Stephen Colbert
Hey everybody, it's Stephen Colbert. What day is this? What day of the year is this?
Evie (Stephen Colbert's wife)
This is Friday, December 26th.
Stephen Colbert
The feast of St. Stephen. Oh, what's that on the feast of Stephen? Well, it's the first saint Stephen was martyred. He was the first martyr. He was stoned to death. I believe in Antioch. And the day after Christmas is the feast of St. Stephen.
Evie (Stephen Colbert's wife)
Okay.
Stephen Colbert
You know, good king wins this last look down.
Evie (Stephen Colbert's wife)
What was his thing? What's he the saint of?
Stephen Colbert
Getting beaten to death with a rock. I mean, he was first martyrs, what he's known for. I don't know whether he's the. I don't know what he's the patron saint of or anything like that. That's odd I should know that. I don't. I don't know what that is.
Evie (Stephen Colbert's wife)
I just saw a saint. I saw a mummified saint.
Stephen Colbert
Which one? Catherine of Siena.
Evie (Stephen Colbert's wife)
No, St. Francis Cabrin. What's her name? She's up. She's up by the. By the cloisters. She's up. Yeah.
Stephen Colbert
St. Francis Karane.
Evie (Stephen Colbert's wife)
Yeah, she's cool. There's a. There's a beautiful church up there. She's the patron saint of immigrants.
Stephen Colbert
Oh, good.
Evie (Stephen Colbert's wife)
So you got a lot of people from all different walks of life in New York.
Stephen Colbert
Other deep cut knowledge on December 26th.
Evie (Stephen Colbert's wife)
Let's go.
Stephen Colbert
Is that Boxing Day? Or is that. Is that after Thanksgiving? Is that Boxing Day?
Evie (Stephen Colbert's wife)
Let me look it up.
Stephen Colbert
It doesn't matter, okay? It's not Boxing Day for us. We're Americans.
Evie (Stephen Colbert's wife)
Yeah.
Stephen Colbert
It is the day Evie and I had our first date.
Evie (Stephen Colbert's wife)
Oh, really?
Stephen Colbert
Yeah. I. I was in Charleston, and there was. And, you know, we had all the, you know, family stuff you got to do leading up to Christmas and the day of Christmas. And I had met this woman in. In May. In late May that same year. And I was home, and I was single, and I was thinking, oh, she seems like the sort of person who would go home for Christmas, because I knew she was from Charleston.
Evie (Stephen Colbert's wife)
Yeah.
Stephen Colbert
And so I called her, I think maybe on Christmas Eve. First I called. I didn't know which McGee. It was in downtown Charleston. So I called. I got her cousin. I got her dad's cousin. Hall T. McGee.
Evie (Stephen Colbert's wife)
Whoa.
Stephen Colbert
And said, no, you want my cousin Peter's house? And so I called. But his. His name is actually Joseph. It was odd. It was. It was called Peter, but his name was Joseph because his mother just liked Peter Rabbit. And so I got. I got. I got him. And. And then Evie came on, and I asked her if she wanted to go out, have a. She said, I asked poorly.
Evie (Stephen Colbert's wife)
I asked.
Stephen Colbert
I want you to know. She said. I asked poorly. I said, would you like to go out for a drink or something? And she's like, yeah, sounds great. She got a drink or something. What is that? And then I called back. I called back on the 26th, and I said, how about dinner? And we went to a restaurant called Marianne's.
Evie (Stephen Colbert's wife)
Oh, nice.
Stephen Colbert
In Charleston, which is now called the Matador. It's sort of a nicer Mexican restaurant with a lot of tequilas and. And. And mezcal and. And we went there for dinner, and it was. It worked out.
Evie (Stephen Colbert's wife)
It worked out.
Stephen Colbert
It sure did. It sure did work out.
Evie (Stephen Colbert's wife)
It worked out.
Stephen Colbert (Podcast Host)
Yeah.
Stephen Colbert
We kissed and everything. It was great. I don't want to, you know, get too. I don't want to sell the podcast too hard.
Evie (Stephen Colbert's wife)
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Stephen Colbert
But we kissed and everything. It was great.
Evie (Stephen Colbert's wife)
Oh, it's really lovely.
Stephen Colbert
Yeah. I remember the. The. The. The. On Christmas because it was a big. I think there had been a storm. We didn't have water or power or something. I forgot what it was. I went out and had Christmas dinner out at a restaurant with my sister and her kids and my mom and her oldest daughter said to me, mom says you're going on a date tomorrow night. I said, I am. And do you like her? I said, I do. I like this girl. Are you going to kiss her? And I said, I'm going to try. And she went. I said, yeah. Pretty crazy, huh? Pretty crazy, huh?
Evie (Stephen Colbert's wife)
That's really nice. Were you there a long time? Did you spend more time together that break, or did you see again soon?
Stephen Colbert
No, I don't think. I think she went back to New York. I think we had that date. I think we had that. Oh, I remember very specifically saying, what are you doing tomorrow? Cause we had such a good date. And she said, I am going out to the country to go kayaking with a wildlife photographer. And it was definitely a day. It was a day date.
Evie (Stephen Colbert's wife)
Yeah.
Stephen Colbert
And I didn't like that at all. She had a date with some other guy.
Evie (Stephen Colbert's wife)
Oh, wow.
Stephen Colbert
She had a date the next day, like, a day date. Going canoeing, like, in, like, some blackwater swamp with a wildlife photographer. And I thought that was kind of cool. Yeah, how can I compete with that? I'm some improv guy from Chicago.
Evie (Stephen Colbert's wife)
Well, obviously it worked out for you.
Stephen Colbert
It did work out. Like she said, it was. It wasn't much of a date.
Evie (Stephen Colbert's wife)
Anyone can get a canoe.
Stephen Colbert
And then I left her a message on New Year's Eve wishing her happy New Year's Eve on her phone. And her roommate came back and played that. And she goes, he likes you.
Evie (Stephen Colbert's wife)
Nice.
Stephen Colbert
And it was true.
Evie (Stephen Colbert's wife)
Nice. Very close.
Stephen Colbert
I remember that their answering machine. Their answering machine had the background music on, like, hi, you've reached, you know, heavy. And, you know, it was Doc of the Bay.
Evie (Stephen Colbert's wife)
Oh, cool.
Stephen Colbert
Yeah, I was like, oh, good quality. Otis's Dock of the Bay. Yeah. I was like, oh, quality choice. Quality choice.
Evie (Stephen Colbert's wife)
That's. Those things are important early in our. Yeah, yeah. That's awesome.
Stephen Colbert
What am I in for here?
Evie (Stephen Colbert's wife)
Yeah, exactly.
Stephen Colbert
Yeah.
Evie (Stephen Colbert's wife)
Oh, that's so sweet. That's a nice way to keep every holiday really nice. That memory.
Stephen Colbert (Podcast Host)
This year will be.
Stephen Colbert
This will be 35 years.
Jerry Greenfield (Ben & Jerry's Co-founder)
Wow.
Stephen Colbert
Since our first date.
Evie (Stephen Colbert's wife)
Yeah, that's really nice.
Stephen Colbert
Yeah.
Evie (Stephen Colbert's wife)
Wow. Sweet. Beautiful. Well, this is the best day of the year on the podcast today. So along with the Christmas spirit, the joy, the love that everyone shares, what's the best day of the year at this show?
Stephen Colbert
Oh, the best day of the year is the. My favorite night is the night of the Christmas party, which is generally not the last night of the year, but that is the night that the staff gives away all of the Money that the AmeriCone Dream Ice Cream Fund gathered that year, because, thanks to Ben and Jerry, I have an ice cream Americone Dream. All of my proceeds from that goes into a charitable fund called the American Dream Ice Cream Fund. And the staff gives it away. And this year, we gave everything away. We gave away $1.38 million, 138 charities, and $10,000 to each charity.
Evie (Stephen Colbert's wife)
Insane.
Stephen Colbert
And we emptied the bank because we always. We try to pile it up as years go on in case we need to do something big like send a big chunk of money down to hurricane victims or something. But this was a really special year.
Evie (Stephen Colbert's wife)
It was a really special year. It's special every year, but there's something about going down in rehearsal like we always do every day doing the show, and then you have a packet and just start reading, reading, reading. Hundreds of charity names that everyone. Like, they're all really specific, and you can almost kind of tell who maybe picked what based on their interest or where they're from. It's really magical. It's really special as someone sitting in the audience who just, like, fills out a Google form, and somehow I've donated $10,000 to, you know, something I really care about. Yeah.
Stephen Colbert
It makes me so happy to know.
Stephen Colbert (Podcast Host)
And I also love the people who.
Stephen Colbert
Just joined this year, like, whatever the year is, that they haven't been on the show before, and they don't know.
Stephen Colbert (Podcast Host)
That that's part of the.
Stephen Colbert
Gig. That's not described to you when you get hired here, but at the end of the year, you have an opportunity to give away a bunch of money because of the ice cream fund to a charity of your choice. It's always fun when I see those people know that for the first time.
Evie (Stephen Colbert's wife)
Totally. And it's just a really special day where, like, you know, you hope that all the jokes we're working on all day are making people laugh and making a difference, but it's like, that's a big difference that's being made. Yeah. So. And Ben and Jerry. Come on. Come on. Nicest guys.
Stephen Colbert
They're so lovely. We had them on this year for that.
Evie (Stephen Colbert's wife)
I loved that. I love that they're here on the show Oberlin alone, just like me and Maya are. My.
Stephen Colbert
Didn't know that.
Evie (Stephen Colbert's wife)
Oh, yeah. I'm always. Whenever. Jerry sometimes comes and scoops for us in the kitchen when there's a new flavor, which is. I'm starstruck every single time. That's the ice cream man. This is the best day of the year with Ben and Jerry. Merry Christmas, Stephen. Happy holidays. Merry Christmas. It's going to be a really happy new year.
Stephen Colbert
It is.
Evie (Stephen Colbert's wife)
I'm excited.
Stephen Colbert
I am excited, too.
Evie (Stephen Colbert's wife)
I'm excited for 2026.
Stephen Colbert
Come back strong.
Evie (Stephen Colbert's wife)
Yeah. Hell, yeah. Welcome. Welcome back.
Stephen Colbert (Podcast Host)
Hey. My next guests are childhood friends who turned their dream into one of the most iconic ice cream brands on the planet. Please welcome to the Late Show, Ben and Jerry. Oh, my goodness, guys, it's so great to see you again. Listen, a chat with Ben and Jerry has to come with some props. Gentlemen, shall we? Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes. Grab your weapons over there. Okay, just to remind everybody, this is Americone Dream. Where's my spoon? Give me my spoon. Give him a spoon. He thought you were just going to go bobbing for caramel. All right. It's vanilla ice cream, the caramel swirl and fudge covered waffle pieces.
Stephen Colbert
There you go.
Jerry Greenfield (Ben & Jerry's Co-founder)
You finally figured that out after all these years.
Stephen Colbert (Podcast Host)
Yeah. So this is. You're here partly because we're celebrating an 18 year relationship tonight. Do you guys. I remember how this began. Do you remember how this relationship began?
Jerry Greenfield (Ben & Jerry's Co-founder)
Well, you know, you were doing the Colbert Report.
Stephen Colbert (Podcast Host)
Yeah.
Jerry Greenfield (Ben & Jerry's Co-founder)
Before you were Stephen Colbert, you were Stephen Colbert, you know, and I think you were sort of a quirky, anti authoritarian sort of guy. And we said, that's what we need at Ben and Jerry's. And, you know, knowing, of course, you were going to reach the heights that you currently have reached.
Stephen Colbert (Podcast Host)
Thank you very much. Yeah, catch me on the peak. Now, before that, what I remember is how it actually came about. And Ben, I'm just curious if this is the way it normally goes, which is, I thought we were going to work together on a flavor. And he's laughing already. And a cooler just showed up at my office with dry ice in it and three unmarked packages.
Jerry Greenfield (Ben & Jerry's Co-founder)
Pints.
Stephen Colbert (Podcast Host)
It was like this, but just white with numbers on the top. And I was to try all three of them and go. Any one of these appeal to you? Is that how it normally goes?
Ben Cohen (Ben & Jerry's Co-founder)
Well, you know, I channeled the flavors out of the collective unconscious. The collective flavor unconscious.
Stephen Colbert (Podcast Host)
So you're like an oracle?
Ben Cohen (Ben & Jerry's Co-founder)
Kind of. Kind of. And this flavor was in my head, you know, I knew that chocolate covered sugar cone pieces would be a real hit. And somebody sucked that idea out of my brain and into your pint.
Stephen Colbert (Podcast Host)
Well, how's it doing? Working great. Working for me. Is it still a top 10 flavor?
Jerry Greenfield (Ben & Jerry's Co-founder)
Absolutely. Top 10 rock solid.
Stephen Colbert (Podcast Host)
Yeah.
Jerry Greenfield (Ben & Jerry's Co-founder)
Year after year in the top 10.
Stephen Colbert (Podcast Host)
Well, there's like, how many flavors are there? Like 80 flavors or something all together. 80 flavors. But I know there are 300 retired flavors. And I'm curious, have there been any real, real mistakes? Have you ever, Ben, have you ever shanked Oracle? Ever shanked it?
Ben Cohen (Ben & Jerry's Co-founder)
There was lemon peppermint carob chip.
Stephen Colbert (Podcast Host)
Lemon peppermint carob chip. It was almost acceptable with Lemon peppermint. And just pushed the entire thing into a ditch.
Jerry Greenfield (Ben & Jerry's Co-founder)
It was a mistake. I mean, we weren't supposed to make the flavor, and I was making the ice cream.
Ben Cohen (Ben & Jerry's Co-founder)
And he finally admits it, that it was his fault. Right. It was anonymous before.
Evie (Stephen Colbert's wife)
Wow.
Ben Cohen (Ben & Jerry's Co-founder)
Now on live tv. What? This is like national tv, right?
Stephen Colbert (Podcast Host)
You flew too close to the sun. He came up with me.
Jerry Greenfield (Ben & Jerry's Co-founder)
So, you know, several years ago, Ben and I realized that it wasn't that great for us to say we were wrong. We wanted to be more affirmative about it. We now say, I stand corrected.
Stephen Colbert (Podcast Host)
Do you guys remember coming on the Rapport back on in the old days?
Evie (Stephen Colbert's wife)
Yeah.
Stephen Colbert (Podcast Host)
And Richard Holbrook, because I had a beef with Willie Nelson. Cause Willie got an ice cream right after my ice cream.
Jerry Greenfield (Ben & Jerry's Co-founder)
Yep. Yep.
Stephen Colbert (Podcast Host)
And what was it was called? Peach Cobbler.
Jerry Greenfield (Ben & Jerry's Co-founder)
Country Peach Cobbler.
Stephen Colbert (Podcast Host)
Country Peach Cobbler. And obviously I was mad at him. And there was a war started, war of words between me and Willie. And to solve it, we brought in the negotiator of the Dayton Peace Accords, Richard Holbrook, to negotiate peace between me and Willie.
Stephen Colbert
And we have a clip right here.
Stephen Colbert (Podcast Host)
I want to thank you for making my ice cream the only celebrity ice cream you're putting out this year.
Jerry Greenfield (Ben & Jerry's Co-founder)
You didn't hear about Willie Nelson. Chilly Willy. The Willie Nelson Country Peach Cobbler.
Evie (Stephen Colbert's wife)
What? What?
Stephen Colbert (Podcast Host)
Willie Nelson has a flavor? There is. What's in it? Shredded tax forms and hash. How do you know my ice cream is not as good or better than your ice cream? All right, Willie, I'm not going to say ladies first, but you do have the pigtails.
Stephen Colbert
Go ahead. All right. Go ahead. You ready? Yep. All right. That's very good.
Stephen Colbert (Podcast Host)
I accept your apology, Willie Nelson.
Stephen Colbert
What do you want?
Stephen Colbert (Podcast Host)
But before we go, I just want to. I want to thank you both for something. We have a tradition at the show that people don't know about is that all my proceeds from this go into something called the AmeriCone Dream Fund. And for the last 18 years, what I have done is I've allowed my staff to give all that money away at the end of the year. Because I only have this ice cream because I have a television show that y' all noticed. And y' all noticed it. Cause it was good. And it was good because of the work that they do. And so we give it away every year. Matter of fact, tonight was the night that we gave away this year's fund. And we actually, we cleared the fund.
Stephen Colbert
Completely this year since it's our last Christmas together.
Stephen Colbert (Podcast Host)
And 138 charities received donations tonight from my staff. Thanks to our partnership with y' all over the years, including what we gave away today. The staff of the Colbert Report and the Late show with Stephen Colbert has donated $7.4 million to charity. Thank you so much. Thank you for making that happen, Ben. Thanks so much. It's been a wonderful partnership. And now the show may be ending with what's happening to Americ. American dream will go on.
Jerry Greenfield (Ben & Jerry's Co-founder)
The dream continues.
Stephen Colbert (Podcast Host)
All right, with that in mind, I would like to end by paraphrasing Ted Kennedy from his 1980 Democratic convention speech. For me this May, this broadcast will come to an end. But for all those who cares have been our own. The work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives. And the Americone dream shall never die. Thank you so much. Americon Dream is available everywhere. Ice cream is sold.
