You are listening to the Dan Patrick show on Fox Sports Radio. Our good buddy Seth Greenberg from the Mothership. How did we get there with this big 12 floor and why are we just realizing that the players aren't comfortable on it?
Seth Greenberg
Brett Yormak is honestly thinking outside the box, thinking Commissioner. I mean think about Brett Yormack is so far outside the box. The PAC12 no longer exists. That's how he thinks big picture. He thinks marketing, he thinks branding, he thinks creating an image for his organization. The floor had been used before, but the players are not used to that floor. Obviously this surface was slippery. To play the biggest games in those kids careers in terms of trying to play their way to the NCA tournament and win a championship probably wasn't the greatest decision. But I also give them a lot of credit to have the agility to say, you know what? This isn't working. This isn't the welfare of our players, our organization, our league. It's not a good look. And to be able to pivot and show the agility to move on and go back to the Wood court, a court that players are used to playing on, which I think that's the biggest thing. You play your whole. It's like, it's like changing the ball. You can't change the ball each and every year. You know, you gotta, you get, you get used to a ball that you're playing with during the course of the season. So I give them a lot of credit for the ingenuity of trying it. I also give them a lot of credit for the agility to say, you know what? This isn't working for us. We need to change.
Dan Patrick (Host)
And I know it's the future. We've seen a lot of these universities where they bring out their own court, but I think illuminating and what somebody with the NBA said, it's going to resemble a pinball machine. Those were the words. And that was back during COVID We haven't seen that yet but I do think that's on the horizon. Let me give you the full introduction. Seth Greenberg on ESPN all weekend long college game day, Big 12 championship, then college basketball live Sunday at noon ahead of the SEC championship. Sports center bracketology Sunday night from Nashville after the brackets are revealed. Miami, Ohio losing yesterday means what Seth?
Seth Greenberg
They're in a playing game, they're in the NC by term. You know, it is really hard to do what they did. Only three other schools ever done it. Kentucky, Wichita State, now them. And if you go further back, you know, you talk about the old St. Joe's team that lost in the first round of that team was ended up a number one seed. But it's hard to do what they were able to do. Their resume says they're not one of the 37 best teams but their accomplishment says they are. And to do what they were able to do in a conference, as you know Dan, and such a level playing field The Mac. I mean, like, same budgets. Everyone's in a bus. Every game's a grind. The Arenas have great ownership. I think you've got to reward the accomplishment. I'm not saying their resume says it, but I think that they deserve an opportunity. And I think they're playing the playing
Dan Patrick (Host)
game, but they're going to give them a playing game that will be a home game for them. It's going to be in Dayton.
Dan Patrick
Yeah.
Dan Patrick (Host)
It's not very far. Direct. Yeah, not very far. Drive from Oxford, Ohio. What do you make of Bruce Pearl's criticisms?
Seth Greenberg
Yeah, he's kind of walked that back a little bit. You know, Bruce, I love him to death, but we also know he has a little bit of an agenda. I mean, his son is right on that bubble. He wants to see his son get in the NC Tournament. There's been a lot of focus on their struggles. Bruce Pearl kind of. And I love him to death, and he's a dear friend, but he kind of screwed his own son because when he left and then the schedule he left with and a totally new roster, and they weren't going to be last few years arbor teams. You don't lose Jennai Broom. You don't lose the players that they let lost and then all of a sudden hand it to your son and say, all right, hey, go ahead, go out and win 20 games. Go. Go to the Sweet 16. Go to the Elite Eight. You know, he had no chance to really win. Steven's going to be a good coach. He really is. He's passionate. He cares about it. They've got to recruit some guys, but he was dealt a difficult hand. Bruce, on the other hand, he's got to stay out of the way. And I'm talking about a friend. Like yesterday, his whole thing on the sidelines, you know, he's screaming at someone, stay out of the way. You're not the story. Auburn's the story. Your son's the story. Support your son by helping him recruit at the appropriate time. But you cannot be front and center and become the story. The story's got. Got to be Auburn's team, and the guy that's coaching them now just happens to be your son.
Dan Patrick (Host)
Yeah, I was disappointed watching Bruce. I mean, you know, this goes back to parents ruin sports because they get so involved, so vocal. You know, he should just be sitting there quietly, maybe the way John Wooden used to when he retired as UCLA's basketball coach. He just sat there and watched the game. How many heavyweights do we have? Is college basketball top heavy in this year's tournament.
Seth Greenberg
Yeah, I think there are about seven teams, seven or eight teams that can win it all. I mean look, pay for play or nil or whatever you want to call it, Rev share, it's and the transfer portal together. Look, it's been combustible. It's really hurting the mid majors. It's just the way, the way it is. It's the cost of doing business. So like the bubble. People say the bubble stinks. The bubble doesn't stink because there's parity within the bubble. So the high majors, more good players are spread out through the landscape of college basketball. So they're more good teams and then there are a few great teams. But what it's done is pilfered all the really good players from the mid majors. Not all of them, but most of them. So we've got a log jam of these teams that are beating each other up in league and ACC, the SEC, the Big 12, the Big Ten. Then you've got a couple that have separated themselves. Michigan separated themselves. Duke until the injury the other day, separate themselves. Florida has separated themselves. So you know, you've got those. Arizona separate themselves. Then you've got the next year that are very good because they've retained the right players and fill them with voids. And then you've got a lot of teams that are just, you know, they're good enough to beat anyone, but they're bad enough to lose to anyone. And that's what we've, what we've come to. It's kind of, I don't know Dan, is, is it a lot like the NFL where they wanted parity, then they got more parody and all of a sudden you complain about parody.
Dan Patrick (Host)
I'm wondering about these budgets. Jim Boeheim was saying, you know, Syracuse, you know, it's, it's no surprise. The top teams in the acc, they spent the most money and Syracuse and some of these other schools did not. What is the budget for a great or good, good major college team? We know what it is in, in college football they're approaching $40 million. Are we at 20 million for the top end schools in basketball?
Seth Greenberg
Last year it was around 12. Now Kentucky spent 22, but last year it was around 12. But if you think about three years ago it was 4 billion,
Dan Patrick
right?
Seth Greenberg
Three years later it's 12. It seems like it's doubling. Now you say, well how is that possible? The total amount of rev share money is 20.5 million. Right? I think that's the number. Allegedly people are supposed to be working on. Look, there's no guardrails, there's no rules. Everyone's going to find a way to circumvent these things. They're going to find collectives, they're going to find real nil deals within their communities that they can justify. That's just the way it is. Eventually the power fives are going to break off. We're still going to have the NCAA tournament, but it's going to be even more of the haves and have nots. I think like the 16 bottom Division 1 schools will be the opening round. That's my thing. And they'll play their way into the main bracket. So you'll get the, the one big leagues in the field. But if you're an athletic department and you're spending these millions and millions and millions of dollars, you know, here's the deal. You want to return on the investment and that's playing in the NCAA tournament, that's playing in the. The college football players. You can't spend all that money and not get a return. Then all of a sudden, you know, there's donor fatigue. I mean that's just the way it is. There's donor fatigue. It is real. And like it's great that there are a few programs that have these monster boosters but not everyone has them. So eventually I think they're going to be break off and we're going to semi more, more than we're doing now. Professionalize college athletics.
Dan Patrick (Host)
Your favorite NBA prospect in the tournament is who
Seth Greenberg
the upside is Darren Peterson. In real life it's a cover or DeBancer and Caleb Wilson would have been in that conversation until he broke his hand. But Acoff is really. Derek takeoff is really good. He plays at his own pace. Reminds me of Damian Lillard. Divans, reminds me Tracy McGrady. Those guys are just different. Like the one thing I like about those two guys, they're everyday guys. They're everyday just. And I'm not saying Peterson isn't like. Peterson's struggling now fitting in with his team because he hasn't been with his team. The guys are ridiculous talent because as you know, the one thing you got to do in the NBA is what make shots. That dude can make shots.
Dan Patrick (Host)
Yeah, I've watched him. But I, I mean there's buyer beware because I don't know if he loves playing Debancer is every night that dude brings it. As you said, he loves ball. Yes. And that's what I want. I want somebody. You know, some guys are really good, but that doesn't mean that they really love playing. They're just really good at it. And that's the thing with Peterson and Bill Self. I'm still trying to figure out, and maybe he's still trying to figure out, you know, where are we going with this? I've only got a couple more games with this kid anyway. But I'd. I'd just be nervous that I just don't know if he's somebody who is a gym rat who really wants to be great. He might just be a really talented player.
Seth Greenberg
Yeah, yeah. Look, he is really talented, and time will tell. I mean, it's the first time he's ever dealt with injuries, but he is really talented. Dude makes buckets. And I'm interested to see because I think if he's really engaged and he figures out when to be selectively aggressive, but they play with him, not to him. And through him, I really believe Kansas can make a run. We'll see.
Dan Patrick (Host)
Yeah, I like that, you know, playing through him or to him because sometimes you acquiesce to a star instead of. He needs to blend into what you're doing. It feels like when he's in there, Bill Self is going out to. How do we, you know, make you happy? How do we bring, you know, you into our system, or do we have to play your kind of system? Do you have any problems with the 83 points that Bam out of Bio scored and how he scored?
Seth Greenberg
Look, it's. It's not what Kobe did, but it's an incredible accomplishment and I like it for Bam and I got to run right after this, but I like it for Bam for this reason. Bam is an everyday dude. Like, Bam's a guy. Bam's a guy that you can just count on. He's a blue collar, grinded out, compete every day all about the team, works his rear end off, plays as hard as anyone. To me, I'm. I'm good with Bam because I know what he stands for. And I'm like, his growth as a player has been incredible and, and I'm happy for the dude.
Dan Patrick (Host)
I know you got to run. We'll talk to you next week. Thank you.

Bam Adebayo joining us on the program. Bam, thanks for joining us. What part of your body hurt the Most after the 83 point game?
Seth Greenberg
Oh,
Bam Adebayo
the arms for sure.
Dan Patrick
Just the shoulder from shooting.
Commercial Announcer
Yes.
Dan Patrick (Host)
You got to ice down the shoulder like a pitcher does after, you know, throwing seven innings.
Bam Adebayo
Yeah, I had to get in the ice bath. And really,
Dan Patrick (Host)
what did you think pre game? Did you think anything pregame differently than any other game you've had in your career?
Bam Adebayo
I knew we needed to win that game because we've, we've been in this playing situation for the last three, four years. And going into the game, you know, we got most of our starters out. Andrew Wiggins, Norman Powell, Tyler Hero, Khalil Ware. So it's only two starters in our bench mob, basically. And we know how those games can get because we're the Miami Heat. We've beaten the number one teams in both conferences, but we've also lost to both of the worst teams in both conferences. So you can see how that game can be tricky for us. And we just needed to win.
Dan Patrick (Host)
Why does it feel like people want you to apologize for scoring 83 points?
Bam Adebayo
Probably because I wasn't, I wasn't part of the agenda. You know, it wasn't, it shocked the world because it wasn't somebody who they glorify as a score, as somebody who can get that record. And I feel like that's what shook the world. And also, they're gonna say that I shot X amount of free throws.
Dan Patrick (Host)
But once you realized that they were going to foul you, that that became the offense, you're just like, they're gonna foul me. So I'm. I'm gonna take advantage of this.
Bam Adebayo
It wasn't even. They were gonna file me. It was more so like, I'm being aggressive. I'm trying to get. I'm trying to. I'm trying to score buckets. That's what I'm trying to do. I'm trying to get buckets. It's not. And they just kept following me. Like I said, there were no other of my starters out there, so it was just me.
Dan Patrick (Host)
When you got to 81, what were you thinking?
Bam Adebayo
I gotta make these next two free throws because if I miss him myself.
Dan Patrick (Host)
But no thought of Kobe, who was one of your idols. Did you ever think of stopping at 81?
Bam Adebayo
No, because I know if it was the other way around, Kobe would have been like, I'm shooting for whatever I can be. I. And to be in the conversation as your idol is what to me makes. Gives me one of those things where I'm appreciative of it because it's my idol. It's somebody who. I grew up watching the game. Like, I grew up watching him, like, understanding what he stood for. And that man was. He will tell you, I'm chasing Jordan. Whatever record he's trying to get, I'm trying to break it. And obviously, you know, I. I got the opportunity to do that.
Dan Patrick (Host)
And I think because people love Kobe so much, that bothered them more that who were you to do that to our Kobe? And here he is, your idol. And I just. And you're right. There's no way Kobe would say, hey, you got to 80 one stop. He'd be like, no, keep going. Go for 90 if you can. I mean, that was his mentality.
Bam Adebayo
Exactly. And like I said, if the dead could talk, I will. I firmly believe he'd be like, congratulations, young fellow. Like, you did some. I thought nobody could. Could even reach for the next 40, 50 years.
Dan Patrick (Host)
You remember the first time you met Kobe?
Bam Adebayo
Never met him. That is the other thing.
Dan Patrick (Host)
Never met him.
Bam Adebayo
Never met him. So that is. That is another reason why it's so special to me, because I never got to meet him. Like, the one time I thought I was gonna meet him was. It was my first all Star. I was like, if I make all star this year, I might get to meet Kobe. And then obviously, the. The tragedy happened. And I remember where I was. I remember just sitting there and just started crying because I was like. I was like, bro, like, you know, from. From a. From player standpoint, you know how we all appreciate that, man for what he's done for the game, for. For what he's done for people's mentality. To him, creating a mama mentality was like, keep pushing forward. So I was heartbroken because I was like, I really wanted to meet my idol at some point.
Dan Patrick (Host)
Talking to Bam Adebayo, fresh off 83 point performance. Well, I mean, last night, you only got 21. I mean, what happened?
Bam Adebayo
Trying to figure out how you can redo something like that. That's hard to. It's hard to keep up. And nobody talks about next game because it's funny, because when I go back and look at what he did afterwards, he also had the same type of game. Like, it was. Like, it wasn't 81.
Dan Patrick (Host)
Yeah, he had 30. How important was it to have your mom there, man?
Bam Adebayo
To have my mom there, to have my people there, to do it at home, in front of our home crowd. It's a moment none of us will ever forget. And to be there, to be in the building, to have my mom there, like I said, like, she's my pride and door. A lot of this I do for her and for her to, you know, see that her son put himself in history. I know she's full of joy, and that's something she'll always talk about.
Dan Patrick (Host)
What does your girlfriend do better than you on the basketball floor? Asia Wilson?
Bam Adebayo
Everything.
Seth Greenberg
Everything.
Bam Adebayo
You know, she can do literally anything. And also, having her in the building was special because she was mad because I got my 10,000 points while she was on her tour. And obviously to do that while she's sitting courtside was a special moment for us.
Dan Patrick (Host)
I think her career high is 53.
Bam Adebayo
That's a lot of buckets still.
Dan Patrick (Host)
But let's be honest. I think I could get. I think I get 10 points off the Wizards.
Bam Adebayo
Listen, like I said, everybody wants to be mad at me.
Dan Patrick (Host)
No, no.
Bam Adebayo
Be mad at their coach for. For not doubling me when I had 30 and a quarter.
Dan Patrick (Host)
You know, my. My problem with this, and I keep telling people in my audience, you had 60 after three quarters. Nobody was complaining about how you were playing or they were playing. Then all of a sudden it's like, oh, you know, he's embarrassing, or they're embarrassing the game. I said, what happened the first three quarters when you put up what 64 points. I mean, that's what people have to. You know, let's look at the entire game, not just the last five minutes, where it got a little silly or got out of hand. How do you respond?
Bam Adebayo
Also, and also, their coach started following my teammates, so I couldn't. I couldn't shoot free throws. So it wasn't like. It was just like, all the Miami Heat are just shitting the game away. That's not what it was. It was also them being like, in order for Bam not to get this record, we're just gonna file his other teammates when they touch the ball. That's unethical. Basketball to me is like, whatever y' all want to call it. But, yeah, people are gonna try to. What I did out there was special to me. And everybody who knows, like, how hard I work behind the scenes like, to see me put on that type of performance, to have 64¾ is insane. And the thing that people forget, like, they cut the lead to, like, 11 in the fourth quarter. So it wasn't like we were up 30 the whole quarter, where everybody's just saying, oh, they were up 30. No, they cut the lead to like 13 to 11 at one point in the fourth quarter. So I had to play. And because nobody watches us until that moment, we've had 20 point leads in the fourth quarter and lost the game. All right, what do y' all want us to do?
Dan Patrick (Host)
The uniform go to the hall of Fame?
Bam Adebayo
Not yet. It's on the way, though. It hasn't got there yet.
Dan Patrick (Host)
Wait, what are you. What are you waiting for?
Bam Adebayo
I mean, I got. I gotta ship it, Dan. I mean, what you want me to do? You still got the game play.
Dan Patrick (Host)
You can. That's not a big deal. You got people. You got people who have people who can do this for you. Don't give it back.
Bam Adebayo
You're right.
Dan Patrick (Host)
Right.
Bam Adebayo
It was just a special moment.
Dan Patrick (Host)
By the way, I have Kobe autograph jersey, and I have your autograph jersey.
Bam Adebayo
Really?
Dan Patrick (Host)
Yeah. Yep. Yep. Didn't even know yours. What? You didn't know if I knew who you were?
Dan Patrick
Yeah, man.
Bam Adebayo
You know,
Dan Patrick (Host)
Bam, I'm a baller.
Bam Adebayo
What's your career high then?
Dan Patrick (Host)
36.
Bam Adebayo
Listen, it's a lot of people. I credit that. It's a lot of people that's never scored 36 before.
Dan Patrick (Host)
But that was before the three point shot, so let's tack on 14 more. So probably a 50 burger.
Bam Adebayo
I respect it.
Dan Patrick (Host)
I'm kind of. I was kind of like Tyler hero before. Tyler hero.
Bam Adebayo
Oh, you were a bucket Getter, huh?
Dan Patrick (Host)
Yep. That's what I was. Yep. That's what the ladies called me. Bucket getter.
Bam Adebayo
Bucket getter.
Seth Greenberg
All right. Okay, then
Dan Patrick (Host)
don't leave me open. Bam. That's all I'm going to say. Do not leave me open. Problem is I couldn't get open. But if you did leave me open, I was going to make it. I'm not going to pass. I'm not playing defense. I'm just letting you know.
Bam Adebayo
Okay. Okay.
Dan Patrick (Host)
Just like Tyler. Yes. That's it. It's all I'm going to do. How mad is Tyler, hero that you got the record and you know, that seemed like he would be a guy who would be able to get 83. He's got to be upset.
Bam Adebayo
Honestly, man, I think all my teammates was happy for me because like I said, it's performances that we as the Miami he haven't seen. Like, as much as we want to talk about all the greats that's been there, like, it was something that, like, people weren't prepared for.
Dan Patrick (Host)
Yeah.
Bam Adebayo
And. And that's why I think a lot of, like I said, I think a lot of people are shocked by it because I wasn't the quote unquote anointed one where they was like, he can be the one to do it.
Dan Patrick (Host)
By the way, you play the Wizards April 4,
Bam Adebayo
I probably will get triple team when I touch the ball. That probably will happen.
Dan Patrick (Host)
You know what? You could get 50 against the Wizards the next time and it might be a subpar performance.
Commercial Announcer
Yeah.
Bam Adebayo
People are going to call me trash If I get 50,
Dan Patrick (Host)
man. Be proud. You have every right to be proud. And it was an incredible performance. And I don't care who you surpassed, you still put up 83. And you're right. Kobe probably say you go, man, you go. Don't stop at 83. But congrats.
Bam Adebayo
I appreciate that. Damn, man. Congrats on your 36 too. With no 3 point line.
Dan Patrick (Host)
36.
Bam Adebayo
3 point line is a lot of buckets.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, that's tough.
Dan Patrick (Host)
32 minute game. So I'm basically at more than a point a minute.
Bam Adebayo

Dan Patrick
Yeah, that's leftover makeup. Leftover makeup. And also I was home retired for a week and Julie said, no, no, you need to get a job one week. I mean, I made it a week.
Dan Patrick (Host)
We just had Bam out of bio on after scoring 83. Whoever make of that performance.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, I mean he's a really good player. Probably one of the, the not in the top 50 to ever score 83 points. But you know, you get things going. These are, these are all great players up there. And you know, I'm convinced that Jokic, you know, he gets 40 with 15 assists. I mean, if he wanted to score 80, I think he could, I think maybe Shea could. But you know, those guys, they, they do other stuff too. I mean, it's great to see that. Those performances are great to see. I remember watching kobe get the 83
Dan Patrick (Host)
and wow, is that housekeeping?
Dan Patrick
I forgot to do that disturb sign. And you know that kind of story a little bit. It's extra. It's a little extra for our show here. You know, we get an extra
Dan Patrick (Host)
about a 20 second timeout. You could tell her to come back.
Dan Patrick
They went away. They go away. They're good.
Dan Patrick (Host)
How much green light did Carmelo have?
Dan Patrick
You know, pretty much whenever he would not take bad shots. So he pretty much had it. Jerry McNamara pretty much had it. The guys that can really shoot, you want them to shoot, you want them to feel comfortable shooting. I think that's one thing Rick Pitino does is being the great coach he is. He gives his players the freedom to play offense. You want them to have that freedom. Not everybody can get that freedom, but the guys that should and usually the players on the team know that anyway. Except that. But yeah, Carmelo could shoot. When he, as long as he was on the court, he could shoot.
Bam Adebayo
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
Someplace.
Dan Patrick (Host)
Speaking of Jerry McNamara, you're going to campaign for him to take over at Syracuse.
Dan Patrick
Well, I'm not the athletic director. We have a new athletic director who I think is really good, and I think he'll make a good decision. I think it's a good job. I think there's good candidates. Jerry went from 4 and 28 program at Sienna to the NCAA tournament his second year with two of his best players out for the year. So, I mean, yeah, he's a candidate for any job in the country, but that's up to the athletic director. And I do have a little office there. It's not. It's kind of hidden someplace, kind of next to the closet. But, you know, I hope he'll get consideration. They'll come up with the best candidate. It doesn't have to be a Syracuse guy or non Syracuse guy. It has to be who's the best. Who's the best coach that can help us. And obviously Adrian, you know, did as good a job as he could. I mean, you have to have nil money. If you look at the ACC or any league in the country, the top four teams have the most nil money. That's in their good coaches, too, but they have nil money, and you have to get there. In this day and age, I don't think it'll change anytime soon, but that's the bottom line. Syracuse will get a really good basketball coach, I believe.
Dan Patrick (Host)
What kind of money do you need to compete at the top of the ACC?
Dan Patrick
10 million. 10 million. Basketball is. I mean, you could do it with eight or something. Maybe if you get lucky also, you could have 10 and not do it. There's programs that have 10 and don't do it. There's programs that HAVE spent 15 or 20 and are not doing well. I mean, you still got to coach. You still got to get the right players. Indiana is the greatest example, Indiana football, of, you know, a great coach, getting the right guys. Not all four stars, but, you know, good players and get them into a system. Vanderbilt basketball, same thing, did a great job this year. And it's. They got the money, they have a good coach. It's, it's. It can be done and it can. The good thing about you do it in one year and, you know, everybody criticizes the portal, and obviously there's a lot not to like about the portal in nil, but there's 40 Europeans over here who are really good players because of NIL. There's 40 seniors that are staying in college because of NIL. So you look at the product out there, it's good basketball. This is the Best basketball has been in a while really since the portal opened when it was all guys leaving early. Guys aren't leaving early anymore because they know they're not going to get the chance they'll be in the G league or something. So that's helped college basketball. It'd be better if we, we get to the point we have a salary cap, we have contracts and you know, all that stuff that's going to happen, you know, and you need some kind of cap. They have it in the pro leagues and we're a pro league. It's pro basketball, pro basketball, pro football. College is pro sports. I mean, I'm hearing soccer players, a volleyball player got $300,000 someplace. Who, where did we. You know, in the beginning we thought that that would be the total amount of money your whole team would get, maybe a couple hundred thousand. But obviously when you get boosters involved, they want to win. And the boosters with big money, it's, it's a drop in the bucket for some of them. So we are where we're at. But we got a great game as far as on the court. I mean, Florida State gave Duke everything they wanted last night. Probably could have won easily or not easily, but they could have won. And you know, we had a great game with North Carolina coming back and you know, I mean, we've had great games in the tournament. And I think that's a reflection of what's going to happen in the NCAA tournament. And by the way, Miami Ohio is got to be in the tournament. I mean, people that are talking about that are just crazy though. They wouldn't be at the top of a conference, but they could be in the mix in a conference. But that's not the point. They won 31 straight games. I saw them play eight times. I doubt if there's any coach or any pundit out there who saw Miami Ohio play eight times and they have a good team. Are they going to beat Florida?
Dan Patrick (Host)
No.
Dan Patrick
I mean they're not beaten for those days are over. That good mid major school is not going the final Four unless something just crazy happens. The teams at the top are just, they're just too good.
Dan Patrick (Host)
Talking to Jim Boeheim, of course, hall of Famer, and he's working with the ACC network. The role of a coach now compared
Dan Patrick
to 10 years ago, well, it's, it's completely different. You have to recruit the players and you have to figure out your salary structure, how much money you have for each player and who you can get, who you can't get. And Some of that's a guessing game. Agents will tell you this, my players worth a million dollars. He can get a million dollars over here. Well, he can't. I mean, but you don't know that, you know, so you have to kind of guess and plan. And then once you get your team, the good news is you have summers now to kind of get them ready so you can get a completely new group ready, you know, Ryan Odom, all new players, they're in the top 10, 15 in the country. Arizona mostly, all new play, not all, but mostly new. You look around Michigan, mostly all new. So, yeah, you can put a team together. And I laugh a little bit when fans sometimes say, well, I don't know the players, so I don't know if I like the. Well, if the players come in at whatever school and win, the fans will like the team. You know, Virginia's fans were all here. You know, why are they. They didn't know any of these guys last year. But they're winning in sports, Dan, as you know, in broadcasting, you win, you keep your job and you know, that's the bottom line. And fans will come to games if you win. But yeah, that's where we are in college basketball. And you know, but we need to get some structure. But a coach has to make sure he can do that. And then obviously he's got to put your team together and coaches can do that. I mean, it's. We used to have a couple veterans returning, but some years we only had one or two veterans and three or four new players. I got lucky and won a national championship with two freshmen being the two best players on the team. Now, freshmen can't. Except for that rare 10. This is an unbelievable freshman class. But a normal freshman class, there's probably five or six guys that can really help right away. The rest are not ready to go against seniors. So transfer portal seniors. But this freshman classes, I haven't. I don't rate them that much. I don't study. But it's got to be as good as any I can remember in terms of talent. I mean, it's incredible.
Dan Patrick (Host)
Class, you still in favor of expanding the tournament? The 96 teams?
Dan Patrick
I'll just explain this one more time. It doesn't have to be 96, but we can go to another two sites like Dayton, go to two more sites and you get done the same time frame and you can have the teams playing closer to home. And you have to remember there's two things that are important. Number one, we don't have the best 68 teams in the field.
Dan Patrick (Host)
All right?
Dan Patrick
We have automatic qualifiers who are not in the best 68 in the country. So you're leaving out teams in the top 50 or so in the country with the system we have now, I'm not saying those teams shouldn't be in. They should. Let's. Let's let them go. They're not going to win anymore, but let them in. But you add 6, 8, 10, whatever number it is, you make 10 or 12 fan bases happy. You make 12 players happy. And you make coaches secure in their job if they're in the NCAA tournament, whether it's expanded or not. And unless you're at, you know, a couple places. But you're. You're in the tournament and what have you lost? After one week, you have a better field than you had before because the weaker teams are all going to be out, the better teams are going to be in. And you haven't diluted the tournament. You've made the tournament better because you have better teams in the tournament and more players and more fans and more coaches are in the tournament. What's to not like about that? Hey, I remember John Wooden is a great coach, a great man. He wanted the tournament to stay at 24, and he knew what he was doing, right? But they went to 48. Tournament got better, right? The tournament went 64. Tournament got better, right? Tournament's at 68. Tournament's still getting better. It's not going to get worse. And you're going to add teams, players who are good. I mean, we got in one year, we were the last team in. We could have been the first team out easily. We went to the Final Four. So there are teams that are going to get left out, that could get going. I mean, Florida State's not going to get in the tour. They don't deserve it. But if they played a little better earlier, they can beat it. Their coach said it. We can beat anybody in the country. I think he's right. They're really playing good. But that's my feelings. I don't think. If you really think it through, you can argue that the people that say, oh, we can't expand it, they say, well, it's going to dilute the tournament. No, it isn't. They say, well, you know, bad teams will get it. No, they won't. They'll be good. They won't be great, but they'll be good. And the best teams are still going to win at the end. And I think you have another Dayton weekend, you know, during the week, someplace you can watch tv. There is no reason not to have it. And I know almost 60, 70% of the media is against expanding it. Well, if it was still at 24, most of those guys wouldn't have a job.
Dan Patrick (Host)
It's rare when you have make a good point, but you did. You made a very good point there.
Dan Patrick
I haven't made a good point at home in years, so I'm glad to make money here.
Dan Patrick (Host)
Before I let you go, why isn't Sonny Vaccaro in the Basketball hall of Fame as a contributor to the game?
Dan Patrick
You know, he's an unbelievable contributor to the game, but it's, it's not, he's not getting the hall of Fame. It's just there's too much around him. I, I, he's a good guy, good man. I know him very well. I was making no money at Syracuse, and Nike gave me money. Free shoes for all the players, as many as they wanted. We were paying for shoes, free uniforms, free gear, free bags. They gave us all that. And it helped us, it helped all of us. And one of the reasons I stayed at Syracuse so long is because of Nike and what they did for me personally. I didn't have to get as much from the school, but he, he got that going. It was him. The movie is pretty good. He, he did it. He got all these schools, all these coaches, free stuff, money, all that stuff that the schools didn't have to provide. I mean, there's, it's a win, win. I remember, I remember somebody asked me once, don't you feel bad, you know, taking money tonight? No. My players love Nike. Now, if the players didn't like the sneakers, that would have been a problem, but they all liked it. They all wanted to wear Nikes, and we got, they got 10 pairs. I paid for my second pair of shoes when I played a surgeon, I paid for it. Well, I did. My father did. You know, that's what we got, one pair of shoes for the year, and, you know, that was it. Now the players get all this stuff, and who's to, who wants to argue about that? I mean, I sent Phil n a ring, national championship ring. To be honest with you, I'm, I'm proud to say it. He, he allowed me to stay at Syracuse. So, yeah, I mean it, Sonny Piquero did a lot of that. I mean, it was him. He, Phil Knight let it happen and backed it, but Sonny Vaccaro did that, and he was great with youth basketball, getting kids seen the Nike camp, All American camp. That's where you Saw these players and you got to recruit nationwide because you didn't have to go to California to see a kid. You go to wherever Sonny was having his camp. We saw Stevie Thompson there. We saw the Ron Ellis. We saw all these guys. So we never recruited those guys. It wasn't for Sonny Vaccaro and his camp. All the best players in the country with. I mean, I saw LeBron James play against Carmelo and all this. These guys in one place on one plane ticket. Instead of going to 30 different places to see the 30 players I needed to see, I could see him all in one, one weekend. And so, I mean, he. He did a lot for the game. I personally think he's a really, really great person who has been great for players and coaches. And there's really no negative with Sonny for me that I've ever seen. And he. He's had a huge influence on the game of basketball. It's hard to get in the hall of Fame. There's so many constituencies that make up to get seven, eight guys. College. I know, I know high school coaches that should be in, you know, Gary. Gary McKnight in Modern Day. I mean, there's a number of high school coaches. Herman Harida played for me is one about five state championships in Baltimore. I mean, there's a lot of, you know, there's so many people that have to get in the hall of Fame. And Jerry Colangelo's done a great job keeping the hall of Fame going. We're. We're fortunate to have him. And I'm fortunate because he got me three gold medals in the Olympics along with Mike Krzyzewski, which was. There's no experience like coaching your national team to an Olympic gold medal. Standing there and hearing the national anthem. There is nothing like that. Standing next to Kobe Bryant and LeBron and Dwyane Wade and Carmelo and all those guys. That's a feeling you can't get in life normally.
Dan Patrick (Host)

[18:33–32:43]
[36:16–53:41]
Seth Greenberg [About Big 12’s court move, 03:06]:
“I give them a lot of credit for the ingenuity of trying it. I also give them a lot of credit for the agility to say, ‘you know what? This isn't working for us. We need to change.’”
Dan Patrick [On basketball budgets, 08:49]:
“Are we at $20 million for the top end schools in basketball?”
Bam Adebayo [On critics, 20:04]:
“It shocked the world because it wasn't somebody who they glorify as a scorer... I’m just trying to get buckets.”
Dan Patrick [On Bam’s 83-point game, 31:41]:
“Be proud. You have every right to be proud. And it was an incredible performance. And I don't care who you surpassed, you still put up 83. And you’re right. Kobe probably would say, ‘You go, man, don’t stop at 83.’”
Jim Boeheim [On NIL, 40:38]:
“There’s 40 seniors that are staying in college because of NIL... The product out there, it’s good basketball. This is the Best basketball has been in a while.”
The tone of this episode is classic Dan Patrick: conversational, candid, and often playful, while also delivering sharp analysis and providing behind-the-scenes perspectives from guest insiders. Greenberg provides straight-shooter assessments, Bam Adebayo balances humility with pride over his achievement, and Boeheim mixes institutional knowledge with self-deprecating wit.
