John Clay Wolf
The John Clay Wolf show has appeared on terrestrial radio for a really, really, really long time. So we dug into our pockets, and on the other side of our. We found something funny. And yes, it's contagious. Gather round as the wolf pack goes on this throwback adventure.
DJ Prek
What's going on, world? It's your boy DJ Prek, back at it with another throwback clip for y' all from the John Clay Wolf Show. You know the business, and 420 was not too long ago, so I'm still in the spirit, if you know what I mean. And what better clip could I pull than when John talked to the OG Stoners themselves? Cheech and Chong. I mean, John totally fanboys out and even gets to do a rendition of Mexican Americans with the dynamic duo. I don't know how that works out since John is Caucasian or whatever, but. I don't know. It's not my question asked, but, yeah, let's get it. I was gonna say some more, but I'm high. Let's just listen to the clip.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
Hey, everybody, it's time for the neuter. Thanks for tuning in. Just as promised, we've got Cheech and Chong in the studio with us today promoting their new dvd. Hey, watch this. Thanks, guys, for jumping over right before you go to Blockbuster to.
Cheech Marin
Hey, hey, watch what?
John Clay Wolf (Host)
Hey, watch this.
Tommy Chong
Our pressure.
Cheech Marin
What do you want us to watch?
John Clay Wolf (Host)
No, I'm holding the DVD in my hand. I haven't seen it yet.
Cheech Marin
Oh, you want us to watch the dvd?
John Clay Wolf (Host)
Absolutely.
Tommy Chong
Is that porno?
Cheech Marin
What's it called?
John Clay Wolf (Host)
Hey, man, watch this.
Cheech Marin
I know, but what do you want us to watch?
John Clay Wolf (Host)
Who's on first? John?
Podbean Customer/Host
I saw it. I enjoyed it.
Tommy Chong
It's great.
Cheech Marin
It's good.
Podbean Customer/Host
It's got all your. You got a lot of your old bits in there.
Cheech Marin
Well, we got a few. We got a few of our old bits.
Tommy Chong
Old, new, borrowed, blue.
Cheech Marin
And the. The thing I like about it is the characters that never made the stand up, they. They get to come in. You know, the. Doug and Dougie, the game reviewers.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
Yeah, I'd say you're promoting your show for the Bass hall tonight, but it's sold out. I tried to get tickets last night.
Tommy Chong
Oh, good. Well, then what are you doing here?
Cheech Marin
No, we're promoting the signing at Blockbuster.
Tommy Chong
Signing a Blockbuster. We're going to be a Blockbuster signing.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
You're just promoting.
Podbean Customer/Host
Promoting, man, it's off Camp Bowie and Brian Irving.
Cheech Marin
And we want everybody to buy the dvd. Hey, watch this.
Tommy Chong
What?
Cheech Marin
And then we can afford.
Tommy Chong
What do you want us to watch?
Cheech Marin
Then we can afford to give it a right. Cheech and Chong title. Yeah, Right now. Hey, watch this.
Tommy Chong
It's just a generic right now. Yeah.
Cheech Marin
Mexican American.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
Do you like it? Hey, do you think.
Tommy Chong
Yeah, it's proud of it.
Cheech Marin
We want to have a little moment silence for the Dallas Mavericks, who really got. Who really ate it last night.
Tommy Chong
We're bringing in the shovels to scrape them off the floor later. And where they got run over by the Spurs.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
Did you hear about the controversy here in town? How that sports reporter guy texted, put on his tweet, I hope you. I hope all you blank Mexicans are happy down in San Antonio. He got blasted. It made national news, and they canned it. They shot him in the head.
Tommy Chong
We're overjoyed, actually.
Cheech Marin
Well, we're just in Arizona, you know, when they had that law. And, boy, we just got out of the time. They were after Cheech man over, he never had his papers.
Tommy Chong
They came up on stage.
Cheech Marin
Yeah.
Tommy Chong
All right, let's see your papers. I got the extra long ones with glue on both sides if you want to look at those.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
I told a buddy of mine, Tom Terrell, down at Honda Clear Lake, that y' all were coming in, and he said, oh, my God, I've still got the original bamboo album with the big paper with the rolling papers. He said, I smoked a ton of weed and I never used them, cuz I. It's. I'm keeping it for myself.
Cheech Marin
There you go.
Tommy Chong
Know shout out investment in your future.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
Absolutely. What year was that?
Tommy Chong
That was 73.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
What year did you guys start? Like, start, start.
Tommy Chong
First album was in 72.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
So you probably started in, like, 69.
Tommy Chong
Yes. Yeah, I think we met.
Cheech Marin
Yeah, we met in 69. It was a good number.
Tommy Chong
Up in Vancouver, Canada. We were doing.
Cheech Marin
He was doing 60.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
You might need to bring him up early. He's too light.
Cheech Marin
He was doing. He was doing 69 in Canada.
Tommy Chong
Yeah.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
Really?
Tommy Chong
I was an expert. They called him the Mexican expert.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
Well, I sat up last night, he
Cheech Marin
was giving mustache rides.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
One of my.
Tommy Chong
No waiting.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
One of my favorite songs. I mean, seriously, is that Mexican American song from whatever year? Oh, mid-70s. Here's a clip.
Tommy Chong
Yeah, yeah, right there. Okay, let's try. Mexican Americans don't like to just get into gang fights. They like flowers and music and white girls named Baby.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
Okay. So I sat up last night and said, I want to write a current version 30 years later of Mexican Americans. That.
Cheech Marin
Very good.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
That has a little more, you know, now that you guys are back in the game. Current stuff in it.
Cheech Marin
I like the first line. Mexican Americans don't like to start drug wars.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
Don't just like to start drug wars. And I was wondering if it was good enough for you to sing Cheech.
Tommy Chong
I'll sing one of them.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
I brought you an X too, but if you don't want to play it, I understand.
Cheech Marin
Oh, it's way out of tune.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
Is it?
Tommy Chong
Sort of, yeah.
Cheech Marin
But I'll take it home.
Tommy Chong
You want.
Cheech Marin
Did you give it to us?
Tommy Chong
Is it giving us.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
It's actually a friend of mine. I went over there at midnight last. I said, I gotta have a. I gotta have an acoustic. I'm having Cheech in the morning. I want him to sing my song.
Cheech Marin
Yeah.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
And so I. I play guitar in
Cheech Marin
that, you know, so I would be playing guitar.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
Let's give it to him here.
Tommy Chong
You too.
Podbean Customer/Host
You want to play it?
John Clay Wolf (Host)
Tommy, what can you get?
Cheech Marin
Oh, well, try not to bang it a whole.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
Oh, here.
Tommy Chong
Sorry. I just.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
I think it's good. I think I did good.
Podbean Customer/Host
Maybe you sing along with it, John.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
I'll try. I'll do whatever it takes.
Tommy Chong
Hey, John, let me hear this is. This is a American Idol for Mexican Americans.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
All right. I'll just sing the whole damn thing if you'll sing along.
Tommy Chong
He's good. John's gonna sing.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
All right. Hit it. Mexican Americans are named Jordan and Brandon and Alex and have brother in laws named Tyrone.
Tommy Chong
Mexican Americans are playing golf now and into NASCAR and other white guy stuff, but still fight chickens in Oklahoma. Yeah.
Cheech Marin
Mexican Americans like panty from Carlitas and they also like. And also they cook the best Chinese food. Mexican Americans sit in the radio stations and looking at stuff that other guys wrote and sitting there thinking, boy, this is really crap.
Tommy Chong
Mexican Americans like to go to the radio station and do this stuff and then take a nap. Hey, there you go.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
Yeah, there we go.
Tommy Chong
Do they got. Do they got care marijuana legal marijuana stores here?
John Clay Wolf (Host)
No, not yet.
DJ Prek
No, not yet.
Cheech Marin
This is Texas, man. Texas.
Tommy Chong
They don't got them. What?
Cheech Marin
They have them, but they're called jails.
Tommy Chong
Yeah, exactly.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
Where do you guys live?
Cheech Marin
You can go to jail.
Tommy Chong
La.
Cheech Marin
Go to jail for a joint, right?
Podbean Customer/Host
Oh, yeah, they have head shops. Yeah, but you know, they have. Yes, in Arlington.
Cheech Marin
That's where I got busted in Arlington.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
Did you?
Cheech Marin
Oh, really? No. That's where the DEA followed me around with cameras. They had knapsacks and headbands and they kept turning their knapsack around to get
Tommy Chong
catch me on camera.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
There's your coffee.
Cheech Marin
In Arlington.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
He said not to be ethnic, but didn't we send a Mexican after our coffee?
Tommy Chong
Where's my pizza? I want pizza.
Podbean Customer/Host
So do you guys think it's going to be legal here soon? In LA or to California at least?
Cheech Marin
I was just in a hash bar yesterday. I. Down in Cheech. On the way over here, I was in a hash bar, man, on Venice beach and sitting up there, you know, getting my medicine, you know, I showed my medical card, you know, and. Yeah, it was great. It was great. And it, you know, it's happening in
Tommy Chong
California, man, because California is happening.
Cheech Marin
Yeah.
Tommy Chong
So have any medical marijuana stores here?
John Clay Wolf (Host)
No, not that I'm wearing.
Tommy Chong
Would you guys been under a rock?
Cheech Marin
Come on. They're in Texas.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
Do you think they're going to get it passed? You think it'll be legal?
Tommy Chong
Absolutely. I think it'll be legal throughout the nation for any purpose within three years.
Cheech Marin
Three years? Yeah. Before Obama's out.
Tommy Chong
Yeah. Because if we can't get a pass with a brother in the White House. Come on, you know, I mean, please.
Cheech Marin
A surfer brother?
Tommy Chong
Yeah, From Hawaii. I wish. He smoked dope. A black guy, surfer from Hawaii during
Cheech Marin
that period that plays basketball.
Tommy Chong
Plays basketball? Yeah. And don't mind rap.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
How long have you guys been doing this tour?
Tommy Chong
Well, this particular tour, almost third year, four hours now.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
Just. Just kicked it off.
Cheech Marin
Third year.
Tommy Chong
Is it the third year? Yeah, it'll be the third year. Two years.
Cheech Marin
Three years. Yeah, three years.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
How many weekends a month? Y' all?
Tommy Chong
Just about every weekend. Yeah, we're gonna go until we need an operation until Cheech quits.
Cheech Marin
Getting married.
Tommy Chong
Yeah.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
You like Liz Taylor?
Tommy Chong
No, I don't like Liz Taylor. She's just. I like, too old for me.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
You know what? She just do number eight or nine or 12 or something. Nine. And the guy's like 40 years her junior.
Cheech Marin
Yeah. Really? Just recently.
Podbean Customer/Host
Yeah, yeah.
Cheech Marin
Just got her gold.
Tommy Chong
I, like, got a caregiver.
Cheech Marin
She can get the best prescriptions.
Tommy Chong
Yeah, she's got the biggest head you ever saw on a person.
Cheech Marin
I bet.
Tommy Chong
I mean, she's like this little tiny body. My little pin legs and this enormous head, man. It's like. Like a bobblehead.
Cheech Marin
Well, apparently she gives good.
Tommy Chong
Yeah.
Cheech Marin
I don't know.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
Haircuts.
Cheech Marin
Yes.
Caller
Yeah.
Cheech Marin
Good haircut. That's why I like her.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
When you guys. How long did y' all just do comedy at clubs and stuff before you got the movies? A couple years.
Cheech Marin
No, no, 10 years.
Tommy Chong
10 years? Yeah.
Cheech Marin
When you guys are like, almost 10 years. We.
Tommy Chong
We actually did almost 10 years. Three years, eight years.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
Did that change? That just change everything? Years first, first movie. Did it just change everything? Throw it in?
Tommy Chong
No, it renewed everything, you know, because we were. We were a big record act. We sold a lot of records. We had three number one albums in a row. We toured constantly. Played every place you could. A play that spoke English in the world. And. And then it was starting to, you know, kind of. Wayne. And then all of a sudden, the movies hit and it revived everything and kicked it up to another degree. And then when it really kicked off was when the movies got on cable. That's. That was when.
Cheech Marin
When cable came in.
Tommy Chong
Well, when cable was invented. I don't like to say that, you know. How old are you? I told my kid, I have a son when he's 24 now, but when he was like 7 or 8, and they go in his room and there's all these gadgets and all these computers and everything and all these, you know, computer games. And I said, you know, when I was a kid, we didn't have tv. And he goes, yeah, I know, you were too poor. No, it wasn't invented yet. He looked at me like, how old are you? What was. What happened when you first saw fire?
Cheech Marin
You know, that's true. I was 12 years old when we got our first television.
Tommy Chong
Yeah. I remember when there wasn't TV and then there was tv. Yeah.
Podbean Customer/Host
Now there's radio.
Cheech Marin
It was radio. That's all we had.
Tommy Chong
You looked at the radio.
Cheech Marin
Not only radio, but it was AM radio.
Tommy Chong
That's the only thing they have an fm. Yeah. FM was for, like, civil disturbances.
Cheech Marin
Yeah. Yeah. And one one station in, like, in. In Calgary, where I grew up in Canada. One one station. And so they dictated everything.
Podbean Customer/Host
Yeah.
Cheech Marin
But it was cool, you know, we made it.
Tommy Chong
Yeah, we made it. We made it.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
Did the movies make more money in the albums?
Tommy Chong
Oh, yeah.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
Oh, yeah.
Tommy Chong
I mean, the albums made a lot of money. And the concerts.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
I missed the. The album, the comedic album. I mean, it's really. It doesn't exist anymore. I mean, I grew up. Listen. I mean, literally under my bed. I wasn't supposed to be listening to it. My brother's eight years older than me, and he had, you know, Richard Pryor, you guys, Robin Williams, George Carlin. And I was sitting there on the eight track player under my bed when I was about four listening to this stuff. But those albums, they don't hit like they did. No.
Tommy Chong
Ye. Yeah, it was of. Is of the age. That was a golden age of radio or album comedy actually. If people were making albums right now, it'd be easier because everything's easier to access.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
Sure.
Tommy Chong
Dial them up on ipod. You know, you don't got to see if your record store has it.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
If you guys. Was there any conversation of making an album like you used to.
Tommy Chong
Too much work.
Cheech Marin
Yeah, yeah. Actually, you know, they. They want to. We got new material on the new show. You know, know. Right. People, you know, we're hinting around that we should record, but we don't need a. You don't need a record company.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
No, you don't need to do it right here, right now.
Cheech Marin
You can do it.
Tommy Chong
We got an animated album coming out. They were animating our earlier record bits
John Clay Wolf (Host)
animated movie with this whole legalization thing. You guys may be up for a whole career kickoff again.
Tommy Chong
Unbelievable. Again, Things are. You know, how.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
How many lives does this cat have, dude?
Tommy Chong
Like five. How many wives? Well, only three.
Cheech Marin
No, we want to.
Tommy Chong
One time.
Cheech Marin
We. We want to really push our animated career. Career. Yeah. Because, you know, we never grow old when you're animated.
Tommy Chong
Yeah, I like it.
Cheech Marin
And you don't work that hard. And if you get tired of doing voices, you hire someone else.
Tommy Chong
We're going to be on the Simpsons. Yeah, they wrote a whole episode about Chichen Chong.
Cheech Marin
Very funny.
Tommy Chong
And very funny. We're going to do it soon.
Cheech Marin
Very funny.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
Hey, I gotta. I'm gonna switch gears on us real quick. I want to do this. Yeah, really?
Cheech Marin
Remember, the jeans are too tight.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
No, I got this car show on Saturdays and it's syndicated all over the place.
Tommy Chong
They get a job where we don't have to work. Okay.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
Good morning. Next caller, you're on the air.
Caller
Is it the Big Bad Wolf?
John Clay Wolf (Host)
This is the Big Bad Wolf. What you got, Holmes?
Caller
Well, I got a car I need to get a number on.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
Okay, what you got?
Caller
I got a 92 Astro van, 13 inch wires, perfect condition, white in color. Got a nice mural on the back. Real nice.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
13 of what?
Caller
A little small of what?
John Clay Wolf (Host)
What's the mural of?
Cheech Marin
You got any room in the back for illegals?
Caller
Oh, yeah, I'm a Coyote too.
Tommy Chong
How many can you get in if you stack them like cordwood?
Caller
Oh, at least 12. 13.
Tommy Chong
All right. Well, that's good. Yeah.
Caller
Easy.
Cheech Marin
Well, that'll bring the price up.
Caller
It's getting Bad.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
So you got, you got Daytons or what? Spinners.
Caller
13 inch Dayton.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
You got the knockoffs.
Caller
Yep, knockoffs. The white wall got the little chrome chain steering wheel.
Cheech Marin
You got lights under the.
Tommy Chong
The car wheel wells.
Caller
Oh, no, no, no.
Tommy Chong
All right, thank you. Next caller.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
This got any lift on it? Any hop?
Caller
Oh, yeah, two CCE hydraulic pumps.
Cheech Marin
I like that. How much?
Caller
Real nice.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
See, we got to put a number on original. Why are you getting rid of this thing? Dude?
Cheech Marin
How much is selling?
Caller
What is it?
John Clay Wolf (Host)
What do you want for it?
Cheech Marin
How much money?
Caller
Oh, man. 7,500 would be the dream.
Tommy Chong
Dream, Dreaming.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
What are you going to trade it in on?
Caller
I'm looking for maybe Escalade.
Tommy Chong
Yeah.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
Oh, yeah. You gonna pimp it or you gonna
Cheech Marin
get more relatives in there?
Caller
Yeah.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
How much?
Caller
Dirty duty. Got wood in balls.
Tommy Chong
How much.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
How much do you spend on this thing?
Caller
Oh, not too much. A little dealing, willing trading, not too much.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
It's homegrown, I think. I mean, this car, this thing could be worth 7, 500 bucks if it's nice. I mean, it sounds like you probably got 10 grand in it.
Cheech Marin
Yeah, but maybe, maybe 10 if you sell it to a white guy.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
What's the mural of? Is he interested?
Tommy Chong
What's the mural of?
John Clay Wolf (Host)
What's the mural of? Is it the Mary?
Caller
Oh, Aztec warrior.
Tommy Chong
I've never seen one of those.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
You.
Cheech Marin
You. I guess you're blind. Are you?
Tommy Chong
Oh, yeah. Well, I don't live in a Chicago neighborhood.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
I'm cool at 7, 500. We'll give it at the Philly.
Tommy Chong
7,500.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
7, 500. We're down on an Escalade if you want to trade in an Escalade. Thanks for calling, man.
Tommy Chong
All right, man.
Caller
All right. Thank you.
Tommy Chong
Thanks for giving it to us. It's weird.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
Yeah. So that, that Saturday show, it goes a little better than that, but they call in and I bid their cars over the air because I was a car dealer for a long time. Yeah. And they take the my bids to the dealerships, and they're like, wolf, put 7, 500 in it. And the dealer honors my bid. And if they don't want it, then they call me and say, hey, dude, you put 7, 500 in this. In this lowrider, come get it. So I've got to buy them from the dealers if the dealers didn't want them. But it saves the listeners a lot of time from having to go to the car dealerships and wrestle with them. I can give them a number on the trade in out of the gate.
Tommy Chong
But what if they're full of crap
John Clay Wolf (Host)
on the radio, I got a recording of it all and we play it back. They lie. Don't lie, man. Don't lie. Don't lie. We're gonna be in California about three more weeks. Gonna start in Stockton, Modesto, Sac, San Francisco.
Tommy Chong
This is a good gig.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
Yeah, yeah, yeah. And that's what I built the studio for. This noon thing is just something we started doing because we're here and we got the studio and we just want to have fun.
Tommy Chong
Oh, and this is actually a car lot.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
No. So we do this noon show every day in Dallas just for the hell of it. Just to have guys like you on.
Cheech Marin
I love it, man.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
And then the Saturday deal is like work.
Tommy Chong
Oh, I see. It's a specialty bill.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
It pays the bills. This doesn't pay the bills. This is just for fun.
Podbean Customer/Host
What are you guys driving?
John Clay Wolf (Host)
And as you can imagine, everybody likes this show better.
Tommy Chong
Lincoln Town Car.
Cheech Marin
I got a Prius.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
Really? Really? You went green?
Cheech Marin
Yeah.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
You went skunk? Like red hair green or just green?
Cheech Marin
I got a two Priuses and Silverado hybrid.
Tommy Chong
But they're all juiced.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
They're all juice?
Tommy Chong
Yeah, a little bit.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
Jews don't do egg Toyotas. Japanese do.
Tommy Chong
No juice.
Podbean Customer/Host
Juice.
Cheech Marin
Yeah, they do. They, they, I, I got friends that are Jewish that have Priuses. But they say, well, this is my kids car. Yeah, they won't, they won't pass up to it.
Tommy Chong
I drive a Volvo, I'm a Volvo guy.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
How many miles on your Volvo?
Tommy Chong
I don't know.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
This is what blows me. Well, I had Alan Parsons on the other day. He had an 8 year old 70,000 mile car. I'm like, what's a rich dude like you doing in a mild out used car? Tom Green, he drives a Challenger, he was in the other day. And I just figured, I mean, if I was a big celeb, I'd have something. I'd be getting a new car.
Tommy Chong
I don't care about cars. I mean, I really don't.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
It's not your gig, man.
Tommy Chong
I get it. I get a brand new car and then I drive it till it falls apart eight years later. Then I just drive the hell out of it and then I get another one. I don't care. It has to be just like a big cruiser and the air conditioning and the radio has to work. That's my requirements. That's it.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
Do you like lowriders?
Tommy Chong
Oh, yeah. You know, if the radio works and air conditioning works. Yeah, sure.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
Do you have any?
Tommy Chong
I had some, I had a 55 Chevy rag top, man. It was the cherry. It was really nice. But I never had cars as a kid. When I was in high school, I didn't get my first car till I was in college.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
How old were you? No question. When was the peak of the. Of the fame and the money? Like, 83.
Tommy Chong
Well, that was. That was one peak.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
Here comes the next.
Tommy Chong
Yeah, I mean, we're doing well as well now as we did it at ever.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
Really?
Tommy Chong
Yeah. Ever. Yeah.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
Financially. Financially, you're doing as well right now?
Tommy Chong
Probably better right now, in concert wise? Yeah, absolutely. We never had the merchandising together before.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
Right.
Tommy Chong
And now we got all these ancillary things. You know, we got the DVD call. Hey, watch this.
Cheech Marin
And the concert.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
Watch what?
Cheech Marin
The concert price. We looked at some old tickets. They're like $2 and 50 cents. $5 with top price.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
I found tickets. Turley called me last night, said, dude, if you really want to go, I found you some tickets for 500 bucks a seat. He said, they're right there at the orchestra pit. I'm like, I mean, I'll. I'm gonna have Cheech and Chong in the show. I'd rather save my grand and just have them in person.
Tommy Chong
Wow.
Cheech Marin
Buy another car.
Tommy Chong
Yeah.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
A grand a spot is what the Scalpers are hitting you guys for tonight in LA.
Tommy Chong
They were selling. They were going for 1200 a piece, you know, so as. As well. I mean, we just sold out Radio City Music Hall, New York. Never done that before. You know, we're doing great. I like the. I like today in today's money.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
So Cheech and Chong fans, new DVD will not be let down. It's not up.
Tommy Chong
It's really good. It's really.
Cheech Marin
It's very.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
Stand completely behind it.
Tommy Chong
Absolutely. And there's stuff that happens off stage, other characters interacting that nobody's ever seen before, because we just did it for the first time. Right.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
That's a.
Tommy Chong
It's a very. It's really well shot. It's. You get a lot of production value,
Cheech Marin
and it's the first CD with hydraulics.
Tommy Chong
Yeah.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
Got a question. When y' all were young men and you were starting in this and making fun of all the stuff you make fun of, did your family. Did your dad ever grab you and say, son, you're embarrassing the family?
Tommy Chong
My dad. My dad's a policeman. He's LAPD for 30 years. He grabbed me and said, Son, I need 100 albums. I got all these guys and sign them here and get the Chino to sign them, too. But.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
But they never. Because when you start crossing over.
Tommy Chong
No, man. Cops were our biggest fans. Yeah, yeah, they were. They were they. Because they were.
Cheech Marin
They.
Tommy Chong
They dug the humor.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
You right.
Tommy Chong
And they were. They were our biggest fans.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
I just noticed that a little bit when I start getting out there with funny stuff, people close to me. I mean, the funniest stuff is your own life.
Tommy Chong
Yeah.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
And when you start touching it, the people that are involved in it get all bent
Cheech Marin
because you're making money and they're not.
Tommy Chong
Let them get their own show.
Cheech Marin
They don't mind being ragged on if you're. They were getting a few bucks out of it.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
So that's the way to shut them up.
Cheech Marin
You rag on them.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
Just write him a check.
Tommy Chong
No, no, get the. Tell them how to do. Get their own show.
Cheech Marin
It's like Louis CK the comedian. He'd rag on his wife. She divorced his ass.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
Who is Yalls favorite comedians? Tommy, who's yours? Top three.
Cheech Marin
Top three.
Tommy Chong
I like Sarah Palin.
Cheech Marin
You know, I. I like Steve Martin. I like Richard Pryor and Eddie Murphy, I guess.
Tommy Chong
Yeah, I like Richard Pryor. I like. I like Red Fox. Red Fox is hilarious. And who else? I don't know. There's a lot of.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
A lot of Chris Rock. I listen to him.
Tommy Chong
I too. He's very funny. Very funny.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
It is. Do.
Cheech Marin
Are y'. All.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
What's the new guy's name? That's. He's a big popular with the Mexican. Mexican crowd.
Podbean Customer/Host
Carlos Mencia or.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
No, that's TV show.
Podbean Customer/Host
Oh, George Lopez.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
Yeah.
Tommy Chong
Yeah. George Lopez is funny man.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
Because everybody's always dissing on him for stealing the stuff.
Podbean Customer/Host
Not George, it's Carlos.
Tommy Chong
They steal from each other. It's like the family. Well, whose shirt was that? Well, it was mine first, but then I gave it to you. And then. And now my other cousins got it.
Cheech Marin
The Latin kings of comedy. You would go out and they would fight to see who got went on first because he would do the act.
Tommy Chong
Guys, was.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
Did you see that movie Funny People with Adam Sandler?
Tommy Chong
Yeah, I did.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
Yeah.
Cheech Marin
I missed it.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
Probably a pretty good depiction of the life.
Tommy Chong
Yeah, some ways it was the first half.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
I liked the second half when they got into the love story and all that. I just. I could do without. Sandler's a good guy.
Tommy Chong
Yeah, it was good. I liked. I like that movie.
Cheech Marin
Dave Chappelle.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
Bingo. Yeah, he's the man.
Cheech Marin
Love the Dave Chappelle.
Tommy Chong
I mean, for a black guy.
Cheech Marin
I did. I did a movie with him before he. He was really, you know, into his groove and he was different. And then I. Then I seen him just lately, and he's. Give me a big hug and. Because he. You know, he matured by then, guys.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
Awesome.
Cheech Marin
Yeah, very funny.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
I'm ready for him to make a comeback.
Cheech Marin
But, you know, he. He was. What happened to him? They ate him up. You know, they. They. They took what he had, and they wanted more and more and more and more. And that's what happens. Hollywood will eat you up.
Tommy Chong
It's a garbage disposal, man. You know, you work on this material forever and ever and ever. You go out and then it's gone. And they want. Well, give me some more. Okay?
John Clay Wolf (Host)
That ain't easy being cheesy.
Tommy Chong
That's why we took 30 years.
Cheech Marin
It ain't easy being cheesy.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
We gotta go, guys. You gotta get to your book signing, your DVD signing.
Tommy Chong
Dvd. Sign a blockbuster right here on Campbell.
John Clay Wolf (Host)
