Joshua shouted, his face aglow and euphoric. His jaw quivered with gratitude to God.

God has given us the victory. He has done this. He told you to be strong and courageous and look what has happened. This is what's possible when you trust the mighty hand of the Lord.

The dust settled over the rubble of Jericho. Those in the city who were spared were given sufficient supplies. The day was drawing to a close and the men were gathering the spoils of war, taking anything valuable to store for the rest of Israel.

[Joshua]

Ignore the idols and shrines. Cast aside anything that would cause your heart to stumble. Remember that the Lord has won this for us. Don't taint our victory with greed.

[Narrator]

The men did as they were told, casting graven statues of foreign gods into the fire. They kept precious jewels, gold and silver for themselves. They would need it to feed their families for the journey ahead. Joshua looked up and breathed a sigh of relief. Thank you. Since the death of Moses, Joshua wondered if he was fit for the role of leader. He certainly wasn't Moses. He was his own man, but still called by God for great things. Joshua turned to an abandoned temple. It had gold laced around its pillars and bronze statues guarded the entrance. He turned to one of the men and gestured for him to follow.

Hey, Ken, open over here. Let's see what's in here.

[Narrator]

Achan briskly walked beside Joshua. Achan was a shifty fellow, but a skilled warrior when he listened. Together, they entered the temple. It reeked of rotten sacrifices and stale incense. Spoiled wine leaked from the coffers. In the center of the temple was an altar. On it sat some gold engraved idols and piles of gold coins. Joshua winced with disgust.

Let's burn this place.

[Joshua]

There's nothing valuable here.

[Narrator]

Joshua turned and began walking out. But Achan was still eyes fixed on the altar. His brows were raised to the top of his head and his heart beat heavily in his chest. It was as if the idols were calling to him. Whispers of greed crept into his heart as he slowly reached for the idols.

[Joshua]

Akan, are you coming?

[Narrator]

Joshua's words interrupted his trance. Aiken shook his head and smiled.

Oh, yes, of course. I'm coming.

Achan joined Joshua's side and walked with him out of the temple.

Come back here with a torch and burn the place. All the gold here has been tainted with idolatry. We can't have these things corrupting the people.

Right away, sir. As the Lord commands.

Achan returned with a torch in his hand. Later that night, the flames caused shadows to drift over the altar like a serpent. A greedy smile curved upward on Aiken's face. He looked around to see if anyone was watching.

What harm could it do?

Nobody has to know.

[Narrator]

His whispers bounced off the empty walls. He took the gold and stuffed it in his bag. He poured oil on the altar and lit it on fire. The temple was reduced to ashes, but its wickedness was carried out by Achan. Back to the Israelite camp.

[Joshua]

Victory over Jericho has won us another week. But there is still much to be done before we can enter the land the Lord promised us.

[Narrator]

Joshua paced back and forth on a large platform, speaking to his men as their commander.

[Joshua]

Our next objective is AI. Our spies have returned with an excellent report, gentlemen.

[Bible Reader]

Listen up, men. We've surveyed the kingdom of AI. It seems as though they depended too heavily on Jericho for protection. Now that the walls have crumbled and Jericho has fallen, it's vulnerable. We should only need 2,000 men to march. The rest can protect the camp and be on call for reinforcements.

[Joshua]

Prepare your swords and your hearts. We march at dawn.

[Narrator]

The men prepared themselves. Achan was among them, itching to see what other treasures awaited on the other side of the walls. They traveled to the borders of AI, where the vulnerable Canaanite army stood in defense. Their spears were raised, trembling with fearful hands. Joshua could see this would be an easy battle. Charge. The men's marching turned to sprinting. They shouted and stormed the gates. AI met them with unexpected strength. The battle raged, and the people of Israel began to waver. Canaanite swords tore apart the flesh of 36 Israelite men, and it became apparent to Joshua that they wouldn't win. Something unseen was happening in the margin.

Retreat.

[Narrator]

The army of Israel fled to the mountains. The men of AI cheered and mocked them as they left. Like dogs with tails tucked between their legs, dirty, bloody and bruised, the men sat on stones, astonished. Joshua retreated in anger. Flustered and confused, he bowed to the Lord.

How could this have happened?

[Joshua]

Why would you give us victory against the lions of Jericho and then let

[Host Ethan]

us fall at the hands of mice in AI?

[Joshua]

It doesn't make sense.

[Narrator]

Joshua tightened his jaw. His eyes were sealed shut. Holding Back tears.

[Joshua]

Why did you bring us over the Jordan at all? Would you bring us out here just to have us slaughtered? We've fled from our enemies. Word will spread of our cowardice, and they will be emboldened to come out and slaughter us.

[Narrator]

Joshua finally began to cry. His heart was broken over such a tragic loss. Although 36 men was not a large military blow, it meant everything to Israel. Each man was precious. Joshua felt his chest tighten. God was in his midst. A chill blew through the trees. Joshua began to shake. He looked up and heard God's voice speaking to him and through him.

[God]

Get up.

[Narrator]

Joshua sprung to his feet and looked around. The Lord's anger was white hot, in contrast to the frosted night.

[God]

Why do you fall on your face? The people have broken their promises to me. They have stolen idols. If I am not their God, why would I grant them victory?

[Narrator]

What do you mean?

[God]

They have taken objects devoted to destruction and idolatry. They have stolen what I set apart for destruction. They harbor idols in their tents and hearts. The people of Israel will not stand before their enemies. They've devoted themselves to destruction, so destruction is what they shall receive. I will be with you no more. My blessing will be removed from your swords and your shields until those idols are destroyed.

Lord, I had no idea.

[Joshua]

Please, have mercy. We can.

Enough groveling. Get up. Concentrate. The people. Tell them that the God of Israel shall search them out in the morning. They shall be brought before me as tribes. Lots will be cast to reveal the perpetrator. And he who has taken the devoted things shall be burned with fire. He and all that he has because he has transgressed the covenant of the law and because he has done an outrageous thing in Israel.

Joshua nodded like a good soldier.

Yes.

Yes, Lord.

He marched off, prepared to gather the people for a reckoning. Joshua rose early and brought out every tribe of Israel before him. He paced in front of them, staring.

Our defeat against AI was unexpected. We were able to conquer Jericho because we serve a God mightier than any fortress or army. When we serve the Lord, anything is possible. But hear me. You cannot serve two masters.

Joshua's gaze matched the intensity of God.

One of you has hoarded idols in your tent. We will cast lots to see who has sinned.

Achan's eyes widened and his throat clenched.

Achan gulped. All from the tribe of Judah were brought before Joshua. One by one, they brought their case before Joshua and left. Then Achan came forward. Achan's eyes revealed his sins. He didn't need to say anything. Joshua saw the guilt painted all over his face.

I've sinned against the Lord. I took some of the gold and silver. I thought I could. I mean, I didn't say the harmonious. It's only money.

No, you're wrong.

Aiken's tent was ransacked. They brought all the gold and silver Achan had taken and showcased it to all the people. They bound Achan in the middle of the valley. Each tribe member picked up stones, tears of rage and sorrow dripping from their chins. One by one, they hurled stones at him. Blood and screams scattered across the field. Achan writhed before them, bound and unable to free himself. Stone after stone struck Achan until he breathed his last. Joshua took Achan along with his idols and burned them. Everyone looked as Achan melted with his idols. He shared their fate, destined to become nothing. The anger of God disappeared with the ashes of Achan and his idols.

Joshua, do not be afraid to go against AI. I have given them into your hands.

Joshua felt the confidence of the Lord return. This time, Joshua gathered 30,000 of his finest men to take the city.

Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth where moths and vermin destroy and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness? No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.
