You are listening to the Dan Patrick show on Fox Sports Radio final hour on this Tuesday. Bring your own secondhand smoke. Man, it just feels like each hour at the top of the hour somebody is sparking up here and kind of hot boxing us. Fritzi, it feels like it's affecting you a little bit. It's really strong. Are there different levels of. I don't, I don't know from these things, but it seems. Why is it getting stronger, more people are doing it or there's different levels of the potency of the product. I don't know. But I know there's somebody out in our audience who is. He brought his own and he raised his hand. I said, who's guilty? And he raised his hand yesterday and I saw him out there again today in his niner parka and like, okay, you do you here. Yes. Do they need. Is that needed to enjoy the program? Do you have to. What does that say about all of us? And you need to be at a certain level of a high to enjoy what we're trying to do. I. I don't know. It's called wake and bake. Apparently yes, it is. And apparently, apparently, yeah. Damn, that's that. Ooh my gosh. I know that is. That's sticky.
Stugatz
That's sticky.
Dan Patrick
Icky. Sticky icky. Right? He don't sell no packs of Reggie. My God, that's strong stat of the day brought to you by Panini America. The official trading cards of the program. Four days, not three, not five, four days until the Winter Olympics kickoff opening ceremony. Join the celebration on NBC and peacock, which is where you can find this award nominated program. It's a meet Tuesday. We have meet every single day on the program courtesy of Heartland steak. And we have dill crusted salmon, American pork chops, and we have Iowa pork chops. Who has it better than we do? Yes, Todd. Is that Dylan crusted salmon? Are you just abbreviating? Dylan is doing the cooking.
Seaton
That's gross.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, but thank you, Todd. What is the difference between American and Iowa pork chop?
Seaton
I'm happy you asked, Dan.
Dan Patrick
Okay. Oh, I have no idea. Poly. I thought that's in your wheelhouse. An American pork chop or an Iowa pork chop.
Paul
I am two hours into this search about the Iowa pork chop, but they said it's a thicker pork rub pork rib chop and it's almost like a porterhouse steak and it's prepared that way so it almost has a steak seasoning.
Dan Patrick
Oh, okay. Yes, Todd, I want to try that. Thank you, Todd. You guys still want me to go on stage? No, no, no. Frank Caliendo invited you. You know he wants you to be funny. It was under the guise of support, kindness, because then I just totally bomb. And whatever he does, even if it's mediocre, it's going to be fantastic. Compared to me that I'm perfect to open up for a comedian. Oh, so you think that Frank is. It's a setup set. Yeah. Setting you up to make him. I think Frank's funny. Without you. This guy sucks. We want Frank. We want Frank. That's what would happen to me if I came on before. No, it would not. Well, it might now because you're saying it.
Seaton
Hey, joke boy.
Dan Patrick
Yeah. That you might get that. Make us laugh. Joke boy. Joke boy. Stick to the guest booking. You're not funny, Seaton. What's the final hour? Poll question.
Seaton
My goodness gracious. Yeah, I have a final. I have three poll questions for you. I think Paul's got one too as well. 75% of the audience say there is an anti Patriots bias. In the hall of fame voting, 67 say there shouldn't be an anti Patriots bias. And who would you want to grab dinner with? Right now, Ross Tucker is barely edging out. Steve Young and Frank Caliendo.
Dan Patrick
Sean in Daytona Beach. Good morning, Sean. What's on your mind, Dan?
Caller
Long time. Long time. And constantly awake and bake with you guys. Thanks again for everything, and thanks for calling me back. Listen, I know that a lot of us feel that Ross is going to be the heir apparent when the Dan Patrick show retires. However, I think he proved it today, and I've been thinking about this over a few weeks now. Don't you think CBS should consider less Romo, more Ross, less Tony, more Tucker? He's great as an analyst and actually covers the game well.
Dan Patrick
Well, Tony Romo's got a contract, and I don't think they're moving on from Tony. Probably, what, three or four years on that contract, and I don't think they're moving on. You know, he was the flavor of the month, and then all the other networks, hey, we got to get a Tony Romo kind of guy. Guy who makes predictions. Well, a lot of these analysts do make predictions. Herbie or Collinsworth, who joins us tomorrow. But it's not in a as overt way as Tony does. And Tony did it in a really entertaining way. And we liked it. But we like it when you're right. When you're not, then it's like, is he studying? Is he doing his homework? Does he know the players? When he'll, you know, say, hey, Jim, I don't know what they're gonna do, and then, you know, Jim calls the play, then it feels like, you know, is he kind of losing touch with what he's supposed to be doing in these games? But when he first started, he was on fire with predictions. I think Tom Brady has done a really good job and making predictions, telling you what to expect. But also, I marvel in when. When you're going to recap what you just saw. And I think Herb street might be the best at doing this. He'll say, this is what they just did. And so it's right after the play. And then he'll break down what just happened. And, you know, that that is a real talent that he has. But, you know, we're very lucky. Collinsworth is great. I mean, there's so many of these guys who are great. I. And even when I talked to Tony Dungy and Rodney Harrison, when I was doing Football Night in America, I said, the further you get away from the game and the players that you coached or played against or played with, the tougher it's going to be. Because now you have to. You have to do your homework. You have to. These are guys that you don't know, but you have to find out. And I think that's what Tony, if I would have advised him A couple of years ago, I'd say you gotta reinvest, learn the game, learn the players, because it's ever changing. And I don't like when I hear, you know, the number of somebody. I want to hear the name of somebody. Are we gonna have a final hour poll question? Seaton. Are you just gonna carry these over?
Steve Young
Yeah.
Seaton
No, I think Paul has a Steve Young poll question he's been noodling.
Paul
Okay.
Dan Patrick
Okay.
Paul
I've been thinking about this a lot. I think Steve Young is probably of the more underrated quarterbacks and players in NFL history. While being a first ballot hall of Famer, he did all his work in his 30s, all of it in his 20s. He was either on Tampa or a backup with the Niners. Can you think of another athlete that became a first ballot hall of Famer if you took away his 20s? Now, Brady had both. He had the 20s and the 30s and a little 40s. Kurt Warner kind of got running at 28, 29, but he had an MVP before 30. So I just think his career is such an anomaly that all his work was done after age 30. And I don't know if there's anyone else like that.
Dan Patrick
Roger Staubach comes close because of the military commitment, but I think he might have been 29 when he won his first Super Bowl.
Paul
Yeah, you're right. And that's really close. I would say Staubach's the closest.
Dan Patrick
Yeah.
Paul
But it's such an anomaly because, you know, most guys, if they don't make it in their 20s, they don't get their 30s.
Dan Patrick
I was also wondering about this with Clint Kubak. He is going to be the next Raiders head coach and the perception is reality. He did a great job with Seattle this year. They averaged over 29 points per game. And now he's going to go to the Raiders. So the Raiders are going to get Fernando Mendoza and Clint Kubiak. So this seems like, although I don't like first year coach, first year quarterback, but, you know, there's a lot of momentum going into the draft for the Raiders, but this is if they get shut down by New England's defense. Like the perception of this is maybe the Raiders are getting this right. You get a good offensive minded guy, a young guy pairing with the Heisman Trophy winner. You got Ashton Genty, Brock Bowers, maybe you got something here, some momentum here. I just hope that the one game isn't sort of a referendum one way or another on Clint Kubiak. He did a great job over the course of a season. And to me, that's when you're going to play some of these opponents twice. People get a big book on you of what you do, how you do it. You're going to do it with Sam Darnold. You have a couple of, you know, game breakers as well. But it felt like it was very quiet, subdued with what he did. Just like Mike McDonald's. I mean, they quietly had one of the great coaching years in recent memory, when you think about it. Defense was great, offense one of the best in the NFL. And now he's going to go to the Raiders. But, you know, it might be one of those situations where you go, they got blown out. Well, that defense shut down the offense here and that. Yeah, I mean, it's going to be a referendum on Sam Darnold first and foremost. And then, you know, it'll be with Clint Kubiak on there as well. Roger Goodell met with the media yesterday and he talked. I mean, he touched on everything. I watched. I watched it and I knew that he wasn't going to say anything. But then he doesn't have to. I mean, it's best to not make any headlines out of that press conference. And he did a really good job of that. He did talk about the 18 game schedule. And is it on the horizon?
Roger Goodell
We have not had any formal discussions about it and frankly, very little of any informal conversations. I've heard people talk about it in the context. It is not a given that we'll do that. It is not something that we assume will happen. It is something that we want to talk about with the union leadership. As you know, they're going through a transition and hopefully that will get solidified this spring. And as they determine their priorities, we are doing the same on the ownership level so that when we get together, we can address these issues together.
Dan Patrick
Okay. I mean, you didn't really say anything. Do I think they've had private talks? Yes, I do. The Players Association, I know, has had private talks about this, but it does seem like a foregone conclusion that we'll get to 18 games. He also talked about the referees and their performances.
Roger Goodell
I'm so amazed at how good our officials are. I mean, you know, we spend time all week looking at various angles and still debating it a week later. These guys have to make a split second decision. And the men and women on our field are incredible. And I think that they've proven over and over again they're. They're really wonderful at what they do. On the other hand, it's a difficult Sport to officiate. It's fast, it's quick, and we have to be able to use technology, in my view, to try to prevent the obvious errors.
Dan Patrick
Okay. I don't know if anybody asked him about transparency of when you're doing reviews. Can we find out what is being said in those reviews? Can we have, you know, something in the home office there, the control tower, just a little bit more? Given the fact that the amount of money that's betting, billions of dollars will be bet on this super bowl, we should be able to get some kind of snippet. I would think that even after the fact, it doesn't have to be in the moment live, but bring it back and say, this is how they came to this conclusion. I think we're getting to that point. I think we're owed it as a fan base. And the importance of gambling on getting a call. Right. I think having the eye in the sky is really important, but, you know, we just want to make sure that you have. And they do an incredible job. They do, but there are times when they don't, and it feels like somebody can help them get the right call, because that's the bottom line. I don't care if you're embarrassed that you, you know, you missed the call and you made a bad call. I want to make sure that we correct it, because then it does. Doesn't exacerbate it. Your feelings might be hurt because you missed a call. Okay, but we got to get the call right. You know, the Denver game against Buffalo, if they got it right, great. They got it right. If they didn't and they had to reverse it, I don't think we're remembering who was the, you know, referee who made the call. It's. We're going to remember you if you don't get the call right.
Paul
Yeah, Paulie, yeah, I think you're right. But some side of the call is going to be unsatisfied. But no one can say, we don't know what you were thinking if you show the discussion. And it opens up a whole different level of entertainment. Can you imagine, let's go live to sky booth or whatever you call it, and they're discussing that play. I mean, everyone would just shut up and listen.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, I mean, that's obvious. But we want to. We want to be in behind the curtain there. And if there's times when they get under the hood and you're like, why are they taking so long? I would love to hear why they're taking so long. Hey, stall a Little bit. We got one more replay. We want to bring you. Oh, okay. It's getting the call. Right. And, you know, this experience now with, you know, all these leagues bring you closer, give us. Give us more access. We want to hear everything. We want to be closer to the action. I think that this, you know, I go back to the hall of Fame voting. I would love for that to be transparent, that if you. If you have the honor and you're going to argue for somebody or you're going to. Are you against somebody? I know you don't want to have your name attached to it. So then you have a fan base who is out to get you. I understand. And I would certainly want to protect the safety of those who vote. But I would love to know about Belichick and Robert Kraft and the coincidence, if it is, that both aren't getting into the hall of Fame. And if you say to me, hey, these three guys, these. These three players are going to get in, and Belichick and Kraft didn't get in, why didn't you vote for them? And is it as simple as we wanted these guys to get in? Then at least I know what, you know, your PowerPoint, your parameters were of who you voted for and who you didn't vote. And I think that's the gray area. And do I think it makes the hall of Fame look bad? It doesn't. I think we're talking about it. Maybe we make. You have to have one of these moments to have change. If somebody said, hey, you know what we should do? And then they might just say, no, we'll keep it as is. From what I was told by one of the voters, they thought about changing the system this year, and they waited. And as he told me last Wednesday, we should have changed it this year because now we're all guilty. Now everybody wants. Did you vote for, you know, Belichick, Brady? And you had a couple of guys who were in the room, from what I'm told, who assumed that Brady or that Belichick and Kraft were getting into the hall of Fame. It was a foregone conclusion. They didn't even think about it. Like, there were people who didn't speak up because they thought, let's focus on these three players, Roger Craig, Elsie Greenwood and Kenny Anderson. Not, I mean, who's arguing, you know, against Brady or Belichick and Kraft. And then as my source said, once they said, is he going to coach again? What was his record without Tom and Spygate? And then my source said, that's the first time I realized that Belichick might not get in on the first ballot. So the the room temperature changed, according to my source, because it was about an hour long discussion for Belichick. All right, we'll take a break. Steve Young will join us next. We'll get to more phone calls as well and we'll run down the guest list for the next three days here from San Francisco. We're back after this on the Dan Patrick Show. Be sure to catch the live edition of the Dan Patrick show, weekdays at 9am Eastern, 6am Pacific on Fox Sports Radio in the iHeartRadio app.

Breaking news, Lindsay Vaugh tore her ACL in a crash Friday. Last Friday in a World cup race in Switzerland, but she says she's still going to try to compete at the Olympics. At age 41, she is in her second year of a comeback after a five year retirement. Steve Young stopped by yesterday after the show, got a chance to talk to him. And one of my favorite interviews, and I think he's the best NFL analyst out there. He joined us on behalf of Sutter Health, a new partnership with Steve and the Forever Young foundation, which he will talk about. And he came in on fire because he saw Mario and some of the backroom guys had DP show gear. And he started on right away, asking me about, why doesn't he have DP show swag?
Steve Young
No, look, Dan, you don't understand. Like it says, the Dan Patrick show has a cool thing of you. The desk.
Dan Patrick
Yeah.
Steve Young
And so for me, I've been around a long time.
Dan Patrick
Yeah.
Steve Young
Like, there's a connection. I don't know if you feel it, but I feel connected to the show. And so it's like, I don't want your jacket because I need another jacket. I want it to say the Dan Patrick Show. And then I go down to the creamery or I pick the kids up at school. People are like, dude, school, dude's cool.
Dan Patrick
Okay, we'll work on that. Well, it's great to see you.
Steve Young
It's good to see you too, in person. I love it.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, you look healthy. You look like, give me a couple plays.
Steve Young
Couple.
Dan Patrick
Yeah.
Steve Young
Yeah. I always said Hunger Games, if they said do it or die, I could run the screen game. I could. I could do something.
Dan Patrick
But isn't that all they do now is run the little checkdowns?
Steve Young
Don't get me started. Don't get me started.
Dan Patrick
Because.
Steve Young
And I always say this about, you know, because older players always think, oh, we had it so hard, or we have so tough. And I. But there are fundamental differences. One that the quarterbacks can rub the footballs and get all this preservative off of it and get all the slickness stuff out of the first quarter of the games that we'd play. Our hand would be orange from all the preservative off the ball because they wouldn't let us touch it. And it was slick. And then. And now they can. So that's a big change.
Dan Patrick
Okay, but why shouldn't you be able to manipulate the football?
Steve Young
Talk to Paul Tagu. For 15 years, Dan Marino, myself, John Elway, Troy Aikman. We would all just like, please let us get the crap off the footballs and let me, you know, all Competition, fairness. Finally, Roger Goodell gets his spot, and Tom and Peyton go to him in 2006 and go, look, bro, we got to end this. This is madness that quarterbacks have to worry about grabbing the football.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, but Tom screwed it up by then.
Steve Young
Okay. No, your brain likes to jump ahead, which I appreciate. Just appreciate that that change was an amazing part of the change. And then, of course, Tom men have gone a little bit further, but even.
Dan Patrick
Then, it's your football for your team. I don't care what you do.
Steve Young
I agree with you. And I think we'd all, as quarterbacks, we'd all say, look, it is not unfair to throw a football that you want to throw. You know, if you want to dribble a flat basketball, feel free. If you want to dribble, can't do it because both teams touch it. But. But you get the idea. Like, make it so you can rip it. And so the. The balls that they play with today, footballs, they play with today on the sidelines on Monday nights. And I'm there, and I go, hey, let me. Let me grab one of them. Honestly, I have a visceral reaction. I like. I grab it. I'm like, oh, Troy was the one. He and I, buddies, like, he's a. We talked about it a lot, you know, and it's like, you're telling me you can go out there and throw this thing now. Not only the rule changes, but I'm just telling you, that change for quarterbacks, it's just. I would. I would love to go back. What I could have been.
Dan Patrick
Yeah. What's your criteria for hall of Fame quarterbacks?
Steve Young
I don't know. That's a hard one.
Dan Patrick
You don't have a standard.
Steve Young
No, because I think there's so much context to it, and because they'll always weight the things that quarterbacks can't control completely. That Super Bowls team win, you know, like, and. And football is such a team game. I always say football quarterbacks need a lot of help to get there. And so a lot of times you get a Hall of Fame quarterback with a Hall of Fame receiver or hall of Fame coach. It's like, a lot of times that happens because that's how it needs to happen. In a way, the criteria is. Is very bespoke for folks. And I don't, you know, and I think there's even conversations around first ballot versus second ballot and third ballot. And you know how they think about it. They're very serious about it. I'll tell you that. You might not agree with Them, but they're super serious about it. I think the feeling is the criteria. I mean, it's already hard to play NFL football. I mean, you can play great NFL football for a long time. I tip my cap to anyone who can do it.
Dan Patrick
But would you have voted for Belichick?
Roger Goodell
Yeah.
Steve Young
I mean, Bill Belichick had two hall of Fame careers. Yeah, you could take one of them. Oh, Spygate or something else. We're gonna put him off of here. Like, we're gonna. But he's got a whole other hall of Fame career that he's in on. Like, in other words, he's got two or three hall of Fame careers in a way. And so I just. I feel like. Yeah, I mean, are they gonna do that? I also. I also feel like if. If you think about Spygate as a big mistake. Okay, put it away. And then what do you do? And he goes and wins three more Super Bowls. So, I mean, he makes it on kind of any criteria you can come up with.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, but if they're going to hold it against him now, are they going to hold it against him next? Like, what's the difference? You still cheated. We're holding this against you. Unless it's just a one year. We're going to show you amongst.
Steve Young
Amongst the hall of Fame family. I think there is a feeling around first ballot. I think it's meaningful. It's something that's, you know, says something. And I think there might be people that have voted that say, look, I'll do it, but not the first one.
Dan Patrick
What do you think of what Dion said of first ballot? Hall of Famers get a different shade of gold with their jacket, or maybe you get medals.
Steve Young
It's already what it is like. And the thing with football is you. You really do stand on the shoulders of a lot of people. And so football's built to kind of. You have to come together. 50 guys have to lose themselves in a way to come together. And so if you're kind of distinguished, you're. You're being distinguished amongst a big group. And so the idea that I want more distinguishment, like, I'm on. I'm special, special, special. It, like, it becomes, at some point, it's antithetical to the. To the sport. In a way. It's. I think we got to be careful just because there are, you know, excellence is excellence, but, you know, it still is football. We stand on the backs of a.
Dan Patrick
Lot of people who was more athletic or maybe. I don't want to say took your breath.
Steve Young
Here we go. In the bar now. Okay. What do you. We're going to go to a fight.
Dan Patrick
Why. Why are you so irascible today?
Steve Young
Because I know where you're going. Go. What's next?
Dan Patrick
No, you tell me what I'm. You know, somebody who was really athletic and kind of made you go, wow.
Stugatz
Oh.
Dan Patrick
If I said, oh, okay. Yeah. Now, the journalist showed up here. Gonna ask a question now. Bo Jackson or Dion Sanders?
Steve Young
Well, again, the appreciation as an art form. You'd have to appreciate them in their uniqueness and context, because they're not one to one. I mean, Dion had speed that was faster than any human I've ever. Now, like, I'm sure there's Olympic sprinters, but on a football field with a helmet on, which is very different, there was speed that I had to. For a little while, I couldn't throw to him at him, because he would do things that belied my eye. You play NFL quarterback, you. You get a keen sense of what an athlete can do, what a defender can do, and you know how to. You've seen the throws in slow motion when it just misses the fingertips and. But we get really good at it. And when somebody is out, like, outer space, able to do things that don't make sense to your eye, you got to take a minute. And that's what I did with him. I was like, I'm going to take some time with him because I can't gauge what he's doing. It defies my eye. And he's the one guy that I can say that did that. Now, Bo, I mean, honestly, when I've been with elite athletes in different sports, when we gather, there's certain things that come together, whether it's ESPYs or. You know, there's places where it happens. When Bo walks in, everybody. Everybody kind of. It's. You can just feel it. Bo is in a unique class of athletes that makes people just go, I don't. And Bo's a good friend, so. I mean, you talk about irascible. My man Bo. Do not get in his way. Funny, funny dude, and I love him, but. Yeah, yeah, he's all that. But as far as the two of them, they're. They're amazing, but they're different because Bo could do the. The power. The. You watch his first at bat when he grounds the second and beats it out. Then he hits two home runs like he. With a. He breaks the bat over his. You know, like, just.
Dan Patrick
It was.
Steve Young
Both of them are a little worldly. You'd want Bo for all the power and, and, and, and Dion for the speed.
Dan Patrick
Bo's coming by a couple of days.
Steve Young
Tell him hello. He's a great friend. I hope he says that. Steve Young pisses me off.
Dan Patrick
He's the super bowl champion quarterback for the NERS hall of Famer. Joining us on behalf of half of Forever Young Foundation.
Steve Young
That's me. Yeah.
Dan Patrick
Yeah. What are you doing?
Steve Young
Well, Sutter Health in the Bay Area, I'm always about prevention. My wife is very health conscious and we're. And our health care model is kind of break fix. Like, hey, when you're sick, we got something for you, but how do we keep you from getting sick? And so Sutter Health has come to me and said, we want this next generation of kids. We want prevention. We want to get them out. We want to get them off their phone. We want to get them out. And because I'm a flag football guru now, you didn't know that, especially for girls, we've got a real effort to develop flag girls, flag football in the Bay Area, and that's what we're doing. And Sutter Health, I mean, I'm pitching them because they're doing good stuff in the community, and I like that and I really appreciate them. We've already had. We had one on Saturday, a cool girls flag football camp. And the girls, when they understand the game at its core, at its root is timing, tactics and detail, they're like, oh, I get that now. Where boys are like, I get that maybe tomorrow, maybe the next day. And so in that way, I can't wait for girls to play flag because every time they are exposed to it again, I use the word visceral. They feel the game, they feel what it's about, and they can't wait to play it. And so I'm all about getting that opportunity. I appreciate Sutter getting in the middle of with me. They have the more power. I'm one guy. They have a lot of power to make that happen. So I'm excited about it.
Dan Patrick
When did the Pro bowl lose its luster?
Steve Young
The Pro bowl lost its luster when I took the biggest beatings I've ever taken in my football career were at the Pro Bowl. Now you laugh because that makes no sense. Why would the biggest beating. Because nobody's. You're playing with the elite players in the NFL and everyone's out on the beach all week and no one really knows the plays. And now Reggie White doesn't drink. You know what I mean? Reggie White is not hungover. And now it's like. Or Bruce Smith or name it, you know what I mean? And so there are Pro Bowls. When I look back and I'm like, this is not right. This is not. I just finished the super bowl and now I'm going to the Pro Bowl. And I love being in Hawaii, but I'm not gonna take a beating. So it was irrational and it wasn't. It couldn't be sustained because it's. Who's gonna go do that and take that risk? And so. But because Flag is becoming so big, Dan, I think what's happening is Flag was an answer that was kind of a, I don't know, cheap answer to the Pro Bowl. I told the guys that, you know, I'm coaching with Jerry, I. I pulled him aside and said, look, tomorrow when we play, you're representing the fastest growing sport in the world. People are playing it because it's accessible and it's unique. And if you guys play like, it's just a, you know, football light. Football, football light. It's not. It's not the truth. Flag has its own world now, and it's elite. And I could tell you, if we got an elite men's team to play those guys tomorrow, I think that elite men's team.
Dan Patrick
Oh, I agree. I agree.
Steve Young
So it's like getting them and that you could see their eyes light up. They're like, you're right. We got to make sure that. So I have two 45 minute sessions yesterday and today to get them ready to go break, play elite Flag football. But I think the Pro bowl, if we, if we'll keep playing Flag, I think it'll become something that they could start to embrace themselves and not just be like, ah, Pro bowl is a joke.
Dan Patrick
You know, how does life change for Sam Darnold if he wins the Super Bowl?
Steve Young
It's already changed. It's changed in a way that he has redefined his career. He's redefined who he is, how he plays in big games. Those are all important now.
Dan Patrick
But it changed your life, too.
Steve Young
The super bowl now can be the thing that you can, I don't know, in some ways, you're a made man right now. You're in a place where you're going for two, which is just a different world. And so for Sam Darnold, this is huge. And I think playing well because it is the biggest game. And Sam was fighting we all. Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, myself. Damn, it doesn't matter where you start. There's all years of filters and hurdles, and every time you jump one, they're like, well, what about this. Oh, well, he hasn't done that. And so you just spend your whole career trying to just run everything over. And so Sam's had to do the same thing, but further away because he started with the Jets. That's brutal. He went to Carolina when it was a bad spot for quarterbacks. Got to Kyle Shanahan, saw the sun come out. Now we're going to see who is Sam Darnold? Is he really that good? And if he plays well in the Super Bowl, I think that not only redefines his career, because he's already done that. I think it puts him in Elite State. And now next 10 years, does he win two? I mean, Sam Darnold could be the guy. And I think that's kind of cool for him.
Dan Patrick
He'd be on scholarship. But I look at Drake maybe like I do. Dan Marino was like, okay.
Steve Young
Young. Yeah.
Dan Patrick
You know, if he doesn't get it, he'll be back. How'd that go for Dan and Joe Burrow? I mean, I. I just say it. Don't ever subscribe to that philosophy.
Steve Young
Yeah, one of the most painful.
Dan Patrick
Danny has to every time he comes on these shows.
Steve Young
It's brutal. I mean, we went. We in the suit. We went to the hall of Fame together. And so we did a lot of interviews together. And inevitably someone would go to Dan. Well, you didn't win a Super Bowl. You could see Dan, you know, it just is, you know, and you're like, of all the things that this guy did, and now he has to just drag that around.
Dan Patrick
But you didn't wear your super bowl rings when you were with him, did you? You did not. Okay, like, put your hand on the desk and, you know, like, really loud clanging.
Steve Young
You gotta remember, Dan and I met the first time.
Dan Patrick
I remember you telling.
Steve Young
You got that story.
Seaton
Okay.
Steve Young
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
Well, no, you saw him play at Army. At army, and you're thinking, oh, my God, we played the same position.
Steve Young
He's throwing the ball differently than me.
Dan Patrick
It's great to see you, Daniel. I'll get you some swag.
Steve Young
No, I don't. I'm just wonder. Just a jack. Just like.
Dan Patrick
I mean, I'd love.
Steve Young
But I want the whole thing, you.
Dan Patrick
Know, the I'd love to, you know, walk around in Steve Young jersey, but nobody. Or put it in my man cave.
Steve Young
But Forever Young found it. We got to make the Forever Young.
Dan Patrick
Nobody offered that, Steve.
Steve Young
Well, we don't have that. We got to work on that.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, that'd be nice. I could put it up there. I got all the great quarterbacks in my man cave.
Steve Young
It's a lot easier to talk to you when it's not 7am why? I'm a little more alert. Maybe too alert. That might be a problem. Maybe 7 inch better.
Dan Patrick
I like you when you're dumbed down a little bit. I can take advantage of you watered down. Thanks for joining us as always. Thank you. Steve Young, one of my favorites. Stopped by yesterday. Steve Young
Oh, no.
Paul
We have an incident.
Dan Patrick
We had a scramble.
Paul
The jets coming for those on radio.
Dan Patrick
We had a malfunction here.
Seaton
A little too rough with your stand there, Daniel?
Dan Patrick
Yeah, yeah, you know what?
Seaton
You're set. You can do whatever you want. Yeah, you want to trash the place, you go ahead.
Dan Patrick
On Friday. I'm trashing this place like Zeppelin leaving a hotel room.
Seaton
You're just gonna start knocking stuff over.
Dan Patrick
I don't know if I could ever get to the point point where if I was in a rock and roll band that for like to entertain me, I got to throw a TV out of a window or just trash the place.
Paul
It feels like it's a rite of passage. Oh, you're supposed to do that when you make it as a young rock star.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, but I don't know why I would do it like, go, okay, hey, let's trash this place and then pay for it.
Seaton
There was a Pearl Jam had a drummer named, like, Dave Averies, I think his name was. And he. I think he was the drummer, like, when they broke, you know, like that 10 era, even flow and Jeremy and all that. And he. They later kicked him out of the band, I think, and replaced him. Yeah, they're like, what's going on? Like, why did that happen? He's like, I don't know. Like, I was kind of living a rock star lifestyle. I was doing all the things that rock stars did, and everybody else in the band was like, you know, we don't really do that. That's not really what we're about. Or he's like, what was the point of doing this if we're not going.
Dan Patrick
To do all the things?
Seaton
And, yeah, I think he got kicked to the curb because he was living the life. And everybody else kind of like, wow, we don't need to do that.
Dan Patrick
Mike Tirico, Chris Collinsworth on the program tomorrow. Robert Griffin Jr. III, Will Anderson Jr. Dan Arlovsky will stop by as well. A couple of phone calls in here before we exit stage left. John in Iowa. Hi, John.
Caller
Hey, boys. How y' all doing?
Dan Patrick
Great.
Caller
Talking about the Iowa chops. I moved to Iowa about 20 some years ago and never heard of them, so I discovered them the first time I cooked them. Like, when you eat an Iowa chop, you can't go back to a regular chop. They're so good, and you have to eat the fat to make it even better. But another thing, Dan, I used to listen to you on 96 Rock in Atlanta when I was in high school.
Dan Patrick
Yeah.
Caller
And that's kind of. Kind of giving you guys what my age is here. But yours too, Dan.
Dan Patrick
Thank. Thank you, John.
Seaton
You know what they say, Once you.
Dan Patrick
Go Iowa, you never go, never come back.
Seaton
Vacua.
Roger Goodell
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
Yes, Marvin.
Steve Young
He sounded like me talking to Debo.
Dan Patrick
Yeah. And then yes, Paulie.
Paul
But I did love his intensity. Talking about it was like. It's like a professional, like Morgan Freeman saying about pork chops.
Dan Patrick
He really got excited about that.
Paul
I like it.
Dan Patrick
Camille in Houston, or is Camille don't like it, as Todd likes to say. Hugh Town. Hi, Camille. Hi.
Caller
My voice is not that deep. The last caller was amazing. I just want to. Wanted to wish my husband a happy 55th birthday.
Dan Patrick
He didn't stop. What? Camille, what is your husband's name?
Caller
His name's Mike. We love you guys.
Dan Patrick
How about we ready? One, two, three. Happy birthday, Camille. Yes. She's a good kisser.
Seaton
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
Caller
He does say, we, we can't call, we can't watch you before we get home from work because we both work. And he'll say, did you cheat on me with Dan? And I'm like, no, I didn't. I didn't watch the show. So today I had to cheat on him with you because I had to call in, so.
Dan Patrick
All right, Camille.
Stugatz
All past Danny.
Dan Patrick
All right. Happy birthday to Mike. Of course, Camille. Thank you for calling. Yeah, Mike's away. Dan will play Rick in Indiana. Hi, Rick. What's on your mind today?
Caller
Top of the morning, fellas. And that's hard to follow that one. But I was calling in about the Denver and Buffalo game and the reception that was called an interception. And watching that play back, the offensive player and the defensive player both had possession of the ball when they went to the ground. And if ties go to the receiver, I don't understand how they call that an interception. It would not be called a fumble if it happened with somebody tackling a running back. And just wanted to get your opinion on that.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, we kind of went over that a while ago and I. In real time, I thought it was a reception. And then once they replayed it, I thought it was an interception. You know, it's. It's tricky. And then Sean McDermott, I mean, you think about it, he lost his job. If they make the catch, is Sean McDermott still the head coach of the Buffalo Bills? They might be playing this weekend. When you think about it, everything that's attached to it. Nate in Virginia. Nate, thank you for holding.
Caller
Second time, long time. 6ft, 185. I'll be frank as well, guys. I don't smoke anymore, but I don't smoke any less. And as a hopeful Seattle fan, this weekend isn't easy for me here. So they say hills all. And that's all fine and dandy like cotton candy. But I would like to put this out here and I want to sign my buddy, Beast Mode, Marshawn lynch to a one day deal. Let's get on the two yard line and let's make this right.
Dan Patrick
Thank you for the phone call, Nate. By the way, opening night with the Giants here at Oracle park will be the Yankees and the Giants and opening night, March 25th. And they're starting early. So that's opening night for the Giants. Also, Jeff Kent is being inducted into the Baseball hall of Fame and they'll be at Oracle Park Saturday, August 29, and they'll have a pre game ceremony and retiring his jersey. Also, the first 21,000 fans receive a Hall of Fame replica ring as the Giants take on the Diamondback. So again, our thanks to the Giants for their hospitality this week as we're at the China Basin park, if you'd like to join us. My thanks once again to a wonderful audience who came out. It's sneaky, sneaky breezy here today. A little chillier than we thought it was going to be, but thank you for maintaining. Todd what you learned today? Ross Tucker's okay just being the former Princeton guy who occasionally fills in for Dan Patrick Seon what you learn?
Seaton
Get Steve Young some merch.

Steve shares personal stories, strong opinions, and characteristic humor while also discussing his work with Sutter Health and the Forever Young Foundation. The hour wraps with typical show banter and audience calls.

On Belichick’s Hall of Fame Candidacy:
“Bill Belichick had two Hall of Fame careers.” (24:40)

Steve’s Swag Lament:
“I want it to say The Dan Patrick Show… I feel connected to the show!” (20:44)
This episode blends classic Dan Patrick wit, audience interactivity, and an insightful, freewheeling interview with Steve Young. Key takeaways include the shifting landscape of the NFL—on the field (easier for QBs today), in the broadcast booth (pressure to stay relevant), and in the halls of history (calls for transparency and reconsideration of what honors mean). Steve Young stands out for his candor, historical insight, and enduring passion for growing football at all levels.
