Listen to the American west with Dan Flores on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts. You are listening to the Dan Patrick show on Fox Sports Radio. It wasn't pretty, but ok. Oklahoma City tends to do that to you as they shut down the Timberwolves from the start. Minnesota scoring just nine points in the first quarter. SGA had a business like 34. The Thunder have four wins by 30 or more points this postseason. First NBA team in history with four playoff wins of 30 or more in a single postseason. The previous record, three wins of 30 or more. The 2016 Cavs, the 96 Jazz and the 1986 Lakers. Stat of the Day brought to you by Panini America. The official trading cards of this program, but nine first quarter points. So in the last 30 years, there have been a total of six teams who have held somebody to fewer than 10 points in the first quarter of a playoff game. The Thunder have done it twice this postseason. They held Denver to eight first quarter points in game for the second round. They play great defense. I know that people aren't going to tune in to watch great defense, but OKC is just trying to win a title. You know, you don't get style points. Nobody cares about that. If you're winning a championship, it's not kind of how you did it. It's just that you did it. And if it means SGA gets you 35 a game, you play great defense and you, you hopefully get support from your supporting players. And that's what's happened so far. Indiana the same way. And yes, you're going to have people who probably don't watch basketball on a regular basis who are going to lament the fact that if it's Indiana against okc, that's fine with me because you probably aren't watching anyway. Those who are watching will in those who are fans, then you'll be curious. You'll be curious to watch Tyrese Halliburton and sga. We keep trying to look for the, the face of the NBA. Who's the next face of the NBA? Well, it's Anthony Edwards. No, he doesn't want to be. Can Jason Tatum be it? No, he's a great player. He's just not, you know, a star. Sga great player, not a star. You know, there's, there's only a few of them and we've talked about this and it's not meant as a knock. I'm just giving you the reality of will you stop if somebody's playing on TV and go, oh, okay, or you'll Seek out that player or you would actually buy tickets to go watch somebody play. I mean, Joker's great. There's a curiosity to him. I don't know if he's got star power. I think there's. It's curiosity power. Luca has star power. LeBron still has star power. Steph Curry still has star power. And we're trying to anoint the, you know, Giannis still has it. We're trying to anoint somebody as the, the next, the next. We keep. It doesn't take long before we move on from somebody and then you move on to the next guy and then who's the next guy? Anthony Edwards is not ready for it. He doesn't want to be the face of the NBA, but because you get drafted higher, it's different. You know, look at these. Some of these guys who've been drafted mid first round, you know, Giannis Kawhi, you know, they, they weren't rushed to be anything. They were allowed to be something. We wanted, indeed, to be great right away. He wasn't ready, wasn't healthy. Anthony Edwards, you know, when you're drafted that high, it's like, okay, we want to see what you have. They. You get the pleasant surprise, you know, in the mid to late first round or even second round with Joker, and I think we don't allow these. But Anthony Edwards is 23, so you got to be fair to the timeline here. It's just sometimes you see a pocket of greatness and then, because we were looking for the next Jordan. For how long? Well, we're still looking for the next Jordan. Anthony Edwards, he reminds me of Jordan. No, not me. Not yet. I saw Jordan and there's nobody. Jordan reminds me of Jordan. That's it. There's. There's nobody on the list where you go, you know, he kind of looks remind. He plays like, yes, Paul, you know.
David Spade
Kobe was really close and it was really overt. Like, he imitated Jordan, he studied Jordan, and his game offensively was a lot like it. His mannerisms were a lot like it. Kobe came really close.
Michael Kassin
Yeah, he wanted to be Mike. He studied. He wanted the mannerisms, everything about that. He came pretty close, too. Came pretty close. But Anthony Edwards was asked after the loss, if this hurts. It's exciting. I don't know. I don't know why people would think it would hurt. I mean, it's exciting for me. I'm 23. I get to do it a whole bunch of times.
Tim Legler
I'm hurt.
Michael Kassin
More so for myself, for Mike. I came up short for Mike. Like I said, we tried last year, we couldn't get it. We tried again this year. We're gonna try again next year. But hurting is a terrible word to. I'm good. Okay. Said nobody's going to work harder than him in the off season. Good. And, and OKC did show him the ultimate respect because you have Lou Dort, who was just face guarding him. This used to be called a box in one where you had one guy on one guy and then the other four playing pretty much his own. And, and that is the show of respect. But still, Anthony Edwards didn't get any further than he was last year. And Luka took his team to the NBA finals. They're around the same age. Luke is a couple years older, but you know, we're expecting young players. You know, Cooper flag coming in next year. At 18, 19 years of age, he won't have that expectation because he's going to Dallas. He won't be the focal point when he's there. But a lot of these players, when you come in, what are you going to do for me now, you know, Victor Wembanyama, because the team isn't very good. He gets a little bit more of a Runway there. But at certain point it gets to be three years, four years in, then you're like, are you going to win a championship? We, we, we're doing that now at an earlier age than ever. And speaking of age, OKC is the second youngest team to go to the NBA Finals. Everything seems to be lined up for them to create a, whatever the modern day dynasty is. They should be there. They're consistent. You have, you know, it's hard to get guys to play defense. Everybody wants to play offense. But when you have a philosophy, team philosophy, that is defense. And this is the spurs great elixir. This is the magic potion for Greg Popovich. With all of those great teams that he had, they wanted to play great defense and you have to want to play defense. Nobody wants to play defense. But when you do and it's contagious, you know, we talk about offense when somebody's, you know, clicking and then somebody else is clicking. Defense is, you know, that's, that's contagious. Like, damn, he's hustling. He blocked shot. You know, the coming up of the steel, like just whatever those little things are. And okay, OKC has done that. Yes, Marvin. And being a defender pays in the NBA like the term three and D guy. Jayden McDaniels makes $100 million. Isaiah Hardenstein makes $30 million. A year. So it pays. So I'm just not understanding why people were like, why don't need to play defense? Because it pays in the NBA. They're paying people out. The wazoo Pacers at the Knicks. And the Knicks are giving four in game five coming up tonight. All right, poll question. Seaton. What are we going to do? First hour of the program. Exactly what is the wazoo? Will be our first poll question.
David Spade
That's an old school phrase.
Michael Kassin
It is. It is. Yeah. Yeah. It's one that we all use but never question. Like who said. Oh, you know what? I'm going to refer to that as the wazoo checking. Can you check and see how we came up with wazoo on it? Fritzi?
Tim Legler
An old Washington State University thing, probably.
David Spade
That's what they call themselves, too.
Michael Kassin
Yeah. Wazoo up the wazoo. Okay. What else do we have seen? Let's see. We got a couple here from the tow. We might as well start there. Intentionally walking a batter in the first inning Strategy or bush league?
David Spade
It's a great one.
Michael Kassin
Do you believe Caleb Williams wanted to be a Chicago Bear and loves being there? Sure. Definitely not. Oh, boy. Stefan Diggs. I don't know if we're ready to get into that just yet, man. I like. I like Stefan Diggs every time he's been on with us. He's entertaining, but, man, you have to confiscate everybody's phones if you're going to be on your yacht. Not that's first thing you do. We're not. We're not on display here. Everybody loves to record everything. You know, we got to chronicle everything. I don't have to chronicle that. You know, I don't think he's married. Although, isn't he going out with Cardi B? Is that. Yeah, Marvin. He is. So I'm at the next game. See, I. I don't. You don't need that. Well, I mean, she was there and.
David Spade
Putting on way more of a display.
Michael Kassin
Than Steph was, so.
David Spade
Yeah, yeah, she was there in all.
Michael Kassin
Of her cardi b ness. Oh. Oh, okay. But he pulls out some packet that's got something pink in it. I'm not up on what the kids are doing now, but. Seaton, any idea on what that substance. Powder, whatever it might have been? I assumed it was Kool Aid or Fun Dip or. Is that what it was? Some type of powdered sugar candy? Sweet treat? Sweet tarts? Yeah, crushed up sweet tarts. Maybe he likes to put it on his toast. I'm not really sure. Sweethearts and toast. I'M not really sure why you would ask me about that either. Up the wazoo. Yeah, that's where that powder goes right up the wazoo.
David Spade
According to Dictionary.com the first usage of up the wazoo. University of California, Berkeley. A humor newspaper called it, let's run it up your old wazoo, meaning your backside. But the actual definition these days is to extreme degree or in great abundance, like, I've got money coming out my wazoo. It means you have a lot of something.
Michael Kassin
Okay, back to you. All right. Didn't think we were going there this early in the show. Public service, but here we are. Yes, thank you for that. All right, any other poll questions here? We'll get to the Bears situation with Caleb Williams. This story is actually a couple of weeks old. Seth Wickersham has a book on quarterbacks and he had a quote in there. His father didn't want his son to go play for the Bears. That's where quarterbacks go to die. So we'll talk about that. Caleb Williams addresses that. He addressed that yesterday. Anything else, Seton, that we can at least do a drive by on? Yeah, we're gonna actually start with this one from Marvin. When did the Timberwolves book their flights to Cancun? Pre game halftime or right after the game ended? That's gonna be your hour one poll question. Wow. Wow. So you gotta put up a fight. This is one of those that you could have had a really good year in Minnesota. You had a really bad couple of weeks here. Therefore this feels like a disappointment. It didn't feel like they were closer to the NBA Finals. And OKC is only going to get better. And if you're Minnesota and you know, you got the Dante Divincenzo and Julius Randall and so you kind of changed the look of your team. You traded away Carl Anthony Towns, but it didn't feel like they were ready to take that next step. And you know, OKC impeded that next step, that's for sure. And for Shea Gilgis, watching him last night, he he's going to get a bucket. He's going to get wherever he needs to get. And this is what great players do, great scorers do. They know you're going to try to take away one thing and then they know there's another move and another. So there's three that they're thinking now you just take your chances. What are the odds I'm going to get help here. SGA off the dribble is going to get where he needs to go. It's remarkable to see and you know, he's not a three point shooter, he's a, you know, the master of the mid range jumper. But he can get to the hoop. It's not exciting, but it's just greatness. That's what you're seeing. You're seeing a truly great player on display. Fox Sports Radio has the best sports talk lineup in the nation. ESPN NBA analyst and covering the Western Conference finals there with Scott Van Pelt. He'll be covering the NBA Finals as well. That airs exclusively on ABC starting Thursday, June 5. Do you want in on our Larry Bird top pick that I mentioned to Stephen Jackson yesterday? I said, are you prepared for a day when Larry Bird drops out of the top 10 players of all time? Could you see a scenario in your lifetime where Larry Bird is not considered a top 10 player of all time?
Tim Legler
I can see in terms of general consensus, I might not be the best person to ask on this topic because he's not only my favorite athlete of all time, he's also I personally credit him for changing the course of my life, to be perfectly honest with you, because I was on a baseball track until that dude came into the league and I had never really played organized basketball before and he personally made me want to start playing basketball along with a growth spurt at the time. So I legitimately am not overstating it. He changed what I wanted to do and how much I fell in love with the game during that time because I went into high school at exactly the time he came into the NBA.
Michael Kassin
So just seeing him play basketball gave you hope that you could play basketball at a high level?
Tim Legler
I think. Yeah. I mean, you know, even at that time was I Thinking I could play in the NBA one day. I mean, I wanted to be a pro athlete. I thought I was going to be a professional baseball player. So did my father. That was like the goal. But it wasn't just like that. He gave me hope that I could be an NBA player. It was his style of play, their style of play as a team. I admired the Lakers, too, for the way they played. So it was kind of weird. My two favorite players were not. Were rivals. Magic Johnson, Larry Bird were my two favorite players. And they were the two guys that were trying to beat each other every year. It felt like. So I did. Just his flair, his confidence, his passing ability, the way that team passed the ball, that made me really think, that's the beauty of basketball when it's played the right way. It looks like that. And that's why I started to fall in love with it, became obsessed with it. And the rest is kind of history. Like what I did end up doing with my life. You're talking about 45 years now. Basketball has been the center of my life, everything I've built.
Michael Kassin
Jeffrey, thank Larry Bird in person.
Tim Legler
I never thanked him in person. I did have one very cool moment with him. He won't remember it, but of course I'm not going to forget it. It was shooting around, preseason game. I never really caught Larry Bird as a player because he was finishing up, he had back problems, he was about to retire. And I was on the court alone, just he and I, opposite ends of the floor. Shooting before a preseason game. I think it was in Hartford, Connecticut, if I am not mistaken. And I'm like, that's Larry Bird down there. We're the only two out there. Because he went out early. I used to go out early. We're out there shooting. At one point, I kind of drifted to the other end. So we're shooting on the same end of the court, just us and some ball boys. And we shot for a while and I was, you know, I was making them. He was making or both good shooters. And then he. He finished and he walked past me. And as he was walking past me to go to the tunnel to leave the court, he just, without even looking at me or changing the direction of his head, he just said, nice shooting. And he just kept walking. And that validated my life. That was all I needed to hear. I probably should have just quit right then and just like, hey, that's all I needed. I'm good.
Michael Kassin
Watching OKC with Shea, Gilgis, Alexander. He. He's a great player, the mvp. But like how would you describe his style if somebody didn't see him play? Because he doesn't play like the typical, very good, great NBA player.
Tim Legler
I listen. I think the thing that separates him, Dan, is I personally have never seen a guard or really any player in this league. Maybe, maybe Dirk would be a guy that operated that area of the floor, but he wasn't really doing it as much off the dribble as he was just with his length and his shooting. No guard has ever literally dominated that area of the floor. Basically, if you drew a line on the baseline straight up each side of the lane all the way to half court. So like an area the width of the lane extending from the baseline to half court, that's the area of the floor that he wants to operate in. That's where the most traffic is on the floor. And yet that's where he always tries to get back to. Now he obviously can make shots going, you know, to the right wing, left wing, wherever he has to if he gets pushed that way for that mid range shot. But his favorite place on the court is the area that's got the most traffic for a guy his size. For a guard to shoot the ball, the areas he does with that level of efficiency, we've really never seen anything quite like that. He's just an absolute raw scoring machine. And the more you talk to guys around the league that are, that are great defenders, the answer of who's the toughest guy you've had to guard or have to guard currently, his name typically is the first one that's going to roll off people's tongues.
Michael Kassin
Yeah. And you know, you start to get to that Jordan comparisons of scoring. Now, I'm not talking how Mike scored, but the Mike won how many scoring titles like it was a foregone conclusion. And I don't see any reason why SGA shouldn't be able to continue to be that 30 plus point score for quite some time. But I did want to ask you about if you were going to talk to Anthony Edwards, what would you tell him he has to do, improve upon.
Tim Legler
Well, I think one of the things, I think first of all this has nothing to do with him. Let me start with this. They need to address their lead guard position. I love Mike Conley. Mike Conley has been one of my favorite players in the NBA his entire career. Just a huge fan of his. He's a leader, he's tough, he's great in Memphis, but he's at the stage of his career. He's not going to generate any Additional offense for people. And I think some of that needs to be taken off the plate of Anthony Edwards. Let's start with that because that will lead into the point of your question. I think Anthony Edwards needs to understand that there can't be moments of games where he feels his way out, he feels the game. That's not what he needs to do. He needs to come out and have a Jordan like approach, a Kobe like approach. I think he's got the athletic ability, the explosiveness, the all around scoring game to do it. I think because so much of the other responsibility of being a playmaker has been put on his plate, he morphs between the two and that's not who he is at his core. So part of it's on the team. They've got to address that. And if they can find that, then Anthony Edwards could just go be what you need to be, which is a just an absolute tenacious, attacking, relentless scorer. And that doesn't mean, you know, you have to shoot the ball every time down the floor, but it means everything is about putting pressure on the defenses. Look to bring Jordan again in reference of that. I guarded Jordan a number of times in my career and just watching him throughout his career, he's the only guy I ever saw that every single time he caught it, it was go time. Every time he touched the ball, he wanted to go on. You and Anthony Edwards, I think because he doesn't have that taken off of his plate to go create offense, all these guys and I'm not saying you're not going to get assisted organically, that'll come by being aggressive. But I think he sometimes goes to these periods of time where he's like, okay, let me try to get other guys involved or feel my way around the court. That's just not to me who he is and who he needs to be at his best.
Michael Kassin
Talking to Tim Legler of the Mothership, covering the NBA Finals. Also his podcast, All City NBA Podcast. What, what do people learn when they go to that podcast?
Tim Legler
I just think, Dan, I think it's a little bit different than a lot of what's out there. It's not a hot take thing. Adam Orez is my, is my partner and hosts the show. He's, he's based in Denver and he is real heavily tied into the Nuggets, but he covers all sports in Denver. But we're, we're just serious hoop talk and four times a week, an hour, an hour at a time, we're breaking down the games that happened last night, previewing the games from tonight, and it's just real basketball analysis. If you're a hoop junkie, just like talking about the game and what you watched last night, you want to learn more about it a little bit smarter. When you watch the game tonight, that's. That's what that is. It's not hot take trying to get clicks. We're just two guys breaking down the game because we love hoops. So that's. That's your thing. That's the place you want to go. Because I think it's done at about as high a level as it can be done because Adam is so knowledgeable himself.
Michael Kassin
Why is Michael Jordan joining tv, NBC and their coverage of the NBA?
Tim Legler
That's a good question. Who knows? I don't know what they offered him. Has that been. Has that been reported? Maybe that.
Michael Kassin
Let's say they gave him a Tom Brady deal. Let's say they gave him 30 million, 35. Like, what does that matter to Jordan? Like, you know, he's a billionaire a couple of times over.
Tim Legler
I completely agree with you. I was making literally a joke about that, but I don't know. I don't really know why he would want to. It's like. It's not high stress. Let's start with that. You're not asking him to go run a team or coach a team. It's not high stress what. What we do. I mean, you've got to be careful with your words sometimes because you could end your career if you're not careful. That's about the highest stress you have. It's just sitting down and talking about basketball. So I think from that standpoint, maybe he wants to feel a little bit more connected to the game now that he's not, you know, involved with ownership, and it's just a different life for him. Who knows? Maybe he just misses his conn. Connection to the game. And it's a way to stay relevant and. And a way to just impart some knowledge about the way he views things, because we've never really heard from him in this regard. So I'm going to be very interested to hear what he has to say. I have no doubt he's going to be highly critical at all point when he needs to be.
Michael Kassin
How big a month is Tyrese Halliburton had?
Tim Legler
Look, I said the other night that I. I looked it up because I wasn't sure. Do you know what, Dan, off the top of your head, what the perfect QBR rating is for a quarterback?
Michael Kassin
I think it's what, 158.3 Bang.
Tim Legler
Good job. That's excellent. Yes. I didn't know that. I'm a huge NFL favor. I know the exact number. I looked it up. That's what Tyres Halliburton pitched on Tuesday. I mean, that's what he threw on Tuesday. He played the position perfectly. If you really want to find a teaching tape for how to play point guard in the NBA at the highest level, that was Tuesday night. 30 plus points, 15 assists, 0 turnovers, double digit rebounds, 4 steals and constant tempo. Constant tempo. He put a lot on himself. And the previous game they lost, they bogged down in the fourth quarter, allowed the Knicks to win that game and get it to 2:1 and made it a series and he put it on himself and he answered the bell and it started from the very first possession. Compared him to a Formula 1 car or a driver and had his foot taped with the gas pedal down to the floor. He didn't tap the brakes once. And as a result, Indiana played to their identity. So this guy has now had. It's not just a month, man, it's. It's been about three or four months. Very little to scrutinize. And I thought the first half of the season he was a little bit up and down. I actually described him one time, maybe back in November, as his floor being too low to be considered a superstar. Meaning on those nights when he's quiet or passive or doesn't impact the game, you can't have like a six point night. Yeah, you can't have one of those games where you just kind of aren't noticed. Not if you're on that level. And over the last three months or so, plus whatever the playoffs have been to this point, you know, two plus rounds, he has been that every single night. So he's elevated his status because of his consistency with which he is doing it.
Michael Kassin
Do you realize Jason Kidd had a quadruple double and so points, rebounds, assists and turnovers? Yeah, I think he's had the most turnovers in a game in NBA history. I think what, 15?
Tim Legler
It's. Yeah, listen, that's incredible. We. Tyrese Halliburton led the NBA for starting point guards. For guys that played a lot of minutes in assist to turnover ratio, okay, it was over five a game. He's over seven a game in this series. He's got 44 assists, six turnovers against a team that's got guys that are trying to disrupt him. Now I will say this, the one thing the Knicks don't have, and this is if Indiana wins this series. He certainly is going to get something different from okc. They the Knicks don't have the personnel to jam him up in the backcourt. Mikhail Bridges is a really good defender. He's really long.
Michael Kassin
He's great.
Tim Legler
If you give him an isolation wing player to guard him and that's trying to take him off the dribble. When you're talking about a point guard with that kind of lateral, I mean straight ahead speed, that's Mikhail Bridges can't do that. So he's picking him up in half court or be or even further back on his own defensive end. Now Tyres Albert has ahead of steam. They're not jamming him up in the backcourt on the outlet passes to stop his momentum. They can't do it. Anunoby's too big and thick like to move like that. Brunson can't do it. So Josh Hart's probably the most likely guy. If you just said hey man, just go guard this guy in the backcourt, don't let him get the outlet pass and and turn him a few times up the court, he would be the most likely. But he's not even on the level of four different guys that OKC has. So that's been a big problem for the Knicks. Tyres Halliburton is able to get moving down the Runway and now it's too late to contain him and that's why you're seeing what he's doing to them and just completely picking them apart.
Michael Kassin
Good to talk to you Legs. Have fun with the finals. Thanks for joining us.

Listen to Good company on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts. David Spade Stand Up Special Dandelion can be seen right now on Amazon Prime. Also has a podcast with Dana Carvey, it's called Fly on the Wall and learn more about his upcoming tour dates at David Spade, great to see you again. We were just talking about There is a moment, there's a clip that's been viral for a long time where you're sitting with Chris Rock and you're at a Laker game and Rock is talking to Kobe trying to engage. What was he talking to Kobe trying to win? What. What was going on in that scenario?
David Spade
Well, it was, it all happened so fast and well, you know, you can get our agency at these great seats. In the old days they might still be bumped right up to the Laker bench. And it's very odd. I felt bad for the players because you sit right next to them like arm to arm and you've just got random idiots, whoever's got some heat on them, they're sitting next to you that game and they're sweating, they're in the middle of their huddle and I'm like, we, we, maybe we should try a sucker trap, you know, but, and it's, it's, it's a drag because they're there. But Kobe sat there and, and half the game we'd Switch, you know, so we got to sit and. But they were all nice, all those players. But then, you know, in the heat of the moment, I think Kobe. It was just a very odd situation where the camera's panning over from Kobe and Chris, I think, is talking to him.
Michael Kassin
Yeah.
David Spade
And then I was laughing because I could tell it wasn't clicking because Kobe was mamboed out, you know, but okay.
Michael Kassin
So what is Rock saying to Kobe?
David Spade
What he's saying is, we don't know, but I know he's saying a lot and he's just going on. If he's talking to me, I couldn't hear him. It was so loud. And if he's talking to Kobe, Kobe was worried about something else, but it all looks funny. I like it all.
Michael Kassin
Okay, but how do you get those tickets with your agency? Like, first come, first serve?
David Spade
You just have to ask and say, hey, can I come to one of these games? Or sometimes they'll call and say, do you want the tickets tonight? And, you know, it's a little bit of a hassle. They're so good. But at the last second, sometimes they're like, oh, Mark Wahlberg fell out. But sometimes, you know, Rock is in town. And last time I went to New York, I said, I may went to the Knicks, or maybe when he came, we went there. But usually they can shake him up. Shake it out, if that's a term. And it's super fun. When I did a curb your enthusiasm episode. Oh, thanks. A couple people remember we. The joke was that Larry, because NBC has two sets of tickets. They have those down on the floor and they have some in the rafters. And Larry asked for tickets, and they go, sure, sure. And the head of NBC gives them tickets, but they're in the rafters. And he goes, I wanted the other tickets. And then I'm with the guy on the floor from NBC and he's mad because he says Seinfeld was bigger than just shoot me. Why do I get the floor seats? Which is a good argument.
Michael Kassin
But there is a pecking order of tickets that if Mark Wahlberg wants tickets, that you're not getting the tickets.
David Spade
Well, I wouldn't make it that simple. I mean, I think a little bit. But no, I would say I would give them a Wahlberg. Yeah, or I'll sit with Wahlberg. You know what I mean? They sometimes go, there's four. So sometimes the agents usually, you know, and then they'll bring one of their clients or someone they're courting or someone's got a Movie coming. Sometimes they say, you got a movie coming out. Let's put you on the floor here. Let's put you here at the UFC fight. Let's pepper you around, sprinkle you. And then it's just more promotion, I guess. Right.
Michael Kassin
Do you sat next to a Kardashian?
David Spade
No. I saw Kimberly at the 50th SNL, and I never see her. I never see any of the Kardashians, shockingly.
Michael Kassin
How was that event?
David Spade
Well, then, let's look at a clip now. It was. I thought it was a lot of fun because. Because we had everybody there. I thought the rehearsals were more fun. It was three days this time. The 40th was pretty quick, but this was three days of rehearsing with different people and just walking around. And, you know, it's your turf a little bit, because I was honest now. So you can go up to almost anyone and go, hey, how's it going? And they have to give you a few minutes. But everyone's usually pretty, like, because there's no plus ones either. It's just all. It's all raw dogging. Just everyone is there alone in the audience and stuff. But I had a lot of fun. Yeah, for sure.
Michael Kassin
So there's nobody you're nervous about walking up to and saying, hey?
David Spade
Oh, yeah, there was. I mean, you just randomly. I saw Miley Cyrus, who I think is great. I saw Jack Nicholson, who, you know, everyone will give you a few seconds. It's nice. I mean, Bill Murray was sitting next to me in the audience and on the chart. And then I saw him backstage. I said, I think I'm sitting next to you. And he was obviously overjoyed. And then when we got out there, the seat filler, the whole three hours, I'm like, what's happening? He never came out.
Michael Kassin
Wow.
David Spade
He said, they're eating, like, cantaloupe cubes they had cut up in the back.
Michael Kassin
Do you think that. That because you went up to him, that maybe that was the reason why he didn't come out and he had a seat filler spooked him. Maybe.
David Spade
I don't know if I spooked him, Dan, because I am an alumni. I'm cast member number 3847621. And that's what says on my membership card. And no, they. They set it all up. And, like, I'm over here. There's one scene I did in the. In the show where I had to run in the audience and sit down, and we did a rehearsal, and I forgot the audience is Empty rehearsal. I have 30 seconds. So I run out of the sketch and run in the audience, and then there's chain curtains in my seat, and Chevy Chase. They're like, hey, can you guys. And I'm like, no one plans this ahead of time. I have to scoot these legends out so I can squeak in and do my little bits.
Michael Kassin
That's humor.
David Spade
It's fun. It was funny. Yeah.
Michael Kassin
Dandelion, the stand up. Why Dandelion?
David Spade
Look at this banana in my hotel room. I think it's seen better days. This is hot off the presses. This is what they give me, man. I'll make some banana bread. Sorry to interrupt.
Tim Legler
Go.
Michael Kassin
Go ahead.
David Spade
Look at this atlas for his knife. I'm in Omaha. You ever been to Omaha, Dan?
Michael Kassin
Yes, I have.
David Spade
Oh, I thought I'd trick you there.
Michael Kassin
Yeah, no.
David Spade
I got three cities in Ohio next week. Did you know there's three cities in Ohio, Dan?
Michael Kassin
There's Cleveland, Columbus and Cincinnati.
David Spade
Nice try. Newark.
Michael Kassin
Oh. Oh, you're gonna play Newark. Wow.
David Spade
Yeah.
Michael Kassin
I grew up in Ohio, David. David. Yes, I did.
David Spade
I know nothing about you.
Michael Kassin
Yeah, why don't you care?
David Spade
I know this is like a sports morning show or something. This is like Regent. Why don't you stand at your desk like some of those other guys?
Michael Kassin
Because I'm not on a power trip. Because, okay, whenever you go on Letterman, remember how high Letterman's chair was? Because it's a power thing. It's a power thing that, you know, he looks. He's already 6 4, but he. He has to. He's talking down to you. Literally.
David Spade
I never figured that out. And it was on every show, they would turn and Letterman go, and what are you doing, Tiny Tim? But I hurt my neck. I hurt my C5 trying to look at him and tell him my bits.
Michael Kassin
He's David Spade. Actor, comedian. Just move.
David Spade
Hey, are you in Happy Gilmore?
Michael Kassin
Dude, I am in Happy Gilmore. Yes. Too. Yes.
David Spade
Or is it a secret? I don't know.
Michael Kassin
No, no, no. I've talked about it. I'm in it.
David Spade
Exciting. That's gonna be a.
Michael Kassin
Are you. Are you in it?
David Spade
I'm not in it. I wasn't in the first one, but I was excited to hear about it.
Michael Kassin
And I wasn't in the first one either.
David Spade
I was trying to get. Anyway, I was trying to get.
Michael Kassin
Do you drop a hint With Sandler? Like Sandman? What. What kind of role do you got for me? For Happy Gilmore, too?
David Spade
No, that's too thirsty. I just. The way he works on all that stuff is. Talks about something Like a year ahead. He goes, hey, I might do this, might do this. But I didn't even see anything in Happy Gilmore. And I was. I don't know what I was doing, but it almost didn't cross my mind unless people would go, are you in Happy Gilmore? I'm like, I don't think so. I wasn't the other one. I wouldn't even know what I would do. Plus, he's got sort of. I do. I did think it'd be great if he had all these fun golfers in it. And so it would be fun because I golf. But the truth is, people go, you golf? You should be. And I'm like, who cares? Just pretend. I mean, you don't have to be that great. You think? You know what I mean? They just show they could have Lindsay Lohan out there hitting 900 yard drives. It's movie magic.
Michael Kassin
The podcast Fly on the Wall with Dana Carvey.
David Spade
You know Dana, right?
Michael Kassin
Yes, I do.
David Spade
Okay, good.
Michael Kassin
Very, very talented.
David Spade
Yeah, very talented. He's fun. We do a podcast. Like, you know what they told me? My walls are too blank in my podcast. And Dana's are worse. Looks like he's in some gulag prison. But we just do it from home. And you have a lot of tchotchkes. I like it. Maybe too much, but I do like having something.
Michael Kassin
Yeah, I lead the league in Chachkis, but I like it. I like, you know, if. If the story I'm telling isn't that interesting, maybe you find something on the desk and then you go, oh, that's interesting. Yeah, that's what you need.
David Spade
Oh, he's also deputy. Go ahead.
Michael Kassin
Do you guys. So with your fly on the wall, are you dishing about things that happen on Saturday Night Live? Is that that?
David Spade
I mean, that. That's how it started. And we did. We probably did 200 of those. But we do. We're going to all video now. I mean, right now it's audio. One of them's audio. And it's like the newspaper. You got to get a little video going. So we are getting with. We're catching up to 2018, and we're going to be on video. And then. And so it's on YouTube also. But it's fun. You know, we talk to whoever. A lot of comics, mostly comedy people, but sometimes we branch out because we've kind of buzzed through a lot of SNL people. It's definitely fun to do. Dana's funny. We just screw off. He's great.
Michael Kassin
When you pick a location to film A special. Like, what goes into. You pick that city. How much thought goes into that?
David Spade
I would think what cities I do well in what cities are good comedy cities. Denver is where I did. This one is known for being good comedy city. My last was Seattle, and I really liked it, but it was during COVID No, not Seattle. It was in Minneapolis. It was during COVID So we had problems filming because we had to move it from Austin because of masks. And then I didn't realize the reason we moved it was because we had to wear masks for Netflix. So not me. But the crowd was a little muffled because they were. It wasn't ideal for doing comedy. You know what I mean? If they're like. And I was listening back when my opener was on going, are they. This is a tough. I don't want a tough crowd on my own special. And so I went out and I didn't even know because it's so bright, you know, because I'm like Liza Minnelli. Oh, my God. They're like this cabaret, you know, with the bright lights. And then later they're like, yeah, they. They're laughing, but you can't hear them.
Michael Kassin
How do you know when you have a bad crowd?
David Spade
Oh, you know, I had one the other night. I. I don't blame the crowd. I mean, it might. It's me, too, but I was at the Comedy Store practicing for this run, and I kind of want to give him a, you know, big razzle dazzle show. So I go practice stuff because it's very hard to remember an hour. And of course, I mix in new stuff that's in the special and that's not in the special. And so it's very tricky. Like, I got lost in the middle of something last night. I think I was talking about Bill Belichick, and I can't remember even what I'm saying. So the crowd. I could blame them, but sometimes it's really. It's just. I'm missing the connective tissue of jokes and what goes into the. It's. It's. It's harder than it seems, I guess.
Michael Kassin
So you're working on a Bill Belichick girlfriend?
David Spade
Well, I mean, it's an expirational bit that will work for. If it works at all for another week and a half. But, yeah, okay, well, we could watch something in the news, and you go, hey, I saw the interview where his girlfriend is off camera. And I don't even care about the age difference, but I thought, you know, because she wore, like, a big sweatshirt and no pants. I pants. I thought. And I thought that was an interesting look when there was a crew there. And then she, you know, interjected, and she's walking like Winnie the Pooh. It looked like a shirt with no pants, you know, and. But it could have been. I don't know what it was, but I thought, what are you saving the pants for 60 minutes? And then. And then Bill, of course, he's not going to the Met either. He's got, like an old sweatshirt on with a little throw up on it. And he's just like, wow, we're going to Cleveland. And they're asking. They're like, hey, who's this chick? And he's like. Because he's never been asked a non football question in 27 years. And so, like, what's going on here with this geezer? And he's like, huh, we're going to rehearsal. I know that's not. That's a little harsh. I was just saying, like, that's their words. I wouldn't say that.
Michael Kassin
Yeah, but you date young too, so.
David Spade
I don't know if we need to interject that in the middle rhythm.
Michael Kassin
I'm working on it.
David Spade
Well, that's why I said I didn't have a problem with that part. I don't have a problem with any of it. I just have to think of stupid stuff. Talk about. But I will say, since literally everyone's younger than me now, I guess that is the case. I'm not. I look 22. I'm not Dan.
Michael Kassin
If you got rid of the mustache. Yeah, Like, I think you think the mustache makes you look older. Beard.
David Spade
Yeah, everything.
Michael Kassin
Like, if you just clean shaven, you probably. You could probably pass for about 29.
David Spade
You know, when I did the wrong Missy. Oh, thank you. My maid's in here. When I did the wrong Missy, she saw it. I had to shave everything. Sandlers. I had to shave everything. Actually, it's kind of my idea because I go, I'm supposed to be. Now you. You know, no thought goes into this. That's what you think. But I go, oh, I'm from Portland. I'm a businessman. Like, I'm working. I said I would be pale with a. I wouldn't have like a beer, trying to be cool. Swartzen was one. Dude, I got a beard. I'm like, why? I don't want to shave. I go, that's. Why Is that why? So Adam goes, shave your beard anyway. We can't, by the way, this is a side story. First story was I shaved. I look gross. The Second story is. Is swartzing. The night before we're shooting, we're walking around, and me and Adam see Nick, and he goes, I thought, you're gonna shave. You're shooting in the morning. Oh, Nick, go cram your lines. We got seven pages. I got this. He's always angry. He's always like, fake m. Mad at all times. You know what he is? He's grousy. So the next day, he's an hour late and he has his beard. I'm like, nick, he said, what? What did we land on? I go, we all said, you're shaving it for two weeks. Anyway, this is what I deal with, Dan. It's not all fun and games like you with the fireplace. You roll in wherever you feel like it. Action, action, blah, blah, sports.
Michael Kassin
Well, that was. That was quite a payoff for that.
David Spade
I put the do not disturb on, you know, for the whole time I'm here. And then they always want to get in to see what they're dealing with, you know? So she goes, I'll keep. I. What's that? And she goes. She knocks and goes, did you knock? I go, did I knock to you outside? No. And then she goes, well, I gotcha. And then she tries to summarize how bad it's going to be. She goes, you want me to get in there? And I go, I'm good. And she goes, maybe get those towels off the ceiling for you. I go, no.
Tim Legler
Okay.
David Spade
You want me. You want me to help you dispose of that body back there?
Michael Kassin

Dan Patrick welcomes Tim Legler to dissect the current NBA Finals, focusing primarily on the Oklahoma City Thunder's impressive performances and strategic defensive plays.

The discussion shifts to Anthony Edwards, with Legler analyzing his development and potential:
