It all began the night before Royal Marines of 4.5commando attacking a Taliban fort in Helmand Province. They were trying to find their comrade, Lance Corporal Matthew Ford, who'd become separated from the rest of his force during fighting. From BBC Radio 4 and the History podcast the Fort. Speaking for the first time, Royal Marines and Army pilots describe moment by moment a mission that would go down in military history. 14th of 1st 2007, orders were given at 0900 for an attack on Jugrum Fort. We felt there were Taliban fighters coming through this complex called Jugram Fort. This was the route, and what we needed to do was cut off the Snake's head. This might be your heartland, but I'm going to put a whole company of Royal Marines into the center of your heartland. As Zulu company went up into the Juggernaufort area, all hell broke lo. It was the most intense firefight I've ever been involved in. A brutal ambush, a frantic withdrawal, then a realization. The word gets around that Fordy is missing. Somebody was going to have to go back and get Matthew Ford. And with the clock ticking, a rescue plan which defied belief. The Apache pilot said to me, you just need four volunteers. We secure them to the Apache wings and we'll go back and get Lance Corporal Ford. It dawned on us that there was not Special Forces. It's going to be us doing this. Our mission then was to prevent Matthew Ford from becoming captured by the Taliban. Right, I'm about to sit on a helicopter, fly into a Taliban fort. The fort. Listen first on BBC Sounds.
