Draft night tonight, day one of a two day affair. Jay Billis from the Mothership will join us. Coming up, you have the Nets with five first round picks. They got a total of six picks. They have a second round pick as well. Dallas, San Antonio, Philly and Charlotte will lead off the festivities. Celtics ship Christoph Sporzingis to the Hawks and the Mav. They locked up Kyrie Irving for an extension. And the Pelicans and the Wizards had a trade with CJ McCollum. And who was the Jordan Pool. I was going to say the guy who got punched.
Dan Patrick
Oh no, that, that.
LeBron James
Is that the lead for them?
Jay Bilas
That's kind of how he's known probably, you know, the guy who got punched, you know, by Draymond Green, his teammate Jordan Pool. Yes, that guy. So I think there's going to be, you know, more trade action. I don't know if it'll be a flurry, but I do think that things are changing in the NBA and we'll get to what the Denver Nuggets were accidentally or maybe not accidentally hinting at yesterday during a press conference. That'll be coming up. 877-3-DP show email address dpdanpatrick.com Twitter handle @DP show operator Tyler sitting by. He'll take your phone calls. We look at the draft sometimes as well. We'll find our star in the draft and there are some stars, they're just not ready made. Keep in mind, Cooper Flag is around the same age as LeBron was when LeBron came into the NBA. I think there's maybe eight or 10 days difference between their ages. And Cooper Flag kind of circumvented the hey, you gotta go to college for a year. So he reclassified. He should be graduating from high school. He should have just graduated maybe last week. But he reclassified, played on a really good team at Mont Verde in Florida and went to Duke. So now he's coming out as an 18 year old, same age as LeBron. Basically here is LeBron James talking about Cooper Flagg.
LeBron James
I personally think that he wants to be great.
Ryan Seacrest
You know, he had a hell of.
Jay Bilas
A year at Duke. Guy that can do so many different.
LeBron James
Things on the floor, can play with the ball, can play without the ball you know, his jump shot is going.
Jay Bilas
To continue to get better, super athletic, quick second jump.
LeBron James
And also he gets to join a team that's established right with hall of Fame guys.
Jay Bilas
Klay Thompson, Anthony Davis, Kyrie Irving, right off the bat, hall of Fame coach Jason Kidd. You know, these guys are like they're going to, they can give him the whole blueprint and I think that's going to be an incredible thing for him to, to have. LeBron didn't have that when he came out, went to the Cavaliers. That's from the Mind the game podcast that LeBron does with Steve Nash. If Cooper Flag was a quarterback and we were leading up to the draft, we would have already heard the he doesn't do this. Here's the downside, here's some negatives. I haven't heard any negatives of Cooper Flag. Now I'm sure there are, as LeBron said, he can improve his jump shot. But in the NFL draft, what happens with these quarterbacks, they either start out where you don't know much about and then you get a riser and then all of a sudden somebody slips into the first round or in the lottery or this guy can't miss to then leading up to the draft, he can miss. We got big questions about him. Happens every year. But with Cooper Flag, I mean, we don't nitpick with NBA draft picks, we don't nitpick with high draft picks in Major League Baseball, but we do with football, certainly at the quarterbacking position. But Cooper Flag, he is a quarterback or should be treated as a quarterback. And we'll talk to Jay Billis. What are the negatives or downside or things that, I mean, he's only 18. He can't be, you know, the full package right now. Now, that doesn't mean he won't be, but at 18, he's going to be an 18 year old at times out on the NBA floor. But you know, looking at what he's done so far, seems to have done everything right and feels like there's a lot of momentum on him going to the right team. That's key too. As I talked about this many times in different sports, you can be great and go to a bad team and not have a great career. You can be good and go to a great team and have a great career. And this is where you look at just how much is expected of you. Victor Wembanyama went to the Spurs. Now, I think he's going to be the best player in the sport within the next couple of years. But he wasn't asked to do much. He's playing in San Antonio. We've seen players play there. There's not a, you know, the media scrutiny. He was able to kind of develop. Hopefully the blood clot is going to be healed and he'll be fine, and that won't be an issue for him. But you go there. How many wins did San Antonio have last year? How many did they had the previous year? Nobody cared. We allowed him to develop. Cooper Flag's going to go to Dallas. I don't think he'll be the rookie of the Year because he's going to go to Dallas and he'll have Kyrie eventually. You have ad, you have Klay Thompson. They got some front, front court guys like he's going to be asked to do. Basically, it'll change from night to night, probably. Hey, you might be scoring a little bit more. Hey, it might be rebounding a little bit more. Maybe it's passing a little bit more. I don't think that he'll be locked into, you better get your 20 shots. You better get, you know, you got to get 20 points. I don't think that he'll be asked to do that. I think if he does, that'll be a luxury. But I think Jason Kidd, easing him in and letting him find out exactly what this team needs and when, what he can add to that team. But you've already got guys who've won championships. You got, you know, an experienced head coach. As LeBron said, you got a future hall of Fame coach and Jason Kidd. And now you're asking Cooper Flag to just be one of the guys. If he went to Washington, if he went to Brooklyn, he doesn't. He's not allowed to be just one of the guys. Now. He's going to be. When you watch them play, you're going to kind of have to find him. If he played with Brooklyn or Washington or some of these other bad Charlotte, you're going to be like, oh, man. Because defenses can't load up on him in Dallas, in Brooklyn, in Washington or Charlotte, they will. So he can stand out for a variety of reasons. But I think going to the right team at the right time and understand this, he's 18. And I said, he's probably going to make a billion dollars on the court in the NBA when it's all said and done. Let's just say he's an All Star many times over. Let's say he's an all star six times, seven times, 18 years of age. That next contract 22. Next contract. 27, 26. Next contract. 30. 31. And these are contracts where you're going to make 250, $300 million at least. The new TV deal is 11 years. He is going to be 29 years of age when this new TV deal is done. Over the course of those 11 years, what's he going to make? He'll make a half a billion dollars. And that's just on the court. Somebody's got to get paid. Like, we go crazy when we go, can you believe that guy makes 50 million? Well, there's an amount of money and you got to pay it to somebody because you only have a certain number of players on the roster. And that's where you're going to get a somebody who's going to get to $80 million here. And it's probably Shea, Gilgis or Luca at some point. They're going to make $80 million. I mean, we're not far off from $100 million a year. But Cooper Flag is ready to go number one to the Dallas Mavericks. Yes, Pauline.
Ryan Seacrest
They project a few different business websites.
LeBron James

Ryan Seacrest
In 2028, the Supermax salary will be $72 million a year and should go.
LeBron James
Up 6 million a year every year after that, at least.
Jay Bilas
But we do lock in and we go, okay, maybe a Luca or Victor Wembanyama or Cooper Flag. But there are times when you get guys who are undrafted. You know, Fred Van Vliet, he was one of the cornerstones of the Raptors when they won a title. Ben Wallace, undrafted, heart of the Pistons.04 championship run, hall of Famer. You know, you get these guys where they kind of slip through the cracks, but those guys are so instrumental. And it leads me to what's going on in Denver, because yesterday the Nuggets held a press conference. Josh Kroenke, his dad, Stan Kroenke, owns them. He owns a few other franchises. So you're doing sort of, I guess, exit interview. They're just hiring a couple of front office people. They, of course, they fired Michael Malone at the end of the regular season. They took OKC to seven games. When they lost okc, Joker, and I'm paraphrasing, talked about, we need depth because they had depth when they won a title. And I said this was malpractice going into this last season. I said, you didn't do anything. I don't want Michael Porter Jr. He's not going to help me. I like Aaron Gordon a lot. Jamal Murray gets banged up, you better have some guys on the bench. And I'm listening to Josh Kroenke, one of the owners of the Nuggets, and he has this to say. Now, once again, this is unprovoked. I don't think anybody went to the press conference, is going to ask him about the possibility of maybe. Maybe trading the best player in the game.
LeBron James
I think that for us as an organization, going into that second apron is not necessarily something that we're scared of. I think that there are rules around it that we needed to be very careful of with our injury history. The wrong person gets injured and very quickly, you're into a scenario where that I never want to have to contemplate, and that's trade number 15. You know, we're very conscious of that pushing forward and, you know, providing the resources that we can when the moment arrives. But that second apron, is it a hard cap? I'm not 100% sure, but it's something that teams are obviously very aware of going forward.
Jay Bilas
Okay, he's part of ownership. He doesn't even know about the second apron. First of all, it appears as if he doesn't know what it is. Why would you bring up Joker in any scenario? Could you imagine if the Kansas City Chiefs ownership got in front of the media and said, you know, we're all about transparency? I mean, you know, I get a couple injuries here. We may not have to trade number 15? The sports world would explode today if the Chiefs did that. Is this an accident by Josh Kroenke? I don't know how well versed he is in getting in front of the media. I always love when it's always total transparency. But then if you ask certain questions, there's not going to be total transparency. So don't tell me you're all about transparency here. When's the last time you thought about trading Joker? Has Joker asked to be traded? When's the last time you received a call about joke? Like, if we're doing total transparency, great, I'm all for it. But to me, and. And I've listened to it now, I think four or five times, I'm trying to be fair to the Nuggets with this. But then the more I think about this, I think this was. This was purposeful. It felt like, hey, we'd hate to do this. We don't even want to think about this. But he wants to have depth. He's got to have help us out here. You know, we need a little help, too. It's got to be given to. He even says, hey, we don't even know if he's going to accept our offer. Right there. That told me everything. We're not going to give you the max or we want to give you a four year deal instead of a three year deal. The four year deal gives us more flexibility. So now you put the onus on Joker. Hey, yeah, we signed, you know, that stupid deal with Michael Porter Jr. And we don't know if Jamal Murray is going to be healthy enough to last a couple of years. But hey, you want depth, you gotta help us out a little bit here. I can't imagine another owner doing this. I just can't. That you would say. I mean, the Milwaukee Bucks ownership does. They didn't go, I don't know, probably might have to trade him. It's. They don't want to trade him. He might want to leave Milwaukee. I was just stunned. But it felt like there was more to this. Felt like there was an agenda here. Felt like there was a message that was going to be sent and that is we're going to try, but we're going to need help from Joker here as well. And I started to think about this when, when you're looking at, you know, this second apron that I think we should start actually selling, say second aprons like DP show second aprons on here, you know, maybe with Traeger. So you look at the Celtics and what they're doing, they were 22 million above the second apron. But teams can only spend two years in a five year period of above a certain line. And then future first round picks start dropping to number 30 overall. So that's why the Celtics are having this sale right now. They used one second apron season this year and they're not going to waste another not having Jason Tatum. So they had to get rid of money. This is what's happening with this second apron. You got a five year window. You want to spend over it. Okay. After that it's going to cost you your draft picks. They'll drop down to number 30. I know it's complicated, but you know, I think what they're trying to do is maybe collude to let's keep these salaries under a certain umbrella. Let's not get crazy with all of this. Look at the Celtics. I mean those two contracts with Brown and Tatum, I mean he got a half a billion dollars there. Tatum probably won't play next year. They may look at trade Jalen Brown like all these things that you go, no, they can't do that. Just the fact that the Nuggets would even Hint at that. And none of these reporters go, hey, if things go bad, are you gonna trade Joker? It wasn't one of those. But boy, if. If he came on this show and said, you know, kind of a doomsday situation, we might consider trading 15. Oh, man, here we go. Hold on, I got some questions for you. Yeah, Marvin, if you're another NBA team.
LeBron James
Do you just call just a.
Jay Bilas
Sure, put out a feeler? I mean, look at what the Lakers pulled off with Luca. You never know. You never know. Like Boston, if I'm the Brooklyn Nets. You are a nondescript franchise. You got five first round picks. I would be calling the Celtics and saying, what about. What about if the Celtics are kind of in a rebuild slash reload? Then I would try to. I'd try it. I'd knock on the door at least. And I think some teams have probably called the Celtics amount. Jalen Brown, shams, as mentioned, that teams are kind of, you know, kicking this around. I don't know, some interesting times with the NBA, you know, does Giannis get traded? Maybe not this year. You start to look at the injuries, you know, Durant didn't have a lot of suitors, ends up going to Houston. Phoenix is a mess, you know, so you start to look at all of this 76ers, you know what that's. Talk about a mess, you know, the Pacers, what do you do without Tyrese Halliburton? There's a lot going on here, and I think that's the interesting part leading into the draft. It might not be the draft, but there are a lot of storylines here. And I did not think we'd be talking about the Nuggets and Joker and any remote possibility. That's where you go to a press conference and you go, we would never, ever trade him. Never. Now, that doesn't mean ownership doesn't walk back sometimes, what they say. But that's where you say, hey, we have the best player in the sport. We got to build around him better. We have to do a better job. That felt like it's, hey, we might be screwing up a little bit here, but you have to help us if you want some depth. That's what I read into that until other otherwise you know, noted. That's what I'm going to take away from that. It felt like nobody provoked, prompted you. And you're telling about transparency, which is nice, but that felt like there was a little more attached to it than, oh, a slip of the. Ah, you guys are running with that. Stop, you conspiracy theorist. You all right. Just getting started.
Ryan Seacrest
I like when you're fired up.
Jay Bilas
Well, it's a.
Ryan Seacrest
It's an interesting comment because you don't want to call them unaware and. But if it's on purpose, then it's even scarier.
Jay Bilas
You go into those press conferences, you know what you're going to be talking about. You. You can't be surprised, right? You can't be surprised. I don't think there was any. Any thought with any member of the media going, man, wait till you hear this question. Wait till I ask him about Joker. And all of a sudden I went, wait. And I said to Marvin, give me the context of that. He said, there wasn't. I mean, it was just that he brought it up unprovoked. Like to thank the nuggets, though, for giving me a little content.

I love going to the movies and there's nothing like a summer blockbuster. You know, those big, loud, thrilling popcorn, flying edge of your seat kind of movies. I absolutely love those movies. And F1 the movie, it checks every single one of those boxes. Brad Pitt plays Sonny Hayes, a former Formula one driver who gets one last shot at redemption decades after stepping away from the sport. This is a big movie. It feels big and that's because it is. It's from the same people that brought you Top Gun Mavericks, so you already know it delivers on action and it gives you that firsthand driver's point of view. You know, it takes you right inside the cockpit of the car. It is just an incredibly well shot movie. I took my 15 year old son to see it and his review was, and I quote, yo, that movie was lit. So I'm pretty sure he enjoyed that. Do yourself a favor, go see it on a big screen, the biggest screen that you could find. We went to go see an IMAX and it was perfect.
Jay Bilas
Absolutely perfect.

Now this is before they it was just a two round draft.
Ryan Seacrest
Paulie yeah, 1986 we looked it up and the draft was seven rounds back then. And Jay, picked by the Dallas mavericks.
LeBron James
Picked number 108 in the fifth round out of Duke.
Jay Bilas
What was that night like for you, Jay?
LeBron James
I think it was about 2am when I got drafted. David Stern was in his pajamas, so, yeah, it was a little bit late.
Jay Bilas
Did you go to camp?
LeBron James
I did, yeah. I went to rookie camp with the Mavericks. I did. I went to rookie camp two years in a row and in fact was never cut by the Mavericks. I went over to Italy before veterans camp, before cuts were made. So they actually the Maverick. We used to laugh. Keith Grant was later became the gm. Rick Sund was the guy that drafted me. But years later, when I was doing games, I would see Keith Grant at a game and he'd go, you know, we still hold your rights. And I was like, could you just wave me in the middle of the year just for a joke? That would be great. But they never did.
Jay Bilas
Cooper Flag, it feels like if he was a, an NFL draft prospect at quarterback, we would have negatives attached to him. Right? We just do that with quarterbacks. I haven't read anything really negative about Cooper Flag. I mean, is he that perfect of a prospect at 18 years of age?
LeBron James
Well, I mean, the key of your question there is the 18 years of age thing. You compare him against other players at 18. You know, I think there have been perhaps more, you know, talented players in the past in. In certain areas. You know, like Kevin Durant was a way more talented scorer. You know, we knew. I think a lot of people believed when he came out of Texas that he was going to lead the league in scoring one day. But, you know, Flag's not a guy. You're saying, okay, he's going to lead the league in scoring, but he does everything well. And I. There are certainly areas where he can improve and probably needs to improve. I think his shooting consistency can and. And needs to improve. Although it improved during the year. You know, he shot 44 from three during ACC play. The ACC wasn't the best it's ever been this year, but, you know, you can see he was getting better and better. And I think he can tighten his handle up and become a better ball handler and decision maker. But across the board, it's really rare to find a player that checks so many boxes like he's. He's arguably better defensively than he offensively and he's really formidable on the offensive end. He's just a. He's really a complete player at just 18 and a half and that's like he should still be in high school. There are, there are guys that played in the McDonald's game this last year. Most of the players on the McDonald's All America team this year were older than Cooper Fly.
Jay Bilas
And also the situation he's going into. A lot of times when you're that savior or supposed to be a savior, number one pick and you go to a bad team because, you know, that's why they got the opportunity to draft you. He's going to Dallas. How does that work for him? And May. I don't know if it works against him, but the benefits of going to Dallas.
LeBron James
No, it works for him because he's going to be around veteran players that are hall of Fame caliber players and future hall of Famers that are true pros. So he's not going to be expected to kind of pick up the reins and sort of lead the team and run with the team. He can, he can blend in with anybody. Like, they can play him almost anywhere. And you know, he kind of reminds me his competitive makeup is really unusual. He's. He's different. Like, there are a lot of guys that are really competitive. You know, I hate to lose and all that stuff and want to win at checkers. I'll, you know, run over my little sister to win at this. But he, he takes advantage of every opportunity and he doesn't go into a game thinking, I'm going to get 25 in this one. He just wants to make the right play right now. And then when he stacks enough those, by the end of the game, you know, he'll have 25 and 12 rebounds and six assists and three steals and two blocks. He's that kind of player. So I don't doubt that he's gonna, you know, with his maturity level at that age that he's going to figure it out and, and learn how to, to operate with within the, the confines of a really good team. I think that's a huge factor for him in his development, is he's going to a team that's going to contend as soon as Kyrie gets healthy.
Jay Bilas
Who's the next best player in this draft?
LeBron James
Dylan Harper of Rutgers. I mean, he's the, he's the second best prospect left handed. He's got size, really good length. He's got like a 610 wingspan. He's probably 6, 4, 6, 5, but he really good at pick and roll. He's the best pick and roll guard in this draft and can get into the lane. He makes plays at the rim. He's physical and so he can take, he can absorb a shot and still make a play. You know, he splits defenders. He can read when his reads are really good. But 75 of his points, this is not a negative. 75 of his points came unassisted. He had to do a lot on his own. He played with another great talent in Ace Bailey, but they didn't have much more than that. So he had to, he really had to. They had a losing record. They're 15 and 17, they're 8 and 10 in the, in the Big Ten. You know, they barely made the Big Ten tournament. So you know he's going to face a couple questions about, you know, you had two lottery picks on your team, how'd you not win more? But, but he, he's, he's the real deal. He's really good. And I can't imagine San Antonio trading that pick. I think they're taking him even though they need shooting and he's not a great shooter. He makes shots, but he's not a knockdown shooter. I think he'll improve there. I just can't imagine anybody else going.
Jay Bilas
To con Knipple maybe moving into the top five.
LeBron James
I think he's been there for a while. You know, it's. A lot of people have said the draft starts at three with Philly, so they could be, it could be Vijay edgecombe from Baylor, 19 year old freshman from the Bahamas who's kind of a, reminds me a lot of Victor Oladipo or like a Dwyane Wade at 19. Not saying, you know, he's, he's there. You know, he's those guys when they were, you know, in the NBA. But if you compare him at 19, he compare compares really favorably. Like super athletic, gets to the rim, can really guard, gets a lot done on defense, a lot of deflection steals, stuff like that. I think he had 15 games with multiple steals and had set a freshman record of Baylor for steals. And then you know, you could see Knipple. That's possible because he's the best, he's the best shooter in the draft. But, but I, I make a kind of a qualification. He's the best standstill shooter. So 48 from corner threes. He catches it to shoot it. He doesn't catch it ready to shoot, he catches it to fire it up and you got to take it away from him. And he shot great percentages. But you know, Ace Bailey is the next most talented player after Harper, who is b. It was Harper's teammate at Rutgers and he's a really tough Shot maker. Like, he can make really challenged. He makes NBA shots right now at age, age 18. He's just barely older than Cooper Flagg. Really, really young. But there are some question marks. You know, people say maturity, canceled some workouts, stuff like that, which might not have been the most professional thing to do. I don't have a problem with him not going to workouts. You don't want to go to workout and you're content being drafted a little lower. That's fine. It's your money. But if you, if you schedule a workout, you should show up for it. And he, a couple, you know, maybe once or twice didn't do that. And I think that gets people a little, little nervous.
Jay Bilas
And I'm wondering the strategy behind this, because it feels like their strategy that Ace Bailey's not going to go to Philadelphia. There's certain teams he's not going to work out for. And I don't know if that means they are still going to draft him, or does he want to land with Washington or Brooklyn, or is somebody going to swoop in and say, hey, we can get a bargain here. What do you think the logic is here?
LeBron James
I don't really know. I've heard that's the logic that he'd rather go to a place like Washington or New Orleans, Brooklyn. But that's a lot of money you're giving up just by, you know, from three to six or, you know, who knows, maybe he goes number eight. That, that can happen. I don't, I don't have a pro. Look, if he wants to give up the money, that's his business. I don't, you know, I don't care. Do whatever you want. But, but your point is, is correct. Like, that doesn't stop Philly from taking him at number three. If he's the most talented player. I, I'd take him. If you, if you're convinced that he's the most talented, he's the sort of has the most upside and he does at that spot got the most potential. But it's one of these risk reward things. So you hear people say, well, you know, he's one of those dangerous guys that if you take him and it doesn't work out, you get fired. And if you don't take him and he turns out to be a great player, you get fired. And you're like, well, I mean, I don't know what to tell you. You know, it's the old Hyman Roth line from the Godfather. This is the business we've chosen. I'm sorry. You got the. You got that pick. If you take them, don't take them, you know, but everybody's got a chance to get fired.
Jay Bilas
Jay Billis said the mothership draft coverage starts at 7 Eastern on ESPN, 8 o' clock on ABC. We came up with a nickname for Cooper Flag. You ready?
LeBron James
I'm ready.
Jay Bilas
Okay. He's from Maine, and we thought the rarest of lobsters is the White Lobster. So he would have his logo of a lobster. So he's the White Lobster.
LeBron James
Wow, that's interesting. And I noticed you said we. So you have collective credit. That's so profoundly stupid. It sounds like Paulie came up with it. Wow.
Jay Bilas
Yeah, you're right. He did. Nailed it, you know. You know, profound stupidity. It was very quick when you hit it. Yeah, yeah, he's right there. He hit on it right away. So the white.
LeBron James
Sorry, Polly. I was listening during the break.
Jay Bilas
So White Lobster is.
LeBron James
That was. That was a cheat code.
Jay Bilas
Yeah, I was trying to take a little bit of credit there, but then I wasn't going to take any blame. Yes, Paul.
Ryan Seacrest
Jay, let it marinate a little bit.
LeBron James
Don't be so rushed to make the decision.
Jay Bilas
The White Lobster.
LeBron James
Yeah, well, yeah. Marinade a little butter sauce. There you go.
Jay Bilas
Yeah. Okay.
LeBron James
I do. You know, he has been called the main event.
Jay Bilas
Yeah.
LeBron James
Malika Andrews asked him about it and he said, well, I like it. I just can't imagine somebody calling me that to my face. And, you know, being a Duke guy, he's probably called a lot of things to his face that he doesn't like. But I don't know if we have to force it. Like, I was just up in Maine at a charity event and. And he's a God there. Like, if he walked down the street right next to Taylor Swift, people would knock Taylor Swift over to get to him. Oh, that's how big of a deal he is in Maine. And it's really pretty remarkable that that sort of quiet state. They're obviously incredibly proud. But. But he. Like, I. I don't. I don't think I've seen anything quite like that. The entire state, all they talk about is Cooper flag. And I couldn't walk down the street without getting Cooper flag questions. It was really kind of amazing.
Jay Bilas
Okay, I want you to close your eyes and just envision this with the upcoming season. Kevin Harlan with the call. The White Lobster is on a roll. He just put it in the Biscuit again. A 174 run. And the Hawks want to talk about it. This is the NBA on tnt now. You can open Your eyes.
LeBron James
Yeah, I'm unmoved.
Jay Bilas
Okay.
LeBron James
I don't. I don't see that. I don't see that sticking.
Jay Bilas
Okay, fair enough.
LeBron James
I do have a. I do. I was asked a trivia question recently that got my head scratching.
Jay Bilas
Okay.
LeBron James
The last American born white player to.
Jay Bilas
Go number one overall, Kent Benson.
LeBron James
Very good. That was off the top of your head or had you researched that?
Jay Bilas
Well, how am I doing? You just asked me the question. I didn't know the question before to do my research. Well, yeah, but I wasn't listening when you were told this.
LeBron James
If I would have looked it up, you know, like thought about it. But when I was asked a couple months ago, I. I was scratching my head going back. But Ken Benson is exactly right. I went toward Bill Walton.
Jay Bilas
Yeah, but follow the game a little closer than you do. Especially college Jay. Okay. I mean, Mark Allery, I think, was drafted by the Bullets, wasn't he?
LeBron James
No, he was drafted by the Denver Nuggets. He went number 16 overall.
Jay Bilas
Did he play for the Bullets?
LeBron James
So he went to the Nuggets.
Jay Bilas
Did he eventually play for the Bullets?
LeBron James
Yeah, he was traded to the Bullets, so. And still lives in the Washington area. Lives in Bethesda now.
Jay Bilas
Yeah. Okay. And his daughter, one of his daughters, really good in college, I think.
LeBron James
Yeah. His daughter Bella was an All American at Princeton, was the fifth overall pick of the Dallas Wings in the WNBA draft. And now she's an assistant. She's my goddaughter now, an assistant coach at Georgetown.
Jay Bilas
Okay. Yeah. Has the Nil ERA been good for college basketball?
LeBron James
Yeah, it certainly made it more honest. I know some of the old school coaches don't like it, and the NCAA is still, you know, fighting the idea of calling athletes employees. They don't want to do that. But it looks like, look, you know my stance on this. This has been professional sports for a long time and they've been violating federal antitrust law by limiting the players. They're still violating it with this new settlement. But at least the new settlement gives the NCAA some time to come up with a framework that's going to work long term. And that is either going to be, in my view, collective bargaining with the players or going to Congress and asking Congress to make this House settlement into law for them. But it's not going to look exactly like the House settlement. I can't imagine a scenario where Congress says, yes, we're willing to limit the players, but coaches, you can still make 10, $12 million and we'll call this. We'll call this day like, everybody's going to be limited if that. If Congress comes in, but it buys them some time to actually get this thing right. But what it's doing, Dan, I think it's keeping more players in school longer, which is what the system says they've always wanted. If you believe in education, they're getting more education, and the schools are benefiting because they're getting more years of service out of their. Out of their player assets. So I don't think it's. It's anything but a good thing. And the players are becoming not only financially literate, they. They can. They can have generational wealth from this if they do it the right way. You're still going to have some players that blow the money or whatever that's going to happen. But I think it's nothing but a good thing. They just have to figure out the. The structure of it to make it work for everybody.
Jay Bilas
We were reminiscing of players we thought coming out of college were going to be hall of Famers, like Glenn Robinson. We just thought, that guy can't miss. There were certain guys where you go, okay, that guy is going to be incredible. Give me the guy that you whiffed on. There you go. That guy is going to be a.
LeBron James
Hall of Famer that I whiffed on. Well, I thought Odin was going to be really good, and I do think it was because of injury. I. I just don't know of. Of any teams that wouldn't have taken him. Number one in 07, maybe there might have been one or two. And I don't remember a whole lot of us talking heads, shaking our fists, saying, this is crazy. You have to take Kevin Durant. There might have been some of those, but I don't remember very many. But, yeah, that was a whiff. And that's. That's probably one of the things that. This is my 23rd draft, and I think when I first started doing it, I probably arrogantly thought, after doing all this work that I knew, you know, I know that whether this player is going to be good or not, and maybe having my first draft be the LeBron draft, where you did know, but, you know, now I believe certain things, but, you know, everybody that nobody knows, like, you know, hands up all those that thought that Shea Gilgis Alexander, when he was taken 11th overall, was going to be an MVP or when Nicola Jokic was taken during a Taco Bell commercial, we were in commercial, and it was a Taco Bell commercial, and he got drafted in the 40s, and now he's considered the best player in the world. We don't know. You do the best you can and you have players you like and players you question, and some of the players you question turn out to be great and some of the players you like turn out to be less than that. It's a weird process, but we're going to look back this year and say, how did we miss on ace renewal or stuff like that? You know that's going to happen, too.
Jay Bilas
The former Dallas Maverick great Jay Billis. More of Jay tonight where he probably drops in White Lobster. I'm get. I'm just guessing right now. I'm just guessing. There is a casual mention of the White Lobster tonight and you don't have to give credit. You can take all the credit. You can take credit.
LeBron James
Unless it blows. Unless it blows up completely. I'll go. This was Paulie's.
Jay Bilas

I love going to the movies and there's nothing like a summer blockbuster. You know, those big loud, thrilling popcorn, flying edge of your seat kind of movies. I absolutely love Those movies. And F1 the movie. It checks every single one of those boxes. Brad Pitt plays Sonny Hayes, a former Formula one driver who gets one last shot at redemption decades after stepping away from the sport. This is a big movie. It feels big and that's because it is. It's from the same people that brought you Top Gun Mavericks so you already know it delivers on action and it gives you that first hand driver's point of view. You know, it takes you right inside the cockpit of the car. It is just an incredib well shot movie. I took my 15 year old son to see it and his review was and I quote yo, that movie was lit so I'm pretty sure he enjoyed that. Do yourself a favor, go see it on a big screen. The biggest screen that you could find. We went to go see it in IMAX and it was perfect.
Jay Bilas
Absolutely perfect.

He took time out from Bill Belichick to spend a little time with the NFL and now I want you to dumb this down though, Pablo. Okay. And just so our audience knows exactly what the NFL are they guilty of or being accused of?
Ryan Seacrest
They are being accused of quite a bit. They are guilty. And that is, I'll use that word, sort of conversational.
Jay Bilas
Okay.
Ryan Seacrest
They were found by the arbitrator to have attempted to collude with the 32 NFL teams. We have extensive documentation now, by the way, hello. Thank you for having me. This is a 61 page document that has been suppressed by both the league, the owners and the union in which there's a treasure trove, Dan. And there's just one bit of vocabulary that I want to do at the top, which is expedited discovers. What does this mean? It means that you get all of the texts, the emails, the documents, the private messages, the slideshows, all of the secret stuff from owners, players, agents, executives. It's the treasure trove. And so the question of there is a treasure trove. There's a finding that the NFL encouraged the owners to collude to prevent the next Deshaun Watson contract. You'll recall, that was fully guaranteed. Unprecedented. They wanted to stop Lamar Jackson, Russell Wilson, Kyler Murray. That same summer of 2022, they wanted to stop that from happening. So into all of this, I guess I walk in and I'm like, oh, man, I think I can get this document. And I now have a sense of why the union and the league, neither side wanted this out there. And that was the question. Why haven't we heard about this? Well, there's a. There's a lot deeper here that explains that, too.
Jay Bilas
Okay, but do you need to have a slideshow sent out, a memo to not be stupid like the Cleveland Browns were with Deshaun Watson?
Ryan Seacrest
Well, it's a great question. And so despite that, despite what seems obvious, Roger Goodell, in repeated emails with Jeff Pash as general counsel, had this exact conversation. We need to make sure that they don't do this. And so there's this thing called the NFL Management Council, Dan. And this is a shadowy entity that I didn't understand before I reported this story. But at the league annual meetings. All right, I'll set the scene. It's Palm Beach. It's a big conference room. Into this walk the 32 owners and the representatives at the front of the room are the head and the. The executives in charge of the NFL mc. And there's a slideshow presentation. And in the slides, there is written off to the side for the presenters to see the results of these emails that Roger Goodell had written back and forth with Jeff Pash in which they wanted to spare no ambiguity as to the fact that this would be a problem if anybody else did this. So it's a great question. A horrible contract. We laughed at it at the time, and yet. But it's so symptomatic of the level of control and cohesion when it comes to why they didn't want to even allow the possibility that someone would be dumb enough to do this again.
Jay Bilas
Did teams collude or was the NFL asking them to collude?
Ryan Seacrest
That is the key distinction that the arbitrator drew is that the NFL encouraged them to do it. Here are the documents. Here are the emails. But they didn't have admissions on the record. And Certainly they had denials from the eight NFL owners that they had witness testimony from that they again, spoiler alert that they did not sign another Deshaun Watson style contract. Right? There were never guarantees like that again. But the arbitrator could not prove that that was because the NFL had encouraged them. What we did see though, in these documents, it's just over and over again of private text messages between the owner of the Cardinals and the owner of the Chargers in which they are celebrating how Kyler Murray's contract was going to be not guaranteed and how in fact, as Michael Bidwell, the owner of the Cardinals says, and I'll just quote this, gets a text message from Dean Spanos. Dean Spanos says, congratulations on signing Murray. Michael Bidwill says, thanks, Dino. These QB deals are expensive, but we limited the fully guaranteed money at some pretty good language. Thankfully you have a QB that's worth paying. Spano says in response, your deal helps us for our quarterback next year. And so look everybody, Dan, the thing I'm struck by, right, as you go through all of this and there are so many examples like this, you have the Broncos owners deliberating internally their internal messages in which they are saying, we're not going to give Russell Wilson the guaranteed deal that he wants. Of course we're not. Even though he's demanding it. We have Lamar Jackson, the backstory of that deal, right? He, we have texts from Lamar, messages saying to the Ravens, I want a fully guaranteed deal in all caps. We now know, by the way, that thanks to this document, after they of course non exclusively franchise tagged him, that was their, you know, solution, that he got zero offers from other teams. Zero. The mvp, zero. And so the question you ask yourself is, okay, why was any of the encouragement in that NFL MC meeting responsible for it? The arbitrator could not, not publicly, certainly publicly, but did not privately feel comfortable ruling it was because of the, of the league's guidance. And so many things can be true.
Jay Bilas
Why would the players association be in cahoots with this since they would want their players to be paid as much as possible?
Ryan Seacrest
That's the best question, right? So the NFLPA sources at the union have always, you know, they've dreamed of this, right? Because in this document, it's not merely the Mike Florio's of the world who are yelling about this and saying, this is how they're like backstage. Trust me, you see it in 4K quality. It's been, it's been described to me, this document as a holy grail for the union. And so why did they not want this out there? A couple of reasons. But I think the best summary to dumb it down for everybody, because there's a lot here is that that the NFL Players association has been the product of a regime change after DeMora Smith, their executive director, in which JC Treader, former Browns center, became the NFLPA president, two term president. But this same month of March 2022, by the way, he got cut from the Browns simultaneously. D. Smith that same month, March 2022 says okay, I guess I'm on the way out. JC Treader decides I'm going to run this search in a very confidential, secret way. It's going to result in this new guy, Lloyd Howell, the new executive director of the union. Which is all to say that when it comes to why the union didn't act, you look to J.C. treader, you look to Lloyd Howell. There's a lot there in those two guys that's in this story, in this episode. But they did not want this released in part because J.C. tretter in the document is referenced privately trashing Russell Wilson, blaming him, Russell Wilson for not getting the fully guaranteed contract that everybody wanted him to. Get to your point, of course you want the full guarantees. J.C. treader, president of the union, is privately insulting Russell Wilson, saying that he is the reason why we're never going to get the full guarantees again, effectively. And so. So if you're the president of the union who wants to be the next executive director of the union to replace the guy you hand picked to replace D. Smith, this is something that looks terrible, I have been told. And so again, cover up, you could argue as much as these infractions, these, I won't say crimes for legal reasons. But as much as these missteps and embarrassing things are bad, the COVID up dam that's always worse, right? And the question of why didn't you hear? It's about self interest from individuals instead of the collective good of the players and the union. Which is why this is such an insanely interesting story to me.
Jay Bilas
Before I let you go, any updates on Bill Belichick and, and his girlfriend?
Ryan Seacrest
