking in 20 years of age to a bad organization. I don't care how good you are. Yeah, Marv.
Marv Albert
So, Zach Wilson.
Dan Patrick
There's still time.
Todd Fritz
Yeah, I know. Five years from now we could be like Tommy damn, Zach Wilson. No, no, we might be going. And he's still in the league, huh? Jack in Wisconsin. Hi, Jack. What's on your mind today? Hey, dan.
Dan Patrick
Happy meet Friday 55101 pounds.
Todd Fritz
I want to ask you, who do you think deserves more credit for the Patriots dynasty? Bill Belichick or Tom Brady. We only have 10 minutes left in the show here, Jack. And you know, I. I look at it as equal. I think they. Tom leaned on Bill to give him a great defense. Bill leaned on Tom to give him a great offense. And you have to have both. Yes. Todd, how come shows don't debate that more?
Marv Albert
Brady versus we really got. I think we're onto something here. This could roll. We could roll with this for a few days.
Todd Fritz
Thank you, Todd. This day in sports history. Paul, I just got one for you here. This is a fun one.
Dan Patrick
Remember this? 2000, the New York Mets announced that Garth Brooks would be in spring training with the team on February 20th.
Todd Fritz
Remember when he had his alternate personality, Chris Gaines? Yeah. Is that what it was?
Dan Patrick
I think it was the story of.
Marv Albert
Chris Gaines or something.
Todd Fritz
Then he had like black hair and. Yeah, it was like a, like it's like goth era almost. I do. What was that all about? Then he went to spring training with the Mets. I think he played third base.
Dan Patrick
It was called the life of Chris Gaines. And he had little soul patch and black hair in his eyes.
Todd Fritz
Yeah, yeah. Yes, Todd, I think you'd agree. Chris lost.
Marv Albert
If you want to really add up what the success rate was of that Chris Gaines.
Todd Fritz
No, no, I got it. No, I got it.
Marv Albert
No reaction.
Todd Fritz
No goth.
Marv Albert
Well, do we need a goth version of a very successful country music singer? Probably not. How do you have to re. Identify? Why do you got to come up with another personality?
Todd Fritz
I don't get it. Why didn't you just sit this out? Billy Joel started rapping at some point.
Marv Albert
After doing the Garden for 150 shows. When we say like, what are you. What, why are we rapping now?
Todd Fritz
What just happened?
Marv Albert
We brought up the Christ Gaines thing. I'm a big Garth Brooks fan when he did that, I'm like, why are we jumping the shark? You were fine the way you were.
Todd Fritz
It wasn't a failure.
Dan Patrick
It sold a lot. Just got critiqued.
Marv Albert
Like what was happening. His career where he's like, I better come up with an alter ego because I'm just.
Todd Fritz
No one's interested in my music on this day. 2018. James Harden had 60 points, 10 rebounds and a 11 assists at the time. The highest scoring triple double in NBA history. Joker had 61 points in a triple double in 2025. Here comes. Here comes that what? Stat of the day. Cody in Texas. Hi, Cody. What's on your mind today?
Marv Albert
Hey, Dan. I think next week, if Robert Kraft.
Dan Patrick
Gets into the hall of Fame, we will have our answer as to why?
Todd Fritz
Bill is not in, but I wanted to bring up a real hot take for you. If you're the head coach, which one of the Dan, it's your coordinators is.
Marv Albert
Ready to become a head coach? Yes, I'm gonna answer that for the group. I'd say Paulie. He's, you know, he's the lead producer. He's executive producer. He's kind of in charge of so many different things. He's in your ear. He's looking up stories and stats all at once, so he seems most fit for that.
Todd Fritz
Okay. What kind of coordinator would you be?
Marv Albert
I would be the neurotic coordinator. Anytime someone had the slightest injury, I'd go run and get them and throw him in the blue tent and say, I don't know what's gonna happen to you, but I hope it could be okay.
Todd Fritz
Yes, Paul.
Dan Patrick
Todd would be the uncoordinated.
Marv Albert
I would. We've seen me cut. Would use scissors and sweep and lots and cut cake and. Yeah, I'd be that.
Todd Fritz
Thank you, Cody. So this is it. We're ready to go to San Francisco.
Marv Albert
Let's go.
Todd Fritz
Every day is the Super Bowl. Okay.
Marv Albert
Now more than ever.
Todd Fritz
Yes. When we get out there. But I want you to slow it down, okay?
Marv Albert
Could be the actual super bowl week. I do need to slow down.
Todd Fritz
Yeah, you do.
Marv Albert
Too much coffee, which I don't drink.
Todd Fritz
But let's. Let's kind of ease in to the.
Marv Albert
Week we learned today.
Todd Fritz
What did we learn today, Todd?
Marv Albert
Kevin Stefanski won two coach of the year awards. One time being introduced to the honorary Steve Stefanski.
Todd Fritz
Satan, what'd you learn today? Yeah, I think Steve Stefanski probably got a lot of Falcons here.
Marv Albert
Excuse me.
Dan Patrick
Browns gear.
Marv Albert
Marvin Herb White, warmup legend.
Todd Fritz
Yeah. With the Atlanta Hawks. Paul, what'd you learn today, Steve Stefanski? What did I learn, Todd?
Marv Albert
We all learned. You think the mothership might want to consider running a sh. Bottom line. On between Sunday, Friday, and sundown on Saturday.
Todd Fritz
Have a great weekend, everybody. For Fritzy Seaton, Marv Poly, yours truly, we'll talk to you from San Francisco on Monday. This is an iHeart podcast. Guaranteed Human.

This episode of The Dan Patrick Show centers on the lead-up to Super Bowl 60, diving into NFL storylines, coaching changes, Hall of Fame debate (especially regarding Bill Belichick), and an in-depth, candid conversation with Seattle Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold as he prepares for his first Super Bowl appearance. The tone is conversational, humorous, and full of insider perspective, with both sports insights and personal anecdotes.
“Lindsey Vonn posted a half an hour ago on her Instagram. She’s discussing the situation with her doctors and will undergo further exams. It’s her left knee. She said, there’s a very difficult outcome one week before the Olympics.” — Dan Patrick (04:10)
[04:29–19:23] Segment Start: 04:29 — End: 19:23
“Is Bill Belichick worthy of being a Hall of Famer? Yes or no? Don’t say that he’s eventually going to get in... His numbers are absurd... you feel silly doing it. It’s nuts that he is not a first ballot Hall of Famer, regardless of the reasons why.” — Rich Eisen (09:36)
“Kurt Warner talks about this all the time, that we always throw names out there as busts because they aren’t in the right spot...” — Rich Eisen (16:10)
“I’m full on JLo. I’m gonna get it done. I have a plan. I have a pressure plan. I got a plan.” — Rich Eisen (19:00)
[24:05–37:19] Segment Start: 24:05 – End: 37:19
Colts vs. Bears (Peyton Manning vs. Rex Grossman, 2007) sticks out, recalling a Pop Warner team party and general youthful excitement.
“I just remember having a ton of fun... all my Pop Warner football team... it was a good time.” — Sam Darnold (24:10)
Darnold had not realized he would be the first USC quarterback to play in a Super Bowl until after the NFC Championship game.
“It’s great to be able to represent the university and, you know, hopefully just represent them proudly at the game.” — Sam Darnold (25:10)
Darnold discusses the importance of routine: “I think doing some of the game plan stuff this week and really studying, doubling down on kind of what the Pats do... as if the game were to be this upcoming Sunday, you know.” — Sam Darnold (25:37)
On prepping by watching Patriots tape versus self-scouting their own games: “...being able to understand kind of what [the Patriots] are doing, especially being in a different conference and not being able to watch any New England tape throughout this entire season... is huge.” — Sam Darnold (26:30)
On unexpected texts after the NFC Title win: “Luke Combs, Kenny Chesney… you have former quarterbacks that reach out... But, yeah, I think the celebrities and the country music singers... that might surprise people.” — Sam Darnold (27:31)
Sam is asked whether he plays with a chip on his shoulder: “I don’t ever felt like I had a chip on my shoulder. I just don’t think that’s really my personality... I feel like if I got too high or if I got too low, that affected me... I was always just better if I just stayed right here, just even keeled.” — Sam Darnold (29:11)
Darnold is candid about moving past his tumultuous stints with the Jets and Panthers: “...the days in New York, the days in Carolina, like, those are part of my journey and they’re part of my experience. And I loved every single part of it. Like, yeah, there were some lows that sucked... but I learned so much from that, and, you know, I’m able to move on.” — Sam Darnold (31:32)
On the luxury of throwing to Jaxon Smith-Njigba (JSN): “He’s just a special talent... he’s very quarterback friendly... easy for me to kind of feel what he’s thinking and what he’s doing on the field and to read his body language, whether he’s going to come out of a route at full speed or... show me his numbers...” — Sam Darnold (33:35)
On JSN’s iconic catch: “I don’t know if the cameras caught my reaction... I was kind of looking at our sideline like, did that really just happen?... It should never surprise us anymore.” — Sam Darnold (35:12)
Darnold reveals his fiancée is handling most of the Super Bowl ticket requests ("Beyoncé... Katie, my fiancée", 35:46), estimating upwards of 20 tickets, and jokes about the stress it brings.
Darnold says his loved ones attending the game are the important ones and stresses enjoyment: “I want to enjoy every single moment with my teammates and these coaches and even the media... because you never know when you’re going to get back here.” — Sam Darnold (28:14, paraphrased)
[37:21–41:09]
Rich Eisen on Hall of Fame Bias:
“Is Bill Belichick worthy of being a Hall of Famer? Yes or no?... It’s nuts that he is not a first ballot Hall of Famer, regardless of the reasons why.” (09:36)
Sam Darnold on His NFL Journey:
“The days in New York, the days in Carolina, like, those were. Those are part of my journey and they're part of my experience. And I loved every single part of it. Like, yeah, there were some lows that sucked. I'm not gonna lie to you. You know, and. And that's part of it, though. Like, I learned so much from that, and you know, I'm able to move on.” (31:32)
Darnold on Preparation Mindset:
“If I think about the doubters or proving anyone wrong... I feel like I’m doing my team a disservice because I’m thinking about the wrong things.” (30:28)
On JSN’s One-Handed Catch:
“I was kind of looking at our sideline, like, did that really just happen? ...It should never surprise us anymore.” (35:12)
The episode maintains Dan Patrick's signature blend of informed analysis, offbeat humor, approachable interviews, and friendly banter between the Danettes. Darnold comes across as mature, calm, and grateful—never boastful or dramatic, instead embracing the moment.
This hour delivers:
Whether you crave gridiron insight, character studies of star athletes, or inside jokes about failed country music alter egos, this episode offers it all.
