She is a therapist for individuals and couples in her private practice. She held senior-level positions in child welfare, alcoholism treatment, and psychiatry. She was a lecturer on the clinical faculty at the University of California School of Medicine and executive director of a family service agency. Because some people shamed and harassed her after her bipolar illness surfaced, she kept it a secret for a long time while advancing in her career.
