So you're telling me that the AI that's meant to make everyone's job easier to manage just adds more to manage? On top of the thousands of apps the IT department already manages? Funny how that works. Any business can add AI. IBM helps you scale and manage AI to change how you do business, let's create smarter business. IBM Foreign.

Dan Patrick
You are listening to the Dan Patrick show on Fox Sports Radio. Final hour on this Wednesday. And it turned out to be a meat Wednesday courtesy of our partners heartlandstakeco.com man, those ribeye steak paninis, awesome. Pork chop Milanese, bacon wrapped filet mignon, cream corn. Who has it better than we do? No, but we have to wait until after the show for the other things. All right, we, we kind of jumped the schedule a little bit with the paninis, but they, they taste great. Taste great. All right, we'll talk to Tony Gonzalez. He is part of the Amazon prime, the Thursday night game. Boy, this is a great game. Rams and Seahawks coverage begins on Thursday night football at 7 Eastern. So we'll talk to Tony. Also, Reggie Miller will stop by. Should the Knicks hang a banner after winning the cup? They won the cup last night. Anybody think the Knicks. Okay, two questions. Will they? Should they? Marvin, I'll start with you.
Theodore
Yes to both.
Dan Patrick
Okay. Paul?
Paulie
I actually don't think they have a choice. And the NBA will absolutely make sure they do. That said, they will and should.
Dan Patrick
Okay. Todd?
Theodore
They will and should not.
Dan Patrick
Seaton? Absolutely. Both. Yeah, I'm going to guess, and I agree with Paulie that the NBA is going to say, you know, we gotta, we gotta continue to pump this up a little bit. We gotta make this important. And we would like for you to hang the banner. Should they hang the banner? No, they should not.
Theodore
No.
Paulie
Do you do it quietly like at 2pm on a Tuesday?
Dan Patrick
I, I service staff. Maybe somebody like overnight gets a, gets up there and puts it up there. See if anybody notices. Yes, Marvin. Hold on.
Theodore
DP but the Knicks have division title banners. I know. So the cup, because it's the cup, it's more important.
Dan Patrick
I know.
Theodore
You're the Knicks, the most overrated franchise.
Dan Patrick
Wow.
Paulie
Good question.
Dan Patrick
Wow.
Theodore
People don't play the Knicks. They play at the Garden.
Dan Patrick
That is true. That is true. Can you think of another building?
Theodore
Rose Bowl.
Dan Patrick
Okay. Yeah. If that was on campus at ucla, would it be different? But you do, I mean, you do go to the Rose Bowl. It's not on campus like the Coliseum is for usc. By the way, talking to a college football source yesterday, and I said, how much are these quarterbacks getting, those who are transferring? And he said, the going rate for a quarterback right now, transferring a good quarterback is three to four million dollars. That's, that's the going rate. And you've got four or five of them. And, and these are notable quarterbacks who are transferring. Yes. Paulie.
Paulie
I just want to get this breaking news. You can get the Emirates Cup NBA champion hat on new yorknicks.com and shirt.
Dan Patrick
Oh, I like that.
Paulie
And dish towels and so forth.
Dan Patrick
Okay. Yeah. All right.
Paulie
All available.
Dan Patrick
Okay.
Paulie
Sorry to break into.
Dan Patrick
All right. That's okay. And by the way, the Dolphins are going with Quinn Ewers over to a tongue of Iloa. I wonder if this is coming from upstairs because Mike McDaniel is trying to hold on to his job. Who gives him a better chance of keeping his job? You could make the argument that Tua does. Unless they've already made their decision and they're like ownerships. Hey, we want to see what Quinn humors can do. Let's bring in Tony Gonzalez, hall of Famer and Thursday Night Football. Tony and the gang. Big showdown. Rams Seahawks coverage begins at 7 Eastern. All right, let me start there. How surprised are you? Quinn Ewers is starting for the Dolphins and Tua has been benched.
Tony Gonzalez
I'm pretty surprised. I, I don't think who saw that coming. But you look at it, the way he's playing right now, it's kind of been somewhat up and down. Did not play well last week. It's the end of the season. They're not going to the playoffs. Is it one of those things? You know, he's got the concussion history. Do you want to keep him safe? It looks like sometimes he doesn't want to take a hit. When he's back there running around it, it, it seems like he's protecting himself. I, but I think, I think going forward with the Dolphins, maybe they get, they want to get a look at Quinn because maybe this is the end of the road for Tua. I, I, I don't know what's his contract situation? That's something that you got to look at.
Dan Patrick
Well, they got one more year. I think it's around 50 million. So big cap hit. If they move on. I don't know if this is a situation that Sean Payton had when he inherited Russell Wilson. You're going to probably get a new coach in Miami and then are they going to come in and you have this to a contract and you got to deal with that or they try to do what Denver did and just say to Russell Wilson, see you. You know, my coach wants to get his quarterback in there.
Tony Gonzalez
Yeah. It could always certainly go that way depending on the coach. That takes some cojones. So I mean especially with that cap hit.
Dan Patrick
Yeah.
Tony Gonzalez
I think to it, I like to, I think when he's on, he's on he can play really, really well. Obviously, you know, his best receiver went down ty week and that, that hurts you. But I, if, if the cap hit is at that 50 million mark, I got to believe that they're gonna, Whoever's in there, I would keep him. I mean, he, he's definitely plays well enough to, to. You don't want to take a 50 million dollar gap. But I think Russell Wilson's situation a little bit different.
Dan Patrick
But what's it like to play with a quarterback who doesn't have a strong arm?
Tony Gonzalez
Well, you know, I'm a tight end, so it's. I get the 8 to 10 yard route, a couple corner routes. I'm not really burning them over the top, so that doesn't bother me. It's like, hey, just give me the ball, put it up high so I can go get it. But yeah, that, that, that limits you for sure. You think Tua can't throw the deep ball?
Dan Patrick
You know, watching him against Steelers, that arm doesn't look like, you know, hey, I'm gonna, I'm gonna have to worry about him beating me over the top. I think he has wide receivers or he did with Tyreek who were faster than anybody they were up against and maybe created separation. But he had a couple passes against Steelers. Where I went, I don't know. Especially in December, on the road in December. Not exactly. Steve Young, he, He was, he was.
Tony Gonzalez
Definitely fading this last week's game. I think that put a bad taste in people's mouth. But I'm also too, you know, towards the end of the season, sometimes he's, they want to get a look at the young quarterback and then they'll make that decision going into, you know, the off season. And you protect your quarterback who's kind of sensitive, obviously his head issues. I, I take that very seriously. I, I was one of the ones when he got hurt before. That said, I don't understand why you want to keep playing with his concussion history, but maybe, maybe that's a little bit. That plays a little bit into it as well.
Dan Patrick
How many concussions do you think you had?
Tony Gonzalez
Shoot, I know for sure too, because. But I went back in the game, you know, it was a different game back then. You got your bell rung. Get back in there. How many fingers I'm holding up?
Ryan Reynolds
You're good.
Tony Gonzalez
Go back in there. But yeah, I would say too, that was. I got, I got lucky, I think.
Dan Patrick
Wait, that's almost impossible. You, you had 1300 catches, didn't you?
Tony Gonzalez
Yeah, yeah, around that.
Dan Patrick
I mean, just the odds of even when you're not, you know, catching a pass. 17 seasons, you think you only had two.
Tony Gonzalez
Maybe I had a little bit more, you know, my last season, year 17 in Atlanta, there's a couple times I caught the ball and landed, you know, normal landing on the ground. Part of it, Your helmet hits the hits. It's the pavement, the turf, and it was like a movie. Like the.
Dan Patrick
The.
Tony Gonzalez
It opens back up like the old school movies where it goes dark and then opens up to the light.
Dan Patrick
Oh.
Tony Gonzalez
And that's how my vision. That happened a couple of times during that season. That was another reason I was like, you know what? Maybe it's time for me to go. I don't know if it was necessary. Concussion, but over the years, your head gets a little bit softer as you.
Theodore
As you.
Tony Gonzalez
As you get older, you can't take the hits like you used to, so. But like knocked out type concussions. No, I never. I was never knocked out on the field or anything like that.
Dan Patrick
You retired. You were 37.
Tony Gonzalez
37 years old.
Dan Patrick
Okay. Kelsey's 36. What advice would you give him if he hasn't made a decision about next year?
Tony Gonzalez
If he hasn't made a decision. By the way, we were. I was texting with him yesterday. He told me, tell you, hello, Ohio boys.
Dan Patrick
Yeah.
Tony Gonzalez
I. I think right now he's got a big decision to make. Obviously he can still play. He's still putting up numbers. He's getting it done, and it ain't what it used to be, and everybody knows that. But I think for him, it's. It's also. What do you come back for? You have to look at that. I mean, obviously the quarterback going down with Pat is. Are they rebuilding now? Probably heading towards that way.
Dan Patrick
You can.
Tony Gonzalez
You guys, you know, it's a tough decision, but for him, what an amazing career. And I don't know what. If I was in his situation, I know what I would do.
Dan Patrick
Are you going to the wedding?
Tony Gonzalez
No, I don't think so.
Dan Patrick
Really?
Tony Gonzalez
I didn't get an invite, but.
Dan Patrick
Well, no, I don't know if anybody's got invites. It's early.
Tony Gonzalez
If I was invited, absolutely, I would go.
Dan Patrick
Okay. All right. Maybe a plus one. I'll go with you.
Tony Gonzalez
Yeah, let's go.
Dan Patrick
It's in Rhode Island.
Tony Gonzalez
Is it in Rhode Island? I didn't know that. So you got inside scoop.
Dan Patrick
Sources close to me tell me. Yeah. That it's in Rhode Island. What does this game tomorrow night come down to, in your opinion, Sam?
Tony Gonzalez
Donald? I think. I think. I think that's really?
Dan Patrick
Is the jury still out on Sam Darnold?
Tony Gonzalez
I think in big games, absolutely.
Dan Patrick
Okay.
Tony Gonzalez
Absolutely. And it should be, that's the way it should be until you show that you can show up in the play. And this is any young, any quarterback out there. This is what I always say you can do. Even like Drake May, you can, you can say, hey, you're playing so well, such good football. And I agree with you, you, you're doing well. But let's see what you do. Come playoff time, come big time games, big time stakes. Are you going to be able to control the ball? You're not going to, you're not going to turn it over. You're going to be able to lead your team. That's what the great ones do. That's what separates the great ones from the, from, from average quarterbacks, average good quarterbacks. And so we'll see what Sam Donner can do tomorrow. He cannot go out there and throw four interceptions like he did last time. He's got to play well because they got a very good football. They have a Super bowl team. If he plays well, they're. This team could win the Super Bowl.
Dan Patrick
Seems like there's a push happened yesterday with the NFL. Like now we got to start looking at these playing surfaces. And you know, he had the non contact with Micah, you know, Patrick, obviously that was an injury by contact. But what, what is the disconnect here? Is it just owners are cheap and don't want to pony up to get the best playing surfaces?
Tony Gonzalez
I, you know, owners are, they're interested in saving money and making money. You know, it's like the whole. Are we going to have 18 games? I think that would be silly. Stupid. But we are the name of money.
Dan Patrick
Yeah. Yeah. Huh. We are having 18 games.
Tony Gonzalez
Yeah, I think, well, I think that's silly. I think it's stupid. I don't understand it. You look at guys are dropping like flies anyway as it is right now. I don't understand why you would want an extra game. But yeah, the surface, that's another thing too. What is the safest surface out there? They have data to prove it. That grass is the best. You can do it if you have, you know, just put pony up the extra money. You're making a lot of money anyway, I don't understand it, but I guess, you know, I don't also. I don't own a football team.
Dan Patrick
I got some information yesterday and I don't know if it's been made public. Paulie, have you, did you see that information that I sent to you guys on the injuries with the different playing surfaces.
Paulie
I didn't see that out there.
Dan Patrick
So it actually had it ranked surfaces with ACLs, Achilles, other injuries. So each category and all of these stadiums. So it'd either be low, medium or high risk. And it's out there. That information is there and it's that specific. Each category, it'd be like Achilles tears, ACLs, sprained ankles. I mean, crazy. Do you want Nat. Do you want regular grass? Is that what you would want to play on?
Tony Gonzalez
Regular glass? I think you ask any player. They all prefer grass. It's easier on your body. Just. It's natural. It gives.
Dan Patrick
That's.
Tony Gonzalez
That's the stuff you want to play on for sure. Without, Without a question.
Dan Patrick
You mentioned Seattle can go to the Super Bowl. How good are the Rams?
Tony Gonzalez
Rams right now? They, they give my top nod. A complete football team. And I loved how they've evolved. Sean McVeigh is such a good coach. They're using that heavy personnel, using those two running backs with Blake and Kyron like it is. It's fun to watch the schemes that he keeps coming up with. And Matthew Stafford, you protect him and he'll give you the world. You know, he'll. He'll, he'll go out there and play at this. He'll probably get the MVP this year. The defense looks great. This is. And they're still pretty young, too. I mean, they're going to be pretty good for a while, but right now, for sure, they seem to be the most complete team out there because of the way Matthew Stafford is playing. That it makes them very dangerous, especially obviously in the nfc. I think that's. They're the best team.
Dan Patrick
I forget who it was. We had an analyst on last week and they talked about the difference between when you get older at quarterback, like Aaron Rodgers doesn't want to get hit. You know, you play because you're like, damn, this gonna hurt when you're younger. But then you get older and you're like, I know this is gonna hurt. I'm not gonna take. Take the hit. And you play differently. But as a player who gets hit on every play, how do you view your quarterback when he hangs in there and knows that extra split second, it's. He's gonna get crushed. But it could mean a touchdown.
Tony Gonzalez
Yeah, that's, that's where you have all the respect in the world and I. Matthew Stafford is one of the toughest damn quarterbacks who's ever played the position. The way he goes out there and puts his body on the line and keeps coming back and it makes you want to play harder for that guy. It makes you trust that guy, makes you love that guy. And that all goes into winning. And you got a guy who's going to put his body on the line to get the win. You'll go the distance. You'll do whatever it takes for him.
Dan Patrick
Have fun tomorrow night. Thanks again for joining us. Tone.
Tony Gonzalez
Thank you.
Dan Patrick
Present man, that's Tony Gonzalez, hall of famer. So 15,000 receiving yards and he had 1325 catches. Yeah.
Paulie
Paulie, this is one of my favorite Tony Gonzalez stats and this I don't know who's got better than this. He was first team all pro at 23 and at age 36, that's like Reggie White stuff. Yeah, first team all pro.
Dan Patrick
He was a 14 time pro bowler back when it meant something to be a Pro Bowler. Reggie Aloysius Miller Jr. III will join us coming up next. We're back after this in the Dan Patrick Show. Dan Patrick
Reggie Aloysius Miller Jr III hall of Famer NBC Sports NBA Lead Game Analyst I'll start with this. Should they will they hang a banner in the Garden after winning the Cup?
Theodore
Yes they will. They absolutely they should. Yes they should. This is a big moment for the Knicks. I think it's a big moment for any team. Now remember in the inaugural season when the Lakers won it, there was a lot of wrangling from the Lakers side of we're not going to hang an inseason championship banner. All we hang is championship banners and retired numbers. What did the Lakers end up doing? Hanging a banner in crypto. So yes, absolutely, if I'm the Knicks because this is a great building block for what's to come down the road. And you can always revert back and look up into the rafters and see that in season tournament banner hanging there and say, hey, as a team this is something that we achieved and this is we have bigger goals, don't get me wrong, of winning a championship. But this is a building Block for this team.
Dan Patrick
All right, let me play conspiracy theorist. Do you think maybe the commissioner ask the Lakers to hang the banner, Encourage them. We want this to be important. We want this to be bigger. And probably would say that to the Knicks.
Theodore
100%.
Tony Gonzalez
Yes.
Dan Patrick
Okay.
Theodore
I think it came down from the top. Yes. So I think Commissioner Silver talked to the bus family and said hang that. Basically hang this banner because everyone else will fall in line. Milwaukee has done it. They won last year. My only cautionary tale to this is the last two winners of this tournament never got past the second round. Again, this is an early sample size, but the Lakers didn't get past the second round in the playoffs two years ago. Milwaukee didn't get past the second round the playoffs a year ago. Again, small sample size, but to me, the Knick, or excuse me, the. Yeah, the Knicks are a better team than those last two champions. I believe so. In the east is not as dominant as the West. So I think the Knicks are sitting pretty good right now.
Dan Patrick
Do you feel robbed that you didn't get a chance to play for the cup?
Theodore
No, but I think it's a cool concept.
Dan Patrick
I was being sarcastic there, Wrench.
Theodore
Oh, were you? I mean, not really.
Dan Patrick
Did you get, I think when you went to the finals and you guys lost, does the second place team get anything?
Theodore
A pat on the back.
Dan Patrick
That's it. You don't get a, you don't get a runner up banner.
Theodore
Are you kidding me?
Dan Patrick
Wouldn't that be something you would put in the rafters that.
Theodore
Absolutely not. I would not put a runner up banner in. At the time Casico Field House. Now it's gamebridge. Absolutely not. Now I, we, we have Easter Conference champion banners I believe hanging in there. Okay, but I would not. Absolutely not. Am I going to put a runner up banner up? Absolutely not. That would be painful to watch, Theodore, to look up every. That's painful.
Dan Patrick
But it. But putting the Eastern Conference banner up is kind of saying we finished runner up.
Theodore
There you go. That's our runner up. That is our runner up.
Dan Patrick
You know, I do like what this tournament meant for the spurs because you want to play in some important games before you get to the playoffs. It's a young team and I think playing in a big game, playing in Vegas, playing for some extra money and playing for the Cup. In all seriousness, I think this is really something that could be beneficial for this spurs team. What do you think?
Theodore
Who did Milwaukee beat in the NBA Cup a year ago? OKC Thunder. I believe they are the current NBA champions. Am I correct.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, yeah.
Theodore
Building blocks for young teams. So if you're the spurs, you beat the Lakers in LA, Luca, LeBron, Austin, Reeves. Then not only that, you beat the defending champs in Vegas in the semifinal game, a great game. And then you lose in the finals to the Knicks. If you're, if you're Wimby and crew, these are great building blocks for our young team. And on top of that, when he's on minutes restrictions, so we didn't see the full capability of him. If I'm the Spurs, I'm in a great position right now.
Dan Patrick
How many teams can win the West?
Apple Card / CVS Announcer
Five.
Theodore
Okc, Denver, Houston. A lot would have to happen with the Lakers, but they can. Four. I would say those four. Four.
Dan Patrick
So I got the. You got Thunder, Nuggets, Rockets, Lakers. So these are the best odds as of today that the best odds starts with four teams in the West. Thunder, Nuggets, Rockets, Lakers, Knicks, Pistons, Cavs, Spurs. So yeah, four teams. Four teams.
Theodore
All right. The only thing on that odds list I would probably put lower just because I have not liked how they played all season long is the Cleveland Cavaliers. Very disappointing start to the season in my opinion. This is a team that had the second best overall record a year ago. They ran away with the Eastern Conference and they were very disappointed in the playoffs losing to my beloved Indiana Pacers in the second round. But they have not shown any fight or desire. I know injuries have been a little bit a part of it, but I've been very disappointed. Not to say that they can't. But right now, Detroit, the Knicks are the two clear cut favorites in the East. Orlando is kind of looking over their shoulder a little bit. And then to me, this is where Cleveland falls in a little bit.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, this is the window of opportunity for the Knicks because now Detroit was a surprise last year. They've played really well, been consistent. The Cavs are a disappointment. Boston's banged up, Sixers banged up. So it feels like this is the year for the Knicks to go to the NBA Finals.
Theodore
I would be absolutely shocked if the Knicks do not represent the East. Now again, there's a lot of work to be done and I love how Detroit has started the season and how they played, but it comes down to this and these two teams faced one another in last year's playoffs. Do you trust Cade Cunningham and Detroit in these big moments? Because I've seen. We've seen Jalen Brunson against Detroit in Detroit. I just trust the Knicks more. And you could say what you want about Brunson. And Carla Anthony Towns defensively, give me Josh Hart, give me og, give me Mikhail Bridges, give me Deuce mc. I just trust those dudes more come playoff time because I know at the end of the day the ball is going to be in the hands of Jalen Brunson and the dude just delivers. I just trust the Knicks more. Not to say that Detroit can't beat them because they certainly can. But Durham is going to have to continue to outshine and outplay Cat, which he didn't do in last year's playoffs. So I just trust the Knicks more at this point. At this point, because Detroit has to show me. They just have to show me.
Dan Patrick
Did you know that there's a movie based on Dennis Rodman when he left the Bulls to go to Vegas?
Theodore
Right, And I heard they changed the lead guy. It was Jonathan Majors who was supposed to play Rodman. And now I believe it's Lakeith Stanfield. Stanfield, yeah, I'm in to see that because I've heard, I've heard stories about that 48 hours trips for the worm.
Dan Patrick
What? What did you hear?
Theodore
Well, I just heard Rodman strip clubs, alcohol and 20 rebounds and I don't know what order does that go, but.
Dan Patrick
How surprised are you? How surprised are you that Phil Jackson let this happen and Michael Jordan allowed this to happen?
Theodore
Aren't we living in a different time? Could you imagine if there was TikTok and Instagram back then, what this would have looked like? I mean, again, I'm sure they sat down Dennis and recanted all the stories and stuff and that's how they come up with the script. But we, we could, we could have saw this in live time if Instagram and, and Twitter and all that was.
Dan Patrick
But I think Michael Jordan said if we let him go to Vegas, he's not coming back. In the last dance documentary. Yeah, but, but in the, in the. When they were deciding on, hey, he needs to blow off some steam, we're going to let him go to Vegas. Like, I, I can't imagine that Jordan would allow that to happen.
Theodore
Let me ask you, this is what I don't know. In that dog, did they end up winning the championship that year, the season that this happened?
Dan Patrick
Yes.
Theodore
Okay. In the line. I think at the end of the day, Mike knew as long as Dennis is happy because Dennis only really had two things. Rebound and get underneath the skin of calm alone. That was it. That was his job description and played defense. But I mean his job, it wasn't like he had to carry the scoring load Like Mike and at times, Scotty.
Dan Patrick
It's still amazing when you look at. At Rodman, from, you know, this springy kid with the Pistons to then becoming one of the faces of the NBA, dating Madonna, coloring his hair and. And he couldn't wait to play against Karl Malone. Like, it was still an amazing story. When you think about he wasn't a big time recruit, not a score. He was a scorer in college. But, you know, when he got to the pros, it's like, I don't care. I didn't want to shoot free throws.
Theodore
I think the bad boys did a good job of defining his role when he got there. Rebound and play defense. And I think you've heard Isaiah tell this story about, you know, when they used to face the Boston Celtics and Larry would get upset having Kelly Tripuka and Kurt Vincent and those guys try to guard him. And him saying, you ain't got no brothers to guard me. I mean, that's. That's how Larry legend was. And then the year they brought in Rodman and Isaiah saying, I got. So we got someone to guard you now. And it was the worm. So defining his role and him accepting his role, I think really catapulted his career.
Dan Patrick
Talking to Reggie Miller, the Hall of Famer, lead analyst on NBC Sports, I was watching a video where Isaiah Thomas took a swing at Rick Mahorn, and I think he hit him and Mahorn laughed. So Mahorn is holding the ball. Like, people don't may not realize how much of a bad dude Rick Mahorn was that, you know, we focus on Oakley and the Davis brothers, but Rick Mahorn was not to be messed with.
Theodore
And think about that team Detroit had them all at one time. Bill Lambert, Buddha, Rick Mahorn, he was a part of that. I believe that's when he got traded or let go or when he was with Philadelphia is when this happened. And it was almost like a mosquito hit him in the face when he was holding the ball. It was like. He didn't even feel it. But that's when you could let go of some of your anger back in the day. You can't do that now. Now you see the whole everyone thinking and acting like they're gonna fight. Hold me back. Hold me back. I mean, if Dylan Brooks and LeBron really wanted to get into it, I know, I know they could have gotten into it. But that's. That's all for show. Come on, guys. I mean.
Dan Patrick
Who would you take? If it was Draymond Green and Dylan Brooks in the cage in the Octagon.
Theodore
That's a good one. Oh, that's. That's a good one. I. I would take neither. There's one guy I would take over all these dudes. Current player on our chest. Oh, no one was going to mess with my dude in the Octagon. I'm going with Sir Ron Artest, one of my favorite teammates ever. He might have had a few screws, but I absolutely loved playing with our. Our practices were better than the games because you. I've never seen anyone play deep, first of all. I've never seen anyone play defense like this before. He was so gifted defensively, but he was tougher than. I mean, I talk about my Davis boys, but I wish I would have had Ron when I had my superpowers when I was younger. I got one when, you know, it was really Jermaine's team. If I would have had him in my younger days, maybe I would have some damn jewelry. Maybe I. He would have been my Rodman. See, I would have let him go.
Dan Patrick
Wait.
Theodore
I would let him do whatever he wanted to do. Oh, if I was.
Dan Patrick
If Ron had to go to Vegas. But I thought Alvin Robertson's the one guy nobody wanted to mess with.
Theodore
No, we didn't. Ron and Alvin Robertson, those dudes. Now that would be a cage, man. I would put money on that. That's pay per view right there. Pay per view.
Dan Patrick
I love that. Your. Your buddy Mark Jackson tells the story that he was playing dice and they were. They were like fixed dice. And Albert Robert. Alvin Robertson was winning all the money. But Mark said that everybody was afraid of him. They weren't going to call him on that.
Theodore
No one was going to challenge them. They knew they were getting cheated, scammed. But no one was going to say anything to Albert. That was the first thing. John Long. John Long, who was my mentor. Indiana, do not look, say, suggest anything to Alvin Robertson. Just let it go. If he fouls you, you say my bad when he fouls you.
Dan Patrick
Back in the good old days, you.
Theodore
Know, back in the good old days when basketball was just clean and fun.
Dan Patrick
Well, Vernon Maxwell. Vernon Maxwell's in that category, too.
Theodore
He's a loose crew, too. And I love me something part of those shooting guards you did not want to mess with. I love me some mad facts. I love me some mad Max.
Dan Patrick
Happy holidays to you. Great to talk to you again. Thanks.
Theodore
Happy holidays, Theodore. And to my dad. I love you guys. Ho, ho, ho.
Dan Patrick
That's Reggie Aloysius Miller Jr. III, NBC Sports, lead game analyst with the NBA. That's. It's such a great story. And when I first spent time with Reggie and Mark Jackson when the Pacers were in the NBA Finals, that's when I first got to know Reggie off the floor. And, and Mark would tell stories, but he, he would just, he said you didn't want to mess with Alvin Robertson, who was only, I think 6:2 but played for the Spurs. But they're playing a dice game and they know that Alvin is cheating them, but they were afraid of him. So they continue to play to lose money. All right, we'll take a break. And they are going to go with Quinn Ewers, the former Texas and Ohio State quarterback in it looks like the final three games of the regular season. Paulie has a quick football quiz.
Paulie
You ready?
Dan Patrick
Yes.
Paulie
This is based off our last guest earlier this hour. Tony Gonzalez. He had a 13 year gap. Now he was a first time All Pro a bunch of times but first team All Pro at 24 and then 37. That's 13 years between selections. There's only one other player that had that long of a gap in all pro selections in football, in football, in the NFL.
Dan Patrick
He Reggie White.
Paulie
No, but Reggie White had a 12 year gap as did Charles Woodson.
Dan Patrick
I was my next guest.
Paulie
Great guest Charles Woodson and Adam Vittateri the kicker. Okay, this player, defensive back out of Purdue. Almost sure.
Dan Patrick
Not Daryl Green.
Paulie
Another good guess.
Dan Patrick
Not Champ Bailey out of Purdue.
Paulie
I think he went to Purdue.
Dan Patrick
Okay. Yes, Marvin.
Theodore
Rod Woodson.
Dan Patrick
I was trying to think of all the great defensive players that came out of Purdue.
Paulie
He's from Fort Wayne, Indiana. Rod Woodson was first team all pro at 24 and 37 just like Tony Gonzalez.
Dan Patrick
And he blew out his knee in a game. May have. He was playing corner at the time then I think after the injury maybe he went to safety after that.
Paulie
And he had six pro bowls after his knee surgery.
Dan Patrick
Wow, that's nuts. Oh, what a great athlete. Track guy he was. Great athlete this day in sports history. Paul, what do you have?
Paulie
Oh, great one. Dan Marino, 1984, rewrote all the records. Touchdowns, completions and yards in 1984. 48 touchdowns in 1984. And let's see. George Foreman hosted Saturday night live in 1994.
Dan Patrick
Also 2022. We were in my garage for the Christmas party. The vikings rallied from 33 to nothing halftime deficit to beat the Colts 3936 and overjoy. Let's see. Oh, here's one. Ladanian Tomlinson. He broke Paul Horning's 46 year old NFL single season record. He scored a touchdown against the Chiefs to give him 180 points in the season. Paul Horning, a running back for the packers and also their place kicker. The first NFL title game 1933. Paulie's Bears beat the Giants 2321 at Wrigley. Missed that one at Wrigley. All right, so we got that. We got that. Poll results. Seaton poll results. We got up there right now.
Theodore
Travis Kelce. What would you do?
Dan Patrick
Would you run it back or retire right now? That is still had 87% says he should retire.
Theodore
It's been the whole time.
Dan Patrick
87. Yeah. Well it could be anti Chiefs bias maybe if he retires then Taylor Swift doesn't show up at football games. So there could be a couple of mitigating factors in people's opinions there. Yes, Paul.
Paulie
Dan, we have NBA cup news. This just in from Sham Sharani of espn. The New York Knicks will not raise an NBA cup championship banner at msg. Sources tell yes, the Lakers and Bucks raised banners for the NBA cup over the past two years. Knicks will celebrate with home fans on Friday. No racing of the banner. I will bet this gets reversed before we're on air again tomorrow.
Dan Patrick
Do you think the NBA home office is going to say to the Knicks, no. You guys really, really love that banner?
Theodore
Yeah.
Paulie
I would advise you.
Dan Patrick
Yeah. You know what? Best way to share it with your fans is display it with your fans. Yeah. Yes. Marvin, hold on.
Theodore
But at the Garden they have banners for Billy Joel and Harry Styles. But you're not going to put up the NBA Cup. The gall.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, but Billy Joel, I understand that that's an incredible feat and last night was too. I don't know. I don't know. Yes, Todd is part of that because.
Theodore
They think they're close to a championship and if they were a team that was just a disaster with very few wins then maybe they would be more amenable to.
Dan Patrick
Let's put that up.
Theodore
It's going to be a long time before we come close to celebrating anything.
Dan Patrick
With the spurs put that banner up. If they had won.
Theodore
I think they would.
Dan Patrick
Yes, Marvin.
Theodore
They've won championships in the past 40 years. So they.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, no, that's what I'm saying. They got actual championship banners.
Theodore
I think they might Put up a small banner. But the Knicks, the nerve. Like, oh, you know, we're too good for that. No, you're not too good for anything.
Dan Patrick
I don't know. It feels like that owner will be like, I like nice, you know, shiny things and new things and let's put the banner up. Yes, Todd.
Theodore
Yeah, but those passionate, crazy New York fans, I think they would mock that and be pissed off that they would hang something like that. Let's celebrate when we win the actual championship. This is ridiculous. Take that thing down.
Dan Patrick
Nate in la. Hi, Nate.
Theodore
Morning, dp. Quick shout out to Tyler. That dude deserves a raise. A couple comments about the NBA. Knicks don't need a banner when they got Spike Lee. I'm sure they'll give him a jacket to display and then the piggyback off of what Seton said about the NBA Cup. What about making it the North American cup and having teams from the NBA G League, the Canadian Elite Basketball League, and the top basketball league of Mexico, which I will not try to pronounce the name of. All right.
Dan Patrick
Thank you, Nate. All right. Good idea. Ish. Let's go around the room. What we learned, by the way, Meet Wednesday. I'm all for it. Now. We are gonna have a meat Friday as well. And then I'll take a pie on Friday as well from Fritzi. And this can't be one of those you smash me in the nose and then you put the pie on my head. That's rude, because if you do it, we have problems. I'm not laughing.
Theodore
Did I do. I don't think I did.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, you did. You put it on the top of my head.
Theodore
Laid on top of your head, yeah. What a jerk. I don't even remember doing that.
Dan Patrick
What'd you learn today?
Theodore
RG3 feels the NFL needs to mandate that all teams play on grass. He'd advise my home to Parsons not to play next year.
Dan Patrick
What did I learn today?
Theodore
Reggie Mill absolutely loved playing with Ron Artest. He may have had a few screws loose, but a great defensive player and extremely tough.
Dan Patrick
Thanks for joining us. Hopefully we entertained you. If not, we'll try it again tomorrow. Have a great day.

Guests: Tony Gonzalez, Reggie Miller
The third hour of The Dan Patrick Show featured lively and insightful conversations with NFL Hall of Famer Tony Gonzalez and NBA Hall of Famer Reggie Miller. The episode’s main themes revolved around timely sports headlines: the New York Knicks’ NBA Cup victory and whether the team should hang a banner, the Miami Dolphins’ quarterback controversy, concerns over NFL playing surfaces, and the evolution of NBA toughness. Both guests offer their unique perspectives as former elite athletes, with plenty of humor and storytelling from Dan and his crew.
(03:14 - 06:26, 22:00 - 23:52)
(05:14 - 06:18)
(05:37 - 06:18)
(07:11 - 18:14)
(13:06 - 18:14)
Tony: Believes the Rams are the most complete team, praises McVay’s evolving offense and Stafford’s toughness.
Surface debate:
On Matthew Stafford's Mentality:
(22:00 - 38:49)
Tony Gonzalez on concussions:
“You got your bell rung. Get back in there. How many fingers am I holding up?...Go back in there.” (10:27)
On Kelsey's future:
“What do you come back for?...Are they rebuilding now? Probably.” (11:55)
Tony on NFL surfaces:
“They have data to prove it. That grass is the best...I don't understand it, but I guess, you know, I also don't own a football team.” (14:46)
Reggie Miller on hanging the NBA Cup banner:
“Remember in the inaugural season when the Lakers won it...What did the Lakers end up doing? Hanging a banner in Crypto. So yes, absolutely, if I’m the Knicks...” (22:19)
Reggie on team-building:
“These are great building blocks for a young team...when he’s on minutes restrictions, so we didn’t see the full capability of him. If I’m the Spurs, I’m in a great position right now.” (26:35)
Reggie on NBA bad dudes:
“I've never seen anyone play defense like [Ron Artest] before...He was so gifted defensively, but he was tougher than...I wish I would have had Ron when I had my superpowers...” (36:19)
This episode gives a full-spectrum look at sports culture in 2025—how new traditions (NBA Cup) are established, how locker room values change, and how legends view current headlines. Tony Gonzalez and Reggie Miller both bridge the generations, drawing smart parallels between their playing days and the present, making this a rewarding listen for even the most casual sports fan.
