Last night I thought you were going to say Tennessee again. I was ready to throw shoe. No.

I thought last night just proved again, you said a baseball is popping.

[Steve Covino]

Well, I have to quote Deion Sanders. That's where I got it from. But yes, and it's evident in every way. And we're going to tell you all about it and why. It's the superstars of the game. It's them doing everything right from the home run derby to the swing off last night, which I have a few issues and questions with and we'll talk about it. But a great time, a great game. Congratulations to the National League. And we have lots to get to on today's show. On our show, 2 to 4 on the west, Monday through Friday, 5 to 7 on the east, we do something called Midweek Major. The biggest stories in the world of sports and pop culture. We break them down. Are they mid week or mid major? We're going to get to that. We'll try to give away some prizes. But we got to talk about our experience yesterday and just by the sound of my voice, you could tell we were raging and representing and we were screaming for some home runs because, man, I barely got anything left. It's not because we were partying and boozing and schmoozing. Well, schmoozing definitely, but we haven't really had time to party or anything. This is strictly from just having fun and talking to people at these experiences. Baseball is back in a big way. But don't call it a comeback. It's been here for years.

[Rich Davis]

Yeah, I just went on a little break for a second where I. The sentiment was like, baseball's boring. Like baseball's not boring. But there was a minute where, I mean, there weren't the big stars. Can I give you of the 80s and 90s? And I just feel like, I mean it goes, it happens in every sport. It happened for a minute in the NBA where you go through a decade where it's like we need something.

[Steve Covino]

I think what happens in life, the.

[Rich Davis]

NBA is about to go through that right now, I think.

[Steve Covino]

Yeah, maybe you're right. In life you're excited as a kid about the holidays, Christmas time, Easter time. Then the kids grow up and there seems to be like a span or a cycle of years where it's just not the same and the magic's sort of gone.

[Rich Davis]

Yeah.

[Steve Covino]

And then those kids have kids and then all of a sudden the magic's back. Life goes through cycles, sports goes through cycles. The crop of stars wasn't as exciting as it is right now. These young guys now have brought it back in a big way and we're reaping all the benefits.

[Rich Davis]

Yeah. Christmas Eve is not the. When the youngest person in the family is like your 20 year old cousin.

[Steve Covino]

Yeah.

[Rich Davis]

It's like, hey, we're going Uncle Frank's for Christmas Eve and everyone's just boring.

[Steve Covino]

Frank's drinking eggnog. No one's playing music. You know, he's. Uncle Bart is sleeping on the La Z boy. He's like, what happened to the magic of the holidays?

[Rich Davis]

Then you snap your fingers and 10 years later there's like four or five little cousins or kids running around and the holidays are back. And baseball, that's Ohtani, that's Judge, that's Lindor, that's Polar Bear Pete, that Schwarber schemes and school and you know, go on all day.

[Steve Covino]

There's so many big names and if you don't know, you need to. And before we get into the Swing off, do you want to talk about our experience real quick? Because we're going to talk about the All Star Game, dude. We're going to talk about the Swing Off. But we experienced something yesterday, guys, that blew our minds. Now we have to make it clear. Rich and I have been working together for a long time. So we've done some pretty cool things. We travel a lot, we've gone to super Bowls a bunch of them. And we love it. We don't take it for granted. We love it. But we're big baseball fans, and we were asked to get to the ballpark early to interview Zach Brown. Why Zach Brown? Because he's singing the national anthem. And I have to be honest, I was a little reluctant. I'm not the biggest country guy, Covino.

[Rich Davis]

Much like most people listening, reluctant to do things. Then once you do it, you're like, I'm glad I did it. It's like your buddy that doesn't want to go out for a beer, and you're like, come on, dude, the one drink. And then once you're out, you're like, all right, I'm glad I came out.

[Steve Covino]

Now I will say this, and we'll get to that story, too. Zach Brown's the coolest dude. And Rich is absolutely right. I was super pumped to talk to him. I'm super pumped about his new album and to see him live and everything. But I'm more of a rock guy, and he told me his new album has a lot of rock in it, so I'm even more excited. But we're at the stadium early to catch up with Zach, and we have on field access with our media passes. I'm not sure we completely knew what type of access we had.

[Rich Davis]

I don't know if we completely deserve this type of access.

[Steve Covino]

I'm not sure if we broke rules or not. But the point of the story is if you walk around with authority or just sort of, like, stumble into the places you're not supposed to be, you got to make the most of it.

[Rich Davis]

And Kavino and I, that, again, this is not a. Well, we've done cool things, but we've worked in music and sports radio for a while, so we've interviewed most people that we've looked up to, the big stars. But when I tell you yesterday, the childhood fanboy in both of us came out because we walk on the field. We're sitting in the dugout.

[Steve Covino]

I've never done that.

[Rich Davis]

And I've never done that.

[Steve Covino]

That was number one and shocking because I said that to my girlfriend when I got back. She's like, you've never done that before. Because we've been doing this for so long, I'm like, no, like, honey, I'm.

[Rich Davis]

Not a hot chick. All right? Like, she's like, my girlfriends and I could do that whenever we want. Like, no.

[Steve Covino]

But I guess you would assume because we've been doing radio and broadcasting and TV for so long, I'm like, no, I've never been. Plus, we keep baseball at a distance because we're such big fans and, you know, you want to remain a fan. And we were in the Braves dugout, and we're sitting there taking pictures. They say, you know, act like you've been there before. But I don't really subscribe to that because I never have been there before. And I'm like, rich, you gotta take a picture, man. You gotta take a picture. It's insane. I've never been in a big league dugout before either.

[Rich Davis]

Run. So you're not alone.

[Steve Covino]

Immediately, I'm sitting there taking it in, like, wow. This is their perspective. Look at this. This is awesome.

[Rich Davis]

I had to go on the top step of the dugout and just put my arms on the. On the padding to be like, all right, so this is what, like, we do.

[Steve Covino]

We all did it. You can see a picture on our social media at Covino and Rich because it was the coolest feeling. And when you're sitting there looking out from the dugout, the amount of press. I know we might be stating the obvious, but when you see it's a different story. The amount of press there is ridiculous. Is ridiculous. Which just proves how big these stars are, what they have to deal with on the daily, and how immune they are to the fanfare and the hustle and bustle of the press and the media and everything else. It's insane. It's insanity. But all cool goes out the window when you see your baseball heroes. I don't know what it is about baseball. It might be football to you, but, you know, we've interviewed, I guess, more football stars. I feel like baseball is more, I don't know, more of a different scene where it's a private. They're not as media friendly or something. I don't know what it is. But you're there and you're watching the big dumper take batting practice. You're watching Aaron Judge right there. You go out there and shake their hands.

[Rich Davis]

And just for the record, Aaron Judge in person, monster is even bigger than I thought he'd be.

[Steve Covino]

Yeah, it made me look like a little person.

[Rich Davis]

There's again, if you want, at Covino and Rich, we posted a little montage of our on field fun yesterday. And Aaron Judge is a beast. He makes Cavino. Someone said it looks like you could put Cavino in Aaron Judge's back pocket.

[Steve Covino]

Yeah, well, guess what? You would look the same if you were standing next to him. So it's insane how thrilled we were to be on the field with the biggest stars. Want you to know how exciting it is because we're fans like anybody else. Fans first, but especially with baseball, because as we've described when we talked about the Home Run Derby and our experience this week, it's probably your first love. Not to get all romantic about the beautiful game of baseball.

[Rich Davis]

Keep your pants on.

[Steve Covino]

But as a little kid, you wanted to probably be a baseball player.

[Rich Davis]

I thought it was wild because then after we're watching Aaron Judge, Big dumper.

[Steve Covino]

Checking out his ass, the Glabor of love, we watch all these dudes hitting bombs.

[Rich Davis]

I saw you. I saw you say hi to Jazz Chisholm.

[Steve Covino]

I did say hi to Jazz Chish.

[Rich Davis]

Reluctant because he's like, I don't want to meet the guys I root for. And then if they're jerks, then I'm going to be torn.

[Steve Covino]

I don't think they would be. But if I don't get any sort of reciprocation or I feel even the slightest bit of big time by Judge or Aaron Boone or Joe, Aaron Boone.

[Rich Davis]

Was standing five feet from us. And I go, yo, Kov, go say hi to Aaron Boone. He's the manager of the team you watch every day. And Cavino's like, nah. I'm like, dude, he's not talking to anyone. Just say hi.

[Steve Covino]

It goes back to the old saying, you never want to meet your heroes. And that's why I brought up the point before that, you know, we've sort of been there, done that. It's never not thrilling, but baseball stars are in a different place in my heart. It might be different for other people listening, but when I see those dudes, like you said, the childlike wonderment and excitement comes out and we were all thrilled. And by the way, Spotty, our video producer, he grew up a Yankees guy, but not the biggest baseball fan.

Even he was like, this is amazing.

[Rich Davis]

The access spot, the access we had.

[Steve Covino]

The view, the excitement of being on the field for All Star Day. Incredible to your standing. Like, honestly, I was. I was, you know, backed up against Aaron Boone.

[Rich Davis]

I'll say.

[Steve Covino]

I was like, right up, you know, watching Aaron Judge hit bombs in batting practice, and you're hearing the snap and crack of the bat and you just watching it fly out there.

[Rich Davis]

Was that when you recommended Darren Boone that maybe the Yankees should get cotton jerseys? Yeah, yeah. I was like, that's a good idea.

[Steve Covino]

Cotton jerseys. But really, Fox Sports Radio Nation, Dan Patrick Show. I wish everybody could experience this. And, man, we did not take it for Granted.

[Rich Davis]

Sorry, Danny.

[Steve Covino]

Danny G. I was excited to tell you the story because Danny was doing other stuff while we were doing this. And Danny, it really was like a childhood dream come true. It was awesome. It was like, gotta take all this in. And then somehow, again, walk with authority. I'm not sure our credentials really allowed all this. We went inside the dugout and let's just say we got lost looking for Zach Brown. Oh, man. Where are we?

[Rich Davis]

They said, go through the dugout towards the American League clubhouse and you'll see like the press elevator. And then we just started roaming. And you'll meet Zach Brown's publicist for the interview. We. We may have taken a wrong turn. I think I saw like players.

[Steve Covino]

I think we made a wrong turn at Albuquerque.

[Rich Davis]

I saw players and like, they're like getting worked on, like on stretching tables.

[Steve Covino]

And like, we saw the, the whole like behind the scenes facilities.

We walked into the locker room.

[Steve Covino]

Did you not know that?

[Steve Covino]

Yeah, we saw them getting taped up and everything.

[Rich Davis]

Spot took a couple photos of the bats and they were just there. And I was like, man, yeah, sweet bat bags.

[Steve Covino]

All the bats. We took photos of it. Like, I don't even know if we're supposed to be here, but this is awesome, dude. We were like really in it where they were getting ready and everything. We're like, wow, this is nuts. And no one was telling us to leave. And sorry if it sounds like we're fanboying out, but that's exactly what we were feeling inside. I saw Judge scratch his butt. Yeah, Judges, I'll say this, sitting there chilling.

[Rich Davis]

You know what?

[Steve Covino]

Hey, what's up? I gave him a vato nod. You know, hey, what's up, man?

But Rich, none of this was better than when you guys were there to see the first ever swing off, right?

[Rich Davis]

We're going to get to that. We're going to get to that. But I will say this, I will say to wrap it up, to wrap this portion of the, of the All Star Game up.

[Steve Covino]

It was an experience I'll never forget. That's all I have to say.

[Rich Davis]

If you've ever worked in a world where you're able to get backstage at a concert that always under delivers because you're like, well, yeah, let's get backstage. You're like, Maybe in the 80s, it.

[Steve Covino]

Was a different story.

[Rich Davis]

Maybe when like 80s Rocky, it was like, you know, girls and drugs and craziness. But now if you go backstage at a concert, just a bunch of roadies with ponytails and Old smelly dudes setting up equipment. No offense. So backstage at a concert, no offense.

[Steve Covino]

You looked at me. Old smelly dudes, no offense to you.

[Rich Davis]

I just don't think backstage is all that awesome. But I will say in the clubhouse, in the tunnels of a stadium, of a game, there is a sense that if you're a sports fan, you feel like that excitement, like, oh, wow, this.

[Steve Covino]

Is where it happens.

[Rich Davis]

We know it is. It's that feeling of, we were all kids that dreamt one day, like, man, I wonder what it would be like to be a big leaguer.

[Steve Covino]

And.

[Rich Davis]

And you for just a split second, like, oh, this is their life. Like, there's their lockers.

[Steve Covino]

I saw.

[Rich Davis]

I don't want to call players, but I saw a couple players greeting their wives and talking to their kids like, hey, what's up, buddy? Dad's got to go play baseball. I'm seeing moments I feel like I shouldn't be seeing.

[Steve Covino]

And that's really what we're trying to get across. It was an amazing experience and just excited to share that with you, Dan Patrick Nation, fsr. It was so cool that I have certain rules that I broke yesterday. Like, I don't FaceTime. I don't do it. I don't like it. It's intrusive. I feel weird. I'm looking at myself. My nose looks giant when I'm. When I'm so close to the phone like that. Like, is that what I look like? I'm so fixated on me that I hate it.

[Rich Davis]

That's it. That's you self centered son of a gun.

Yeah, I don't like the angle. I'm like, this is terrible. I'm not calling anybody looking like this. And I hate when people call me because I'm usually just like being lazy or on the ball or right watching the Yankees or whatever. I'm like, I gotta call. I have a family chat. Yo, your boys on the field, guys. We've all experienced some sort of moment like this that was ours yesterday. Yeah. Just wish that you could have been there.

Just a pretty cool special moment we, yeah, we had to share just because it was on our mind.

It was incredible. So I thank Zach Brown for bringing us there in the first place. We finally leave the field and we leave the dugout and we find Zach Brown in his suite. So now we're in Zach Brown's suite and we do an interview that you're going to see on Thursday on our bonus podcast, over promised. And he couldn't have been any cooler. I asked him, have any nerves about singing the national anthem? The dude was cool as could be, couldn't care less.

It goes to our conversation yesterday.

I'm like, aren't you going to prepare? Or like, you're. Are you sure you're ready for this?

[Rich Davis]

You are trying to push your nerves on Zach Brown. I'm like, I know in my mind. I'm like, why do you think a guy that performs in front of stadiums and arenas?

[Steve Covino]

There's like 55,000 people here. Millions are watching. You're good, buddy. Sure.

[Rich Davis]

Did we talk about this on or off the air yesterday? Was this on or off the air yesterday where you were trying to convince me that Cody wrote had to be nervous at the Home Run Derby when he came out with the belt and did a little speech.

[Steve Covino]

It might have been on our Patreon podcast, but I was saying that he had to be prepared. People don't just wing it and show up willy nilly like you do. You know, some people prepare, and when you're part of a big event like that, I'm sure he was well prepared for it.

[Rich Davis]

I think you overestimate. Look at the Oscars, the Emmys, the Grammys, any award show. These actors or actresses and celebrities get up there and they're reading a prompter.

[Steve Covino]

For the first time.

[Rich Davis]

It's crazy how some people just don't have nerves. I don't.

[Steve Covino]

I mean, I. Nerves are a good thing, though. It's. It's, again, just being prepared for the moment. If you don't have butterflies, you don't care enough. We've always said that. You hear that all the time when it comes to sports. But it was excitement in the air. And it all led to maybe the most exciting moment in All Star Game history. So that was just the start of it, guys. That was just the start of the day. And it was. It was a beautiful day, but it was rainy, too, for a portion of the day. And people like, oh, man. Apparently here in Atlanta, it rains. Then it's nice. Just like Florida. Yeah.

[Rich Davis]

Well, guess what? We're pretty close.

[Steve Covino]

Yeah. So it makes sense. But I wasn't sure of that. I was like, man, is it going to continue raining like this? Nope. The baseball gods made it happen. Cleared up, and it was a beautiful.

[Rich Davis]

Day, beautiful night, and I Always find the intro of an All Star game the most exciting part. Maybe not this year, but usually I love the player intros. The rival of the hometown gets booed. So you're going to boo the Phillies and the Mets and the Dodgers. Except Freddie, who gets love here still. But it was, it was cool to see the player intros and welcome to Atlantis playing. Like everything about the player intros I thought was cool and you said it yesterday, the return of the jerseys. The return of everyone rocking their regular.

[Steve Covino]

Respect uniform jerseys and uniforms except the one.

[Rich Davis]

Do you know the one change, the one difference?

[Steve Covino]

No, what was it?

[Rich Davis]

Did anyone else notice the one difference? While they all rock their uniforms, there was one little difference. They all rocked All Star hats. But not like just a patch. Like the Mets wore a blue hat with a, with an orange brim. The Yankees judge wore the navy hat with a gray brim. Like it was a special all star hat. But besides that, which is dope.

[Steve Covino]

It's just a merch crab.

[Rich Davis]

I thought it was.

People want it.

I thought it was cool to see all the guys in their home and away real jerseys, which was cool.

Now, before we move on and get into the game, does anyone fault me for not going up to the Yankees? I'm Cavino, I'm a Yankees fan. Rich is a Mets guy. But we're baseball fans, period. I don't think anybody wants to take the chance of being big time by people a younger than them. Because you're at a different place if you're a kid and you're going up to George Brett or Wade Boggs or Don Mattingly.

Hey, hey, Daryl Strawberry, you know, that's a different story.

There's sort of no shame in that, right? As a grown man, boy, you think I want to be big timed by Aaron Judge or Jazz Chisholm? No. So I want to keep that, you know, in a distance. Give him a vato nod of respect like that's my guy. But there's no way I want to go up to them and Aaron Boone say yeah, yeah, get out of my way guy, I'm busy. I would be crushed. So do you understand or do you say I should have went got a.

[Rich Davis]

Photo, not a photo. I think you should have went to just say Hi.

[Iowa Sam]

No, I 100% understand. Because at the last Super Bowl I walked up to C.J. stroud, remember? And I told him, bro, I'm a die hard Raider fan and I really wish we had traded up to draft.

You and great season kid.

[Iowa Sam]

He was with his boys and he just Looked like he was in a really bad mood. He didn't want to talk to anybody. And I kind of stepped back and I watched the next person walk up to him and say something and same thing, he kind of iced them too. And I was like, man, I really like this quarterback.

[Steve Covino]

But now it's like, and here you are, a grown man with a family and been in this business a long time, and you're like, man, I didn't deserve that sort of treatment.

[Iowa Sam]

But Look, I see CJ Stroud on SportsCenter last night doing one of the wish things for a kid who needs a heart transplant. And it was amazing. And he's an amazing guy. So maybe he was just having a bad day. So I guess that's why you can't just judge. Meeting somebody one time I would have.

[Rich Davis]

Chalked it up to, oh, it's just Danny.

[Iowa Sam]

No, but that's what I thought too. But then I saw him ice out the next person that walked up to him.

[Steve Covino]

Right.

[Rich Davis]

You know, it's, it's not an easy life for some of these young athletes. I mean, yeah, they make the money, fame, girls, all that stuff.

[Steve Covino]

But dude, imagine walking around like Aaron Judge, for example, and he really was the most prominent guy there at that moment. I'm not just saying that because I'm a Yankees fan. He was. And Cal Raleigh. Cause he was walking around.

[Rich Davis]

It's also hard to miss him because he's such a, he's such a beast. He's a he. You can't miss Aaron Judge.

[Steve Covino]

Everybody he walks by is trying to snap a photo or jump in a selfie with him. And we're talking people in the media, you know, so imagine what the fans do when they see this guy. So you're right. And it makes sense because it was a story about a month ago how Aaron Judge doesn't leave his hotel room on away games because it's just too much. So it makes sense. And that was our experience yesterday.

[Rich Davis]

It's an interesting thought though. Like, when you're a grown man, when you're a kid, it's one thing. Yeah, you could. When you're a little boy and you're like, you know, Carmelo Anthony or whatever, you know, athlete Joe Montana, you could, you know, if you get dissed, it's like, oh man, he must have been busy, I'm a kid or something. When you're a grown up and you get iced out by another grown up, especially like you said, someone younger than you, if you're a 40 something year old grown man, and you get dissed. You got dissed by some kid that's half your age. You feel like an ass clown.

[Steve Covino]

And I don't want to take that chance.

[Rich Davis]

But I will say this. We went out there for National American League batting practice. We were not there for the National League. Had I seen Polar Bear Pete or Francisco Lindor, I think I would have went up and be like, hey, man, just big fan. Yeah, I would have said something because.

[Steve Covino]

I gave judges shooter McGavin. Is that. Is that not good enough?

[Rich Davis]

Well, if you watch our video, when judges take a point, when judges take a bp, he turns around and gives Kavino a little hat. He did a little wave.

Yeah, I was filming him during batting practice. Again, you could see this footage at Covino and Rich. Check our Instagram. We posted it yesterday.

But to answer the question, much like relationships, if you have a buddy going through a divorce or a bad breakup, sometimes you'll hear him say things like, yeah, I'm never gonna trust a woman again. They're all the same. And you see guys and women get jaded, like, all guys are dirtbags. And you gotta say, you can't judge everyone on a couple crappy people you met, because again, I would have probably tried to approach Lindor yesterday just to say hi. And I have the story of the ultimate diss. A couple years back, I'm a big Niners fan. At the super bowl, you guys all saw. This is when people cared about him. Colin Kaepernick, before all the drama, I saw him in a VIP section where we were hanging at an ESPN party. No one was around them. He wasn't busy. He was just, like, looking at his phone. I took the perfect, well timed moment to be like, yo, Cap, I'm a big fan. Love what you're doing, man. That's it, right? And I go, quick selfie, and he's like, no. And walked away. And I felt like, wow. I thought I timed that. I thought I played it right. I feel like an ass clown. But you know what?

Nah, playa, you didn't time that right.

Nah, playa.

I wasn't willing to take that chance. But, man, what an experience. And then we ended up in some little, like, area where there was just all these quote unquote important people eating all these delicious meals. And it was catered like, what is going on? I love all the time. Why are we not invited?

Nothing is better than finding your place, finding your way into an area you know you're not supposed to be in, but no one stops you.

[Steve Covino]

Some sort of baseball park lounge going on. Everybody's eating, like, man, this is the good life. I can get used to this. This is awesome. And again, Rich and I have been doing this a long time, but that's how great the experience was. And the red carpet was truly out for the all Stars yesterday. And that was just your vantage point.

Then for the swing off. Oh, my goodness. I can't wait to hear.

And there's always going to be people that bitch and complain. Like, like you said you had buddies. I'm like, it's gimmicky. I had a friend that. His first statement on our group chat was like, this is stupid. I'm like, you're stupid.

I really found this to be exciting, but I didn't like the fact that because Dave Roberts mismanaged, we're in this situation. That's how I felt about it. But they put these rules in place for a reason. I get it. And it was the first time we've ever seen a swing off.

[Rich Davis]

Hold on now, Dave did. Did he mismanage? Because if there's a rule for a swing off, then he mismanaged nothing.

[Steve Covino]

Burned through all his pitchers.

[Rich Davis]

But if the MLB's put rules in place for swing off, he, Mitch Ma. He mismanaged nothing.

[Steve Covino]

I'm not a fan of that. But they have to figure out who wins this game. You got all these fans there waiting and.

[Rich Davis]

You keep saying he mismanaged nothing. Because if there was, I personally think.

[Steve Covino]

He did because he kept his arms fresh. Right? To get to that point to give.

[Rich Davis]

Aaron fan to give every player.

[Steve Covino]

Aaron Boone kept people on reserve in case they needed. He was still ready to go.

[Rich Davis]

But there's no in case because it goes to a swing off.

If this effect, if this still affected the World Series, then I would say mismanaged.

But I do like the end result because the swing off was exciting. And then our first question as fans is like, well, why did they choose these battles?

[Rich Davis]

There's no mismanaging because if it goes.

I feel he did.

[Rich Davis]

If it goes to his burnt through.

[Steve Covino]

His pictures and it went extra innings, it was have went extra innings.

[Rich Davis]

If it goes to a tie game and they burn through the pitchers, there's a swing off.

Hey, dude, as a fan, I don't like it. I'm telling you, I'm allowed to feel that way. I'm not the only guy. Because Rich says so doesn't make it true. I'm just telling you I don't like how he managed it because that's not fair to Aaron Boone. Then you know what? Aaron Boone should have just put fresh arms in the games. Oh, Aaron Boone, good comeback. He should have had fresh games too.

[Rich Davis]

But you're making no sense.

[Steve Covino]

If he was going to burn through his pitchers, Aaron Boone should have burned through his pitchers.

[Rich Davis]

But if there's no penalty for burning.

[Steve Covino]

Through your pitchers because they so assumed that they were going to win this game. That Dave Roberts, willy nilly. There you go. That's probably why you enjoy it because that's how you roll in life now. Just started throwing people into the game instead of trying to really manage the game. Like, hey, get it.

[Rich Davis]

What do the fans want to see? Everyone get a chance, right? Because look, it turned out great.

[Steve Covino]

But I didn't find that to be fair for the AL and Aaron, boom. I just did it. I'm not saying he broke rules. I'm saying in reality, I feel he mismanaged it. But so ridiculous it led to a swing off. Think what you want and shove it up. Yay.

[Rich Davis]

But you're missing the point. Mismanaging would mean there's a penalty.

[Steve Covino]

I'm not trying to make it clear for you. I think people understand.

[Rich Davis]

They think you're an idiot.

[Steve Covino]

Okay, you know what? Let's take the phone call. Who's the idiot? The bonehead who thinks he's always right and he's wrong, but he often thinks he's right. You can't 7799 on Fox or really, why did he burn through the pitchers you know why? Because they thought they had the game in the bag, and that's why.

[Rich Davis]

And also they did it. And also because there's no penalty if they did.

[Steve Covino]

I get that. But we've never gotten to this point. Well, I bet you Aaron Boone. I bet you Aaron Boone would have put more pitchers in if he was in the business of sort of mismanaging. So because of that, it's forced into a swing off. Am I mad at that? No, because it was awesome. I don't like the end result, but it was awesome. And as a fan, you're like, wait a second. Swing off. Why is Kyle Stowers and Aranda in this?

You know what?

[Steve Covino]

And Randy Rosarena. Because it was pre selected, But I didn't know that at the time. I found out later on. Oh, so they pre selected it. Probably never thinking it was gonna matter anyway.

[Iowa Sam]

Yeah.

[Steve Covino]

So it's kind of like when you're on a plane. Here's my understanding. When you're on a plane and you're in the exit row and you're like, hey, man, in case of emergency, you're in the exit row. Are you good with. And you're like, yeah.

[Rich Davis]

Yeah.

[Steve Covino]

What?

[Iowa Sam]

Yeah, I raised my hand, going through the motion.

[Steve Covino]

Yeah.

[Rich Davis]

You take out one airpod and you're like, yes.

[Steve Covino]

Yes. I'm in the exit row. Yes. Yeah. They, prior to the game, say, hey, if this goes extra innings into a swing off, are you willing to do a derby action? Hey, Schwarber, you want to do this? Yeah. Yeah, whatever. Because you're assuming it's never gonna happen.

[Rich Davis]

Sounds like Aaron Boone mismanaged that part.

[Steve Covino]

Not really. But there's a lot of people wondering, well, why wasn't Judge in it? Why wasn't Ohtani in it? And, you know, Danny G. Had the best suggestion of all. And social media was also buzzing about the fact, why not just have the people that participated in the Home Run Derby be the guys on standby here in case this happens? Because it intertwines the derby.

[Iowa Sam]

Ties it all.

[Steve Covino]

The actual game. Yeah. It wraps it up perfectly. It's like, well, these are the derby guys. Well, these are the guys that are going to be participating in case a swing off happens. But no, you got Brent Rooker and Stowers, and it wasn't even supposed to be Stowers from Miami. It was supposed to be Eugenio Suarez, but he got hurt.

[Iowa Sam]

At least Rooker was in the derby. And then he went on to hit two homers out of the three chances.

[Steve Covino]

Rosa, Rayna and Schwarber and Aranda and Pete Alonzo, I guess, was the anchor.

[Rich Davis]

I just can't imagine. I can't imagine why Aaron Judge wouldn't be one of Boone's three guys unless he was scared to do it. Or Boone mismanaged and said, it doesn't matter, I won't need him. But there's a big rumor going around that so many of these starters, once they got pulled, some of them left the ballpark, some went and hung in the clubhouse. Some went to hang with their families, which I really don't care about. It's the All Star Game. It's an exhibition.

[Iowa Sam]

But for people speculating, they showed school. He looked like he was ready to go out clubbing.

[Rich Davis]

So when you, you know, when you're in the All Star Game and there are no stakes, really, other than just your entertain the fans and it's a fun night of celebrating your sport. Like, there's rumors, pride on the line.

[Steve Covino]

No one wants to embarrass themselves. It's the All Star Game. A lot of people are watching.

[Rich Davis]

But I. But I think they're still ultimate competitors. But Ohtani, there's big rumors that he wasn't even in the stadium. You have a problem with that or not really?

[Steve Covino]

I do, yeah, kind of. But I also get. It's probably standard for something like that. And you also have to keep in mind, what did we learn from being on the field and watching all the fanfare and the media? It's like, you know, a guy like Ohtani probably just has to get out early or else he's there until 3am.

[Iowa Sam]

They were tired, just like you guys, from a long week in Atlanta and wanted to get back to the hotel.

[Rich Davis]

Don't blame me if I left early. Ohtani left early.

[Steve Covino]

In our defense, we're not in the game, dude.

[Rich Davis]

My bro. I don't know if you know my bro, Shohei hit me up. He's like, I'm leaving. Are you? I'm like, yeah, me too.

Ot. Hey, you know what? I hear a lot of people on social media right now speculating, dogging us for leaving early. Guys, we were super pumped to be there. No one was more excited than us. We were exhausted. And if you really want to know, we didn't have seats. You know, got all the major sports trying to figure out how to, you know, do the all Star games, NBA, Pro bowl and Major League Baseball. Got it right. I mean, swing off, it felt like showmansh. It was like the show and the biggest, like box office type of show that you could want. You got Kyle Schwaber winning it on a swing off. And I like, I don't like being in the Home Run Derby, guys, because you don't get Schwarber, you don't get Alonzo to close it out. I mean, two of the biggest home run hitters in the league going, you know, you know, backing up each other in a swing off. And I just, I can't imagine. And I know it will never happen, but I'm crazy to say it in the World series. Setting Ohtani vs Judge in a swing off for a World Series, that would be ridiculous.

It was, it was exciting. The theatrics were incredible.

I'm so glad Kev brought that up because on the shuttle ride back when the game was over, all of the people were buzzing about they, they should end regular season extra inning games like this. Forget that automatic runner on second. I heard several people saying that out loud and maybe they were just caught in them up in the moment, but I heard that from several fans that were there.

Well, the game is based nowadays a lot on the home run. It's exciting. Yeah, it's like a, it's like an NBA slam dunk or do a far three pointer or let's be honest, like a deep pass in the NFL, a pick six. Like it's the excitement of the home run. And I will say I feel a little bad for Polar Bear Pete Alonzo, because I agree with you. There he was, he was going to be your mvp and then he was.

One for two with three rbi. Big bomb, you know, he was definitely your MVP of the game. And he was the anchor of the swing off. He never got A shot.

Let's just say it was tied. Trade, Right. Let's say the dude on who was the last guy wasn't even like a big star. I mean, he was an All Star, but who was the guy that hit zero. Aranda.

That's what I'm saying. I had a bunch of thoughts and a bunch of feelings because three players from each team, three swings from each player, teams alternate team with the most home run wins the All Star Game, right? And I'm like, man, this is wild. The whole thing was so cool to see.

Hey, what's going on, fellas? Hey, I just wanted to talk about number one. So this last night, it felt like a shootout in a hockey game or a soccer game. So it's sweet, man. You know, that's one of the coolest things in sports. You know, if you're in a World cup final or something and they go to a shootout, man, you're. Everybody's on the edge of their seat. So that's kind of how I felt watching this last night. And number two, I want to. Just want to talk about Aaron Boone. I guess I didn't realize that they predetermined the lineup, but, man, how do you not let Judge and Cal Riley swing off if they're still there, man? Like, that's.

These are the thoughts we all had watching it. So I'm trying to express what I was thinking at the time.

Cal, Raleigh and Judge, they were having.

A stake down the block to pretend that everybody knew these rules. Everyone's full of baloney, like Rich, because nobody knew that they had these. These things predetermined. Unless you're Tim Kirchen or Jeff Passon, because I didn't know that and I'm a baseball fan.

Since it was predetermined in. The managers have been around these games before. Maybe they know Judge isn't still going to be around. Ohtani is going to be in his limo by then. And that's one of the factors in why they picked who they picked.

That's another point, Danny G. But here's where I actually agree with Rich. Again, first instinct. We're watching from the bar. What Kyle Schwerber did, three pitches, three home runs in that high pressure moment. He even admitted it was a high pressure moment was amazing. And how he went down and scooped up that last home run on a knee like you mentioned, Danny G. That was insane. Yeah. But for him to win the MVP for that, I really do have a problem with that. I don't think he was the MVP because he had no hits in the game. This is like a separate portion of the game, in my opinion. This is just my opinion. Relax. So not you, Danny G. I'm saying everybody who's like, yeah, dude. And then he gets MVP for hitting three meatballs. Pete Alonzo hit a three run blast in the game. Legitimate pitcher off a legitimate pitcher. So, yeah, Kyle Schwaber is a hero and it was incredible. I don't want to take anything away because he made it look easy. Dude, it was highly impressive. I get it. But he's the MVP for that. He had three meatballs for home runs. Yeah, it was a big moment. But Pete alonzo Still the MVP in my opinion.

Please don't misunderstand what I'm saying, but I still think that alongside of got the mvp. Yeah. That's how I. That's just how I felt because I'm like, that was just, just how you decided to win her. That wasn't really part of the game, was it? Or I guess we just have to look at it differently. Look, it's the first time we ever experienced it. These are the things I was thinking. I did feel for Pete Alonzo, even though, you know, he's had his moments, he's good. This is what, fifth All Star Game? And it's wild to see guys like him. Are the veterans rich nowadays?

Yeah. He was saying that when he was miked up, how it's a great mix of young players and veterans. I just wanted to point out one thing because there are going to be people that say Aaron Boone had rally and judge and there's sluggers. Ohtani, that didn't do it. Leaving a game early. I'm not going to get down on them. It's an All Star game. Then again, there are fans there watching in person and on tv. But I think it's one of those scenarios that we've all been through in life where you don't really think something's going to happen, so you don't prepare for it. Like, I'll give you. I'll give you one. And I hate to say it because we're all flying today, but you know when they're like, there might be turbulence and someone doesn't put their seatbelt on and then. And then they might spill their drink or bump their head or something, or you leave house.

How do you use that example?

And then you bump into your high school sweetheart or so, you know, like, what's the chance? You always do the what's the chances? And I think Ohtani's probably in his limo. Like, what's the chances? Oh, I would. Oh, dude.

Don't you think because of how this all played out, that might change moving forward? Yeah, I mean, the bigger stars may think twice about doing what they used to do.

Yeah, absolutely. And I. And I think that now this may be a stretch, too, but things like the Savannah Bananas, where they lean into the entertainment side of things and they do goofy things and they're willing to try other things, you know, sort of. Even though this was a decided thing a while ago, I feel like baseball's feeding off of those fun, theatrical antics. And it works. Sometimes some of the changes they've made are working. And that was one they made a few years back that actually works.

Oh, yeah. We didn't even talk about abs and how they used that last night in a strike. A ball call was overturned for a strikeout.

[Rich Davis]

How cool. And the reaction of Edwin Diaz when he's like, no, no, no. I think that caught the corner. And they're like, yeah, it did. Strike three. Very cool.

[Steve Covino]

Yeah, very cool to see.

And by the way, do you mind? And if that were incorporated in the regular season, if each team got. What would be the limit, you think? The balls and strike challenge, because you can't have too many because then it sort of slows the game, but probably.

Needs to be like three because it.

Cause they're real quick. It's like tap on the helmet and you find out within five seconds. So I think three a game is not crazy, right?

Who's opposed to it? Innovate or die, right? You gotta, you gotta evolve.

Maybe the people that volunteered, but I do think Pete Alonso got hosed of that.

Maybe the people that volunteered also on the flip, you know, saying guys like Ohtani and Judge like, yeah, what's the chances I won't do it? The guys are like, yeah, yeah, sure, I'll do it. Maybe those are the people, like you said. Maybe it's like at your workplace, it's like, who wants to be the fire marshal of this floor of the building? And then all of a sudden, someone lights something on fire in the kitchen. You're like, oh, man, Dwight, I'm the guy that signed up.

Like, so that's how it felt. Yeah, that's how it felt exactly.

Schwarz on his knee for that third home run was theater the same way the night before Cal Raleigh was theater. Remember when his dad turned around and it was just. It was all of it. Man, what a week for baseball.

And by the way, we're allowed to gush. We're gushing. I know we sound like fanboys to the max when baseball had a great week, but baseball had a great week. And how many people are quick to dump on baseball? How many times do we say, hmm, as hosts of a show, yeah, let's lead with football. Cause people get bored with baseball talk.

We keep. We keep it real. And I wasn't doing the field stuff with you guys earlier, but I stayed, you know, in the seats. And there were MLB executives in that row and they were really happy with how it turned Out. But what did we. You guys said it yesterday. You thought the Home Run Derby was going to be the highlight and you said it on the air. So you're not fanboying too much because you were honest on yesterday morning show saying that, oh, Home Run Derby's the highlight. The game's probably going to be boring. You said that.

I did.

And I think a lot of people assume that. And then look what happened. They do the All Star Game better than any other sport. That's just a fact.

Danny G. To wrap it up. You know, again, we left. We're the worst. But so did Aaron Judge and Ohtani. Get off us.

And I said there were a lot of fans I saw leaving when it was six to three.

What was it like? Two things. When the swing off was announced and when it was going on. And that Hank Aaron tribute. Gotta tell us about that.

Oh, that was beautiful.

But yeah, what was it like when the swing off happened? Did everybody just go nuts?

At first it was a lot of confusion and I saw a lot of people bust out their cell phones trying to get the TV feed.

So they could have. And turn the audio up. Turn the volume up. Yeah. And then once we figured out what was going on, it. Dude, everybody was just so excited. And when Schwarber thought that his third one was gonna go foul, I thought because the way he was leaning and on his knee like that, I thought that ball was going foul. It wasn't really even that close when.

They brought out the net and when they brought out the net too, like, I'm like, what the heck? Yeah. And then I thought too, that's a. That's a decent amount of pressure too, for the pitching coaches. No. Because they have to not deliver in an All Star game.

They didn't plan.

But they didn't plan on that. Dude, we.

We didn't know who was going to be pitching either. That's the other thing, right?

Yeah. So I mean, this is a questionable choice by Rob Parker. You know, reduced price, old chicken salad. Now you would say, well, they're not gonna sell it if it's old. Listen, I am a man that tries to find a bargain who isn't right. What man or woman isn't trying to find a good deal. If I have people over my house or cook out a barbecue, my wife's grilling up some stuff on her green egg and I'm doing burgers and dogs. I will say if I see reduced meat and I see them doing it while I'm There. I'm like, yeah, sell this. If it says like, sell by tomorrow. I'm like, I'm gonna cook it in an apple. Yeah, I'll, I'll take some skirt steak or cheeseburgers that reduce price. Cause I'm cooking it now. I saw bacon, which is cured meat and it was like, yeah, they must have had too much of a shipment. I saw bacon for half price. I'm like, I'm gonna make this tomorrow for breakfast. No one's above that. You ever go to the bakery section and you see they just mark down all like the muffins or cakes. I know you love markdown cakes.

But he's a guy that travels a lot on his own dime, so he's gotta like budget. Everyone budgets and prioritizes differently, right? So maybe he cuts out on these weak ass, cheap ass meals, but he splurges at Magic City.

It's like, you know, everyone chooses where they spend. Like I always find it funny, like Cavino or his sneaker will spend, you know, a stupid amount of money on like, like some watch or sneakers. But Kavino's the guy that won't download a $2 app on his phone because they go, I gotta pay for it.

Camino won't resubscribe to Apple TV because it's like five bucks. Yet Camino be like, yo, look at these sweet new Jordans I bid on.

Right? But again, prioritizing differently. So maybe Rob Parker cuts corners on things like this so that he could afford those new Travis Scott Nikes, right? So that he can get an extra lap dance so that he can maybe splurge for a drink on his sweet flight from Atlanta to Los Angeles or whatever, right? Rob Parker. So what do you think? Cheapskate, Cheapo or being smart?

I get a bargain outfit and I don't even care if I don't take it back home or not.

So let me ask you this. What is it that you. Let's talk to our Dan Patrick friends. We appreciate you hanging with Covino and Rich. It could be sports related, it could be travel related, family related. What, what is your weird thing? Like, what are you willing to spend on? But then on the flip of it, you're like, no, no, no, I will not spend for that at all. And because we all have those things that you're willing to spend.

You can see it at Rob Parker, MLB bro on social media. He's got a reduced price gouda sandwich. What are these? Gouda sliders for $2.70 to reduce prices because they're old.

Kid and a reduced price chicken salad, croissant for 270. So instead of paying 16 bucks at the airport, he says, look, five bucks for the ride home. That's how you do it. I'm not cheap. I'm smart. You know what? They're not going to sell it.

Are they? If it's bad, I mean, they probably just got to get rid of it. I mean, like, listen, like I said, there have been times where I have people over quite a bit for barbecues. If I go to the supermarket and I see clearly, sometimes supermarket markets over order.

You've seen this, right? Sometimes they don't have something. Other times they're like, why would hot dogs be $3 instead of 6? Because they must have a lot of inventory. Okay. But take advantage of that.

Say he's got a long Uber ride from his Atlanta hotel to the airport.

Chicken sandwich.

And then the airport's hot inside at the terminal.

So maybe they sell it and it's not bad yet, but by the time he arrives to his gate, it might be bad.

Yeah, that sandwich is sitting around in his bag that whole time. That's also kind of odd. I agree with that. Maybe younger generations could take a page out of the Rob Parker book. Because you sometimes need to be a baller on a budget to be able to do the things you want to do and not feel guilty about it.

All right, I'll give you one. And we all have them. What are you willing to spend money on and what are you a cheapskate on? I'll give you this. I'm more than willing to spend. To overspend and buy Starbucks or cocktails at a bar without even thinking about it. You go to Vegas, you go to an event, $20 old fashions or vodka sodas or 15 bucks, you go to Starbucks. Six, seven dollars for a coffee. I don't even think about it twice. But if I'm looking to buy just like a basic T shirt, I'm going to Target and get, like a good fellow 8 to $10t shirt. If I see a designer, what I'm.

Wearing now, yeah, it's Banana Republic, Costco. I got it at Costco. Why would you overspend T shirt?

But it's. But I like plain T shirts back. He dresses well, but I can never. Sometimes you go to a department store and you're like, to designer t shirt for 80 bucks. I'm like, I could never do that.

That's because you could dress up a generic T shirt with the rest of your wardrobe.

That is where I cut the biggest corner. You know, you try to look good. You want good, Right? But who wants to overspend on a regular designer plain T shirt? You can get that and you can get that at Old Navy.

I'll give you one. I think it's a lot of times you're disgusted on it not being something you're excited about. It's just more functional. Like to me, I'm taking my kids to their first Mets game at Citi Field on Friday. I went all out and we were like sitting right behind the Mets dugout. Ticket price doesn't bother me. You know what does that though? Parking at the stadium and rental car. That drives me bonkers. The fact that hundreds of dollars to rent a car and park will eat at me but the few hundred dollars a ticket, I'm like, yeah, I get it. It's, you know, I, we're, we're all different in these ways. But it was just funny. We, we, we'd bring it up real quick.
