Welcome to the Investor, a podcast where I, Joel Palo Thinkle, your host, dives deep into the minds of the world's most influential institutional investors. In each episode, we sit down with an investor to hear about their journeys and how global markets are driving capital allocation. So join us on this journey as we explore these insights. Okay, excited for this episode because this is an interesting person that I've known for a little while, you know, also a fellow PhD. So I think there's a lot to unpack. So I want to introduce my guest for this week. It is Justin Brody, commit PhD. He is backing breakthrough climate hard tech companies to secure a better future. And essentially he is the general partner of Lichen Ventures. He leveraged his John Hopkins PhD and over 86 angel investments, achieving markups to support entrepreneurs developing technologies to win on economics first. So you know, in this time and you know, kind of what's happening in the news, I think it's super important to be capital efficient, especially when you're thinking about deep technology companies that have a high tech barrier and especially climate and impact. He focuses on climate hard tech companies with competitive unit economics that make clean solutions to the obvious economic choice. He's also building the mid Atlantic climate tech ecosystem. So Justin, hopefully that was a good initial intro and we're going to fill in all the blanks and cover your story and kind of talk about the journey into venture capital. But welcome to the show. Thanks for making time for us.

Yeah, thanks for bringing me on. It's an honor to be among such an amazing guest list that you have going back such a long time so and excited for our new friendship.

Thank you so much, Justin. And you know, for the audience that doesn't know, I also got my PhD several years ago. I mean it's, I think we're coming on a decade now, but, but you know, I still clearly remember the pain of going through it, so would love to kind of unpack the that as well. And I think the benefit of this episode is really learning about your education, kind of some of the career decisions that you made, some of the pivots that you made. We could talk about what it takes to get a PhD. The process, hopefully it's become a little more streamlined over the years, but also how do you pivot into an investing role and then eventually decide to build an investment franchise that could last several decades. So excited to unpack all of that. But Justin, I would love you to kick this off by just sharing in your own words your story. You know, talk to me about kind of Your upbringing, your dynamics with your family, what did you think you wanted to do when you grew up? And a lot of times, a lot of my guests share some of the influence. You know, some, some of our guests come from a business family, so they're counting, you know, counting finance, you know, counting, you know, how much money they're making and looking at the financials at an early age. And then there's some people that come from a non traditional background, like myself and that knew nothing about investing. And then later on they kind of, you know, evolved into that career. So we'd love to know a little more about that, you know, what you studied and, and kind of how you made some of these career decisions. And I might chime in periodically to share some, share some opinions as well.
