I learned something in the last week then. And you should always allow yourself to learn things that what I'm doing now requires different energy perhaps than what I've done in the past. I did a first episode with Rowdy Gaines. I've never met Rowdy Gaines. I started the episode, I'm hugging a screen, right. To show him that I'm welcoming him and loving. But you can't. I mean, how do you hug a screen? And then I'm going in big. So now. Now you're getting this Tony, then you're getting this Tony.

the panel, like, well, I mean, I've seen two things. I love baseball. I love the baseball All Star game. We want to criticize the baseball All Star game for being this or that. It is the best by far of all the All Star specimens we're throwing out there. And sandlot would be an example. Okay, sandlot sidebar in the middle of a game. I loved it. I thought it was great. So I would go around the horn on that with the panelists. But for me, when you're a sport, you are what you are.

So other sports have gone with. With the streamer of the day. We've seen this even, you know, let's bring in five streamers. Co collaborate with us and we'll get more views. No, baseball should be going in for the sandlot. You can tell me. Schmaltzy, schmaltz all the way. That's your DNA. The opposite side of that is get the streamer. And that's like a vampire blood transfusion that a life hacker is doing with a younger person. You know that guy Brian Johnson, you know, he's getting the blood of a 20 year old. You don't need that. You're baseball. You did it.

Oh, I'm, I'm. I mean, I'm not a take guy, though, dad. I'm a perspective guy. I'm gonna be me. This is one of the things someone told me some great advice when I Was sitting there the day two of, of, of the long summer I had. And it was. Your first show is going to be great. In your mind, the 24th one is going to be the better show. So I went through five iterations of around the Horn 2.0. I think I love around the horn and I really, I love pti and I'm proud of what that was and I can do that again in the future. But right now I wanted to be in a space where I could be me a little bit more. And that's not takes, but that is living in moments. And that's where I landed. And I'm real happy in this space. I could do this every day. You know, I'm doing it weekly right now, but I feel like, okay, yeah, I want to relive that moment that just came up in my feed. That's the, that's the nugget of the idea, the kernel of the idea.

[Dan Patrick]

Okay. I got my daughter's wedding coming up.

But what I did see was the mute button. And the full desk was auctioned off at the Mothership headquarters. And someone else who happened to just bid for it got the full desk. And I'm seeing it on X on Twitter, just come up and like, well, okay, I was trying to carve that into pieces and give it to people who mean something to the show and mean something to me. And now I can't even give you the mute button.

Oh, my goodness.

The picture was like, somebody had a hostage situation. It was in there.

Okay. New episodes released every Tuesday. So each week, Tony and a rotating cast of guests, we'll dig into a single iconic sports moment and explore why it still resonates. I'm guessing if you had Rowdy Gaines on the former Olympic swimmer, Are we talking about Michael Phelps?

It's precisely that, Dan. And why would I. I mean, I don't cover swimming. I don't swim. I know how to not drown, is the line I said to Rowdy. You know, but the genesis of this. Of the show came to me in that this video came up in my feed and I started crying. So now I want to unpack that. I'm not going to use this show as my therapy chair every week. But just for the first episode, I wanted to sit in a moment that and many moments that are irresistible to me, and it's that moment. So Phelps is the image that sticks in my head. But I know it's not about Phelps solely because Jason Lisak had the greatest split in Olympic history. But then I know it's not just about Jason Lisak. So this is what I'm kind of pulling on the thread. And it's Rowdy Gaines voice when he makes the call. Dad, you know how I love my, my, my play by play guys, my analysts, my, my, you're an idol of mine. The voice for me unlocks the full feeling. So I got to do something with Rowdy where Rowdy played Rowdy and I played Dan Hicks. And we read the transcript of that and I heard it in real time. And Rowdy hasn't thought about this. I mean, I'm sure he's seen the video. But he told me, you know, I haven't reenacted this ever. And he delivers the voice. He's tightening up. Speaking of the French swimmer Elaine Bernard, and that even in that moment was like twink, a little bit of like, wow, something got me. And then he did it. He did it. So I unpacked that moment. There's an inspiration. I love the podcast, the rewatchables for the Ringer Network. And I had been mulling on rewatchables for sports. Why aren't we doing this game is a big, long thing. I don't know. If I would want to rewatch the entirety of a game, I would maybe in front of a live audience and have some fun with that, but not for a full podcast. But then you get to a moment and you can rewatch that 10 second clip. You could break it down by frame if you want. You can do that and then you can go on all these different side quests during it. And that's what the show is.

[Dan Patrick]

I never understood this, and I said this to people in management, that I found you to be one of the most talented people at espn and it was like you weren't doing anything other than around the horn. And at the mothership, they usually try to have you do other jobs. Now that could be, you know, budgetary reasons, but still, I was shocked that you left. Like I, I said you would have been my, my nominee for Jeopardy. I, I think you instead of Ken Jennings, you would, you'd be great in that role. But I just never understood why the mothership didn't hold on to you and offer you something else. Am I missing something?

[Tony Reali]

I don't think you're missing something. I don't think I'm missing something. I don't even know if they were missing something. I'm a person who is fiercely independent in a lot of ways. I loved being hands and fingers all over one particular thing rather than, I mean, this may not be the best business strategy. My wife is now the CEO of my whole Real Ones media, you know, and she's like, no, we're going to. Yes, I can appear in different places. I can do many different things and I'm happy to be doing that. But, but in that particular moment, I thought that show deserved. And I thought I deserved giving everything I could to that. So I didn't, I didn't appreciate maybe those other opportunities. I didn't ask for them and they didn't come my way. I can be honest about that too. But the new landscape. So I got out of this moment with the show and you're living a moment. I've said this before. I'll say it again because I love the reference. I just want people to Google it. There is a Oscars where Will Ferrell, Jack Black and John C. Reilly sing a song about being the comedian at the Oscars. The Lonely Loneliest man in Town. Do you know this?

[Dan Patrick]

No.

[Tony Reali]

Okay, well, let's. We'll put it. We'll Google it, whatever. But they sing this very elaborate song and it ends with them trying to be funny and getting a date with Helen Mirren. But at one point, Jack Black asked Will Ferrell in song, what did you think when you took off your pants and you ran around, you know, Talladega Nights, and he delivers the line, I thought they'd love me, you know? And what did you think when you're mutant Woody Page? I thought they'd love me. I, you know, I wanted to be loved. I'm somebody who wants to be loved. That those calls didn't happen. The industry was changing so rapidly. I had to educate myself. Dan, you'll see, or I hope you'll see, parts of me in the show that aren't podcasting. It's full on walk and talk. I'm taking that from YouTube. I'm taking that from my own personal love of the Goodfellas shot.

Right.

But, yes, it's that. So I had to realize podcasts were getting the TV jobs, and maybe it was I the last TV host, Was I the last John Wayne in this town? I don't know if there's TV hosts in the future. They just might be people who work on digital who go back to tv.

This according to the Sports Business Journal. Sports Business Journal reporting WNBA commissioner Kathy Engelbert was not planning to suspend Alyssa Thomas for burying a fist into Caitlin Clark's throat three weeks ago until NBA commissioner Adam Silver implored her to reverse course and issue the discipline. Engelbert subsequently suspended Thomas for one game and ordered a flagrant two penalty that carried a $1,000 fine. While a WNBA spokesperson said yesterday that it was absolutely false that Engelbert did not originally plan to suspend Thomas, sources believe the fact Silver needed to persuade Engelbert is another sign she is likely in her final season as commissioner. This according to Sports Business Journal. I was sworn to secrecy on Monday I was told about this. I and you know, someone even who told me said, I don't want you to give the appearance you're piling on Kathy Engelbert. But I will tell you that there is going to be a story that emerges about this. And Sports Business Journal has the story and says that it was Adam Silver, the NBA commissioner, who had to persuade her, according to Sports Business Journal, that she needed to issue a one game suspension and a flagrant two penalty that carried a $1,000 fine.

[Paulie]

Yeah, I'll ask the question. Kathy Engelbert, the commissioner of the wnba, her contract expires after the season at the end of 2026. While the league has had unbelievable growth the past few years under her stewardship, could you see the NBA overseeing this? Want a fresh start at the commissioner's spot?

[Dan Patrick]

Yes. Yes. Now, I don't have any inside information on this. The source who told me that this is a story that was going to come out. There were other things that came out. You know, once we had this situation in Tahoe, when Kathy said yes, we waited two hours and then we found out that, you know, PR department, WNBA was telling her not to do it. Okay. And then all of a sudden I started. I was getting information. I didn't. I didn't probe. I didn't ask for any of this. It was just, hey, just to give you an idea, you know, there may be, you know, some turbulent times behind the scenes going on. And I don't know, you know, she was talking to the owners, WNBA owners. She was wrapping up a meeting with them. I don't know if during that meeting, maybe somebody said, hey, let's, let's not do any pr, even though you said, yes, we're not going to do any pr. I don't know if that's true or not. I still haven't heard from anybody with the wnba, even privately. And I thought for sure, I was almost positive that I would get somebody from the WNBA or the commissioner who would say, hey, can I talk to you off the record? And I would have said, you know, gladly. There was nothing and even an apology to say, look, sorry for the mix up or maybe a clarification. But I told the audience I promoted it. And that's why I think I was bothered. I was bothered when we tried to get a statement from the WNBA three weeks ago on this moment that Sports Business Journal is talking about. I asked Paulie during the show, get a statement from the wnba. So for three hours during the show, we couldn't find anybody. Nobody was available. That's just not how you run a league. I don't want her to lose her job over anything that happened with me. But is this symbolic emblematic of how the league is run? That would be where, if I'm Adam Silver in the NBA, that that's where my concern would be. And it could be a bad day that she had or maybe they had, I don't know. But this is Sports Business Journal and I'll repeat it one more time. The commissioner, Kathy Engelbert, suspended Thomas for one game and ordered a flagrant two penalty that initially she did not want to suspend Alyssa Thomas for the act of bearing her fist into Caitlyn Clark's throat. Adam Silver, and the word is, implored her to reverse course and issued the discipline. Not ordered. Implored. Now, WNBA spokesperson said earlier today it was absolutely false that the commissioner did not originally plan to suspend Thomas. Sources believe the fact that Adam Silver needed to persuade her is another sign she's likely in her final season as commissioner. Well, she's in the final year of her contract, so that might have something to do with this as well. And you got growth. We got expansion TV deal travel. Maybe you maxed it out. But now comes the hard part, I think as you move forward, who are you? What do you want to be? How big do you want to be? But this is a report from the Sports Business Journal. Oh, boy. Yeah, Paulie.

[Paulie]

It always goes back for us because we've been doing this, you've been doing this a long time. When the PGA Tour inherited Tiger woods, and that is once in a generation at best. And you get once in a generation a player like that who brings in non golf fans, casuals and what you do with it, I don't know if any league can be prepared for that. It's like, like Michael Jordan when he joined the NBA, Magic and Bird had laid a little groundwork. It wasn't, they weren't going in blind, but it's just this league inherited Caitlin.

[Dan Patrick]

Well, Bird and Magic grew the game. They, they, they brought it out of the depths of degradation. It was like, you know, when your finals are on tape delay. And then when Larry and Magic came in, that was the breath of fresh air. And you know, when David Stern took over in the early 80s, he wanted to empower individual players. He wanted you to be tuning in to see a player. Now growing up, I tuned in to see a team. Now you would what? They promoted the team. Not necessarily the individual. David Stern, part of his brilliance was, no, we're going to promote these individual players in a team game. And then with the wnba, with Caitlin Clark, ratings were unbelievable. You know, thanks to her, you were building on this. I, I liken it to when Gretzky came to the LA Kings. Then everybody wanted to have a franchise. Then we had expansion in southern states. They're playing hockey in Florida. And Caitlin Clark has added to the expansion. But that's part of the reason why I think having the commissioner on to just explain some things because I still don't know why Caitlin Clark wasn't on a commemorative 30th anniversary poster. But you're going to have Angel Reese on there or Paige Becker's on there. They're, you know, entertaining players, popular players. Does this have have to do with a licensing deal she has elsewhere? I don't know. But it, you know, how would you assess the officiating in the WNBA and then with Caitlin Clark, is she officiated differently? Like, I mean these, these are questions that she knew was that she would have been able to answer. You would have sat down and had a mock interview with your PR department. That's how this happens. But that was the disappointing part because I truly wanted answers to this. And you know, we're finding out that maybe the NBA is stepping in here and maybe playing a larger role than we know. Well, wasn't that the whole thing? Jerry's like, I have this brilliant plan. So the light gets in the opposing player's eyes and they're like, that's great for half the game. But then Your team switches sides. It sounded like he had them installed and he just chose not to use them.

Yeah, The I team's all over the curtain story, Dan. The curtains at AT&T Stadium for the FIFA World Cup. That decision was made by FIFA to use them. They are available for use, but they're not up during the football season. They put them up during concerts and other events if they want to close or open them by who's using them, but they are not. Robin Williams has to be in that top five. I mean, that guy mastered every medium. And of course, with the Open coming up, his Origins of Golf stage routine was fantastic. But any of the fellows who haven't seen it, go back to Mrs. Doubtfire, watch that restaurant scene. That was just comedic gold. With regard to the U, the Open tomorrow starting. And then the other thing I have to say is, you know, I was missing you when you were gone, and I was listening to the Todd cast, and I came up with a great drinking game every time Todd says his little cooler or his snacks or that combination of things, because it's just like, my snacks and my little cooler, and, like, these people are talking over here, and I got my snack. I'm just minding my own business, you know, I think you take a drink every single time I was drunk by the time it was over with.

I was half paying attention. I can only half pay attention because one of my ears is clogged.

Would you rather lose hearing in one ear or sight in one eye? Todd?

I think Paul has a much tougher situation. And mine just a temporary situation.

And Paul never complains.

No. And his situation is a long term thing. My ear will hopefully get better in the next couple.

He was born with one good eye. Yes.

It also helps me the excuse of not being athletic, having one eye. It has nothing to do with running, but it's a great excuse. I think I'd rather have no hearing in one ear because you can compensate.

Yeah. Well, if it's, if it's all the way, like you have no vision or no hearing, obviously taking no hearing is a no brainer. But if you had to do one or the other, I mean, it's kind of nice because Todd's bad ear right now is facing me, so I can just whisper stuff at him and he has no clue.

I'll take one bad ear.

Because you could have someone. You could turn to the other side of your face or you can ask someone to repeat something, which people do all the time, even if they have great hearing because they weren't paying attention or as you get older. But I don't know how you. You can't really repeat a sight. You either saw it or you didn't see it. They can't. Like they could show it to you 50 times. If you can't see it the first time, you're not gonna.

[Dan Patrick]

I did have a friend in college who fell over like a three foot tall fence and hit his head and he lost the hearing in his left ear or no right ear. So we lived together senior year, and his designated seat was all the way in the corner so that his good ear was facing out to everyone. He said it was actually pretty annoying.

[Dan Patrick]

Okay.

[Paulie]

As opposed to loving it.

[Dan Patrick]

He said it wasn't great. Oh, it wasn't great.

[Dylan]

It was not great. He was like, I could have lived without it.

Oh, he could have lived without one ear not working.

No. He could have lived without hitting his head and losing his ear.

To put a bow on this, I had to go to the DMV last week to get a new license. And again, for the third time, I cheated on the driving test by memorizing with my right eye what I had to do with my Eye.

Hey, thanks, Dan. You know, I got to chime in on this NBA nonsense. You know what? It looks like this is conjecture. They want female roller derby because, you know. Hey, hey, hey. People like to see chicks fight. They like that cat fighting, man, that gets eyeballs. Stop gender grading your sport. It's sexist as hell and it's nonsense. Personally, I like watching. I don't watch it very often, but when I watch, like, the college basketball, a female final four, it's a nice game. It can be a nice game if you don't muck it up with, like, a slug fest.

[Dan Patrick]

Well, I think that they officiate differently than the NBA does. I said this. I wanted to say it to the commissioner. It feels like the WNBA allows for more play on moments, whereas the NBA doesn't. But, I mean, it's physical. People didn't realize it was physical. And still until Caitlin Clark came in the league, they had never watched. Now you get new eyeballs and everybody's got an opinion, got an agenda here. It's been physical. Been physical. I have something for you. I have a friend who Has a son who plays travel baseball for five years. And this was before high school. Here's the breakdown of what it cost him. Team fees $16,000 Private hitting coach 24,000 Private catching coach 12,000 out of state tournaments 35,000 Bats 5,000 Gloves 3,000 Catchers gear 4,000 College visits 11,000 grand total $110,000 to play baseball in college. Those are just some of the numbers that you have with some of these parents and these travel teams. Billy in Iowa. Hi, Billy. What's on your mind?

Hi, Dan. Thanks for taking my call. Love watching you on Peacock and seeing all the guys. Got a couple of comments. I always enjoy when you guys talk about funerals and death stuff because it's so interesting. I hope at mine there's plenty of Maker's Mark flowing, good laughs and say, man, that guy was a piece of work. Because that can go a couple different ways.

[Dan Patrick]

All right. Yeah, I'm not going to be around now. I did think about this. I asked my wife this and she said, are you sober? When I, I said this to her, I said, what if we have kind of a wake for me and then we have, you know, it's a pre wake, like everybody comes in and I'm still alive to be able to hear what they have to say. And then she said, are you sober? I said, yeah, I'm just thinking maybe be kind of nice to have people say what they felt about me before I died. Yes.

[Todd]

Why are we so sure? Because no one really comes back from the dead, as far as we know. It explains what they're.

Well, one person did.

Okay, well, other than that, one person, why does it, why does everyone assume that once you're gone, you don't, you can't see or hear or know what's going on? Like what Rory McElroy said, I'm going to be a lot of people. Everyone basically says, I don't know, let them do whatever I'm not going to do.

You think that you're going to be able to listen or see what's going on after you die on Earth?

[Todd]

I would not.

Like if you're 100%, if your wife is going to start dating somebody and you're going to be like weeks after you die?

[Todd]

As long as I have the ability to look away, if I have the ability to see whatever I want afterwards and something like that's going on, I would probably turn the other cheek. I don't need to view that.

There's certain things when somebody says, you know, your dad's probably watching. I hope not. Yes.

Yeah, I think I have no interest in tuning back in. If you get like. If you're like, hey, you get to watch all of the good stuff. All right, sure. But that's not the case.
