John leaned his head against the cold stone. A constant drip from the ceiling echoed through the damp corridors of Herod's dungeon. Each drip was a reminder of his loneliness.

[John the Baptist]

Was I wrong? Did I have it all backwards?

[Narrator/Storyteller]

John had soaked in that cell for over a year. He had made an enemy of King Herod.

[Narrator/Host]

He publicly decried his hypocrisy.

[Narrator/Storyteller]

But John's voice was far too loud for Herod not to hear.

[Narrator/Host]

He was seized and forced to rot

[Narrator/Storyteller]

away in prison until his inevitable execution. While John withered away in a dark

[Narrator/Host]

prison, Jesus was out in the open,

[Narrator/Storyteller]

eating with tax collectors and attending weddings.

[John the Baptist]

Where is the revolution? Where is the liberty of the captives and toppling of Rome?

[Narrator/Storyteller]

John wasn't immune to despair. Although he was a prophet and the

[Narrator/Host]

first to proclaim Jesus ministry, it didn't

[Narrator/Storyteller]

mean that he didn't experience fear, doubt and bitterness. He shivered in cold stone while Jesus preached liberty to the captives. But where was John's liberty? John pounded his fist against the wet stone and grimaced. He felt angry. He felt bitter. He felt entitled to something more than what he had gotten. John buried his head between his legs and held back frustrated tears.

Two of his followers walked through the

[Narrator/Storyteller]

dungeon halls, escorted by guards.

[John's Followers]

John how are you faring? We brought you some bread.

[Narrator/Storyteller]

John barely looked up, his head tilted toward the jagged walls of his cell. The two men exchanged worried glances and leaned on the bars.

[John's Followers]

Jesus is back in town. He caused a stir in Nazareth.

[Jesus]

Yeah. They tried to throw him off a cliff.

[John's Followers]

He claimed to be the Messiah, just as you professed.

[Narrator/Storyteller]

John rolled his head slowly to the other side and looked at his followers. His eyes were depressed and dark from sleepless nights.

[John the Baptist]

Yes, I heard he quoted Isaiah. He came to set the captives free.

[Narrator/Storyteller]

John raised a hand to his prison cell and scoffed.

[John the Baptist]

Doesn't look like liberty to me.

[John's Followers]

Perhaps now that he's here, he'll finally make his move against Rome.

[John the Baptist]

I'm not so sure anymore. I have more questions than answers about Jesus.

[John's Followers]

Are there any messages you'd like us to send to him?

[John the Baptist]

Yes. Ask him if he truly is the one to come. Or should we look for another?

John's friends looked at each other and then back to John.

[John's Followers]

John, are you sure? You said yourself that he was the Lamb of God.

[John the Baptist]

Ask him. I need to hear his answer. I need to be reminded of who he is.

The two men left the bread beside the cell and left. John leaned his head back against the stone and sighed.

Liberty to the captives

Jesus knelt beside a blind man. He placed his palms firmly on his

eyes and whispered a prayer. There was a pause, followed by a collective gasp as the man's sight was restored.

The crowd cheered and tears of relief streamed down the man's face. Jesus smile beamed with unbridled love and joy.

[Narrator/Storyteller]

This had been the rhythm of Jesus life in the past week in Galilee.

[Narrator/Host]

Hundreds of sick and broken people flocked to his side, desperate for healing and hope. Jesus was happy to offer them hope. His ministry resonated with the outcast, downtrodden and disinherited. Those who felt forgotten found belonging, but

the prominent and pious felt threatened.

[Narrator/Host]

Jesus pressed against their way of life

[Narrator/Storyteller]

and challenged their expectations of God's will. Wherever Jesus went, doubters trailed behind. Yet their groans couldn't be heard over

[Narrator/Host]

the collective cheers of the healed and hopeful.

[Narrator/Storyteller]

Jesus had everyone's attention.

[Narrator/Host]

As he often did, Jesus took the

[Narrator/Storyteller]

opportunity to teach about the kingdom of Heaven.

[Narrator/Commentator]

Physical blindness is a great burden because one is unable to see the smiles of their loved ones or a hole in the road. Yet spiritual blindness is far more treacherous. Those with a blindness of heart cannot see the will of God, and they miss the warning signs before them.

[Narrator/Host]

He turned to the Pharisees standing at a distance.

[Narrator/Storyteller]

His heart ached for them.

[Narrator/Host]

They had the law of Moses and the prophets etched into the tablets of their minds.

[Narrator/Storyteller]

Yet they were spiritual, spiritually blind, unable

[Narrator/Host]

to see the fulfillment of scripture.

[Narrator/Storyteller]

Right in front of them, two men worked their way through the crowd to reach Jesus. Their brows were turned inward, revealing their burdened hearts.

[John's Followers]

Rabbi, we're followers of John. We've just come from his prison cell.

[Narrator/Storyteller]

Jesus could see the worry on their faces.

[Narrator/Commentator]

How is my cousin faring?

[John's Followers]

John is no stranger to hardship. However, he does have questions for you. May we steal you away from the crowd for a moment and speak in private?

[Jesus]

Ask your question here.

I'm sure many people are anxious to hear how John is doing too.

[Narrator/Storyteller]

The two men looked at each other and shook their heads. Jesus knew what was happening in their hearts. He stepped forward and gave a reassuring nod.

[Narrator/Commentator]

It's all right. What is John's question?

[John's Followers]

John has asked if you truly are the one who is to come, or should we begin to look for another?

[Narrator/Host]

People stirred and murmured to each other. Many of them followed Jesus because of John's endorsement.

[Narrator/Storyteller]

Slight grins leaked from Pharisees mouths.

[John the Baptist]

Even John the baptizer doubts you, Jesus.

[Narrator/Storyteller]

Jesus ignored them and smiled at John's messengers. He gestured to the blind man whose sight had been restored and said, tell

[John's Followers]

John what you hear and see.

[Narrator/Commentator]

The blind have received their sight. The lame are walking, the lepers have been cleansed.

[Jesus]

Those who were once deaf can now hear songbirds.

[Narrator/Commentator]

And those who are poor have hope preached to them.

[Narrator/Host]

He finally turned to the Pharisees and

[Jesus]

continued, and blessed are those who are not offended by me.

[Narrator/Host]

He turned back to John's friends and

[Narrator/Commentator]

said, tell John these things. I trust my answer will satisfy him.

The two men bowed and left. Jesus turned to the crowd and raised his hands.

[Jesus]

What did you go into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind.

[Narrator/Storyteller]

The crowd shook their heads.

[Narrator/Commentator]

What then?

[Jesus]

Did you go to see A weak man dressed in soft clothing?

[Narrator/Commentator]

Of course not. Such men are lounging in Their palaces. Not preaching in the wilderness.

[Jesus]

What did you all go out to see? A prophet? Yes.

[Narrator/Commentator]

More than a prophet.

[Jesus]

John was the one Isaiah spoke of when he said, behold, I send my messenger before your face who will prepare

[Narrator/Commentator]

the way before you.

[Narrator/Host]

Jesus raised his voice and passionately spoke to the crowd. His voice was earnest and filled with emotion as he spoke about his beloved cousin John.

[Jesus]

Truly I say to you, among those born of women, there are none greater than John the Baptist. But I tell you, the one who is least in the kingdom of heaven

[Narrator/Commentator]

is even greater than John.

[Jesus]

The kingdom is making great strides now. Now is the time for courageous souls, forceful people to take hold of it. All the prophets and the law prophesied until John.

[Narrator/Commentator]

He was the last of them.

[Jesus]

And now, now the time has come. He is Elijah, the one who comes before the Son of Man.

[Narrator/Commentator]

He who has ears to hear, let him hear.

[John the Baptist]

John was a madman, just like you,

[Narrator/Storyteller]

one of the Pharisees grumbled.

[Narrator/Host]

Jesus turned to him with an annoyed glance.

[Narrator/Storyteller]

He held out his arms and groaned.

[Jesus]

Oh, you are like children whining to your playmates. Sitting in the marketplace, pretending to host weddings and funerals. You whine and complain, saying, we played the flute and you didn't dance. We sang a dirge and you didn't cry. You want people to play every game by your rules and you're unsatisfied with anything else. John didn't eat or drink at parties and you called him strange, even saying he had a demon.

Now the Son of Man comes and

[Jesus]

eats and drinks at parties among friends. And you call him a glutton and a drunkard.

You cannot be pleased. But I implore you to stop the games and see what's in front of you. Wisdom is justified by her deeds.

A fire was lit in Jesus belly. He spoke with a passion of a

[Narrator/Storyteller]

prophet, but with a tenderness of a loving father. He refused to play childish games with the religious leaders. The evidence was right in front of them.

The sight was restored to the blind. The lame walked. The hopeless had hope.

Although the Pharisees wouldn't accept it, Jesus knew that John would.

He knew that wisdom wasn't revealed with lofty words and holy chants.

True wisdom was shown through action and change left in its wake.

When the young Mary was pregnant with Jesus and excitedly awaited his birth, she visited her relative Elizabeth. It just so happened that Elizabeth was also with child. This child we now know as John the Baptist. In Luke 1, we're told that as Mary approached Elizabeth, John leapt in her womb and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. This moment was the first of many interactions between John and Jesus, and it demonstrated John's adoration for Jesus. As John grew, it was clear that he was destined to play a significant role in heralding the coming Messiah. John was given a unique ministry to prepare people to receive Jesus in the wilderness. John preached about the coming Kingdom of God, and he told people that the Messiah was coming. He baptized many people unto repentance, and he prepared their hearts to receive Jesus. But through it all, he made it abundantly clear that there was someone greater than him coming, one who would baptize them with the Holy Spirit. And when Jesus began his public ministry, he did so by being baptized by John. Later, as John is with his disciples, he saw Jesus approaching and he boldly proclaimed, behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. John had a unique relationship to Jesus, but like any of us, he had certain expectations of what Jesus would do in and through his life.
