We are not just celebrating, we're fighting back. I'm George M. Johnson, author of the most banned book in America. On my podcast, Fighting Words, I sit down with voices that spark resistance and inspire change.
Todd Fritz
This year we are showing up and showing up. You need people being like, no, you're not what? You tell us what to do. This regime is coming down on us.

I know a lot of cops and they get asked all the time, have you ever had to shoot your gun? Sometimes the answer is yes. But there's a company dedicated to a future where the answer will always be no. And this is season two of the war on drugs podcast.
Todd Fritz
Last year, a lot of the problems of the drug. This year, a lot of the biggest names in music and sports. This kind of star studded a little bit, man. We met them at their homes, we met them at the recording studios. Stories matter, and it brings a face to them. It makes it real.
Dan Patrick
It really does.
Todd Fritz
It makes it real. Listen to new episodes of the war on Drugs Podcast Season 2 on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. You are listening to the Dan Patrick.
Dan Patrick
Show on fox sports radio. Final hour in this Thursday Dan and the Danettes, Dan Patrick show. Starting lineup, it doesn't change. It's Fritzy Seaton, Marv Poly, and yours truly are starting five. I don't know, maybe we lack a little star power there. Are we kind of like the pacers, maybe?
Todd Fritz
No. What's the comp here?
Dan Patrick
Maybe okc maybe that would make me Shea Gilgis.
Todd Fritz
You've been doing it way longer, though.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, maybe. You know, we're lacking star power, too. People complaining that there's no stars in the NBA Finals. Here's LeBron James talking about that.
Todd Fritz
We praise a lot of individuals, and rightfully so. We have unbelievable individuals in our sport over the years have done great things and have put themselves in position to be talked about. I get it.
Dan Patrick
But one thing we cannot disrespect is great teams.
Todd Fritz
You know, we have this Indiana OKC situation, and these are two great teams. And if you are a basketball fan and you really love our game and you can learn so much from watching the way those both of those teams play.
Dan Patrick
All right, I like the support there with lebron on his podcast. The U. S. Open is underway. Beautiful day in Pittsburgh. Outside of Pittsburgh. Oh, country club. Pretty good scores today so far. The U. S. Open. It's today through the weekend on USA NBC. And peacock, good morning. If you're watching on peacock, that's our streaming partner. Download the app if you haven't done so. Hall of fame golfer Ernie Else, who won it? Oakmont. He will join us coming up in a little bit. But the pacers over the Thunder, they're up 2:1 Friday night. Game four must win game four OKC because the team that wins game three in the last 25 years. They go on to win the NBA championship 80% of the time. You got a must, must win situation for OKC. And they're favored by six in Indiana. Coming up. 8 7, 7, 3, DP show email address dp danpatrick.com Twitter handle @tp show we stumbled on to something based off of the lack of star power in the NBA Finals, which I'm not lamenting, by the way. I couldn't care. I'm just, I watch. I couldn't care less. Would I love to have, you know, the Lakers in there against the Boston Celtics or, you know, throw out the matchup that has star power? Yes. But we don't have it. So it's either we don't have it, I can whine about it, or we don't have it and I can watch what we do have because somebody's going to win a championship here who's never won a championship before the US Open. Scotty Scheffler said he had to delete his Venmo account because he says that he hears from fans and he had to get rid of his Venmo account because he was either getting paid by people who won bets because of him or people were asking him for money when he didn't win. He said it wasn't a good feeling. He said, I didn't want your money and I didn't want you angry that I didn't win a bet for you. That's the downside to gambling. Not to get up on my soapbox. But now the access and it's commonplace to bet and the proximity that fans have to players to be able to say something, contact them, and all of a sudden Venmo is being brought into the picture here. He said he had to delete that. By the way, if you're looking to get more out of your car wash, try McGuire's. It's spelled M E G U I A R S McGuire's new Hybrid Hybrid ceramic wash and wax boost protection, Extreme water beating technology and next time you wash your car truck, Meguiar's reflect your passion poll question for the final hour of the program is going to be what? Well, this is one we stumbled on.
Todd Fritz
After we stumbled on the topic that we stumbled upon.
Dan Patrick
But the movie Clerks is good, great or just okay because we're talking about great movies that didn't have star power.
Todd Fritz
Yes.
Dan Patrick
At least at the time that the movie was filmed. Napoleon Dynamite might be a one seat because that was a great movie, but there's no star power at all. And even after the fact, there's no star power where you look back and you go, man, he was Napoleon Dynamite. And, you know, I don't even think the reviews were very good at the time with Napoleon Dynamite because it is quirky, but I thought it just. The dance scene in the end is. Is worthy to tune in for that. Yeah, it's the best. And he's got his boots on. I'll do what I feel like. Gosh. Yes.
Todd Fritz
Paulie, if you go back to the website. Rotten Tomatoes. That collectively takes all the reviews.
Dan Patrick
Yeah.
Todd Fritz
Rotten Tomatoes. It was positive reviews, 72%.
Dan Patrick
Okay.
Todd Fritz
For Napoleon Dynamite. Awkward, but fun. Was the synopsis.
Dan Patrick
Okay.
Todd Fritz
Clerks got 92% positive reviews when it came out.
Dan Patrick
Yeah.
Todd Fritz
That's wild.
Dan Patrick
I liked it. I didn't love it. Diner is another movie that had star power after that movie because they had, like, Mickey Rourke used to be a big thing. He was a big deal pope of Greenwich Village. Mickey Rourke was a star. Kevin Bacon was in that movie, became a star. Paul Reiser was in there as well. Steve Gutenberg was in there. Ellen Barkin was in that movie. So you had actors who became stars after the fact. Fast and Furious. Great movie. Didn't have, you know, necessarily, you know, nobody knew. Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, a little bit. Jordana Brewster. Yes. Marvin.
Todd Fritz
Are we just going box office hits with no stars? Just great movies with no stars.
Dan Patrick
See, I would rather go great movies because Fast and Furious, while I loved it and I don't think I've missed any of the ten. Even the Tokyo.
Todd Fritz
Tokyo Drift.
Dan Patrick
Yes.
Todd Fritz
Nice.
Dan Patrick
I think it's got to be what is considered a great movie. Great movie.
Todd Fritz
Well, Fast and Furious, the first one, is a fun movie. It's a fun watch.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, but it's not a great movie.
Todd Fritz
Correct.
Dan Patrick
Yeah. There's a, like, Fast Times at Ridgemont High didn't have star power, but. But was a great movie, I think. Right. Would we say Fast Times, great movie.
Todd Fritz
No doubt.
Dan Patrick
Okay. Yes.
Todd Fritz
Todd, if you make almost a dozen of something, wouldn't you think that at least one of them has to be great? I know. Not necessarily, but the odds would be in your favor that one of those 10. Does anyone think any of those 10 fast and fierce movies could be considered great?
Dan Patrick
No.
Todd Fritz
Just churning out stuff because it makes money.
Dan Patrick
Yeah. Made a lot of money. A lot of money. Rocky is probably the number one seed because it won it. It won the Academy Award. Nobody knew who Rocky was. Sylvester Stallone, Talia Shire, Burt Young. Burgess Meredith might have been more well known because wasn't He. The Penguin.
Todd Fritz
Yes, he was Batman.
Dan Patrick
Yeah. And Batman. But other than that, I don't. It. That was one of those movies where once somebody watched it, that person couldn't stop talking about the movie. And I remember a woman I worked with in radio at the University of Dayton, she's like, you got to go see it. Like you got to go see it now. I said, It's 9:30 at night. Well, if you can go see it, you should go see it now. I said, I'll wait till this weekend. Okay. Might be too late, I'm gone. But it, that was one of those movies where you go boy. And. And he held on to that script because they, they were like, we'll do this movie but you're not going to be the star. He's like, nope. Then I'm not. Ye. Yes.
Todd Fritz
Rotten Tomatoes has all 10 Fast and Furious movies ranked. And the first one, the original is right in the middle at 55 positive. But they say the best one is Furious 7. Which embarrassing to say I've not seen.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, I don't know.
Todd Fritz
It got 82 positive. Okay, so they really hit their stride after six.
Dan Patrick
Yeah.
Todd Fritz
Yes, Todd, I know it wasn't particularly convenient looking back, but wasn't there something kind of cool and refreshing when a movie came out and you got it, you got to get the ticket and you got to go on the ticket holders line and something like Rocky or Jaws and you got to. You're waiting around the block and everybody can't wait to get in there with their ticket and it's like blocks of lines just to get into the movie theater. I thought there was something looking back special about.
Dan Patrick
Wait, are you asking me if it's better? Are you just telling me no, I.
Todd Fritz
Know it's not better convenience wise because we want everything right now and I just want to get in. I could buy my tickets in advance of specific.
Dan Patrick
I know, but you coming up with something in the 70s or 80s and saying that I'm curious to see your opinion.
Todd Fritz
Wasn't there something exciting about going to the movies where something just came out and you're a two block line across the street holding your ticket, waiting to be allowed in. I thought that was kind of awesome back then.
Dan Patrick
Well, what else were you going to do? There was a lot. There was no other option? No, no. There's no streaming, Todd.
Todd Fritz
I understand why that was the case, but I just, I missed those days.
Dan Patrick
Where you're like, wow, you miss everything about this.
Todd Fritz
It was an event, going to the.
Dan Patrick
Movies, you miss everything about that. Era.
Todd Fritz
I really do.
Dan Patrick
You do. And you were there with your mom.
Todd Fritz
Yeah. Holding her hand.
Dan Patrick
Yeah.
Todd Fritz
I'm 14. I'm wearing my high school tennis jacket. No one else.
Dan Patrick
Can you. Can you put the tennis. Oh, you know what's coming in today? The gong. Yes, the gong will be here tomorrow because Todd told us he loves the Gong show. And usually when it's a bad musical act or comedian, then you hit the gong. I. We ordered a go. I asked the big German, I said, can you get me a gong? And he ordered a gong. And it comes in today. And I will be banging on the gong all day tomorrow on a Friday. So Todd is putting on his. That's his high school tennis jacket at Lincoln High. I think we're all in the same condition there, Todd. Of putting on our high school jacket. Leather jacket. You know, it's a little snug. Yeah. Can you button it?
Todd Fritz
It's not that bad.
Dan Patrick
No, no. It's got his. Lincoln. Lincoln High School. And so that was Ray Allen. Was Jesus Shuttlesworth at Lincoln High School. Marvin. So Todd's high school was where Spike Lee based. Jesus Shuttlesworth. And he got gay.
Todd Fritz
Correct. And Stefan Marbury went there in a couple, I think. Marv Albert.
Dan Patrick
Okay.
Todd Fritz
I think he went there.
Dan Patrick
All right.
Todd Fritz
I'm not sure if Todd's making the famous alumni list at Lincoln High School in Brooklyn. Only because of all of the people that went to Lincoln High School.
Dan Patrick
All right.
Todd Fritz
If it's East Hartford High School, I.
Dan Patrick
Like what Stephon Marbury doing now.
Todd Fritz
Being a legend.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, but Todd's doing this every single day.
Todd Fritz
I just saw Stefan Marbury at the Knicks game.
Dan Patrick
Did you? Okay. How's he looking?
Todd Fritz
Oh, it looks great.
Dan Patrick
Oh, he looks like he could play.
Todd Fritz
He looks rich.
Dan Patrick
Like he's not large.
Todd Fritz
No, no, no.
Dan Patrick
Oh, okay. Good for him. Good. It looks good. Todd, just so you know, I'm getting the gong. It's delivered later today, and we're going to set it up over here. That when you start to sing or you have, you know, a corny joke, then I'm hitting the goal.
Todd Fritz
I'm gonna be very busy. I don't know how you can even do the show.
Dan Patrick
I'm gonna have rotator cuff, sir. I'm gonna need Tommy John surgery.
Todd Fritz
You should wear it like, you know, like the flavor. Flavor clock. Because you're gonna be hitting it so much. Boys.
Dan Patrick
Miles in Waco. Hi, Miles. Good morning, Dan. Dan, it's.
Todd Fritz
Thanks for taking the call. A couple things for you guys. One, I wanted to see if Fritz.
Dan Patrick
He has Done a wellness check on Rebecca Lowe. I don't know if you guys saw.
Todd Fritz
Or not, but looks like he's trying.
Dan Patrick
To purchase Crystal palace.
Todd Fritz
So he's gonna run that into the ground. And then I've got a couple movies for you guys.
Dan Patrick
Okay.
Todd Fritz
So obviously my personal favorite sports movie as a kid, the Sandlot. Haven't heard it mentioned yet. And second, I think underrated movie, the Outsiders.
Dan Patrick
It has a who's who's cast. Tom Cruise, Emilio Estevez, Swayze. Yeah, but they weren't famous at the time.
Todd Fritz
They turned into stars.
Dan Patrick
Yes, they did. Yes, they did. Matt. Matt Dillon. Not Matt Damon. It's Matt Dillon. He was the heartthrob. Ralph Macchio was in there. We had a C. Thomas Howell, by the way.
Todd Fritz
Star. Soul Man.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, can't make Soul man today.
Todd Fritz
Better not.
Dan Patrick
Ray Dong Chung.
Todd Fritz
Good movie, though.
Dan Patrick
Yeah. Yeah.
Todd Fritz
Awkward.
Dan Patrick
See, Thomas? Yeah, yeah.
Todd Fritz
No, thank you.
Dan Patrick
Yes, it is kind of wild when.
Todd Fritz
You'Re, like, going through movies that you loved growing up and you're sharing them.
Dan Patrick
And you're like, oh, I just had.
Todd Fritz
This happen where I forget what the movie was.
Dan Patrick
But, like, watching it with my son's.
Todd Fritz
15, I'm like, Dude, this is like.
Dan Patrick
My favorite movie when I grew up. And it is horribly inappropriate considering things, you know. Well, Saturday Night Fever. My wife's, you know, who grew up on Staten Island. It's like, oh, that, you know, this is set in Brooklyn and Staten island and. And watching it with my daughter, who was probably 13 at the time, and she's like, I forgot a lot of scenes in there.
Todd Fritz
There's a woman dancing topless very early in that movie.
Dan Patrick
Alrighty. Todd. That is the least of the problematic issues with that movie, I can assure you. Yes, that is. Yes, there is very low on the list of problems. Yes.
Todd Fritz
Paul, before we break quickly, I had the list of famous alums from Abraham Lincoln High School. And the list is long. I mean, there's Leona Helmsley, the real estate. Louis Gossett Jr. The actor. It's pretty big time. Neil diamond, the singer. Cracklin Rose, Many more, of course, a bunch of athletes. Lance Stevenson, Fritzi. Is that correct? I believe so. The baseball player. Arthur Miller, the playwright.
Dan Patrick
Did Sandy Koufax go to Lincoln?
Todd Fritz
I don't know about Koufax. No, I don't have. Neil Simon, I think was. Went there. Barbara Streisand, I thought went to Lincoln. Neil Simon. Did not. Did not. But there's 60 people and Todd is not currently on the list.
Dan Patrick
Is there somebody that should be replaced with Todd's? Name.
Todd Fritz
I. I think Fritzy's had a better career than Sebastian Telefair. No offense. He snuck into the pros. It's debatable. Well, I'm not going to call out Arthur Tress, wildlife photographer from 1958. I'm not doing that.
Dan Patrick
Don't go there.
Todd Fritz
I'm not making fun of Sherry Turkle, class of 65, social studies professor. Okay, no offense.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, it's not a long list for my high school.
Todd Fritz
But you're on there. On Wikipedia, I would assume, right?
Dan Patrick
Probably at the top. So far, I'm going through all of.
Todd Fritz
Our high schools and none of us are on the.
Dan Patrick
Wait, I'm not on the William Mason High School.
Todd Fritz
Sorry, I haven't made it that far. Okay, hold on.
Dan Patrick
East Hartford High, they gave me a portion of the basketball floor because they put in a new basketball floor and then they gave me and I requested out by the three point line, you know, if they were going to give me part of the floor there. Yes.
Todd Fritz
William Mason High School Wikipedia page. Notable alumni, Percy Coleman, MLB pitcher, 1894. Josh Klein, NFL defensive lineman or NFL lineman. And Dan Patrick, you're on there. There's seven total people and you're one of them.
Dan Patrick
Okay, thank you.
Todd Fritz
Relax though. You were. You were gonna get upset, weren't you?
Dan Patrick
Yeah. Wait a minute. I mean, they should have a sign as you go into my hometown. You know, home of. I mean, they should. They shouldn't. They should.
Todd Fritz
Yeah, they should. Okay, a small sign, but they should be assigned just the same.
Dan Patrick
You know what? I will pay for the sign.
Todd Fritz
No, you can't pay for your own sign.
Dan Patrick
The Hollywood Walk of Fame. I got to raise $85,000. Maybe I should do my. My hometown first and see how that goes. And then we'll do the Hollywood Walk of Fame. All I know is Jeff and Hollywood called up and you know, he used to be part of the committee to have people nominated. And I'm saying, yeah, if you can do the legwork for me. Yes, Todd.
Todd Fritz
I like how there's different price points where you could be outside the McDonald's for this price or you could be by this cooler place.
Dan Patrick
I know, I know. All right, we'll take a break. More phone calls. Ernie Else will join us. He knows how to play Oakmont. He's won there before. He will join us, the hall of Famer, right after this.

Although I just saw Bryson DeChambeau hit a couple of shots in the rough, from one rough to another and then couldn't get it out of the rough with the next one. If you put it in the fairway, it probably looks like not that difficult of a course. The problem is trying to keep it in the fairway.
Todd Fritz
Yes, Paulie, they were just showing an overhead shot. You know, the flyby cameras at the, at Oakmont. There was like nine bunkers and a sliver of fairway in between them.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, wild. But they've taken out like 150 bunkers over the years. I think they used to have like 300 there. Ernie else knows all about that. He won four majors. He won the US Open twice. He won at Oakmont, winner of 80 pro tournaments worldwide. Ernie, good to talk to you. Thanks for joining us. What do you see when you see Oakmont?
C
Hi, Dan. Good to be with you, my friend. Yeah, no, listen, I put something on Instagram yesterday. You know, just because weather plays such a big part in golf, you know, they've had some wet weather up there in the Oakmont area, area, Pittsburgh. And I just kind of reminisced of our time in 94. You know, we had a heat wave, you know, 31 years ago and the golf course was rock hard, but with all the moisture up there in Oakmont, it's nice and green and as you just said, if you can get it in the short grass, you can put spin on the ball and you can get some control in your game. And I think that's what most of the leaders are doing this morning. They went out this morning with a bit of moisture and they're putting it in play. And from there you can eat some shots. They've already had two hole outs. Have you seen those two holdouts? I just saw one, Shane Loud, he just hold out on number three.
Dan Patrick
So do you like playing? Should the US Open be the toughest golf course you're going to play that year?
C
Yeah, I believe that. I mean, all throughout my time, you know, at the highest level, you know, the US Open was the toughest challenge by a bar none. You know, every now and again you go to the Open Championship. You know, I remember in O2 when we played at Muirfield, there was a Saturday, just this dark cloud came over and there was all havoc, you know, ensued. You know, even Tiger had a tough day. You know, he didn't have too many tough days in his prime, but he had a tough one. And. But other than that, you know, the US Open is the toughest challenge we have. You have some of the greatest championship golf courses in this country and they like to make them very, very hard, which is so you know what you're in for.
Dan Patrick
What were you 24 when you wanted Oakmont?
C
Can you believe it? Yeah, 24. It was a long time ago, baby.
Dan Patrick
But if you could go back and tell that 24 year old something, what would you tell yourself?
C
Well, a lot. I mean, you know, I remember, you know, in my kind of my speech afterwards, I said, you know, people will have to be patient with me. You know, I've got a long way to go. So that was kind of wise words from a 24 year old, because that's exactly what's ensued. You know, it was a Long. It's been a long road. I did win another three majors, you know, starting at 24. To only win another three, you know, it just shows you how tough it can be to win major championships. You know, I won my first one at 24 and my last one when I was almost 43, when, you know, Adam Scott had a tough finish, you know, at Litham. So I've had some good stretches of golf. Thankfully, I was, I've been in for the long run, you know, to have a 20 year career at the top level, you know, you're very fortunate to have that kind of career. So it's been, it's been a lot of fun, but it's been a lot of, lot of kind of struggles. You know, my, my game, there's so many disciplines in the game that you have to master, and over time, some of them decay a little bit just because of, you know, what's going on in your head. And, you know, obviously I had some putting problems and, you know, that's, that's kind of, that held me back a little bit. But for the most, you know, it's been a good run.
Dan Patrick
When did you first hear the name Tiger Woods?
C
No, I mean, long time ago. I mean, I remember playing the Buick Classic at Westchester Country Club, and that was another favorite golf course of mine. And Tiger was playing the pro am and everybody was kind of talking about Tiger. I think this was back in 94 even, or 95. I mean, he was, he's a couple of years younger than me. So, you know, we all kind of stood around as little kid, you know, and everybody said, no, he's going to be the next thing. So I met Tiger back in those days, and he played in quite a few events as an amateur. So now I was paired with him. I think I was paired with him in 95 when John Daly won the Open Championship at St. Andrews. I was paired with Peter Jacobson, Tiger and myself. You know, I was also paired with him in the US Open at Shinnecock in 95. So we played a lot of golf together at a very early age for him. So I've known him for a long time.
Dan Patrick
Did you get it right away that, you know, because some of the veterans told me, hey, he thinks he's going to come out here and dominate. And I remember one prominent golfer told me, it was like, hey, this is completely different when you come out here and then he wins, like, whatever. In Milwaukee, it's like, hello, world. And, you know, he didn't open the door, he knocked down the door?
C
Yeah. I mean, it's like any other sport. You know, you, you, you go from college football or basketball or baseball into the pros and it's, there's a different talent level there. You know, there's a different atmosphere, so to speak. He didn't quite win his first one, he didn't win his second one, but I think by the third one he figured it out. I think he won in Vegas or something. Ridiculous. You know, I remember speaking to Tiger. You know, I had a close finish at the Open Championship, but Tom Lehman won in at Lithum St. Anne's and I finished second. You know, I was sitting in a locker room that there's just a wall between the 18th green and the clubhouse where the locker room is the men's locker room. I sat there, I was having a couple of beers, you know, just reflecting on, you know, you know, how close it was, and Tiger sliding next to me and he started talking to me and, you know, I was like, you know, what do you, what do you, what do you mean? He says, no, you think I'm ready? I said, what do you mean? What are you talking about? He says, no, you know, I'm thinking about turning pro. And it was probably one of the biggest mistakes of my life.
Dan Patrick
You told him? Yes. You heard.
C
I should have told him. Go back to Stanford. Get a real job. You're not good enough.
Dan Patrick
Is Scotty, has he graduated to the. When we had Tiger versus the field, is it Scotty versus the field now in these majors, in your opinion?
C
I saw that. You guys starting to talk about that. Even the players are starting to mention that a bit. Just when I'm reading comments of, of really high regarded players like Justin Thomas, you know, saying, how can I catch this guy? You know, that sounds like my language back in the day, you know, with Tiger, how can I get close to this guy? So there's already a little bit of separation and truly so, because the guy's phenomenal. I mean, he's, you know, I mean, he gets his patch where he's hot. You know, he's very tough to beat. And to be honest with you, I've been watching the golf this morning. Scotty's. This golf course is made for him. You know, you have to hit it both ways. You got to put it in the air. You gotta have a good short game. Everything gets tested, but it, it's not the narrowest fairways I've ever seen at Oakmont. So it's, it's very playable, but in over four rounds, it's very tough to beat this guy when he's at his best. So, yes, there is. Thought like tiger disc kind of golf.
Dan Patrick
What does pressure feel like to you?
C
Well, it depends on where you at in your game. When you sharp, you know, when all your disciplines, you know, you, you, you got them, got them intact. It's, it's a measure of where you at in your game and how you can prove things to yourself. Because the pressure, the highest pressure is when you really get tested, you know, and if you want to get tested against the field, pressure is the, is the best barometer to, to test yourself. So it feels, it feels like you getting. Going through a test where your game's at when you, when you inform, when you're not informed. It's one of the worst experiences because you don't trust yourself. If this discipline that you're not quite mastering at the moment, if it's driving iron plates, short game putting, especially under pressure putting, you know, things fall apart if you're not. If you're not really on top of things. So it can be. It can be good and it can.
Dan Patrick
Be really, really bad, but you can't hide. That's the thing about golf is when I play on the weekend, I can reload. You got to go play your foul balls. Payne Stewart once told me, hey, the difference between us and a regular player is our misses. We know we're going to hit great shots. It's our miss, might be three yards off, yours might be 30 yards off. But have you had that feeling on the golf course where you go, I could just leave now and walk off the course and be done with this, go have a beer and, you know, I forget, you know, the hell with the last round.
C
Absolutely, you know, and the longer you play, the more those kind of situations can happen, you know, especially me at 55 now, if I have to put myself in that situation and I'm not on top of my game, that golf course will eat you alive. You know, if you're not on, on, on your game. The greens there are some of the most treacherous greens you'll ever putt on. You're gonna see four putts there. Believe me, over this week, you're gonna see daft shots out of the rough. And you're right. And Paige Stewart is right. In major championship golf, it's not about the great shots. It is, yes, but it's those shots that you miss, and you don't have a chance of hitting a shot near the flag. Where do you play it to where you have A chance to get the ball up and down or save a stroke or save two strokes. And that, at the end of the day, can be winning or losing the end.
Dan Patrick
If I made you drink a beer each hole in the major, who would be who. Who would have the most majors?
C
Without a doubt, John Daly.
Dan Patrick
Have you ever had a 19th hole sit down with John where you have a couple of. Couple of beers?
C
Now, listen, I've known John before the US Public knew about John. John came down to South Africa in the late 80s, early 90s, and he was a superstar down there before he became a superstar here in the US he won some tournaments down there. We were very young in those days, and, you know, if I was going to go to university, I had to do military service, but I had a couple of US college offers, and I would have gone to Arkansas. Can you imagine that?
Dan Patrick
You and John.
C
Yeah, you know, we might have. We would have definitely met there, but he's a good friend. He still plays Champions Tour golf. No, undoubtedly the guy, you know, he's slowed down a lot now, but in his heyday, not even I could come near you. I could have a couple.
Dan Patrick
It's good that John's slowing down, Ernie.
C
Yeah, well, we all slow down.
Dan Patrick
Yes, we do. And, you know, when I brought up pressure, I was wondering about, you know, we can't fathom what Rory was going through that Sunday at Augusta, because it was like. It wasn't joy. There was relief, real relief there. What is that feeling like of you just want the round, like you're just holding on for dear life and. And just exhale.
C
That is so true, what you say it. When I watched it, I was. I was in agony for him. You know, I could see the pressure even. Even when he was making putts, like on number 10. And so there was not a big relief of smile on him, on his face, because he knew there were really tough, difficult holes coming up, you know, 11. And at 12, I mean, there's a disaster on every single hole at Augusta, you know, very much like in major golf, so. But the one that really shocked me because he got really lucky on 11 because it was one. One roll away from making double. The ball was going in the water on his second shot, but then on 13, when he laid up, I think even he surprised himself because he's such an attacking player that he laid up and he thought, okay, I never really play safe, but I'm going to play safely. And then he dunks his third shot in the creek right of the hole where there's a slope that brings the ball back down to the. To the hole. So that's when I realized, wow, he's really trying hard here. And. And then he comes back with the tough shots. You know, on 15, he, you know, he makes eagle day. 16 is an unbelievable shot. 17, that iron shot. And then on 18, he screws it up. It was agony to watch, to be honest, but happy for him.
Dan Patrick
What's the coolest thing in your office?
C
Well, I'm sitting in our design office. You know, my. My guy, Greg Leche, he just left the office, so I'm sitting on his computer.
Dan Patrick
Oh, okay.
C
Coolest things. You know, I've got some memorabilia. I've got a photo here of Pebble Beach. You know, I never won there, but there's a new beautiful photo. But I got some US Open stuff here, and I got some signature stuff from Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer and. And so on. And I've got some other sports memorabilia. So it's almost like. It's almost like your place there. I see you got a lot of.
Dan Patrick
I got a lot. Yeah, I got a lot of. Do you ask Tiger for an autograph?
C
I've got an autograph from him, absolutely. But I name, too. Well, now, you know, as he. As he gets older, I'm going to get more. You never know.
Dan Patrick
Yes. Yeah. You don't want to get it when you're competing against him.
C
No, no, we were, too. We were, you know, rivals, so to speak. But he. He got me 85% of the time, unfortunately.
Dan Patrick
Great to talk to you. Thanks for sharing. Ernie.
C
You're the best. Thank you.
Dan Patrick

Stumbled upon Best Movie Without Stars in it as we were making the comparison with the NBA Finals Best Movie. I think Rocky is probably a number one seed There. Given that it won the Academy Award. Launched Sylvester Stallone. That Rocky. What? Five movies? Six movies. I forgot how many movies with Rocky, but nobody knew who Sylvester Stallone was.
Todd Fritz
That's nice of you to say.
Dan Patrick
Thank you.
Todd Fritz
I don't know if that's any good.
Dan Patrick
Yes, Paulie.
Todd Fritz
Do you guys know if Carl Weathers. Apollo Creed. I know he was a footballer player before that. Had he done a lot of acting before Rocky or was that like he was in great shape and a football player and he got the role.
Dan Patrick
Don't remember him in anything. He was also in Happy Gilmore. Right. Then he lose his hand. Yeah, he was.
Todd Fritz
Chubbs.
Dan Patrick
Yeah.
Todd Fritz
Spoiler.
Dan Patrick
Chubbs. Yeah. Not around for the sequel.
Todd Fritz
Damn it, Rock. What's the matter with you? There is no tomorrow. You thought I was tough? This guy will kill you.
Dan Patrick
Game four Panthers and Oilers.
Todd Fritz
You're transitioned from the end of that.
Dan Patrick
To promoting game four Panthers. Well, this goes on all the time. This isn't just on the show. It's Todd will do this walking around the office and then I just go, okay. And then move on to something like.
Todd Fritz
The crazy guy in the train in New York. You just kind of. You're used to it. You ignore it. It's not anything big deal.
Dan Patrick
Okay, let me see. Anything else? How about this Day in sports history.
Todd Fritz
Paul, I got a couple for you. Abner Doubleday.
Dan Patrick
Overrated.
Todd Fritz
It's funny you say that. He gets credit for inventing the game of baseball in 1839. However, some say it was created well before that. Wayne Gretzky won the Heart trophy. Big surprise there in 1985 when nine of those in a row the Bulls won their first NBA title. 1991 against the Lakers. Four to one. That's what Magic hurt the thigh, right?
Dan Patrick
Yeah. Yeah. But nobody brings up the fact that Magic was injured. When Mike wins the title. LeBron won one in the title.
Todd Fritz
Steve Young.
Dan Patrick
It is definitely me.
Todd Fritz
Our buddy Steve Young retired from the NFL in 2000. That's it.
Dan Patrick
Bobby Orr became the youngest player in NHL history to be inducted into the Hockey hall of fame. He was 31 and he had bad knees. And they waived the usual three year waiting period for Bobby. Or they got in at the age of 31.
Todd Fritz
Or they could have just waited.
Dan Patrick
Okay, thank you, John. Do you remember the first regular season interleague baseball game? It happened on this date. 1997. If you said the Giants beat the Rangers, you would be correct, sir.
Todd Fritz
Four to three.
Dan Patrick
Thank you, Todd.
Todd Fritz
Did you have that in my head. It was one of my scoreboard and.
Dan Patrick
Then Doc Ellis of the Pirates. No. Hit the Padres on this date in 1970. Was he on LSD when he. When he threw the no hitter?
Todd Fritz
I hope so, because we just asked it.
Dan Patrick
Well, I think he was on lsd. Maybe in a game with the Reds in Cincinnati where he hit like four of the first five batters. But Doc Ellis was. He was wild, crazy. I mean, June 12, 1970.
Todd Fritz
Reportedly under the influence of LSD.
Dan Patrick
Hello. In Cincinnati, first of a double header.
Todd Fritz
Performance enhancing.
Dan Patrick
Definitely not. Yeah, well, it enhanced him to be crazier. I think I remember that he went into the stand. Now, I'm trying to remember this. My friend was a huge Pirate fan, and I believe we were at that game. And I remember Doc Ellis was in the stands for game two for some reason. I don't know why I remember them. I could have just made that up, Todd.
Todd Fritz
Just hanging out or looking to fight somebody.
Dan Patrick
No, he wouldn't. No, I don't think so.
Todd Fritz
Hanging with a hot dog at a drink among the fans.
Dan Patrick
Yes. Chris in Syracuse. Hi, Chris. What's on your mind today?
Todd Fritz
Hey, thanks, Dan. Hey, I'm like a moth to light when you guys start talking movies. Underrated sports movie. North Dallas 40s.
Dan Patrick
Awesome. And I loved.
Todd Fritz
You're talking Outsiders, Cherry Valance, Diane Lane was awesome. And Dan, a question question for you. I'm gonna throw some great stoner characters and great movies if you have a fave. Big Lebowski, the Dude, Fast Times with Spicoli, True Romance, Brad Pitt as Floyd, Pulp Fiction, Eric Stoth's Lance.
Dan Patrick
And I know he just had a.
Todd Fritz
Cameo, but I love Charlie Sheehan in.
Dan Patrick
Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Okay. Yeah, he's in the police station. He's talking to Jennifer Gray. Pretty good hitting on her. I haven't seen the Big Lebowski all the way through. I know. I wasn't entertained by it. I tried. Hate to say that. Love Jeff Bridges, but I wasn't entertained with the Big Lebowski. Barry in Santa Fe. Hi, Barry. Good morning, fellows. Good morning, Chat row.
Todd Fritz
Lots of okay, movies mentioned today. Great movie with an unknown cast that went on to become superstars.
Dan Patrick
Stand By Me, River Phoenix, Corey Feldman.
Todd Fritz
Jerry o' Connell, Keeper Sutherland, John Cusack. Excellent movie. Unknown cast, went on to be superstar.
Dan Patrick
Good job. Rob Reiner, I think, was the producer or director of that. Yes, Marvin.
Todd Fritz
What about the Goonies?
Dan Patrick
Not a great movie.
Todd Fritz
There's a. There's a window of age that. Love that movie.
Dan Patrick
Yes, yes. Yes, you're right.
Todd Fritz
So it might just be age for me.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, that's a great movie.
Todd Fritz
Marvin looks so upset just now when you said you didn't think it was a great movie. Josh Brolin.
Dan Patrick
Yeah. Yeah, Josh was in that. By the way, read Josh Brolin's book.
Todd Fritz
Wow.
Dan Patrick
You want to talk about crazy childhood? You know, his dad is married to Barbra Streisand. His mom was crazy. He was the designated driver. He. He was driving her to bars. She. I mean, the lucky kid.
Todd Fritz
Barbara Streisand, right around New York City.
Dan Patrick
I don't know if he's hanging out with Babs. I'm talking about his mom, not Barbara Streisand.
Todd Fritz
I retract that.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, it's wild. And he's a really bright guy, and he's very good at, you know, explaining what happened in his childhood. Like, his mom used to have wild animals and. And, like, sick. The animals on him and his brother. Oh, my God. It's like. You know when you look back on your childhood and you go, I think this is normal. You know, my dad just took off this belt. My mom just went out and cut a switch off a tree. Like, all right, this is normal. And then you tell your kids that, you're like, what, did they get away with it? I go, yeah, they were my parents.
Todd Fritz
The neighbors encouraged me.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, yeah, you bet. You're gonna get it. As a matter of fact, if you weren't publicly hitting your kid, other parents were like, you better smack that kid. Yeah. What's wrong with him? Yeah, yeah. Things that make you go, todd, what did I learn today?
Todd Fritz
Seaton reminds us, and rightfully so. Just because the Knicks haven't shared a specific plan with the press after firing their coach doesn't mean they don't have a plan.
Dan Patrick
Thanks for the phone calls, emails, tweets, the all around support. A lot of fun today. We'll try to do it again tomorrow. Fritzi Seaton, Marv Poly, yours truly. We'll talk to you on the meet. Friday.

The Dan Patrick Show: Hour 3 – The Dark Side to Gambling with Ernie Els Release Date: June 12, 2025
In the third hour of The Dan Patrick Show, host Dan Patrick delves into several engaging topics ranging from the current state of the NBA Finals and the allure of star-free movies to the pervasive issues surrounding gambling in sports. The episode culminates with an insightful interview with golf legend Ernie Els, who shares his experiences and perspectives on the pressures of professional golf.
Dan Patrick opens the discussion by critiquing the ongoing NBA Finals, highlighting the absence of marquee players that typically draw massive viewership.
Dan Patrick [03:14]: "People complaining that there's no stars in the NBA Finals. Here's LeBron James talking about that."
Todd Fritz concurs, emphasizing the importance of individual excellence while underscoring the strength of team dynamics.
Todd Fritz [04:07]: "You know, we have this Indiana OKC situation, and these are two great teams. And if you are a basketball fan and you really love our game and you can learn so much from watching the way those both of those teams play."
The conversation underscores the value of strong team performances even in the absence of superstar talents, suggesting that great teams can still captivate audiences and compete fiercely.
Transitioning from sports, Dan and Todd explore the realm of cinema, specifically focusing on films that succeeded without relying on established stars at the time of their release.
Notable Films Discussed:
