Brad Pitt
Movie what's the difference between Joshua Pierce and Sonny Hayes?
Stephen Colbert
A lot of decades hard won experience of living in a Van says the guy still lives with his mom.
Brad Pitt
Says a guy with two pet.
Stephen Colbert
Says the guy with trips.
Brad Pitt
Says the guy with a full house.
Stephen Colbert
Wait, I don't even live with my mum, okay?
Brad Pitt
She just cooks for me sometimes. If you had any constructive criticism for each other, where would it be?
Unknown
Don't be such an asshole.
Stephen Colbert
That was constructive. Please. Welcome to the Late Show. Kerry Condon. So nice to meet you. Thanks. When I saw you in advance of the Nasheer and I had to go, like, who was that? I had to find out who that actress was. You're so fantastic.
Brad Pitt
Thanks very much.
Stephen Colbert
And you're great in this, too.
Brad Pitt
Thank you.
Stephen Colbert
We just saw the clip of you in the new movie, F1. The movie?
Brad Pitt
Yes.
Stephen Colbert
Not to be confused with F1. The F1.
Brad Pitt
Yes.
Stephen Colbert
You had a big, glitzy premiere. Was it just last night?
Brad Pitt
It was last night. Here in Times Square.
Stephen Colbert
I know you, like, shut down Times Square.
Brad Pitt
Yeah.
Stephen Colbert
Well, two blocks, that's a lot.
Brad Pitt
Yeah, I know.
Stephen Colbert
I heard it was four blocks. Don't sort yourself short. Here you go. And here you are with a bunch of cars behind you right there.
Brad Pitt
Yeah. They got them in Times Square.
Stephen Colbert
That's amazing. That's extraordinary. How was the evening? Was it fun?
Brad Pitt
It was great. Yeah. I wondered who brought the cars into Times Square, though. It's like, how do they get them there?
Stephen Colbert
Brad, probably.
Brad Pitt
Maybe Brad drove them off. Yeah, exactly.
Stephen Colbert
That was good.
Brad Pitt
Yeah. It was great to hear it with an audience. Yeah. People cheered at places and stuff. It was fun.
Stephen Colbert
You know what's interesting is that your character is Irish.
Brad Pitt
Yeah.
Stephen Colbert
Yeah. But she's less Irish than you are because you have a stronger Irish accent in person than your character has in the film. Did you have to. Did they say, could you dial it back a little bit? Did anyone ask you to do that?
Brad Pitt
No, I think I just. So many other things on my mind, like props and all. So glad I didn't have to think about an accent.
Stephen Colbert
Oh. I mean, they're both. You sound beautiful. Both here and in the film. I'm not trying to say one.
Brad Pitt
I think I sound a bit hoarse now, actually.
Stephen Colbert
A little bit. A little bit. You've been doing too much of this.
Brad Pitt
It sounds like I've been smoking Marlboro's for the whole week, but haven't.
Stephen Colbert
No. Can you tell people a little bit about the movie and who you played?
Brad Pitt
Okay, so the film is about this team in Formula one that are crap. Like, they're losing really badly.
Stephen Colbert
And having Javier Bardem is exactly.
Brad Pitt
Know your grand. I love Javier Bardem. Too. So Javier Bardem owns our team and he used to be a racer. And he goes to meet this Yank played by Brad Pitt, who's a friend of his from years ago and brings him back to England to help our team out. Like we're kind of bringing him out. He's not really retired, but bring him back to F1.
Stephen Colbert
Yeah, yeah, yeah. After like 30 years of not racing F1.
Brad Pitt
Yes, exactly. Yeah.
Stephen Colbert
Pretty extraordinary. And he's been racing all around the world and everything.
Brad Pitt
Yeah, he's been doing other. So he's not that rusty.
Stephen Colbert
And who do you play in this?
Brad Pitt
And I play the team technical director who's basically like, if you don't know anything about F1, I'm just basically in charge of the car. Like, at' n't got to do with the car.
Stephen Colbert
You're the main female character in a cast full of all these super macho guys, but you're the smart one who actually knows how everything works.
Brad Pitt
Yes.
Stephen Colbert
That's a good feeling. That's nice.
Brad Pitt
That was nice. Yeah.
Stephen Colbert
You get to tell them what to do a little bit.
Brad Pitt
Yeah. I was nurturing as well too, to.
Stephen Colbert
Them, I guess, a little bit. You play a little bit of poker too?
Brad Pitt
Yes, and I did that. I was kind of pissed off because the way they filmed it, like, you couldn't see that it actually was me doing that. You know that shuffle. Yeah, yeah. I practiced it for ages. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Stephen Colbert
You also, you know, you're not to give anything too much away, but you and Brad have a little love interest there.
Brad Pitt
That's okay. We can say there's a bit of romance.
Stephen Colbert
Bit of romance. There's a bit of romance in the movie. I don't know if that's a big surprise or anything like that. There's a. No surprise that people.
Brad Pitt
Yeah, I know.
Stephen Colbert
And was that part of the draw in any way? I mean, it was pleasant, I imagine. I mean, just, just. I mean, it's acting. I realize you're acting, but there's some full contact snuggles.
Brad Pitt
They scheduled it for half eight on a Thursday morning.
Stephen Colbert
8:30 on a Thursday morning.
Brad Pitt
Yeah.
Stephen Colbert
That was the romance.
Brad Pitt
Come on. Yeah.
Stephen Colbert
Wow. Wow.
Brad Pitt
So, yeah, I had a vodka orange juice for my breakfast that morning.
Stephen Colbert
There you go. And you rough them up a little bit too.
Brad Pitt
Well, you know, we were supposed to be in Vegas and we're supposed to be, you know, out on a night out or whatever. Anyways, you're giving it all away.
Stephen Colbert
We're moving tickets right now.
Brad Pitt
Okay, good, good. Okay, good.
Stephen Colbert
You've been working since you were a teenager. I just found out that. Here you are. Yes. You are the youngest actress to ever play Ophelia in a Royal Shakespeare Company production. Here you are at 19. I'm just curious. Who's your Hamlet there?
Brad Pitt
That was Sam West.
Stephen Colbert
Oh, Sam west, right.
Brad Pitt
Do you know what's gross is my hair is all short because I was doing Martin McDonagh's lieutenant of Inishmore.
Stephen Colbert
Yes.
Brad Pitt
In Repertoire. So I zoomed them both at the same time.
Stephen Colbert
And you had to have short hair for that?
Brad Pitt
I had to shave my head off. Yeah.
Stephen Colbert
Wow.
Brad Pitt
Well, not my whole head.
Stephen Colbert
Oh, yes. Yes. How'd you, like, shaved my head once? How'd you like it?
Brad Pitt
Do you know, actually, it was kind of liberating.
Stephen Colbert
Yeah.
Brad Pitt
But it's a lot of maintenance. Cause it grows really quickly.
Stephen Colbert
Oh, yeah. But it cuts down on the shampooing.
Brad Pitt
Yeah, it does, actually.
Stephen Colbert
It's just scrub and go.
Brad Pitt
Yeah, yeah.
Stephen Colbert
You can just use a bar of soap up there.
Brad Pitt
Bit of wax.
Stephen Colbert
At 19 there with the Royal Shakespeare Company playing Ophelia. Were you terrified or were you too young to know to be terrified?
Brad Pitt
Yeah, I think I was too young, Kind of Ignorance is bliss. A little bit. And also, I was too busy. Like, I was doing too. I was doing the two plays at the same time. So sometimes it was like two Hamlets in one day or Martin's playing that. So I just was too busy.
Stephen Colbert
You ever mix up the two?
Brad Pitt
No, of course. No. No.
Stephen Colbert
You Never.
Brad Pitt
But it was fun to do Shakespeare, and it was fun to listen to it. Cause I'd die, like, an hour and a half before the end.
Stephen Colbert
Oh, that's right. Float around in a creek with a pond with flowers in your hair.
Brad Pitt
Strange. I used to go up to the changing room and have a shower for, like, an hour because I was so, like. Oh, come on. Like, I would take ages for the play to end.
Stephen Colbert
Wow.
Brad Pitt
But looking back, it was weird because I drowned. You know, I didn't really think about it.
Stephen Colbert
Right. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Do you think. Just curious. And this is even having to make it air. We can cut this out if you don't want this to be public.
Brad Pitt
Oh, God.
Stephen Colbert
Do you think Ophelia did the wrong thing of letting her father listen behind, like, the curtain while she's talking to Hamlet? You know, the sort of. Is she doing the wrong thing?
Brad Pitt
She gave him the gift or whatever.
Stephen Colbert
Yeah. Giving the letters back and everything like that. Is she doing the wrong thing there?
Brad Pitt
Sure. She was only a young one, so how could she be doing anything wrong.
Stephen Colbert
Because she lied to her boyfriend. He said.
Brad Pitt
Terry, thank you so much for having me.
Stephen Colbert
