You are listening to the Dan Patrick show on Fox Sports Radio. Ross Tucker, CBS Sports, Westwood One NFL college football analyst, host of the Ross Tucker Football Podcast. And he was also hosting Westwood One's live NFL schedule release show last night. Ross, great to see you. What stood out from the schedule release last night?
Ross Tucker
Well, I think the first thing that stood out to me, Dan, is that Westwood One even has a schedule release show on the radio and that they asked me to do it. I'm as curious as anybody to hear what the ratings are like for people hearing me talk about the schedule that comes out. It's really unbelievable.
Jason Kidd
You know, Ross, it's, it's kind of like this show. We don't want to know the numbers. It's just let, let us assume a lot of people are watching and listen, that's all. Don't get caught up in that.
Ross Tucker
I mean, it's changed so much from when I was a player. But like the Today show and Good Morning America, they're like announcing these games during the NBA playoffs, which is hilarious, by the way. Happy birthday, Dan. I'm honored to be on during your birthday. Please don't talk about wings and a nice sow. I'm about to have like a yogurt parfait or something in my house. But, you know, so it's so funny. Dan, as a former player, the first thing that jumped out to me about the schedule is the Cowboys. My mind is blown right now. They get four weekends off. Okay? They have four Thursday games, all right? Now two of those are back to back. So they'll just have a regular week when they have them back to back, but they have a buy. And then those other three Thursday games If you're a player and you have a Thursday game, you get the weekend off. So, you know, fans don't look at this as much as like a player does, but it used to be you only have one bye week and maybe you get the weekend off, but the coach still might have you something doing something on Friday. The Cowboys players having four weekends off during football season is like the craziest thing I've ever seen.
Jason Kidd
Okay, but do you think like, like, why would the NFL do this?
Ross Tucker
Well, because they want to put the Cowboys in as many standalone games as possible.
Jason Kidd
Even if they're not going to be good. The over under seven and a half wins.
Ross Tucker
It's unbelievable. You know what, it doesn't matter that they care about the ratings. I literally just interviewed Mike north, the VP of broadcasting for the NFL for the Ross Tucker podcast, and I was really curious about Thanksgiving. Right. The Thanksgiving Day game is Chiefs, Cowboys. And my argument to Mike was everybody watches the Thanksgiving game anyway. Like everybody. Do you know anybody that doesn't have the, the game on the TV on Thanksgiving?
Jason Kidd
Yeah.
Ross Tucker
Their point was, let's see if we can break records. Let's not just say, hey, everybody's going to watch anyway. We're going to get 35 million people. Let's see how far we can take this thing and push the lim limit. And the Chiefs and the Cowboys are easily the two highest rating teams in the NFL right now, which is why they put them together on Thanksgiving.
Jason Kidd
The first thing that jumped out at me is the Steelers playing the jets to open the season. And do you do this as just a. Oh, we didn't realize that. Or is it. Well, of course we're going to open up with this because Aaron Rodgers is going to play Week 1 for the Steelers.
Ross Tucker
Well, at a minimum, they know that Justin Fields, it's an awkward situation because he got benched last year. The Steelers tried to resign him this offseason. They wanted him when they couldn't get Matthew Stafford. They wanted to bring Fields back, but not enough. They didn't pay him enough. And Fields probably wasn't happy about getting benched. I don't blame him. So he goes to the Jets. So there's already a built in intrigue and storyline.
Jason Kidd
I can't buy into the Justin Fields storyline. I mean, I'm going to watch. I do like Justin Fields, but I'm not going. Oh, man. This is payback time for Justin Fields against the Steelers.
Ross Tucker
The Rogers thing, I think that they strongly suspect Rogers will play for the Steelers and that obviously takes to Another level, which I think brings up a really interesting point at this point. Dan, why hasn't Aaron signed yet? Okay, you could have made the argument if he's going to play. You could have made the argument he wanted to wait to see how the draft played out. Right? At this point, the only reasonable. I'll say this, there's two reasonable arguments for why he hasn't signed yet. One is that you never know what happened to other teams like Derek Carr and the Saints retiring and theoretically that gives him another option. Or two, he doesn't want to take crap from people like me for not being at the off season program. He doesn't want to go to Pittsburgh in May. He does not want to do OTAs. He does not want to do minicamp. He's going to wait as long as he can so he doesn't get criticism for that. I got news for you, Aaron, I'm going to criticize you anyway if you know you're going to go to the Steelers and you're with a new team, a new offense with Arthur Smith. All those other guys are out there with phase two of the off season program right now. Don't tell me you're committed. Don't tell me you want to win games this year. Don't tell me it's a priority if you're not there working with your new teammates in your new offense.
Jason Kidd
I'm trying to figure out though, some of these teams who are going to be in primetime, like the Dolphins. Well, the Dolphins have like five primetime games, correct? Why?
Ross Tucker
Dan, we're, we're sharing a brain here. That was one of the things I was going to bring up. If you brought it up, the, the teams, I'm surprised. So the primetime games is the most interesting aspect of the schedule release because that's the NFL telling you who they think will be good or interesting and who they think won't. Right. So no primetime games for the Browns, Titans or Saints. Titans may be the most interesting there since they just had the number one overall pick who people already feel like got disrespected. But the Dolphins, I think the Chargers is interesting that they got five primetime games. The Falcons, the Atlanta Falcons. Okay, five primetime games. Why, like they're not even the favorite in the NFC south, which isn't a great division. The Bucks are. And then I think the Niners is interesting. Right? The NFL is betting on a big comeback from the Niners. But I agree, the Dolphins jumped out to me for sure. Among that group of team, they all get five primetime games. Where The Titan Saints and Browns get zero.
Jason Kidd
You don't want to see the Browns in prime time, do you? Unless Shador Sanders is playing.
Ross Tucker
I do want to see him. You know why? Because I think it's going to be Shador Sanders or Dylan Gabriel starting. If you look at the trade they.
Jason Kidd
Made week one, I don't know about.
Ross Tucker
Week one, but I think both of those kids are going to start a bunch of games this year so that the Browns find out what they have in them.
Jason Kidd
I mean, but could you imagine this? Ross, we're talking to Ross Tucker. Okay, what if Shador Sanders ends up starting for the Browns and Aaron Rodgers doesn't play for the Steelers and they have Mason Rudolph and they decided to pass on Shador Sanders. I think Shador Sanders is going to play. He's going to start games this year for the Browns. But Pittsburgh we thought was going to take him and they passed on him. Well, you know, everybody did. But that to me, could you imagine if he starts for the Browns and let's say he is good, you have Mason Rudolph and you decided to pass on Shador Sanders. How do you think that's going to go over in Pittsburgh?
Ross Tucker
Not real well. Especially when they could have taken him with that third round pick. You know, you can argue, okay, he's not worth the first rounder. They didn't have a second rounder when they passed on him in the third round. I was floored because he had this great meeting with Mike Tomlin. By the way, Mike Tomlin evidently has a lot of great meetings. He had a great meeting with Aaron Rodgers. He had a terrific meeting with Shador Sanders. You know what the problem is? Neither one of those guys played for the Steelers.
Jason Kidd
What's the meanings were amazing. All surgeries are successful surgeries on athletes, right? All Mike Tomlin interviews are great interviews. You know, the only team that we've heard like the Giants didn't have a good interview with Shador Sanders. Like that came out and everybody criticized the reporters. Hey, you know, put a name to this. It's, you know, whatever. They didn't have a good meeting with Shador Sanders. But I do think he's going to start games for them and I think that that's going to be an interesting storyline. No primetime games. I don't know if there's any flex in at any point during the season where you go, you know what, let's take the Cleveland Browns because of Shador Sanders. I would do that.
Ross Tucker
I totally agree. Let's look at this logically, right? If you Think about what the Browns did with the Travis Hunter trade and getting the Jaguars first round pick in 2026. They clearly, I think, realize they don't have a franchise quarterback. They need to try to find one. And what I would argue is why does it make sense? I mean, maybe they'll do it for a couple games, but does it make sense to start Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett this year? The Browns are not going to the Super Bowl. They're highly unlikely to even go to the playoffs. I think that they took Gabriel and then in particular Shador Sanders. I think they thought it was value. I think it's a couple of lottery tickets. Let both these guys start five or six games this year. Maybe we hit on one of them, maybe one of them is the starter and then we can use those two first round picks next year to make the team better around them. If not, no harm, no foul. We'll get our franchise quarterback next year with these two first round picks in a draft that's considered to be much better at the quarterback position.
Jason Kidd
Would you rather watch Travis Hunter play or should or Sanders play?
Ross Tucker
Oh, I'm gonna say Travis Hunter. I think I'm curious about Shador just like everybody else is. But I'm fascinated by Travis Hunter. I told you last time I was on I think he's the best college football player I've ever seen and I just want to see him play both ways, see how well it goes and see what he is on both sides of the ball and if it makes sense, like if he's an above average starter on both sides and he' playing a lot of snaps, does that make sense? Or would you rather have him try to specialize in one and be elite? Because average starters get one salary, elite players or above average starters get one salary, elite players get paid a lot more. This is we've never seen it before and I'm fascinated to see how it plays out.
Jason Kidd
Great to see you. Thank you Ross.

Joining us now, hall of Famer Jason Kidd, Mav's head coach and won an NBA championship with the mavs back in 2011. Two time Olympic gold medalist. We were just wondering, where do you rank on the all time assist list? Let's go around the room and guess. Where is J Kid on the all time list there? Todd?
Dan Patrick
Third.
Jason Kidd
Third. Okay. Seaton Two. Marvin. Third. Paul two. I'm gonna go four. Where is Jay Kidd on the all time assist list? Stockton number one, Chris Paul. New number two spot, Jason Kidd in.
Dan Patrick
The three spot, LeBron James on his heels.
Jason Kidd
Is LeBron going to catch J Kid? He's got 508 to go, man. You're getting kicked, getting kicked down here, man. How are you doing?
Dan Flores
I'm doing great, Dan. I'm doing great. Yes, that happens. I didn't play long enough.
Jason Kidd
Best passer though, in the history of the game is who not who had the most assists. Best passer.
Dan Flores
Best passer. I'm going to go with Stockton.
Jason Kidd
Why is that?
Dan Flores
I think you know the bounce pass. Yeah. Big hands could take it off the dribble, could pause with it. Some would say it's maybe double dribble, but I think he, he knew how to manipulate the, the ball off the dribble and being able to find his target. And he has some pretty good targets.
Jason Kidd
Okay, but when did carrying become legal.
Dan Flores
In the NBA in 1960.
Dan Patrick
60.
Dan Flores
Well, it's always been a part of the game.
Jason Kidd
Well, no, no. Like now it's just you can have your hand on the bottom of the ball and then go, was it Iverson who started it?
Dan Flores
I'm, I don't think it was Iverson. I think it's the guy we were just talking about.
Jason Kidd
Stockton was the first guy to carry the ball.
Dan Flores
I think if you look at Stockton, he knew how to manipulate the dribble.
Jason Kidd
Was he dirty?
Dan Flores
He was smart.
Jason Kidd
Where were you on lottery night?
Dan Flores
Lottery night? I was in Newport beach at a board meeting for Gold rental and I thought, okay, well, we're gonna probably fall backwards instead of going forward. So my phone started to go crazy during the meeting and I kept texting the person back saying, are you sure it's not. You're missing a one? Because you, he goes, you're, you're in the top four. And I mean 14. And he goes, no. And he goes, I think you just got one. I go, you mean. We stayed at 11 and. And then my phone started going crazy. So that's where I was.
Jason Kidd
Wait, you're not even watching the lottery.
Dan Flores
I, you know, things just weren't going well for us.
Jason Kidd
Really? What. What else has happened?
Dan Flores
A lot of injuries. A lot of injuries. But I just felt, you know, we were going to stay around 11, if not go backwards, just the way that things were going for us this year, but incredible to get number one. Everyone's excited. The organization, the city, the Mavs fans, and also the head coach. So we're really excited about being number one.
Jason Kidd
Planning on keeping the pick and taking Cooper Flag.
Dan Flores
Yes. I'm just the coach, so, yes, I would say that we're all concentrating on number one. The draft is deep and so. But as the name you just brought up, I think we're all focused on.
Jason Kidd
Have you spoken to Cooper Flag?
Dan Flores
I have not spoken the Cooper Flag. I don't want to break any of the rules and get us in trouble, so I want to make sure that when I do answer these questions that, you know, the speculation is Cooper Flag, but there's, you know, we got to go through the process.
Jason Kidd
Okay, so you would get in trouble if you did reach out to Cooper Flag before the draft?
Dan Flores
Yeah, well, no, not. Not technically. Once we bring him in, we'll get.
Jason Kidd
Are you not allowed to say his name?
Dan Flores
I would. I'm trying to be politically correct here and make sure that we don't get in trouble and I don't step on any toes.
Jason Kidd
Okay, so the kid from Duke.
Dan Flores
There we go.
Jason Kidd
Are you.
Dan Flores
We're excited. We're excited.
Jason Kidd
I don't want to get you fined. Okay, thank you.
Dan Flores
Thank you. I can't afford to find. And so we're excited about the kid at Duke. I can't wait to talk to the coach over there, Coach Shire, and also a good friend of mine, Coach K, mentor and get some background on the kid at Duke. Really excited about this opportunity.
Jason Kidd
You were 21 as a rookie, right?
Dan Flores
Yes.
Jason Kidd
I can't imagine what 19 is going to be like for the kids from Duke.
Dan Flores
How.
Jason Kidd
How is that different? Or has the game made it easier for that transition for somebody that young?
Dan Flores
No, I don't know if it's easier. I think 18, he's going to be drafted. He'll be 18. He doesn't turn 19 until December. And so just understanding. He's young, but he's very talented, can play both ends and so being able to have older players. And when I say that out of respect, they're not dinosaurs, but when you look at the age of 30, Kai AD guys that are here, Clay can definitely help him with the process of going through a rookie season and the.
Jason Kidd
Kid from Duke doesn't have to walk in and be the savior like he probably would have been in Washington, D.C. or maybe Charlotte, that you can kind of ease him in to being a third or fourth option on the team.
Dan Flores
Yeah, I think this is a great situation for. For him. I think when you talk about the different guys that we have already on the team, the pressure of living up to number one will be a lot easier with the talent around him. When you talk about the other clubs, he would have to, you know, produce right away at a high. And so I think this is a great situation for him to grow his game where the pressure isn't as high, but we are playing for a championship, and so it will be a lot of fun.
Jason Kidd
Jason Kidd, hall of Famer Mavericks head coach how were you told that you had just traded Luca?
Dan Flores
I was told by my boss, Nico, that we were going to make a change.
Jason Kidd
But where. Where? Give me the. Give me this scenario.
Dan Flores
Hotel. This is in the hotel in Cleveland. And so he said the news was going to hit an hour, and. And that's how it went down. And so when he told me, I started. I went back to my room to start figuring out how we're going to use AD and Christie because of this change. And so.
Jason Kidd
So you found out. You didn't even get a chance to argue?
Dan Flores
No, there was. There's no arguing. This is. This is what was going to take place. And so for me is to. To move forward from past experiences as a player. I've been traded the day after Christmas, I think, from Dallas to Phoenix, and thinking they were trading Jimmy or Jamal, and they told me that they were trading me. And so. And so just understanding that the train keeps moving. And I thought my players and my coaching staff did an incredible job with, you know, once they heard the news of preparing to keep moving forward and. And especially with all the trade and the injuries, I thought we did an incredible job.
Jason Kidd
When's the last time you spoke to Luca?
Dan Flores
I text him on the. That morning, and that's the last time I've talked to him.
Jason Kidd
How did he respond to your text?
Dan Flores
I don't think he was too happy. And just again, from the experience of being traded, you know, maybe being surprised, you know, upset feelings are high. But again, I love the opportunity of coaching Luca. He's an incredible person, and we all know his talent is one of the best in the world. And so, you know, again, my mindset is to deal with the cars that I'm dealt and and keep pushing forward. And I've always said this publicly and privately. I wish Luca the best. He's one of the best players in the world.
Jason Kidd
I thought you were going to say that. You meet with Nico in his hotel room, he tells you he's trading Luca, and then you go back to your hotel room and cry. But. But. But that didn't happen, right?
Dan Flores
I didn't cry. I was more or less trying to figure out how we're going to make this thing work. You know, this is a big trade.
Jason Kidd
But who do you call first after Nico tells you that you're trading Luca?
Dan Flores
I didn't call anybody. I put my phone down and looked at the ceiling and started trying to brainstorm of how this is going to go down. I did not call anybody once this hit. And my job as the coach is to make sure that we all are pushing in the right direction. There was going to be a lot of questions that morning from staff and players, and I thought Nico did a great job of. Of handling it by having the meeting and. And for us, pushing forward.
Jason Kidd
Anybody have a better handle than Kyrie in that. In NBA history?
Dan Flores
Oh, I'm gonna say no, but I'm gonna say there's some close seconds when you talk about Isaiah Thomas. Detroit. Isaiah Thomas.
Jason Kidd
Underrated, by the way.
Dan Flores
Oh, very underrated. Very underrated.
Jason Kidd
Why. Why is that?
Dan Flores
I think sometimes it's. It's our fault. We don't. We don't bring up Isaiah. Jay Williams, White Chocolate. I thought his handle and his passing is incredible storytelling. I don't know if we. We don't do a good. Good enough job of storytelling with Isaiah or our past players. And so I think Isaiah would be right there as one B. Yeah, but.
Jason Kidd
I think with Isaiah, likability, the way they played, they were the bad boys. You know, they were trying to hurt Jordan. And I. I think that maybe that plays into it with Isaiah.
Dan Flores
Well, I don't know if they were just trying to hurt Jordan. They were trying to hurt everybody.
Jason Kidd
But if the Pistons don't treat Michael that way, Michael doesn't start weightlifting. And like, that made Michael even greater. They're responsible for unleashing, you know, the new and improved Michael Jordan.
Dan Flores
Yeah, I think, you know, sometimes when we look at things that take place in our league, some are looked upon as negatives, but a lot of players or coaches use them as positives and. And try to turn it into something and, as you said, unleashes the beast in. In Michael. And he took that and ran with it, got stronger his game was. His talent was already elite. And so I think he. He used that as motivation to. To become the best in the world.
Jason Kidd
Do you remember facing him the first time?
Dan Flores
Yes.
Jason Kidd
Oh, what happened?
Dan Flores
No, it was actually nice. He was nice to me. I'll never forget. I ended up on him. Unfortunately, I didn't know how I. How the switch happened, but he has me in the post and all I can think about is just turn around and fade away and keep it simple and nice. But he went baseline and he took off. And unfortunately, my swipe, I didn't. I missed it. And I was like, oh, this is going to be on. On espn and he's going to dunk it and look and, you know, do what he does. But he just did a nice little reverse layup and looked and kind of winked. And I said, oh, man, I'm glad he didn't dunk it, but he took it easy on me.
Jason Kidd
But when did you realize he was. Than you?
Dan Flores
Oh, before tip off.
Jason Kidd
Well, you know, the. You guys have egos. I mean, like, Larry Bird had to get to a point where he said, you know what? He's the best player in the game. My magic had. You guys are, you know, pretty tough when you're going to relinquish something like that.
Dan Flores
Yeah. But I think we all understood when we. We have to be realistic, understanding Michael is the best. And so coming in as a rookie, you know, you wanted that challenge. You wanted to compete against the best, but understanding he was going to win majority of those battles and. And he did. And. And so you couldn't wait for that game to be over so that you can go play someone else that you can take a second.
Jason Kidd
Maybe they'll write a book on this year for the Dallas Mavericks one day, just this year of everything that's happened because. Hard to believe, right?
Dan Flores
Yeah, I think you're right. I think there's someone's gonna write a.
Jason Kidd
Book or 30 for 30 on ESPN.
Dan Flores
There could be a 30 for 30 for sure. There's enough content, you know, there when you talk about just there was in, you know, season within a season and there's maybe three seasons just with the trade and with all the injuries that we had, trying to keep, you know, pushing forward and finding a way into the playing game and winning one and unfortunately coming up short against Memphis, but just everything that took place. I think there is a book there and then probably a 30 for 30.
Jason Kidd
Good to talk to you again. Thanks for joining us.
Dan Flores
Happy birthday.
Dan Patrick
Thank you.
Jason Kidd
Thank you.
Dan Flores
You look great, man.
Jason Kidd
What did you get me?
Dan Flores
Well, I was going to say a jump shot, but you already believe that you can shoot, so.
Jason Kidd
Well, now we don't. We don't want to go down the road, do we? We don't want to go down memory lane because.
Dan Patrick
Do we?
Dan Flores
Yeah, why not? It's your birthday.
Dan Patrick
You. You.
Jason Kidd
I go to Dallas to shoot against you, right?
Dan Flores
Yes.
Jason Kidd
I come to down. I fly to Dallas to play, you know. You in a game of horse?
Dan Flores
Yes.
Jason Kidd
And what happened after practice? Who went home and left me there out shooting by myself? You did.
Dan Flores
Well, I. You. I forfeit it. So you automatically.
Jason Kidd
Okay. Yeah. And then all of a sudden, who becomes a great three point shooter? You do.
Dan Flores
Yeah. You turn me into a great three point shooter. So you get credit. I'm giving you credit where it's due. And you turn me into a three point shooter.
Jason Kidd
You're welcome. You're welcome. You're welcome. You're welcome. So thank you. I don't need a jump shot. We know that. You know, maybe. What?
Dan Flores
Putter driver.
Jason Kidd
How about this? How about a autographed jersey from the kid from Duke?
Dan Flores
Oh, Don.
Jason Kidd
Okay, here we go.
Dan Flores
Easy.
Jason Kidd
Just making dreams come true.
Dan Flores
There you go.
Jason Kidd
Thank you, buddy. That's Jason Kidd, hall of Famer. Yeah. I told you guys the story. I told you the story. I went to Dallas, we had a great relationship and I said, I will beat you in a shooting contest. And I'm there in the stands waiting for practice to end. And I'm waiting. It ends and I go, where's Jason? The clubhouse. Guy goes, oh, he left. And I go, he left. And he admitted he knew that I could shoot. There he is, right there. He just came back. He wants it. He knows it's true. He knows it's true.

Mike Tirico, NBC Sports host, Play by play. He's doing it all. He's got Sunday Night Football. He's got the Preakness. What doesn't Mike do? Mike joins us on the program. What don't you do, Mike?
Dan Patrick
Do I have to sing Happy Birthday?
Jason Kidd
That'd be nice. I'd like to hear them.
Dan Patrick
Happy birthday to you. What do you do for you? What do you do for your birthday? Do you have a cake? What kind of cake do you like? Special dinner. What's the DP birthday?
Jason Kidd
I don't. You should ask my guys, the Danets, what they're going to do for me.
Dan Patrick
I want to know what you want. This is about you. It's your day.
Jason Kidd
Okay. I would. I would say you joining me on the show. Thank you. I thought we were getting Michael Jordan since he's part of the NBC family. Nathan said, no, it's Michael Chico. Because I said. I said, get me Michael and he got me you. So, so. But it's.
Dan Patrick
Do you remember? Wait, it's good. Do you remember when. When Mark Jones, who's still doing a great job doing The NBA on espn. Do you remember when we were all in Bristol and Mark was doing the NBA Today? And Mark would do the shot fake and then the fadeaway jumper at the end of the show? Right?
Jason Kidd
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
Right. Yeah. I think Jonesy. I think Jonesy interviewed Michael after a Finals game that. You used to do that a whole bunch, too. Right. And I. I think. I think Jones. You said MJ in the house with the other mj.
Jason Kidd
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yes. But I think Mark Jones used to dribble, like, behind his back, and then he'd say, if you're at the end of your NBA rope, tie a knot or.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, exactly. But I remember when Mark would do that show and with the analyst on some of those shows, God rest his Soul, the great Dr. Jack Ramsey and Dr. Jack be sitting in the chair and Jonesy would be jumping up, faking and taking the jump.
Jason Kidd
Right.
Dan Patrick
Those are good days.
Jason Kidd
NBA Today, Mark Jones, so damn posse. Yeah. Yeah. Mark Jones is the first announcer I ever heard say, somebody's taking it to the house.
Dan Patrick
Oh, is that right?
Jason Kidd
First guy I remember, and I remember management, a couple of members of management, no longer there, who said, gotta put an end to that.
Dan Patrick
Oh, man, Jonesy. Two things about Jonesy loves. Loves his basketball. Awesome vocabulary, great storyteller. Jonesy has been doing games for a long time at a really good level. Like one of those people who are underappreciated for the amount of work, the longevity. College hoop, NBA, college football. You're right. I don't remember that specific incident. But I do remember somebody, whether it was you or someone else, saying that Mark was the first guy to say that, taken into the house. And that's become, you know, synonymous with touchdowns. So good for Jonesy. I didn't. I didn't think we talked Jonesy, but there you go.
Jason Kidd
I didn't either. Okay, so.
Dan Patrick
Yes.
Jason Kidd
Do you know what role Michael Jordan plays on the NBA coverage on NBC?
Dan Patrick
Exactly. No. Special contributor part is what I do know. I think it'll be one of those things that evolves over time. I'm excited that he would even consider doing it.
Jason Kidd
How would you use him? How would you use him?
Dan Patrick
How would I. I don't know, without talking with him what his level of granular NBA following the league transaction by transaction level is right now. But from time in management and ownership and obviously the unbelievable playing career and the way the game has evolved, I think there's a unique space there to hear from Michael where the game is, where it's going. And I'm Curious what he thinks about a three on one and guys run to the three point line. I'm curious what he thinks of the guy who wanted to play so often about the amount of play guys have and, and the style of the way the game is played now on both ends of the floor. So even, even that alone, I would be curious. But. So I don't think it's one of those. You don't want Michael, I don't think sitting at the desk trading opinions of the moment on this or that. I'd like to hear it at a high level. How that manifests itself, I don't know. I hope I get to be involved with it a little bit. But look, any chance to hear Michael Jordan talk basketball, I'm signing up for. So, yeah, I don't, I don't think.
Jason Kidd
He'S going to be at the desk. I think maybe you could treat it like Kobe did. Details where Kobe kind of went into the lab and said, and you, you know, you have to have somebody with Mike to kind of help him, guide him along with things. What do you see here? What would you do here? And, and then maybe you could get that on his terms so then he can go out and play 36 holes, which is really important.
Dan Patrick
And you know what, that's our life goal. We all say, I want to be like Mike. I want to roll up and crank out 36 holes a day. So look, to have anything related to Michael Jordan connected to the NBA is really good. I did get to hang out on Monday in New York with Reggie Miller and Jamal Crawford and Vince Carter part of our team. I saw Mellon at the derby. I'm just excited about our group and it'll be fun to get back into the league and to do with guys who are, you know, contemporary to the league and still connected in so many ways is going to be a blast. And whatever Michael brings is pretty special.
Jason Kidd
Mike Chirico, NBC Sports host and play by play voice NBC Sunday Night Football. Also, you're going to be hosting the Preakness Stakes coming up this weekend. At least I hope so. Planning on it?
Dan Patrick
I'd like to make it through. Yeah. At least get through one race this time.
Jason Kidd
Okay. When did you know you were in trouble? At the Kentucky Derby.
Dan Flores
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
So for those who don't know, I have a nut allergy and a severe reaction which probably every seven or eight years it happens. Maybe you just eat something that's contaminated with nuts. And I, I knew I wasn't feeling well when I got up to the studio, which is above the paddock, which was about 2:15 or so. And I was going on at 2:30. That's when our window started and when Ahmed far did an awesome job. Fill in. That's a hard show. It's one of the hardest shows that we do every year just in terms of the moving parts.
Jason Kidd
And Ahmed, did he bring you your lunch that day?
Dan Patrick
That's, you know, that's what people are asking. And we have not gotten to the bottom of that. Investigation continues at this, at this moment. It's so funny. So many people asked Ahmed that. Like, Ahmed's the nicest person on planet Earth. Please.
Jason Kidd
But you know what you talk about late scratches. I didn't think it would be an announcer. I thought it would be a horse. Michael.
Ross Tucker
But.
Dan Patrick
But do I get credit for the start then? It's like going in to keep your consecutive game streak going. I got the start. I just didn't, didn't get, didn't get to the finish line. So I knew about 10 minutes before I wasn't feeling great. But sometimes you can get past that and you feel better the rest of the day. And I was just starting to get worse and then your throat closes and all that. So I wasn't, I was in bad shape there in terms of allergy and allergic reaction for a little while. The positive, if there was other than Ahmed doing a great job, was that I didn't know 30 million Americans have food allergies of some sort. And the fact, because they said, oh, you just want to say you're under the weather, say I had an allergic reaction and I have a nut allergy. There's no reason to hide it. It's the truth. And I heard from so many people, including moms who said, you know, our kid has a nut allergy, is embarrassed to talk about. Thanks for bringing it up.
Jason Kidd
Up.
Dan Patrick
So we're able to at least mention that on the today's show and get that out there.
Jason Kidd
So some folks you're the spokesperson for. None. Okay.
Dan Patrick
No, I'm not.
Jason Kidd
Somehow. Yeah, you're making money now. Another gig here.
Dan Patrick
There is, there is no, trust me, there is no money involved with that. But, but did you know, Dan? Did you know?
Jason Kidd
Okay.
Dan Patrick
Hi, how are you? Did you know that May is National Food Allergy Awareness Month?
Jason Kidd
I do know now.
Dan Patrick
There you go. I, I did not know that. Just having fun with a bit too. I used to do with Chris Myers on SportsCenter at 2:30 in the morning back in the day. But yeah, anyway, so thankfully Ahmed was here. Thankfully everybody looked after me, I was fine by Sunday afternoon. And I'm very careful about what I eat always and extra careful.
Dan Flores
Now.
Jason Kidd
NFL schedule release last night, what stood out?
Dan Patrick
Hey, you know, you always look for who's in primetime and I think with more primetime windows in general, it's become a little more interesting to see who gets those extra games. In Kansas City with seven primetime games, so many games for a team to be in primetime. You know, a lot of the people you'd expect Dallas with six, Detroit, Washington five. But interesting see teams like Atlanta and the Chargers, maybe teams that, that the folks in the league think might be good teams that other people aren't thinking about to see them show up five times in prime time. I love the fact that we get to open with Dallas and Philly and then come back with with Josh Allen against Lamar Jackson in Buffalo to open the season. A redo of that playoff game with Baltimore and Buffalo. So we'll be off and running with the Sunday night schedule. It's some good stuff.
Jason Kidd
Do you read anything into Steelers against the jets opening week?
Dan Patrick
I. I'm very hopeful that we're reading something into Steelers packers in mid October, which look on its own because of the legacy of both franchises. It's a great game, right? But man, Aaron Rodgers is back with the Packers. I was back with the Steelers and playing the packers for probably what would be the only time in his career, man, that would be something, something incredible. That would be an incredible scene. Would be a special, special night for all of us involved. So we wait and wonder if Aaron's going to come back or not. And if he does, that'd be pretty cool.
Jason Kidd
You think he will?
Dan Patrick
I don't know. But whenever he calls McAfee and decides to tell him, I guess we'll all find out. I don't know. My gut is at this point he has to have a decision in his heart. Right. Because you're starting to get to that point in May where you're rounding yourself into physical and mental shape. And the Steelers are good quarterback play away from being more than 9 and 8, 10 and 7 and getting in and winning some of those games. I think in that division it gets magnified. Right. When you play Baltimore and you play Cincinnati, you've got to have that play. And Aaron did show at the end of the year, he can make that play. So is he willing to be a part of what they do in Pittsburgh and fit right in? I think it would be a cool last chapter, so I'm hopeful. I have no gut feeling at all. I wish I did, but I don't.
Jason Kidd
The Preakness Stakes after the Kentucky Derby and Sovereignty is not running. And then I wonder, you know, this has happened before, it's not the first time, but is there a way that they can space this out a little more? So you do get more people, more eyes on this and, and that this stays relevant, stays important to, you know, the sports landscape?
Dan Patrick
Thousand percent, Dan. It's, it's pretty easy. You move this race back around Memorial Day weekend or the weekend before either one. And then you move The Belmont to 4th of July weekend or the weekend before you have to react to what's happening. Nobody in Major League Baseball is using a four man rotation in the regular season because resting pitchers and resting your investment less starts has been the way to go. Horse racing is the same thing. They used to wheel horses back every two weeks. Now for the most part, the best thoroughbreds only run once every four, five, six weeks. That's the normal window to bring them back on two weeks rest from Derby to Pre Kiss never. Never happens during the year for these horses. So then why are you taking 21 plus million people that watch the Kentucky Derby, any momentum you might have built and Give the sport 0 chance to build on top of that momentum with Sovereign. If Sovereignty is going for the second leg of Triple Crown, maybe it's not Derby day, but I damn well know sports fans would show up at about 6 o' clock on Saturday to see can he win the second and then build for the Belmont. The Triple Crown's been around for 140 some odd years and you don't want to mess with tradition. I got it. But if you can't follow this idea with anything that works right now in the sport, then we're hurting the sport. So it would behoove everyone involved.
Jason Kidd
Problem is, I see what you did with that behoove. Okay, Behoove.
Dan Patrick
I didn't. I didn't. But thank you.
Jason Kidd
That's, that's why you're always the best. I see.
Dan Patrick
You're always the best.
Jason Kidd
See what you're doing.
Dan Patrick
It'll be smart for the sport. And Maryland does its own thing, says Kentucky. So does New York. So does California. So does Florida. You talk about college football needing a commissioner. This sport needs a commissioner.
Jason Kidd
Have fun this weekend. Be careful what you eat.
Dan Patrick
Thank you, pal. Happy birthday.
Jason Kidd
Happy birthday. Thank you. Thank you. Yeah.
Dan Patrick
All the best.

[20:44]
Personal Anecdotes and Coaching Insights: Jason shares personal stories from his playing days, including memorable games against Michael Jordan, offering listeners a glimpse into the competitive spirit and camaraderie within the NBA:
