It's totally crazy. What happens when your brain is tapped out on energy. Then you're not going to be able to get the quality sleep that you want, which makes you more tapped out of energy, and you just get stuck in this negative cycle.
Dr. Patrick K. Porter
You don't need a lot of sleep. Most people are. The misconception is we need eight hours of sleep. That's not true. Studies show six and a half hours is the optimum because I'm not wasting my time in bed. You know, I'm going to get a good, efficient sleep and I'm going to wake up, rest and relax. During the middle of the day, I'm going to do my reboot because everybody has a psychological and physiological low. About 2:00 in the afternoon, your temperature drops 2 degrees.
Dave Asprey
Just having a a photo of the sun in your office can change your brain waves. It seems counterintuitive that you could use light in order to induce sleep. How does that work with Braintap? You're listening to the Human Upgrade with Dave Asprey.
Dr. Patrick K. Porter
Hey, real quick.

Full video podcast episodes, weekly YouTube only videos, and some wild extras you're not going to hear here. Just search Dave Asprey on YouTube. See you there. Today is a special short edition of the podcast and it is a focused episode looking at light and sound and biohacking and what you can do. Our guest is a longtime friend and member of the community and a guy who is a lead sponsor at the Biohacking Conference May 28th in Austin, Texas. None other than Dr. Patrick K. Porter, who's the founder and chief brain officer at Braintap. And Braintap is a platform that blends light, sound and guided visualization to let you have full control of your brain function, your mental performance, your stress levels. It's got decades of experience in neuroscience and we're going to go deep on how this works. Dr. Porter or Patrick, welcome to the show.
Dr. Patrick K. Porter
Hey, thanks for having me, Dave. It's great to be here.
Dave Asprey
How do light and sound rewrite biology?
Dr. Patrick K. Porter
Well, it actually. Now they're proving it actually changes your DNA because. Because now they know that our DNA is actually a crystalline structure of like 80,000. We could stretch our DNA from here to Pluto and it's absorbing light energy and transmitting that energy as codes. So if we don't have energy, we can't transmit those codes. So first of all we're going to give energy to the body, what's needed. So think about it. You want to drive to New York and you're in Florida. You can't drive without a gas tank full of gas. So a lot of people try to make changes in their life. They don't have any energy in their cells. So we need to fill the energy in the cells. And also what happens is we know that your genetic system, your epigenetics, has changed by the words you choose, actually, even by the people you're around. Everything you're talking about in biohacking changes. When somebody says, what changes your biology, Everything. When you think about the words you use, they now know. Like Bruce Lipton, who we bring out all the time to Quantum University. He says 3200 gene expressions are triggered by or basically activated, either going up or down, depending upon your propensity to being an optimist or a pessimist. If you're a pessimist, they've actually done studies that show you actually crush your mitochondria. 200 times less energy is emitted from the cells or light. They can actually measure this. So when we think about what do we do first? We're going to create an environment balancing the brain. Because most people when we're born, when you and I were born, Dave, we had 18.1 volts in our brain. And then by the time we're 27, it's usually about 10.1 volts. If that voltage goes down below 6, we're going to start having dementia. If it goes down below 4, we're going to start having Alzheimer's symptoms. It's all about energy. So if we can bring that energy up, then we can function better, we can think better, we can perform better. And most importantly, the one thing that most people take for granted is sleep better. You know you want to sleep, you know, that's where you incubate those superpowers.
Dave Asprey
It seems counterintuitive that you could use light in order to induce sleep. How does that work with Braintap?
Dr. Patrick K. Porter
Well, most. You've probably heard the expression, my kids are too tired to sleep. And most adults are too tired to meditate or sleep, because when you close your eyes, 30% of your brain actually goes to sleep unless you're activating it with light. So what we've shown is if you use retinal flashing, your eyes are closed, by the way, and we're using very low level light. It's not a intense light. When you look at this computer screen, we're looking at, it's a million LEDs or whatever that we're only using eight LEDs because we only need a flicker response. We're actually working with cranial nerve number two. So what we're doing is. In the old days, it was easy to describe because we used to tune our cars with a tuning light. But our brain kind of tunes the same way. And the science is called frequency following response. So our cells actually, it's kind of like when something's vibrating. Like if we had a tuning fork and they're both the same tuning fork, if I hit one, the other one would start resonating because it's the same frequency. So we want to get those cells to be all in harmony and frequency. So the way we do that is through light, sound and vibration. And maybe light won't work for one person, maybe sound will work for one person, maybe vibration work for one person. They've all worked, they all work in different areas. But what we did is we put them all together in one place so that we can get that what we call a holographic effect.
Dave Asprey
Quantum biology for a lot of people is still really French. What hard science do we have that quantum biology is real?
Dr. Patrick K. Porter
Well, in 1994, the actual Institute of National, the NIH, actually said we have a biosphere. I mean, can you imagine that? It's right on their website. It says every illness comes from the field. They actually say that. But then they give you a pharmaceutical drug, you know, so it's like it comes from energy, it comes from frequency, it comes from what we're emitting. You know, it comes from the field, in other words. So the science is out there. And now if you look up frequency medicine, I mean, even when we get an X ray, that's frequency medicine. They're, they're using frequency to, to tell us what our bones look like. And you know, when we get an mri, all these things, this is just, it's an assault on our body. But it's, it's still, it's, it's showing us, it's revealing to us the frequencies that are in our body, the state of cellular activity in our system.
Dave Asprey
What does current research say about using sound and light for enhancing cognition?
Dr. Patrick K. Porter
Well, we know that there's something called the Mozart effect, so that's been well researched. And what it says is if we listen to broke classical music or 10 cycle music, they call it alpha music, we just. Smarter. You don't have to learn anything more. We can just play that in the room. And that's what my dad did when we were learning Silva, the Silva sound was really this weird set of. It was actually isochronic tones. But they didn't tell us that at the time. They just said it was Silva sound because Jose wanted us to, you know, he created. So. But we'd play that in the room and everybody would just simply sync to it. It's kind of like going to a concert and everybody there loves the band. Everybody's going to get up, start clapping. You know, you look around and goes, how did everybody choreograph that? It's because everybody's in sync at that point. You know, everybody gets in harmony. So music is really good and we can do that. Our cells are listening all the time. So this pulsing on the cells is telling the cells what to do. Think of our sun right now as the mitochondria for our solar system. It's broadcasting codes to our body. If we don't get to bed by 10 o', clock, we don't make as much melatonin. If we don't get there by 11, we don't clean our liver. At 2 o' clock in the a.m. our temperature is going to increase to 2 degrees. Now, how does our body know to do that? Because our sun is telling it what to do. The mitochondria. So every cell has that. So this mitochondria is beaming this information. And in fact, when I had you on one of my summits, you told me about it, and that's what started me researching it. When you told me about biophotic exchange, I didn't even know about that. I think it was like seven years ago. But, you know, it's a whole new. You know, it opened my eyes to a whole new world. And there's a lot of science out there about that now through photobiomodulation. That's why you see so much red light therapy at your. At your conferences and things like that. Yeah.
Dave Asprey
By the way, guys, if you go to biohackingconference.com, you could get a ticket. Use code BRAINTAP30. And you can spend three days with Dr. Porter and me and some other really cool people are gonna be there. Like James Nestor will be on stage, Ryan holiday and about 4,000 people. They're just vibing. And the cool thing is there'll be. What do you bring in, like 20 stations? Yeah, there'll be 20 stations where you can lay on a lounger, put on a brain tap, go into an altered state and just experience it. It's Austin May 28th through 30th. And it's the most fun party you'll ever imagine. And yes, because it's a fun party. Steve Aoki will be playing a private event for us just as part of the conference. It's the coolest thing you'll ever see. And Patrick, thank you for sponsoring the event.
Dr. Patrick K. Porter
It's always our best event. Every year it's, I mean, when we, as we've been going to it since you were in la, I mean, and moving it around now, but the people there are always the best. I mean, I always brag you up when we go to talks around the world because I show the brains of biohackers. When you do the nutrition right, you do the movement right, you do, you know, you do all these other things right, you're sleeping well, your brain's going to perform at its highest, maximum level.
Dave Asprey
The results are measurable. And you can also just see it when you go in there. You see all these people with glowing eyes and big smiles and they're not angry. And people, they'll sit there at the, at your booth, they'll sit there in line and people will, they'll make their, they'll meet their best friends. I've seen people meet and get married at the event or start businesses and, and it's about having a community who cares about increasing their cognitive function, being more conscious. And that's why Braintop is just such a great fit for what we're doing. If you're using a protein powder, you need to hear this. The Clean Label project recently tested 160 top selling protein powders in the US and they found that nearly half exceeded the Prop 65 threshold for lead. Oops. That's why I love Puree's PW1 whey protein. The clean label project does third party testing on every single batch against over 200 contaminants. Puree is the only clean protein brand in the US with a Clean Label Project transparency certification. And every bag has a QR code so you can scan it and see what's in it. And of course it comes from pasture raised cow's milk with no hormones, GMOs, no pesticides, and it doesn't have the metals, pesticides and harmful toxins that are in a lot of common protein powders. So switch to PW1 right now. Listeners can get 20% off the already discounted subscriptions. You'll get almost a third off the price. Go to Puree.com Dave and use code Dave. That's P-U-O-R-I.com Dave staring at screens all day is wrecking your vision and your brain. You might just think it's aging, but it's not. It's a broken eye brain connection and it gets worse every hour you spend looking at a screen. If you plan to live to 180 and beyond, you need to protect your dominant sense. Now here's the good news. You can train your visual system just like you train your body or your brain. Screen Fit is a science backed method built by Dr. Bryce Applebaum that rebuilds how your brain and eyes work together. No eye drops, no appointments, no gimmicks, just 15 minutes a day to sharpen focus, reduce fatigue and protect your vision for the long haul. I saw real results in just a week. If you strive for peak performance or plan to live a very long time like I do, you want clear vision to match, go to screenfit.com Dave or use code Dave to get $200 off and try it for yourself. You'll see what I mean. Literally. What's like the wildest transformation you've seen from someone who's using Braintap?
Dr. Patrick K. Porter
Well, I've had someone who actually was taken to John Hopkins and they were told that they only had six months to live. And I said, well, let's schedule for a nine month program. She goes, oh, I have six, you know, I only have six months, whatever. I said, no. I said, your body is changing every day. You're not the same person you were when you sat down here. Your body's changing at 50 million cells per second. I mean, and you're. Now we know the DNA is changing every 40 seconds. So who are you? You're not the person that started this podcast, you know, you're somebody different. So what I did when we started working with her now, what she was, she was dwelling on an event that happened to her. Unfortunately, she was raped in Central park, which is a bad thing. And she couldn't get it out of her head. So as soon as we did the, you know, my background's nlp, so I did some NLP work with her and I made her some sessions to listen to. By the third week, she was coming in looking like she was going to a spring party. She was dressing in all black, by the way, and she wasn't in New York City anymore, but she, she was dressing like a New Yorker, just all black and looking like she's going to funeral. She started wearing colored clothes again. She wouldn't go out after dark. And I said, well, in Fact, we found out that she was running in midnight, which nobody should be running. I said, I'm a black belt in karate and I'm not going to run in Central park at midnight. You know, so the, you know, so these things happen. But what happened was she, she changed her perception of what reality was. She looked at life as a threat everywhere. As soon as she shifted that perception, she went back to John Hopkins. And I thought, here we go, we got a testimonial. And we're going to have scientific evidence from these doctors. You know what they told her? They misdiagnosed her. She didn't have anything.
Dave Asprey
No way.
Dr. Patrick K. Porter
Yeah, I said what I said. She went to three different doctors and they all told her she had six. She had an, she had an immune problem. Most people don't realize your immune system is adaptive.
Dave Asprey
That's insane.
Dr. Patrick K. Porter
Your immune system is adaptive and it's, it's circulating all the time. It's always looking out for everything. In fact, most people don't realize. You know those commercials you see on the Weather Channel where they say the pollen's up right now? They do that because they sell 40% more of their product because they trigger the pollen response in people just by showing them that big, giant pollen which we can't even see. You know, the fear factor causes the body to downregulate.
Dave Asprey
You know what's, what's also interesting, they have some research I've seen. Just having a fear photo of the sun in your office can change your brain waves. Your body has all these invisible things that it's looking at like that. And you just had a really profound example of someone who's, you know, oh, you're going to die or not. Right. Do you think that it was the direct effect of the flashing, like the light and sound? Was it a mindset shift? Like, what really happened Scientifically, I know it's all theories, but, like, what do you think?
Dr. Patrick K. Porter
I think that what happened was when you get the energy up, I always call it frequency. So think about frequency as what you frequently see. So if you're a high frequency person, you're going to see high frequency foods, you're going to see high frequency people, you're going to see high frequency activities. If you go to a doctor, you're going to see low frequency because they're trying to cover their ass, right? They want to make sure that they don't get sued and they don't even give you the option of healing. They say, you know, they want to make sure that they don't get sued, and it's terrible. We should, we should be using the placebo effect in a positive way. You know, these cells are changing every day. There's an opportunity. There's an infinite amount of opportunities for you to have health and opportunity. So I think with her, what happened was we put a crack. My dad used to say, you've got to, you got to. Everybody has this arm around them. You got to find where they have a little glitch in the armor, and you got to crack that armor and get in there. And for her, she was believing these doctors and doctors. I'm not saying they're all bad. I mean, if I break my leg, I want to go to a doctor. You know, if I need a surgery, I want to go to a doctor. But we don't have a health care system. The health care system is the biohacking conference. You know, there's. There's no insurance. There's no, there's no insurance that can keep you well. You can pay as much money as you want. You're not going to be well. Somebody goes, oh, I'm taking care of. I got great insurance. No, that's sick care. Health care is taking care of yourself every day. So if you want to be part of the health care solution, you got to, you got to do it for your. And I think what I told her was, I said, nobody has the right to tell you when you're going to live or die. Make the decision today that you decide today is your day. Because everyone should live their life like the shamans say, right? The shamans say today is the last day of the rest of my life. But I'm going to plan my life as if I'm going to live forever. Because we don't know. The future is not given. You know, we have to, you know, even if we take care of ourselves, who knows what's going to happen, you know, but. But we want to be prepared to live to 180, like you're saying at the conference. You know, we want to. I, I want to be. I'm 63 right now. I'm going to be 64 this summer. And I still get out and play baseball, run around, play volleyball, do everything with my grandkids, swim. I plan on doing that when I'm 90, 100, whatever. Because there's no reason these cells can regenerate. We don't have to. What the science tells us is that these cells don't need to age. There's actually science that, that Harvard put out that they, they Kept a chicken, they kept chicken hearts alive. I actually posted an article about it where they, if the, if the janitor wouldn't have shut off the lights on a weekend, those cells would still be alive. They kept them alive for 35 years and they said they think they could keep these cells alive forever. All they had to do is give them the right nutrition, give them the right light and get rid of their excrement. So if you can detox, you can get the, you know, give the cells what they need, energy. Those cells can regenerate at any age. And we've, we've done studies, Dave, with people over 90 years old and had a 19% improvement in their brain function in six weeks.
Dave Asprey
19% improvement in brain function in six weeks with how many minutes a day of brain tap?
Dr. Patrick K. Porter
They did three times a day. They did their morning SMR sessions, which is to wake up, we call it digital coffee. And then in the middle of the day they did their reboot session, which is a theta or a gamma session. Gamma is the, the bass drum for the brain. So as you get dementia, that's the one that usually atrophies. And then we do the delta training at night to get them that deep level four sleep. Because most people aren't detoxing their brain. They don't get into that deep sleep cycle. And that's where either a breathing technique or brain tap or some, you have to have some kind of sleep regimen to get you into that deep level four sleep. To get you, you don't need a lot of sleep. Most people are. The misconception is we need eight hours of sleep. That's not true. Studies show six and a half hours is the optimum and one hour of deep sleep and two hours of REM sleep. So, you know, I always tell people, what are you doing with that hour and a half? I'm doing a lot of things because I'm not wasting my time in bed. You know, I'm going to get a good efficient sleep and I'm going to wake up rested and relaxed in the middle of the day. I'm going to do my reboot. Because everybody has a psychological and physiological low. About 2:00 in the afternoon, your temperature drops 2 degrees. That's just a fact of nature. So now when we're younger, we don't feel it because we're high energy. And a lot of biohackers might not feel it because they're high energy, you know, but when we measure brains, and I've measured over 30,000 brains most brains are aging at about six years ahead of time and they only have 30% energy. So imagine you're running around all day long with 30% of the gas in your tank and you can't make it.
Dave Asprey
It's totally crazy. What happens when your brain is topped out on energy. Then you're not going to be able to, to get the quality sleep that you want, which makes you more tapped out of energy, and you just get stuck in this negative cycle and it's just not a good thing. So it makes a lot of sense that you could improve cognition by 19%. Except how do you measure cognition? Because that's not just iq. What does that really mean?
Dr. Patrick K. Porter
Well, we can actually do testing. There are tests that you can do that are validated in science for memory recall and things of that nature. That's what we did in the book is called saving your brain. With Dr. Kelly Miller. We, we actually, he actually posted a thing in their brain cap to the rescue. But if you do other things, it's even better. I mean, brain tap's just one solution. You need to eat right. You know, you. We didn't make them eat. Of course, in a study, you got to do just one thing. I mean, we got those results with just doing brain tap. I mean, imagine what, what he does now is he has them do physical exercise, he has them start eating right, you know, getting more essential fats into their diet, get rid of the seed oils, all those kind of things. There's a lot of things you can do to make it work even better. I mean, there's a lot of health optimization strategies. You know, biohacks that you can do that are that people take for granted. You can get them right at the store, too. You're already spending the money when you. I know we talked before and people talk about how expensive biohacking is. It's not expensive at all. Most of America, 90% of America, will lose all their wealth. The last 10 years of their life tried to stay alive. Wow.
Dave Asprey
Really? It makes so much sense. You know, the. This whole we can never die at any cost thing doesn't make any sense.
Dr. Patrick K. Porter
Right?
Dave Asprey
And you might as well be healthy until the moment you drop dead, hopefully while you're doing something that you love. Why not? It just seems like a better plan to me.
Dr. Patrick K. Porter
I mean, think about ancient traditions. I mean, they're the gurus or even the American Indians. They didn't fear death, it was just part of life. But they live life like today was their last day. I mean, you gotta live, you Gotta live life to the fullest, but you don't want to use your body in doing it. A lot of people have a misconception about what enjoyment of life is because they're looking for that fleeting moment of joy. When you're doing the biohacks, you get this sustained energy and that's really what we're looking for. And when you get that sustained energy, you can associate that with love and acceptance and all those other positive emotions. And OxyContin, I mean, oxytocin, Oxycontin. Oxytocin and things like that. You know, in norepinephrine and things like that. Yeah.
Dave Asprey
Built in OxyContin supplier. Yeah. In my new book, heavily meditated, I write a lot about accessing different brain states using different technologies, different techniques, breath work, even psychedelics, mental shifts, just all the things you can do to have control over your state. Talk to me about Gamma. What is your perspective on increasing gamma, which is known to be the hardest that you can raise?
Dr. Patrick K. Porter
Well, the person I met at your conference, actually where I didn't even know they existed, the Friends band, she said, there's no way you can create Gamma in 10 minutes. I said, I guarantee you, you put your device on, put on brain tap in the gamma session, you're going to have gamma in seven minutes. Because we know it takes about seven minutes to synchronize the hemispheres. What's the remisc. So, so what happened was she. She now uses that all over the world when she's talking, she shows what happened to her gamma. I. If you told me 20 years ago, I'd have said gamma's schizophrenic. Nobody, don't worry about that, it's nothing. But now we know that's where the Buddhist adepts go when they meditate. And we now know in science that that's the bass drum. So think about it like you have a marching band and you don't have a bass drum to keep the rhythm of the brain. It's 40 Hz. Typically that's like 10 Hz is for alpha, 40 Hz for gamma. But these gurus can go all the way up to 300Hz frequency. So what happens is Virginia Hunt, who used to be at ucla, she passed away now, but she did a lot with Karelian photography, which is taking images of the energy field of the body. And she showed that when you go either side of beta Gamma or into Alpha, you start to increase the field. Your body, literally, it's like a dark hole or black hole. It sucks in energy and transmits this out around you. So without gamma you can't regulate the brain. And also gamma is a. Gamma produces something called gaba. And most people that are biohackers know what GABA is because it's a precursor to dmt. So if you want to have a psychedelic experience, you need to trigger your own. The only reason we have those psychedelic experiences is we have receptors for them, right? So we can trigger those receptors by creating the frequency that's like those substances because it's just a substance, the chemical solution, but it really has to be turned into an electrical signal. So why don't we just go with the electrical signal and trigger those, those responses in the brain? And that's what, that's what we do. And we've had, I mean we have over 500 sessions now in gamma. I'm totally blown away by gamma since, since I did my study with David Rosenthal with the, with the vets and people were having these psilocybin experiences with no psilocybin. You know, I went, wow, what else can we do now? I don't know of any other substances, we haven't mapped any. Someday I will do an ayahuasca journey. I haven't done one of those yet, but when I do, I would love to brain map somebody. I know that they can get a little crazy, but I've never had the opportunity yet or I can't get Cynthia to let me go to one of those trips because she's afraid, well, I'll come back, like I'll come back as a shaman and I won't want to work again.
Dave Asprey
Be cautious with that drug specifically. I mean I've got a whole chapter and heavily meditated about it. And you might just do some DMT and save yourself a whole lot of risk and have a similar outcome in less time. And I don't want to offend anyone, but if you're going to do it, find a very well qualified shaman from the Shipibo people. And I do talk about the shifts in brainwaves that you find from each of the psychedelics. They don't all do the same thing at all. But one of the most common elements is a shutdown of the default mode network, which is something that allows you to sense yourself as more than just your body, like a feeling of oneness, which is particularly important. You've probably heard that I've been taking mitopure for years, ever since it first came out. It's one of the few supplements that actually moves the needle when you want your cells to work better and your mitochondria to perform best. Mitopure contains urolithin A, which is a clinically backed magic powder for your mitochondria. And it's backed by 10 years of research. But here's the fun part. It's now available in a gummy that actually tastes good. Yeah, a gummy that you want to eat. And it's not a sugar bomb pretending to be healthy. They're sugar free, they taste amazing and they deliver the same high dose bioavailable mito pure I've been using in their soft gels. And best of all, because I actually want to eat them, I take more and I feel better. So if you've been serious about your longevity stack or you just want an easier and better tasting way to get started, try the new Mitopure gummies. They're that Good. Go to timeline.comdave and you get 20% off. I don't like to waste time and I don't think you do either. And that's why I don't really have a ten step skincare routine. And I think you probably don't either. And if you do, good for you. One of the best things I found is the Bon Charge red light light face mask. It takes about 10 minutes a day, it smooths out fine lines and it changes your skin tone. So it's more refined. And if you're looking for it, you'll have a radiant youthful glow. It is backed by the latest research. I love it that I can use it while I'm doing other things. I can listen to something, I can talk to someone on the phone. It's easy to travel with. And since I've started using red light therapy on my face, I've noticed my skin feels much better. So if you want to upgrade your skin care, check out the Boncharge face mask. Go to boncharge.com Dave to save 15%. That's B-O-N-C-H-A-R-G-E.com Dave to save 15%. What does braintop do for the default mode network?
Dr. Patrick K. Porter
We've actually proven that now. We've proven that we shut down that default mode network. The monkey mind. If people are wondering what it is, we also call it the reticular activating system. It's, it's there to protect us. And you know, we're here because our ancestors were paranoid and they didn't die, you know, so, you know, they didn't get, they didn't go Off a cliff or getting by a lion. So that genetic inheritance is, is a curse and a blessing. But what we need to do is we need it when we're out and about doing our thing, but we don't need it. That's what happens with ptsd, right? That, that default mode network gets flipped on and doesn't get turned off. All states of consciousness are okay in the right environment. You know, if I, if I need to protect myself, I need to remember all my skills I learned from sports and karate and martial arts and all those kind of things because they're not going to hurt me. You know, I'm going to protect myself. That's just natural. But I don't need to be that way all the time. I mean, if I meet somebody who's a friend, I need to be friendly and I need to, you know, present an energy because people will feel that energy. We've all had experiences as children. We walk in and our parents fighting. You can actually feel, feel that frequency in the air, you know, the anger, the, the exacerbation of excited excitement and things like that. And kids will run from that. And you know, we were programmed before we were seven years old. So, so, so a lot of these psychedelics, what they do when, when, and I love it because now that we can prove it in science, it really creates a lot of neuroplasticity. So what they need after that though, is they need to have a practice to have that. They have to have the integration. You can have the experience. That's great. And it's like going to a good movie. I mean, I love Star wars, but I'm not gonna live my life by Star Wars. But it gives me a chance to disassociate and, you know, and believe in this alternate reality or, you know, Dune or something like that, you know, those kind of things because I'm a sci fi kind of crazy guy. But the, but that's not, that's not reality. So when I come back here, I gotta remember, what do we do here? The problem with a crazy person is they don't know the difference between that imaginary world and this real world or this world that's. Maybe it's another dimension. I don't, I mean, I don't want to say it's not real. It could be real. Now that I've done a, I've done a psilocybin now. So I know there's some, there's some alternate worlds out there that are pretty amazing and you can feel some really emotional states that that, you know, I'm. I wasn't able to experience until I did them. You know, it was, it was pretty crazy.

What is the felt experience difference between Braintab and Psilocybin?
Dr. Patrick K. Porter
Well, the biggest difference is that you're still in control with Brain Tap. Sometimes when you take a substance, you know, there's a saying in AA that alcohol is more powerful than you. I don't believe that's true. Because if you keep it on the shelf, it's not more powerful than you. But if you put it in your body, guess what? Now your body's got to process it. So how does your body process it? And sometimes our monkey mind, that default network starts, you know, the fear. If somebody has fear before they do those things, they could have a negative journey because it's your mindset. Oh yeah, they. I've read about these in. The problem is, that's why set and setting is so important. And doing it with, like you said, having a shaman, somebody who can really get your mindset right because your best thinking brought you there. Congratulations. But your best thinking isn't going to get you out of there. You need an upgrade. That's why you're there doing that psychedelic. And as long as you're doing it for the right purpose and you have the right intention and everything's set up right in. Even since, like we use a lot of essential oils here now and things like that for the brain. Because, you know, when, when you're in the environment, they'll use different things in that environment, like a burning fire. A lot of people don't realize that fires burn at 10 Hz frequency and they emit infrared light. And when people say, wow, that fire is mesmerizing, well, of course it's alpha, it's, it's gener. Your body is mirroring that fire. It's like a candle when you're meditating to a candle. So the same thing's true with these. All these substances. Think about it like that fire, it's going into your body and it's vibrating as a frequency. And the cells are then going to either harmonize with it or repel it. So our cells are either in protective mode or they're in growth mode. So we want to. If you open up and you're in growth mode and you express the experience instead of repress the experience, then you're going to have a better experience because anything that happens through you is much better than something that happens to you.
Dave Asprey
It's really hard to put words to a psychedelic journey. Or to a brain tap journey. But you're much less likely to have a negative experience with light and sound. And unless we're dealing with physiological serotonin overload, I don't really believe in negative experiences from psychedelics. It's just you might have hit on something big there and it might have felt scary at the time. But if you practice surrender and you have good integration, it's always a growing experience. And it's when you don't have integration or you just fight it the whole time that it becomes, quote, a bad trip. And so most of the time it's more of a mindset thing. And I have found that people who learn meditation, breath, work the other techniques and heavily meditated, or people who regularly do even Brain tab. Once you know the different states your brain is capable of, if you do decide to go down the psychedelic path, which you do not have to do to enter altered states, but if you decide to go down it, your risks of having an unfortunate experience go down dramatically. So Patrick, I know this is a short episode. Thank you for being a big sponsor at the Biohacking conference, guys. It is biohackingconference.com, the original and largest biohacking conference in the world with the coolest people on the planet, including Dr. Porter. You'll see Steve Aoki, Ryan Holiday and many, many others. Guys like James Nestor. All of these guys I think of. Yeah, all of them have been on the show. So go to biohackingconference.com, use code BRAINTAP30. This is May 28th through 30th in Austin, and in the meantime check out braintap@braintap.com thanks Patrick.

This focused episode dives into how you can induce altered, even psychedelic, states on demand—without traditional substances—using technology that targets your brain with light, sound, and guided visualization. Dave Asprey sits down with Dr. Patrick Porter, creator of Braintap, to explore the science behind these methods, the impact on brain function, sleep, and overall cognition, and how these advances fit into the broader biohacking movement.
"Most people are. The misconception is we need eight hours of sleep. That's not true. Studies show six and a half hours is the optimum..." (00:11)
How light rewrites biology:
Braintap uses low-level retinal flashing, sound, and vibration to synchronize and energize the brain via the frequency following response.
"Now they're proving it actually changes your DNA because... it's absorbing light energy and transmitting that energy as codes." (01:56) "If we can bring that energy up, then we can function better, we can think better, we can perform better. And most importantly...sleep better." (02:52)
Devices mimic nature’s cues:
Rhythmic light and sound patterns can induce desired brainwave states, such as alpha (relaxation), theta (creativity), and gamma (peak cognition).
"When you close your eyes, 30% of your brain actually goes to sleep unless you're activating it with light." (03:55)
"Every illness comes from the field... it comes from energy, it comes from frequency, it comes from what we're emitting." (05:18)
"If we listen to classical music or 10 cycle music... we just get smarter. You don't have to learn anything more." (06:10)
Biohacking communities thrive:
Attendees at biohacking events, especially those using Braintap, often experience increased energy, improved sleep, and even life-changing social/networking outcomes.
"You see all these people with glowing eyes and big smiles and they're not angry... People will... meet their best friends. I’ve seen people meet and get married at the event..." (09:09)
Documented transformative stories:
Dr. Porter shares a striking case: A woman, given six months to live, experienced dramatic shifts after mindset and Braintap work—finding both color and hope in her life again.
"By the third week, she was coming in looking like she was going to a spring party... She started wearing colored clothes again..." (12:38)
"Every cell changes every day. There's an infinite amount of opportunities for you to have health..." (14:32)
"The health care system is the biohacking conference... Health care is taking care of yourself every day." (15:30)
What is gamma?
Once thought abnormal, gamma brainwaves (>40Hz) are now recognized as critical for high-functioning cognitive processes and expanded consciousness.
"That’s where the Buddhist adepts go when they meditate. ...Think about it like you have a marching band and you don't have a bass drum to keep the rhythm of the brain." (21:51)
Tech-induced psychedelia:
Dr. Porter has recorded EEG patterns showing that Braintap sessions can replicate psychedelic brainwave states, such as those experienced with psilocybin, delivering "psychedelic states on-demand."
"People were having these psilocybin experiences with no psilocybin. ...What else can we do now?" (23:20)
DMN shutdown:
Both Braintap and classical psychedelics are shown to "turn off" the DMN—the region that maintains our sense of self and normal constraints of consciousness.
"We’ve actually proven that now. We've proven that we shut down that default mode network. The monkey mind." (26:56)
The importance of integration:
Whether the altered state is tech- or substance-induced, integrating the experience into everyday life is key to long-term benefit.
"You can have the experience—that’s great. But… that’s not reality. So when I come back here, I gotta remember, what do we do here... you need to have the integration." (27:44)
"The biggest difference is that you're still in control with Brain Tap. Sometimes when you take a substance, ...there's a saying in AA that alcohol is more powerful than you. I don't believe that's true." (29:23)
"It's really hard to put words to a psychedelic journey. Or to a brain tap journey. But you're much less likely to have a negative experience with light and sound." (31:13)
On energy and brain aging:
"When we're born...we had 18.1 volts in our brain. ...By the time we're 27, it's about 10.1 volts. If that voltage goes down below 6, we're going to start having dementia. If it goes down below 4, we're going to start having Alzheimer's symptoms. It's all about energy." — Dr. Patrick Porter (02:22)
On the placebo/nocebo effect:
"We should be using the placebo effect in a positive way. ...There's an infinite amount of opportunities for you to have health and opportunity." — Dr. Patrick Porter (14:32)
On living with intention:
"Nobody has the right to tell you when you're going to live or die. Make the decision today that you decide today is your day. ...The shamans say today is the last day of the rest of my life. But I'm going to plan my life as if I'm going to live forever." — Dr. Patrick Porter (15:36)
On the efficiency of sleep:
"Studies show six and a half hours is the optimum and one hour of deep sleep and two hours of REM sleep..." (17:34)
On technological versus substance-induced altered states:
"People were having these psilocybin experiences with no psilocybin...Why don't we just go with the electrical signal and trigger those responses in the brain?" — Dr. Patrick Porter (23:20)
On DMN and consciousness:
"We've proven that we shut down that default mode network. The monkey mind...All states of consciousness are okay in the right environment." — Dr. Patrick Porter (26:56)
