Commercial Announcer (Electric Vehicle)
This one's actually a little awkward to read right now, but that's okay. This one's from Todd Fritz, by the way, sitting to my right. Putting Together a starting 5 of all transfers is smart or dumb. I think that was answered last night because, let's see, 66% of the audience say that it's very smart, obviously evidenced by lesson.
Dan Patrick
Okay, do I have to start the interview with Dusty May apologizing for Todd? Yes, Paul, it can't be dumb.
Commercial Announcer
He just won the title.
Commercial Announcer (Electric Vehicle)
It's just proof of concept right there.
Dan Patrick
That's how you do it. Todd had a problem with this this morning. I go, it's recruiting. Whether you're recruiting somebody who's 22 or somebody 18.
Dusty May
And we're conveniently leaving out that at
Jalen Rose
the top it says these are polls that might not quite work. Was the headline of those.
Dan Patrick
Let's bring Christy May, the Michigan head basketball coach. Good morning, coach. Congratulations. And I apologize for Fritzi saying that, you know, bringing in all these transfers is dumb. We're proud of what you did. Congratulations.
Dusty May
No worries, Dan. Thank you for having me on.
Dan Patrick
How much sleep are we working with?
Dusty May
About an hour. And I think I closed my school out five minutes a little bit ago in between interviews.
Dan Patrick
What kind of party did we have
Dusty May
last night as soon as we got back to the hotel? And our staff kind of has a semi tradition where if we have any big moments, we walk back from the arena to the hotel. That's just kind of our Rat Pack entourage moment. And we came to the hotel at what we thought was a small get together. It was several hundred people, and it felt a little bit like prom, where you're taking pictures and shaking hands and whatnot. But it was great just to see everyone under one roof.
Dan Patrick
As it hit you yet?
Dusty May
No, not at all. I'm not sure that it will.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, I'm guessing. Yeah. I don't know what, like, there's no more games. So is it. Is it just going to hit you out of nowhere and you go, I'm a national champion.
Dusty May
Well, Dan, I think once we have our roster put together for next year. I've been on calls and zooms already this morning. The transfer reporter transfer portal opened again at 12:01 last night. And we have some holes in our roster that we must fill and so credit our staff. They hold me accountable and they've had some stuff set up this morning, so we've been hitting the ground running.
Dan Patrick
Were you working the transfer portal after Winning the championship when you guys are celebrating.
Dusty May
We actually contemplating doing a Zoom at 12:01, how much media we were going to have and how many hours that would take. I think it was about 2 o'. Clock. And I said, are we still doing a zoom? And the staff said, no, that, that, that. That ship passed. And so we just waited till this morning.
Dan Patrick
Take me into halftime. Got a small lead. But what is your message to your team?
Dusty May
Our message was that things weren't going great. We weren't making shots. Yaxel was frustrated with his play, and we were at four points against a team that is conditioned to win as any team that we faced in the last couple of years. And so we were optimistic that if we found a little bit of offensive rhythm, then, then we could find least tie or, or lose by no less than three the, the second 20 minutes.
Dan Patrick
And I brought this up a couple of times yesterday, that unless you've shot in a big arena and the depth perception, it's really hard to get acclimated to that. And this was one of the worst shooting percentages for a national title game we've had in a long, long time. How much of a role do you think it played that you're playing in, you know, these cavernous stadiums now?
Dusty May
Well, we shot the heck out of it on Saturday, so we felt good about preparation. I think it had more to do with, with, with UConn's defense, the physicality game, and just two determined basketball teams that were fighting tooth and nail just trying to figure out a way to win. And they did a great job of, of controlling the tempo of the game, of forcing us to play at their pace, and they had us in a rock fight.
Dan Patrick
Any added. I don't know what the word would be that you did it in Indianapolis after, you know, being in Indiana under Bob Knight.
Dusty May
Well, it's actually probably a little bit more distracting because we're trying to accommodate a lot more people because of proximity. But just as I've said repeatedly, it's just a full circle moment. As a young kid, my mom would bring me up to these clinics at the Final Four, the yes clinics, and these basketball clinics where the college coaches back then were actually working stations and teaching us how to shoot and dribble the ball when we're in elementary school. Things have changed a lot in that regard. And then also in 2000, a group of us managers came up here because we could commute and just we were trying to network and meet any coach to make any connection that we could to find a Way to gain a spot in college basketball in literally any spot. Volunteer gas. Those are the jobs we were looking for.
Dan Patrick
He's Dusty May, Michigan head basketball coach. But you survived Bob Knight and thrived. But you survived. But give me your. Your Bob Knight. We. I mean, I had my moments with him, good and bad. I've been yelled at before by him, but I'm sure you have as well. So your favorite Bob Knight story as a student manager is what?
Reggie Miller
There.
Dusty May
There are several. Probably my favorite one. Now, I could tell this because coach has passed, God rest his soul. Our job was so menial that his wife Karen, wanted to have more grass in their backyard at their house in Ellisville. And Coach Knight refused to cut down any trees. And so coach was on a fishing trip or recruiting trip, I can't remember now. And we got a call from Karen that a couple of us were subpoenaed out to the house, and we had. We had no. No idea what for. And I don't know why. This story just came to me. I've never told it before. And we go out to the house, and she had had several trees removed all the way down to the. To the stump or to the ground. And we had to figure out a way to get the sawdust and any. Any residue from those trees out of the yard before Coach Dyke came home. So we literally had rakes and we were picking up sawdust with our bare hands, so wouldn' hopefully wouldn't notice that any of his trees have been removed while he's on a. On a hunting trip.
Dan Patrick
Jay Billis was on last hour, and he said to ask you about the different drinks and food that Coach Knight like. Like Dr. Pepper lemonade?
Dusty May
No, Dr. Pepper and chocolate milk. This is.
Dan Patrick
Oh, no.
Dusty May
Coach Knight was ahead of his time in many regards with analytics, with teaching pedagogy, but this was chocola before chocolate or Yahoo. It had soda taste with a. With a chocolate milk flavor. And it was. It was ingenious.
Dan Patrick
Take me back to last year when you tried to put this team together and you're trying to do it with players all over the country. So give me. Give me the recipe for that philosophy of what you were doing.
Dusty May
Yeah, well, we take the job at Michigan, and the first day I arrive on campus, there's maybe six. Six or seven guys in the locker room, and almost the entire team had already entered the transfer portal just because of the timing of these. These. And my first call was to Coach Howard to find out who he felt like was worth investing in as we tried to build our program and continue the legacy of the past teams.
Dan Patrick
But you don't take it personally, Dusty, that you go in and you realize most of the team is in the transfer portal.
Dusty May
No, not at all. Not at all. I wanted to get to know those guys. I wanted them to get to know me. And even the players that we identify are guys that we, we would love to keep. We tell them, don't make any rash decisions, just give us some time and let's get on the court together, let's spend some time, let's go have lunch and. Because these college years are, I mean, a lot has been said about the portal and all this other stuff that 18 to 23, 18 to 22 are such informative years for any of this that have changed as much as I did at that stage. And so we just want to make sure it's the right fit at the right stage of their careers and their development. And so there's. We never take it personal. And so we decided to try to keep several of them. And finances, we didn't have hardly any money. Finances wouldn't allow us to keep very many. And then luckily, Vlad golden chose to join us from fau. And shortly thereafter we got Danny Wolfe because of his family connections to Michigan and his desire to play at the highest level in preparation for the NBA coming from Yale. So we had a couple foundational pieces, a couple returners from the previous Michigan group, the Head Institute. And from there we're able to build out and really set an identity and culture in year one.
Dan Patrick
Is Michigan a football school or a basketball school?
Dusty May
It's an everything school, but I have issues saying that football is incredibly important at Michigan. There's 110,000 people that gather on our campus every single Saturday to watch high level football, to celebrate everything that comes with the University of Michigan. And we've piggybacked on that. Our, our first game at Michigan, there's probably 3,500 people, and I can't remember the last played in front of a crowd that wasn't a sellout. And they didn't bring great energy. So people love the university. They obviously appreciate a certain style of play as far as tenacity and teamwork. And so we're proud to be in a place where they celebrate all sports.
Dan Patrick
What's the sweatshirt? What's the logo on your sweatshirt?
Dusty May
It's the throwback Wolverine.
Dan Patrick
Oh, okay.
Dusty May
Yeah, it's the, the old school.
Dan Patrick
Did you get advice from the Fab Five? Did they want to help you with coaching?
Dusty May
Actually, they've been, they've been very, very helpful. And I, I've told them and I've told the media that other than Michael Jordan in my lifetime, they've changed the culture of our sport for the better more than any other team, group or individual. And it's, it's, it's a, it's a, a point of pr. Represent those guys. I was actually on a show with them the other day and they put me on the spot. They asked me which Fab 5 was my favorite and I, and being an Indiana guy that always loved the Pacers, I had to go with Jalen.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, he'll be joining us next hour.
Dusty May
Yeah, that's great. He's a lot for Detroit. He's, he's very, he's very respected in our area.
Dan Patrick
You know, sacrifice. You know, the voice, it looks like it's gone for a little while, so hopefully you get some time to recon. You sound a little like Tom Izzo. That's a seasoned voice.
Dusty May
Yeah, that he, he said that he set the standard for all of us young coaches as far as porn pouring into the, to our guys in our sport. And yeah, it's. My voice doesn't carry well normally and especially after a game like last night.
Dan Patrick
Congrats, Dusty. It's a great story and good luck.
Dusty May
Thank you, Dan. I appreciate having you on.

Learn more@electricforall.org Jalen Rose part of the FOB5. He is recently recently launched Same Page Entertain, which he'll talk about as he gets ready to sit down. He was watching the title game from his hometown of Detroit. How you feeling today about your Wolverines?
Jalen Rose
I feel like a national champion. Dan, it's always great to see you enjoying the show. You a legend. You know how much I love and appreciate you and value everything you brought to the game over the years on all. In all aspects. So always an honor to be on the show, and it's a great day to be a Michigan Wolverine. As a Detroit kid, the Pistons had a number one seed. We're going to get Cade Cunningham back for a playoff run. Just won the national championship in football a couple of years ago. Now we win it in basketball this year. I'm so happy for Dusty, man the squad. It's a perfect day to boss up.
Dan Patrick
How will history remember this Michigan team as national champions?
Jalen Rose
You know, being a quote unquote football school and, you know, the team has won 12 or 13 national championships and has 120, 20,000 people at the game every Saturday. You know, that's just going to be the standard. But there have been times, even when we were in college as the Fab Five, where Desmond Howard was also winning the Heisman Trophy. And so that's an expectation. When we say leaders and best, that's a real thing at Michigan. And so there is a level of pride and excellence in, you know, not only being great at basketball, but being great at all of what we do.
Dan Patrick
Who was bigger on campus? Big men on campus, Fab Five or Desmond Howard?
Jalen Rose
Well, it's not fair to Desmond because it was five of them. We could be in a lot of places at a lot of times.
Dan Patrick
The way that coach built this team, I don't know if this is the future, but you know, that, that makes it even more amazing is you're kind of taking pieces from all over the. All over the world and going, I can. I can put this puzzle together and have a magical run. Is this how teams are going to try to build their rosters in the future?
Jalen Rose
Absolutely. You saw Indiana do it in football this year, what's considered a basketball school. And all of a sudden, you know, they have a team of 23 year olds and they win, you know, the football. College Football Playoff this year. And so for Dusty May, though, I think. I think he has the ability to do both, and that's what I really like about him. But in this case, turning the team around in two years, you bring in Yaxel Lindenboard, Big Ten player of the Year from uab and then you bring in Cadeau, who was at unc, and Morrow, who's at ucla. So a lot of moving parts. Mahrez Johnson, he was at Illinois, you know, and then the school invest in the team. You know, you put up the nil money, you create the budget, and all of a sudden Dusty puts his fingertips on it and becomes magical. And they did it. Terrific job, and they were the best team all season. And I was telling this to Jamal Mashburn about Arizona and how they were a great team, but, you know, I felt like they were a little handicapped because they didn't make the three.
Dan Patrick
The altcast with the Fab Five. How much fun was that?
Jalen Rose
Like college kids really. And. And it was really awesome because a lot of people may or may not recognize. That's really the third time since 1993 we've been in the same place at the same time. And one of them was early 2000s at my celebrity charity game I did in Chicago. Another time was when Michigan played in the finals against Louisville. And then one time when Juwan was coaching, we got a chance to go to a game in Ann Arbor. So, you know, to be back with Ray Jackson, Jimmy King, Juwan Howard and C. Webb and break bread and tell stories. It was a great opportunity for CBS and TNT and TruTV to bring us all together. And the fans seem to really enjoy it and probably will do more in the future.
Dan Patrick
What makes a team famous?
Jalen Rose
The public. It's almost like giving yourself a nickname. Initially, we didn't want to be called the fabfi. We wanted to be called five times because as a. A fan of music, I knew that that was the Beatles. And then of a. A fan of rap, I knew that was Fab 5 Freddy. And so we didn't want to be called the Fab Five. But then the public wins out. And I'm glad the public was right. It's the exact same thing with the, you know, the impact you have on people and on the game speaks for itself. And so they determine all of that.
Dan Patrick
How much would it have cost Michigan in NIL when Fab 5 was coming to Michigan?
Jalen Rose
So here's the difference, as I learned just covering the game this year with, you know, Adam left coach Jamal Mashburn and Bruce Pearl is not only would we had the pay for play opportunity, which most players are taking advantage of, which is why you see so many players moving around, but we actually sold merchandise. Jerseys, shorts, socks, shoes, huaraches. Like we actually sold merchandise and helped with enrollment, help with the popularity of the school. So couple that with, you know, pay for play and nil money, we would have made some pretty pennies.
Dan Patrick
Talking to Jalen Rose, a member of the Fab Five, of course, longtime NBA player as well. Tell me what Same page Entertainment. What are we diving into?
Jalen Rose
Multimedia. Detroit based. And I partner with Tom Gores, a good friend of mine for the Detroit Pistons. And we really bonded over our community work and wanted to give back to, you know, his hometown, the Flint Mine of Detroit, but also just the state of Michigan. Just highlight a lot of voices and talent and in all types of spaces. Whether it's docu series. We have the number one show out right now to be called Software is High. Make sure you check that out. We also have a project out right now called Meal Ticket that we're consulting producers with. It's on Amazon. So really it's going to be podcast, it's going to be multimedia, just creating quality content for the masses.
Dan Patrick
How many text messages did you get when Bam out of bio scored? 83.
Jalen Rose
You know, I probably, like the rest of the world, none of us was watching that game first off, so I didn't, I didn't know it was happening.
Dan Patrick
Right.
Jalen Rose
They were playing against the Wizards. Right. I didn't. I didn't know that was happening. But in context, you know, I want to give Bam a lot of credit for, for, for people who haven't played that. Just the endurance and the discipline it takes to do something consistently to get to that type of numbers. There. There's a. There's a reason why it hasn't happened in the history of the game, whether it's free throws and, yeah, it was a little funky at the end of the game when they were fouling and trying to get it for him. But if you think about it, it's no different. And I say this with all due respect. If, if the Cleveland Browns are trying to get Miles Garrett the sack record, they're going to try to help him make it happen at the end of the season, even if the team is playing for the playoffs. And so that's. That happens in sports a lot. A lot more than people realize. And so I was just happy for Bam. It's a terrific accomplishment. And I joked a lot because I feel like if he wasn't dating Asia Wilson, he wouldn't have never got there. So good for him.
Dan Patrick
Wait, why wouldn't he have got there?
Jalen Rose
Because I love her killer instinct and how she's been a multiple MVPN champion and she brings it every game. So I feel like She's a motivating factor for his approach to the game these days.
Dan Patrick
Okay, but now nobody's. Now people aren't going to text you and say, can you come on the show on the anniversary of Kobe's 81? You don't have to worry about that anymore.
Jalen Rose
Well, I think I knew the entire time that, you know, when you're playing against greatness, you know, Tom Brady's going to throw six or seven touchdowns in the game. But the reality that people always forget because people keep using the word record, Will actually has it at 100. That's the actual record.
Dan Patrick
Yeah.
Jalen Rose
And so again, rest in peace. Kobe lost him way too young, but it was. It's really an acknowledgment to Wilt's greatness as well, that he still has the record all of these years later.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, but as you said, I didn't guard Kobe the whole game. People made it seem like you're. You're the year. Nobody's bringing up anybody from the Wizards to say, man, this is going to stay with you because you guarded Bam out of bio when he had 83.
Jalen Rose
And I'll say this with humility. It's because Jalen has become a common name in the marketplace. And so you can attach me to it. There's nobody on the Wizards you can attach to it.
Dan Patrick
But isn't it amazing the number of players in the NBA with the name name Jalen? Is it like 28?
Jalen Rose
I'll tell you a secret. Not just the NBA, NFL, NCAA, and society at the. At the grocery store. And it's a blessing. And it's such a tribute to my. My late mom, who lost a handful of years, who combined my biological father James with my uncle Leonard, who took her to the hospital to give birth.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, Jalen. I mean, if I do the math,
Commercial Announcer
you know, Paulie, before 1992, it wasn't in the top 500 boys names in America. Then it went to 378 and 92 and got up to the top 50 ten years later.
Dan Patrick
All right, Shaq's up there too, isn't he? Is there anybody. LeBron's not up there.
Jalen Rose
So I got some fine print for those names. Shaq, LeBron, and Denzel, who all are all time greats at what they do. All of those kids are black. The one thing about the name Jalen is unisex is universal. Is it? It has no color lines or boundaries.
Dan Patrick
Are you sure they're not a lot of white guys named Shaquille?
Jalen Rose
No, I've never met one.
Dan Patrick
Paulie, would you have any, Would you check?
Commercial Announcer
Yeah, we're checking.
Dan Patrick
Check and see if there's a Shaquille right there out there. Hey, great to talk to you. Good luck with same page entertainment and congrats to your Wolverines.

Got a text message last night. Reggie says, hey, I want to lead off my segment talking about the UCLA women's basketball team.
Geico Commercial Announcer
Me.
Dan Patrick
I'm going. Okay, great. You filled out a bracket. Nobody else filled out a bracket. You filled out a bracket and you picked your alma mater to win the national title. That's not a big jump. What? Yes, it is a big.
Reggie Miller
No one had my. If you listen to. If you listen to the pregame of the women's championship, no one had ucla. Even though they only had that one loss all season long. It was all there. There you go. Thank you. I picked all four Final four, which wasn't a stretch. They're all number one. Okay, that was. That was a little easy. But. But look, we know the talk coming into the championship game. What happened with Geno and Dawn and South Carolina. This is going to be a motivating thing. My Girl said hold my beer. Hold on, hold on. That was. That was Beth. Belt. Belt to booty.
Dan Patrick
Come on. Congratulations.
Reggie Miller
Thank you.
Dan Patrick
Congratulations.
Reggie Miller
Let's give the ladies some love. I know you want to talk about Michigan in the middle of the. Let's give my lady Bruins Corey Close, Lauren Betts, Kiki Rice, Gabrielle Hopkins, Gianna Neepkins. Let's give these seniors some of. Because I want to tell people experience matters, seniors matter. And them having those six seniors, they scored every single point.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, I know.
Reggie Miller
Every single point came from seniors. I love that.
Dan Patrick
What stood out with Michigan's performance whether last night or in the tournament overall.
Reggie Miller
Oh my goodness. Their size.
Dan Patrick
Whoa.
Reggie Miller
That was like low key and NBA type team right there. Their size was unbelievable. It was so hard to score anywhere in the paint. Not only all season long, but it was highlighted in this tournament. Unbelievable size, shot blocking. But again, again, Elliot Cadeau. When you've got a guy that can run the offense, experience came over from obviously from Carolina, didn't have the best career there. But for whatever reason it changed once he got to Michigan. Confidence wise, Dusty may instill, maybe instilled that confidence in him. But when you've got a guy who can control the tempo, control the pace, be that, you know, the head of the snake along with that size, to me that's what stood out the most. Their defense and their size.
Dan Patrick
Your reaction to Michael Malone going to North Carolina was what good for him.
Reggie Miller
I was surprised that last year there were so many job openings in the pro game and he wasn't able to get one of them. And you talk about a basketball savant. I thought he got kind of railroaded when he was in Denver. This is a great job for him to kind of set pace and step back in life because NBA is go, go, go. I don't know how well the recruiting thing will be for him in nil and all that, but you're going to one of these blue blood type universities where I'm sure the bank will be open in terms of X's and O's in game management. He is one of the best. So it's. I think it's a great fit for him because now he gets the chance to kind of slow down a little bit as opposed to going 100 miles a minute in the NBA.
Dan Patrick
How involved do you think Michael Jordan is at Carolina with basketball?
Reggie Miller
I think he has a huge influence. I mean he's the most famous athlete. Their team is repped by Jordan Brand. So I'm sure he had a say in it. I'm sure, he did his due diligence. I'm sure he had his conversations with Michael Malone.
Dan Patrick
But does he resonate with a 17 year old?
Reggie Miller
They all wear Jordans.
Dan Patrick
Of course.
Reggie Miller
Everyone knows. Yes, absolutely.
Dan Patrick
But it feels like the 17 year old Kobe might resonate more with them than Mike. Mike, maybe. Maybe LeBron would resonate more than Mike would. Is that fair?
Reggie Miller
Yeah, fair enough. I could. Yes, fair enough. But at the end of the day.
Dan Patrick
But the parents. The parents would be like.
Reggie Miller
Parents love Michael.
Dan Patrick
Michael. Yes, Mike. Mike's on the call.
Reggie Miller
But the kids. Kids are out there buying Jordans. As much as I love the bronze, they're not saying, I want a pair. They'll want Kobe. They love Kobe's shoes, too. Kobe's has a huge following as well. So does LeBron. LeBron has a nice following. But in terms of shoe deals. Come on. Now we know.
Dan Patrick
And you have Jordans.
Reggie Miller
Why are you bringing this?
Dan Patrick
No, I was just curious because. Are you a sneaker?
Reggie Miller
Later in my career, I had Jordan.
Jalen Rose
Okay.
Reggie Miller
Later. Before I was just a regular Nike athlete.
Dan Patrick
Okay. Are you everyone else, Are you a sneaker head?
Reggie Miller
No, I'm not.
Dan Patrick
You never collected.
Reggie Miller
No, I have. I have quite a few of the Jordan brands, but I'm not like, I gotta get these. I'm not. I'm not die hard like some people are.
Dan Patrick
You know that I was watching Joker and Wemby, and it was a Saturday afternoon game. Oh, and it was so much fun to just watch that game because I love both of the players. But here is joker putting up 40 on the best defensive player in the game. And even there were shots where Wemby put his hands up like, I. I don't know what I can do with this. And you know, Wemby had a great game against Joker as well. SGA is winning the mvp, of course. But that was fun to watch. That was a late season battle. I don't know what was really at stake other than pride.
Reggie Miller
But I will say this. With the Lakers being hurt, I don't know if they can hold on to that. Number three seed. And the Denver Nuggets move up and get that three seed. How fun would that be? Knock on wood. They both handle their business in the first round.
Dan Patrick
Oh, my goodness.
Reggie Miller
And we get those two juggernauts in the second round, San Antonio. But let me say this too. Wimby was guarding Jokic for most of the game.
Dan Patrick
Yeah.
Reggie Miller
Jokic was not guarding Wimby for most of the game. See, that's the difference. And this is why I do Love Wimby. He takes on the challenge. It's my responsibility to stop the best player on the other team, which is Yokids. I'm going to take that challenge. And look, Jokic has put up 40 on a lot of great players, just not Wimby. So it's hard to say, oh, he dropped 40 on Wimby, the supposedly the best, best, you know, defensive player. That's his job. He's going to contest. He's going to go against the best player each and every night. I like that he's not dodging the smoke at all.
Dan Patrick
Oh hey, I acknowledge that I love Wemby. But Joker puts up 40 and own. He owns the team record against him and head to head matchup as well. He's the still the by far and away the best offensive player in the game.
Reggie Miller
Yes, I agree. But you and I, I think we're in sync on who will win mvp. I think that'll be SGA and them
Dan Patrick
having Wemby will win an MVP before Joker wins another one. Wemby's having a better year. I mean Joker's having a better year this year than he did in his MVP years.
Reggie Miller
But can I just say one thing, dude, the dude is averaging a triple double as a center. He's leading the league in a, in assists and rebounds and he's a top five scorer. And he won't win mvp.
Dan Patrick
No, he's not.
Reggie Miller
I mean think about what we're saying here.
Dan Patrick
But if they had a better record, then he's winning the. That's what it comes down to.
Reggie Miller
I, I think this year SGA is putting up incredible numbers. But I think what will tilt towards him will be the overall number one seed once and again this is coming off having the best record, going deep in the playoffs, going to seven games, winning finals mvp. And oh, by the way, you come back what, two months later, maybe less than two months later and you're doing it all over again. Let's give SGA and the Thunder a lot of credit for doing that.
Dan Patrick
Absolutely. We're talking to Reggie Miller. I didn't give you the proper introduction. Let's see you.
Reggie Miller
No need, no need.
Dan Patrick
People know you got my Hornets at the Celtics coming up tonight.
Reggie Miller
Howard, look.
Dan Patrick
Who's your rookie of the year.
Reggie Miller
I'm still going with Khan, but what Cooper Flag has done over the last week or so, 51 and then I think 45 against the Lakers. That's great and all, but Khan and his team, every game means something. I mean they've had the second best record, I believe since January 22nd, only behind the Spurs. And if you look at their starting five, LaMelo, Brandon Miller, Khan, Miles Bridges, Moussa Diabate, they're plus minus by far. Their starting five by far is superior than any other starting five since January 1st. This is one game and I'm glad we added it late in the season because when you watch the Hornets play, it's hard to kind of gauge their pace and their speed from television. So I'm curious because both of these teams tonight, they kind of are very similar. They both like to jack up a lot of threes. They live behind that three point line. They both are great offensive reboundings team and they're both great defensively. And March 4, the Hornets came in to Boston and put a whooping on Boston. Now again, Tatum came back a couple weeks later and they went to Charlotte and won. Boston did. So this could be a very, very well could be a first round matchup as well. So I think there's going to be some messages being sent from both teams.
Dan Patrick
Okay. I think Cooper Flag should be the Rookie of the Year year. You're factoring in record for a rookie of the year award. We, we don't do that. We're doing it because that can tilt towards Con Cannipal. I think we're surprised at Knipple. We're not surprised at Cooper Flag. He plays on a bad team. Imagine being 19 years of age and everybody knows you're the guy who's going to have the ball and try to score and he puts up 51 and 45. I really don't think it's close. I love Knipple. I do watch the Hornets play games. But Cooper Flag is leading an entire team every single night. There might not be good, but everybody in the building knows we have to stop him.
Reggie Miller
All fair and valid points, but also too, you've got a dude who is not only leading the league but broke the rookie record with 265 and counting made threes. Just go back last year for the Hornets. They weren't in this position. Khan comes in and it helps that Brandon Miller has been helped, been healthy. He was hurt. It helps that Lamelo Ball has been healthy. But Con Cannibal has added something to this Hornets team. I don't think it's a runaway for Cooper to win it. Let's give Khan some credit. 265 made threes as a rookie. It's not like he's just jacking them up. And he has a terrible shooting percentage. He has added A lot of stability for this Hornets team.
Dan Patrick
Okay, I brought this up and I need you to bring it up next year. 50 years since the ABA merger.
Reggie Miller
Yes.
Dan Patrick
Okay. The Spurs.
Reggie Miller
You want me to bring it up on air like the red, white and blue ball.
Dan Patrick
Okay, here. Just hear me out. Next season. One game. Spurs, Nuggets, two original ABA teams. Old uniforms, red, white and blue ball. And you have ABA Night in the NBA. What do you think?
Reggie Miller
I absolutely love it. The only thing I would change in what you just said, it would have to be spurs versus the Indiana Pacers. What are you talking about? Three ABA championships. Roger Brown.
Dan Patrick
I'm okay with that. I'm okay.
Reggie Miller
We're going with the spurs and the Indiana Pacers. Adam Silver, if you are listening. Theodore and Reginald Aloysius Miller. We want ABA Night, Spurs, Pacers off bring. And the. The cheerleaders and. Oh yes, let's do it.
Dan Patrick
Okay, but can I get. Okay, who did the Nuggets got to be involved in this?
Reggie Miller
Is there still a only three ABA teams left that merged?
Dan Patrick
The Nets.
Reggie Miller
Yeah, but the Brook. Yeah, we could do the Brooklyn Nets.
Dan Patrick
And I want guys to wear afros too like 50 years ago. Maybe mustaches, goatees or whatever. Tight shorts.
Reggie Miller
Wouldn't you love to see Jokic just run out for the layup line just with a big old Dr. J throw.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, yeah, I'd like it. 50 year anniversary.
Reggie Miller
I hope they're listening to us. That's one game.
Dan Patrick
You got the pulpit, Reggie. You're on the call tonight.
Reggie Miller
Birds, Pacers. And we've got Nuggets, Nets.
Dan Patrick
Yes. Let's do it ABA Night standalone. Those four teams play and it's ABA Night next year during the regular season. You know what we'll call it the
Reggie Miller
Red, White and blue ball. That. That's Chef's Kiss.
Dan Patrick
Come on. And you know what we're going to call it? Throwback night.
Jalen Rose
Oh my goodness.
Reggie Miller
Okay, you're going a little too far.
Dan Patrick
You not. That's gold.
Reggie Miller
Look, I'm in for the warm up line. Wearing fake frozen. I'm in for all that.
Jalen Rose
Come on.
Dan Patrick
My God.
Reggie Miller
You're getting too gimmicky now. I like everything how we set it up.
Dan Patrick
Tight short night.
Reggie Miller
Yes, we do that. Yes.
Dan Patrick
Yeah.
Reggie Miller
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
We just promoted his tight short night. John. John Stockton will. John Stockton, the old blazer.
Reggie Miller
You know the. The big lapel blazer.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, yeah.
Reggie Miller
Oh, let's bring them back.
Dan Patrick
You could have Utah Jazz have the John Stockton shorts night night. And the Jazz dress up like John Stockton the way he played.
Reggie Miller
I'm staying out of it. John. We're cool, right?
Dan Patrick
John was just dirty to everybody. Not just.
Reggie Miller
Yeah, he was.
Dan Patrick
He was dirty. I can't argue he was dirty. Reggie will be on the call. Noah Eagle tonight, My Hornets against the Celtics. That's 8 Eastern on NBC. And Peacock. Thanks, Reg.
Reggie Miller
Appreciate you. Theodore Seaton. You may be leaving. You're not gone, but you will never be forgiven.
Dan Patrick
You were my God.
Reggie Miller
You and I started together in the trenches. We started together. You and I.
Dan Patrick
Wait, did you say he'll be gone but not forgetting but never forgotten.
Reggie Miller
Gone but never forgotten.
Dan Patrick
I was like, what is forgetting?
Reggie Miller
No, he's gone but never forgotten.
Dan Patrick
Forgotten. Okay, forgotten. Why are we yelling? I don't know. Thanks, Reg.
Reggie Miller
Love you.
Dan Patrick
Go, go. Shoot that regard.

This episode of The Dan Patrick Show centers on breaking down the aftermath of the NCAA Men’s Basketball National Championship, Michigan’s remarkable title run under coach Dusty May, and the rapidly shifting landscape of college sports. The show features high-profile guests: Michigan head coach Dusty May, former Fab Five star Jalen Rose, and NBA legend Reggie Miller. Discussions delve into Michigan’s team-building strategy, reflections on legendary college hoops figures, the impact of transfers and NIL in modern collegiate sports, as well as touchpoints on NBA rivalry, rookie races, and the evolution of basketball culture—all with Dan Patrick’s trademark humor and camaraderie.
“About an hour. And I think I closed my school out five minutes a little bit ago in between interviews.” (03:31)
“Whether you're recruiting somebody who's 22 or somebody 18.” (03:05, DP)
“We decided to try to keep several of them. And finances, we didn’t have hardly any money…luckily Vlad Golden joined us from FAU,” and how strategic selections and culture-building created Michigan’s new identity (10:17–11:42).
At halftime of the championship:
“Our message was that things weren’t going great. We weren’t making shots. Yaxel was frustrated…if we found a little bit of offensive rhythm…then we could at least tie or lose by no less than three.” (05:23)
Depth perception in big arenas and defensive grit played a big role:
“We shot the heck out of it on Saturday… I think it had more to do with UConn’s defense, the physicality…” (06:11)
“Dr. Pepper and chocolate milk. This was chocola before chocolate or Yahoo. It had soda taste with a chocolate milk flavor.” (09:16–09:39)
“It’s an everything school…but football is incredibly important at Michigan.” (11:46)
“Other than Michael Jordan…they’ve changed the culture of our sport more than any team, group or individual.” (12:46)
“I feel like a national champion…It’s a perfect day to boss up.” (18:03)
“There is a level of pride and excellence…not only being great at basketball, but being great at all of what we do.” (18:45)
"Turning the team around in two years...a lot of moving parts...the school invest[s] in the team, you put up the NIL money, you create the budget, and all of a sudden Dusty puts his fingertips on it.” (20:01)
The joy of Fab Five altcast during the tourney—only the third collective in-person gathering since 1993 (21:07).
On the fame of the “Fab Five” name:
“The public wins out…It’s the impact you have on people and on the game.” (21:58)
Reflects on how much NIL/merchandise the Fab Five would have banked in today’s environment (22:37).
“The one thing about the name Jalen is unisex, is universal—it has no color lines or boundaries.” (27:44)
“Let’s give my lady Bruins...experience matters, seniors matter. And them having those six seniors, they scored every single point.” (33:35)
“That was like low key an NBA type team right there...Elliot Cadeau...when you’ve got a guy that can run the offense, experience…that’s what stood out.” (34:18–35:12)
“He’s one of the best [coaches]…now he gets the chance to kind of slow down a little bit as opposed to going 100 miles a minute in the NBA.” (35:19–36:15)
“Yes, absolutely [Jordan resonates with players]. The kids are out there buying Jordans...Kobe's has a huge following as well. LeBron has a nice following. But in terms of shoe deals? Come on now.” (36:35–37:30)
Analytical breakdowns of Nikola Jokić vs. Victor Wembanyama (Wemby), SGA (Shai Gilgeous-Alexander) as MVP favorite, and the value of big games late in the regular season (38:00–41:18).
Rookie of the Year debate:
“[Khan] broke the rookie record with 265 and counting made threes...He has added a lot of stability for this Hornets team.” (43:50) “But Cooper Flag...imagine being 19 and everybody knows you're the guy..." (43:04)
Proposes (with Dan) celebrating the 50th ABA-NBA merger anniversary with "ABA Night"—retro jerseys, red-white-blue ball, Pacers-Spurs, Nuggets-Nets, and even tight shorts:
“We want ABA Night, Spurs, Pacers...bring the cheerleaders, the red, white and blue ball.” (45:13)
