And I kind of dressed as what I thought was a bad girl as a throwback to my 16 year old self. Because when I was 16 years old, there was this like really expensive boutique in Sandy Diego where I couldn't afford to shop there like some of the other like really Richy Richie girls, but they would let me clean the store after hours and I would get $10 in store credit to buy certain items from the store. And this was one of the shirts that I purchased with my store credit. And I thought it made me a bad girl because I obviously thought this was like a punk band or something really edgy that just was really gonna show, like who I was as the bad girl that I wanted. And when I got home, I'm like walking around the house, you know, my dad's like, what's up with the shirt? And I was like, oh, nothing. And he was like, you know who that is, right? And I was like, no. And he's like, that's Ricky Martin. And I was like, what? And he was like, that's a very gay man. And so I don't think that this shirt had the effect that I Thought it was gonna have, but Ricky Martin is on my shirt today and I haven't worn this in probably 10 years. But I busted it out for our guest because I think this is someone who isn't afraid, get a little dirty, be a little bad, but also has the good girl edge too to her. And she is multi hyphenate of our dreams. Stand up comedian, actress, voiceover artist. She does it all. And a friend that we. And was lent a normal thing for you to take part in?

You know, I love trying new things.

My girlfriend grew up catholic. I mean she, you know, this was.

Her first lent ever.

No, because I think Lent Yeah, I guess. At least full commitment.

We just decided, why not?

And you never, you never. You know it's only 40 days, right? Right. No one told you.

We could, we could be blacked out. You could be holding my hair.

Yes. Because, you know, usually when I'm drunk, I'm ordering Taco Bell at midnight.

But. And then you go to. Oh, this is actually gonna be one of my. We're doing, gonna do bitter and sweet of the week. My bitter is that I think I've been saying yes to too many events.

I think we're. I think it's getting a little much. But I usually, sometimes cause of my anxiety, I'll go and I'll like definitely have a cocktail and like a Tuesday. And then I wake up not feeling that great. And, and so you don't have that now.

I keep thinking about it. I'm like, I don't know. Cause I'm off alcohol. And then it's like, if you're abstinent, they're not gonna say, like, just have sex once. Well, and then go back to being abstinent. I mean, of course, you know, it all depends case by case. But I'm starting to think, like, maybe I won't have the glass of wine.

Speaking of abstinence, I. The last time I partake or partook in Lent was I gave up touching myself for 40 days.

And on the 41st day, I called up a guy I was in college, and I went to his house, and it. It wasn't as good as I thought it was gonna be. And I should have kept going. M. It actually wasn't. It was bad. Yeah.

Always been bisexual but, yeah, just, you know, I mean, not to get super deep, but when I booked the role of Alice on good trouble in 2018, I came out to my mom because this character that was queer and, you know, could potentially be a role model. I thought I had to, you know, spread my wings IRL and feel liberated in that way. So I had that conversation. Of course, the conversation was not overnight, but my mom has made so much progress since, and, you know, my girlfriend joined us at Cheesecake Factory, so life is good. But my point is, representation matters.

Because I got the chance to be in this show and portray this story. My conversation just within the community has opened up so much.

Well, and then on the topic of, like, good Trouble, did it feel good to be telling, like, a story and, like, like, making people think about a situation, especially with the LGBTQ community, of, like, you're actually contributing something positive to, like, the world?

What about In Good Trouble, for example? Did you get to do any crazy shit that felt actiony?

Ooh, you know what? First of all, I'm so grateful for Good Trouble because it was categorized as a drama. So I think some of my most powerful work as an actress was in season four of Good Trouble. Tell us the Margaret was in that season. Actually, no, she was in season three. But the storyline was kind of an extension because I go on tour with her in the show and then I get assaulted after a show and it was this, like unpacking this trauma, crying every episode and, you know, kind of.

[Dylan Mulvaney]

And you'd come from the standup world before that?

[Sherry Cola]

Yes. And I mean, it was just so layered, but it felt so liberating to express through the craft because I'd had also been like at a rock bottom kind of personal chapter in my life while filming it. Yes.

[Dylan Mulvaney]

Okay.

[Sherry Cola]

I was like in a, in a heartbreak scenario during this time. And the fact that I went to work and just cried every day, it was really therapeutic. Along with going to therapy irl. But yeah, it's buy one, get one free therapy, but essentially so.

But you were doing a lot of trauma stuff.

[Sherry Cola]

Like what I'm saying is like my dramatic skills on camera, I didn't even know I had until Good Trouble. Which is why, you know, your dreams are really limitless. You know, like before when I was doing radio, like that was the dream, like not even being on camera. And then I do comedy, you know, standup, and then I do comedic TV shows. And then now I'm doing dramatic stuff and then you know, yada, yada, yada. So I think you're so capable and it's society that kind of puts you in a box or, you know, wants you to settle for the bare minimum and then you, you like stretch that.

I, like, hid those. But then you're being like the shallowest sort of like, polished version of yourself, and that isn't going to get you. I don't think that's going to be good in the end.

Yeah. I mean, being a public figure definitely has its extra layer of the pressure or what we think are you people want every pleaser in real life? Definitely. You know, what would you say to Camille?

What I've realized is that most of the time people are not as mad that we don't attend something or as annoyed that you didn't do this for them. As we think we are overcompensating in our heads. Like, we are the ones going that extra mile because we are so terrified of being not liked that we actually make this up. They're fine if we don't go to their birthday. There's 45 other people who are we. If anything, it's us being full of ourselves, thinking, if I'm not there, there is no party. You know what I'm saying?

Like, that's what I realized. It's like when we're overly apologetic. Cause we've been there. Like, oh, my God, I'm so sorry I can't make it. And what's the reason, really?
