You want me to cry on your show and that's not nice because I would never do you like that? Everyone is anointed to do something in the earth, whether it's got platform connected to it or not. Anointed to raise a child. Anointed to run the cameras, to set up the lighting, to make sure that we get the best so that we can reach God's best.
Jamie Kern Lima
Everybody is anointed.
Unknown
Oh, yeah, everybody is anointed.
Sarah Jakes Roberts
These toxic relationships are distractions from discovering what we're anointed to do.
Unknown
For you to say everyone has an anointing in their life, they may not aware of it, they may not be able to see it. How do they know when they're in it? I try to say the majority of the people listening to this that are gonna realize right now they're anointed. Yeah, first time ever. First time ever. Yeah, first time ever.
Jamie Kern Lima
And that's big.
Sarah Jakes Roberts
It's an altitude that only you were created to soar in.
Unknown
Does this whole thing feel like so.
Sarah Jakes Roberts
Much pressure and that you have the opportunity to reclaim your power from anything that has left you feeling powerless?
Unknown
How do you know when God is speaking to you and what that feel like for the person who is an atheist and who is like, hmm, maybe I shouldn't be that certain about anything. Yeah, maybe I'm going to be open. Maybe I'll try to believe and see what happens. How do you start?
Sarah Jakes Roberts
If you test God in this, I promise you he'll show up. But you got to be open.
Unknown
Is there anything a person can do to make them disqualified from God's love? At a granular 101 entry level, what.
Jamie Kern Lima
Is a great way to start to pray?
Unknown
Like, can you break it down?
Sarah Jakes Roberts
And there are things that make our prayers more powerful.
Unknown
Is there any wrong way to pray? What do you say to the person who maybe had a really traumatic experience at church growing up or in their past or with someone who was part of faith and they've kind of veered away and maybe haven't thought about veering back until they stumbled upon this episode. What do you say to them in your life right now, Sarah, what would you say is your biggest insecurity?
Sarah Jakes Roberts
There was something about the public validation of my ministry after the public scrutiny of my disappointment and him saying, this is my girl and I trust you. That made me ugly cry for millions of people to see.
Jamie Kern Lima

How do you learn to trust and surrender? There is a famous quote by rapper 50 Cent's grandma who says, I love this quote, and I literally have it attributed to 50 Cent's grandma, where the quote that says, either pray or worry, but don't do both. And I have to tell you, I have the hardest time. I have the hardest time surrendering because I will pray about something and then I think, oh, and also, I still have to carry it. And also I'm not strong enough to carry it. Now I'm totally screwed. What am I going to do? And then I feel like I have to, like, you know, all the things like, you know, and so. And so for you to have that faith that you will show up with what you have and he will multiply it. Right.
Jamie Kern Lima
I just.
Unknown
I'm imagining the person who's going to walk into work today and going to decide for the first time to have that faith that they're going to raise their hand on that Zoom call or in that boardroom and decide. I don't know if my answer is enough or my idea is enough, but I have something and God's going to multiply it or I belong in this room or any of those things, like, to have that faith. How do you. Or do you ever start to feel like it's on you and all of a sudden you can't?
Jamie Kern Lima
And then how do you get back.
Unknown
To that place of trusting?
Sarah Jakes Roberts
I do feel like. And I do feel like those moments where I feel like, this is on me, this is on me, and I realize that that is my pride and my ego sometimes wanting it to be on me. Because if it's on me and it turns out well, then I am worthy because I performed well. If it's on me and it turns out well, then I was smart and I did make a good decision. I realized that my pride and ego are hungry in those moments. And so what I am surrendering is not necessarily the outcome as much as I am the need for me to be awarded for having enough or my value increasing because I had enough. And I have found that through humility that I am able to approach situations with an honesty and a clarity that is not afforded to me when I am trying to have it all together or to make it my own responsibility. I also believe that it makes me a better leader because especially in, you know, 40,000 women came to Globe Life Field. I really had very little to do with that. When you see the team that pulled it off, and if I go into it thinking that this is all on me, I miss out on the opportunity to see how heavy it is for the team connected to it. So maybe it's not all on me because God gave me a team. And maybe if I can stop seeing that it's all on me, we could come together as a team and be a better force for what God's called us to do. And so I think that releasing the pride of it's on me. I got to figure it out. When I preach sometimes I got nothing. And I'm like, all right, God, here we go. I got nothing. What can you give me in this moment that doesn't make me seem smart or eloquent, but simply you get the glory. Having the accurate goal, like, I don't want this to be where I look good. I don't want this to necessarily be where this book has to be a New York Times bestseller. God, I just wanted to change one person's life. And the moment we get that one comment, like, to really cherish that instead of saying, I've got more and more and more that I need to do. So I think really purifying what success is to make it about what I believe matters to God and not necessarily what matters to men, helps me to have humility instead of pride and pursuit, where I could be effective, but maybe not as grand of a platform, but at least I was obedient and effective.
Unknown
How do you know when God is speaking to you? And what does that feel like?
Sarah Jakes Roberts
I create space to listen. I think a lot of times we want God to speak, but we want him to interrupt our world in order to make it happen. But for me, it came from practice. It didn't happen for me in church, as I've expressed. But I would turn on a music that made me feel something. There was a song that made me feel something, even if you can't identify it. But when I hear this person preach. When I hear this person sing, I feel something. And to create a space where you can take that feeling and sit and sit in it with silence and meditation, to discover, like, what is this I am feeling and what is it trying to inform me about? What's it trying to bring up in my life? And once I had that one encounter where I was like, this one song just. It makes something come alive in my soul. I started chasing more of those feelings. And then it came to a space where, like, I didn't necessarily need it in music, but I could sense it. Like, I would have a conversation with you and something would happen in my soul where I'm like, that's not just Jamie, like, God sending me a message. That's not just a regular person leaving a comment. That's God sending me a message. And so creating space where you can fine tune that feeling and then become sensitive to the way that it shows up throughout our day, throughout our jobs and our work, to me is how I became more attuned to hearing it more often. So for me, I think everyone's different, but for me, it's in my soul. Like, I just feel a deep knowing that someone has said something to me that I have not even communicated in words and that God has sent me something to soothe a place where I'm aching. And, yeah, now I just. I talk to God like, I talk to my bestie. You know, I'm randomly like, God, I need your help. And I believe he's listening. And then I look for the ways his help shows up in my life. And I'm like, you heard me, I see you. God gave me a God wink. You know what I mean? He sent me a wink. And I just continue to see those throughout my day.
Unknown
For the person who is an atheist and who is like, hmm, maybe I shouldn't be that certain about anything. Maybe I'm gonna be open. Maybe. Maybe they're all of a sudden just thinking, maybe I'll try to believe and see what happens. How do you start?
Sarah Jakes Roberts
Well, everyone's journey is different, but the key word you said was open. And I think to really fine tune what it is you're open to. I am open to the possibility that God cares about me. I am open to the possibility that God causes all things to work together. I think if you can fine tune that thing that you are open to and then, you know, speak into the atmosphere, what it is you're open to witnessing with your eyes or experiencing in your soul, and then just let God do the Rest like, I'm open to the possibility that I've been wrong, that you exist. And so, because I'm whispering this in my heart and my soul, I'm going to need you to show up in a way that makes it undeniable to me that you're real. I will go a step further and say, for someone, I think it is going to require a step of faith. And a step of faith could simply be going into an environment where you know or have heard that people have encounters with God. And maybe it's not a traditional church environment, maybe it's a small group, maybe it's group therapy. Maybe somebody says, when I get to the top of that cliff, I know for sure that God is real. Whatever that space is, to just take the step of faith and say, you know what, it's like a Netflix seven day trial. Like, God, I'm gonna give you a seven day trial period. I'm gonna try this, I'm gonna try that, I'm gonna try that. And I'm gonna see if I can feel what other people feel, if I can know what other people know about you. And if you test God in this, I promise you he'll show up. But you gotta be open. You can't do it to prove that you're still an atheist. Cause like, if you wanna be an atheist, child, be an atheist. But if you're really in a space where you're open and you're like, I just wanna know, I could be wrong, I could be right. But I just wanna know from there. God does amazing things with openness.
Unknown
Seven day Netflix trial.
Sarah Jakes Roberts
Yes.
Unknown
That's brilliant.
Sarah Jakes Roberts
Yeah.
Unknown
Is there anything a person can do to make them disqualified from God's love?
Sarah Jakes Roberts
No, child, listen, I keep looking in scripture just to make sure. Because I'm just waiting for him to like, pull the rug up underneath me and be like, gotcha. But when I see scripture, I see he tells. He tells us exactly what to do in scripture. We do the exact opposite. He's like, I'll give you another chance. I'm talking murder, I'm talking rape, incest. Like, I. All of the things that we think to ourselves, oh, that, that one ought to do it. And he's like, you know what? I've still got grace for you. My grace is sufficient for you. And you know, his strength is made perfect in our weakness. Part of the reason why there's nothing that we can do to disqualify ourselves from God is because to disqualify ourselves from God is to say that God's grace cannot make up the difference from wherever we're starting from, but his grace can meet us no matter where we're starting from. If we're honest and we're open and we'll say, let's see what you can do, grace can make up the rest of the distance.
Unknown
Okay, Talking about starting from so many of us, we're not taught how to pray and we don't know how to pray. And then we think, are there rules to praying? And can I get it wrong? And what if I don't do it right? And what if I was raised in a church where I watched other people pray, but I don't even know how they did that or what they did? For the person listening who has not prayed in a while or has not felt anything when they do or has not prayed ever at a granular 101 entry level, what is a great way.
Jamie Kern Lima
To start to pray?
Unknown
Like, can you break it down? How do I pray? How does someone pray for the first time? What do they do?
Sarah Jakes Roberts
I will say there are definitely people who pray who make prayer look intimidating. And as someone who grew up in church and was exposed to the intimidating prayer methods, I told totally relate to someone feeling like, I don't want to mess this up, so maybe I should say nothing at all. I'm raising our, we're in the thick of raising our 14 year old and our 8 year old and we pray in the car with them every morning and they have a prayer that they recite. But then we also have a moment where we like, freestyle and I try to lead in the freestyle praying because I want them to know that you can come to God no matter like how raw and real it is. And so sometimes if the girls have had an argument, I'll say, let's pray. And I'll say, God, well, this is awkward. There are feelings here. There's some anger, there's some hurt. And we know that you want us to have healing and joy and love in our family. So God help us to see the ways that your spirit can make up the difference. It is a conversation with God and there are things that make our prayers more powerful. The more that you're exposed to scripture, you can say, like God, in your word, you promise that no weapon formed against me will prosper. Well, there's a weapon formed in my life right now, and it feels like it's prospering. Help me to understand the ways that you can work this out for my good. Like, I believe that scripture and worship intensifies Our, or, I won't say, intensifies, but I think that it adds more depth to our prayers. But if you just give God the deepest level that you have, God can work with that. It doesn't have to be eloquent. It doesn't have to be in King James Version. It can be in the language that you know the best. And that starting point is a beautiful place to just have dialogue with God. But just make sure that when you pray, it's not just the space where you say, God, give me, give me, give me. And don't just let it be the space where you just offload. Take time and say, God, whatever it is that you want to pour back into me, help me to be open to hear the way that you answer this prayer.
Unknown
Is there any wrong way to pray?
Sarah Jakes Roberts
I wouldn't cuss. I wouldn't do a whole lot of cussing, you know, you knew. Sometimes some words may slip, you know, But I wouldn't go into it intentionally doing a lot of cussing. But I think that if you are sincerely trying to connect with God, that you give God what you have. God knows your heart, even the words you don't. There's a scripture, and I don't know it by heart. My husband could throw it into the chat if he. If he sees it. But about the spirit translating our prayers like the spirit of God takes what we're praying and translates it. So we may be praying like God. I need you to help the girl start arguing. But the spirit translates it into, I need McKenzie to no longer feel insecure about X, Y, and Z. God is so good to us that us just opening up our heart allows for that interpreter to open up. What the real need is the spirit is connecting with the spirit. And when the spirit of God connects with our spirit, there's a translation and an exchange that takes place where we give him our burdens and we receive peace because we know someone else is carrying that thing that we brought before the Lord.
Unknown
What do you say to the person who maybe had a really traumatic experience at church growing up or in their past or with someone who was part of faith and they've kind of veered away and maybe haven't thought about veering back until they stumbled upon this episode? What do you say to them?
Sarah Jakes Roberts
Thank you for trusting me. Thank you for trusting Jamie with this part of your life. Sometimes you need some distance so that you can more accurately separate God from people. It's hard when you're in a place of faith because it seems like it's all the same thing. But if you can begin to see people for people, it helps you to understand that God and people have had a long journey of trying to get things right with each other. And the people were always on the side of messing things up. And God was always there to say, I can help you clean it up. And I would say that God wants you. Wants to help you clean up the mess that other people made in your life. He wants to show you that he's not like them and that he's more faithful and kind and loving than any of those encounters that you had with other people. And sometimes the safest space that we meet God is in the privacy of our home. And then when we go in this space of the faith, we don't have an expectation for them to be God. Our expectation is to experience God without them becoming God. And then that way, it helps us to more accurately categorize the people who create environments for God to keep them from becoming our God. Mm. Yeah, that's okay.
Unknown
Yes, for sure. What you know, in your life right now, Sarah, what would you say is your biggest insecurity?
Sarah Jakes Roberts
I need to stop eating food all the time. I be eating when I'm not hungry. And that is showing up in some spaces. That's probably a little bit more surface. But my deepest insecurity right now is probably wondering whether or not I can live up to the demand of where my ministry is projected to go. I think that's my biggest insecurity. Yeah, the demand of it. I think that I have seen a lot of different ministries crumble at the demand. And not necessarily that the ministry crumbled, but maybe their souls crumbled, their families crumbled, their joy crumbled. And I don't want that. I choose not to have that. And so my biggest insecurity is that I would be so blinded by the metrics, the numbers, the real, the reality of this being things that have business elements connected to them, and I have to be responsible for those and make good decisions, but also that I don't want this to be a business. I don't want to lose the core of what this is really about. And so my greatest insecurities, making sure that I stay in this sweet spot of purity and authenticity, that I never forget that this is about creating a space for people to encounter God for as long as God wants to use me to be that person and to not fall into this idea of I've got to stay on top or I've got to keep climbing, and nothing's enough. I just. I don't desire that pressure.
Unknown
I have two pictures I want to show you and they were powerful moments.
Sarah Jakes Roberts
Ah, yes.
Unknown
So this one, you have tears streaming down your face.
Sarah Jakes Roberts
Yes.
Unknown
You and your husband are both standing there. Can you talk about this moment and what you were thinking and feeling when this happened?
Sarah Jakes Roberts
So this is when my husband and I were. It's called an installation service and we were appointed as the assistant pastors at the Potter's House, Dallas, which is the church that I grew up in. And I have tears streaming down my face because I invited my 13 year old girl to be a part of this service. And I wanted her to see that the same space where she felt shame and pain was also the place where God always knew to expect this. And it was healing and beautiful and. Yeah, that's what's happening there.
Unknown
So many people watch that moment. And can you share, like inside what you were thinking and feeling during that?
Sarah Jakes Roberts
There's a song that I actually, I made a TikTok video, like the day that I got ready for this. And there's this song called Yet. And all I hear, even right now, when I think about it are like the words to that song. It's like, God, don't give up on me yet. I know I'm not your best, but I'm trying, so don't give up on me yet. And I think that in that moment I was definitely thinking, like, oh, God, like, this is a big moment. This is an incredible opportunity to be considered to lead these great people and probably that I don't have what it takes, but I'm willing to bring my little. So don't give up on me.
Unknown
Mm.
Sarah Jakes Roberts
Yeah.
Unknown
All right, I'm gonna trade you photos.
Sarah Jakes Roberts
Okay. Oh, this.
Unknown
Well, you talk about this moment where the press loves to say Bishop T.D. jakes passed the torch.
Sarah Jakes Roberts
Yeah.
Unknown
To you. And can you just share, first of all, share what's happening there and in that moment and just what that felt like.
Sarah Jakes Roberts
Well, before I ever hosted any event that filled a stadium, my father was probably one of the preeminent voices for women's liberation, especially in the context of ministry, where many churches, you know, didn't allow women preachers, didn't create spaces for women to have their own healing and events like my father started over 30 years ago. He started something called Woman Thou art Loose. And he would preach to women about things that they had gone through and encourage them to walk with boldness and to no longer be ashamed or afraid. And it grew. He hosted 80,000 women in the Georgia Dome. But this is in 2022 and he had decided as a result of, I think, seeing other voices emerging, that he felt it was time that Woman Thou Art Loose come to an end. And so this was the last event for Woman Thou Art Loose. We were at the closing session of what I thought would just be a final farewell service in which he called me up on stage and basically told me that he felt like the same grace that was on his life is on my life and that he wanted me to continue to carry on the torch of women's ministry and to help women to come to know who they are in God. And he there's this beautiful ceremony and he laid hands on me, which in our tradition of faith, it's just like a passing of anointing of strength to continue to take that mission further. And then he had this beautiful. He gave me his jacket. It was a mess. I cried and cried and cried. But in this moment, believe it or not, I was crying not so much about the passing of the baton because I didn't start Woman Evolve thinking that my dad was going to give me anything. I didn't have that entitlement or expectation. What really, really wrecked me is that like Woman Thou Art Loose represents, I believe, what catapulted my dad's ministry into new heights. I saw him preaching until his feet were literally bleeding during this conference. I saw him sacrifice and surrender and he was taking a huge portion of his life's work and telling me, I trust you with it and I trust all of these people who've gathered here to follow you into whatever next is. And yet what really made me emotional was that my dad trusted me again. I think that was a moment where like my 13 year old girl wasn't invited but ended up kicking the door down. Because even though I think I knew that as a woman and as a wife and a mother and a business owner, that my father respected me and trusted me. There was something about the public validation of my ministry after the public scrutiny of my disappointment and him saying, this is my girl and I trust you, that made me ugly cry for millions of people to see.
Jamie Kern Lima

It was him putting every everything that like the calling on his life.
Sarah Jakes Roberts
Yeah.
Unknown
And saying like you're the one.
Sarah Jakes Roberts
Yeah.
Unknown
I trust you.
Sarah Jakes Roberts
I trust you.
Unknown
Continue it.
Sarah Jakes Roberts
I trust you.
Unknown
What did that feel like when he put his jacket on you?
Sarah Jakes Roberts
You want me to cry on your show and that's not nice because I would never do you like that. It felt like every thread of broken trust from our relationship had been collected and never lost. It felt like. It felt like I always knew to expect something like this from you. It felt like I went ahead of you so you don't have to sacrifice what I sacrificed to make it happen. It felt like. It felt like someone has led the way. So Context is we have this moment. And he had maybe, I think it was 20,000 women at this event. And I hosted Woman Evolve the next year, and we have 40,000 people who registered. And it was the day that the conference was supposed to start. It was Thursday at like maybe 4:00. And there are like 12,000 people had checked in. And I told my dad, I'm like, there's only 12,000 people checked in. Like, what if they're not coming? And he was like, no, this is exactly about how many people should be checked in at this time. Like, don't worry, you're going to be fine. And I don't think my biggest thing was, like, what if they don't come? As much as, like, I have a stadium. And there's nothing worse than, like, preaching in a huge empty room. Like, if only 12,000 of us, only 12,000 of us are going to be here, can we be in a room that fits 12,000? But he had context because of his covering. He knew what I should expect, what was normal, what wasn't normal. And him putting his coat around me was like this promise that for as much as I can tell you what's normal and what's not, I'm going to cover you. And he. And that's been true every thread, A.
Unknown
Broken trust was not lost. It was gathered.
Sarah Jakes Roberts
Yeah.
Unknown
And then his coat is put over you.
Sarah Jakes Roberts
Yeah, yeah.
Unknown
Do you feel in that moment? Because I remember I talked to you on the phone, I think, a few days after, and you're like, I'm not. I don't want to give the coat back.
Sarah Jakes Roberts
Oh, and he's not getting that coat back. He asked for it back. I was like, sir, one thing. You're not getting that coat back. You shouldn't have thrown it around me. You can never. And then he had it, like, in that woman evolved. He showed it to me. He'd gotten it framed. And I was like, oh, this is so nice. Cause we're in front of people. But then I told him, like, this can't stay in the frame. I want. I want to be able to wrap myself up in this coat when things get cold, I don't want it hanging on the wall.
Unknown
Where do you keep it?
Sarah Jakes Roberts
In my closet.
Unknown
And he also dropped oil. He also put oil. Can you talk about that and what that meant?
Sarah Jakes Roberts
Yeah. So that is a traditional way of anointing. So the oil represents anointing. And that was just a representation of, I think, an added anointing. Because I think part of the reason why it even happened is he was like, you know, you're anointed for this, but for this next stage, this next level, you're going to need additional oil. And so he poured oil. I made a joke because I had on a certain wig then, and I was like, I'm never going to wash this wig because I'm not going to be anointed unless I wear this this week. So he poured oil on me just as a sign that you can't do this without anointing. You can't do this because you just speak well or because you just know the right things to say. There are some things that you can only do in the earth if you are anointed to do them. And that anointing may not come from oil being poured on your head in that way, but there is an oil that is already on you that you have to acknowledge, trust and respect for what God's called you to do.
Unknown
Will you explain the word anointing for anointing?
Sarah Jakes Roberts
Anointing is the full essence of God that shows up when you are aligned in his will and purpose for your life. It is the spirit of God. It's when we surrender to the spirit of God working through us. Christ was the anointed one. He was the one who was called to bring restoration and redemption between humanity and God. And so when we function in our anointing, we have an opportunity to bring connection between God and his people, to stand in the gap. Certainly not in the way that Christ has, but in our own unique way, we have all been anointed. And that's why I'm always trying to make sure people understand that when we do the work of releasing the things that we know limit us to live a life where we say, you know what? I am made in the image of God, and I want to reflect God's image in whatever I do, then what we are anointed to do is undeniable. And it's not necessarily speaking. Like, there is a photographer I work with, she is anointed with that camera. I have a silent she is anointed. She hears from God about the perfect lighting, the perfect angle. He knows the colors, he knows the shoes for the moment when we align ourselves, where we're like, my life is not my own. My life exists to shine God's light into the earth. And then we show up in this space and we're like, God, allow my gifts and my talents to not just be something that makes something look good, but takes it to an anointed level of work that Is when we're saying, I want the spirit of God to breathe on this talent that God has given me and change a life to make it easier to reach a life, to make it more palatable, to go after a life that thought that they should have been rejected. And when we see it that way, that my assistants, they facilitate the anointing. They are anointed to make sure that my life is easier or organized in such a way that the anointing can flow without disorganization or miscommunication. Everyone is anointed to do something in the earth, whether it's got platform connected to it or not. Anointed to raise a child, anointed to run the cameras, to set up the lighting, to make sure that we get the best so that we can reach God's best.
Unknown
Everybody is anointed. Oh, yeah, everybody is anointed.
Sarah Jakes Roberts
We got to create. We have to facilitate lives that allow the anointing that God already wants to pour on us to flourish. But God, we're all anointed in some way. But not all of us do the work of making sure that anointing can flow. Because we're dealing with trauma. We're dealing with pain, disappointment, anger, all of the things. I get it. I was there. But when we say, you know what? My life has to be more than surviving. My life has to be about doing something with this short window of time that I have that makes someone see that God is real. So first, God, show up in my life, Help me to experience it for myself. Heal me, touch me, restore me. Show me who you are for myself. And once you experience that, it's pretty difficult to not want to tell at least one more person. Like, did you know you didn't have to be, like, all the way raggedy out here? Like, God will clean you up. He'll turn things around. He'll give you vision and focus. Like, you can be loyal. You can have integrity. Like, it's possible. And so as many people as we can reach, we have a responsibility to reach.
Unknown
This is gonna be such a huge aha moment for so many people who.
Jamie Kern Lima
Think, oh, someone else is anointed.
Unknown
And there's many people that just learned that word today. Yeah, just learned that word today, Right. And to hear you break it down like, this is really powerful because a lot of people believe the lie. I don't have anything special to offer.
Sarah Jakes Roberts
There is a difference between being gifted and talented and being anointed. When you are anointed, God can use your gifts and talents, but we See, people, music is a great example. There are people who, you know, are gifted to sing, but what they're singing doesn't necessarily change a life. They're talented to produce a film, but they're not necessarily producing the type of content that changes a life. It doesn't make them any less talented. It doesn't change that they have a gift. But when we talk about changing a life, when we talk about bringing light into darkness, we cannot do that on our own. We need to partner with God to make that happen. And when we partner with God, it awakens our anointing. It awakens our willingness to say, God, you know what? Just flow through me and use whatever I had to make sure that what you want to see happen in the earth is able to happen. And so when I'm getting ready to speak, I'm like, God, I've studied, I have prepared. I tried to rest, and I had a protein shake. I've done everything I can do. Now, what's on you? And use anything that you need to use in order to make sure that you reach your people. And so you can be gifted and talented. And maybe you have experienced success with your gifts and your talents, but have you experienced transformation because you took those gifts and talents, laid them at the feet of Jesus, and you're like, you know what? I want to partner with you to see what we can do. And maybe it's something that we're doing on the corner, maybe it's something we're doing on the block, maybe it's something we're doing in the stadium. But as long as I get to do it with God, I'm just glad to be in the number.
Unknown
So the difference between gifted and talented, now everyone's anointed, but you're super talent that you're gifted or skilled in may not be the thing you're anointed in.
Sarah Jakes Roberts
I will say that everyone has an anointing, but not everyone is awakened to that anointing. And not everyone facilitates an environment that protects that anointing. And so it doesn't mean that you lose the anointing. It just means that you can't really exercise it because you're not in an environment. Some of these toxic relationships are distractions from discovering what we're anointed to do. That's why the most powerful thing, when I said, I think I can do better than this, like, it felt like it was my own idea, but it was my anointing saying, I want to be released in the earth, but I can't be released in this environment. I want to show you what all God's placed inside of you, But I can't do it if you stay in this environment. And so sometimes what we think is a good idea for our own healing, healing is just the starting point. Once you're healed, you get to partner. Once you're healed, you get to transform. You get to reach and touch other people. But you have to get to that space of doing the work to get to the healing so that, that you can then say, you know, I'm a church girl. So we say, here I am, Lord, use me. You know, here I am, Lord, send me. Here I am, Lord, I want to partner with you for whatever time I have left.
Unknown
And for a person listening right now who says, oh, you know, this is what I thought my purpose or my offering is to the world because I'm very talented in it. And are you saying the distinguishment between that and how you know it's part of your anointing is. Do you. Is it. Is it being used in the service of someone else?
Sarah Jakes Roberts
It is possible that your purpose is a part of your anointing, but just a part of it. So sometimes we limit ourselves to just the gifts, talents, and purpose that we know. But when we say, lord, I believe that I am anointed, God, I believe I'm anointed to do something with you in the earth. I believe my life is not random. It is not by coincidence. I wanna give my life to serving what you're doing in the earth. And you can use whatever God may use that purpose, but God may also show you a purpose. You didn't even know you had a gift. You. I am not a speaker. It is not my favorite thing to do. And it is the thing that most people know me for. That is not me. That is the anointing. I have talked and talked and talked before and ran out of words in my own strength. But God gives me something to continue saying. That is not me. That is the anointing. Like when we go off and we turn these cameras off, my husband will tell you, I'm going to be in the room, like reading a book, not saying anything at all. Don't just pass me a microphone. I have nothing to say. But when I say, God, I'm going to partner with you and we're going to do or say something and see what happens. For some reason, lives are changed. That's not my talent. That's God showing up and something that he uses through my gifts or talent.
Unknown
For you to say Everyone has an anointing on their life. They may not be aware of it, they may not be able to see it. How do they know when they're in it?
Sarah Jakes Roberts
Oh, there's just this. No limitations. Anything I could do, any, I could do anything this moment requires. I. My fears don't exist when I'm fully aligned with whatever God's called me to do in the moment. Like when we leave this interview, I could pick it apart in my own weakness and my own insecurity. I could say, oh my gosh, you didn't sound smart, you didn't do this, you didn't do that. But right now, in this moment, like I am fully aligned with who I'm supposed to be in God. When I am up speaking, like, I don't have time to worry about my weight, I don't have time to worry about the kids homework or the emails I need to send. I am fully aligned with what God wants to do in the moment. And it feels like freedom and it feels like joy and it feels like confidence and power. Like God could pull and use anything for me and I could do it. It is the full expression of faith, no fear. And I know that it's not just when I'm speaking because I have friends who like do graphic design and they just get into this zone where like they haven't eaten for hours or they've just been so locked in creating something, this vision that they're trying to get from outside of them and on. So I think it's when you're just completely locked in to the moment of partnering with God to create a new normal or a new identity for someone who's been limited and restricted. I hope that made sense.
Unknown
It makes so much sense to me. I think, I think sometimes people that may not know what it is, have experienced it in what they call flow or in what they. The feeling of purpose. And I've found too that for a lot of people it's not the thing that they are the most skilled in. It's like sometimes it's the thing that they like went through and then made it through and now they're helping someone else make it through it. And they just feel in that sense of like, I feel exactly what you're describing when I speak or when I'm talking one on one with a stranger and I'm hearing their story and I am so in it that nothing else exists. And I feel like I don't even need to know what to say, but I'm supposed to be there. So that they hear what they need to hear, probably from themselves.
Sarah Jakes Roberts
Yeah, right, Right.
Unknown
Right in that moment. But it's like this. Like, for me, when I feel it, it feels like exactly what you said. Like, all my problems don't. Even my worries, like, who I. What I'm doing wrong.
Sarah Jakes Roberts
None of that exists.
Jamie Kern Lima
None of that exists.
Unknown
And it's like, about something that is so much greater than myself. And I think what I'm so excited about with what you just shared is there are going to be so many people, I'm going to venture to say, the majority of the people listening to this that are going to realize right now they're anointed.
Sarah Jakes Roberts
Yeah.
Unknown
First time ever. First time ever.
Sarah Jakes Roberts
Yeah.
Unknown
First time ever.
Sarah Jakes Roberts
Yeah.
Jamie Kern Lima
And that's big.
Sarah Jakes Roberts
It's an altitude that only you were created to soar in. You know, where everyone else, like, would need an oxygen mask. Like, you're just out there, like, deep breaths. Cause I'm anointed for this. I can remember being the moment where I started preaching and I was like, I'm anointed for this. I'm anointed for this. There are times where, like, I'll find out that I'm speaking and I have absolutely nothing. And I start reading my Bible and praying and God gives me a message, and I'm like, I'm anointed for this. I'm anointed to preach on Sunday. I wasn't sure when they called me, I wasn't sure. I've been wondering, maybe someone else needs the microphone this Sunday. But then I get that word and I'm like, no one can preach on Sunday but me, because I'm anointed for this.
Unknown
And I love too, like, it's a feeling and it's a knowing. And you may have it and you may feel it and know it. And for some reason, that particular message does well or doesn't do well, does that, Blah, blah, blah, whatever. But you know, and you feel it. It's independent. Would you say it's independent of anything on the outside?
Sarah Jakes Roberts
Oh, for sure. I always ask myself one question. Did you say what God told you to say? Did you show up in the full anointing of what God told you to say or do?
Unknown
Yeah.
Sarah Jakes Roberts
If you did that.
Unknown
Yeah.
Sarah Jakes Roberts
Then the numbers don't matter.
Unknown
Yeah.
Sarah Jakes Roberts
I have felt this. This is going to sound hilarious, but I have felt that, though, even when cooking, like, there are sometimes when I'm cooking as a mom where I'm just, like, getting the food on the table, like, I don't have time to Be anointed to cook. You gotta get in bedtime. You're anointed to go to bed. So I don't have anointed, I don't have time to be anointed to cook. But there are moments when I have hours in the kitchen. I'm making a meal for my family and I can just feel like the way things are coming together, the way the kids are laughing in the background, like, this is going to be an amazing meal. And I'm like praying over the food and the kids sit down to eat. And now we're like talking about their day and their emotions and what they've been struggling with. And I'm like, there was something anointed about us having this meal right now for such a time as this. Like, I was anointed to create this environment for them.
Unknown
You and your husband pastoring one of the most popular churches in all of LA and then moving to Dallas, pastoring the Potter's house, having your father, you know, Bishop T.D. jakes, one of the most famous preachers in the world, put his coat onto you, choose you. And you talk about your insecurity, about the demand in your ministry. Does this whole thing feel like so much pressure sometimes?
Sarah Jakes Roberts
Sometimes not. Most of the time, no. But sometimes yes. Most of the time, no. Because at the end of the daylight, God knows what he's got with me. So if I'm going down with the ship, I'm going down with the ship. And if we're going up to a new height, then we're going up to a new height. But I don't feel pressure because I didn't pretend to get here and I didn't ask to be here. Which means that for some reason God's placed me here. Here. And he knows who I am and he knows who they are. And I'm just going to bring my little. And we're going to see what happened. Literally every time I preach, I'm just like, we'll see what happens. We'll see what happens.
Unknown
Do you believe you're worthy of it or anything? Because you have a trust that because God brought it into your life, like, you're worthy of it?
Sarah Jakes Roberts
Yeah, that's pretty much. That's pretty much all I've got. Because if I just look at the paper and the resume and biography, like, it's very much so not giving worthy through my eyes. But when we talk about that God factor, you know, I have to trust what God knows over what I believe over what I feel. And God keeps breathing on it.
Unknown
I keep thinking about how it is.
Jamie Kern Lima
Such.
Unknown
I think, I think that in our lives so often we don't become what we want, we become what we believe we're worthy of. I think our self worth can be our ceiling to so many things. And when I wrote my book worthy, there's over 20 tools on how do you build self worth? Well, my favorite one that I think is the most powerful is when you learn to believe God's word over your own self doubt. And, and also I realized there's a lot of people that don't yet have faith. And so the thing that I just want to, I guess, celebrate in every person today who does have faith, even just a little, is like, this is the shortcut.
Sarah Jakes Roberts
This is the shortcut.
Unknown
This is that secret ingredient. This is that competitive advantage. This is that everything over, I think over how to believe you're worthy and how to believe you're worthy of walking in the room and how to believe. And thank you for breaking this down in so many instances in your life. Because so many rooms in my life I have not felt worthy of being in or I have potential friendships or different things like that I've sabotaged, not knowing why till years later sabotage them because I didn't think I was worthy of them. And so, so like I feel like so much of my life's journey and so many of the things that have.
Jamie Kern Lima
Happened to me have been me figuring.
Unknown
Out how to believe I'm worthy of them. And my relationship with God is.
Jamie Kern Lima
That's the thing.
Unknown
Like, that's the thing. There's a whole lot of other tools. There's a whole lot of other work. There's a whole lot of other things people can do to eventually build their self worth. But for me, that is like the thing. And I think without that it is a hard uphill, long, long, long, long, long road. I want to ask you about power Moves.
Sarah Jakes Roberts
Okay.
Unknown
Power Moves. Power Moves. Ignite your confidence and become a force. Ignite your confidence and become a force. Power Moves. Sarah Jakes Roberts. So excited for this.
Sarah Jakes Roberts
Thank you.
Unknown
Yeah, yeah. For the person listening today who needs.
Jamie Kern Lima
This book, who needs this book in.
Unknown
Their life right now, how is it going to impact their life when they get at home?
Sarah Jakes Roberts
Power Moves is going to help them reconcile that the things that have made them feel stuck, stagnant or powerless had real power. That it isn't something that should be trivialized. What you're up against, what you're worried about. You have to recognize that it is a strong opponent component, but also that power Moves and that you have the opportunity to reclaim your power from anything that has left you feeling powerless. Our journey here on earth is to reconnect with the ultimate power source. You are created to feel powerful, to not feel small or little or silly or inconsequential. You were created to feel powerful. And the only reason why you don't feel powerful is because there has been something that has happened to you, something that has been said over you that clamped your flow of power. But it is okay. No matter how powerful it is, you can ignite your confidence and still become a force. But we got to go back and maybe do a little bit of work to help you reclaim that power. And once you do it, you become a force because you're walking in your truth. You wrestled with lies, you wrestled with despair, came out on the other side and then you get to coach someone else to do the same. And that is what makes you a force.
Unknown
I keep just listening to your words and imagining the embers into a fire. Yeah, the embers that we all have into a full out flame. A force of a flame for the, I believe, leave. If somebody is listening to us right now or watching this right now, it is not an accident. No, it is not an accident. And can you share or speak a prayer over their life today?
Sarah Jakes Roberts
Well, God, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you for taking the time to see a about our friends who are watching. Thank you for using all of the technology and resources to create an environment that says I'm coming after you because I want to see you do well and thrive. God, I pray that you would help them to remember how to open their heart again. Somebody's watching and maybe their heart has been closed for so long that they don't even know how to open it again. And yet we chiseled at it today. God, I pray that you would make them sensitive to the moments that chip away at their heart, that chip away at that lock that has kept them bound so that they can experience the love that awaits them. And God, I pray that as you continue to make them sensitive that you would remind them of the restoration that awaits them. That they don't have to be afraid of any further loss, but only gain from here. A gaining of confidence, of worth, of value, of power that will radically change them from the inside out. I thank you God for a fresh identity and fresh fire falling on them even now. And I believe that there's going to be a suddenly moment where there is an instant accumulation of all of the good words, all of the anointed words. Words that have been spoken over them, coming like a tidal wave and carrying them to where they should have always been all along. In Jesus name, Amen.
Unknown
Amen. Amen. I love you. I am so grateful you're here. And I always do. A special gift on the Jamie Karen Lima show.
Sarah Jakes Roberts
Okay.
Unknown
So. Okay, this is for you to open. And I talked about my red shoes that remind me of Dorothy of the wizard of Oz. Because we all have what we need inside of us. We all have what we need inside of us. Plus, they match.
Sarah Jakes Roberts
Do you know what size shoe I wear? These are great. Absolutely amazing.
Unknown
Here's my hope. Can we trade shoes right now? And each write a message on the white part for each other. And then every time I wear my.
Sarah Jakes Roberts
I am going to think of you, Jamie. Think of you. Absolutely.
Unknown
And I'll wear them with my sweats and no makeup, girl.
Sarah Jakes Roberts
I'm going to put them on as soon as I leave here. Okay. Okay. This is the best. I'm going to wear my shoes and my backpack.
Jamie Kern Lima
