Hello, everyone, and welcome back to the Kate Show. Today is a deviation from what we normally do on the show because I am interviewing my husband and my kids. So it's a special holiday episode. I hope you enjoy it. Hey, everyone, I am here with my son. This is his podcast debut. He's never been on any podcast before, much less his mama's podcast. So, young man, what is your name? Salin. Yes. And how old are you? How old are you?
B
How tall are you?
A
No. How old are you? Yes. Are you one?
B
No.
A
How old are you? You're holding up two fingers. You're two. Yes, you are two. And what toys do you like to play with?
B
Tractors.
A
Yeah.
B
Which rattles.
A
Yeah, big tractors. And what. What is on your shirt today? Oh, yeah, yeah, look at your shirt. What's that? What is on your shirt? To everyone who can't watch this video right now, if you're driving or something. He is really, really enthralled with the idea of seeing himself on camera. Okay, so Salen, what do you want for Christmas? What do you want? Ball. A ball. Oh, okay. Do you think you also want maybe more trucks? You want more trucks? Yep. A man can never have too many trucks.
B
Oh, not much trucks.
A
Oh, you need two more trucks. Just two. Oh, okay.
B
And a truck.
A
Uh huh. But have you been a good boy this year? Will Santa Claus bring you presents? You're not sure?
B
You.
A
Yeah. Yes, that's me on the camera. Uh huh.
B
You my mama?
A
Yes. Now, what do you want to be when you grow up? Do you want to be a firefighter?
B
Firefighter.
A
Or a farmer? Or a.
B
Farmer.
A
Do you want to be an online entrepreneur? No. Oh, okay. I guess he's going to be a farmer. Let's see. Yeah. Talk in the microphone. Say hello. Hi, everyone.
B
Hi, Iowa.
A
This podcasting is so fun, huh? So what do you think mama does for work? What do I do for work?
B
Online.
A
Yeah, I'm online. Yeah. You're not sure, are you? Oh, the joy of being two. Okay, well, can you tell everyone listening? Can you tell everyone listening? Merry Christmas.
B
Merry Christmas.
A
Oh, and why do we celebrate Christmas?
B
Thank you.
C
Why?
B
Is it.
A
Is it because of Jesus?
B
Is it Jesus birthday? Yeah.
A
Yeah. That's so great. All right, well, from this giggly little. Yeah, we're gonna, we're gonna transition him out. I'm gonna bring in my next interview. Gets my daughter. All right, Salem, can you say bye? Bye.
B
Bye. Bye. Bye. Bye.
A
All right, everyone. So now I am here with my oldest child, Sadie. Sadie, welcome to the show. Sadie, how old are you five? Yeah. And what grade are you in? Yeah. But what grade are you in? Kindergarten.
B
Kindergarten?
A
Yeah. This is your first interview. So are you a little bit nervous?
B
Yeah.
A
Yeah. So what do you like most about school?
B
Playing with friends.
A
Yeah. And talk to the microphone. So your friends are not just kids your age. You're also friends with some of the seventh and eighth graders, too, right?
B
In the afternoon, I play with.
A
Naomi. Yeah.
B
Naomi Schultz.
A
Oh, yeah. Yeah. Okay.
B
And Mr. Schultz is my teacher.
A
Yes. So what do you want to be when you grow up?
B
Mama.
A
You want to be a mom? Yeah. Is that going to be your main focus, or do you want to do other things? I know before you had a list of things you wanted to do. Gotta talk on the microphone.
B
I want to be a teacher and a mom.
A
Okay. You're gonna be very busy then. And are you excited about Christmas?
B
Yeah. And because Christmas is a time where we celebrate God. Jesus's birthday.
A
Yeah. How old is Jesus? How many years has it been, do you know? Since he was born. Over 2,000 years. That's a long time. Because. How old are you again? They can't see your hand. How old? Five. Yeah, you're five. Five and a half. Practically a half matters. What do you want for Christmas?
B
A fake laptop.
A
You need a laptop. I don't think you're gonna get a laptop. But what else do you want? Let's see, you had a list of.
B
I want a.
A
A purse. You said a purse and a wallet. Still. Okay. And you also wanted a globe, right?
B
Yes.
A
Because you want to look at the world. Yeah, I think that's a good idea. Very educational. Is there anything else that you want for Christmas, or is that pretty much it?
B
That's pretty much it.
A
Oh, my goodness. Well, do you want to tell everybody listening what's happening in our family? Something new and big is happening. Okay, tell them what it is. All right.
B
Mama's having another kid. Now we're gonna have three. It's a boy.
A
Yes, it's a boy. And we're not sure what his name is yet. We can't decide. But when is his birthday gonna be, roughly? Sometime in June.
B
June.
A
Yeah. So he might end up sharing a birthday with Salen.
B
Or Dad.
A
Yeah. Or Daddy. Everyone's birthday is just all at once. But when is your birthday?
B
The end of July.
A
Yeah. Yeah. Now let's go back to Christmas for a second. So you said that we celebrate Christmas because it's Jesus birthday, and like, some people listening may not know who Jesus is. Can you tell us who is Jesus?
B
Jesus is a person that made us and made the world. And he also made. We had babies and everything.
A
Huh?
B
Everything. He made workers. He made anything. He even made far away places. And he is. Jesus is the one that died on the cross for us.
A
Yeah, that's right. So Jesus is God. He is the son of God. Yes. Yeah. And that's such an important thing to remember, because Christmas really isn't about Santa, although it is definitely about giving. That's why we give presents and receive presents, because Jesus was the best present we could ever receive.
B
When Jesus was just a little kid, after he got a tiny bit older, people, the men gave him what?
A
I don't know what park are you talking about?
B
Gold. Oh, gold.
A
Frankincense and myrrh. Yes. When he's still a little guy, the three wise men showed up with very expensive presents for him because they knew that he was the king, even though he was born in a barn. Your dad likes to tell you that you were born in a barn, but you were born where? In a bath in. In a cattle tank.
B
What's that?
A
It's a. A big watering place for cattle. It was a brand new cattle tank. It was never, ever used for livestock. And it was covered with a blanket on the bottom. It was so squishy for me. And then there was a plastic liner over that to, of course, make sure the blanket didn't get wet. And because I'm not very big, I could swim around in that thing. I mean, I would have if I hadn't been in labor with somebody. You. For a very long time, but. Yeah. You weren't born in a barn, but kind of close. So, anyway, last question. What exactly do you think I do for work? What do you think when you're at school and I'm at home working, what do you think I'm doing that whole.
B
Time you're on your laptop doing work?
A
Yeah, Learned helping.
B
Nap.
A
Helping what?
B
Dad.
A
Sometimes. And sometimes your dad's helping me. Yep. Basically. Your brother said the same thing. He said I was typing. That's what I do for work. Yeah, I guess that. That. That is part of it, so. Well, Sadie, thank you so much for being on my podcast today. And could you tell everyone to have a Merry Christmas? Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year. All right, guys, I saved the best for last. I finally got my husband to sit down and be interviewed, but I promised him that I was going to keep this short and as painless as possible because he doesn't really like being interviewed. And we both kind of got the giggles as soon as I hit record. So, Matt, welcome to the Kate Show.
C
Oh, thanks for having me.
A
So nobody has ever Matt before as far as, like, my whole online life, but he has been my husband for almost as long as I've been a business owner, and he owns and runs the business with me and Matt. What part of the business do you help with?
C
I take care of the financials and keeping things in check.
A
Yeah, and he does a great job of it. You guys have heard me say in the podcast before, when it comes to money, like, I know how to make money, but after that, like, I'm such a weirdo, I don't even want to think about spending it or managing it or doing all the things. So Matt takes care of managing business finances and also even our personal finances, and he does a great job. So thanks for that, honey.
C
You bet. It's my pleasure.
A
Although I do tell you every now and then that technically, I could fire you.
C
You could, but I don't think you will.
A
I won't. Okay, so I want to ask you, do you listen to my podcast?
C
I have never listened to your podcast.
A
Okay, this is something I knew, but I had to, like, call him out on the show, so. No, he works in the business. He doesn't listen to my podcast. Although one time, you. You did turn it on when you were on a job site helping a friend, right?
C
I did. Yeah. We listened to it for a few minutes, and my friend was just kind of like, where does your wife come up with this stuff?
A
Yeah, it was really funny, and it made me feel really awkward knowing that they were listening to my podcast. I don't know why. By the way, guys, I just found out that over the last year, my podcast audience on Spotify has grown, like, 67%. And the. The video version of my podcast is in the top 20% of all video podcasts in Spotify. So that was pretty exciting. As soon as I found that out yesterday, I was like, matt, oh, my gosh, I'm gonna cry. And you were happy.
C
I had no idea what all that meant, but she explained it to me.
A
Yeah, he was like, wait, what are we excited about? So, yeah, he's not really into the podcast, but that is okay. He likes the. The results of it, the money that it produces. Okay, so my next question has nothing to do with business, but I'd really like to know, and I think our children would like to know too. Why haven't you shot a deer yet?
C
Good question.
A
So we're recording this right before Christmas. It's not currently hunting season. We're kind of in between hunting seasons, and we have acreage, we have woods. He's been hunting. You've seen a lot of deer?
C
I see a lot of deer, but I like the deers with big antlers, and I'm holding out for just the right one. But then I felt bad because my daughter Sadie kept asking me to shoot a deer. So then I had every intention to shoot a doe so she could have the excitement that I have and share that with me. But then when it came the opportunity to shoot a doe, it was a mom and her two twins. Her twins that we've been watching for a long time, and I didn't have it in me to do that.
A
He's a good man, everybody. He didn't want to take that mom away from her babies, so. So that's why he didn't get a deer yet. Okay, next question. Of our two kids that are currently outside the womb, because we're not sure about the little guy in my belly yet, but of the two kids outside the womb, which one do you think is more like you?
C
Probably sailing. Very mischievous. Very naughty.
A
He's so naughty, but he's so cute. He's got your dimple. He's got your eyebrows. Like he is just a little mini mat. It's adorable. And he's also started becoming very neat and tidy, and that's something that you are. I mean, you're not ocd, but you call yourself ocd. And Salen has started lining up his shoes. He started lining up toys. He loves it when things are tidy. So are you. Are you happy to see these traits come out in him, or. Because sometimes it exhausts you, being as tidy and as organized as you are?
C
It does. It does exhaust me. That's why I have my own space where I don't have to worry about things always being perfect in the house, but they're perfect in my space. In my mind, his space is a.
A
Shop that's pretty much the same size as our house, and he's the only one that goes in there. He's got industrial cabinetry. He's got cold storage. He's got workshop space. I mean, this man is so spoiled.
C
I am.
A
Yes, you are. That's okay. I think you deserve it. Okay, my final question for you is a little bit more serious. When I first started the business, we just got married. We only known each other for less than a year when we got married and I started the business and we got married. And then it was really hard. Like you saw me at the most discouraging points where I'm like, standing there in tears because I just lost a client when I felt like I was so close to finally making a full time income. And you kept telling me, don't give up, don't give up. And I just want to know what made you be so encouraging. Like, why did you believe in the business so much?
C
Well, nothing's easy at first, but with great work comes great reward. And I knew that you wanted to put in the effort and do everything to make it successful, and I wanted to support you on seeing it become successful.
A
Did you ever think it would be this successful?
C
I have no idea.
A
Okay. We went into it blind. I didn't. I mean, I think God has abundantly blessed the business so much. I mean, yes, I had to work my butt off for it and do a lot of things that I don't particularly enjoy, but after, you know, 11, it'll be 11 years in February of 2025. And I don't know, I'm just. I'm really proud of what God's given us and what we've created together. But it's not easy even now, is it?
C
It is not. The struggle is real.
A
Yeah. Yeah. Like, you are the one that hears every rant I ever have about anything in the business. You help me with pricing strategies. Those are long conversations.
C
And it's really hard to get her to turn this all off and just be in the moment because this stuff weighs on her very heavily. And I have to remind her that the day is done work and we gotta move on.
A
Yeah, yeah, it's really hard. They have to have like a transition period. And this is maybe the issue of working from home. Like, I step outside my office, but my brain is still in the office and I'm like, trying to make dinner or interact with the kids, but I'm still thinking about the last email I sent or the strategy that I'm working on. And yeah, it's. It is hard to turn it off, but that's also why. And I just have to praise you a little bit more. That's why I'm so glad you're such an involved husband and father. Like, aside from everything you're doing in the business and aside from all the other irons in the fire that you have, I mean, you're a very busy man. Your schedule changes at the drop of a hat, but you're also super involved with our kids, with maintaining our home. You guys, the. The problem I found with being married to someone who Used to be a lead remodeling carpenter is that anytime I walk around with something that needs to be assembled or installed or hung on the wall, I immediately get it taken away from me. He's like, no, why do you do that?
C
It's got to be done.
A
Wow. Yeah. So I can't get away with anything around here. But the cool thing is I never have to ask him twice if I'm like, hey, can you put this together or can you hang this on the wall? And he, like, measures things and gets his laser out and he just makes everything so perfect. So that's nice. And also, this winter, your big project.
C
Is finishing our basement because we have another one on the way.
A
Yeah. And this. Well, you can just go ahead.
C
While we were trying to build a house, when we had our first one, things kind of went south with that.
A
Yeah.
C
And then the second one, before we had him, I was in the process of finishing our basement, our last home. And I think we had carpeting installed and all the final touches made like a week before he came. So, Yeah. I have six months to finish. About 12 to 1300 square feet. It's doable.
A
Yes. Oh, my gosh. It's going to be really beautiful, though. I'm excited. I mean, this isn't like our forever, forever home, but it's definitely our long, longer term home. And it's going to really increase property value. It's also going to add two more bedrooms, media room, playroom, bathroom. Right?
C
That is correct. And lots of storage.
A
Too much storage. We're kind of on the minimal side, so we don't really need all the storage that we currently have, even on the upper level. But that's okay. I still have kitchen cabinets that are empty.
C
That's a good problem to have.
A
Yeah, I think so too. Like, people have told me, I thought you'd have it filled up by now. And I'm like, with what? Oh, okay. Before we wrap this up, we. What's the one kitchen item that we've never purchased since we got married? And it bothers you chronically that we still don't have it, but we never bought it because we can never agree on what to get.
C
A really nice cutlery set.
A
Yeah, we do not have a cutlery set. It is the stupidest thing over a decade and we have not been able.
C
To agree because Kate would just go to Target and buy a set for like a hundred bucks. And I. I would want a set for like 1500, $2000. Like high quality Japanese style Damascus steel.
A
Yeah. And see My problem is I would totally cut off a finger if we had that. And, I mean, I'm the one who does pretty much all the cooking. I mean, you do all the grilling, but when it comes to me in the kitchen, I. I have to just know my limits. And if I have really sharp knives, I'm not going to do well.
C
We use steak knives.
A
Say that. This is so dumb. Yes. Okay, this is true. Now you know something new about me, and this is why I don't have my husband on the show a lot, because he would just tell you all the things about me. But anyway, thank you for being on the show.
C
It's my pleasure.
A
Was it, though, because I had to, like, drag you and nag you to get you in here?
C
I can say I did it.
A
Yeah, it's not your favorite thing, but, you know, all your friends are going to listen to this because I put in our personal Christmas card. And I'm also sending out an email to all my business contacts that I interviewed my husband and kids on the podcast. So they're all going to tune in just to hear you and the kids, Joy. I know, right? Well, anyway, guys, I hope that you have a wonderful holiday season. Merry Christmas to each and every one of you. And I think that wraps this up. So goodbye, 2024, and hello to the new year.
