the Dan Patrick show on Fox Sports Radio. Final hour on this Meat Friday. Morale is high. We unveiled the Rec Tech Grills and a big hit. We have the Backyard Beast. We have the X Fire Pro and the Bullseye. So we're cooking. Dylan is doing the honors there. We have elk sliders, tuna carpaccio, filet mignon, Oscar style. Did we find out who Oscar is named after with the Academy Awards? Yes, Paulie, I did find out.
Paulie
There was a woman who worked for the Academy Awards. She was like the librarian who kept track of all the history. And when they first made the award, the statue, she said it looked like her uncle Oscar. And it Became a joke in the offices. And that is the assumed reason it's called the Oscar. There's other theories, but that's the best one.
Dan Patrick
Okay, but the sports Emmy, is that after somebody who looks like Emmy? And if that's the case, I'd like to meet Emmy because my sports Emmys look really good. Yes, Paul.
Paulie
There was a nickname for a camera tube back in the day that TV
Dan Patrick
cameras used to use called an Emmy.
Paulie
And the guy who created the Emmy awards kind of played off that. And at first he said it was an Emmy with an I and someone spelled it E. Emmy.
Dan Patrick
But it's a woman. Yeah, Emmy. The statue is. It's a woman.
Paulie
I don't look. I just assume it's a woman.
Dan Patrick
You haven't had your hands.
Paulie
I haven't.
Dan Patrick
No, you have not. This week on Sunday night, it's the Lakers and the Mavs, Rockets, warriors. And the NBA playoffs are coming to NBC. And Peacock. I misspoke. Luca scheduled to have an MRI on his hamstring this morning and got injured last night in a blowout. They lost by 43 to the Thunder. You know, social media immediately reacted saying, why is he in there when you're down by 25? Well, I mean, you're down, what, 25 or 30, and there's 7 minutes and 30 to go in the third quarter. If it's fourth quarter, yes, he should have been out. But third quarter, you know, there's always a chance given the three the way the Lakers have been playing. But, you know, OKC blew him out, and Luca certainly was in pain as he went down. Poll question. Seaton for the final hour of the program is going to be one. Oh, by the way, I didn't get through everything. We have pesto crusted salmon. We have brussels sprouts and glazed carrots. Brussels sprouts, Brussels sprouts. All the recipes courtesy of rec tech. Who has it better than we do? Nobody. Poll question for the final hour of the program.
Paulie
We have many of them up there right now, actually. Most routable team in the final four. Arizona, Connecticut, Illinois or Michigan.
Dan Patrick
Right now, Illinois barely edging out Arizona, then Michigan.
Paulie
UConn is in last.
Dan Patrick
The one from Paulie here.
Paulie
This the price you would pay to see your team in a title game. 200 to 500. 500 to 1000. A thousand plus right now. 200 to 500 is.
Dan Patrick
Got about 58% of that vote.
Paulie
A thousand plus is coming in last year. Who are you rooting for in the women's final four? Let's hear for the girls, UConn, South Carolina, UCLA or Texas? UCLA leading that one, followed by UConn. Interesting that UConn is getting a lot of love in that, considering how dominant they are.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, but I don't think that they're polarizing.
Paulie
Yeah, they're not. They're just.
Dan Patrick
I mean, they're just a great team.
Paulie
And then I got one more here. Would you rather coach basketball in the
Dan Patrick
Big 12 or the accurate ACC has
Paulie
58% of that vote?
Dan Patrick
Well, that. That's because our audience is older and they're. They're relying on history there. Yeah, I get that. Yeah. Let's see. So the women's Final Four tonight. South Carolina, Yukon, Texas, ucla. Men's Final Four Saturday, Illinois, Yukon, Michigan, Arizona. And those are one and a half point spreads. Haven't really changed much. All right, we'll get some phone calls here. Louis Riddick from the Mothership who was at Fernando Mendoza's Pro day. He'll join us coming up as well. And let me see, anything else? You know, this was a story a little bit yesterday, but it, I think, deserves to be mentioned. Stefan Gilmore retired, and he was a former defensive player of the year as a defensive back, a Cornerback, I think 20, 19. I don't know if he's a Hall of Famer. He played 13 years. He won one Super Bowl. He went to five Pro Bowls, two All Pros, 32 career interceptions. That's pretty good. Pretty good. I don't know how that stacks up with other cornerbacks. Yes, Marvin.
Paulie
Yeah, it seems like for a while there was like a best cornerback on earth talk. Like, Richard Sherman was unbelievable for a while. Josh Norman, Stefan Gilmore. I'm not sure if those guys primes. Not Richard Sherman, but those guys primes were long enough to warrant like a Hall of Fame induction.
Dan Patrick
Well, Jarell Rivas kind of set the standard or the modern standard. Dion as well. I mean, you can go back in the 60s and 70s, and those guys got a lot of interceptions. But I always said, hey, Dion's numbers, where you go, man? He only had X number of interceptions. I'm like, you can't get interceptions if you're. They're not throwing your way. It's like, it's weird. The guy who has, you know, a lot of interceptions, it's like, well, how'd you get that? Because they were throwing your way unless you're playing free safety. So whatever Ed Reed got, that's because he was a ball hawk. Yeah, Paulie.
Paulie
Yeah, I saw an interview with Troy Aikman just the Other day. And he said he knows for sure their game plan when they face Dion was find where he is and now call an audible to go the other side of the field. Darrell Rivas was four time first team all pro. That's. That gets you right in.
Dan Patrick
Yeah. Otto in la. Good morning, Otto. What's on your mind today? Good morning, guys.
Paulie
I just wanted to say thank you for on Good Friday, resurrecting my pain
Dan Patrick
as a Falcon fan with 20x3 references. Thank you. And a quick story.
Paulie
I don't know if you guys saw the Fox Sports promos with Tom Brady. There's a guy that was in the office getting on everybody's nerves, talking scat. That was me.
Dan Patrick
I was in that Fox Sports commercial playing Cornell, talking football to Compass co workers. Oh, awesome. Oh, that's great. Well, congrats on that, Otto. Yeah. We were talking about the biggest choke jobs of the 21st century. And it was. We were quick to say, number one, Atlanta choking against the Falcons. You had the Yankees and the ALCS against the Red Sox. That is still such a strange moment. When I was doing SportsCenter. And I just remember then Paulie was there, and I just remember Terry Francona, he almost came across his. This says spring training game. He was available, you know. Right. You know, they're down 3 0. And I said, hey, I'm gonna be doing the six o' clock sports Center. Paulie, once you ask Terry Francona if he wants to join us, Paul. And not thinking that, of course he's. And he goes, yeah, yeah, he's. He'll do it. So you're down three zero. And he's like, you know, he came over. So it was 3:1. I said, Paul, he wants you to see if Terry Frank wants to join us.
Paulie
Walked him onto the set.
Dan Patrick
Yes.
Paulie
That was the weirdest week because the papers in Boston were just crucifying the no show by the Red Sox in 04. I mean, they were after game three. It was. This is embarrassing. And remember when they won the game four, and they were like, oh, false hope. They're giving us false hope in Boston.
Dan Patrick
Yeah. Dan Shaughnessy was crushing the Red Sox back then, but big poppy homers and extra innings. And I remember I would see Spike Lee down the first baseline and he would say to. So Red sox win. It's 3:1. And then I see Spike Lee and he goes, who do you like? I said, I like the Red Sox. And then next game I see him, he goes, who do you like? I said, I like the Red Sox. And he'd be like, damn, I saw him before game seven. And he, I said, you're not going to ask me who I like? He goes, no, I know who you like. And I wasn't rooting for anybody. I mean, I, I got content out of that. I was. Seven games, I was crazy, magical, wild, shilling heroes, you know, Rivera on the mound, Dave Roberts steals a base, Bill Miller drives him. I mean, you're just watching a piece of history. And when I think back on 40 years doing this, there's so many of those moments. Because in the moment when I'm there at Augusta, watching Tiger win his first and you know, it, it hits you that I just saw history. But history is only a couple of minutes old. As he's walking, you know, with his dad, they're walking off the court and I'm going to that it's history. And there have been a lot of those moments when, when Greg Norman is falling apart on the back nine at Augusta, I realize I'm watching something that will be talked about for decades, if not longer. You know, the Falcons game, I wasn't at that game. But you're watching history unfold and you're going, oh, my God. Because, you know, I grew up on the history of the sport or moments that were taking place, but I wasn't covering it. Now, when you're able to cover these events in the last 40 years, that's when it hits you of, wow, you're part of that. Or you were there for that, you witnessed that. That's real. And I think that's part of the beauty of what we're able to do. You get to cover things, you get to be at things, you get to witness things. And there. That's why I always say, just when you think you've seen it all, you haven't. And you never say a team doesn't have a chance. Never, never. I mean, Duke, Yukon, classic example, where you're going, you're down 19, they're playing great, it's over, and then it's not. And then it's a jumper. And then it's like, what just happened? Indiana football, in my lifetime, I never could have fathom that Indiana could win a national championship. First of all, they wouldn't get through Ohio State and Michigan. And then you're watching this and I'm thinking, the U. I could see where they'd be playing for a national title. They've been there. Indiana, Indiana was the homecoming game. Like, I think I always thought schools were trying to have homecoming, like the first week so everybody could schedule Indiana football. But man, oh, man, just when you think you've seen everything, you haven't. Yes, Marv.
Paulie
After the show, NFL Network went to a live shot of Indiana pro day. And Paulie and I look at each other like, did you ever think in your lifetime that you would see them go live to Indiana pro day, let alone them win a national. Let alone them win the Big Ten in football?
Dan Patrick
So we get done with our show, and then Sports center is on, and then Paulie and Marv go, oh, my God. And so I turned around and I go, what? And I go, they're going to the Indiana pro day. Did you ever think they'd be going to the Indiana pro day? I said, no, I did not. Yeah, Paulie, I still don't believe Indiana
Paulie
won the national title.
Dan Patrick
Oh, I still can't believe it happened. I thought you were going to say, I still don't believe they went to the Indiana pro.
Paulie
They opened up the broadcast. We're at the home of the Heisman trophy winner and the national champion Indiana Hoosiers.
Dan Patrick
Wow. Wow. Brian in Florida. Hi, Brian. What's on your mind today? Too loud there, Brian. Keith in Virginia. Hi, Keith. What's on your mind?
Paulie
Hey, Dan, how you doing? Six one and a soft 240. I like to nominate myself for the biggest sports debacle. Allow my wife to take over my man cave.
Dan Patrick
So, 21st century. How's it going, Keith?
Paulie
It's not going good, Dan.
Dan Patrick
It's not going good.
Paulie
I've. I've said, I've sought therapy.
Dan Patrick
How can I help you? How can I help you kind of get back your manhood? Maybe you can do the show from
Paulie
my garage and have a audience, live audience. And give reasons why men should have
Dan Patrick
their man cave not taken over by their wives. Maybe we can print up a T shirt or something. Would your wife let me do the show from your garage? No. But anyway, Keith, man, good luck. Yeah, Seaton.
Paulie
Just tell her the guys are coming over. It just happens to be a crew
Dan Patrick
of, you know, 12 of us bringing a radio, TV show. Yes. Yeah.
Paulie
The guys coming over.
Dan Patrick
Yeah. I'm lucky, though. I have a space in the basement. I have a event, you know, a fan smoking cigars, and nobody comes down there, so I get to go there and I have my little space and it's awesome. It's usually whenever we have the Christmas party, that's the one place that is packed by the end of the night. Everybody's in there drinking and smoking cigars. But I Got the exhaust fan there for my cigars. You know, my little man cave. I'm good. But then, as my wife says, you have a man cave. Okay. And I do. This is my man cave. But, you know, I do need a little area. This is work, hun. This right here is work. Yeah. When I'm at home relaxing, that's different. So when I should be able to retreat to my man cave. Yes.
Paulie
When you want to sit and watch movies 10 minutes at a time. You don't want to do that here. You want to do that in the comfort of your own home.
Dan Patrick
If you want to watch some G

league basketball, you should be allowed to.
Dan Patrick
I should be.
Paulie
Do it at your house, damn it.
Dan Patrick
I should be. If I want to watch the Sacramento Kings on a Saturday night, I'll watch it there. By the way, I, you know, I can't sit and watch anything. So my wife and my daughters and they had that 28 years later. And, you know, I would start watching and then I would go and, you know, into my smoking area and then I'd come back and I'd go back and come back and come back and then my wife goes, just come back to the end of the movie. Okay? I said, okay. And then the end of the movie is crazy with Ray finds crazy wild. And I went, I'll be damned. Did he win? Did he get nominated for an Academy Award? She goes, I don't, I don't know if they nominate people in zombie apocalypse movies. Yes.
Paulie
That's one of the things that made Sinners so crazy is that that's not really a zombie movie. I don't think that's more of like a vampire movie maybe, but they don't
Dan Patrick
get those types of gory, you know,
Paulie
eating flesh type movies don't really get nominated for things. I don't wonder why.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, well, there's, there's some scenes in 28 Years later where I hope you're not having spaghetti.
Paulie
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
Just saying, like, wow, a little too much marinara sauce on that guy. Let's take a break. Lewis Riddick, our buddy from the mothership, will join us coming up next year. Dan Patrick show.

Lewis Riddick of the Mothership Former front office player, director of pro personnel with a couple of teams. He was at the pro day for Fernando Mendoza. If you had a question for Mendoza, was it answered at his pro day?
Paulie
Yeah, look, I don't know if I had a whole lot of questions for him as far as from a physical skills perspective. I think I wanted to see just what his body looked like in person. I just wanted to see how he moved in person. He's a lot bigger now than he was during the season. That's the first thing that jumped out to me. To me, Dan, he is put together now. He has hit the weight room. He has got a great looking lower body, big broad shoulders, big forearms. But I mean he's put together. He looks the part of a franchise quarterback as far as how you would sculpt him and make him look okay. And for all the people who now go, well, we don't really care. BS you do care. Remember when Jared Goff was number one overall pick and all we talked about was the fact that his lower half looked like he would be broken in half with like because he had toothpick calves, because we Thought, oh, he won't be able to withstand, you know, get hit. It all matters. The thing I really like about him too is his presence, his command, his leadership skills, style, the way in which people respond to him when he's around them, the way in which the players gravitate towards him, listen to him, take his instruction, work with him. Like the workout was called, conducted by him. I know I put on social media the fact that I had never seen, and I'd been to pro days for a long time, I've never seen a quarterback take charge of a pro day in the way in which he did. Meaning. And I was standing right next to John Spytech, the GM of the Raiders when this was happening. And John and I scouted together in Philly and I said, john, have you ever seen a quarterback do this? He's like, no. And what I'm talking about is the fact that before every route that was run, Fernando announced who the guy was and what route. And he, and he would look at the, that the receiver and he would look back at him, he would tell him, you know, so Omar Cooper, speed out. Omar Cooper, bench route. Omar Cooper, you know, Elijah Surat, seven route. He was really trying to highlight his guys and make sure people understood this is who he is, this is what he's about to run. And we're about to kind of like show you the kind of communication that we've had with why we played the way we did this past year. And I want you guys to really focus on the fact that this is who this guy is so you can really dial in on his skill set. And he wasn't doing it to kind of like shine light on himself, although it did shine light on him. He was trying to highlight his guys and see, we all at this time of year kind of forget and don't put enough emphasis on football and personal character and leadership because we become enamored with, well, can he throw the football like Mahomes? Can he throw it like Josh Allen? And how many times do we really need a quarterback to throw the football like Patrick, meaning off schedule, you know, rolling left, throwing back. We just need a guy to be able to make great decisions, command the huddle, command his team, have mental stamina, physical stamina, and put the ball in the end zone like Fernando did 41 times throwing the football this past year and leading this team to an undefeated season. He, for me, he sewed it up for me as far as, yeah, this is a franchise caliber quarterback. This is a guy who I would want leading the charge for me, if I was running a football team, he came into Indiana, took Coach Signetti's direction, brought together a whole bunch of new players and got him on the same pace to the point where they go and have an undefeated season and whip every top program in the country. I have no questions. None. Zero.
Dan Patrick
You okay with the Raiders bringing in Kirk Cousins?
Paulie
Yes. The number two quarterback. The quarterback room overall is probably the most important job that a general manager and a coaching staff in a football organization has in terms of their responsibility for getting that right. The number two quarterback has to be a sounding board for the number one quarterback. And Kirk's going to start off as the number one quarterback. And then that relationship between the number one and the number two, however it plays out is as important as the relationship between the quarterback and the head coach, the quarterback in the quarterback coach, the quarterback and the play caller. However that is all configured. That relationship is critical. I've been in organizations where the number two quarterback added basically no value to the number one guy. And at some point in time, it takes a toll. And it's something that is a detriment to the development and the performance of the number one qb. Kirk is a pros pro. We've known that his entire career. He's a guy who's relied on his mastery of the game, mastery of that offense that they're going to be running in in Vegas in particular. And he's relied on his ability to anticipate, throw with accuracy and have competitive stamina to the tune of he's made a gazillion dollars off of it. A gazillion. And he isn't the guy who's going to wow you. Kirk. Kirk Cousins for sure, when you see him in person, is not going to wow you by his physical stature. He's just not. And I think that relationship between him and Fernando, I think they're made perfectly for one another in terms of being able to coexist, really help one another. However, the depth chart plays itself out and in what time it plays itself out to where it's going to be beneficial to them both. I think John made a very smart move in doing that. I think Clint made a very smart move that being Kubiak and doing that. And I think it's going to pay dividends for sure.
Dan Patrick
Down the road, talking to Louis Riddick, ESPN NFL college football analyst, where would Cam Ward go in this draft?
Paulie
He would be. I mean, he'd be right up there in contention for still the number one overall pick. Who would you Take this year. Yeah, and you know what? It would be a style thing. Okay, so. So Cam played the game much differently than Fernando. Right. Camp Cam was the guy who could very much so make the off schedule plays, throw from different platforms, but had competitive stamina, has a high degree of football intellect and football intelligence, has a rocket forearm. All those things. It's just. It's just a matter of, okay, well, which. Which one are you looking for? What. What do you want? What do you think is more a fit for what you want? Both in terms of the way he plays the game and the kind of person that he is. Which one do you feel like you're more comfortable with? So it would still be one of those conversations where you would sit there and go, okay, this guy best fits us more so than this guy. Cam's legit. Cam just needs to continue. And coach Salah is going to have to wind up and Brian Dabel are going to have to wind up really getting everything situated around him, getting him on the right page, getting him comfortable in this offense to where he can really shine like Shannon Dawson had him shine down there in Miami. And he will. He will. I have no doubt that Cam is going to have a breakout type of season as they continue to build that thing out around him, but they're two totally different players, and really, it's just a matter of taste. Which one do you want?
Dan Patrick
Why is it we have a real disparity between. Ty Simpson is a first round pick, maybe better than Fernando Mendoza. I know. Orlovsky, you think highly of Ty Simpson.
Paulie
I do.
Dan Patrick
And then you have other people, including, you know, an NFL scout I spoke to last night who said, I don't have a first round grade on him, but that doesn't mean he won't go in the first round. Why is there such a wide disparity of opinions on him?
Paulie
Because we're human beings. And you can show human beings the same tape, the same, you know, four or five games, the same throw, and they would look, look at it, and two people would vary wide, wildly and widely in terms of what they just saw. People see things differently. Now, there are some objective statistics that people won't move off of that they feel as though do not project a high level of performance for Ty Simpson. Number one is height. His weight, his playing experience, how the season they believe was uneven for him. Those are objective things. You know, those are objective things. His height, his weight, his, you know, his. His hand size, his statistics, his. His playing experience. Those are all objective things that you can Measure. All right. Then there's the subjective realm that you have to move into and the, that really does affect the projection. And some people aren't comfortable going there. They really aren't. They just want to look at, look, show me the data and show me what data usually leads to projecting a high level of success and what doesn't. Well, there's too many data points that say that this guy is not going to become a franchise caliber quarterback. And they won't move off of it. They just won't. But if you watch regular season versus Georgia on the road, regular season versus Missouri, on the road, in the playoffs, versus Oklahoma, down 17 points and the throws that he made for to bring that football team back, I would look at that same person who said, hey, you know what, I don't care. His height, his weight and his playing experience says he isn't going to be very good. I'm going to, I'm going to say to them, well, you explained to me this whole shot in Cover 2 against a Georgia football team on the road in Athens. You tell me if that projects to the NFL. Tell me if this seven step play action pass that he throws on the money over the movie to Jeremy Bernard, basically having to blindly throw this ball and trust that he's going to be there. You tell me if that projects to the NFL, because I can tell you this, there's a lot of quarterbacks in the NFL right now who can't do that. And he's doing it over and over and over again against high level competition. What more do you want? What more do you want? What more do you want him to do? So I get that the resume isn't that extensive. I get that. I would like that you would like your quarterback to be 6, 4, 6, 5. I get that. And then you have Fernando, right? Who is that? And they say, oh, you know what? But he isn't quite athletic enough. He can't really do what Zach Wilson did in his pro day. He can't roll left and throw right 60 yards down the field. It's like, well, damn. Well, what do you want then? What is it that you want? You want Josh Allen? You want the finished Josh Allen, not the Josh Allen who came out of school. Many people thought, I don't really know what this guy's going to be. You want the current version of Patrick Mahomes, right? Well, who the hell doesn't? I will tell you this. When Peyton came out, there's another comparison. I'm just gonna hold. I'm gonna hold this One in my pocket until draft night. But I played against a guy who reminds me of Fernando Mendoza and he was a Pro bowl quarterback and he was really, really, really, really highly drafted who had great decision making, great accuracy, great leadership skills. Isn't that what the. Isn't that what the position is about? And ultimately, isn't it about winning? I'm sitting here, I pull out, I pull out my book here. Where did it go, man? Oh, here it is. So I'm sitting there going, I need to go back to the football bible
Dan Patrick
here with Bill Walsh.
Paulie
That's right. Finding the winning edge to talk about.
Dan Patrick
Are you saying Mendoza reminds you of Peyton Manning?
Paulie
That football horsepower, that mental horsepower that he has, that leadership that he has, that commitment, that like unwavering commitment to the game? Yeah. Those makeup things remind me of those kind of great players. It does. Fernando has. Fernando has a stronger arm than what Peyton Manning had. And have Mel Kuiper tell you stories about how Peyton Manning, how when he came out in the draft and they were comparing him to Ryan Leaf, how some people thought, this guy can't even throw the ball, wobbles all over the place. He can't throw a tight spiral. Fernando Mendoza can throw a tight spiral. I watched it. I was standing right there, five feet away from him. He can fire that thing. No, he doesn't run around like Jaden Daniels. He can't make the off schedule plays like Caleb Williams. But I'll tell you what he can do. He can go into an organization, into a program, galvanize an entire football team, level up everyone around him because of his football intellect and his. In his competitive stamina. He can come back after getting his face knocked off, look against Ohio State in the Big Ten championship, and then come back and rip your heart out. You can make big time runs when he needs to, like he did against Miami. And he could throw 41 touchdowns and touch every part of the field. If that's what you want in your quarterback, you should probably draft Fernando Mendoza.
Dan Patrick
I like you getting fired up here in April.
Paulie
That's because you know what, this conversation about quarterback, I mean, I love it. I'm passionate about it. I really am. Winning requires more than just being able to throw the football 70 yards down the field at court. And we know this. But at this time of year, every year, we get so drunk on the traits that we forget about the intangible part of the game that is really where people separate themselves. And that's where this young man is going to separate himself. I truly do believe that especially after sitting there and talking to him, looking at him in the face, watching him interact with his guys, listening to Coach Signetti. Sit there right next to me and talk to me about this. I'm sold. I take my chances.
Dan Patrick
Great to talk to you. We'll see you in Pittsburgh.
Paulie
Absolutely. Can't wait.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, we'll have you stop by if you get an opportunity. We'll be there.
Paulie
Hey, man, I will make the opportunity. You know that.
Dan Patrick
Okay.
Paulie
I love talking to you, Dan. I appreciate you.
Dan Patrick
Thank you. Louis Lewis Riddick of the Mothership. NFL college football analyst Todd. I get credit for booking. I knew that was coming. Derek in Tennessee. Good morning, Derek. Thanks for holding. What do you have for me today? Howdy. First time caller. A 510. That's felt 205.
Paulie
Yeah, I just wanted to throw a name in the pod for the Vegas team.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, it's kind of a two parter. How about the Las Vegas vices? Or if you like alliteration, you go with the Vegas vices. Vegas vices. All right, little alliteration there. And we'll put that into the plus column here. Courtney in Oregon. Hey, Courtney, what's on your mind?
Paulie
First time, long time. 57130.

It's interesting because most of Oregon is in the Pacific time zone except for one tiny little area that's in mountain
Dan Patrick
and that's where Courtney is.
Paulie
Apparently that's where Courtney's from.
Dan Patrick
Courtney, where are you located in Oregon? I am right on the Idaho border
Paulie
along the Snake river in Ontario.
Dan Patrick
We're about an hour west of Boise. Okay. Yes, Paulie, it's called Malheur county in
Paulie
Oregon and it's mountain time zone.
Dan Patrick
Yes.
Paulie
Sounds like there's a lot of traffic out that way. I bet
Dan Patrick
there's a lot of traffic out there. How many, how many stoplights do you think they got out there? I grew up in my town. We were known as a village. So I grew up in a village and we had two traffic lights and then, you know, eventually became, you know, like a village, a town. Then it became a city. And now it, you know, it's overpopulated.
Paulie
It's not a village now for sure.
Dan Patrick
No, it's not. No. But we had two traffic lights in there and now you go back and it's a whole different place. Take a break here. Last call for phone calls. What we learned. What's in store for Monday? It's a meat Friday. Come on out to the grilling area. If you're watching on Peacock or NBC Sports Network, we're back after this.

I'm actually going to give it to Mendoza because he had a great pro day listening to Lewis Riddick, had cousins coming in to help be have some
Dan Patrick
tutelage involved and maybe less pressure if he may not have to start week one. I think things are looking up for Mendoza.

Seton I'm gonna say the MLB Competition Committee. I'm assuming that's who would have pushed for ABs over the years that they finally got it into Major League Baseball. Okay, and at least the start of it was a ton of fun.

I was riding such a high from

that March that we had, and then
Paulie
I was so excited for the game
Dan Patrick
last night and it all came crashing down.
Paulie
Luckily it was my wife's birthday, so I wasn't watching the game. But I'm just.
Dan Patrick
I'm just worried.
Paulie
Are we just destined to be first round losers again?
Dan Patrick
Yeah, that was tough to watch. I mean, I. I kind of go up and down on, you know, my expectations for the Lakers. It's like, okay, beginning of the year, all right? And then all of a sudden, now. And then all of a sudden it's like, okay. And then all of a sudden it goes back down. Then all of a sudden it goes back up and you're like, all right, look at Luca. And then here we go on the downward slide towards the end of the regular season. Yes, Marv.
Paulie
The Thunder showed the Lakers that there are levels to this. The Lakers are a second tier team in the Western Conference. Like, you know what? Best case scenario, they might make the conference finals.
Dan Patrick
Best case scenario.
Paulie
But they're not beating the Thunder or the Spurs.
Dan Patrick
Rhonda in Texas. Hi, Rhonda. Welcome back. Hey, Dan. Thank you. Quick comment about the 21st century. Top collapses.
Paulie
I'm wondering.
Dan Patrick
I'm wondering if you remember a detail about the Texas Rangers. World Series, Game six, Rangers leading, bottom of the ninth, two out, two strikes, when a Dallas news station mistakenly texts out with a picture to its followers. The Texas Rangers have won the World Series. Watch coverage on our channel. Oh, that's great. Great call, Rhonda. Thank you. That's better than these news stations when they say somebody's died, you imagine, I think this happened to Joe DiMaggio. Joe DiMaggio was watching TV and there was a report that came up that Joe DiMaggio had died. So you're watching your. Your own death, you know, your. Your eulogy and Weird.
Paulie
Yes, Todd. One thing I heard that was worse than that was when a reporter once said he survived by his wife and two children. He was 63 degrees.
Dan Patrick
Wasn't there one where somebody died and they were unavailable for comment.
Paulie
We tried to reach them, but he was unavailable.
Dan Patrick
Unavailable for comment. Yes.
Paulie
It was January 99. NBC News had a scroll that Joe DiMaggio had died. It was during Dateline. He was actually watching the show with his lawyer and agent. And they called NBC and said, I'm
Dan Patrick
still alone this day in sports history. Paul.
Paulie
See, and I hate to do this, but 30.
Dan Patrick
No, here's why. You know what?
Paulie
Here's why. 37 years ago today, Seton hall lost the NCAA title to Michigan. And the reason I bring it up is I'm watching it back. That is one of the worst phantom foul calls I've ever seen. Ramil Robinson driving was untouched and a foul call sent at the over. John Clocker do that. That is a horrible seen. Hall wins it, probably.
Dan Patrick
Let's see, on this date, 2006, Joe Kim Noah had seven block shots, leading Florida to its first title, dominating UCLA.
Paulie
And
Dan Patrick
Greg Popovich in 2019, gets two technicals and is ejected 63 seconds into the spurs game against Denver. The fastest ejection in NBA history. Stat of the day. Stat of the day. Stat of the day. Stat of the day. Here, here, here.
Paulie
Here comes that.
Dan Patrick
What? Stat of the day. I wouldn't put it past Popovich to have gotten ejected on purpose there. 63 seconds in. Something must have happened leading up to the game where you're still angry about something and you're going to take it out on somebody. Let's see if anybody learned anything on the program. Todd, I'll start with you. Did you learn anything? I did.
Paulie

Host: Dan Patrick
Theme: The experience of witnessing sports history, current NCAA and NFL stories, and an in-depth interview with analyst Louis Riddick about quarterbacks and leadership.
This episode centers around the thrill and gravity of witnessing significant sports history—whether as a journalist, fan, or participant. Dan and the crew reflect on legendary moments they've covered, dissect the current NCAA Final Four matchups, discuss historical sports heartbreaks, and dive deep into the NFL quarterback draft process with guest Louis Riddick. Lively football debates, fan call-ins, and the authentic camaraderie of “Meat Friday” infuse humor and warmth throughout.
Live poll updates:
Dan previews both Men's & Women's Final Four matchups and notes tightly set point spreads.
On the Red Sox-Yankees ALCS:
“You’re just watching a piece of history. And when I think back on 40 years doing this, there’s so many of those moments...That’s why I always say, just when you think you've seen it all, you haven't.” – Dan Patrick [10:36, 12:53]
On Fernando Mendoza’s Leadership:
“He was conducting the workout. I’ve never seen a quarterback take charge of a pro day the way he did...He was trying to highlight his guys.” – Louis Riddick [24:13]
On NFL QB Draft Scouting:
“People see the same tape and have wildly different takes. Some just won’t move off the data...but what more do you want him to do?” – Louis Riddick [30:24–33:20]
On Intangibles in Quarterbacks:
“Winning requires more than just being able to throw the football 70 yards...We get so drunk on the traits, but the intangible part is where people separate themselves.” – Louis Riddick [35:33]
Dan’s Rule of Sports Surprises:
“Never say a team doesn’t have a chance. Never, never.” – Dan Patrick [12:53]
The show maintains Dan Patrick’s signature mix of insightful sports perspective, self-deprecating humor, inside anecdotes, and audience engagement. The banter is relaxed yet knowledgeable, offering both sharp analysis and a welcoming clubhouse vibe.
By weaving together memories of sports history, inside access to the NFL Draft mindset, candid fan interactions, and laughs about domestic life and sports heartbreaks, this episode exemplifies what makes Dan Patrick’s show beloved. The discussion with Louis Riddick alone offers a “masterclass” in evaluating what really matters in a franchise quarterback, while audience calls and team banter make it feel like you’re right there in the room, getting smarter and smiling along with some of the best in sports media.
