📖 Teaching Segment: Minutia in Genesis

Led Zeppelin, “Stairway to Heaven,” and Genesis 28

Reference the song “Stairway to Heaven” sung by Robert Plant
Connect it creatively to Jacob’s ladder in Genesis 28:10–22

Jacob’s Story (Genesis 28)

Traveling to find a wife; stops in the middle of nowhere
Uses a stone for a pillow
Dreams of a ladder reaching from earth to heaven
Angels ascending and descending
The LORD at the top, reaffirming the Abrahamic promise

Jacob’s Response

“The Lord is in this place, and I didn’t know it.”
Calls it the gate of heaven
Declares the place awesome in the true sense
Turns the pillow-stone into a pillar
Anoints it
Names it Bethel (“House of God”)
Makes a conditional vow:
- If God is with me
- If God keeps me
- If God provides bread
- If God returns me in peace
  → Then the LORD will be my God

New Testament Bridge — John 1

Jesus says of Nathanael: “An Israelite in whom there is no Jacob (no deceit).”
John 1:51: “You will see heaven opened and angels ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”

Point:
In Genesis, the angels move on a ladder.
In John, the angels move on Jesus.
Jesus is the ladder—He is the connection between heaven and earth.

Babel vs Bethel

Babel: man tries to climb to heaven
Bethel: God opens heaven down to man

John 1:51 – Angels ascending/descending on the Son of Man
