Rich Davis
Everyone's invited. We have like a whole big section this. It's going to be our biggest Cavino in Rich crowd yet. So we'd love to see you there. Let's do it. Let's make it happen. Danny G, you excited about this?
Danny G
Oh man, yeah. I'm looking forward to this weekend. I heard Spotty has room for about 500 more listeners.
Steve Covino
Oh yeah, yeah.
Rich Davis
No, actually, yeah, it's like a good problem. Spot our video guy who's running the whole thing. He's like, God, it's like too many RSVPs. I'm like, there's no such thing as too many RSVPs to a big event.
Steve Covino
Those are first world radio problems. Like the Yankees trying to figure out where are we going to fit Jean Carlos Stanton with all these other big bats that we have to get in the lineup somehow. These are great problems. And if you have great problems, enjoy that. Lean into it.
Rich Davis
It'll work itself out. Much like the Mets starting pitching, where it's like, how are we going to fit these guys in? Don't worry, someone will get hurt. Someone will start stinking like Gabe Lincoln. Don't worry.
Steve Covino
Balances out.
Rich Davis
It all works out in the wash, as they say.
Steve Covino
That's right. Now on today's show, we will talk some Giancarlo, but more Shohei because he also makes his return tonight. Yep, that's the big story. Is it the biggest story? I think it might be. Plus Joey Chestnut, another guy making a return.
Rich Davis
Talk about the biggest story. He's going to join us live on the show. We got the hot dog eating champ himself. The announcement was made today. His big return.
Steve Covino
Why do you think I said schwing swing in the beginning of the show?
Rich Davis
Oh, you're talking about his hot dog. Okay.
Steve Covino
I'm just so excited about Joey Chestnut.
Rich Davis
Well, he returns to the Nathan's hot dog eating contest, Fourth of July. So we'll get a fun little.
Steve Covino
Honestly, it is big news.
Rich Davis
Check in.
Steve Covino
It hasn't been the same with Adam. You need that. It's like peanut butter and jelly. You need Joey Chestnut to complete the festivities and we'll talk about it. Plus, last one standing, the game that sweeping the nation. We'll do some trivia here on the show, give away some prizes, but might as well get into it right off the bat. As they say, pun intended, Shohei style.
Rich Davis
I'm going to roll with your Shohei. But you brought up Joey Chestnut and we're going to have him on in about an hour. So I have to ask, this being that you did give shout outs and props to Caitlin Clark. Welcome to the Clark side.
Steve Covino
I mean, that's what Sam's T shirt says.
Rich Davis
Oh, my God, that is a cool shirt. Thank you.
Danny G
Second time wearing it.
Rich Davis
I just. The first time, I probably just thought you were a Star wars nerd. It is in that same vein.
Steve Covino
I thought you just like Clark bars.
Rich Davis
What's more miserable, Clark Griswold. What's more miserable, the WNBA without Caitlin Clark or hot dog eating without Joey Chestnut. It's sort of comparable, right? I mean, like, you're talking about taking the face of it.
Steve Covino
Cereal with no milk.
Rich Davis
Yeah. I mean, is there.
Danny G
Just use some water.
Rich Davis
I can't think of a third comparable.
Steve Covino
Ham without the burger.
Rich Davis
A hot dog eating contest when you take Chestnut out of it. Or the wnba. You saw what happened with the ratings and ticket sales when she was gone.
Steve Covino
For a Roseanne without Roseanne, that was the weakest.
Rich Davis
That stupid ass show continued for years. Years.
Steve Covino
This ain't Roseanne without Roseanne. Connors, get out of my face.
Rich Davis
So wait, is there a show that. Oh, the Office without Steve Carell.
Steve Covino
Right. Yeah.
Danny G
Two and a Half Men without Charlie Sheen.
Steve Covino
I'm gonna have to go wnba, because it went from everybody talking about it, everybody tuned in. It's really making a push. Cam Newton saying it's bigger than baseball are gonna be like, yeah, okay, if you revolve it around one person. Because when she's not playing, no one's really talking about it the same way. It wasn't the same banter. And as soon as she came back. Lighten it up. Circus shots, by the way. And everyone, once again, man, she's really different.
Danny G
Well, yeah, but there were still a few other players people were following that. I saw clips of while she was out with. Without Nate, without Chestnut being at Nathan's, we didn't even tune in at all.
Rich Davis
I can't tell you who.
Danny G
We didn't even know who won without him.
Rich Davis
So that's a good question. Nathan's without Chestnut or WNBA without Caitlin Clark, you know? Yes, some NBA players. Because we're going to Talk about the NBA Finals Game 5 tonight. There's people saying, without Woj, there's like. I mean, no offense to shams, but isn't there. Aren't there people that are saying it's just not the same with the breaking news, new Woj bombs.
Steve Covino
I just put a lot more credibility into the WNBA than I do into hot dog eating. But it is an American pastime. And Danny G. Does make a good point. It really was nothing without Joey Chestnut.
Danny G
Like, it was completely off our radar.
Steve Covino
Yeah.
Danny G
Nathan Bertoletti, the defending champion, 2024.
Rich Davis
His name is even Nathan. And we never even went, oh, that's coincidental because I'm sorry.
Danny G
No, no, no. That. No, I just. I don't know. His name's Patrick. I don't know why I said Nathan, because I was thinking of Nathan's. Patrick Bertoletti.
Steve Covino
I'm sorry, but he ate 58.
Rich Davis
You know what? I'm going to write that down. I'm going to ask you the dude.
Danny G
That wears the Red Sox hat.
Rich Davis
I'm going to. I'm going to ask Joey Chestnut if he's more important than Caitlin Clark. Let me write that down.
Steve Covino
You more.
Rich Davis
Well, I heard the.
Steve Covino
I heard the Red Sox traded Devers for Bertoletti. Is that all right?
Rich Davis
So we'll get to Joey Chestnut. We're going to get to NBA Finals game five tonight. And I'm sure Elias at the sports bureau probably has some stat about whoever wins game five wins such and such percentage of the NBA Finals. So we'll break down a little bit of what we're going to watch tonight. But are you watching that tonight or is there a bigger story trumping jumping the NBA Finals Game 5?
Steve Covino
Well, it's Shohei's return.
Rich Davis
Shohei Ohtani.
Steve Covino
I think everything takes a backseat to Shohei tonight. It's his first pitching appearance since August 23, 2023. Please don't get hurt.
Danny G
Please don't get hurt.
Steve Covino
And that's the risk you're taking. But life's a risk car now. And I don't know if it's worth it, but you heard Dan Byers updates. They're saying one to two winnings. I don't know if there's a pitch count in mind, but one to two innings, I'm sure everyone's closely going to watch, and everyone's going to be closely watching on TV as well. You know, I think that everybody's tuning into this because you want to see if he brings the juice, what he's about his first game pitching as a Dodger, all of a sudden, it's the hottest ticket to get. So we got that announcement, I mean, yesterday, right? Wasn't he yesterday? Like, damn, Shohei's going to pitch just like that. We've been seeing him warm up, obviously, since. But I think even an NBA Game 5 where it's all tied up and you got young superstars playing big takes a back seat to Shohei Ohtani. That's how massive he is, and that's how great he is for baseball.
Rich Davis
I would have told you there's no way in the world a baseball story in June would be more on a lot of people's radar than the NBA Finals Game 5 when it's tied up to a piece.
Steve Covino
Yeah. People are also supposed to be excited that Giancarlo Stanton is coming back after all the elbow problems. His first game in over 70 games. He's missed the Entire season. And you remember the postseason he had last year? He played big.
Rich Davis
Does your girlfriend like him too?
Steve Covino
I mean, I think all women like him.
Rich Davis
Is the best butt in baseball.
Steve Covino
Your wife probably likes him too. She just doesn't tell you. But he's the oldest 35 year old in baseball. 429 home runs. He had 27 dongs last year and he played big in the postseason. He makes his return to the already stacked Yankees lineup and honestly, aside from me, no one gives a diddly squat. And I get it because Shohei Ohtani makes his return against the Padres.
Rich Davis
So ask yourself this about Shohei. There's too many questions. I'm gonna give you five. Number one, Is it bigger than the NBA Finals? Game five is a crucial game five in the NBA. Taking a backseat to the return of the biggest star in baseball. Returning to the mound in a, you know, relatively meaningless June.
Steve Covino
We'll take temperature tonight. We'll see all the highlights. You'll see social media, you'll see what's trending and it's going to be Shohei because of his worldwide dominance and how people love the guy and how big he is for baseball and for the Dodgers and. And to see him become the two way player that everyone was pumped for him to be and how pumped we were to see as a Dodger. It all starts tonight. Remember, he won with the Dodgers. He played his ass off last year, but we never seen him on the mount as a Dodger yet. So think of the greatness he brought as a hitter to the Dodgers. Can he bring that same greatness as a pitcher?
Rich Davis
That's ridiculous. MVP greatness, World Series champion greatness.
Steve Covino
That's what I mean. So like, all right, let's see what he has now. So it absolutely takes precedence over a game five, which sounds ridiculous, but that's just my prediction. That's my feeling. Because I mean we've already had a competitive series so far it's tied at 2. And I mean, I don't think everyone's that pumped about it. We are. It's been a great series. This is where stars are born. This is where legacies begin and dynasties begin. I get it.
Rich Davis
I've never claimed to be a die hard NBA fan. So I'll tell you straight up, honest, I'm way more excited to see Shohei take the mound tonight.
Steve Covino
I was a little fired down that it's like a two inning maximum, but that's expected. Yeah, I mean, but I thought maybe they'd give him, depending on how he pitched a Pitch count as opposed to innings.
Rich Davis
I'm pretty sure you could still check out both. But if you're asking me what I'm genuinely more excited about, I'd be lying. If I'm like, man, NBA Game five, I'll watch. But I am intrigued to see what Shohei Ohtani does tonight as a dodger on the mound against a division rival. Like, I know it's June, but it's exciting.
Danny G
Danny G. Yeah, I can't wait for it. Although I am nervous because you saw him hit those couple home runs against the Giants the other day, and he's in his own. Yeah. You do not want the flow to be interrupted as far as his bat goes or his legs stolen bases.
Rich Davis
My list of questions is applicable to you and a Dodgers fan, so follow me here. Okay. When it comes to Shohei Ohtani tonight, returning first time pitching for the Doyers, is it because he wants it? Is it because the fans want it? Is it because the Dodgers want to get, quote, their money's worth?
Danny G
I think they've already got their money.
Rich Davis
Is it because the Dodgers.
Steve Covino
He wants. He wants it because the fans want him. If you're a real Dodgers fan, yeah, there's intrigue there, and you're rooting for him, but you want him to be healthy and safe. You want no injuries, no risks. You don't want to mess with something that's already working. So I think the real fan, the real Dodgers fan, it's not for them, the casual fan or the baseball fan, I should say, like me, I think we're intrigued because, hell, yeah, let's see it. But this is all because he wants to be that guy, because he can be that guy.
Rich Davis
And then the next question is, with the Dodgers currently being one of the best teams in baseball, do they need it? And then the final question is, is it all those combined and just overall good for baseball? And that answer is, obviously, yes.
Danny G
Well, right now, they do need it because they are so injured in the starting pitcher slash bullpen category that, you know, to have an Ohtani out there is only good right now. But in the long term, you just hope that none of these ugly injuries rear their heads ever again because he's had not one, but two surgeries on that elbow. So you just, you just pray that there's not going to be anything bad that comes from this.
Steve Covino
This goes back to one of our famous examples here, and it's the question, yeah, you guys remember when Farrah Fawcett died? The answer is probably no because it was overshadowed by When Michael Jackson passed away. Michael Jackson gets all the attention, all the headlines. And even though, hey, we miss Farrah Fawcett and she was a legend and all that. Yeah, Michael Jackson took precedent over everything. Right? So he takes. He takes the headline. And unfortunately, Farrah Fawcett takes the backseat to this story. Shohei is the biggest story of the night. Everything else, Giancarlo Stanton, Game five, the NBA Finals. Everything else that happens between now and then takes a backseat to that. That's how big it is. And again, not just in the world of baseball and here in America, worldwide. That's the difference. He's that much of a megastar. And that answers your question, again, Rich, about the Dodgers want what they pay for. They've already gotten their money. They got it back last year.
Rich Davis
I just wonder, is there anyone that's. Man, we paid him 70mil to pitch and hit. Is that even a sentiment? Or is like, no, no, no. We have Showhei Otani.
Danny G
Had they not won the World Series, you might hear some of that. But I think that put it to bed.
Steve Covino
He's proven to be the star everybody wanted him to be. The guy is. He's a. He's a freak. He really is a freak of nature. And that's why everyone's tuned in and everyone's excited to see, hey, he might get rocked. We just want to see, like, yo, is he dominant or is he a little sus right now? Is he going to get rocked by the Padres? You don't keep in mind. You don't think the Padres have something to say about this? You don't think that they're getting together and they're like, yo, man, we played today. We win today. That's it.
Rich Davis
You're a big baseball fan. I am. Danny is. Matt just hit us up in Minnesota at Covino Rush. He goes, you guys are. Because you guys are nuts to think Ohtani pitching trumps the NBA Finals.
Steve Covino
It does. It does.
Rich Davis
I think it does.
Steve Covino
I don't think there's any question I understand the magnitude of a Finals versus a regular season game.
Rich Davis
I think it's up for debate. I mean, yeah, there's NBA fans that are like, you serious? You know, I will say this.
Steve Covino
If it was like a win or go home sort of game, then, yeah, now we're talking. This is a game five, crucial game. It's a crucial game five. But it's not, hey, someone's winning tonight.
Danny G
It's not game seven.
Steve Covino
Yeah, it's not a game seven.
Rich Davis
Kove, you gave the Farrah Fawcett Michael Jackson analogy. And that's just life, right? Like, whatever's going on in your world, you don't need to be a celebrity, a mega superstar in sports or entertainment. But your news is only as big as what else is going on in everyone's world. Like, for instance, you could say if someone unfortunately passes away on the same day as a bigger celebrity, they're not gonna get the headline. I always call it the office drunk at the office party scenario. If you're drunk at the company, like holiday party, if someone's more drunk and they're like humping random strangers and they're like doing toast and falling off the tables, no one will remember that you were a drunk fool at the party, because that's the drunkest fool. And I think that sometimes you're just comparing yourself to what's the biggest story.
Steve Covino
Because right now we were on a plane with O.J. simpson, which is a true story. We were on a plane with OJ Simpson and we said, man, if this plane goes down because of karma, we're like a. We're barely a blurb. It's like OJ Simpson dies from karma in a plane crash.
Danny G
On board, two national radio hosts.
Steve Covino
Weenie radio hosts.
Rich Davis
And they would have misspelled you like. And also Steve Corvino and Convino and.
Steve Covino
Rick were also on the flight. No one cares at that point, you know, so again, I think, again, this is our prediction. We're not guaranteeing it. This is our prediction. We'll see how the public feels about it tonight. That's the fun of it. Are you going to see more coverage and headlines? I mean, everybody's algorithms different. But are you going to see more coverage and excitement for Shohei back or a game?
Rich Davis
Five, Check social media and I'll tell you why. Because ESPN all of a sudden hates baseball. And they, you know, I wonder why they lick the sweat off the basketball shoes of the NBA.
Steve Covino
They probably hate the fact that ratings are growing everywhere and their contract is up. They're done with baseball. So bad timing for them. That's like, that's like when you break up with a girl and then she gets real hot afterward.
Rich Davis
I broke up with a girl once and she got huge boobs after we broke up.
Steve Covino
Just baseball has huge boobs now. And ESPN's like, oh, man.
Danny G
This may change with a game winning shot tonight.
Rich Davis
Hang out one more time.
Steve Covino
Well, that's, that's also the fun of our. That's also the fun of our conversation. Danny.
Danny G
Well, I was going to say basically.
Steve Covino
If basketball has like a nail biter overtime game. That could be cool.
Danny G
But over the weekend, over, over the weekend I saw more clips and I got hit up with more text messages about that Lance Stevenson, Dwight Howard fight. Me too, in the big three than I did game four in the NBA Finals.
Steve Covino
People like drama show, man. That was, that was a really cool moment. Again, it was, it was an ugly scene. But when you see Dwight Howard and Lance Stevenson going at it into the stands, wrestling, people love that. People love that. So, yeah, I saw the same thing. What are people gonna be buzzing about? That's really what we're asking you. And what do you care most about? Well, remember, we're not Dodgers fans.
Rich Davis
Hey, little tortilla boy.
Steve Covino
Danny is.
Rich Davis
And I say that respectfully because I'm comparing you to, as you love to call her, the little tortilla girl. Hard shell or soft shell? Why not both? I look at it this way. It's a Monday, which would normally be like a Monday.
Steve Covino
Now you got Monday Funday.
Rich Davis
Yeah, you got Shohei pitching and game. If anything, you can't bitch and complain. You got two cool things to watch tonight.
Steve Covino
And I got a nudie magazine when I woke up in the mail today.
Rich Davis
That's nudie magazine day.
Steve Covino
Yeah. So Monday funding. There he is. Javier Sam on the ones and twos.
Rich Davis
Yep.
Steve Covino
Danny G. Yes, I'm still fly. The flyest of them all. The smoothest, most buttery voice in all the land. Danny G's on the phones.
Rich Davis
I'll give you buy you a coffee and a salad for lunch tomorrow if you could tell me who sings this song.
Steve Covino
I'm not playing your goofy game just.
Danny G
Because you know it's big timers.
Rich Davis
Thank you, Danny G. You don't get a salad though. I'll get you a coffee though.
Steve Covino
Like, ask questions that you know the answer to and act like you're smart about it.
Rich Davis
That Alex Trebek made a career of that. Rest in peace.
Steve Covino
Yeah, exactly. Who are you? Alex Trebek.
Rich Davis
Alex Trebek. His job was to make it look like he. Yeah, you, Alex.
Danny G
Big timers with a Y.
Steve Covino
Rich Davis loves to like. Only next time I know something that I know he won't know, I'll offer him a salad and a coffee to see if he does.
Tom Yamas
Ew.
Rich Davis
Salad and coffee. It doesn't go well together. You're right when I said it sounds.
Danny G
Like a trip to the bathroom.
Rich Davis
All right, so try to get flushed out before our big party.
Steve Covino
I know the song, but I didn't know the performer. Thank you guys for hanging out with Covino and Rich partying in Vegas this week live broadcast on Friday from Circa. So tune in. You got to time out your announcements. It happens in life all the time. You don't want to announce your wedding right when your brother announces birth of his son. You know what I mean? Like, you got to time out your announcements. Giancarlo Stanton's return is being trumped by Shohei's return. Shohei's return is trumping Joey Chestnut's return. Or is it? We'll find out when he stops by. We're saying that Shohei trumps everything. Everything takes a backseat to Shohei, including game five tonight, NBA Finals.
Rich Davis
I feel bad sometimes there will be a celebrity wrapped up in a scandal that isn't really that juicy, but nothing else is going on. And you know. And you know that they're praying, like, please, something happened. Like, there was still something recently where we're like, wow, that's getting a lot of attention. And Cavino and I said to each other, oh, you know, they're praying for something crazy to happen. And then something did. I. Don't you remember what I'm talking about?
Joey Chestnut
I think.
Rich Davis
Right?
Steve Covino
Yeah, it was. Yeah, exactly. Yeah, I know exactly what you're talking about, but I'm not saying it. Let's go to the phones at 877-99-FOX. Let's talk to Alex in Phoenix. Does show hey take precedence over anything else going on tonight, or are we just buying it to the show? Hey, Hype, the finals are still the finals. What are your thoughts?
Danny G
I mean, it's a technicality, but he probably won't pitch the whole game.
Steve Covino
So maybe they said one or two innings.
Rich Davis
Yeah, I mean, one or two innings. I think for that they will peak there.
Danny G
But, I mean, Tyrese Halliburton has done a hell of a job. Like, every team is one on the opposing team's court. So I think it's 50. 50.
Rich Davis
I mean, I do want to give you guys credit, though.
Danny G
I didn't have this on my bingo card. A Pablo Francisco and Billy Madison reference in the same sentence before you guys went to break.
Rich Davis
That was.
Danny G
That was pretty good.
Steve Covino
We're big Pablo fans. We are. And that's no joke.
Rich Davis
We did give a Pablo Francisco.
Steve Covino
Me, the little tortilla boy.
Rich Davis
Yeah, little tortilla boy. And we made a Billy Referee. Billy Madison nudie magazine day reference. That's the show. Alex, you got. You get us.
Steve Covino
Yeah, you do get us. Thank you, Alex.
Rich Davis
Thanks, buddy boy. Now enjoy your Monday night, because again, I said we're just all the winners here, right? Because you could say what's more important. How about the fact that on Monday night in June, you had the return of Shohei and Game five on the same night. Congrats to you. Enjoy your Monday. Now, there was a story about Troy Aikman. Who?
Steve Covino
Oh, I know. He's the white Jay Z.
Rich Davis
That story, I can't get that out of my head.
Steve Covino
I know. Every time I see his face, I think then it is like when they.
Rich Davis
When whoever thought of that, where they put Jay Z and Troy Aikman side by side, you're like, yo, he's the white Jay Z. It is uncanny. It's weird. It's like, you ever see David Schwimmer with Nick Cage's face on it and it looks like even more like David Schwimmer.
Steve Covino
I have, actually. Yeah. Legendary Dallas Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman says the NFL owes it to the fans who gamble on football to make sure the refs make the right calls. Quote, there's a lot of money that's changing hands with all these calls. I think we owe it to the fans that we get it right. And I think we're at a point in time where we can, we can get it more right, according to Troy Aikman. So we ask you, does he have a point? And I think he has a stellar point Incubus style. I think he makes a great point. And as Mike, who runs this place even said, and I hate agreeing with Mike, but he's right, that guy.
Rich Davis
I mean, Mike. Yeah.
Steve Covino
It's as simple as if we're at the point in time where we have the technology to see the right call at home. How in the world could you justify not getting it right on the field?
Rich Davis
There is on planet earth more infuriating than when you're sitting at home and they show a camera angle. It's like the ball across the plane. And they don't rule that on the field. Remember we learned last year that the network had some camera angles that New York didn't have? I'm not dreaming. This. This did happen last year, remember we. We found out that. Wait, wait, you tell me. The replay center doesn't have the camera angles that I believe Amazon had for a Thursday night game. Damn buyer.
Danny G
Right?
Tom Yamas
Yeah, yeah. And this is honestly, guys, why I love coaches challenges so much, because put it on them. Put it on the coaches for wasting a silly challenge. Otherwise games would take forever. I get that it's infuriating when you're seeing an angle that we haven't seen. And I felt like there was. I don't know if it was like a goaltending call or some call maybe in a Lakers series where LeBron was saying like, yeah, how did they get that camera angle or whatever it was. But there seems to be camera angles everywhere. But when it comes to missed calls, it's actually why I like the challenges. Because it puts the onus, not on the officiating, on the coaches to be able to correct something that could be so egregious.
Rich Davis
To your point, I, I think getting it right is like just the basic fundamentals. Like, I get it. We like the human element, right? You love the human element of sports.
Steve Covino
Gambling has changed that because if they're going to lean into gambling as a source of income and everyone's on board and everyone's in on the action and we know that was a bad call, it only looks corrupt from their standpoint. By not using the technology available to get it right. It's like, well, if you got so many people who have money on this, how could you not?
Rich Davis
You don't want to slow down the games. And I get that. But there was a play the other night, and again, I'm sorry if I'm referencing a Mets game, because that's what I was watching. There was a ball that went off the bat, foul tip. And in the booth, Gary, Keith and Ron saw it, fans saw it, the replay showed it. But it's a non reviewable call. And then you got to ask yourself, well, why not? If all of us watching money on.
Steve Covino
Something stupid like that, all of us.
Rich Davis
Were watching and we're like, yeah, the. You saw the trajectory of the ball change because it hit slightly off the bat. If we all saw it, how on the field could they be like, nope, the ball.
Tom Yamas
Well, games could take five hours then.
Rich Davis
That's why I do like the limit on the, on the challenges.
Tom Yamas
That's. And that's the point that I bring up as well, is it's not as much about the missed call. It's about the coaching having the ability. And I understand how you're saying, like some calls aren't reviewable. Like that gets frustrating. That's why I thought the face mask penalty, which I've been an advocate of years, of course you could see it. And it actually was finally brought up this year as possibly being something that they would review. Then it ended up not happening with the owners this off season. But something like that doesn't need an official to go to the sideline and look at something or an umpire to sit there and hear what's happening. He can get the message from New Jersey or New York or wherever it is, and then just say penalty and move on.
Rich Davis
But nothing makes me happier. Dan. When you are watching a football game and they make that quick adjustment on the fly because, oh, you know, hey, we saw. We quickly saw something. We changed it with no need to stop down the game for minutes at a time. No need to go to a replay. Hey, we saw it. We got it wrong. We got it right. Now let's move on with the game.
Steve Covino
I also think the main point that Aikman makes, the best point, is that we owe it to the fans. If you're relying on the fans to support these sponsors, and the sponsors are gambling websites, which has been, you know, a major source of income for so many sports talk radio shows and leagues, then you got to get it right for the fans, because they're seeing it and it's an injustice to them. We're seeing it from home, so the technology's there. It only makes sense to get it right for the fans. So I completely agree with Troy Aikman. And who cares about the human element? It's not about the win or the loss anymore. It's about the millions of dollars that people are making and the millions of dollars that fans are now spending to get it right.
Rich Davis
I always find it funny when pride got in the way.
Steve Covino
It's weird that this is what's.
Rich Davis
Yeah.
Steve Covino
This is what's causing the change to happen.
Rich Davis
Money.
Danny G
Yeah.
Steve Covino
Gambling.
Rich Davis
Yeah, exactly. I. I always found it funny when there was like a weird pride in an official or someone knowing they got it wrong, but they stuck by their guns. That to me is like. Because even if you're playing rec sports or, you know, your kids playing little league or, you know, pal basketball, you ever see, like, a referee or someone get the call wrong? But everyone that everyone else there saw it like, oh, he tagged them. And you're like, nah, he missed him by a good two feet. If everyone. If even the other teams, like, yeah, blue, it was, you know, he missed them. Nope. Out like, your. Your pride is that strong that I. And bigger than the game. It's so weird to me. But, hey, Troy Aikman's got something there by saying, get it right. Let's do. You must have been mad.
Steve Covino
I know.
Rich Davis
I'm calling about a. I'm calling out a random play. But earlier in the year, your dude, Frankenstein himself, number 99, Heron Judge, hit a home run that they're like, foul ball. And upon replay. It was so fair.
Steve Covino
I mean, it happened this weekend. You saw double ejection from Aaron Boone. Aaron Boone was ejected and DJ LeMay, who ejected for the first time in his career because there was a ball that appeared to be fair and it was just too close to overturn. But you know, they, they at least reviewed it. Yeah, but he complained about it. He got tossed. So look, get it right is the point. And I see no shame and no crime in that, especially when you have all this money on the line nowadays.
Rich Davis
And with all the robots we have. All right, hey, let's take your feedback. But first let's go to Dan Byer. He's got an update. Dan Byer, what's going on, buddy?
Tom Yamas
Guys, you're talking about Ohtani. You're talking about game five this overshadowing that. Maybe Gage Wood overshadowed everybody. On this Monday, the 1, 2.
Danny G
Yes. Waiting in the mace.
Rich Davis
Greatness from Gage.
Steve Covino
A no hitter.
Tom Yamas
A no hitter at the College World Series. The third ever, the first since 1960.
Steve Covino
19 K's.
Tom Yamas
Yes. 19 strikeouts today, Arkansas topping Murray State three nothing. Missed a perfect game because he beamed a batter. But I think Arkansas is happy to move on as it was an elimination game. But even more happy that history was made today in Omaha. Gage wood with the 19 strikeout no hitter. As the Razorbacks top Murray State and eliminate the Racers from the men's College World Series.
Steve Covino
And it's time for our tire rack play of the day. 34 year old JJ Spawn made his Sam Dimas High School in San Diego State proud to win the US Open.
Rich Davis
At Oakmont, one of the hardest, if not the hardest test in major championship golf. For the win, JJ Spawn ball up.
Steve Covino
And over the ridge.
Rich Davis
It's on a very good line. This could go in.
Steve Covino
J.J. spahn makes it.
Danny G
It's the biggest moment of his career.
Rich Davis
J.J. spahn conquers Oakmont and is your 125th U.S. open champion. I haven't seen a shot like that since Gilmore McGavin in 94.
Steve Covino
JJ spawn his first major championship. That's courtesy of PGA Tour Radio. And that's our tire rack play of the day.
Rich Davis
And for over 40 years, Shoota Tire rack has been helping customers find the right tires for how, what and where they drive ship fast and free. Backed by free road hazard protection. Convenient insulation options like mobile tire insulation. Tirerack.com the way tire buying should be.
Steve Covino
All right, so welcome back to the Show Graham program. In about 10 minutes, we welcome the guy who makes his triumphant return. Not Shohei Otani, not Giancarlo Stanton, Joey Chestnut, the Goat superstar. The Goat. He'll be here to tell us how it happened, what to expect, and more. But wrapping up this Troy Aikman thought of. We owe it to the fans to get the calls right. Yeah. With all the money trading hands and all the gambling going on, you see.
Rich Davis
This all the time. When money, sponsors and. And powerful people get involved, all of a sudden, that's when things change.
Steve Covino
Yeah. It doesn't matter why the change was made, as long as it's made right. I think people are also like, man, we had the technology and the ability to get it right for a minute now, but because. Because of gambling, now we're going to, like, try to enforce this. And again, this is just speculation from Troy Aikman, but, yeah, who cares if we get it as long as we get it right? I think that we all just want it to be right without wasting time. Like Dan Byers, is there a call.
Rich Davis
That or a play in any sport that. That you wish was reviewable, but you know that it would be a. A slippery slope? Remember pass interference, Danny G. Where we realized, oh, man, you could almost sort of call pass interference on any play? I feel like you can't challenge holding. I almost feel like if you also challenged face mask, it has to be. It has to be egregious. Like, I think if. Like, if you grab someone's mask for a half a second, like, is it.
Steve Covino
Really within reason there's still a human element involved? Because the initial. Well, in baseball, for example. Right. If you. If it's. The evidence is not good enough to overturn, then you stick with the original call. So it just matters on what they called and how it pans out.
Rich Davis
And there's. Is there enough evidence to overturn to overturn it?
Steve Covino
Right. So there's still a human element involved.
Danny G
Yeah. And speaking of money being involved, Chet, he texted us. He said if a cashier gives you the wrong change, you don't say that's the human element. You say it's a mistake and you want it to be corrected.
Steve Covino
Yeah. Especially when it's your money on the line. Right.
Rich Davis
What if they give you too much change?
Danny G
Well, that's different.
Rich Davis
That's fine.
Steve Covino
You know, you just look over your shoulders, make sure no one saw, and you walk away. All right, so I'm on Team Troy Aikman as far as getting it right in the NFL and all sports.
Rich Davis
In fact, I'm just looking at the all Star balloting so far for baseball. Your boy Paul Goldschmidt. Leading first baseman.
Steve Covino
I mean, dude's having a season, having a season. He's a hall of Famer. You look at his numbers, you're like, damn.
Rich Davis
And to prove my point earlier and Dan Byer during the update said leading vote getter Aaron Judge. He really is. He really is. You know, I mean, he had a.
Steve Covino
Bad weekend, but he's a another circus freak. Everything he hits, he destroys.
Rich Davis
So enjoy your show. Hey, return tonight. Enjoy your NBA Game five. Now, tonight. You know, they always say whoever wins game five when it's tied to two ends up, you know, most likely winning the whole thing, you know. Do you think that's the case, Danny, or do you see this as just every day? It's like back and forth.
Danny G
This has felt like a seven game series from the start.
Rich Davis
OKC is almost double digit favorites at home. Game five, the sentiment is all along they should have been the team. So if they win big tonight, I do wonder, Ken, can Indiana go back for Game 6?
Steve Covino
And then that's been the pattern. All right, so on that OKC tip, I just want to let people know that over the weekend, aside from all the sports we were watching and of course how to train your dragon, which was number one, I watched this show called Power Moves with Shaquille o' Neal on Netflix. And Shaq is now the president of Reebok, which he helped build. He helped build that brand with Allen Iverson, who's now the vp. And one of Shaq's priority moves was to get SGA to sign with Reebok. And you see the whole thing play out where SGA resigns with converse, but sort of blows off Shaq a little bit respectfully.
Danny G
But yeah, it felt like they didn't have enough money, right?
Steve Covino
They didn't have enough money. So they pivot and they start going after G League players like think pate and other guys like that. But if you want to see behind.
Rich Davis
The scenes, that's got to be awkward.
Steve Covino
Really cool, because his, his mind was set like SGA before he was mvp. SGA is the guy to take brand to where it used to be with me.
Rich Davis
Cool. But I don't think the average brand thinks about those awkward situations. Meaning Kavino. If you are a star player, picture it almost like, you know, on the Bachelor. I know I'm making the lamest analogy, but it makes total sense.
Steve Covino
You don't need to because you see Shaq go right up to SJ is like, hey man, we need to talk business after the game. We need to talk some business. And you know, it's an honor, but he still has to sort of reject them politely and he starts ghosting Shaq a little bit. That's the vibe I got.
Rich Davis
I'm saying it's sort of like dating, like free agency and stuff like that is dating where you, you have to let someone down. And I can only imagine if you're a free agent and you've met with five teams and they're all so confident, like he's going to come here. You have to tell those four teams like, I'm sorry, you're just not the one.
Steve Covino
Yeah.
Rich Davis
And SGA had to tell that to Shaq.
Steve Covino
Shaq. Yeah. And again, really worth the watch. It's a fun watch. It's called Power Moves on Netflix. When you're done with all the great games. Ton.
Rich Davis
Nice. Well, we are joined by Joey Chestnut, legendary hot dog eater. Next, hang tight. He announced his major return to the Nathan's hot dog eating contest. Joey Chestnut, everybody. There he is, our guy. What's up, Joey?
Joey Chestnut
Good to see you guys again.
Rich Davis
Good to see you always, man.
Steve Covino
Hell yeah. So huge announcement and that's why we brought you here. He's back 16 time Nathan's hot dog eating champion. Going for 17. He holds an eight year winning streak from over seven to 14. He holds the record with 76 hot dogs in what, 10 minutes.
Rich Davis
I look at all the championship belts behind you.
Steve Covino
Joey.
Rich Davis
First of all, gotta ask. Well, first of all, good to see you. Second of all, how easy was this to get done? Because we talked last year and it didn't end up the way we wanted.
Joey Chestnut
It absolutely didn't end the way we wanted to or expected. But it's, it's been a little bit of work. But it's, we, yeah, we took some communicating and last year communication broke down and we all kind of good things don't happen when you're not talking. So this year I think we, we. I saw you right around Super Bowl. Yeah, yeah, it's man, like almost immediately after that we started really talking and it just took a while to get. For them to be comfortable with the things that, that I, that were bothering them last year and for me to, you know, if we had to meet.
Steve Covino
In the middle, what was the hurdle, man? What was the issue that you guys had to overcome?
Joey Chestnut
There, there was, there was that issue with, with the plant, plant based food. So they, we ended up making a deal where, you know what? I, I can still do Meatless Mondays and, and promote another brand. But I'm, I'm, I'm Gonna be. I've always been.
Danny G
Dude.
Joey Chestnut
Yeah. Nathan's hot dogs are 100. The only hot dogs I was promoting. So there's not gonna be any confusion. I'm not gonna work with. I never wanted to eat plant based hot dogs on the fourth of July. So there's. We just clarified some things and we. Yeah, dude, I'm.
Danny G
I'm back.
Steve Covino
Well, the competition. Yes. He's so back. The competition needs you. Last year, Patrick Bertoletti won in your absence. Is he any threat this year? I think he had about 58 last year. Any threat to you? And what's your view on him?
Joey Chestnut
Oh, he's a good guy from Chicago. I've known him since, man, he just turned 40. I'm 41. So we've known each other years, but my biggest competitor is some crazy guy and he's. It's me. If I get in my own head, I make mistakes, it's. But if I, If I'm doing everything right, I can. I'm gonna annihilate everybody.
Steve Covino
Oh, man.
Joey Chestnut
It's gonna be, it's gonna be. Yeah.
Steve Covino
So he's a good guy, but you're gonna annihilate beautiful chaos.
Rich Davis
By the way, is he. You got to imagine. Is Patrick mad that you're coming back?
Joey Chestnut
No. We're competitive eaters. We. If we're getting on a big stage, we want to compete against the best. So he, he felt like he did win. He earned that win. He got a personal best last year. But he wants, he wants to compete against me, and he's not mad at all. We're going to be pushing each other hard.
Rich Davis
Joey Chestnut here on Kavino and Rich, Fox Sports Radio. Joey, you're allowed to brag if it's true. So let me ask you, are you more important to hot dog eating than Caitlin Clark is to the wnba? Because when, when big stars aren't part of it, it seems to like. You saw the WNBA ratings attendance when she was out for a few weeks. Joey Chestnut, what do you think?
Joey Chestnut
Caitlin Clark, have you, have you met her? She is amazing. Yeah, dude, I'm, I'm. Yeah, I'm nothing compared to her. She really is amazing. And I'm not bigger than hot dogs. People were still eating hot dogs on fourth of July. I was eating hot dogs last year even though I wasn't at Coney Island. But you know, this is this Nathan's Hot Dogs, Fourth of July. I'm happy to be back.
Rich Davis
Joey, where do you meet Caitlin Clark? How does that happen? Like a conference of the goats? Like, what's going on? Where do you interact with Caitlin Clark?
Joey Chestnut
At a minor league baseball game in Indiana. And she was there, too. And the people from the stadium said, hey, she's in the suite next to you. You want to go say hi? She's absolutely. She's amazing. She's the best.
Steve Covino
I like the other story better. It's you, Caitlin, you're all in a room. Michael Jor, Jordan, Mike Tyson, all the goats just hanging out. Just hanging out as a goat conference. I like that story. What's a bigger comeback again? The headline. I'm back. I think I heard Jordan say that, right?
Rich Davis
Yeah, I believe so.
Steve Covino
But Joey Chestnut has also said it. He's back. So what's the bigger comeback or headline tonight? Your comeback? Shohei's comeback, Stanton or NBA Game 5? Because you're all over the news today.
Joey Chestnut
You know what? Tonight I'm going for the comeback. I want the Pacers to get the win tonight. That'd be pretty awesome. This was bound to happen. I'm just happy we did it. And now I just got to eat some hot dogs.
Rich Davis
Yo, Joey, I'm not even BSing you. Is there a part of you that feels like in a country where everyone's at odds politically, everyone argues. Is there something about you being back that everyone could be like, that's awesome. Do you realize that there was probably a part of that that everyone's sort of pumped about? It sounds ridiculous, but I feel that it's weird.
Joey Chestnut
Yeah, I know. Hot dogs. I don't know politics, but it definitely feels like the people who follow me are from every corner of America, and I'm very happy.
Steve Covino
Well, yeah. There's nothing more American. Yeah. And you're the face of it. And to back Rich's point last year, not to take anything away from what Patrick did last year, but it just wasn't the same. There was a void there, and it didn't unite people the way it normally does. I didn't hear much of a buzz about it other than, did you hear who won? Because Joey wasn't there. And I say that respectfully. So I think it does bring some fun excitement where the country needs it, to be honest.
Joey Chestnut
Yeah. Pat, I think if there's something on TV and it's a sport, people want to see the best in the world and. And Pat's awesome. But on the Fourth of July, celebrating America, we want to see somebody go for a record. And I'm. I'm going to be doing it.
Steve Covino
I have a listener question from Mercer in Pittsburgh says the first time Joey Chestnut got to Coney island, he ate 32 hot dogs. Is that a fact? So you went from 32 to what, 76?
Joey Chestnut
Yeah, that's an absolute fact, that even that year, I remember my first practice that year, I only did 16 in practice. And so it's just slowly building my tolerance and just making my body get comfortable, being uncomfortable, and that's the way I push it.
Steve Covino
He says. As an aspiring eater who ate 17 and a half in his first try, I'd like to know how exciting it is to get the call to be able to compete the first time and how it compares to being asked to come back again.
Joey Chestnut
Oh, it's amazing. It's, you know, the first, the first time I went to Coney Island, I was, I was literally a table ender. We call them the table enders, the people who have the lowest qualifiers. And I, I was so nervous. I went there. I was wearing Levi's, A table. I didn't give it that much thought at the time, but now it's. Yeah, it's, it's. It's a. It's an amazing stage on the fourth of July.
Steve Covino
So a table lender is like the weak link of the table. Is that what that is? Kind of. I mean, you made it, but you're sort of the weakest guy. So that would be me when we're out to dinner and I order a steak, well done, right?
Rich Davis
Yeah. He's a team lender. Yeah. That's like a debate where the people that don't have a chance are always like, the end, you know? Yeah, it's sort of like the table.
Joey Chestnut
Enders, or we call it the kid, the kiddie table.
Danny G
Yeah.
Steve Covino
Right, kids? Right.
Rich Davis
I got to ask. Joey Chestnut, hanging out on Cavino. Rich, he's back. Fourth of July. Nothing more American than hot dogs with Joey Chestnut.
Steve Covino
Every couple weeks, it's a big story.
Rich Davis
Today I saw one of our, one of our pals on the Dan Patrick show. One of the behind the scenes guys did that 9, 9, 9 challenge at a ball game. Is that amateur? Do you think that's awesome that people are trying to do nine hot dogs, nine beers in nine innings. What's your take on that?
Joey Chestnut
It's amazing. I've been doing it. I came close to 20, 20, 27, 27 and nine. But yeah, it's. Yeah, nine is a. It's. I, I think most real adults can do them and do it. Yeah, it's definitely. Especially these days. They'll serve the, the beers and cans. It's not even full pints. So it's definitely doable.
Steve Covino
Now, before we get your prediction, Joey Chestnut, we've heard the rumors, or maybe it's scientific fact, I don't know, that you lose, what, 30 minutes of life for every hot dog? Have you ever thought about that? Is there any truth to that? Because you've been eating, you've been taking back a lot for years now.
Joey Chestnut
I. It wasn't 30 minutes. I think somebody said it was like, maybe two minutes. And so if you calculate, I've ran the numbers and maybe it's like five years I've taken off. And you know what?
Rich Davis
But for the glory, it's worth it.
Joey Chestnut
For a good time, not a long time.
Rich Davis
All right.
Steve Covino
Hey, I like it.
Rich Davis
Hey, Joey, as people get ready for the fourth in a couple weeks, is. Is throwing hot dogs on the barbecue, on the grill the best way, or are you a boiled hot dog guy? If you had to pick your preference.
Joey Chestnut
Is this a joke? Really?
Rich Davis
I mean, I gotta ask the great.
Joey Chestnut
Come on, dude, boiled hot dogs, they're almost criminal. It's. And, you know, so a long time ago, I was giving Costco a hard time about their hot dogs and say, actually, we don't boil them, we steam them. So boiling is even worse than steaming. But, yeah, it's. Dude. Yeah, you got to be on a grill, either flat top or griddle or grill. It's a. Dude. You got to get. It has to get that direct heat to get the fat and juices flowing. And it's a. That's the way.
Rich Davis
Joey, when you're not competitively eating, what is the proper way to have a dog on the 4th? What are you putting on it? Ketchup, Mustard, relish, Onions. Like, what's those New York City red onions? Like, what does Joey Chestnut do if he's wanting to eat a hot dog for actual enjoyment?
Joey Chestnut
Oh, my God. I'm not married to one topping, so I. I get to go wherever my heart desires. But mostly if raw onions and mustard. A good deli mustard.
Rich Davis
Okay, that's.
Joey Chestnut
That's an easy go to. But I'll. I'll mess around. I love a good chili cheese dog. I. Oh, I was somewhere. I had a good Chicago dog recently. It was so. It was just put everything on there.
Rich Davis
What's your thoughts on the. What's your thoughts on the corn dog? I don't think we ever had. Do you like a corn dog or no?
Joey Chestnut
Well, corn dog, it's trouble. I've had some experiences where you bite into a corn dog and it's like hotter. It ruins my mouth for like two days. So sometimes it's. It's very. I've never burnt my mouth on a hot dog, but a corn dog can be trouble in the deep fryer.
Rich Davis
It's like a hot pocket. It could deceive you like a hot pocket in college, right?
Joey Chestnut
Yeah, it could be magma inside there.
Steve Covino
Hey, what's the aftermath like? I'm not talking bathroom antics. I'm talking recovery. What's it like the day after a major competition like this? Because you're putting your body through a lot. There's a lot of pressure. This is your big return. How long does it take for your body to get back to normal after this?
Joey Chestnut
It's. It takes two days to start feeling good and it can. The day after can be really bad. If I got dehydrated, it's so the weather in Coney, on Coney island, fourth of July, it's. It's sometimes oppressive heat and humidity. So those are the times where I go in knowing that it's going to take longer to recover.
Steve Covino
When you say bad, though, like you bed. It's like a day in bed. You're just laying.
Joey Chestnut
I'm lethargic.
Steve Covino
Yeah.
Joey Chestnut
I'm, I'm more bloated. I'm trying to take in more liquids and it's just. I'm getting more bloated. Even though it's. Yeah, it's just hard. It's harder on the body when, when I'm at all dehydrated, so. But I learned my body a little better. But it's. If once I get, get moving, I start sweating, smell like a hot dog. It's the me sweats start coming and I, yeah, it takes, it takes a good two days. You feel close to normal.
Steve Covino
And speaking of your body and recovery, do you have ring rust? I know you missed a year, but you never stop competing. I know that's your lifestyle. I know it's what you do and you eat all sorts of things competitively.
Rich Davis
But I love how you're ring rust. Comparing him to a fighter.
Steve Covino
Are you ready, man? Is the body ready? Are you ready? And what's your prediction? How do you see this panning out? Fourth of July weekend, when you said ring rust.
Joey Chestnut
My, my Britain, the gears returning. I was like, where is he going with this?
Rich Davis
Yeah, I mean, it's been a year.
Steve Covino
You missed a year.
Joey Chestnut
I. This is. I, I've been really lucky. I did a couple contests already this year. I made a new world record with baloney. And in Knoxville, Tennessee. So I. I not annihilated my old record. So my body's ready. I'm. I feel good. It's gonna be. Just gotta. Yeah, like I said, just eat some hot dogs, find my happy place.
Rich Davis
I don't know. I may have eaten more bologna than Joanie than Joey at my grandmother's house in the 80s.
Steve Covino
Yeah.
Rich Davis
Bologna, ketchup, baloney sandwiches every day. Joey, continued success. I'm glad you're back. We're happy that you're back and always appreciate you giving Cavino and Rich some time, brother.
Steve Covino
Appreciate you, man.
Joey Chestnut
Oh, great talking to you guys again.
Rich Davis
Absolutely. Joey Chestnut, the big return.
Steve Covino
It's not Shohei Ohtani. When you think about what brings Americans in America together, It's Joey Chestnut, 4th of July. My prediction. Patrick Bertoletti. Never heard of him. But Joey Chestnut's back.
Rich Davis
All right, give me this. What's. What's your. Not over under. What's your point? What's your dog spread?
Danny G
Whoa.
Steve Covino
If you're.
Rich Davis
What's your. What's your dog spread? How many does he beat second place by?
Steve Covino
Well, Joey. Joey's record is 76. Patrick won last year with 58. I think both guys improve. I think Joey breaks his own record. You heard the guy. He says the only one I'm competing with is myself. They're not looking over to see what the competition is doing. They're trying to beat their own personal records and do the best that they can. So my prediction is pain. And Joey breaks it by one dog. 77 to Bertoletti, 60. I think Bertoletti really pushes. He gets 60 this year. Joey beats him by 17.
Rich Davis
I think Chestnut brings it, but he's not going for his own record. I think he's going to ease his way back in.
Steve Covino
But, dude, he's trying to make a statement, bro. This is his big comeback.
Rich Davis
I'm going to compare it to tonight's dub. NBA game five. OKC is favored by nine and a half. So I'm going to set the hot dog spread at nine and a half. Does Joey Chestnut beat second place by 10 dogs in two weeks?
Danny G
You just said hot dog.
Steve Covino
I'm saying yes. Yeah, he said hot dog spread.
Rich Davis
Danny, what's your dog spread?
Danny G
Yeah, I'm, you know, I'm kind of with Rich. I feel like he's going to have to ease his way back in. I don't think he'll beat his personal record until the next Fourth of July.
Steve Covino
Okay. Like, you know, one year off.
Danny G
Yeah, Little.
Steve Covino
He's not the same. But you know what?
Danny G
Rich it's like Michael Jordan coming back.
Steve Covino
I gotta ask you this. It's a lot like Michael Jordan come back.
Rich Davis
We're having fun with it because Joey's a great guy. And it really is something so American. Fourth of July, Joey Chestnut, Nathan, Coney Island. Like, when he wasn't doing it, it did feel sort of whack.
Steve Covino
It felt empty.
Danny G
It did.
Steve Covino
But boiled hot dogs, are you kidding me? I agree. You would choose a boiled hot dog over a grilled hot dog?
Rich Davis
Hey, ask clown. I like to throw them on the grill. But how many times have you made hot dogs for your kids and that your mom or someone threw in a bun?
Danny G
Who likes that?
Steve Covino
What do you like? Do you like boiled Brussels sprouts?
Rich Davis
Brussels sprouts? No, I do not.
Steve Covino
That's what I mean.
Rich Davis
But, Danny G, you're telling me as a kid you didn't have boiled hot dogs? I mean, didn't. We all did?
Steve Covino
But it doesn't mean you like it.
Rich Davis
You broke at the grill every time.
Danny G
The way no sure was different than a family grill. Cause that's when you were like, this is what hot dogs are supposed to be like. And the Dodger dog, famously, at Dodger Stadium, one of the reasons why it went downhill a little bit is they started boiling some of them rather than grilling all of them.
Rich Davis
Kavino, what about when you go to New York City? You got a great hot dog. Like Rob Parker would say, you get that the red onions on the hot dog. And that's a boiled New York City hot dog.
Steve Covino
What up, Sam?
Danny G
All right, get this, guys. So next year is America's 250th anniversary, 1776 to 2026. His record is what, 76 hot dogs? Yeah, it'll be the fourth, the 250th anniversary of America next year. What if he breaks that record of 76 on America's 250th birthday?
Steve Covino
So maybe he won't break his own record.
Danny G
He can still win it without breaking.
Steve Covino
Purposefully to bring the heat next year.
Danny G
I'm seeing a lot of synergy here. I'm seeing a lot of things syncing up.
Steve Covino
I feel you now. It's time. Last one standing. You have five seconds to battle for.
Rich Davis
Your sports trivia life, man. Oh.
Tom Yamas
I don't got it.
Steve Covino
Put your electronic devices down and pick your sports knowledge.
Rich Davis
It's CNR's last one standing. Last one standing.
Danny G
All right, I have four categories ready to go. And if needed, a tiebreaker. Each contestant gets five seconds to stay alive in the round. If you run out of time or you answer incorrectly, Iowa. Sam will escort you out with his big bad buzzer. You do not want to hear that.
Rich Davis
Not the buzzer.
Danny G
We keep battling until you are the last one standing. If you win two of the rounds, you're the top dog. Here are the contestants. Seven time winner Steve Cavino right over there.
Steve Covino
All right, let's go for eight.
Danny G
To his right. Ten time winner, Rich Davis.
Rich Davis
You will forever be stuck at The Tom Brady 7.
Danny G
Rich Davis boils his hot dogs in for 29 time winner, Dan Byers. The great Steve Decaya.
Rich Davis
Steve. Hey, Steve. It's been a minute.
Steve Covino
Thank you. Good night.
Danny G
And watch out, guys. Steve has a pretty brilliant sports.
Steve Covino
So I know I gotta be a.
Danny G
Zero time winner eternally here.
F
Excited.
Danny G
Better come with it today. All right, let's go to the studio lines. He's playing for one of our stainless steel C and R swiggy water bottles. Steve and Orlando.
Rich Davis
Steve.
F
Steve.
Steve Covino
Wow.
Danny G
Two Steve's playing three Steve.
Rich Davis
Three Steve. Well, Steve's a popular name again because of Minecraft. Right? Steve's not a chicken.
Steve Covino
Hey, Steve.
Danny G
Steve in Orlando. What you do for a living there?
Rich Davis
I actually do food inspection.
Danny G
Oh, all right.
Steve Covino
They still exist.
Danny G
Very important.
F
How are the hot dogs that Nathan?
Rich Davis
One of my favorite Curb youb Enthusiasm episodes is when Larry saw the owner change the inspection rating. Yes, it's a good one.
Danny G
All right. By the way, spot is the fact check. A lot of pressure on him.
F
So much stress.
Danny G
When I say your name, the clock is going to begin. Here's the first category. Bigger wood. The biggest wood. You have five seconds to name a player who leads the MLB in home runs. In 2025. We will take the top 20. All right. MLB player leads the majors right now in home runs. Covina are going to be up first as soon as the timer starts.

On the Cubs PCA. I mean, you know, that's the one I hate the Most.
F
Taylor Ward, 18. Yeah, you.
Steve Covino
I'll tell you what, the chances of Steve winning have just increased.
Rich Davis
Lindor is not at 50.
F
Lindor is. No, he's at the bottom.
Rich Davis
He's at the bottom. Danny G. I was going to say pca, who's tearing up for the Cubs. You know when fans all like to talk about when the player got away, the Mets let him go for like a bag of peanuts. And. And you know when you always watch that player, your team gave up for nothing.
Steve Covino
Oh, yeah, the PCA trade, not as bad as the SGA trade.
Rich Davis
Yes, those are both equally terrible, I think.
Danny G
Seems to say your point. Give four number one picks for Bane. All right, second category here. What's your five year plan? Not to die. You have five seconds to name an MLB team who has the most wins over the past five years. MLB team with the most wins over the past five years. We'll take the top 16. Good one, Desager.
Steve Covino
Did anyone say Atlanta? Yes, I just did.

F
Guardians. Yep. 13, 410. Two left on the list.
Steve Covino
Covino, the Orioles.
F
Orioles not on the list.
Danny G
Steve and Orlando.
F
Yeah, there were two. Two left. So we had the Mariners with 416 at number 10. And rounding out the bottom of the list. Yeah, right where we're done, right?
Rich Davis
I think so.
Steve Covino
Not me and Steve.
Danny G
No, there's two left.
Rich Davis
There's two left. But I had Mariners written down, so give me the other one.

Danny G
20 seconds here.
Rich Davis
Starbucks are Red Sox.
F
Actually, yes.
Danny G
Time ran out, though. We're gonna give that to Steve in Orlando.
Steve Covino
I apologize. I heard the music.
Danny G
It's not my fault, right? Covino and Steven Orlando on the board.
Steve Covino
We go to the guest, though.
Danny G

Steve Covino
Oh, no.
Danny G
In 22 seasons, how many total touchdowns did Tom Brady throw? Regular season and postseason, 22 seasons. Total TDs thrown by Tom Brady.

Danny G
It's just whoever comes closest. Great job by all you guys in the game. What a battle and double talk. Davis. The question is, since it went to ot, do you still want to send your. Your Swiggy to Steve in Orlando?

Podcast Summary: The Dan Patrick Show – "The Best Of Covino & Rich"
Release Date: June 17, 2025
Host/Authors: iHeartPodcasts and Dan Patrick Podcast Network
Episode: The Best Of Covino & Rich
The episode kicks off shortly after the promotional segments, diving directly into the primary topics of discussion between hosts Steve Covino, Rich Davis, and guest Danny G. The conversation is lively, filled with humor, and centers around significant events in the sports world.
One of the major highlights of the episode is the excitement surrounding Shohei Ohtani's return to pitching for the Los Angeles Dodgers. This event is so significant that both hosts agree it might overshadow other major sports events happening simultaneously.
Steve Covino expresses his enthusiasm:
“I think everything takes a backseat to Shohei tonight. It's his first pitching appearance since August 23, 2023. Please don't get hurt.” ([07:21])
Rich Davis emphasizes the magnitude:
“I've never claimed to be a die-hard NBA fan. So I'll tell you straight up, honest, I'm way more excited to see Shohei take the mound tonight.” ([10:10])
The hosts delve into the implications of Ohtani's return, discussing fan expectations, the potential impact on the Dodgers’ performance, and the broader significance for baseball. They debate whether a baseball story can truly eclipse the NBA Finals Game 5, highlighting Ohtani's global popularity and his unique two-way player status.
Alongside Ohtani's return, the hosts discuss the crucial Game 5 of the NBA Finals. They analyze the teams' performances, the stakes of the game, and its potential outcomes. However, they consistently circle back to how Ohtani's comeback is capturing more attention than the high-stakes basketball match.
Steve Covino predicts Shohei's prominence:
“Shohei trumps everything. Everything takes a backseat to Shohei, including game five tonight, NBA Finals.” ([20:47])
Rich Davis counters slightly but still aligns with the primary sentiment:
“I think Game Five is a crucial game five, but it's not, hey, someone's winning tonight.” ([15:17])
The conversation underscores the rarity of a single athlete’s return having such a dominating influence over other major sports narratives.
Another significant point of discussion is Giancarlo Stanton's return to Major League Baseball after enduring elbow problems that caused him to miss an entire season.
The hosts discuss Stanton's role in the Yankees, his performance metrics, and how his return adds depth to the team. They compare his return to Ohtani's, acknowledging the excitement but reiterating that Ohtani still holds the spotlight.
A significant segment features Joey Chestnut, the legendary competitive eater, discussing his return to the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest. This marks his 16th championship, aiming for his 17th title.
Rich Davis welcomes Chestnut:
“Joey Chestnut, everybody. There he is, our guy. What's up, Joey?” ([37:33])
Joey Chestnut shares insights on his preparation and resolve:
“I've made a new world record with baloney. And in Knoxville, Tennessee. So I. I not annihilated my old record. So my body's ready.” ([49:43])
The conversation explores Chestnut's strategies, his relationship with fellow competitor Patrick Bertoletti, and the personal challenges he faces returning after a hiatus. They humorously compare his impact on hot dog eating to Caitlin Clark’s influence on the WNBA, debating the cultural significance of both athletes.
Rich Davis asks a pointed question:
“Are you more important to hot dog eating than Caitlin Clark is to the WNBA?” ([40:31])
Joey Chestnut responds with respect for Clark:
“Caitlin Clark, have you met her? She is amazing. Yeah, dude, I'm nothing compared to her. She really is amazing.” ([40:54])
Chestnut emphasizes his commitment to Nathan's Hot Dogs and his intent to set new records, highlighting his dedication and the sense of unity his participation brings to the Fourth of July celebrations.
Mid-episode, the hosts engage in an entertaining trivia game titled "Last One Standing," where they compete in sports-related questions. This segment showcases their camaraderie, quick thinking, and extensive sports knowledge.
The trivia covers topics like MLB home run leaders, NFL rushing quarterbacks, and all-time RBI leaders. The competition is fierce, with Rich Davis emerging as the winner after a tie-breaker round involving Tom Brady's career touchdowns.
Steve Covino jokes about his status:
“I apologize. I heard the music.” ([61:27])
Rich Davis celebrates his victory:
“Congrats to Dickie Davis with the victory.” ([68:12])
This segment adds a dynamic and playful element to the episode, highlighting the hosts' expertise and friendly rivalry.
As the episode nears its end, the hosts wrap up discussions, reiterate their excitement for upcoming events like Joe's return to the hot dog contest and Shohei's pitching appearance. They encourage listeners to tune in for live broadcasts from upcoming events, such as the live show from Las Vegas at Circa.
Steve Covino emphasizes Joey's impact:
“When you think about what brings Americans together, It's Joey Chestnut, 4th of July... Joey Chestnut's back.” ([50:23])
Rich Davis reflects on the cultural significance:
“There was a void there, and it didn't unite people the way it normally does.” ([43:17])
“Please don't get hurt.” – Steve Covino ([07:21])
“I'm way more excited to see Shohei take the mound tonight.” – Rich Davis ([10:10])
“Shohei trumps everything.” – Steve Covino ([20:47])
“Caitlin Clark... She really is amazing.” – Joey Chestnut ([40:54])
“Congratulations to Dickie Davis with the victory.” – Rich Davis ([68:12])
"The Best Of Covino & Rich" episode is a vibrant mix of in-depth sports analysis, humorous banter, and engaging interactions with a high-profile guest. The hosts effectively balance discussions on major sporting events with lighthearted segments, providing listeners with both insightful commentary and entertaining entertainment. Joey Chestnut's appearance adds a unique flavor, bridging the worlds of competitive eating and mainstream sports. Overall, the episode serves as a testament to the hosts' chemistry and their ability to captivate a diverse audience.
