You are listening to the Dan Patrick show on Fox Sports Radio. It's hour one on this Wednesday. Dan and the Dan. Dan Patrick Show. Our starting lineup, our Fab 5, Flab 5. Wait a second. Not for long. Yeah, everybody's going to get in shape for the jacked off contest that we're going to have. Is there a deadline for this? What's the time frame? Is this starting now? And then is this maybe when we get to Notre Dame, usc or we go to Las Vegas? I think we're pushing the finish line to Las Vegas. Okay. That would be in November. That would be November. Yeah. There's a Formula one race and I thought, you know what, let me get outside my comfort zone here a little bit. Not going to Vegas, but going to Vegas and having Formula one. And I thought, you know what, let's be part of the beautiful people and maybe let's try to do that. Got friends at Fountain Blue. They took care of us at the Super Bowl. And I thought, you know what? Maybe we go out there, maybe we go out to formula one. Maybe we get dressed up.
Todd Fritz
Yes, Paulie, that was my concern. Do we have F1 clothing in our wardrobes? They dress pretty smooth over there.
Paul Pabst
Yeah, we need one of those, like, Jesse Palmer collarless leather jackets. I feel like it just has, like, the snap over here. He can wear that? Well. Yes, he can. Yeah. Marvin, I think can do style. You start from the ground up. That's where fashion starts. Always from the ground up. You always have a great shoe collection. I'm ready for Vegas. Okay. All right, so I think that's November, and then October is Notre Dame, usc. But in the meantime, I don't know how we're going to gauge who's in better shape or who lost weight or body fat, whatever it is. All of a sudden we decided that everybody is going to get in shape. Is that right? Yeah.
Todd Fritz
Paulie, the question over here is, looking at us, is three months enough time to get jacked? Because that's about what it is till three months. Three months, two weeks.
Paul Pabst
Well, I think you and Seton have a head start because you guys have been already pretty jacked. Yes, of course. Yes. You guys have been pretty regimented. Cutting down on alcohol. I don't know if you're watching what you're eating, but you cut down on alcohol. Marvin has been working out. Todd says he takes a walk every day. I've been watching Marvin work out. Doing a very good job. All right, well, world, I. I'm not sure how we measure this. That's the only thing of who would be the winner of the jacked off contest here? Who is jacked? Yes, Marvin, do we take before and after photos? No.
Dan Patrick
No.
Todd Fritz
Like naked look like Tom Brady at the combine.
Paul Pabst
Yeah, Combine photos in our underwear. Yes. All right.
Todd Fritz
Can we get a month to get ready for the pre photo? Because not looking good.
Paul Pabst
Yeah. And then we'll get a sponsorship. We'll get it. You know, somebody to M drive will sponsor this. We'll bring them back. Yeah, we'll get some kind of fitness, you know, health club that's going to get involved in this. And that's Marvin. Put the M and M drive. Come on now. Come on. Our drive. Marvin, put the M in. Alrighty. Welcome to the program. Yeah. Yes. Yes. Marvin, M drive on the way to F1. Okay. F1. M drive. Okay. All righty. Oh, Dan, give us Pandora. If we go to Vegas Pandora, who's outside arena, has to come in and sing stat of the day. Has to, right? Has to. Yes. I'm gonna get a. Maybe a piano. And then she'll be lying across the top like, what was that? The Fabulous Baker Boys with Michelle Pfeiffer. Michelle Pfeiffer. The day of the day. Oh, damn. Give us the stat of the. Yeah. Bring it home, dad of the day, brought to you by Panini America. The official trading cards of the Dan Patrick Show. First hour, brought to you by Mako. Most cars on the road could use a little tlc. Mako brings your car back to life. Affordable paint jobs, light collision repairs. Get a free estimate today. Oh, better get Mako. Play of the day poll question, Stat of the day. All of that forthcoming. Good morning. If you're watching on Peacock, thank you for downloading the app. And good morning to our radio affiliates around the country. Yes, Seton, there's almost a Sweeney Sisters quality to that song by Pandora. Do you remember the Sweeney Sisters? I do not. It was a Saturday Night Live bit with, like, James Curtin and somebody else, and they were like, like lounge singers at the Poconos or something like that, you know, and there's a very famous Sweeney Sisters bit where Paul Simon is sitting in the crowd and they start singing all of these Simon and Garfunkel songs. Yeah. And it is hilarious. Pandora's got some of those Sweeney Sisters qualities. Yes. Jan Hooks and Nora Dunn. Oh, that's who it was. That very silly, awesome lounge act. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Okay. Welcome to the program already in progress, by the way. And you know, we were wondering, what is the lead story today? You do have training camp. Ian Rapaport of NFL Network will join us. Coming up, Trey Hendrickson back with the Bengals, but still unsigned. Baseball trade deadline tomorrow. Ohtani is going to be pitching tonight. And then we thought, well, you know, the real lead is probably Liam Neeson and Pam Anderson are dating because they're starting in the remake of Naked Gun. Or is it a. I don't know. Is. Is it a remake of Naked Gun or is it just an addition to the original Naked Gun? When was the last Naked Gun with Leslie Nielsen? And we. We've seen these separations here with Top Gun and Maverick, Happy gilmore, Happy Gilmore 2 and Naked Gun. Yes. Marvin. I think it was The Naked Gun 33 and a third. Yes. With Anna Nicole Smith. Was the love interest of Leslie Nielsen? I think so. Yeah. Okay. Yes.
Todd Fritz
Paul, Is this Pamela Anderson, Liam Neeson thing real? I saw a couple clips yesterday that they were Getting chummy and being fun during the press junket.
Paul Pabst
I. Sources think. No, I don't have sources on it, but I did see these clips. They were on the Today show. And I don't. You know, sometimes you act lovey dovey. You know, I think Sydney Sweeney and Glenn Powell did that. They were in a movie and they were both in relationships, but they were very love. They were selling it and I don't know, neither of them are in relationships anymore, though. I know. Selling it. Yeah, they. They were selling little too well. I think Leslie Neil or. I think Liam Neeson and Pam Anderson seem like an item there. There was a picture where Pam had her sons there and Liam Neeson had his sons there, and they're both single. And it just felt like there was. There was something going on. Felt like there was some sparks going on there. Yes. Todd, I will hunt you down.
Dan Patrick
I will find you, and I will take you out to dinner.
Paul Pabst
Thank you. That's how he got her. Yeah. Do you think he did that taken voice? I sure hope so. Yeah. Todd does that voice occasionally. Just walks around. Nobody in particular that he's speaking to. And then he'll do his. Leslie, I always say, Leslie, Liam Neeson. Why don't we grab some coffee sometime? Perhaps this evening. Perhaps. I will hunt you down and I will kill you. She will have the chicken. Yes. I will have the best but good for every time you see Pam Anderson, it feels like every picture says makeup free. Pam Anderson. Now, I saw her in the Last Showgirl and she was really good in that movie. It's. It's a. About a showgirl in Las Vegas and she's getting old. They're gonna stop doing the Showgirl performances. And I thought she. She came off very well. I thought, you know, you don't. I don't think you think Pam as a great actress, but in this role, I thought she was really good and good for her. If she found love. When she married to somebody for like 48 hours some. Was it Robert Evans, the movie executive? I think she went to see Julian Assange. Is that his name? I think at the time he was known as the luckiest man in the world. Yeah.
Todd Fritz
For 48 hours.
Paul Pabst
Yes. Yes. But the Weekender, I think they called it. Is that what it was gonna be?
Dan Patrick
The Weekender?
Paul Pabst
Yeah. You don't have to get married. Yeah. Yeah. Just get married on a Friday, Devo on a Monday. Yeah. All right. Hey, no harm, no foul. Yeah. How about you just go out? You know what? It was fun while it lasted. And Then that's it.
Todd Fritz
Yes, Paul, I'm trying to find a hard news report. No pun intended. Liam Neeson's 73 years old. She's 58. I found nothing on NPR or BBC, but I did find People magazine report.
Paul Pabst
That's my bible.
Todd Fritz
That's right. Pamela Anderson and Liam Neeson are dating. It's clear they're smitten. Exclusive source to People.
Paul Pabst
But then you had Martin Short and you had the great actress Selena Gomez. No, no, not her. But she's in that series. No. Who's the greatest female? Meryl Streep. Yes, Meryl Streep.
Todd Fritz
They're getting after it.
Paul Pabst
Well, I don't know if it's that. I don't know if that's the description. I think they're dating. Like, I think she got divorced and I think her. They met on only murders in the building. And they're going out with each other. I believe they are going out with each other. That's hot. Although I read where they're right now going through a rough patch. But let it breathe a little bit.
Todd Fritz
Let's get into it.
Paul Pabst
Yes. But yeah, I think Liam Neeson and Pam Anderson, they're. They're getting after it.
Todd Fritz
Well, call it like I see it.
Paul Pabst
I don't know what that means or have you ever been smitten, Todd? You strike me as you're smitten just about every night when you watch local newscasters. Four or five days a week, something I catches my eye makes gets me sweating. Nobody watches more local news than Fritzi. Shout out to Rachel Frank Fox 61 News, Connecticut. Thank you, Todd. Alrighty. So we're just getting started here. And do we have a poll question to start seaton? We do. I think we're doing that after the break. After the break. No, we need to dice. We need to digest some of the news that we've just. Yeah, okay. Talking about here. Okay. All right. DraftKings just sent me the NL MVP odds in the American League. MVP odds. And it's basically Shohei Otani's in both. It. Is it Shohei Otani over Pete Crow Armstrong. But it's getting interesting in the American League because Cal Raleigh is not that far behind Aaron Judge when you know with these MVP odds. Right now, Aaron Judge is minus 160. Cal Raleigh is plus 130. So he's in the rear view mirror of Aaron Judge right now. And Judge is injured. Shohei Ohtani minus 2000. Pete Crow Armstrong plus 1300. That is a. I would make room in my trophy case. If I'm Ohtani, I would say to my wife, hun, gotta make room for another one of these MVPs. That would give him four, I believe. Yes, Paulie.
Todd Fritz
And Ohtani's pitching a little bit more every week and pitching well in his six appearances so far this year. 12 innings, but 13 Ks, three walks, only two earned runs. He's pitching fantastic.
Paul Pabst
But you can frame the box score July 29, 2025, that Shohei Ohtani looked human because we all know he's extraordinary. He is the. The unicorn. But last night against the Reds, he struck out four consecutive times. Now he struck out four times in a game, a couple of times in his career. More importantly, the Dodgers won this. But Shohei Otani was a mere mortal last night. Four consecutive strikeouts there. But they did get the win. Trade deadline will come up tomorrow. Lucas in Texas leads us off this morning. Hi, Luke. What's on your mind today?
Dan Patrick
Hey, Dan. Good morning.
Paul Pabst
Good morning.
Dan Patrick
Very temporarily, it's Lucas in Kentucky or some work. And then tonight it's going to be Lucas and Cincinnati. I'm going to the Dodgers Reds game. Excited for that. But I just wanted to bring up two baseball things. I know we're about to jump into football season full time, but number one, looking at like the third market, our aftermarket ticket sales, the Ohtani effect is so real. The difference between tickets last night and today is more than double. I mean, it's. It's a real effect that he has, even. Especially on the road. But the other thing, I know there's been discussion about Rob Manfred and some of the, you know, the frank discussions they're having about the future of the game. I do want to give credit where credit is due. I've been to three different parks this year, three different games in person, and if you haven't, over the last couple of years, the changes that they've implemented with pitch clock with time between innings has made a noticeably better effect on the end game experience. Like actually at the stadium, before you know it, you look down at your watch in the eighth inning, you're like, man, we've only been here for two hours. It's a, it's a noticeably better effect and I wish more people would see it, but got to give credit where credit is due.
Paul Pabst
Thank you, Lucas. Yeah. And I spoke about Rob Manfred going into the Phillies locker room. I don't know the full details. I know what was reported. I don't know if something led up to the confrontation between the commissioner and Bryce Harper. I just was disappointed that Bryce Harper is using that language to the commissioner in front of everybody. And I'd like to know more. We've invited both on and because I know going in there and talking about a salary cap, the players don't want to hear that. But I do give the commissioner credit that at least he was meeting with people face to face. But I don't think you need to say get the F out of here if you're Bryce Harper. Would Bryce Harper say that if it was just the commissioner and Bryce Harper and they're meeting in his office in New York City? Or how would the Bryce Harper take it if he came to see the commissioner and the commissioner said, get the F out of here, it wouldn't go well. But the commissioner, his job is to oversee the health of the game and moving it forward. I think he's done a really good job in some areas. A really good job. You know, he whiffed on the Astros. I don't like the let's start at second base in the 10th inning. I don't like that. But there's some other things that he's implemented that have helped the game. His job is to grow the game. Sometimes you grow the game and you're not making friends or you're making friends on one side and not the other side. And yes, the commissioner does work for the owners, but Bryce Harper, to say it, the commissioner didn't back down. He wanted to stay in there. But I'd like to know a little bit more about it because there's probably three sides to this. But I was just surprised that give the commissioner the respect for coming in there. You may not like what he's going to say, but you should still respect him. All right. We'll take a break. We'll come up with our poll question. Got our play of the day. Stat of the Day is always brought to you by Panini America, 877-3DP Show. That's 877-3-DP Show. Operator Tyler sitting by. He'll take your phone calls. We're back after this Dan Patrick Show. I mentioned Shohei Otani struck out in each of his first four plate appearances. Dodgers beat the Reds. That's the first time he's done that in 981 games in Major League Baseball. He struck out four times in a game, six times in his career, including once earlier this season. He will be pitching tonight against the Cincinnati Reds. We were talking earlier, before the show started, about the nickname. You know, sometimes you'll get a nickname. Some players give themselves a nickname. Travis Hunter is called the Unicorn. Now. Kristaps Porzingis was called the Unicorn. We have different players, I think, who have been called the Unicorn. And Travis Hunter was asked about the nickname.
Todd Fritz
Travis, we got to come up with.
Dan Patrick
A nickname for you.
Paul Pabst
Okay. Because there's. Nobody does what you do. What will it be? It's a unicorn. It is the Unicorn. Yes, sir.
Dan Patrick
Get it out there and get some.
Paul Pabst
Posters and stuff and that kind of thing. Yeah, I'm gonna try. I'm gonna try to see what I can do.
Dan Patrick
I like it.
Todd Fritz
I like the Unicorn.
Dan Patrick
I call you the Machine, though, because.
Paul Pabst
You play all those plays. How many plays do you think you could play? You think you could play them all? Yeah, I definitely think I could play them all. If. If I didn't think I could play them all, I wouldn't be trying to do it. All right, so he's been called the Unicorn. I think he was called that in college and now in Jacksonville his rookie year. And words getting around a little bit deeper in NFL circles of being called the Unicorn. I don't know how much he's going to play on offense this year, but if you look at last season when he won the Heisman Trophy, he was part of almost 87% of the offensive plays and he was part of 83% of the defensive plays. If I'm going to look at what will be the percentages in the NFL, probably start out 80.
Dan Patrick
20.
Paul Pabst
80%. 20%. How do you use him? Can you bring him in as a decoy? How much do you want to have him playing defense, then do you wait till third down for offense? Now, he is young, so I'm guessing that he knows what he's capable of doing. This is just a question of you have a new head coach in Liam, Liam Cohen. And how much do you want to use him? You need him. You definitely need him. And you start to wonder how much can you use him. This is that, you know, rookies talk about hitting the wall in all sports, where you go, boy, this is a long season. And it is because, you know, the game is more demanding than college. Now, college, they're playing 14, 15 games. If you include the bowl game. Now you have a 17 game schedule, and maybe you go into the postseason, maybe you add a couple more games there, but they'll. They'll talk about hitting the wall. And I think that would be the one thing that I would caution the Jag zone is how can I keep him? I need him fresh and ready to go late in the season. We don't need to do it to get attention here. We can build on this. Let's see how well he plays, let's see how well he plays defensively, and then we can bring him over offensively. I just, I don't want him splitting and I don't want him being good at both. I would like for him to be great at one of them, and then if he's really good at the other one or good at the other one, you know that that's going to be an unbelievable start to his career. I'm surprised there's. There hasn't been that much fanfare. And granted, he plays for Jacksonville, but Shador Sanders. The attention for Shador dwarfs Travis Hunter. Cleveland passed on Travis Hunter. And speaking of the Cleveland Browns, Jimmy Haslam is the owner of the Browns and he was asked who made the call draft night to take Shador Sanders. We have good process. Okay. And if you just told me Friday night driving home, y' all are going to pick Shador, I would say that that's not happening. But we had a conversation early that and then we had a conversation later that day. I think we had the right people involved in the conversation. At the end of the day, that's Andrew Barry's call. Andrew made the call to pick Shador. Okay. Now, it felt. I thought two things when I heard that if this goes south, you know who to blame. But also, maybe Jimmy Haslam is finally doing the right thing, that you're not a smart football guy. Did you make the call on Deshaun Watson. And if you did, that's why you should turn it over to your football people because you gave him a completely guaranteed contract there. But this is on Andrew Barry, your gm. He made the call with Shador Sanders. Now, I was told differently, but the owner is telling you because I think that there was a phone call or two made without getting too specific about this to nudge Jimmy Haslam to take Shador Sanders. And I think that's what happened. But, and, and look, if they get one of these court, nobody's talking about Dylan Gabriel. And he was taken before Shador Sanders and had a decorated college career, far more decorated than Shador. But you know, there's the possibility that Shador Sanders could be the quarterback for them. I don't think if you emerge as the starting quarterback, it's Kenny Pickett, it's a 40 year old Joe Flacco and Dylan Gabriel. I mean, it, it's not exactly Marino and Elway and Jim Kelly, but you know, it feels like Shador Sanders has some obstacles in front of him that his name helped him, but his name is hurting him a little bit because we're like, okay, let's see how great you are. And we saw how far he slipped. But the only thing I can go on is my source told me that he's acted mature aside from the speeding tickets, that when he's, he's on the football field, he's business. It's, it's not, there's no sense of entitlement. I don't know what that means. You know, I don't know how that translates to. Can you play on Sunday? I don't know. And when people say, well, you got the Sanders name, he's not an athlete like his dad. He, he's just not. He's a drop back pocket passer, he's not going to beat you with his legs. I'm told that he is more athletic than people are giving him credit for. I said, well, the problem is his dad is one of the great athletes who's ever played the game. But by all accounts it feels like he is ingratiating himself to his teammates. And that's really important. But I just want to know, can you play on Sunday? That's it. And it still feels like Joe Flacco is going to be the starting quarterback for the Cleveland Browns. Like that's the safe pick. That's where I would go because we're talking about Cam Ward. Is Cam Ward going to be ready for the Titans? He has to be. But Shador doesn't have to be ready or Dylan Gabriel. Kenny Pickett's battling an injury, but it might be Joe Flacco. And Joe Flacco might give you a better chance of winning because you get all that experience. I mean, he's a pocket passer as well. And I'm not sure if they have a game plan. Great. Because they have two first round picks next year. I want to know how much time they'll give Dylan Gabriel and Shador Sanders to see if they can actually play starting quarterback in the NFL. Because if you remember, Colin Cowherd had the speculation. I can't say it's a report that the Browns would maybe bring in Nick Saban and then draft Arch Manning. Well, Jimmy Haslam, the Brown's owner, was talking about Arch Manning. Well, Tony, you know, you're in the business and you get paid by how many hits you get. Okay. And I think if you know the Manning family, I would bet that. And I don't know Arch at all. Okay. I bet he stays in college two years.
Dan Patrick
So that's.
Paul Pabst
I don't think that's worth discussing. Okay. That's the way I feel. Arch Manning is going to play two more years. That it not. So Nick Saban's going to wait two more years for Arch Manning and then you got to make sure you draft him. It just seemed, you know, like a long shot that any of those possibilities could happen, you know, and maybe, maybe Shador Sanders or Dylan Gabriel is his starting quarterback and you could turn your attention to somebody else. I don't think the Browns are going to be that good. I think the over under might be five wins, five and a half wins. I think the team to keep an eye on being bad. The Giants feels like the Giant season hinges on Malik Neighbors staying healthy. And then there was a report yesterday where he got banged up a little bit. You. You can't lose him because they got a tough schedule. You're in that division and you got three quarterbacks, two quarterback. You know, Jackson Dart. Is he going to play? You got Russell Wilson, Jameis Winston. It just feels like. And look at their schedule. Can you pull up their schedule, Paulie? Because the Giants could be like 1 in 8, maybe, you know, 1 and 7, something like 2 and 7 to start out because it's pretty tough sledding for the Giants right out of the gate.
Todd Fritz
Yeah, the Giants are at the Commanders at Dallas, host the Chiefs, host the Chargers at the Saints, little break. Then Eagles, Broncos, Eagles, Niners. Yeah, all better teams.
Paul Pabst
It's pretty tough. You could know where the Giants stand after around nine games and it feels like it's make or break for that coach, maybe the front office there. What happened with Saquon Barkley? You get, you know, you take Jackson Dart. Is he going to play this year? Are they even going to be around to help develop him? But that schedule is pretty tough. I think it's one of the top five toughest schedules in the NFL. Yes.
Todd Fritz
Paulie and Malik, neighbors for the Giants last year, one of the most targeted rookies in NFL history. He started 13 games, 170 targets. He caught 109 balls for seven touchdowns.
Paul Pabst
He's a great player. Great player. But is is rusher, starting quarterback. And how long till Jackson Dart do? You wait until maybe the season is awash and then you bring in Jackson Dart and then you start to see what you have to build for the future. Because it feels like the Giants could be the worst team in the NFL. They're least in the conversation. And that's not a conversation you want to be involved in yet. Paul.
Todd Fritz
Going back to Cleveland, Shador Sanders started 50 games in college. Dylan Gabriel started 64 games in college. He played six college seasons.
Paul Pabst
Yeah. Yeah. Those guys with the COVID years, you know, they put up, you know, big numbers as far as starts. And that's, you know, that's a great sample size. But I haven't heard much about Dylan Gabriel, but part of that is he might be performing better than Shador Sanders. But Shador Sanders is going to get the coverage. So much so he's getting more coverage than Travis Hunter, who is going to be a legitimate. Maybe every down player. Incredible. And the Unicorn? He wants to be called the Unicorn. I'm fine. Good, good. You know.
Todd Fritz
Yeah, Paulie, we're working on some. How about the hybrid? You get a car deal. I don't think anyone's been called the hybrid.
Paul Pabst
Okay.
Todd Fritz
Covers both things.
Paul Pabst
Okay. Todd, you got any nickname suggestions? I don't have anything great yet, but I'll continue to think about it. Okay. I don't want to force it. Oh, you don't wait till later. I'm going to guess in the next 10 minutes you'll probably have some. I will have. Thank you. Yeah. Yes. I'm going to guess. Alan Hershey, Pennsylvania. Hi, Al. What's on your mind today? Hey, Al. Glen in San Diego. Hi, Glenn. What's on your mind today?
Dan Patrick
Dan, thanks for taking my call. How are you guys doing?
Paul Pabst
Great. Glenn.
Dan Patrick
Hey, listen, I just had a suggestion and a request. I'm going to give you the request First. So I don't. So I don't choke on this. The Harbaugh mannequin. Can we upgrade him to charger gear this year? Because I really believe we're going to go to the AFC Championship, unfortunately, to lose to the Bill, but we are going places this year. And I think you guys should use Jacklink sausage as your sponsor for the jack off. Because whether you realize it or not, this jack off is going to be huge.
Paul Pabst
All right, well, thank you. Thank you, Glenn. We appreciate that. If the Chargers go to the AFC title game, then we'll. We'll change the Jim Harbaugh Michigan mannequin. Michigan, man. Yeah. Do you think we're safe keeping the Jim Harbaugh Michigan mannequin? Oh, for sure. Really? The Chargers AFC title game. Okay. I'm not buying in. I can't do it anymore. I did it too long, too many years. I can't do it. Even if they get there, I'll be like, great. It's just like Arizona basketball. If they make the Final Four, then I'll go. Okay. Hey, I'll eat my words here. Yes.
Todd Fritz
Paul, I think you're making a horrible mistake. You've been on the Chargers since I've known you. And they were 11 and 6 last year. They added a great running. Two great running backs. Harbaugh always wins. They went from 5 and 12 to 11 and 6 with the same basic roster.
Paul Pabst
I know, I know.
Todd Fritz
I am all in on the chart.
Paul Pabst
All in. All in. All in, Paul. In. All in. But what's that mean?
Todd Fritz
I would.
Paul Pabst
Here's the bet for you.
Todd Fritz
I'll bet that they win a playoff game.
Paul Pabst
Okay. All in. Ish. Ish. That's not AFC title game. Let me.
Todd Fritz
Let me consider it.
Paul Pabst
Okay, Look, Harbaugh has a formula. I mean that he knows what the recipe is. No matter where he is, he tries to incorporate the same recipe. They're a running team, defense, and Justin Herbert, we need you to be magical. You don't have to be Superman. You can be Clark Kent. This is what Daniel Jeremiah, this former scout said yesterday on the show. You can be Clark Kent, but occasionally be Superman. That's all you need. I think he joins us on the program tomorrow. Justin Herbert, right, Tom? Correct. Thank you, Todd. Yes. Paul.
Todd Fritz
Chargers outscored their opponents last year by 101 points. The Chiefs outscored their opponents by 59. Just to give a little comparison, they won their last three. The Chargers are poised.
Paul Pabst
But then they had the playoff game.
Todd Fritz
It always gets in the way.
Paul Pabst
Yeah, it does a damn playoff if.
Todd Fritz
They could jump from week 17 to the Super Bowl.
Paul Pabst
Yes.
Todd Fritz
Help everybody.
Paul Pabst
Is Philip Rivers going to join us? Todd? Yeah. It's a big Chargers day tomorrow. Okay.
Todd Fritz
You gotta be all in.
Paul Pabst
All right, let's get Ladanian Tomlinson and Dan Fouts. I would round it out. Yeah. Natron Means. Come on. All right. Chuck Muncie.
Todd Fritz
Oh, the glasses.
Paul Pabst
Chuck Muncie with the glasses. Stan Humphries. Come on.
Todd Fritz
Okay, Lionel Little Train James. I'm going deep.
Paul Pabst
Cut. Ron Yeri, former number one overall pick, I think.
Todd Fritz
Great lineman.
Paul Pabst

NFL Network's Inside Training Camp airs daily through August 6, and Ian joins us now. When's the last time you visited a camp and you've got either one of those oh my gosh positive or oh my gosh, negative feeling?
Dan Patrick
I've had some. I've had some overly positive ones, I think. You know, especially for some of the places that have, like, really struggled the last couple of years. Like, you know, I was just at the Chiefs and it looks, I mean, the practice was so good. It was tough, intense, but it was so good. And Mahomes looked awesome. But you're sort of like, all right, like, that's what you expect. It was like a good reminder of why the Chiefs are in the super bowl basically every year. Then you go a couple other places and you can be like, all right, I can see if they're going to have a big turnaround. Like, why? Like, I was at the Titans and you see Cam Ward, you watch him throw a little bit, you gain an understanding for why teammates and coaches love him, the work ethic and all that stuff. And I left there being like, I don't know how many times they're going to win this year. Like, maybe it's like six or seven, I don't know. But I can really see how the rebuild would start now. And so, like, that's sort of what you get, you know, rather than like, all right, this team's going to win the super bowl. Because, like, the really good teams, they kind of look just normal to you.
Paul Pabst
You know, what do you think of the Broncos? That they felt like they surprised people. And I know you're just going there now, but now we expect Bonix to be a playoff caliber quarterback. We know Sean Payton's a Hall of Fame coach, but the expectation level, like the Commanders as well. That second year we saw this with the Texans, you know, what is it you feel like when you, you think of the Broncos going into what can is considered like the second year of this turnaround?
Dan Patrick
Yeah, I mean, it's definitely going to get harder. Schedule will get harder, expectations will get more. I think people know what to expect of Bo Nicks now. I think last year, like, I would be in that list of like, is Bo Nix going to be a franchise starting quarterback in the NFL? Like, I really wasn't sure. I really didn't know. You watch him enough last year. You watch like, for instance, the place he made in that Bengals game late, and this guy looks legit. And so the Broncos had no business winning that many games last year. They really didn't. Like, I, I thought it would be kind of like a transition year, like six or seven. And they were really good. And they didn't even have the personnel close to being as good as they, as the record was. And so this year, you know, another year in the draft, another year development, some key free agents, like, you know, Funga and Greenlaw, both, like, love both of those. They should be good. Like, I know the expectations are more. But they should be more ready as an organization to be good. And like, it was a good reminder for me and I guess for everyone. Sean Payton is a very, very excellent head coach.
Paul Pabst
I'm wondering about the trend. The NFL is a copycat league, and is the trend going with younger coaches? You know, you do have Pete Carroll. I think there's always the possibility of Belichick or if Nick Saban wants to get back in it. But is the trend now with that younger guy offensive minded or, you know, even in Aaron Glenn's situation, defensive minded?
Dan Patrick
Yeah, I mean, that's kind of what it feels like. Or at least let me say this. If you have a young guy that's really good, you don't hear any more like, well, he hasn't paid his dues or is he ready? It feels more like actually kind of like the players are treated where it's like, if you're talented enough, start to make mistakes and everyone will be okay with it, because learning while doing it is better than not having that talent on the field. You know what I mean? So, like, there's going to be some young coaches who, like, Liam Cohen is a great example. Right. Like, he's really smart, he's really talented. I was in Jacksonville. He sounds like he has a really good vision for what he wants it to look like and how hard it needs to be. And he has been trained by Sean McVay and Todd Bowles, two guys who have done it consistently. Like, he, they should be better this year, but, like, it's not going to be perfect because he's a young coach who hasn't done it. So I think teams are more willing to roll with some of the growing pains. And like, it's not just, you know, it's not just head coaches. Right? Like the offensive coordinate offensive coordinator named Grant Udinsky, who's like in his late 20s, I think, and is already an OC and 10 years ago, would never be, but he's talented enough. We're like, you know what? Let's just do it.
Paul Pabst
Talking to Ian Rapoport, NFL Network Insider, part of NFL Network's Inside Training Camp, airs daily through Aug. 6. John Gruden put out something where he says something about he's on the verge of doing something coming back. It. I don't know if you saw that. Is there a future for Jon Gruden to come back in the NFL in your opinion?
Dan Patrick
You know, there's still some, some legal issues that need to be worked through now. Like if, if somebody wants to hire him. My sense is if there would be things where everybody could get together on the legal side and figure it out and either compromise or just settle it, handle it, whatever. Like perhaps, you know, I'm sure there's some interest. I haven't heard any team particularly trying to hire him as a head coach. I did know there were some teams that thought about hiring him as a coordinator which, like, how would you, you know, would be hard to have a better hire than that as a coordinator. I would say to me, as someone who likes football content as much as football, I kind of like him where he is, to be honest. That's just like selfish. He's, he's, he's in a great spot. I mean, I think it's his stuff is, is really good, but I wouldn't rule it out. I really wouldn't.
Paul Pabst
The hold ins, Trey Hendrickson coming back to the Bengals means what to you?
Dan Patrick
It means I wouldn't say they're closer to a deal, but it's harder to not do a deal if that makes sense. Like, he's there. And this is why I always feel just sort of like personal preference that hold ins are more effective than holdouts. Holdouts to me, like, I wouldn't want to get fined and give away a bunch of money. Like that wouldn't be my move. But hold ins are tough because you See them every day. The fans see them every day at training camp. You know, you know how good Trey Henderson is, you know how good Terry McLaurin is. So if you're a coach, you're constantly looking at them like, hey, if that guy was on the field, like we would be a lot better. And so, you know, sometimes that can push a deal. I thought it was, you know, the right move for both of those guys to come in and ramp up the pressure. And I think there's a deal to be made for both of those players. Just, you know, you hope it's sooner rather than later.
Paul Pabst
And then the Micah Parsons situation as well, it just feels like all these deals get done. I know we get excited, we're hungry for any content this time of the year, but I just. Why do we wait? Why do owners wait?
Dan Patrick
I don't, I don't want to say it's owners waiting. I think for Micah Parsons, everybody seems to be waiting. You know, I have always thought that Micah would be, should be the highest paid, like highest paid non quarterback in the NFL the whole season. And so if that's the case, he's got to go last. And he is very smart and very savvy and business wise, you know, probably as well versed as anyone his age. And so. And his agent, David Mulagueda is very good at educating clients. So they know if you go last, you, you are the most. And so my sense is he was going to be last. I don't know if it's going to be like scrambling around before kickoff like with Dak a couple years ago or last year, whenever that was. But my sense is it's last. And like Aiden Hutchinson, you know, is in talks for a new deal with the Lions. Maybe that happens and then, then Micah goes.
Paul Pabst
Better run organization. The Chiefs of the Eagles.
Dan Patrick
Similar. Better run. I don't know. I mean, the Chiefs have been doing it for longer, but the Eagles have done such an unbelievable job of. It's a good mix of keeping veterans that you want to keep and then letting the guys you, you're okay letting go go and just replacing them in the draft. Both of those guys do an awesome job of drafting players and not needing them to play so they can learn the right way. I don't know who's better, but this is kind of where you want to get to, right? Like, you know, I don't, I don't pick records or predictions or whatever, but I don't really know anyone who doesn't believe both of those teams are going to have double digit wins this year, next year, the year after, like that's just what it's like. And you know, that's an unbelievable reality. It really is.
Paul Pabst
We go to the other end of the rainbow. The, the Brown zoner, Jimmy Haslam came out and said this draft selection of Shador Sanders is on his GM Andrew Berry. What did you make of that comment by the owner?
Dan Patrick
So I understand it and it is right. Like I know that this was Andrew Barry's pick. I know it was in consultation with his football people, his coaches, his personnel staff. And then, you know, the Browns, I mean this sounds strange to say because of the record, but they really are a very well run franchise. Despite having a quarterback albatross, Sean Watson in that contract and that situation and all that, they really do it the right way. And the right way is your football people make the decisions, the owner empowers them and gives the okay and then you move forward. There's two things that I didn't love about that whole situation, I think. One is the quote is being a little bit taken out of context. As in like it's Andrew Barry's blame, like he's the gm, like they're all his picks. So I thought it was fine. I just feels like people are missing the context. The other thing is Shador might be good, like I have no idea and I'm going to go there in a couple of days but we're not going to know this year. We may not know next year. So I don't really understand why it feels like people are blaming Andrew Barry. Like there is a chance and it's, you know, non zero percent that Shador Sanders is the franchise quarterback for the Browns and it's one of the best picks they ever made in franchise history. That is an absolute possibility. He is very talented. So, you know, yes, it was the GM's pick, but we don't know how it's going to go.
Paul Pabst
Yeah, I think the one thing I wonder about if it's Dylan Gabriel or Shador Sanders is how much of a Runway the Browns will give them with two first round picks next year. And if you know that, you got to fight that urge of do we see enough with Shador Dylan Gabriel to go let's give them another year or do you go all in with the two first round picks and try to get you your franchise quarterback?
Dan Patrick
That is a, that is the biggest of all the things for the Browns this year and I know they're trying to win and like the actual roster is pretty good I think Flacco, if he starts, could be totally fine. But that's the issue. And, like, I thought about it a ton because, like, you're on the road alone. All you do is think about these dorky football things, right? I don't. It's gonna be hard because, like, let's say it's a struggle, and let's say they're kind of not ready. All the fans are gonna care about all the talk radio and reporters, and Cleveland is a very intense media environment. All anyone's gonna care about is when can we see the young guys? And it might be Shador. It might be doing Gabriel. There's a lot of people in the draft who said Dylan Gabriel was 6 2, he'd be an early pick, which, you know, shout out to short guys. I root for all of them. I just. I don't know how you avoid that temptation. But that's the story of their season to me.
Paul Pabst
When's the last time you had a player get in your face over something you reported or said?
Dan Patrick
It does. It almost never happens because, like I said, you know, a player sort of make a snide comment, like, maybe once every five years, but can never tell if they're joking. What I try to do is before I do anything, I have the conversation. Like, even though it's really fast paced, like, a lot of times, you know, you sort of know what you're gonna hit send on before you do it. So I try to get to the agent or player or the GM or the PR guy and just be like, here's what I have, just to have the conversation before it goes public. So, like, I used to, you know, first seven or eight years doing this, it used to happen all the time. Now it almost never happens because at least people know what to expect when I say it on TV or when I hit send on a tweet.
Paul Pabst
Great to catch up with you, Ian. Safe travels. Thanks for joining us.
Dan Patrick
I got 39, 3.9 more miles, so this. This timing was perfect. Thanks, Dan.
Paul Pabst
All right, That's Ian Rapaport, NFL Network Insider, NFL Networks Inside Training Camp airs every day through August 6th. So he's been to the Bucks, Jags, Titan, Saints, Bears, Chiefs, and he's got the Patriots and the Bills coming up. You can be in camp now. When I worked in New York at CNN and I would go out to the jets camp and the Giants camps, and you could get a sense, it was weird. It shouldn't be something that's tangible, but, like, it. It felt different, you know, The Giants were onto something with Parcells. Now, the jets did have talent. The jets had the sack exchange. You know, they, they. But, but it felt different there. It felt like the Giants were professional. They knew what their roles were. And you had Belichick or you had Bill Parcells and Belichick as your defensive coordinator. It felt like they knew that they were going to do something big or bigger or special. The jets were just a fascinating group of personalities. You had Mark Gastono there, Joe Cleco, one of my favorite players, Ken o'. Brien. And you just, you, Al Toon, you, you had talent there, but it's, it was just a different feeling. It's almost like the Yankees and the Mets where you can have talent, but they just don't feel like they're the same or the same run organization. But being around. Mark Gastineau had a Rolls Royce. He was dating Brigitte Nielsen, who was, did she marry Sylvester Stallone or were they.
Todd Fritz
I think so.
Paul Pabst
They dated. Oh my gosh. And it was, it was a big deal, like, but he was just not liked by his teammates. Because even when I would go out there and you know, Marty Lyons, Joe Kleko, who was it? Abdul Salaam, like these guys knew that you're kind of out there for gas to know. Like they, they're like here for gas to know. And I go, well, you know, kind of because he was a big deal and. But yeah, just to sit down with him and he had bigger aspirations, you know, felt like he wanted to be. This is before Schwarzenegger, you know, one of those action heroes that, that's what he was hoping for. Yeah.
Todd Fritz
Paulie, I went back to double check and Mark Gasno has not made the hall of Fame. And you talked about likability, hurting someone's case or behavior after your career, but he had a five year run. He was four time first team all pro four years in a row. Yeah, that's hard not to make the hall of fame. He had 107 sacks in basically a five year span. His stats are hall of Fame. His personality kept him out, it appears.
Paul Pabst
Well, didn't he quit the game? I think he, he quit the sport. Was there, were there steroid accusations that he. I want to be fair to him, but I, I'm going off memory with.
Todd Fritz
I've got a couple articles here that said he retired a little early. He was 32 years old. Not sure why.
Paul Pabst
Yeah, yeah. I think walls may have been closing in on him.
Todd Fritz
He had a three year run with 20 sacks, 19 sacks, 22 sacks.
Paul Pabst
It's weird that he was viewed as selfish, like your job is to get sacks. But then it felt like I always thought that Kleko was a better player. I just thought Joe Cleco was sort of an Aaron Donald type player and. But Mark benefited from that, that everybody else was doing their job, which allowed Mark to just go after the quarterback. And he did, and he did it in, you know, charismatic style, but it just felt like he was viewed as it was the jets and then it was Mark Gastineau, whether that's fair or not. But that was always the feeling because they had other, you know, Ken O' Brien was very quiet guy that Freeman McNeil. You know, they, they had a really good roster and should have been better. Yes, Todd, I wonder how much I remember watching some of those games that his teammates were a little tired of his act or got them in situations where there was one time against the Rams, I guess like a fight broke out and they were all going after him and it didn't look like the jets teammates were in any rush to pull the Rams off of him from what I saw. Yeah.
