Hey, welcome back to the how to podcast series. I chuckle because, hey, it's fun to do this podcast and I get to have time with you, so why would I come here? Sad like, oh, and welcome to the how to podcast series. Me? No, it's fun. I get to do this with you. And this is so cool.
Co-host or Podcast Assistant
Thank you for being here. This right here is an example of Dave turning up the Dave dial a
Dave Campbell
little bit because normally I'm a little
Co-host or Podcast Assistant
bit like this, but I turn it
Dave Campbell
up for you because I like being with you. So thanks for being here. Thanks for being part of the show. I'm bringing back. I'm Brit. Well, Justin Timberlake. He brought the sexy back. I'm bringing back an episode from the past, a daily Dave, and repackaging it, putting it here because it still has meaning. It does. It's called Evergreen content and it also becomes a numbered episode for my show. I've been doing a lot of file
Co-host or Podcast Assistant
maintenance, cleaning up my stuff and I'm
Dave Campbell
thinking, you know what, this episode deserves another shot, a little bit more life. Because it's talking about something that we don't do very well as interviewers. And it's part of my interview tips section on YouTube. I know you're not like a big YouTube person. I can tell because you're not following YouTube channel.
Co-host or Podcast Assistant
For my show.
Dave Campbell
It's quite sad. On YouTube I have playlists where I break down episodes into little playlists. Instead of having one big wall of content, I have little, little mini playlists and I have a playlist for guesting and being a host of an interview podcast. So if you're interested, this will be
Co-host or Podcast Assistant
in that folder for you along with
Dave Campbell
a bunch of other episodes. If you've never done playlists on your YouTube channel, they're great. You can just keep creating them. A little, a little bonus tip, okay, don't tell anybody. This little bonus tip is when you create your playlist, make sure you fill out the description for the playlist, give it a good title, that something would catch people's attention. For the group of episodes in that playlist, theme them really well. Make sure everything in there is relevant and then give yourself a good description like that sparks people's curiosity and maybe put in like some questions that your playlist is the answer to. All of this stuff is public facing and allows your audience to to find your show easily. They're not seeing again a big wall of content for all of your past episodes. They get to see little bite sized chunks and use the end card. That's what shows at the end of the end of the podcast episode that sparks people to stay with you and go to the next logical, the next best thing. That's a good little tip as well. So use YouTube the right way. Don't just post it there and hope for the best. Use the tools that YouTube gives you. It'll help you. As podcasters, we need to leverage silence. I know you just looked at your phone. Silence is a.
Co-host or Podcast Assistant
Is a great tool in podcasting.
Dave Campbell
And what I'm hearing is people who are removing every little piece of silence and cramming their words up to each other like a traffic jam. And it's very hard to grasp what you're saying because you talk so fast. There's one podcaster I listened to recently, and I actually had to slow them down. You know, you can speed up your podcast speed because you're like, I just. I like to have a squirrel brain, and it's really good for me. Well, I can't do that. I just like to listen to normal podcasts at normal speed.
Co-host or Podcast Assistant
I'm fine with that.
Dave Campbell
But I actually had to turn this person down because, oh, my gosh, they were like a hamster on a hamster wheel.
Co-host or Podcast Assistant
Just go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go.
Dave Campbell
And I was exhausted listening. I don't even know how they did this. They probably used a tool that sped them up or cut out all their brakes, something. But oh, my gosh, slow down, person.
Co-host or Podcast Assistant
Come on.
Dave Campbell
So we need to embrace silence. It's a thing, and we need to be how we do our interviews. And that's why I did this episode. It's for podcasters on trying to be quiet when your guest speaks, because when you talk over your guest, it is just horrible. I'm just listening right now while I'm recording this and editing a podcast, which is a group of podcasting professionals, and they're getting together to talk podcasting, and they're all tripping over each other. No, you go. No, you go. Oh, sorry, I shouldn't have talked. No, no, no, you continue.
Co-host or Podcast Assistant
Finish your thought.
Dave Campbell
These are people who are experts, and
Co-host or Podcast Assistant
they can't even get it right.
Dave Campbell
Let your guests talk. And that's why I created this episode. So here you go. Here's a blast from the past, a younger version of Dave on the how to Podcast series. Here you go.

Co-host or Podcast Assistant
But thank you for so much for taking time to listen to the Daily Dave. The idea behind this, short, really, really short episodes that just give you one thing that you can work on as a podcasting tip, something you can implement today. So as you're doing your edits, you're doing all that wonderful work behind the scenes that nobody knows, but everybody hears. This is just for you. And if you're struggling with your editing, you're like, dave, I could really use a hand with this. I. I wanted to do this, but it's just becoming cumbersome and it's taking time away from me being with my kids and all the other stuff I got going on. And I'd just love to give this to somebody, my hands up. I'd love to help you reach out on the HowToPodcast CA website and let's have a conversation, jump on a zoom call, talk about what you need and create something that works for you. Because I know as a new podcaster, the money's not rolling in. You don't have a big sponsor or nothing like that. You have a small, tiny audience and you're just starting. I don't want editing and recording to be the one thing that gets in the way that makes you want to stop detering your message. Because again, you're the only one who can share your podcast. You're the only one who can do it, because you're the only you. So let's get rid of some of those roadblocks, work together. Let's see if we can come up with something that works for you. Okay, that's my offer. So my hands up. Love to help you. Today I got a message came in to the Daily day from William about just some basic general etiquette to keep in mind on your next interview. So when you have your guest there and you hit record, William has some thoughts about his tip and I'll expand on it as well.
Dave Campbell
Thank you, William, for sending this in.
Co-host or Podcast Assistant
But here we go, some tips from William to consider on your next interview for your podcast. Here's William.
William (Listener/Contributor)
Hi, Dave, this is William. I wanted to share my tip for the Daily Dave, to save time in editing, when you are hosting with a guest on your show, stay quiet while your guests speak. It is so tempting to drop in simple phrases like yes and right and okay while your guests speak. Those are natural parts of language that we use without realizing, but they can distract your listeners. Yes, you can remove them during editing, but that's a lot of unnecessary work. It's easier to train yourself to limit interjections and allow your guest or co host to complete their thought. Any other advantages to being quiet as the host? Dave, thanks for all you do to help podcasters on the how to Podcast series.
Co-host or Podcast Assistant
Great, great tips there, William. I love that. Yes, definitely. When your guest is talking, you don't have to speak over them and add your $0.02 or add your affirming comments to their to them as a guest on your show. And I tell my guests that often that, listen, when we're recording, I'm going to be quiet. And it's not that I'm not engaged with what you're saying. It's just easier for editing because then I don't have to take out all those things, put them in here and there. Don't be completely silent, don't be stoic and just be like, I'm not connecting with you. You are my guest. Be there.
Dave Campbell
Be.
Co-host or Podcast Assistant
Yes.
Dave Campbell
Add some flavor, please.
Co-host or Podcast Assistant
But don't feel like you have to be. Huh? Yeah, okay. Right? Oh, yeah.
Dave Campbell
Oh yeah, me too.
Co-host or Podcast Assistant
Yeah, I like that. Yeah, that. My favorite color is orange too. Yeah, I like baseball. Oh, my favorite chocolate bar is this kind of chocolate bar.
Dave Campbell
Yes.
Co-host or Podcast Assistant
Oh, yes. That is very cluttered in a listening sense for your listeners. So anything you can do to give your guest space. And it's very unnerving to do that to be in the very beginning of your, of your journey as an interviewer on your podcast. I get it. But it's a good habit. And you know what? This habit transfers really well into your private life off the microphone. So when your partner, your spouse, your best friend, your kids are talking to you, you're not jumping in, you're not adding your comments you're listening. So your podcast can help your life outside of podcasting and you can take
Dave Campbell
this skill to work.
Co-host or Podcast Assistant
You can you be better at work, be better in your family. It's great when you don't have to feel like you have to interject and you don't have to then as well when they finish their their comment or answer to your question as a guest, you don't have to recite what they just said. We all heard it. Jump to your next thought, your next
Dave Campbell
question and keep the podcast moving, keep the episode going.
Co-host or Podcast Assistant
Simple traps that we all fall into. And I would love for you to go back and listen to some of your earlier interviews and be, be hypercritical of yourself in the sense that you want to just identify. Maybe there was some spots where you know, hey, I could probably have been a little more quiet here. And if it's really bad and you're like, oh, Dave, there is a way for you to go in and fix that and repost your episode without losing your listens, without any of that happening. Because somebody years from now might find this episode and they might have a cleaned up version of it because you found, identified and fixed some of the
Dave Campbell
things that you're learning about yourself.
Co-host or Podcast Assistant
You can always do that.
Dave Campbell
I can help you with that as well. This is the Daily Dave.
Co-host or Podcast Assistant

Co-host or Podcast Assistant
I appreciate you being here. If you need any help, if you're,
Dave Campbell
if you're a new interviewer and you've never interviewed anybody on your show, then you and I can practice. I love being a practice dummy for podcasters to learn how to be a interviewer. You and I can mock interview and I'll be your guest. I'll give you. You tell me, do you want me to be an agreeable guest? You want me to be a difficult guest? Do you want me to give you one word answers? You want me to go talk forever and you have to shut me down? I will show you how to do this. I've been in HR for years. That's what I went to school for. I know how to do this. And I've interviewed a ton of people over my podcast alone, over a thousand interviews. So if you want me to help you learn how to be an interviewer,
Co-host or Podcast Assistant
reach out to me at howtopodcast ca.
Dave Campbell
Happy to help. Reach out right today, like right now. You have nothing else right now. Reach out. There's a link in the show notes right there.
Co-host or Podcast Assistant
Look on your phone. Yeah, click that link.
Dave Campbell
My calendar is right there at howtopodcast ca. Come on, let's go.
Co-host or Podcast Assistant
So I get asked quite often, usually at the end of a podcast, like right now, Dave, how can we help you? Like, how can we as a listener, like support the show? Can we come rake your leaves? Can we cut the grass? Shovel the snow? Watch your dog help you move? What can we do? Clean your dishes? Oh, that'd be interesting. Well, if you don't, if you can't do that because you know you're in Poland, maybe you can help us by supporting us with our Buy me a coffee. It's right there on our website and you know, it just will help us to a stay fueled because you know, we drink a lot of coffee around here and it helps the show. So if you want to help us,
Dave Campbell
it's out of the goodness of your heart.
Co-host or Podcast Assistant
I can tell you that listening to the podcast to this point, you've already helped us. So Much. But I do have people saying, dave, I'd love to. To give back something small, even just to the show. Buy me a coffee link is on our website, how to Podcast Ca. And you can support the show that way. It would mean a lot to have you on our team supporting what we do here. If you find value in the show, then that's great. Share the show, tell somebody about it. And when somebody says, dave, I want to start a podcast, who should I check out? Oh, you should go check out the
Dave Campbell
how to podcast series.
Co-host or Podcast Assistant
Because of all the great co hosts and all the things that happen here, the meetups, everything. And I would appreciate that. And then fill her a cup once in a while if you can. But again, thank you so much for being here and supporting the how to Podcast series. Take care of talk soon.
Dave Campbell
You're still here. Amazing. That's, like, super cool.
Co-host or Podcast Assistant
Okay.
Dave Campbell
This is bonus stuff for people who listen longer than the norm. And you're not the norm. So congratulations for not being the norm. The question that I'm getting from a podcaster is how do I generate more feedback from my audience?
Co-host or Podcast Assistant
I put my episode out and I hear nothing.
Dave Campbell
Just crickets. Dave, what do I do to increase or engage or even start getting feedback from my audience?
Co-host or Podcast Assistant
Because it's depressing.
Dave Campbell
Like, I know what it's like. I have a survey out right now for this show. And you'd think, right, it's a podcast about podcasting. People be lining up out the door to respond to my survey. You know what's happening?
Co-host or Podcast Assistant
Crickets?
Dave Campbell
Nothing. I've got like a handful of people who've responded, and I keep talking about it. It's in the show notes.
Co-host or Podcast Assistant
But, you know, a very small part
Dave Campbell
of your audience is ever going to do anything that you ask of them. Just keep that in mind. That's normal. That's not abnormal. That's normal. A lot of your people come to your show, they listen to your podcast, they watch your podcast, whatever, and they are very slow to respond. They don't see the need to respond. They assume a lot of things, like, you're probably drowning in con comments and you're drowning in feedback. You're drowning in speak, pipe and buy me a coffee donations. My. My feedback, my donation, my. My support of your show. Let's change that word. My support of the show through your buy me coffee. Probably meaningless to you. I'm just. It's one five dollar coffee. Like, you probably wouldn't even see it. Right? That's what people assume. They're like, he probably Wouldn't even respond if I, if I reached out to you today, Dave, you're too busy, you wouldn't respond. I leave a comment on YouTube, you're not going to respond. I leave a comment on Spotify, you're not going to do anything about that, right?
Co-host or Podcast Assistant
Wrong.
Dave Campbell
We need to encourage that feedback, and we encourage it by how we ask for it and how we respond to it. Building that up one person at a
Co-host or Podcast Assistant
time, it's a lot of extra work.
Dave Campbell
It's a lot of time commitment on your behalf to foster this relationship. But the moment somebody reaches out to you, definitely, definitely respond. Be a part of this conversation.
Co-host or Podcast Assistant
One little thing, too. If you have an interview podcast, I
Dave Campbell
want you to stop thinking of your
Co-host or Podcast Assistant
interviewee, the person coming on your show. Stop thinking of them as a guest. Like, just take that out of your brain.
Dave Campbell
Think of them as a listener. And if they haven't listened before, which
Co-host or Podcast Assistant
they should, it's going on a podcast, you should listen to the show before
Dave Campbell
you guest on the show. If they haven't listened before, there's a good chance they will after the interview
Co-host or Podcast Assistant
because now they know you.
Dave Campbell
So instead of treating your interviewee, the person that's coming on your show, as a guest, treat them as a listener and see how the conversation goes.
Co-host or Podcast Assistant
I think it's going to be even better.
Dave Campbell
And you can ask them right there
Co-host or Podcast Assistant
in the pre interview, because you do pre interviews. Right?
Dave Campbell
How did you find my show? To be a guest on the show, how did you find me? What you're doing right now is you're getting feedback. What app do you listen to my show on? I listen on Apple, I listen on Spotify. Right. You can ask them stuff right there that they're, they're sitting right there in
Co-host or Podcast Assistant
front of you on your screen.
Dave Campbell
That's feedback.
Co-host or Podcast Assistant
So find every opportunity you can to
Dave Campbell
get feedback and build upon it and be responsive, encourage it, and it will go over time. But remember, a very tiny small percent
Co-host or Podcast Assistant
of your audience will ever reach out.
Dave Campbell
The majority of people you're never going to hear from. So the fact that I've heard from
Co-host or Podcast Assistant
you, you know who you are, that
Dave Campbell
have reached out to me. Thank you. Because you represent the audience as a whole, I would love to hear from more of you because if I can hear from you, maybe I can support you, promote you, be in your, on your side, be a support to you, however you, whatever you need.
Co-host or Podcast Assistant
That's why I'm here. So I do the show. It's for you. I'd love to help you. How to podcast ca get more feedback by demonstrating the it's important to you
Dave Campbell
as a podcaster, and it'll come. It's going to take time, but it's going to come.
Co-host or Podcast Assistant
Thanks for listening.
Podcast Summary: The How To Podcast Series – Episode E681: “Podcasters, Try Being Quiet When Your Guest Speaks – Podcasting and Interview Tips”
Host: Dave Campbell
Date: May 9, 2026
This episode, hosted by Dave Campbell, delivers practical interview and podcasting tips, specifically focusing on the power of silence and restraint during guest interviews. Dave brings back an “evergreen” past episode (from his “Daily Dave” segment) that offers timeless advice for podcasters seeking to improve their interviewing technique, streamline editing, and enhance listener experience. The core message: Let your guest speak—embracing silence is a key tool for effective podcasting.
“Don’t just post [episodes] there and hope for the best. Use the tools that YouTube gives you. It’ll help you." (01:45, Dave Campbell)
“There’s one podcaster I listened to recently, and I actually had to slow them down ... oh my gosh, they were like a hamster on a hamster wheel ... slow down, person!” (03:32-03:53, Dave Campbell)
“Let your guests talk ... when you talk over your guest, it is just horrible.” (04:37, Dave Campbell)
"It is so tempting to drop in simple phrases like ‘yes’ and ‘right’ and ‘okay’ while your guest speaks... but they can distract your listeners." (07:53, William)
Dave endorses William’s advice:
“It's not that I'm not engaged ... it's just easier for editing ... Don’t be completely silent ... Be there. Add some flavor, please...but don’t feel like you have to be ‘huh... yeah... okay... right...’” (09:05–09:15, Dave Campbell)
Suggests this habit of quiet listening carries professional and personal benefits, improving communication in everyday life.
Advises hosts not to recap the guest’s answer point-by-point—listeners have already heard it. Move the conversation forward.
Dave answers a bonus listener question on how to generate more feedback from the audience.
Acknowledges the slow pace of incoming feedback is typical—not a sign of failure.
Advocates for actively soliciting and quickly responding to audience outreach, even from guests, to foster a sense of community. Quote:
“A very small part of your audience is ever going to do anything that you ask of them. Just keep that in mind. That’s normal.” (17:09, Dave Campbell)
Suggests treating show guests as future listeners, and using pre-interviews as a two-way exchange for feedback.
Dave’s presentation is upbeat, supportive, and laced with humor and encouragement. He positions himself as a practical coach and cheerleader for podcasters at all levels, always ready to offer tangible advice and mentorship.
This episode delivers a clear, actionable message for interview podcasters: Train yourself to resist filling silences—let your guests speak freely, minimize interjections, and offer your full attention. The benefits are twofold: improved podcast editability and a richer, more engaging listening experience. Dave’s practical advice extends beyond podcasting, speaking to anyone who wants to be a better listener—at work, at home, and on the mic.
