Well, we made it to a Friday. It's a meat Friday, but our chef down for the count. Dylan got hurt yesterday afternoon playing pickleball. And once again, not having Tyro pickleball shoes on. So he is got a banged up ankle. So much so he didn't even tell me what the menu is. I don't know what we're having for meat Friday right now, but Dylan is here. As he said, hey, I'm at. I'm at least here to try to put on this Friday meal. I don't know what we're having. He doesn't have the energy to, I guess write that down or type that up. But. So I can't have you live vicariously through us. I'm not quite sure what we're having, but. Yes, yes, yes. Marvin.
Jay Shetty
I was told we're having lamb burgers in chicken Slovakia.
Dan Patrick
Okay, so who's got it better than we do? Oh, boy. Well, he doesn't know if he can go all the way through and make the meal. So now you got Tyler. Tyler used to do the job, so now he's bringing Tyler in. There's a little bit of friction because Tyler lost his job to Dylan. And then Weeks, our cameraman, is helping out in the kitchen. It's kind of a mess right now. Normally, meat Friday is a great day, great moment for us, but it feels like there's some tension in the room. Yes, Todd. Tyler's spinning a spatula around. Is that like, warming up in the bullpen? He's got, like, different cooking equipment that.
Jay Shetty
He just kind of flipping around back there.
Dan Patrick
Thank you, Todd. Well, stat of the day brought to you by Panini America. The official trading cards of this program. First hour, brought to you by Tire Rack. They've been helping customers find the right tires for how and what and where they drive. We had an incident yesterday with PA Ray. He had a flat tire. He didn't know how to change the tire. He then, on the verge of tears, comes to me and starts talking about tire rack. Could I reach out to tire rack? And I said, you can do it. Tire rack dot com. Dan, tell him what you drive, what kind of tire you need. So he needed a replacement, a Han Cook tire. So we took care of that yesterday, and the tire is on its way today. Tirerack.com the way tire buying should be. All right, we had football ish last night. And depending on your viewpoint here if you're a Lions fan, then you probably go, yeah, what's preseason? It doesn't really matter if you're a Chargers fan. You go, hey, look pretty good last night. Yeah, I'm thinking AFC title game. We're running the football there. That's Jim Harbaugh football. That's what it is right there. Trey Lance looked pretty good last night. And if you're a Charger fan, okay, you gotta be happy. But it's. It's interesting how you can have an approach where the game doesn't mean anything or the game means a little bit more than it's supposed to. That's preseason football. And. And preseason football isn't pretty because it's a prime example of, hey, let's just get out there and let's take our organized scrimmage and just put it on national TV and you'll be able to see warts and all kind of what's going on preseason. A series of glorified tune ups. But it's still entertaining. And, you know, you're trying to watch a little bit and just kind of gather. All right, what's this mean? Or who's that player? Sometimes it's just a vibe, you know, you're watching Dan, you know, these are two of the more animated coaches with Jim Harbaugh and Dan Campbell. And then it's the hall of Fame weekend and you're celebrating. All those players were going in, players who come back for that. Brett Musburger was in the booth last night. And you end up telling stories more than showcasing the game. But it was fun. But football is here. We have turned the page. We're in the month of August and it's full speed ahead, except for the commanders with Terry McLaurin, because now he's requested a trade and you start to. These things normally work out, but at what point do you go? If you're Terry McLaurin, the point of no return because he wants to be paid more than $30 million. I don't know if it's 32, $33 million. He's a big reason why Jaden Daniels played so well last year. And you brought in Debo Samuel, but Debo Samuel is not Debo Samuel anymore. And he's not the kind of receiver that Terry McLaurin is. Terry McLaurin, if you throw it in his area, he's going to get it. Contested catches. He was number one in the NFL the last five years. This is what you need. With Jaden Daniels going into a second year, you got momentum you got the defending super bowl champs in your division, and this is that hold up. This is that hiccup. This is something that could derail bigger dreams that they have. But Terry McLaren has requested a trade from the Commanders. And I don't know if this heats things up or the Commanders actually go, all right, but here's the problem. If I'm a Commanders fan, you're not going to get dollar for dollar for Terry McLaurin. You're going to get draft picks. Because if you're trading Terry McLaurin to a team, you're probably trading him to a team that is a playoff team that might go, hey, you know, the Chargers are a name that came up. The 49ers are name that came up. The Patriots a name that came up. I mean, there's going to be teams that will be waiting and seeing. What would it cost to get Terry McLaurin? You still have to pay him, but you're going to get a guy who's going to sign a new contract with you, and you'd have him probably for the next four years. He probably looks around and goes, okay, Cortland Sutton signed four years, 92 million. Well, I'm better than him. We're the same age. Brandon Iuk got $30 million. I'm better than him. He's not better than CD Lamp like you. Now, you have to take inventory, and you have to be honest with yourself. Your agent has to be honest with you and say, hey, I don't think you're there. You're not in Justin Jefferson, Jamar Chase category. Now, are you the next level? Maybe. And what is commensurate to your. Your production, your output? But that, that's. I mean, that's a really, really important situation here. Now you got the Bengals with Trey Hendrickson. He's still on the outside, but at least he's in camp. Terry McLaurin, when you say, hey, trade me, that's a little bit different. Now, you know, once again, this comes down to war words, leverage, and they could wrap this up, you know, probably in a half hour meeting and say, all right, I'll take this, I'll surrender that. Next thing you know, Terry McLaurin's in camp. But, you know, the potential for disaster here looms pretty big because Jaden Daniels, you want him to take that next step. Second year, we see quarterbacks, sometimes they take a little bit of a dip, and I would love to keep that momentum the best I can if I'm the commanders. And sometimes it's a couple of million dollars. And this goes back to what I've said about the Cowboy situation with Micah Parsons. You're probably going to be spending $8 million more than you need to each year with Micah Parsons because you could have gotten him for maybe $34 million. Now it's probably going to be 42. Well, this is where you lose a couple of players, couple million dollars here. Now we have to let that guy go. It was a couple of million dollars with Derrick Henry and I go back to that couple of million dollars you could have had. Derrick Henry, who wanted to play for the Cowboys, is from Dallas, wanted to play for you. But a couple of million dollars. But Trey Hendrickson, Terry McLaren, Micah Parsons, I think all of them get done. But it's only because I've been doing this for a long, long time and they usually get done. Somebody doesn't get traded and you have a hold in and that's so they don't get fined. But it was football last night and it was still fun. And you know, great hall of Fame weekend coming up there in Canton, Ohio. Trade deadline. Boy, the artist formerly known as the Minnesota Twins. I would think program sales will probably be pretty high for the Twins fans because I think they traded nine players over the past couple of weeks. So nine of 26 players on their major league roster were traded during the trade deadline period. Seven of them were traded yesterday. Now, if I'm a fan of the Twins, if I know and I can trust the front office that in three years from now we might look back on this and say, hey man, that was the turning point. Look at the players we got or the draft picks we got. I don't know how many teams can sign up for the Miami Marlins blueprint because they won two World Series titles and it felt like every five years here they are. And then they take the wrecking ball to the roster and then they build it back up again. You have to have extreme confidence in your front office to be able to do that. But Minnesota Twins traded nine of 26 players on their major league roster. Alrighty. 8773 DP show email address dpdanpatrick.com Twitter handle @DP Show Good morning. Jay Shetty
What's in worse shape? Race cart? Dylan's ankle or Todd?
Dan Patrick
Wow. Okay, Todd, are you in bad shape? I could be in a lot better shape. Okay. Ray's car is going to get fixed because tire rack will take care of that. Dylan will eventually get healthier and then he'll get, I mean, I don't want to set the bar. No, his ankle will get healthier. Will it ever be the same again?
Jay Shetty
Really? I don't know.
Dan Patrick
He, but he has to get Tyrell pickleball shoes. That'll help. But, and, and Todd takes his daily. I'm not going to pick on Todd today. Is that breaking news? That would be extremely breaking news. I, I, I'm taking the under on that one if we're doing odds. Okay. Now, I've been told, I've been told, sources close to me, that Todd is going to take a shot at me in a song coming up a little bit later on.
Jay Shetty
I don't know if it's a shot at you per se. It's a shot at something.
Dan Patrick
Okay. You got your hall and Oats T shirt on.
Jay Shetty
I do.
Dan Patrick
Sending a message. Yes. Yeah. Once again, you're going to take a shot at me. I guess. Yeah, I guess you could. I'm going to wait for you to fire first. Once again, I don't start them, I end them. Okay. Yeah.
Jay Shetty
That's a good attitude.
Dan Patrick
You come in peace, you leave in pieces.
Jay Shetty
Wow, that sounds like a bumper sticker.
Dan Patrick
Is that a movie? It's, it's a line from Jay Billis. He was in a movie and I think that was the line.
Jay Shetty
I thought Arnold Schwarzenegger said that in some movie like I come in peace, you go in pieces.
Dan Patrick
I thought, I thought Jay Billis was the one involved in that movie or something. Can we. What? I don't know if I just made something up here.
Jay Shetty
Let's see the Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Dan Patrick
Say, Wait, are you taking a shot at me? I am a little bit. Yeah. I'm going to be really sensitive today.
Jay Shetty
No, you're not.
Dan Patrick
Yes, I am. I'm going to be really sensitive. Okay. Yes, Paul, I have, I have that line. I come in peace.
Jay Shetty
You go in pieces from a show.
Dan Patrick
Called Dark angel, which I don't know. And was Jay Billis on Dark Angel?
Jay Shetty
Yes.
Dan Patrick
Thank you. Thank you. Back to you. I don't, I don't know if that's the stat of the day, Marvin.
Jay Shetty
Jay Billis was on Dark angel, but.
Dan Patrick
I did Dolph Lundgren have the line. Dolph Lundgren, let's go.
Jay Shetty
This just got even better.
Dan Patrick
He's in the scene. Maybe it's Dolph Lundgren. Says it to Jay Billis. Something about showing up, you come in peace, you leave in pieces. Yes. Todd was Jessica Alba in Dark Angel.
Jay Shetty
That was some other Angel TV show.
Dan Patrick
That's in the last. I'm just asking for a friend. Okay. Okay. So what's, what's another poll question there? She was in a show called Dark Angel. Jessica Alva. That's funny. I'm right. Being on the COVID of TV Guide. She got a new boyfriend. Oh, yeah. Yeah. She. She broke up with Cash Warren and now she's got a new, new boyfriend.
Jay Shetty
She cashed out.
Dan Patrick
Thank you. What other poll question do you have? Do we go with Terry McLaurin? You trade him or pay him? You can.
Jay Shetty
I mean, we can if you're a commander.
Dan Patrick
I gotta, I gotta pay him. Okay, here's another topic. And, and we'll have to have more time on this. If you're a fan, are you on Terry McLaurin's side to say, hey, he produced for us. He didn't have great quarterbacks prior to last year. He was a constant. He was a class act out of Ohio State. Or do you go, come on, you're gonna screw up our season here? Because I think that's how fans react that, hey, this is about us. This isn't about you. Come on, do you really need 33 million? You know, so that. I think that, that, that's the interesting part of this. I think when fans see a holdout, they're not on the player's side with that holdout. We'll talk to Louis Riddick, former front office executive. He is a former player, works for the mothership. He'll join us. Coming up, we will get to phone calls. Operator Tyler is sitting by 877-3DP show. Just getting started on this meat Friday Dan and the Dan at Stan Patrick Show.

Pickleball is booming, certainly around the Man Cave. Tyrell is leading the charge. It's the first shoe built for pickleball, and Dylan wasn't wearing Tyrell pickleball shoes yesterday and he is laid up with a sprained ankle. So play longer, move quicker, and look like a pro. Tyrell. T Y r o l pickleball.com we'll get to your phone calls. Settle on a poll question. Lewis Riddick of the Mothership. He's a ESPN NFL and college football analyst and worked in the front office of the Commanders and the Eagles. Former NFL safety. Good to see you again. Let me start with Washington with Terry McLaren. He's requested a trade. Now, if you were working in the front office with the Commanders, how would you read when that. It's not a demand, a request. What's that mean to you?
Jay Shetty
And it's basically the same thing to me, especially, you know, in the context of, you know, what he's saying is, if you're not going to meet, if we're not going to be able to kind of like, come to some kind of agreement here in terms of the pay raise for me, given that I'm entering into the last year of my contract, then just trade me. If you really. If we're really this far apart as far as how we see my value going forward, then go ahead and trade me. Which they're saying, look, that's ridiculous. We're not going to do that. You know, they're probably they're thinking, look, we still hold the cards. We could wind up making him play out this year at the current salary, franchise him for 20, 26, and then, you know, make. Let him be a free agent. There's a lot of things that they can do that they don't. That they can do that really require them not doing anything at all, which is just sitting there. And he knows that. And then really, the only recourse that you have as a player, Dan, as you know, is. Is like, the only thing you recourse you have is to withhold services, so. Or asked to be moved somewhere else. And, you know, whether he's saying, look, I'm requesting a trade, demanding a trade, obviously he's ticked off because him and his agent, Buddy Baker, obviously see his value going forward is much different. And objectively, based upon how he played last year, they have an argument, okay.
Dan Patrick
But let's look at the. What is reasonable for it. Let's say you ran the commanders.
Jay Shetty
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
You want to resign him. He's better than Brandon Iuk, who's getting 30, but he's not Jamar Chase or Justin Jefferson. He's not CD Lamb. So where's the landing spot there?
Jay Shetty
I think. I think you just said the magic number. And I've been saying this on tv. I said it on social media last night. I think 30 million is the magic number for me that. I think if I was Adam Peters, I would be saying, okay, look, this is where this needs to be. Realistically now, if he's thinking, I need to be up here at 33, 34, then obviously I'm going, well, we probably can't get there. And we know that the sweet spot in any negotiation, in any ultimate deal, is where you're not happy with exactly where you got to, but you're not dying over it either. And that goes for both sides of the equation, both management and the player. And I think that's the area where I would be like, saying, look, if we're here, then, okay, I'm good with this. I'm good with this. And. And that's me trying to, like, remove the emotion of how I feel about Terry McLaurin, the person and the player out of it, okay? Because there's no doubt that what he has done in the past, he has earned it. He has earned. Look, he's earned every penny that he has made to this point. And I think if you were just going to factor in what he has meant to this organization, you could probably make an argument for it being even higher in the 31, 32 area, you know, when we're just taking into account the entire player. But from a strictly business sense, I'd be comfortable with 30 million per year. It sounds like, from what I've heard, that maybe they may be looking for an average that's even higher than that. That puts him into that stratospheric level, which I would be a little bit wary of doing as well.
Dan Patrick
But do front offices pay you on what you've done or what they think you'll do? Because Trey Hendrickson did everything, outperformed TJ Watt the last two years. Terry McLaurin, he produced last year, but it feels like, yeah, but you're 30 years of age now. What are you. It. We're not paying you on what you did, we're paying you on what we think you can do.
Jay Shetty
I say this all the time. Look, contracts are about future performance, projection. I, I say that, like, almost annoyingly so on TV all the time. And I'm. And I'm with you. Look, but I also am someone who doesn't believe that 30 years old all of a sudden is some kind of big, giant boogeyman that people constantly lean on to say, oh, but he's going to be 30. Okay, well, if I really want to get technical, Terry's not going to be 30 until the middle of September. So what does that mean for the. Just. I know people use that as this line of demarcation to say, well, now the tide has turned. Now it's nothing but downhill for this player. And that's not true. It's just not true. I think you have to take every one of these cases case by case, understand what his history has been as far as his availability, his durability, his training habits, his personal life, all of that, and make a reasonable projection going forward about, okay, do we think we can get the roi, the return on investment that we're looking for? And I think with Terry, everything that I've heard is that he's not someone I would bet against. I wouldn't be trying to negotiate against what he has done in the past because he has shown that he is an ultimate professional. And yeah, you know what? There are also people who make arguments for players based on what they've done in the past. Almost as if players deserve some things, you know, a premium above and beyond what you rationally think he may. May have earned going forward simply because of how good of a pro he has been on and off the field. And Terry probably falls into that category. What's Interesting about this situation, man, is that there are people who are really split on this. They really are. People are like, hey, Washington, Adam Peters should make his stand and Terry should just play out the deal because he is going to be 30 and he's not a great separator. He's not DK Metcalf, he's not Justin Jefferson. Then there's people who go, have you looked at the objective data on this guy? Have you looked at the effect on the QBR and the quarterback rating of Jayn Daniels when they're targeting him? Have you looked at he was top three in the league in touchdown receptions last year? Have you looked at the number of first downs he produced last year, which was up there with the elite players in the league? Have you looked at how strong he is at the catch one, the number of contested catches he made and the time and the number of first downs he produced? Well, why wouldn't you project that that's going to get better this year? As Jaden gets better, the run game gets better. They're in year two of this program. I would be comfortable projecting his production to stay right where it is, if not improving based on all those factors. But, you know, we have this tendency to want to say, well, he's 30 years old now, there's no way he can get better. Just like saying the same thing about quarterbacks, that the year two jinxes is coming and that Jaden won't get better. I think everything is trending the right way in Washington. I hope they're able to land somewhere in that low 30 range or maybe right around 30 and Terry can get in there because this could be very, very, very disruptive to this offense if it, if it's one of these things that gets extended into the regular season.
Dan Patrick
Talking to Louis Riddick of the Mothership, would you rather pay DK Metcalf or Terry McLaurin?
Jay Shetty
It's a great question. I would probably, at this point, I would. I would rather pay Terry simply because of the person and the player and how much I trust the player and how much I know that the effect that he has on the football team from a. Just from. From a cultural standpoint. And I know this, going back to his days that Ohio State, I loved. I love this dude. When he came out and he was someone who was kind of like severely overlooked. And I think he's still being overlooked and a little bit disrespected now. But see, what people fall in love with is the fact that, look, DK is huge. He's an absolute freak. He's fast. He has a flair for the dramatic. I just want the steady, consistent producer that if. You know what, if you ramped up McLaren's targets to the degree, like, say, like a Jamar Chase or Justin Jefferson had, you'd see the kind of production that you just couldn't deny. But then there's this. There's this aesthetic, you know, part of this thing where you sit there and go, but he's not 6 4, and he's not 215. He doesn't run 4 2. Well, get off of that. And just look at the game and watch him play and what he means to Jaden Daniels. I think that's all you need to see.
Dan Patrick
What do you look for in a preseason game?
Jay Shetty
Yeah, I'm a little bit of a geek, man. I like. I love watching all the second and third round players. I like. You know what I like seeing? I mean, second and third, second, third, fourth, fifth round guys who are really just fighting to kind of make a team. What I look for, I look for the uncovered gems. I look for execution amongst the guys who, you know, are going to be on the football team regardless of the level of competition they're playing against.
Dan Patrick
Okay, but what did you see from Trey Lance last night?
Jay Shetty
Exactly. That's my point. That's just what I was going to get to. It's about execution for Trey. It's about the comfort level for Trey. It's about the timing that he played with, the accuracy that he played with, the fact that he played with his shoulders back and he was kind of had his head up and he was like he was feeling good. He never has looked like that. He's never looked like that in his career. I don't care if it was against the Lions and Canton at a Hall of Fame game. Jim Harbaugh is having some kind of effect on this young man, and he has finally hit his stride. After being so green coming out of college with such little play time, he's finally hit his stride. And I think. I think we know this and you know this for sure, man. We have seen in the recent past how much quarterback development is not a set thing in terms of its timing. You have to be willing to be more patient now than I think you've ever been, simply because the variance between organizations and programs is so great. You just don't know. You just don't know how guys are going to gel from one place to the next. I know it's only one game, but I'll tell you what. In all my time of watching Trey Lance, and I was a huge supporter of Trey Lance and I felt like, man, did I really just blow that and get that wrong. I saw something last night I've never seen before. I'm hoping he can continue it and he sticks there and eventually he gets his shot.
Dan Patrick
But I don't think we're patient at all. I think we're less patient because it used to be you could be a number one pick and sit for a couple of years. I mean, it doesn't happen like that. It's. Hey, did you see what C.J. stroud did his rookie year? Hey, did you see what Jaden Daniels did his rookie year? Drake May. Why can't all these quarterbacks be the same?
Jay Shetty
You're right.
Dan Patrick
I mean, it's quick. We get you in, you know, into the washing machine and, and all of a sudden you come out. How do you smell? If not, I'm going to put you back in and we'll move on. You know, it doesn't take long for these teams to go. We tried it for a year or two years. Now we're going to go try to find our quarterback again.
Jay Shetty
Yeah. You know, ironically, Chris Ballard was just talking about this in regards to Anthony Richardson, about the fact that he has seen. And he knows it and I know GMs are talking about it. He's seen, you know, recently when you're looking at guys like Baker Mayfield and how it took a little bit, you know, for him to kind of finally hit his stride. Sam Darnold, in the kind of year that he had last year, he has seen that, hey, look, we need to be. Maybe we need to rethink the amount of time that we give these guys, regardless of where, of where we drafted them and what our initial expectations are, because everyone's just different. The problem is, look, owners are impatient, fans are impatient. We're just living in an impatient world where we just want instant gratification right now. Hell, we have rookie quarterbacks in camp right now who after one week, they have a one bad period and we're going bust. Get him out of there. Get the next guy in there. We, I mean, and, and we know, look, we've just seen cases where guys finally found their, found their right fit and then they finally take off. Geno Smith, another one. But we don't care. We don't care about that. We're like, I don't care. I don't want to wait that long. Either this guy shows me right away out the gate or we're Moving on to the next guy. It's. It's an interesting. It's an interesting case study, but I, But I think with Trey Lance, he's probably going to be the next one. That it'll be interesting to see if he can continue on with this kind of momentum and whether or not he ultimately gets a shot to play somewhere else and actually play a lot of football. Because in la, he ain't playing ahead of Justin Herbert.
Dan Patrick
Well, he's only 25.
Jay Shetty
Exactly.
Dan Patrick
I mean that.
Jay Shetty
Exactly.
Dan Patrick
Guys don't even really come into their prime. And now because they're coming in young, you know, Anthony Richardson, 20 years of age.
Jay Shetty
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
I mean, you either know or you. I think you either know right away that somebody can or can't play. I think you can see how they, they prepare, work ethic, leadership. I mean, all of that stuff. But I still go back to Trey Lance and I go. Not enough sample size with games. So he gave me one miracle season at North Dakota State. I need more. It's like Zach Wilson, I need. I need more because Bo Nix gave me 50. Jaden Daniels gave me 60 starts in college. But now I know what I have. At least I have a better understanding of what I have. Mitchell Trubisky was really one good year in college. Those guys scare me. Anthony Richardson wasn't even a starter. Consistent starter. He showed flashes, but it wasn't enough for me to go. He's a top five pick.
Jay Shetty
Yeah. And that's. See that, that's the, that's the balance in the internal, both individually and organizationally fight that every team has every year. When you're talking about players who are supremely gifted, who may not have the resume that you're talking about, versus players who have great production, a long history or a much longer history of production, but name may not be as gifted. Which way do they lean? And a lot of times, because of, I mean, let's just be honest, because of the, let's say the ego of people in the NFL. And we all have it. They believe, you know what, I can make this guy into exactly what I want him because just look at these traits. Damn, you got to have these traits. I don't want this guy who's a little bit lesser of an athlete, a little bit lesser of a player who may be topped out. They always talk about, you know, you always have these conversations about what is ultimately the ceiling of this player, this guy's ceiling so much higher. And with our great genius coaching and development, we're going to get it out of him. We're going to develop the next hall of Famer. And that's the risk that you take. Like with Anthony in particular. Look, everybody in Indianapolis knows, and he knows himself, that the biggest thing holding Anthony Richardson back was Anthony Richardson. And it was. It was the thing. And I wanted to jump in and say this while you were talking, but I didn't want to interrupt you. But the biggest thing with him is the maturity factor, the football character factor, the commitment factor about it being constant and consistent and constantly training the way it needs to. Because if he can get that. And he is fighting an uphill battle now, especially what happened with him down in Houston, he's fighting that. That that image is burned into some people's brains for eternity. And no matter what he does, they're never going to feel as though he has the. Has what it takes to be a franchise quarterback. But that's what he's fighting now, because from an athletic standpoint and a trade standpoint, you've already seen him in Indianapolis make throws that nobody can make in the league. That's that battle all the time. And with Bo Nixon, how many people killed Bo Nix coming out in the draft last year and said, Sean Payton doesn't know what he's doing. What's he doing? This guy doesn't have any upside. This guy's. He's got. And now, now Sean Payton's going, told you. See. So, yeah, it's a, it's a fascinating thing that front offices go through every year.
Dan Patrick
I was thinking about this with the AFC west that you got Andy Reid, hall of Famer, Pete Carroll, maybe Hall of Famer, borderline Sean Payton, maybe Hall of Fame, Jim Harbaugh, hall of Fame caliber coach with college and pro. And I was thinking, and we had a division that's had four hall of Fame like coaches at the same time. And I thought about the Giants with Parcells, Washington with Joe Gibbs. I don't know if they were all there at the same time, but let's say I had Jimmy Johnson, Bill Parcells, Dick Vermeil with the Eagles and Joe Gibbs. I don't know if they were there at the same time, but those are four hall of Fame coaches in the same division. I don't know if it was at the same time.
Jay Shetty
Yeah, it. It is. The west has really, for me, exploded onto the scene this year in particular because of what you're talking about and will be the. I mean, there will be some absolute Kong versus Godzilla type battles all year long.
Dan Patrick
Well, how would you rank them? So Andy Reed. Andy Reid is top.
Jay Shetty
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
Now who's the second best coach in the AFC West?
Jay Shetty
Sean Peyton.
Dan Patrick
Who's third?
Jay Shetty
Oh, wow. Look, I, I would say it's Pete because of what Pete has done in the NFL already. And then, and then Jim. And look, there, there are people who will, who will debate that bottom three guys or the next three after Andy and probably put in all kinds of different order. But in my experience, look, Sean Payton, in my experience is kind of like underrated in many respects. He doesn't get, he doesn't, he's not constantly in the discussion as far as when we're talking about offensive geniuses, just good team builders, good coaches who, who are great at utilizing players and understanding their strengths and weaknesses. But he's one of the best I've ever seen.
Dan Patrick
What is he in the category with Tomlin and John Harbaugh, who both won a Super bowl and so does Sean Payton.
Jay Shetty
Absolutely. He's absolutely in that, in that category.
Dan Patrick
Okay.
Jay Shetty
And I, and I've gotten, I've had the fortune, you know, good fortune of being able to spend a lot of time talking to both of those guys and talking to Sean Payton. You sit and talk to Sean Payton about football. It is a tutorial. You will fill up notebooks, you'll want to write down every single thing that he says. And you can't argue with the way in which he has built teams in conjunction with the gmc, worked with over the years and what he's doing in Denver. Denver, Denver is going to be right there. Denver is going to give Kansas City every single thing they can handle this year. Everything. They have a championship caliber defense, a championship caliber offensive line. It's going to be whether the quarterback can take another big jump. They've got backs, they've got wide receivers and they got a coaching staff. They're going to be for real.
Dan Patrick
In two weeks. I'll have you back and you give me your super bowl pick.
Jay Shetty
Deal. I'll give it to you.
Dan Patrick
Thank you, man. Have a good weekend. That's Lewis Riddick of the Mothership. We'll take a break. Our play of the day is up next.

What was the feeling like when you won your first Grand Slam at the US Open?
Dan Patrick
When I was growing up, I had dreams of playing, playing Serena in my first grand semifinal. It felt like a dream came true. I was just reading comments of people saying that I didn't deserve to win.

I don't know how to describe the the vibe in here. I don't know if morale is high. It's I don't know. It's in disarray. I think the song, the the tone was set last hour by Fritzi, where he took a shot at me and my love of the Beatles as he had a a parody song based off We Didn't Start the Fire by Billy Joel. And after that it just started to, I don't know, felt like we were turning on each other, the audience turning on each other. Thank you, Todd. I think there's also questions, at least for me, about the menu.
Jay Shetty
Is it gonna.
Dan Patrick
Is that something we're excited about?
Jay Shetty
Are we feeling feigning enthusiasm?
Dan Patrick
I'm not sure about today. I'm going to ask you what you think of Meat Friday's menu. I'm not loving this one, but I'm hoping I'll be pleasantly surprised. That's just my honest assessment of when.
Jay Shetty
I heard that's what we were having.
Dan Patrick
You can set it out if you want. I'll give it a shot. I'm not shy about consuming. We're having lamb burgers, chicken solve, lake skewers, souvenir and Greek salad. Who has it better than we do? Nobody. Nobody. Stat of the Day brought to you by Panini America, the official trading cards of the Dan Patrick Show. Good morning. If you're watching on Peacock, thank you for downloading the app and we say good morning to our radio affiliates around the country. I enjoyed the football last night. I was Happy for Trey Lance. 1320120 yards, couple of touchdown passes and the Chargers rough up the Lions 34 to 7. Trey Lance has two regular season games with multiple touchdown passes. Both came in his rookie season in 2021. This is the brought to you by Panini America. And in case you're wondering, did the outcome of last night change the super bowl odds this year? It didn't. Draft kings just sent me the super bowl odds. It's the Bills and the Ravens are tied at plus 600 Eagles plus 700 Chiefs plus 850 Lions plus 1100 Commanders plus 1800. And of course, the Commanders without Terry McLaurin as he continues his hold in and I mentioned this stat over the last five years, there are four players with at least 1,000 receiving yards each year. Justin Jefferson, Mike Evans, Devonte Adams and Terry McLaurin. The NFL does not pay you on what you did. They pay you on what they think you'll do. And I think if he was 28 years of age, this would not be an issue. But you get to that number 30 years of age. Well, 30 is different now, 30 doesn't feel like 30. Like, oh, my God, you only got a couple more years left in your career. It feels like 30. All right. You got four or five more really good years. It feels like it's an excuse not to pay you. I don't know. You're on. You're on the other side of 30 here. Yeah. And that's happening with Trey Hendrickson in Cincinnati. You're 30. I don't know. Edge rusher over 30. Okay. Gave you 35 sacks over the last two years combined. But they're not paying you on what you did. It's what they think you'll do. And you still have the hold in there. Trey Hendrickson and of course, Micah Parsons. Seaton, what's the poll question for the final hour of this program? At least for the week, you. The final poll question of the week. Just the way.
Jay Shetty
That is a lot of pressure right there.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, we have a few of them up there right now. Two of them are Terry McLaurin related and the commanders. All right.
Jay Shetty
Commanders and Terry McLaurin.
Dan Patrick
Should they trade him or pay him? 64 of the audience have us paying him. And whose side are you on? Commanders or Terry McLaurin?
Jay Shetty
77% are on Terry's side.
Dan Patrick
Good. All right. Good.
Jay Shetty
That feels like a win for the players.
Dan Patrick
Yeah. Let's go. Unless the season starts and he's not there, and then you blame him because he's screwing up this dream season. Potential dream season. Right.
Jay Shetty
There's plenty of time for that to change.
Dan Patrick
Yes, of course. Yes.
Jay Shetty
We also have up there in worse shape race car. Dylan's ankle or Todd. Right now, with 76% of that vote, it is Todd Fritz.
Dan Patrick
Wow. Ray's car is.
Jay Shetty
Only has 5%, so.
Dan Patrick
Yeah. Ray's getting a new tire from tire rack today. We're gonna. We got him set up. Dylan may have ligament damage with his ankle playing pickleball yesterday, but he is in. He's our chef. But it's. It's going to take a village for this meat Friday. All right, we'll get some phone calls in here. I brought this up, and I didn't do any research because we usually don't do research on this show. It's basically off memory. But have we had a division where you had four hall of Fame caliber coaches at the same time? And that's why I brought up the AFC west with Jim Harbaugh, Pete Carroll, you got Sean Payton and of course, Andy. Some other ones. 2001 AFC West, Mike Shanahan, Mike Holmgren, Dick Vermeil, Jon Gruden. Let's see. 1999 NFC West. Dan Reeves, Steve Mariucci, Mike Ditka, Dick for meal. Mariucci is not a Hall of Famer. Okay, okay. Some other people have some thoughts on this. Reed in Wisconsin. Hi, Reed. What's on your mind today?
Jay Shetty
Hey, what's up, DP? First time, long time.
Dan Patrick
5, 10, 180. And I think the 2005 NFCE. He should have Bill Parcell, Tom Coughlin, Joe Gibbs, and Andy Reid. Okay, well, thank you. Some people have sent in some pictures. Apparently, in the first hour, I had my hair. Some of it was sticking up. Somebody said it looked like Alfalfa from our gang. But now they're sending me pictures to show that my hair was apparently sticking up. Is that right, Todd? That is correct. Okay. I didn't. I didn't notice that. I would have said something, or maybe I wouldn't have.
Jay Shetty
The other guys would have told you something. So we can confirm at one point during the show, your hair was, in.
Dan Patrick
Fact, standing up and it's no longer doing that.
Jay Shetty
Good, Good. I'm glad.
Dan Patrick
Is it good?
Jay Shetty
We got to the bottom of that?
Dan Patrick
Yeah. Or the top of that. Thank you. I think you're good. Thank you. Todd, are you enjoying this a little bit? Okay. Not a lot, but a little. Yes. Yes.
Jay Shetty
Paul, When Todd's hair sticks up, you should tell him.
Dan Patrick
Wow, that would be like a.
Jay Shetty
Just to keep it even.
Dan Patrick
That would be a Guinness Book historic thing. When's the last time your hair stood up?
Jay Shetty
When did the Broncos win that second.
Dan Patrick
Super bowl against the Falcons? You had hair back then. I think I had some back then. Okay. But then I still don't know why Celebrity Family Feud in the promotional picture has you with hair.
Jay Shetty
That was weird.
Dan Patrick
That was very weird. And we've asked for answers. The I team was on this, and we don't have anybody who's going to give us a response of why they put hair on you. And for the actual show. It's not like they put something over it to make it look like I had hair.
Jay Shetty
So it was odd.
Dan Patrick
Yeah. I don't know if this was, you know, for ratings. Hey, look at him with hair like. You look better. Yes, Paulie.
Jay Shetty
It was a social media post promoting Celebrity Family Feud, and they had us and the Eisen show, and there was no joke. There was no like bit. It was just out there. And Fritzi had, like, two thirds of a head of hair, and we got no response.
Dan Patrick
Well, they didn't do that to Rich Eisen. They did Not. No. Don't know why they gave you hair. I thought it was initially just someone having fun, like a, you know, a fan of the show. That.
Jay Shetty
That would be cute to do that.
Dan Patrick
But it actually came from the show.
Jay Shetty
As some kind of weird promo image.
Dan Patrick
Paulie has some Trey Lance questions. He looked good last night. He looked comfortable last night, I should say. Granted, it's. It's the first preseason game, but I'm just looking for anything from this kid. And he's only 25 years of age, but it feels like the NFL's moving on from him, that he's the third string quarterback. I think with the Chargers. I don't think Justin Herbert is hearing footsteps or looking over his shoulder. Even Taylor Heinecke is a better quarterback than Trey Lance. Yes. Paul, two part question.
Jay Shetty
Is Trey Lance a bust or is it to be decided?
Dan Patrick
I'm gonna say to be decided because he's only 25 years of it. You're being kind. I am being kind. I don't know if somebody's going to give him a chance to be a starter again.
Jay Shetty
Could you make the case that he was a bust with San Francisco but his career to be decided?
Dan Patrick
Yes.
Jay Shetty
Can you unbust yourself in professional sports? Has anyone ever been a bust declared and unbusted?
Dan Patrick
I have a name, but was Baker Mayfield a bust? No. He had some nice years. Yeah, but then he's on the practice squad. I think for Carolina he couldn't be the backup quarterback. I think with the Rams he was in danger of becoming a journeyman.
Jay Shetty
And he did a cleanup on aisle five.
Dan Patrick
He was close to being a Buzz.
Jay Shetty
But he had too many above average years with Cleveland. He kind of paid off for Cleveland early. Here's the guy.
Dan Patrick
Okay.
Jay Shetty
Alex Smith was drafted number one by San Francisco, ironically in 2005. His first year, one touchdown, 11 picks.
Dan Patrick
His second year, improvement, 16 touchdowns, 16 picks. His third year, injured a lot.
Jay Shetty
Two touchdowns, four picks.
Dan Patrick
He didn't play.
Jay Shetty
His fourth year, he's completely injured with a shoulder injury. He played a few more years in San Francisco, but at that point you could find articles in 08, Alex Smith is a bust. A lot of them like it's not working out. He cleaned up his act. He had four decent years with San Francisco.
Dan Patrick
Then when he goes to Kansas City.
Jay Shetty
He goes to three Pro Bowls.
Dan Patrick
But it felt like wherever he went, they brought in somebody else who would take his place. You know, brought in Kaepernick and Mahomes. They went to Washington and had the terrible injury. Yes, Marvin, I think another Guy who.
Jay Shetty
May have unbusted himself.
Dan Patrick
Sam Darnold. Yeah, yeah, that's a good point. Yeah, that's a good point. See, Zach Wilson still has a chance, I guess, to unbust himself. New term, by the way, we came up unbust himself, Bob in New York. Good morning, Bob. What's on your mind today? Hello? Hello? I'm here, but I can't. I don't think you hit the button yet. I'm here, Bob. I can't hear myself.
Jay Shetty
That's kind of the way it works, Bob.
Dan Patrick
I don't know that you would hear yourself back, bud. Connor in Boise. Hello? Hello? Hello?
Jay Shetty
Hello? I can't hear myself.
Dan Patrick
Dan?
Jay Shetty
Dan, you there? You there?
Dan Patrick
Connor? Yes, sir. Thanks for having me. Call in, D.P. i'm calling about the hall of Fame coach issue, and I think Pete Carroll's this will be his second time around.
Jay Shetty
In the 97 AFC East.
Dan Patrick
When Carroll coached the Patriots, Jimmy Johnson.
Jay Shetty
Coached the Dolphins, Marv Levy coached the.
Dan Patrick
Bills, and Bill Parcells was on the Jets. Yeah, yeah, that was brought up by another caller, but thank you, Connor. Uh, Pete Carroll was not a Hall of Fame coach at the time. These are all hall of Fame caliber coaches in the AFC West. This isn't they. They're starting out their careers. They've already become hall of Fame worthy coaches. Chad in Texas, did you give me the other Trey Lance question? Paulie, that was it. The follow up was can he unbust himself? Okay. All right. Yes. Chad, what's on your mind today? Good morning, Dan. Thanks for taking my call. Six foot, 205, dad bod. Hey, I'm headed up to here area this weekend. I was just trying to get some recommendations. My wife's in the wedding there in New Haven, so I was trying to find out if you had any recommendations for us. All right. Food wise? Yes, sir. All right. There's a sneaky Italian place called Zanelli's.
Jay Shetty
Zanelli's.
Dan Patrick
And it's. It's right in the area where you have two of the most famous pizzerias in the country are on the same street. But Zanelli's, they have more than just pizza. Wonderful people, there's outdoor seating, and they're right across the street, I think from Sally's.
Jay Shetty
Yeah, just down the road. I mean, right down the street.
Dan Patrick
Yeah. But Zanelli's, that's on Worcester street in New Haven. So if you're going for pizza, you can get great pizza there. But they have some other things as well. So I would say Zanelli's the other places are going to have long lines. Just letting you know if you're going there for a weekend. There'll be long lines, but hopefully you'll get good weather. Looks like good weather for you traveling. Chad, thanks for the phone call. Let me see Rob in Utah. Hi, Rob. What's on your mind today? Hey, Dan. How's it going? Great. I'm 65305. I had a trade idea for you because Terry McLaurin wants to be traded. Tyreek Hill also, at the beginning of the postseason, said he wanted to be traded. So swap them in Miami also send a third rounder to D.C. well, okay. The only problem with that is, is Tyreek Hill going to want to renegotiate his contract? He doesn't seem. I don't know. He doesn't seem happy, and I wouldn't want Tyreek Hill. He's unbelievable at times, unstoppable. I just think it's all about him. Terry McLaurin, by all accounts, has been a great leader for the commanders. And it hasn't been a easy task being a leader with the commanders. I hope he gets paid. I hope he ends his career there. I think he's one of those players that unless you watch the Commanders, you really don't know about Terry McLaurin because his numbers don't jump off the charts as far as combine numbers. Like, oh, my God, that guy's so fast. He just is a football player. You throw the ball up in his. His direction, he's going to bring it down. He was number one in contested catches the last five years. He's going to give you a thousand yards. I think he had 13 touchdown receptions. He is, you know, a big reason why you had Jaden Daniels have the season that he had. It's like Steve Smith with Cam Newton. When Cam first came in, Steve Smith was unbelievable. Sometimes we just focus on the quarterback, and I hope that. I hope that they get this deal done. Trip in Vegas. Hi, Trip. What's on your mind? Hey, D.P. thanks for calling me back. I look forward to seeing you all again. For F1, I had, as a Crappensburg State alumni, I have two players that we couldn't get through nil, but I have their nicknames. One was Cooper Fly. He would have been the Cooper scooper. And then if Travis Hunter went here, he would have been the double flusher. Well, thank you, Tripp. Still. Still leaning on Crappensburg State. Humor, the gift that keeps on giving.

1. Meat Friday Mayhem Timestamp: 02:05 - 04:10
The episode kicks off with Dan Patrick and Jay Shetty delving into the chaos surrounding their traditional "Meat Friday." Dan humorously recounts the predicament of their chef, Dylan, who recently injured his ankle playing pickleball due to not wearing Tyro pickleball shoes. This mishap leaves the team scrambling to prepare the Friday meal without Dylan's expertise.
Dan Patrick (02:26): "We had an incident yesterday with PA Ray. He had a flat tire... Dylan got a banged up ankle."
Jay contributes by mentioning the friction that arises when Tyler, who previously lost his job to Dylan, steps in to help in the kitchen.
Jay Shetty (00:46): "Should you? That's what the real question is. Stand without good access is not a good stand."
Despite the initial tension, the team remains optimistic about salvaging Meat Friday, with Tyler and cameraman Weeks stepping up to assist.
2. NFL Spotlight: Terry McLaurin’s Trade Request Timestamp: 24:36 - 30:47
A significant portion of the discussion centers on Washington Commanders' star wide receiver Terry McLaurin's recent request for a trade. Dan and Jay engage in an in-depth analysis of the implications this has for both McLaurin and the Commanders.
Dan Patrick (27:26): "The NFL does not pay you on what you did. They pay you on what they think you'll do."
They explore the challenges of negotiating McLaurin's contract, weighing his past performance against future potential. The conversation highlights the delicate balance teams must maintain between honoring a player's contributions and managing financial constraints.
Jay Shetty (25:40): "Contracts are about future performance, projection."
Louis Riddick of the Mothership joins the conversation, emphasizing the importance of McLaurin's role in the Commanders' offense and debating whether the team should prioritize trading him or meeting his salary demands.
Louis Riddick (30:47): "He's going to give you a thousand yards. He is a big reason why you had Jaden Daniels have the season that he had."
The segment concludes with a poll revealing that 77% of listeners support McLaurin, signaling strong fan backing for the player amidst the trade rumors.
3. Quarterback Development: The Trey Lance Conundrum Timestamp: 32:04 - 36:12
The discussion shifts to the broader theme of quarterback development in the NFL, with a particular focus on Trey Lance of the San Francisco Chargers. Jay praises Lance's recent performance, noting his comfort and execution on the field.
Jay Shetty (32:08): "It's about execution for Trey. It's about the comfort level for Trey. It's about the timing that he played with, the accuracy that he played with..."
However, Dan expresses skepticism about the league's patience with developing quarterbacks, drawing parallels to other young QBs like Zach Wilson and Anthony Richardson.
Dan Patrick (34:11): "I don't think we're patient at all. I think we're less patient because it used to be you could be a number one pick and sit for a couple of years."
The conversation underscores the pressure young quarterbacks face to perform immediately, often without sufficient time to develop fully.
4. Lighthearted Banter and Audience Interaction Timestamp: 52:05 - End
Throughout the episode, Dan and Jay maintain a lighthearted rapport, engaging in humorous exchanges about Dan’s hair appearing unusually upright in a promotional photo.
Dan Patrick (54:32): "Somebody said it looked like Alfalfa from our gang."
They also interact with callers, addressing topics ranging from division rankings of Hall of Fame coaches to humorous anecdotes about the team's "Meat Friday" menu choices.
Jay Shetty (52:00): "That feels like a win for the players."
Additionally, listener poll results are shared live, revealing audience opinions on current sports topics, such as the preference between Terry McLaurin and other players, as well as humorous votes on who is in worse shape within the team.
