I like to talk about the ones that I think are wearable for most women in our regular everyday lives. These are Runway trends from the fall winter 2024 shows, so there are some that haven't really shown up yet. I think they might pop up in stores as the weather gets cooler, but right now I'm just focused on the next three months. Will all of the trends work for you? No. Will you like all of them? Probably not. Just take what works for you and leave the rest. But as you've probably heard me say a million times before, don't close your mind to new things. I was talking to our capsule creative director a couple weeks ago and we were joking about how we weren't sure about the mesh ballet flats in the spring, but we both love them now. Sometimes your eyes just need time to adjust to new looks or things that you have worn before that are coming back. You just got to get used to them again. So don't count anything out. Just say not for me, not right now. But being open to new things is a big part of style evolution and that will always help you from looking dated or getting stuck in a style time warp. Okay, with all that said, here are 10 trends from the runways that regular everyday women can work into their regular everyday wardrobes. Trend number one is what I'm calling charming accessories. We are seeing charms everywhere. Charm necklaces, charm bracelets, and on the Runway, it was all about bag charms. This is one of my favorite little trends of this season because I love opportunities to express your personality through your style. Now you can do the Trend for under $20 with a pre made charm necklace from Target. Or you can invest a little more and build a custom necklace with charms that represent things that are meaningful to you, like your kid's birthstone or your favorite pasta shape. Whatever you hold dear, you can put it on there. I also think bag charms are really fun this season. This is a great way to customize, elevate and update a basic bag. And you might be having flashbacks to like that big rabbit fur puffball we were hanging from our bags in the days of old a few years ago and those are still out there. If you love it, you have it. Use it. Great. But this season you can add a string of pearls or a mini enamel hot sauce bottle, a little leather horse or dog, or your favorite shape of pasta. I don't know what Google was trying to tell me when I was doing research for this episode. Either pasta shapes are very big for fall 2024 or or my search history heavily involves pasta. I don't know either way. Have fun with this one. It's an easy, inexpensive way to get in on a trend, show your personality, and maybe give new life to the things you already have. Trend number two is blazers. I know, I know. We've been talking about blazers and suiting for, I mean, it's years at this point, right? But, my friend, they're not going anywhere. Blazers are a fantastic way, I think, especially in the fall, to elevate your style and look more polished. Even if you don't have a life that lends itself to needing an actual suit, you can throw on a blazer with a tank and jeans and instantly look put together. The reason that I wanted to talk about this one again is that for a few seasons, we've been seeing mostly oversized, drapey blazers as the it thing, right? And while those are still out there and they still look current, this season a more tailored, refined, structured blazer is back. And this is good news for those of you who feel boxy or overwhelmed by all of the extra material. I love a trend that can easily work for anyone, and I feel like this fall the variety of silhouettes is a lot more diverse, so you can really participate in the trend regardless of your shape or the fit you like. We're also seeing more double breasted styles, blazers that are nipped in at the waist. There's actually one called an hourglass blazer, which be great for my hourglass girls. And the length is anywhere from cropped to longline. So again, whatever you feel best in, whatever style you like, it's out there this season and on trend now. If you've got a more relaxed blazer and you want to make it look a little bit more refined and fitted, throw a belt over it. Belts are another trend that are still going strong. That's not one of the official 10 trends, but consider it an extra. But they're still going strong in fall of 2024, and combining two trends will make you look even more current. This works best on blazers that aren't too thick or too oversized. But if you've got a blazer and a belt in your closet, just try it and see what you think. It's great over dresses or longer skirts or just jeans or trousers, you can really wear it anyway. All right. The third trend I want to share with you is sort of an extension of the refined blazer, and that is the English country aesthetic. What we're talking about here is tweeds, plaid, herringbone barn coats, knee high boots, lots of skirts, lots of neutrals, lots of layering. I think this is an easier trend to do as the weather gets cooler, you know, with the heavier texture and all the layering. And honestly, this trend is just a matter of personal preference and style. For me personally, just Jennifer as a person, going all in on this one feels very costumey. But I spend my weekends at the grocery store in suburban America, not a country house in the uk, So I feel like I would be playing dress up in it. But, you know, I could see borrowing a couple of elements here and there. Under this umbrella, I want to include the prep or varsity aesthetic, which is also trending this fall. Why isn't this a separate trend? Well, there are a lot of crossover elements like blazers, button up shirts, pleated skirts, knit sweaters. And for me, the biggest difference is that the traditional preppy aesthetic always has a bit of a nautical nod or vibe to it. More white and navy, less brown and cream, if that makes sense. I found a YouTube video that combined the two into a style called English prep. And that's what I'm going to put in the links on the show notes. And I think it's perfect. It combines those heritage colors, those heritage fabrics with a little bit more casual, modern styling from the preppy side of things. And I think the combination of the two is infinitely more wearable for most people. If you've listened to my show before, you know, I like to research what people are saying about any topic. I like to just get different perspectives and make sure I'm not missing anything. And my friend, oh my word. I stumbled across an in depth heated debate about the differences between English country and preppy aesthetics. And if I know about this debate, you have to know about it too. So I'm just going to read a part of it to you. Are you ready? Okay. This is what person number one said. Just my opinion, but there seems to be enough general crossover that I could call it preppy with a straight face. I'm sure many will disagree on some technicality, like it's too put together or it's. It's not historically exact because it only ticks eight of 10 boxes on the official checklist. Things thousands of miles apart tend to evolve in different paths, but still have a few common bonds like tweed Barbour Tartan, Land Rover, etc. And draw inspiration and aesthetics from each other. Next person says. You could make the argument that it's the UK version of preppy, but it's not. Preppy prep is culturally distinct and a wholly American invention, separate from the traditions and culture that spawned English country style. Next person. Technically, you know it's going to be good when it starts out with a technically or actually. But anyway, here's what they said. Technically, prep's a subset of Ivy, which originated within Ivy League universities. That style was then mimicked and modified by prep schoolers in the northeast of the US Spawning Prep. It then spread out into the larger cultural zeitgeist that spread effectively democratized preppy fashion. It wasn't reserved for the upper class anymore, with the American middle class rapidly adopting it. And a lot of the American middle class would be considered working class in the uk. Conversely, English countryside fashion has remained very much in the domain of the upper class and middle class. The English middle class is not analogous to the US Middle class, but that's a whole other discussion. Class structure is much more stratified and rigid in the uk, and as such, so is a lot of the fashion, particularly fashion that's seen almost exclusively as a purview of the gentry, such as English countryside. And then this is my favorite friends. Someone, a new person enters the chat and wraps it up with this. It's British people dressed like American people, trying to dress like British people, but through the lens of how Japanese people view American people. The end. Okay, I don't even know what that last part means. I felt like I needed to draw a diagram to figure that all out. My style circle, ladies, you know, when I say you're overthinking it, this is what I mean. English prep is a tweed blazer worn over a sweater and jeans with brown loafers. You do not need to have a country house or a prep school education to wear it. You can just go to J. Crew or Loft and just buy the outfit. Have fun with it. In the words of Michael Kors in season two of Project Runway, lighten up. It's just fashion. So, moving on, trend number four is what I'm calling statement necklines. On the runways, there were tons of really exaggerated funnel necks and turtlenecks and asymmetrical necklines. And this is one of the ones I think we're going to see more as the weather cools and real sweaters and coats start to show up. But in stores right now, what I'm seeing is mock necks and cowl necks. When I say cowl neck, I'm not talking about the sweaters. We've all worn with, like, that little waddle of fabric that looks like your turtleneck just gave up. No, these look more like a draped boat neck. Much more refined, much more polished. Will we see the other kind as the weather cools? I don't know. I kind of hope not. But for now, that's not what we're talking about right now. You're also going to find shorter funnel necks, kind of like a mock neck length that stands out a little bit away from your skin, like it's not tight fitted to your neck. I think these are great for fall transition because they give a little bit more coverage without being full turtleneck. Right. Keep in mind, though, as your neckline gets higher, your shoulders appear broader, and your bust appears fuller. Do with that information what you want. For some of you, that's a great thing. For some of you, it is not. So use it to reach your body shape goals. Trend number five is one of the color trends of the season. In general, I think there are much more dominant color trends this season than we've seen in a while. You probably know by now, but when we start the capsule guide process each season, we have each of our team members put together sample palettes based on what they're seeing in stores. And there's usually a lot more variety just within our team in what we each submit. Not this season. Nope. It was pretty easy to pick the palette because all of our palettes featured mostly the same colors. Some little variety, but it was pretty easy. One of the biggest color trends and a color that appeared on every single palette that our team members submitted was green. Fall 2024 green, olive green, forest green, sage, moss, avocado, pistachio, emerald. Everyone can find a green that works best for them because they're all out there. You know, I love a color trend because it's an easy way to work trends into your wardrobe. But remember that the more intentional your use of a color trend, the more current your outfit will read. So an olive dress is going to look more current than just an olive tee. An emerald suit will read trendier than an emerald blouse. And another way to up the trend factor with color is to choose a trending piece in a trending color, like a forest green funnel neck top. It's what I call the two for trend. Right. By the way, if you don't know what your best green is, I highly recommend reaching out to our pal, the color guru, for a color analysis. It is so much easier than trying to figure it out yourself. Are my veins green? Are they blue? I don't know. What's my undertone? I have no clue. But if you do this, if you get it done by a professional, forever and ever, you will know what shades to look for and maybe which to avoid. If you want to have your colors done, head over to YourColorGuru.com, use code everyday style to save 10% on any package. This will make style so much easier. Link is in the show notes. Okay, next one. Moving on. Number six, leopard print. This is back in a big, big, big way. Did it ever really go anywhere? Yes and no. You would see a piece here, there, but for the last few seasons, it has not been dominating. I think we needed a break from. From the cat prints. And this is, you know, they were there, but this is one of those things like colors that I just say is having a moment. It's not like leopard is new or novel, but this season, it's just everywhere in a big, big way. Just like with color, the more you wear, the trendier it looks. You can dip a toe in the trend with sneakers that just have a little leopard detail, or you can wear a leopard maxi dress, or you can do anything in between. I think accessories like shoes, bags, and belts are a good way to add a print in just little doses without feeling over the top. But again, if you want to be over the top, I support that you do you. If you've got leopard pieces hanging in your closet from a few years ago, I just want to caution you that styles have changed a lot since the last time leopard was really a thing. So while I always encourage you to use what you have, a leopard print swing dress from Old Navy paired with your classic denim jacket might read dated instead of trendy. I'm not telling you not to wear it. It's just something to be aware of. Trend number seven is denim on denim. Denim in all shapes, forms, washes, styles, silhouettes, whatever is still really, really big. So I don't have, like, that one piece you need for fall or really anything different to say about what's really new this season. But I want to focus on the styling, which is denim on denim. That is the denim trend to focus on right now. This is a look that's not new, but I still see women afraid to try it because they're not sure they're doing it right. So let me walk you step by step through how to do this trend effortlessly. You ready? Step one, put jeans on. Step two, put a denim shirt on. Ta da. You did it. Not so scary after all, right? I feel like back in the day, there was a lot of guidance and there were a lot of rules about how to do denim on denim. Right? It was about mixing weights and washes, like pair a lighter chambray shirt with dark wash jeans. And that's fine. You can do that if you want, but you can also pair light with light, dark with dark, medium wash with whatever you want. There are no rules you have to follow. Just put it on your body and if you like the way it looks, wear it. If you don't, change a piece and see if you like that better, that's all there is. And if you're still worried people are going to look at you funny, look at it this way. If you live in an area or have a social circle where this is already being done, you're good to go. Nobody is going to think anything about it. On the other hand, if people around you aren't doing the denim on denim thing yet, this is such an easy way to score some cool girl points. This is mainstream enough that people's eyes are used to it, so they're not going to think you're crazy. All they're going to think is, ugh, I wish I'd worn that. Or oh, I wish I could do that. Little do they know. It's so easy. Just go for it. If you try one thing this fall, let this be it. All right? In the show notes, the links I'm giving you are to denim shirts, but I've only included ones that show denim on denim on the model so you can get a little bit of styling inspo. Okay, Trend number eight is another denim trend, and that is beyond blue denim. Obviously. We have been seeing ivory gray, black white denim. Those are nothing new. But I have seen a lot of black denim jackets lately, which is a departure from all the shades of blue that we usually see. It feels like black denim jackets are sort of the update the trend of denim jackets this season. But we're also seeing non blue jeans coming back. I'm going to be honest, I have a little PTSD from all the rainbow colored skinnies I have seen in my career, and I'm not sure if I'm ready to go back. Not yet. I think that colored denim, meaning not black, blue, gray, ivory or white, can look really frumpy and has the ability to make you look older. In putting this episode together and looking at a lot of colorful jeans, I've discovered a couple of things that make these look modern and chic and not like you went shopping in the snowman sweatshirt section of Kohl's. Do you know what I mean? We've all been there and here they are. These are two things that I think keep this trend on the right side of the style. Street Number one is a non skinny, non slim, non straight leg. I think colored jeans just look more modern when they have a little bit of slouch or volume to them. Think wide leg, 90s, crop flares, that kind of thing. Skinnies and straight legs just look a little bit mature when done in a colored denim. The other thing, again, this is just my opinion, is that saturated colors look better than muted ones. Dark brown jeans look more polished and modern than a muted brown. Saturated olive looks better than, like a light sage. This is another example of hanging onto things in case they come back around. If you still love your dusty pink straight legs, you do, you boo. But they don't really look current or trendy. Choosing jeans with either more volume or richer color will help them look more current. But choosing jeans with more volume and richer color is the best strategy for making this look trendy and current and modern. This is another one I think will continue to get bigger as the season goes on. I really honestly just wanted to talk about it because black denim jackets are everywhere. They're a great piece for fall. So if you are updating your fall wardrobe, I think that's a good one to go for. But I thought I would throw the others in there too, so you can just keep an eye out for them. And I know you guys love it when you're in a store and you see things, you're like, I know about that. So now you know about that. All right. Trend number nine is suede. Leather and suede for fall are not exactly groundbreaking, but suede in particular is having a moment this season. I think suede is the perfect fall fabric when it comes to, like, the leather and, you know, those kinds of things. It gives a rich texture that elevates every outfit, but it's lighter weight and more flexible, more breathable than leather, which means you get to have all the fall outfit vibes, but you're not miserable during the transitional weather. Skirts are big this fall, too, and a suede skirt is a good opportunity for the two fur trend. Or you can choose a suede bag in a trending color like chocolate or burgundy to get two trends for the price of one. Fall is also a great time for suede boots and suede shoes. As anyone like me who lives in a snowy, slushy, salty climate will tell you, winter is not kind to suede at all. So think suede for fall, leather for winter to avoid ruining your beautiful shoes. Finally, trend number 10. There are a couple of handbag trends this season, including slouchy bags, which is the one I want to focus on. You've probably heard me talk about how trends go hand in hand, right? Like long tops went with skinny jeans, but when pants got wider, tops got shorter. And that's how we are now with the crop tops. That's in response to the wider leg jean. Nothing exists in a vacuum, and I think that the slouchy bag is sort of representative of that. When we look at the more tailored, structured jackets and some of the narrower pants that are out there this season, a slouchy bag is a good compliment. It helps to keep the whole look from becoming too serious looking, just like a more refined, structured bag helps the slouchy, oversized fits not look sloppy. So think about your style. Would it be helped by a little slouch or a little structure? A good compromise is a slouchy bag with a structured bottom so that it holds its shape a little bit better while still giving the trendy vibes of a slouchy bag. And it's a whole lot easier to find stuff. It's really difficult to look stylish if you have to empty the contents of your bag onto your lap just to find a lipstick. All right, friends, there you have it. 10 Wearable Trends for Fall 2024 I hope this episode has given you some insight into what's big for the season and some practical tips for making it easy to keep your wardrobe looking fresh and current.
