The John Clay Wolf show has appeared on terrestrial radio for a really, really, really long time. So we dug into our pockets and on the other side of our we found something funny. And yes, it's contagious. Gather round as the wolf pack goes on this throwback adventure.
Sandra
What's up, y'?
Doug
All?
Sandra
It's your boy, DJ Pre K with the John Clay Wolf show posted up in the archives. And when something goes bump in the night, you got to come out blasting. John's putting his wife through training in case of home invasion, but he wants to make sure he's got the best details for a heart stopper. We asked the fans and damn, I didn't know our listeners were slaying lead like that.
DJ Pre K
Check it out if you were in. My wife and I were talking about this yesterday. Home protection. Okay. Pestle. Our sawed off shotgun, middle of the night. Yeah, shotgun. Every time. Every time. Do you have a light on it?
John Clay Wolf
I do not.
DJ Pre K
You don't really need it.
John Clay Wolf
Why do you need it?
DJ Pre K
But they do have them with those lights on the end of it.
John Clay Wolf
Yeah, well, you need a flashlight.
DJ Pre K
I was out of town last week, she wasn't there. She's like, you know, I've got these guns, but which one would be the. You know, we need to go through this drill. You really need to go through this. And I said, a sawed off shotgun is the way to go in town. She's like, oh, I don't want to kill anybody. I just want to stop them. I was like, you know, if you're coming down the hallway and you've decided to whip a gun, you're not thinking about killing them. You're just. You got to do what you got to do. But I think a sawed off shotgun is the way always. Always.
John Clay Wolf
Because you don't have to aim right. General vicinity does it.
DJ Pre K
What number slugs?
John Clay Wolf
12S or 20s, either way.
DJ Pre K
No, no, no, no number slugs. Not the. Not the gay.
John Clay Wolf
Oh, how many you got to put down the hole?
DJ Pre K
No, no, no, no number ones, twos, threes. Like, what shot do you use?
John Clay Wolf
Oh, I don't even. I don't know.
DJ Pre K
Birds are six right yeah, pheasants are four or buckshot is one. Yeah, I'd use a one. Okay.
Gigi
That doesn't even sound like a real bullet buckshot. That doesn't sound like any.
DJ Pre K
Well, the reason it is is because with a shotgun, if you wanted to shoot a big buck deer, then you need to throw out a slug. That's a number one. That's like an actual lead slug. And if you're shooting, you know, birds buck. Bird hunting. You shoot a pattern of bbs and that's like a six or seven.
Gigi
And if someone breaks into your house and you're trying to shoot a big buck man.
DJ Pre K
Right. Then you use the number one.
Gigi
Okay.
DJ Pre K
Use a buckshot. Gigi, do you have a sawed off shotgun at your house?
Gigi
No, my ex husband had a Mossberg shotgun.
DJ Pre K
That's it.
Gigi
And he showed me how to load the bullet with one hand or whatever you call it. He was kind of a gun fanatic, so.
John Clay Wolf
Yeah, that's that movie move where you grab one hand and you do all.
Gigi
The up and down and you do that. He has like a small hand cannon. Yeah, that's what I called it. I think it was a.45. It had like those. The thing that pops out the side and then you put the bullets in. Yes, then you put it back and it's got a long barrel and it's big.
DJ Pre K
If you've ever shot an intruder or shot at an intruder. God, I'd love to Hear your story. 8008-0072-3480-0800-7234. 800, 800 radio. Now, I don't need to hear about your grandmother and your mother and your this in the whole day. I just. Just take the story and tighten it down for radio. Edit yourself is what I'm saying. A lot of people will stop just from the sound of hearing you rack a shotgun.
John Clay Wolf
Exactly.
DJ Pre K
That's enough to stop most people. Unless they're crazy. You call in 8008-0072-3480-0800 radio. If you have ever shot an intruder or shot at an intruder. What we were talking about a minute ago is guns for the house. Like shotgun versus pistola.
John Clay Wolf
Your wife asked you.
DJ Pre K
Yeah, and I asked listeners to call in if they have any story of like a break in where they had to shoot somebody or shoot out of somebody. Sandra in Pittsburgh, good morning.
Doug
Okay.
Gigi
Hello.
Doug
What happened was in 2006, I have a small jewelry store in Pittsburgh. Well, a guy came over my showcase. I backed up and I just kicked him. My husband, he had a guy on his side. He grabbed, went on the floor, grabbed the.357 and fired five shots at him.
DJ Pre K
Did he hit him?
Doug
They ran out the door.
DJ Pre K
What, did he hit him?
Doug
No, we had no blood, but the cops took us.357, so we had to go buy more guns. Now, two years ago, I had two gentlemen come in and the guy sucker punched me. I. He thought I'd go down because I'm so many years old. What I did, I went to my desk, grabbed the.357. I didn't hit him. I fired the shot. They flew out the door, but I shut my plate glass window again.
DJ Pre K
So you're in the.
Doug
You gotta have guns.
DJ Pre K
You're in the jewelry business?
Doug
I have a little jewelry store, yes.
DJ Pre K
Do you think you would have been better off with a 12 gauge sawed off shotgun? Do you think you would have hit him?
Doug
We had a shotgun. We had a shot off shotgun, but my husband didn't have time to grab it. He grabbed a.357. Yeah, we had a shotgun backer.
DJ Pre K
Where in Pittsburgh are you and what's the name of your business? We can give you a plug shooters.
Doug
Oh, okay, shoot. No, it's called Forever Gold. I'm in business 40 years now.
DJ Pre K
What part of town?
Doug
But without the guns, Forget it. They would have handcuffed us. They found handcuffs.
DJ Pre K
What part of town are you in?
Doug
I'm in Forced Hills.
DJ Pre K
All right, there's Sandra.
Doug
But you got to have guns. You got to have guns to protect yourself. And nobody bothers me now because they know they're going to get shot.
DJ Pre K
Doug, good morning. You're on the air in Cincinnati.

Launch your podcast on Podbean today. Hey, you guys were talking about what type of shot and all that. Before the police started carrying rifles in their cars, all they had for a long gun was shotguns. And a lot of law enforcement agencies would do buckshot the first one or two rounds and then they would alternate like a slog, thinking the fact that you're going to be nervous when you fire your first or second round if you're being shot at, but then you Put a slug in the chamber somewhere. If you pull your plug out, you've got more than you know, three straight in there.
DJ Pre K
Straighten me out. Hang on. Buckshot is that number is slugs number one and buckshots number two, it depends on.
John Clay Wolf
You could get different size buckshot. So it could be like it's in the lower numbers, 2, 3. So depending on how many.
DJ Pre K
So 1 through 3 is sluggy kind of shots. I've just never broke them apart and looked at the metal in them.
John Clay Wolf
Like, buckshot number two sometimes will only have two, two shot in it. You know, the lower. The higher you go, the more pellets you get.
DJ Pre K
Kathy in Florida, Good morning, You're on the air.
Doug
Hi. How are you?
DJ Pre K
Good.
Doug
Well, I'm half Colombian, so I was in Cali, Columbia, one time, and I was with my old Aunt Beatrice. And this guy starts coming over the courtyard and we have broken glass cemented there. But he meant business because he had like some kind of carpet or something trying to put over there. My Aunt Beatrice, I swear she was about 70. She hands me a rifle and we get out there, she goes shoot. And we shot at this guy, and I was just a kid, and then he went away. And I say, we need guns because there was, you know, we had maids there, but we didn't have. My cousins weren't home at the time. The guys, I was back riding. So we're glad we had those guns.
DJ Pre K
Thank you. From Florida, Dre, in Cypress, Houston.
John Clay Wolf
How you doing, Mr. Wolf?
DJ Pre K
Good, good.
John Clay Wolf
Awesome. I was just calling. I used to be a club owner. Many, many years ago. Wife and kids was out of town visiting the in laws, so I came home late from the club, fell asleep. Evidently some guys followed me from my club.
DJ Pre K
Knowing you had cash on you.
John Clay Wolf
Exactly. But the cash was already gone. I had a guy that I killed the cash off to and he'll take it and we'll make the drops the next day. So it never was on me, right? But anyway, somehow they got right, somehow they got in to my home. I was knocked out. I had a baby mom monitor upstairs. So I woke up to hearing grown men talking upstairs. I grabbed. I grabbed my gun and started.
DJ Pre K
What kind of gun?
John Clay Wolf
In my roof? It was a pistol grip pump.
DJ Pre K
Okay, so you had a shotgun, A short, a sawed off pistol grip shotgun. What kind of slugs? What numbers?
John Clay Wolf
I don't know what number.
DJ Pre K
I just wonder what you suggest on a home weapon.
John Clay Wolf
Well, I actually, I suggest a pistol grip part because it spreads out, right? Because you're gonna hit everything Yeah, I just didn't hit them, but I did damage to my roof and cops came.
DJ Pre K
Oh, did you try to shoot through the second floor?
John Clay Wolf
Yeah, I was shooting through the. I was on the first floor. They was on the second floor because I heard him talking through the baby monitor. And it scared the hell out of me, to be honest with you. And I started just shooting, you know, not thinking I was gonna have to get all this work done. But the cops came and they draw it down on me because of course, they know it was my house. And then when they realized what was going on, they went upstairs, got the guys. It was three of them. And I recognized all of them.
DJ Pre K
Oh, really?
John Clay Wolf
They came from. From the club? Yeah.
DJ Pre K
Wow. Thank you for the story. New Orleans. Good morning.
John Clay Wolf
Hey, man, how you doing?
DJ Pre K
Good, good. You had a bakery in New Orleans? You had. They're robbing you.
John Clay Wolf
Yeah, yeah. Well, I was, yeah. Because I worked during the night and I delivered the bread in the morning. You know, I went home, took a shower, come back, I was sitting in my car and I saw, like, three of them. They were coming from three different sides. And I got out the car, said, don't come by me because you're gonna get shot. So I usually carry about five, ten grand on me, right. And. And I grabbed the wrong gun. I grabbed. I had an Elliot net 45 look at it and shoot my thing off when I put it in my pants. And because the hair trigger is not. It was from the 1910s, I think my grandpa gave it to me. And, well, when they started coming to me too, I saw him reaching for that gun. I started aiming. I shot three times. I hit, but it hit him below the waist. I was aiming at their chest. And then the Katrina hit. And then about two years later, we went to court and they tried to say I was robbing them.
DJ Pre K
Oh, yeah, of course.
John Clay Wolf
Yeah.
DJ Pre K
What they do to you?
John Clay Wolf
I just laugh. He goes, look at this guy. He has no felonies. And you're gonna tell me, look at y'. All. Y' all got all the way to the roof, and y' all been robbing people all of your lives, you know, But a double odd buck is what you want.
DJ Pre K
All right, Rick and Austin.
John Clay Wolf
Hey, guys. How's it going? I love you guys. Love the show.
DJ Pre K
Thanks.
John Clay Wolf
I caught a guy. I caught a guy breaking into my girlfriend's house here one dark and stormy night here and Central Texas in spring, and I popped him in the face with the butt of my 177 competition. 1200 FPS pellet rifle and then proceeded to tell him not to move. And he wanted to move and try to get away, so I blasted him right in his testicle with it. And yeah, they got the term half sack from that.
DJ Pre K
There you go. Jude in Nashville. Jude in Nashville. Good morning. Hi. We were talking about guns and like for. Especially for a woman. What is a good gun? What to use in the home for home intruders.
Gigi
Okay. I wasn't in my home, but the only gun I ever owned was a little. I call it a peace shooter. It was a little.38 special. I carried it in my purse.
DJ Pre K
Those are good little. Yeah, I mean, they're little snub nose. That's why I've got one too. But what were you saying? Your ex husband, you had to shoot him?
Gigi
My husband shot at him. I didn't hit him. No, he. I'd already been. He was real violent, real abusive, real bad on drugs and he was trying to kill me. He's the, you'll never leave me. I'll kill you first. And I've been in about five or six gun battles with him already, with him shooting at me already. This one, turn low. It's broad daylight. Yeah, yeah, I'll kill you first. So we're going up to Anna, Texas, and I'm falling. I'm not really following him, but he's in the record. I'm behind him in the shop vehicle, an old pos. It was like a Monte Carlo or something like that. So he pulls across at the stop sign and blocks the stop sign so I can't get through. Okay. I'm like, oh my God, what is he up to now? What's what now? And so he reaches behind the seat of his wrecker, pulls out a shotgun in two pieces. I think it's a 12 gates sawed off shotgun from what I heard. And. And he's loading it up and he's fixing to shoot at me. And I'm like, oh, no, what do I do now? I'm stuck. I can't get out of this. So I duck and I pull the wheel over as far as I can to make a U turn. And I pull it over and hit the gas end of the middle of a plow field. He fires at me. Breaks out a couple of the windows in the car. It's got, you know, buckshot mark all over the back of the landau and everything like that. The landau top, you know, it's been hit. There's windows missing and everything. So then I, you know, the car stops and I kind of Peek up over, you know, the broken out window on the passenger and the driver's side and he's walking towards me and he's reloading the gun. I thought, man, I am a sitting duck. He is going to get me this time, you know. And so I reach over, unzip my purse, go digging in it. I find my.38 special. I don't want to pop my head up again because he's already loading the gun. I figured if I pop my head up, he's going to fire again. So I just leveled off with a broken out glass in the window. Okay. And I just fire a shot and then I wait about 10 seconds or so and I kind of real quickly pop up again to see if he's still coming at me, you know, if I need to take more action. And he's decided that since I have my gun on me and I could shoot him, right, you know, coming to shoot me, backed up and he'll just shoot me another day. So he's, he went back to the record. I watched him get. I've got it.
DJ Pre K
I've got to go. I gotta go, I gotta go, I gotta go. That's a good story though. I'm up against a break. That's cool story.
