I'm Jake Hofer and this is back 40, a limited series show on Wire to Hunt, part of Meat Eaters Podcast Network. Each episode, I'll be asking eight whitetail hunting pros a focused, thought provoking question about hunting and land management. How do I hunt the best part of the farm with less than ideal access?

You are listening to the Dan Patrick show on Fox Sports Radio. Welcome in. Good morning to you. It's Dan Patrick show, fox Sports Radio iHeartradio app with Dan Byer, Jason Stewart, Chris Perfett. I'm Doug Gottlieb. The Doug Gottlieb show crew sitting in for Dan and the Danets here as we get ready for football season. Well, we continue to ride out the wave of the brewers winning streak. The Angels winning streak, huh? You can put a halo on that one as the Angels sweep the Dodgers. I'm sure there's other stuff going on in sports and we're going to get to this Shador Sanders topic in one second. I do think that there's, this is a real thing, Dan. I think this year has been a abject disaster for the WNBA from this standpoint. We, you can be the most ardent wnba. I can't stand the women and how they treat Caitlin Clark or how the level of play or the promotion of it or putting them on ads instead of NBA players or whatever. There's plenty of guys out there that feel that way, right? But their main attraction is Caitlin Clark. She has not played during the meat of summer and by the time she comes back and plays, football is being played and zero people care about the WNBA now. There's, and there is a, there's a growing following. And I'm just telling you, like that last summer not putting her on the Olympic team was messy. It probably helped her personally as she, it was just too much of a whirlwind and she got kind of got her stuff together for the playoff run, but it did not promote the sport. And then the one woman that drives ratings to the sport isn't playing all summer and she'll come back and play. By the time she comes back and plays, it's the end of August. We're on to football. College football starts in what, two weeks?
Devin
Yes.
Jake Hofer
It's over.
Devin
Yeah.
Jake Hofer
Like you want to talk about missing a window, right? I, that's, that's, I was thinking about that last night. I was like, hey, what's missing? Why has there been zero to talk about for like three weeks outside of Shador, Whatever. And I know it's usually this way, but I landed on hey, last summer we were talking about Olympics, wnba, Caitlin Clark, and she's very much still alive, still playing basketball, but injured right now during the one time of year where nothing else is going on that anybody wants to Talk about.
Devin
And here's the scary thing. College football is a week from Saturday away because of week zero. The full schedule obviously coming up with August 28th, two weeks from today. And then obviously on Saturday, August 30th, we get a full slate of games. But Doug, to your point about the wnba, I don't think any storyline was able to grow and I thought maybe we were going to get that. I thought we were maybe going to get more players receptive to Caitlin Clark. We saw Sophie Cunningham make a name for herself and she made quite a name for herself and sticking up for her. But I thought something was interesting when the Connecticut sun played the Fever and they moved a game to Boston and this was after the little melee that they had earlier in the season. And I'm like this could be good for the WNBA to get Connecticut sun fans maybe to be a rival of the Indiana Fever. That did not happen. There was no ability to make a rivalry with Paige Beckers and the Dallas team because Caitlin Clark hasn't been available. Nothing was able to progress this year and if anything maybe it took a step back because we see that it is so Caitlin Clark driven.
Kerry Rhodes
Don't you think that the contrast has been offered up though? Because Doug's point that it's been a disaster for the wnba. Can't you make a case that. That it's been a net positive for Caitlin Clark and that she proved in her absence how valuable she is to an entity. This coming off of her declining to do that stupid three on three league coming off of get a not being included on the Olympic team. This whole Sophie Cunningham storyline is all about her protecting Caitlin Clark. That's her brand. She's gotten the podcast, she's gotten the ad time because of protecting Caitlin Clark. So maybe a disaster for the wwe.
Jake Hofer
Another part to it.
Kerry Rhodes
But net positive for Cam Clark is.
Jake Hofer
Another part to the. The Sophie Cunningham, right. She's an attractive woman that plays basketball, right. And she's flirty with, with how she looks at the camera. So I mean I think.
Kerry Rhodes
But yes, being white and straight too.
Jake Hofer
Yeah, all those things. All those things were. All those things work. But I think most of it is that the part. It's the connection. She, she's. She's. You want to riding the wave of Caitlin Clark or she's catching some of that, that whitewash of Caitlin Clark along with you know, being attractive and you know, being completely different from what our images of WNBA players was for the past 25 years which has allowed us to hyper focus on a fifth round Pick at quarterback. Right. It's like we just, we have to pay attention to something. And I even think like the Micah Parsons thing because the, because the Cowboys thing happens every single year, right? Every single year. It's like, hey, who can we create some sort of salary drama? We know Jerry's ultimately going to pay him. Let's ask for an obscene amount of money. Maybe it's not the time, it's not the place. And then Mike Parsons, really good. Cowboys aren't, but they're not terrible. You're going to pay him. He's doing a hold in. He's really under contract for three more years without negotiation if they want to. So it's going to get done. It was kind of agreed to. Then the agent was like, yo. Anyway, I think people are completely over talking about the Cowboys. Like, let me know when the Cowboys lose late in the season and fall out of the playoffs so I can make fun of them. Or let me know if they get to the playoffs and lose early so I can make fun of them. But I've, I've seen this movie. I know how it ends. So instead we're hyper focusing on Shador Sanders, which brings us to Dan Beyer. Your thought on Shador?
Devin
Yeah. So earlier in the week, Doug, I just made the point that with the music playing in week one of a preseason game where he hadn't gotten a lot of snaps with film crew following him around, that those were the things that I didn't think NFL teams wanted to deal with or felt that there was a lot of extra with Shador. And which was one of the reasons why he fell in the NFL draft. And for as great as he played on that Friday night against Carolina, it was everything that was extra about it that was the reason or that I felt that he fell in the draft and none of that had changed. So there wasn't an opportunity for Shador Sanders to maybe do things a bit different. The reason why he fell to the fifth round, I felt was because of everything that was extra with him that teams didn't want to deal with.
Jake Hofer
Yeah, yeah. I actually, I'll draw a comp to what we went through last year. You know, you get the job late and we're on what's called APR probation. Probation. So APR probation, we can only practice five instead of six days a week. And those four hours of practice time that we lost have to be mandatory study hall for your team. Right. And it's not because of my team. It's like two years previous team was an academic disaster. Anyway, the point was that when we, every player we took, we had to take with the mindset of, okay, what happens if he flunks out? We can't have a guy flunk out because you have a certain number of points. You know, everybody has to be eligible. Then if they leave, they have to go find a school, has to be a four year school. There's all these rules with. They have to get a certain GPA in order to transfer to a four year school, to, to a junior college. They're a freshman to another school, they got to get a, you know, a 2.5, otherwise they hurt you academically. So we had to evaluate who we take based upon how hard they were to get rid of. Make sense?
Devin
Yes.
Jake Hofer
And I think that was a real thing for sure. Sanders, which was, you know, he clearly blew off a bunch of these meetings and was disengaged and frankly, rude. Everybody says it. I've heard from real NFL people that it was in many ways worse just because this was their way of, I don't want to be drafted by that team. And, you know, coaches, everyone talks to everyone in the industry. They just do. So then word got out that Shador Sanders was a complete jerk in these meetings. And then you start to factor in, okay, well, I might like him, but Deon's gonna want my job. Does he wants to coach his kid. And oh, yeah, by the way, you're gonna have a film crew, you're gonna have his boys. You have a kid that comes from. Kid that comes from money. So there's the perception, whether it's real or not, that he's arrogant, that he's entitled. Nobody wants entitled on a sports team, especially from a guy who's not a first round draft pick, you know, and. And then you have to factor in your mind, okay, what happens if we cut him? Because that's a big reason. Kaepernick. There's lots of reasons. Kaepernick was never back in the NFL. Okay? He didn't want to be a backup. And he was at the point in his career where he had to be a backup and then potentially earn it or get a little luck. Guy gets hurt and then you get an opportunity. But it was, the big part was, and I talked to a gm, I remember at the time said, it's not that. If I bring him in, it'll be great, it'll be well received. He's a talented guy. He's probably a backup at this stage in his career. You know, he's not great at reading a Defense, remember, he can only scramble out to his right. There's a lot of things that. But it was. What happens if I cut him? If I cut him, I can be called a racist. Am I going to lose half my locker room? What happens for Shador Sanders if we cut him? You know what, what happens? What, how are we received? Do, do we, do we look like clowns for taking this guy on? So I, yeah, I, I do see that. I, I completely agreed with your take, which is the, the play on the field was fine. It was good. It was good. I still don't know how good an army has. Right. It's still against, but whatever. Like, let's not diminish. It was good.
Devin
Sure, I agree.
Jake Hofer
But it's the, you show up and you're a fifth round pick and you're fourth in the depth chart and you got a dude bringing music, another guy holding your bag. Like, what, what are we doing? That's not how quarterback is played in the NFL. Quarterback, it's very much like a political position where you got to rally everybody behind you and you got it. The same reason that politicians, they go and do they go to these like diners or they go get ice cream and they always, you know what they always wear? They always wear a blue button down dress shirt. They don't wear a tie and they roll up their sleeves. Right? Now all these guys are ridiculously rich. Trump's the only one to be like, I'm rich. I'm wearing my stuff. I'm wearing the same suit every day. Like, I don't even know if he has, like, and you know, anything else to wear. But all these other politicians, they do because that's the job. You're supposed to look like the everyman. Right? I'm just roll up my sleeves, no tie, right?
Devin
I'm one of you.
Noah
I'm.
Jake Hofer
I'm one of you. Like, what. But that's where. And, and I. There's definitely a section of fans that think that this is about things that it's not about. That's just a, hey, it's a young black man trying to, trying to, you know, push the envelope of what's acceptable. Like, well, there's. The young black man was drafted number one overall quarterback this year. Like, what are we doing? It's happened 10 times in a row. It's not about that. It's about the appearance of being humble, not entitled and motivated to prove everybody wrong. Right. And that part, he's obviously motivated to prove everybody wrong. But, but it's, it's the delivery still feels like he doesn't actually get it and still hasn't actually got it.
Devin
And it feels like that he wants to do it on his own terms. And the, the point that, that I will stand by and I don't take anything back for what I said was it's also a little bit of an indictment on the NFL, but again, the NFL and these teams are in charge. So when you're applying for a job or going for a job job, you want to be able to show your worth and fit in. And I just found it surprising, instead of carrying a veterans duffel bag into the locker room like a rookie normally would, that another teammate of his was playing Shador's own song in week one of a preseason game. And I just, I. It was surprising to me and it felt like it was a lot. And at that point, like if it was week one of a regular season game where he had won the job, maybe, maybe there's something to that. Maybe at that point you can do it. But I just felt in week one of a preseason game, do you need your own soundtrack? Walking into the stadium and I just didn't think so. I thought the Tony Grossi interview that was recorded, which Tony ended up approaching Shador, but Tony didn't know that they were recording. That's another aspect of it. It's not that the NFL is scot free and it's all blamed on Shador, but that's where you would think a lot of the responses came from, that Shador is the victim in all of this and what's happening in Cleveland, because he was the one that was taken in the fifth round, that he's the one that's not getting the first team reps. Like that's sports. That's what you got to deal with. This is no different than other quarterbacks. So to put paint Shador as a victim here, which I don't think should or is trying to do, I think it's. I think it's the fan base of Shador that's trying to do that. I just, I don't agree with that at all.
Jake Hofer
Yeah, it, it definitely. It's given us something to get us through kind of this preseason. When we're talking about the Browns and their current fourth string quarterback, it has distracted us from talking about DeSean Watson who's still like working out. You know, they changed his contracts. I think they got him for a couple more years. Like that's gonna be weird when he. We haven't mentioned, like he's gonna come back at some point and want to play football.
Devin
It's.
Jake Hofer

Let's welcome in Mark Dominic. He joins us on the Doug Gottlieb show on a weekly basis. So we thought, let's bring him on the Dan Patrick show. Cause he's awesome. He's a former general manager, Tempe Buccaneers, 20 plus years, the Nash Football League. You name the job, he's had it and still works and still covers it. Still knows it. Mark, let me just ask you first, in terms of watching the All 22, what do you think of how Shador played in their opening exhibition game?
Noah
Well, thanks for having me on, guys. I think he played well. I mean, when you go back and you look where some of the ball placements were. Yeah. Were there some throws he'd like to have back? Of course, every quarterback, especially their first time. But just in terms of the arm movement, the ball velocity, the little pieces, it was like, okay, that's encouraging. That's what I kind of envisioned Shador to try to look like to be when you're playing out there for the Cleveland Browns. And so I was, I took it away as you know what? I think he'll be a starter for the Cleveland Browns. It won't be week one, but I do think he'll start this year for Cleveland.
Devin
What does it mean for Dylan Gabriel? Because he's the third round pick and seems to be in this quarterback sandwich, if you will, between everybody else. But what does it mean for the third rounder?
Noah
Well, I mean, I know there's whatever. There's some type of rumor that they're possibly going to Trade Dylan Gabriel. You know, he's got to give to the football field. He's, you know, hopefully getting healthy now. Get back out there. Look, they're going to keep three quarterbacks. I think they'll keep Joe Flacco, they'll keep the two rookies, and they'll let this thing play out over time. There's no rush here for Cleveland. They're wanting to see both guys kind of progress and see what they can do. But for whatever reason, Cleveland has the injury at quarterback, and it just can't get away from it. We've seen this before, right, with the Ravens, you know, again at that corner. But the Ravens have had that kind of an injury situation where you've seen the Ravens and the running backs all went down or the, you know, now the DBs are going down for the Ravens, you know, for whatever horrible event for the Cleveland Browns. It's now their quarterback position. Can't stay healthy.
Jake Hofer
Yeah, they still. I mean, we haven't mentioned Deshaun Watson, who's like, training, coming back from an Achilles tear that he tore and then re injured as. As he was rehabbing. Everyone who's a Cleveland Brown quarterback seems to be injured. Okay, let's. Let's scatter around the league a little bit. There's growing concern, at least when you read, when you watch about Caleb Williams. What have you heard in regards to how they feel like he's doing with the new system in Chicago?
Noah
Well, they're going to. There's not much they can say, but they're hopeful, like, they think that things are going to go well. Obviously, it sounds like the starters are playing again this week and that Caleb's going to get out there and show what he can do. You know, we'll. We'll know. Doug, I know it's hard, you know, watching a practice, you know, you know, saying things hasn't been the best of press conferences. You haven't heard the Jaden Daniels like, wow, look at how hard he's worked and he's put all this effort in. It's just kind of like, okay, you know, we got to figure out what we can do with this guy. You know, this is a make or break year. He's been out there on the field last year, he's now on the field this year. You know, I've always said, I've always worried if he's going to put enough time into it. I'm sure he's put good time into it. I really, as a former GM and anything, I just. I want to See him in the regular season, I want to see how he reacts. How much is he growing? Because as we all know, like year one to year two is the leap for players. It just is. Because the fact is they're not worried about vertical jumps. They're not worried about 40 times. They're not on these visits or to these different, you know, pro teams trying to figure out who likes him. They're focused on the playbook and how to learn it and how to grow. And so if Caleb Williams comes out and starts slow, it's a huge concern that they've got this quarterback picked wrong. But if he comes out and he plays consistent because again, he played good comparatively to Trevor Lawrence is for sure, Caleb Williams played well. It's just that we've got him on a pedestal and there's so much potential there in the tough division. We'll see if he can take the next step. I'm concerned because I never felt like he could in the first place.
Devin
I don't disagree with you, but the one thing that rubs me the wrong way, Mark, about this is Ben Johnson's got his new deal because first year, you know, five year contract. Ryan Poles now gets an extension to line up with that. Why so quick to move off of Caleb considering how much of a disaster last year was? Like, how can we really take last year and count it against him considering Shane Waldron was dismissed midseason, Eber Fluss is gone, you know, in his first year. Like, how much can we really hold last year against Caleb Williams?
Noah
A little bit. And that's what I said. And I agree with you, Dan. I think that when you watch last year's overall production, I think because Jaden Daniels played so well, we kind of like Caleb really struggled. Caleb actually played pretty good as a rookie. You know, as with everything that you're talking about and how he performed, just like I said, the trick is, does he take a step in a Ben Johnson offense? It's just that it hasn't felt warm and fuzzy, right? It hasn't felt like everyone's kind of wrapped their arms around Caleb. Like this has been amazing and we're really excited. It's been more a little bit hands off, like we're work in progress. You know, we're trying to get more consistent, you know, those kind of things. So you just read the tea leaves and say, okay, let's see. I mean, Caleb Williams was starting quarterback for this year and probably next year, no matter what, because you take a guy number one overall, you're going to Give him every shot. I mean, I remember the gm. I drafted a quarter corner in the third round and he got four years to try to become, you know, starting cornerback. If he'd have been drafted in the sixth round, I probably would have cut him after the first year. Try to put him on the practice squad. So where you're taken gives you that opportunity to stay longer. And even if it's frustrating for fans to sit there and go, eyes a bum, well, you know what? Ryan Poles can get fired, too. Just like players get cut after one year of a, you know, an extension, a GM doesn't mean that they're going to stay just because they had an extension. Owners can afford to, you know, eat these contracts like never before. You know, 10 years ago, it was hard to, you know, if you did an extension for a player to move away from that player. Now you can easily manipulate it through the sourcap and where the numbers are.
Jake Hofer
J.J. mcCarthy. What's the, what's the reaction up there?
Noah
Yeah, you know, it's, it feels like it's been good. You know, I didn't, if everything feels like it's like, okay, you know, he's going to be able to do it. The little bit I've watched the practice throws, you know, I've been very encouraged by where he's putting the ball in the way he's, you know, decisions he's making. I think it's good, you know, do I do. I think it's like, wow, you know, we have another Jayden Daniels. I don't know about that, but I certainly feel like just like Chicago should have hope. I think they have hope in Minnesota. It hasn't been, you know, all this doom and gloom or like, what's wrong with J.J. mcCarthy? It's more of like we just want to see it. But I from what it feels like, I think they're in a good spot.
Devin
To kind of take a bird's eye view. Mark Dominic joining us here on the Dan Patrick show on Fox Sports Radio. If you look at that whole division, so you got Detroit now with two new coordinators. We just talked Vikings and Bears. Now Jordan Love's got a thumb deal with the Packers. As you see it right now, where do you stand with the four teams in placing as we're a couple of weeks away from the start of the regular season?
Noah
It's an amazing division. You know, it feels like Minnesota and Chicago are, you know, are battling for who's going to end up third or fourth. And it feels to me like Green Bay and Detroit as good as Minnesota was last year, I just. It feels like Detroit, depending on, you know, the health of that defensive line and if it can come back, is the key to the difference. Right. And so I like the packers, though. I like Jeff Halfley. What he's done on defense, you talk about a coordinator has been able to stay there and now the guys understand what he's asking to do. You've got consistency at the quarterback spot. You got all these young guys growing up together. I like where the packers are. I think they're a nod above Detroit, as good as Detroit is. And either one of those two teams can represent the NFC in the super bowl, in my opinion. But I'm going to lean towards the packers because I just love the way that they've built this roster and how it's all growing up together at the same time, and it feels like a team that's going to be relevant for the next four or five years, for sure. And I believe in Jordan Love, and I think that he's got a chance to, you know, take his game to another level. And so with Luke Musgrave back, you know, now with, you know, Matthew Golden, I just think that the points are going to be very hard to overcome for the packers because they're going to score enough, meaning opponents are going to have a hard time putting up the amount of points that I think the packers can.
Jake Hofer
Okay, Matt Stafford, what's your read on on the Rams quarterback?
Noah
I think they're just being very cautious, right. They got to get him to week one, so they're just going to, like, you know, say what we need to hear, you know, everything. But Matt Stafford, to me, will walk out the tunnel Week one and play quarterback for the Rams. He won't play in the preseason. This is dense and Bennett's opportunity to show that he's worthy of the fourth round pick and can be the number two. But Stafford, I think, will be fine. I don't think this is something that's going to continue to linger out. I think it's just one of those things that they're being overly cautious with them because they understand the whole season is relying on him.
Devin
What is their view of this year? Because this has been my thing with the Rams. Doug's heard me say it. Jason's heard me say it. I think they were close last year on the scoreboard in beating Philadelphia. I don't know how close they were, but now in the NFL, it seems like if you have a shot, do it. It's why I thought they brought Stafford back. How close are they? And for a team that less need has been a mover and Shaker, they got two number ones in 20, 26. Would there ever be a point where they would be like, all right, Stafford's not healthy. Maybe, maybe we look in another way at the Rams kind of their big picture.
Noah
Yeah, I think, I think they've got to, they're trying to stay in that window with the most difficult position at all. Right. We see teams a lot of times like Josh Allen's going through it now, right. The Bills have spent a fortune of money trying to keep the, the crew together and then what's going to happen is those guys are going to come out and they're going to try to do it again. Patrick Mahomes is on the second wave of that right now, right. In terms of like he's come in the league. They had a shot to go get Super Bowls and then they had to like readjust the roster and now they're doing that right now in Kansas City and they're still relevant. The Rams are kind of, they've readjusted the roster except the quarterback is the aged one instead of a younger guy like Mahomes or Josh Allen or Lamar Jackson. And so I think the reason why they have two number ones is that they know that next year's draft, they've got to do something and they know they have to do it at that position and so they got the extra ammunition to be able to do that. I think they planned on that. This is Stafford's last season and that's why I think they're being safe with him. But I think the building blocks are there. This team does have a very young, explosive defense. It's very exciting, you know, getting the running back taken care of at a club friendly deal. Huge for them. So I think that you'll see them change that position out through the draft. I don't think they'll go for the veteran like take the picks and go get a veteran or somebody that's been somewhere else. I think they'll pick their own guy in the 2026 draft to be the next starter for the Rams.
Jake Hofer
James Cook signs a four year extension and this is a, it's a weird one, right, because he's only in, he's only in year four of a five year rookie contract. And I thought the is very telling that the agent's name were in the tweet and chapter's tweet. Right. So hey, this is what we want out there. We did this. It's it says $30 million guaranteed when you have that fifth year option out there. Right. So he was going to get paid more money next year anyway. What do you think the details actually look like in terms of this extension for a guy who has back to back thousand yard seasons?
Noah
Yeah. So, you know, James actually honors the rookie deal. It's a four year deal. That's what hit is. The next year would be the franchise tag for him. You know, first rounders obviously get the fifth year option for them. So James was, you know, he's going into his last season and the. What's, what's in front of him is that franchise tag, which is a significant number to me. The holding was pointless. If you're going to sign four years, 48 million. I think that was on the table the whole time. I don't think there's any way that wasn't on the table. I think the Bills just put their heels in and said, hey look, take it or. And I think what really happened behind the scenes was James Cooks was trying to get 16 to 18 a year and the Bills were laughing going, we're not giving you that. We're just. That's not going to happen. I mean, think of it this way. Zach Hiller, who's the agent for, you know, James Cook was Dalvin Cook. So Dalvin Cook's agent. Right. When Dalvin Cook did his deal with the Minnesota Vikings five years ago, Dalvin Cook got more money than James Cook got today when the salary caps jumped 60, 70 million. So this is not a great deal. This is nothing to beat your chest on. You know, he's. The agent's trying to say, hey, well James always envisioned himself as a Buffalo Bill. That's why we had to do it. Neil Baloney. You took, he took the deal that they put in front of you. You were scared to play it out, which I understand. I'm not gonna be mad at James Cook. It's 48 million potential dollars. But the reality is he left 3 to 4 million dollars on the field if he goes to free agency next year because I think somebody pays him 15, 16 million. But good, good for Buffalo Bills, good for James Cook. But it's not one where the agent should be beaten his chest. And I did a good job because it's just, it's just kind of a meh deal at the running back spot where it's good money again to the average American it's like huge money. But to the running back market, these last two extensions, you know, Kyron Williams obviously in the Rams and now James Cook, they continue to push that markets going down, it's like 1112 million a year. That's kind of what the market is, I guess.
Jake Hofer
Yeah, no, that was more my point, Mark, is that I think because of the success of Saquon Barkley and Josh Jacobs and and guys that had come to contract impasses, Derek Henry, there's this thought, oh, it's going to change the running back market. Then Saquon gets, you know, they tear up his deal and re up it like, no, it's pretty much the same. Their valuation is the same and if anything it's actually lower because as you point out, the salary cap has jumped substantially.
Noah
You just have to, Doug, you just have to. As a running back, I know it's hard. As an agent, it's easy for us to sit here and talk about it. You have to get to free agents and have 31 other clubs bid on you or you're going to take the 11 to $12 million deal because that's what clubs are going to offer. So you've got to just decide what do you want to do? Do you want to get paid or do you want to see what your value is? Two different things. Running backs, if they really want to get paid, they've got to get to free agency at a young age. Like they are. Like James Cook or Williams would be. Would have been no, again, no. They got to secure their bag. They want to get their money. I get it. No big deal. But we're not going to see a market change until somebody pushes the envelope and says I'm going to free agency.
Jake Hofer

Columbia, good morning to you. I hope you're having a great summer for many people like my son. Hayes can't be listening to the show because he's got his first day of school, high school, kicking off a lot of kids getting dropped off at their universities. We discussed this, like, last week. Like, I don't know, maybe I'm. Maybe my parents were old school, but I don't remember anybody taking me to school. Just bye bye. Felt like that old Saturday Night Live skit Bye bye, bye, bye, bye, bye. But this is the Dan Patrick show on Fox Sports Radio. Okay. Taylor Swift was on with the Kelsey's on the podcast. So there's a lot to it. Dan, I thought you brought up a bunch of interesting points, but maybe the most interesting was who does this serve? Right? Like who does it serve? What, what's the, what is the point? Why is she doing this? And what do you think that the answer is?
Devin
I was, I watched the almost entirety of the two minute, the two hour episode. I towards the end I just kind of fast forwarded a little bit. But it was on for two hours last night. And even at the end of that, Doug, I wondered, all right, did Taylor do this to bring her fans into the football world? Was it to get football fans to appreciate Taylor Swift?
Jake Hofer
Where.
Devin
What was the reason behind this? Ultimately, I think it shook down to. As we talked it out, I think it was probably a safe space for Taylor to say what she wanted to say and to reveal her album and to do it in a neat way with a person that she loves. So ultimately maybe it was just to serve themselves, but record numbers watching it, millions of people when it went live yesterday afternoon or I think evening in some parts of the country. But I had wondered and of what was the reason for it, even after watching the two hours. And ultimately I think it was just good for Travis and Taylor.
Jake Hofer
Yeah, I, I think that's what it was. I think it was. It gives America a look at sort of America's couple, right? And J. Stu, it took him probably six to nine months to go to come off of the it's a fake relationship argument. And to anybody who thought it was then you watch, you watch yesterday or you can watch now online and be like, not okay, that works. You know that there, that's a real thing. I do think that oftentimes we think there's a strategy involved. It's a lot like here's the parallel. I'm going to drive. I have a really good friend who worked with the president in his first term. And his thing was anybody who thinks that when he comes out with some new plan that there's, that they've workshopped it or whatever, that there's a whole plan in place. Like that's not how he operates. It's just not. Oh, it's just master plan with the economy. Like. No, not really. Just has an idea, somebody proposes an idea, thinks it's a good idea, gets committed to it, goes and does it, even if it may contradict an idea. He Had a couple weeks ago. And I think that's what's at play here with the Kelsey's, is she probably always wanted to do it, right? And everybody's always, why don't you ever do that podcast? Why don't you ever do a podcast? Like, we only see you guys taking pictures in a club or at a concert or a football game. Like, podcast. It's just a conversation. It's super. Like you've talked people into being a podcast. Like, I don't know. And then you get. The dates arrive, hey, let's do it now for the season to get out of the way. And we'll just talk and we'll, you know, talk music, talk some football, let people know who we are, and that's it. Is there. Is there a benefit to the Kelsey's? Yes. Is there a benefit to her? Yes. But I. And I could be wrong. And maybe it's because I believe in the good in people first and foremost, that I don't think everybody has some master plan on how to manipulate likes and how to manipulate downloads and what it means for your music career. Like, she's a billionaire. She's the most popular female artist in the country, period. Stop. He is a multi time super bowl champion, a Pro Football hall of Famer. Like, they don't need much more. They don't need even attention, but it's just their way of. Like, people probably don't think she likes hers into football. You watch that, you listen to that and you understand that she's doing what every great partner should do, which is she's fallen in love with what her partner does. That's what it comes down to. I became like a person who was.
AZ Fudd
Running through the halls of my house screaming, we drafted Xavier Worthy.
Jake Hofer
And my friends are like, what is. Who body snatched you? This is. This is.
AZ Fudd
What do you mean? We drafted Savior Worthy.
Noah
I forget where I was, but you.
Devin
Were the first person to tell me.
Noah
That in the draft. No, I was screeching.
Jake Hofer
I couldn't believe it. I was freaking out.
Noah
We're talking about like, I'm like, wait, did she. She write I got to look this up? I'm like, she. Did she get the wrong information here? But yeah, we traded up.
Jake Hofer
Yeah, you know, I will. I'm gonna just hop in one thing. This is where you're like a real person. I like when you. When you superstars are real people. She said it's Xavier, but she says Xavier, right. It's like a personal pet peeve. But for whatever reason, it's Charming because it makes her seem like a real person that she has. There are things about her that aren't.
Devin
Perfect and that she's learning.
Jake Hofer
Yeah.
Devin
You know, like. So it's a mistake. That's okay. Not a big deal. And yes, I thought that was. I thought it was. I thought it was great as well. And it wasn't a pick that was. Or a news item that was so obvious. There was a little bit of. Of nuance in it or a little bit of inside that you'd have to be a Chiefs fan to really get excited about.
Jake Hofer
We're talking about COVID two, cover four, Cover zero, man.
Noah
Cover.
AZ Fudd
We're talking.
Jake Hofer
We're learning. I continue to learn.
Devin
Maybe somebody else that even knows what those coverages are.
Jake Hofer
Yeah. I'm not ready to be an analyst right now. That's been.
AZ Fudd
Yeah, give me 16 months.
Jake Hofer
Yeah, that's. That's. He's been on his iPad and they've been sitting there at home and he's watching and she wants to know. I think it's awesome.
Kerry Rhodes
Something. Something tells me that he has been doing the same thing. Like, I. I reached Taylor Swift and Kelsey fatigue way early into this, and I've almost come around. I was very interested to watch last night. I'm very. I was very impressed or startled, surprised by how genuine they are. They're like two giddy teenagers. I love love. I like watching love. But I also think that he reciprocates that because he's had us fooled this whole time into thinking that he loves her music. I thought. I thought he was just saying it to be a good boyfriend. But I think he also likes her music, which goes a long way with me because I don't like her music at all. It does nothing for me. It's not for me. It's for teenage girls. But he seems to. Just as she has dived into the football, I think he's actually embracing her music, too, which is a surprise to me.
Jake Hofer
Stan Patrick show here on fox portrait, the iHeartradio app. Go ahead, Dan.
Devin
I don't. Yeah, I do think her music is for everyone, not just for teenage girls.
Noah
It's just.
Devin
Jason may not like it. I will say that I thought Travis. Travis felt like the third wheel at times because I think he's used to him. Him and his brother going back and forth, but understanding that this was Taylor's opportunity, that he, you know, was going to let her shine and would sprinkle in things. But it wasn't a back and forth. It was a back and forth between really Jason and Taylor. And I thought Jason did a really good job. And I know that there's some editing that's done, but it's not. It's not sneaky editing at all. You know where the cuts are, you know where the places where they've. They've stopped and started again. But Jason asked this question to her, which I thought was great, and I give them credit. Jason just asked, how did it work when you were trying to get your masters back? Like, can you tell me the difference between what, you know, our publishing rights and what aren't? And she laid it out for him, and it was like a real music interview. And she explained of, like, what she could do and what she couldn't do and why it was important for her to get those master recordings and why it may not be for every single artist. And I actually thought that that part of it, aside from them promoting and talking about their relationship, was actually an informative part of the podcast.
Jake Hofer
Yeah, it was. It's. Look, I. I think it's fascinating to. To understand. To have people understand a business that they never understood before. Right. I've had that conversation with a buddy of mine about masters and about selling them and about holding on to him. And so when I heard that part, I was. I was intrigued, but I did know a lot of it. I, again, I just thought. I thought it was a win, but it wasn't set out. They didn't set out to win, right? They didn't set out to win. They just set out to. I want to do a podcast. Let's do it. That's how it felt. It felt very natural.
Devin
There is. There is something that I do think is. I don't contrived as such a negative connotation, but Travis is on the COVID of gq. I mentioned this earlier, but Jason, at the start of the podcast, Jason Kelsey said, we told you where we were. We were going to be back August 27th. Instead, we've got a surprise. We're going to do this August 13th. Obviously, that dropping helps Taylor, maybe helps GQ helps Travis. But Travis, within this GQ article, talked about how his play over the last couple of years slipped. And he says that he let his media responsibilities, doing an FX show, hosting a game show on Amazon, he let those things get in the way of his play. Now, yesterday, Doug, after your show, I was in with Kerry Rhodes on Cavito and Rich, and Kerry was an all pro and spent eight years in the league. Says, I just think he's lost a step. I don't think he has it anymore like he once did. And I think this is all cover up and hearing what Kerry said. And I didn't necessarily disagree with Kerry. In the podcast that aired last night with Taylor, Travis talked about traveling the world and said that in. Taylor brought up the point that Travis had talked about going to different countries. And Taylor's like, yeah, well, hello, I am going on a tour. We can go to all of those countries. And so that's what they did in the summer of 2024. Travis was with her in Europe during those spots or going to different places. That wasn't mentioned in the GQ article of the focusing on football. And by the way, it would be okay. Travis Kelsey's accomplished enough in his NFL career. He doesn't need to play another down. He's going into the, into the hall of Fame. But it was interesting to me to hear him say that his TV stuff took him away. But the relationship stuff with Taylor and being in Europe and doing these different things were not a reason on why maybe his play slipped last year, which you disagree with. I just don't know how it helps. You know, like I was when he was Argentina.
Jake Hofer
Yeah. Two years ago.
Devin
Yes. During the bye week. I just thought, that's crazy. The big joke is the NFL is now like, we'll just go to South America once a year. We'll just, we'll, we'll go there too. So maybe it looks a little bit normal. But I didn't think that that was the great move for Travis and preparing for the Chiefs. They ultimately go on and win the Super Bowl. So it didn't have an effect. But again, none of this has an effect and it's okay if it did. He's at the end of his career. But it's just, it's never brought up as maybe a reason on why not the relationship, but just the stuff that comes with the relationship. You're in a different phase of your life, a different part of your life. But he pointed out, singled out the TV shows, but nothing in terms of the travel that he may have done with his girlfriend.
Jake Hofer
I would, I would say this that inevitably, inevitably there will be some form of negativity towards it. Right. There always is. And here's how I would take that negativity, because it's, it's not, I don't think it's going to be anybody who matters. I think it'll be the, the bots or the fingers on social media that matters. But remember, in order to watch this or listen to this you have to seek it out, right? You have to seek it out. So you can say, I don't care about them. Okay, well, then don't listen and don't watch. It's fine. No big deal. Like, they'll be. They'll be fine. So if you say, hey, I watched, I listed one, I think it'd be really hard to come away and think, not a real relationship. It's pretty much impossible. And two, they both seem really likable because Travis does suddenly take a backseat, which I think he probably likes, right? He's always been the center of attention. Now it's kind of cool to have a girl that's sort of attention. Like, that's. That's dope. Like, he can just kind of. He just got to be the arm candy. And then three, like, again, the most important thing, when somebody says, like, dude, I listen to that podcast. Wait, so you sought out that podcast, downloaded it, listen to it, and then you're like, yeah, I'm not into them. Like, okay, that's. You just. You want the attention that you think they're trying to get.
Devin
Here's where I don't think it's going to backfire on him or in any way or it's going to matter, is if he plays well this year, then he's right. And all the work that he's done with a speed and agility coach work this off season. And guess what? It was the TV shows. Travis identified the problem and addressed it. And if it doesn't work and if he has another down season, he's just old and his better days are behind him. I don't think that this is going to come up. And again, I don't think it matters. I don't think it's a big deal. But it's just funny because it sounds a little hypocritical by Travis to say it was the TV shows and my attention to that as opposed to being away for a month and traveling throughout Europe.
Noah
I thought.
Kerry Rhodes
I thought it took, like, balls for him to admit that and for him to admit it on gq. It wasn't like a sports mag, per se, or a sports article or a reporter, but it took balls. And I think that only a guy who's had his career already could say I was distracted last season as my team was trying to win a third straight Super Bowl. Doug, you talk about the negativity and the bots and everything. I think a Chiefs fan would have an actual grievance to be like, wait a minute, you're admitting to being distracted as we were trying to set history last year. What's going on here? And I think Kerry Rhodes is probably right. I think that's his way of not admitting that he's lost a step. But I think it takes balls. And it's almost refreshing to hear a guy actually admit, I was distracted. How many athletes through the years, including LeBron James, have said there's nothing to that? It's always about the basketball. Everything else is side sidebar. Travis Kelsey actually admitting this, I think kind of puts him out there for criticism, don't you think, Doug?
Jake Hofer
I do. Again, I didn't hear the entire podcast. So did. Were the TV shows he's talking about last year or he's talking about in previous years? Because he did the big reality show he did was like, yes, 10 years ago, whatever. More than that. I was about 10 years ago. I was at CBS at the time and where he dated 32 women in the off season. I thought that's what he was referring to. Not to last year.
Devin
No. So he didn't mention any of the TV stuff in the podcast with Taylor yesterday in the New New Heights episode? It was in the GQ article where it was pointed out the FX show and the show that he did on Amazon that those were the shows because guess there's multiple episodes with the Amazon show. And maybe I wasn't familiar with the FX show, but those were specifically pointed out as. As shows that he did the.
Jake Hofer
Was it. What is it something Kelsey keeping? Kelsey. I forget what it's called on the Amazon show, which was. It's pretty good. You.
Devin
This is a different Amazon. It was. This was a different. This was like a game show that he hosted that he ended up being the host. But the dating show that he did was. Yeah, that he wasn't alluding to that. That was a decade or something.
Kerry Rhodes
Are you smarter than a celebrity? Was the Amazon prime show. And I want to say his dating show is.
Noah
He.
Kerry Rhodes
Didn't he date a woman from every state? Wasn't it the Kelsey 50 or something stupid like that?
Jake Hofer
Something like that? Or was it 32? I. I can't remember. Wait, so when was the.
Devin
When was the game shows chasing Kelsey? I think that game show was last. The last off season. 2024.
Jake Hofer
Okay, so last 50 women from 50.
Kerry Rhodes
States vie for the heart of a pro football player chasing Kelsey 2016.
Jake Hofer
Yeah. So nine years ago. I was. I was close. I was close in my ears. I remember I interviewed him like he was, you know, you talk about. You talk about a guy who you had, I had no idea would reach superstar status nine years ago. Think about how his life changed when Pat Mahomes became his quarterback.
Kerry Rhodes
We were at the Super Bowl. Maybe it was Los Angeles. I forget which Super Bowl. And Doug and I are prepping for the show, and all of a sudden I hear, hey, Doug, Doug. Somebody trying to get Doug's attention who's being walked by a publicist the other way. And I look over, it's Travis Kelsey trying to get Doug Gottlieb's attention as he's walking.
Jake Hofer
Because we used. He used to come on all the time and we talked basketball because he played basketball at Cincinnati. And we had some like, mutual, mutual friends. And you know, again, to go from that. I have his number. I've never. Haven't text him in years. I have no idea if he has the same number, if he'd even know who, you know, new phone. Who dis. But yeah, I mean, medio, like ridiculous. Ridiculous went from yeah, I know y to these in the names, you know, in the NFL, non quarterbacks. He's top five in any conversation. Correct?
Kerry Rhodes
Yes.
Jake Hofer
And then after this podcast and after, you know, now, obviously a long standing relationship with Taylor Swift, the most known by proxy. So. So that's. That's an unbelievable rise. Unbelievable rise.

The Dan Patrick Show: "The Best of The Dan Patrick Show" – August 14, 2025
Hosted by iHeartPodcasts and the Dan Patrick Podcast Network, this episode of The Dan Patrick Show brings together some of the most insightful and engaging discussions from recent broadcasts. Featuring guest appearances, in-depth analysis of current sports topics, and a touch of humor, this "Best Of" compilation offers listeners a comprehensive overview of the show's highlights.
Timestamp: 04:35 – 07:22
In this segment, Dan Patrick, alongside his co-hosts Devin, Jake Hofer, and guest Kerry Rhodes, delves into the current state of the WNBA. The discussion centers around Caitlin Clark, a standout player whose absence during the offseason has had significant repercussions for the league's visibility and popularity.
Dan Patrick highlights the timing issue:
"By the time she comes back and plays, football is being played and zero people care about the WNBA now." [04:34]
Devin agrees, pointing out the lost promotional opportunities:
"The one woman that drives ratings to the sport isn't playing all summer..." [05:00]
Kerry Rhodes offers a counterpoint, suggesting that while it may appear disastrous for the WNBA, it could be a net positive for Caitlin Clark's personal brand:
"Maybe a disaster for the WNBA, but net positive for Caitlin Clark is." [06:28]
The conversation underscores the delicate balance between individual star power and the overall promotion of women's leagues.
Timestamp: 07:09 – 16:57
A significant portion of the episode is dedicated to analyzing Shador Sanders, a fifth-round quarterback pick for the Cleveland Browns. Hosts and guest Mark Dominick, a former general manager, dissect Sanders' performance and off-field behavior.
Jake Hofer raises concerns about Sanders' demeanor:
"This is not how quarterbacks are played in the NFL. It's very much like a political position where you got to rally everybody behind you." [07:10]
Devin emphasizes the impact of Sanders' extra behaviors during preseason:
"He came in with his own soundtrack during a preseason game. I just didn't think so." [04:44]
Mark Dominick provides an industry perspective:
"Sanders was a complete jerk in these meetings. Nobody wants entitlement on a sports team, especially from a fifth-round draft pick." [11:01]
Devin critiques the portrayal of Sanders as a victim:
"I think he's trying to be the victim here, but that's just the fan base trying to do that." [15:10]
The analysis concludes that while Sanders shows potential on the field, his off-field attitude may hinder his long-term prospects in the NFL.
Timestamp: 23:10 – 33:41
The show navigates through various quarterback situations in the NFL, including Caleb Williams in Chicago, Jordan Love in Green Bay, Matt Stafford in Los Angeles, and J.J. McCarthy.
Noah discusses Caleb Williams:
"If he plays consistent, Caleb Williams was starting quarterback this year and probably next year, no matter what." [29:02]
Mark Dominick shares insights on Jordan Love:
"I like where the Packers are. I believe in Jordan Love, and I think that he's got a chance to take his game to another level." [31:10]
Noah analyzes Matt Stafford's situation with the Rams:
"They know that next year's draft, they've got to do something at that position. I think they're being safe with him." [32:23]
Noah also touches on J.J. McCarthy's performance:
"From what it feels like, I think they're in a good spot." [29:36]
This segment provides a comprehensive overview of the quarterback landscape, highlighting both opportunities and challenges faced by these players and their respective teams.
Timestamp: 33:41 – 36:10
The discussion shifts to James Cook's four-year contract extension with the Buffalo Bills and its implications for the running back market.
Jake Hofer critiques the deal:
"It's a meh deal at the running back spot where it's good money to the average American, but in the running back market, it's actually lower." [34:16]
Noah explains the contractual nuances:
"James was trying to get 16 to 18 a year, but the Bills were not providing that." [34:16]
Jake Hofer adds perspective on market trends:
"With the salary caps jumping, the recent extensions continue to push that market going down." [36:10]
The analysis highlights the stagnant valuation of running backs despite their on-field performance, suggesting a need for market reevaluation.
Timestamp: 41:33 – 56:57
A standout moment from the episode features discussions about Taylor Swift and Travis Kelsey's joint podcast appearance, exploring their relationship and its impact on their public personas.
Jake Hofer muses on the authenticity of their relationship:
"They didn't set out to win. They just set out to do a podcast... it felt very natural." [47:22]
Devin analyzes Travis Kelsey's performance and its potential reception:
"If he plays well this year, it’s not going to matter. But it's funny because it sounds a little hypocritical by Travis to say it was the TV shows..." [56:13]
Kerry Rhodes praises Travis for his candor:
"I think that's his way of not admitting that he's lost a step. But it takes balls to admit it." [57:59]
Noah discusses the genuine nature of their interactions on the podcast:
"Jason asked this question to her, which I thought was great... it was actually an informative part of the podcast." [50:01]
The conversation underscores the public's fascination with celebrity relationships and how they navigate personal and professional spheres.
Timestamp: 56:57 – End
Wrapping up, the hosts reflect on the discussions and offer projections for upcoming sports seasons, emphasizing the importance of player performance and team dynamics.
Devin believes Travis Kelsey's admission of distraction is a strength:
"If he plays well this year, then he's right... it's funny because it sounds a little hypocritical by Travis to say it was the TV shows." [56:13]
Jake Hofer encourages listeners to form their own opinions:
"If you say, hey, I watched, I listed one, I think it'd be really hard to come away and think, not a real relationship." [58:19]
Kerry Rhodes applauds the honesty of athletes admitting flaws:
"It takes balls for him to admit that and for him to admit it on GQ." [59:06]
The episode concludes with a positive outlook on how transparency and genuine interactions can enhance both personal and professional relationships in sports.
