Stephen Colbert
Hey, everybody. Stephen Colbert here about to read the copy for our sponsor. This is from our friends at Wonderful Pistachios. And I was the wonderful pistachio spokesman for years. Yeah, I have a real close association with nut meat. Okay. You know what they say when they reach for a snack? Don't hold back. And that's exactly the approach with Wonderful Pistachios. The don't hold back snack. These little wonders are so tasty, it feels like getting away with something. But surprise. Each serving has 6 grams of protein and 0 grams of regret. That's right. No guilt. Just glory, glory in our nuts. Whether it's a satisfying crack of in shell pistachios, and that's capitalized in shell, or the smooth, instant gratification of no shells. No judgment. That's just it. Just eat. No judgment. I take issue with one thing. It's instant gratification. It's super tasty smooth.
Becca
It's a hard nut smooth.
Stephen Colbert
Exactly. I mean, even out of the shell, it's still a nut.
Becca
We can't disparage the nuts.
Stephen Colbert
You. I'm not disparaging the nut. I'm describing the nut.
Becca
Don't disparage any flavors.
Stephen Colbert
I'm not. I am celebrating the pistachio right now. I'm on board. I love pistachios. I love. I love crushed pistachio. Like a pistachio crusted trout. Oh, unbelievable. Instead of a trout amandine, a trout pistachio. Fantastic. Enough butter? Who cares?
Becca
Very good.
Stephen Colbert
And I love pistachio ice cream.
Becca
Have you had the sea salt and vinegar? Wonderful pistachio. It's delicious. I get them.
Stephen Colbert
I didn't even know I get them.
Becca
Before the softball games.
Stephen Colbert
But that's. You see, it's been a while since I've been the spokesman for wonderful pistachios. I didn't realize we'd achieved new pistachio technology.
Becca
Yeah. Yeah.
Stephen Colbert
Wow. Wonderful pistachios has every snack style covered. Right now. There's an obsession with jalapeno lime. There is an obsession session. It's almost a disorder. It's spicy, it's zesty. It's basically a flavor roller coaster in a nut. Snacking on the go. Grab a bag of no shells. Feeling contemplative and want to work for it a little. So earning it, they're saying if you want to earn your nut, crack open those in shell beauties. Either way, it's snacking like a champ. So the next time hunger strikes, don't hold back. Unless it's a hunger strike. And Then it's important that you do, because whatever you're doing that for, I'm sure it's a worthwhile cause. Snack like you mean it with wonderful pistachios. Visit wonderfulpistachios.com to learn more.
Becca
That was a wonderful.
Stephen Colbert
I wonder what more there is to learn. We just told them so much. We just told them so much about pistachios, but evidently, there's a whole other world. There's an unexplored vista.
Becca
They got a bunch of flavors. They got dill pickle, jalapeno lime, as we learned, smoky barbecue. There's a lot of different flavors.
Stephen Colbert
Wow. And I would not disparage any of them.
Becca
No, no, no.
Stephen Colbert
Bring it on.
Becca
Nothing bad to say.
Stephen Colbert
Nut me, nut. Nut me with nut meat.
Becca
We're nut.
Stephen Colbert
No, we got nothing but nut. Nutty, nutty, nutty, nutty. Talk about, talk about, talk about, talk about, talk about nutty. Good big moments or small moments.
Becca
They all deserve great style. Our over 800 stylists are here to help you look and feel your best. Visit your local Maurices to find fashion fit for you, with a little help from us.
Stephen Colbert
Hey, this is Stephen Colbert with the Late Show POD Show. And as always, I am joined by my intrepid producer, Becca. Hi, Becca.
Becca
Hi, Steven. Thanks so much for doing these with me.
Stephen Colbert
My pleasure to be here.
Becca
We always have such a great time. This is a really special segment that we just did with your lovely wife, Evie.
Stephen Colbert
Oh, is this a mailbag?
Becca
Yes.
Stephen Colbert
Email. Email inbag.
Becca
Email in bag. Late Joe. Email in bag.
Stephen Colbert
Yeah, sure.
Becca
Yeah. Really lovely.
Stephen Colbert
So nice.
Becca
And one of my favorite parts of this, and you have to explain it for the podcast audience.
Stephen Colbert
Sure, sure.
Becca
Please explain the cocktail hand gesture.
Stephen Colbert
We were talking about who makes better cocktails at the end, and then she said, well, you. I mean, you do it, and you also have. Tell them about your favorite cocktail. And I hold up three fingers. Like, imagine like you're doing. You're holding, like you're gonna shake someone's hand, but raise just your index finger so the bottom three are still there. That's how I like my cocktails. The bottom three is how much liquor I want. And then you just lower the top one like you're doing, like sort of the clicker stick on. Like when you're starting a movie scene, like, click action. I just lower that top finger down a little bit, and that's it. So licker, mixer. The little finger comes down. That's the mixer.
Becca
Yeah, I love that. And you're making old fashions. Which is not an easy cocktail to make at home. Unless you.
Stephen Colbert
I mean, if you're doing it right, it should take you a little time.
Becca
How do you make an old Fashioned? What's your recipe?
Stephen Colbert
You gotta go with Luxardo cherries. You know, a really, really quality cherry. Almost like black. Almost looks like a black cherry. And instead of using sugar cube, I use just some of the syrup from the Luxardo cherry jar.
Becca
Oh, that's nice.
Stephen Colbert
Okay. And then I mean, sometimes I actually use homemade bourbon cherries that Deanna Story, our script supervisor, makes. And so that. And maybe just a little teaspoon of the sugar and the bourbon that comes with that. And then I candy orange rinds at Christmas time. So all throughout the year, I've got candied orange rinds to use in there. And so it's very, very bright, very kind of sunny taste and smell. And you kind of mix that and you muddle that in there. And then, you know, a quality bourbon. Yeah, quality bourbon. One big ice cube. And this is crazy, but because I'm using one big ice cube and it doesn't melt very fast, I might put just a splash, just like a bloop of soda water in there. Oh. Just gives it a little life.
Becca
That's nice. Yeah. Ugh. I love Christmas time when the Deanna jars come make their way to the office. She makes wonderful jars of jams, jellies, pickles, cherries.
Stephen Colbert
Yep. Pickled garlic.
Becca
Good. Oh, my God.
Stephen Colbert
Fantastic. Slice that up and put that on pizza.
Becca
Oh, I didn't get that. I'm gonna have to ask Santa for that.
Stephen Colbert
They have a lobby for that.
Becca
Yeah. All right, well, this is email in bag with Evie. Please enjoy. And if you want to submit a question, I'm gonna drop the link in the episode description and you can find the link in our bio and our socials to ask Steven Evey a question.
Stephen Colbert
Fantastic.
Becca
Enjoy.
Stephen Colbert
Don't delay.
Evie McGee
Folks.
Stephen Colbert
If you watch the show, you know that I've been asking you folks for a while to send in your questions from me and my wife Evie to answer. And we asked you to do it in the most efficient way possible. Write out your question in a physical letter, then take a photograph of that. Then email the photo to us so we can print it out as a physical letter. Again, this is Late show email in bag. Make sure we now get back. That should be longer. That should be longer. As always on Late show email in bag. Please welcome my wife, Evie McGee. Come on out, darling. That's lovely. Is this new? Is this new?
Evie McGee
Yeah.
Stephen Colbert
Beautiful. Please have A seat. Here we go, darling. All right. So there we go. That's a lot of letters. Well, we've gotten hundreds of these letters. We're just going to grab some here at random, right out of the top there. You send us a bunch of questions, and we're going to see how my and Evie's answers line up. That's what we're going to do. I just read that up there. And remember, remember, if you're at home and you're a couple, you can play along. And you should keep score, because we definitely are.
Evie McGee
What are the score? How do I get a point?
Stephen Colbert
What?
Evie McGee
How do I get a point?
Stephen Colbert
Why are you agreeing with me?
Evie McGee
Oh, God, no.
Stephen Colbert
All right, you want to go first?
Evie McGee
You go first. Okay, I'm going to go first.
Becca
All right, hold on.
Stephen Colbert
All right, because it has hundreds, we're going to pick one at random. Ok, here we go. What do we got?
Evie McGee
This is from Mike and Brandon. From Texas.
Stephen Colbert
Sure.
Evie McGee
Oh, I like this. Who is the finder of lost objects in your household? Take a guess.
Stephen Colbert
Of course. Yes, of course it's you. Of course. I have.
Evie McGee
This is how Steven looks for things. Uh, I don't see it. You don't pick it up. You look underneath, or you have to look over there.
Stephen Colbert
I don't see it. That's it. It's not like I don't try. I look.
Evie McGee
You don't even.
Stephen Colbert
I have aphasia for the thing I'm looking for. And what's infuriates me is that I'll pull everything out of a closet. And I go, it's not there. And you'll go in and it'll go. It was sitting on the top of the shelf. I swear. I think you just keep it in your pocket and put it in there to try to drive me crazy.
Evie McGee
No, no.
Stephen Colbert
What do you think?
Evie McGee
I think this is an opportunity to discuss what you do with your telephone.
Stephen Colbert
What?
Evie McGee
I know it's a telephone, iPhone, whatever. You do this, I'm just going to leave it right there. And then you can't find it and it's. Or you see.
Stephen Colbert
No, I don't do that. I do this. I go, all right, I got to put it someplace so I won't lose it. And I put it there.
Evie McGee
But you put it places that aren't even level.
Stephen Colbert
I know. Because I know if I put it in the place that it shouldn't be, then I'll know that it's there.
Evie McGee
That is sad.
Stephen Colbert
Cause I'll remember I put it in the stupid spot.
Evie McGee
That's Sad.
Stephen Colbert
Okay, my turn. I always.
Evie McGee
Am I winning yet? Did I get a point?
Stephen Colbert
Well, you're winning. You're winning if the scoring is based on pure hostility.
Evie McGee
Aw. I'm not being hostile.
Stephen Colbert
Is she being hostile? No, you. Okay, this is from Art in California. Dear S and E, who is right most often?
Becca
Oh.
Stephen Colbert
You are. Oh, you are. You are right. No, you are right most often. You are right most often.
Evie McGee
No, you're always right.
Stephen Colbert
No, you are right. You are always right. I say I'm right most often. You are actually right most often.
Evie McGee
I don't think so.
Stephen Colbert
Oh, I think you are.
Evie McGee
I mean, you're right about facts. I might be right about feelings, maybe.
Stephen Colbert
Wow. After you.
Evie McGee
No, but you know what I mean. Like, you're always right about some random, strange fact that I don't know.
Stephen Colbert
And you're right about human behavior.
Evie McGee
Yes, I think that's all right.
Stephen Colbert
Wow. Wow.
Evie McGee
How's it going so far? Did I get another point?
Stephen Colbert
You got another point. You know why? Because you're right.
Evie McGee
Am I still being hostile?
Stephen Colbert
Yes, you are. What do you got there?
Evie McGee
All right, hang on. This is from Deborah, British Columbia. This is a question. This question is for both of you. What is your favorite memory of one another? PS Canada loves you both.
Stephen Colbert
Oh, that's nice. We like Canada, too.
Evie McGee
That's good. Maybe we should go there.
Stephen Colbert
We can move there. Exactly. My favorite. Oh, there's so many favorite memories of you. One of my earliest favorite memories of you is when we first started dating and I actually was in Canada. I was doing a show in Montreal and I took the train down and you met me at Penn Station. And it was super crowded. And your hair, when it's at a certain length, it kicks out to one side. And I found you in the crowd of Penn Station, had a little flip. I saw her little kick of hair around somebody. I said, oh, I know that hair. And it turned out to be you.
Evie McGee
That's very sweet.
Stephen Colbert
Yeah, that was sweet. Your turn.
Evie McGee
Ok, my turn. I remember the first time I went to visit you in Chicago because I was living in New York and you were in Chicago.
Stephen Colbert
Yes.
Evie McGee
And you were working at Second City. But some friends of yours in another improv group asked you to come look at their show or look at their script. I don't remember. And I tagged along because I was visiting. And I remember how much everybody respected what you said. And you were 29 years old or 28 years old.
Stephen Colbert
I thought I was 26 years old.
Evie McGee
Okay, 26. But it was pretty impressive to me that your Friends valued your opinion, and you were very gentle and kind and helpful.
Stephen Colbert
Wow.
Evie McGee
He was nice.
Stephen Colbert
Good memory. My turn. Is it my turn?
Evie McGee
Yes. No.
Stephen Colbert
Yes, it is my turn. It's my turn. Here we go. Do we have time for more or are we done? One more time. Okay.
Evie McGee
I am not done.
Stephen Colbert
What? Sean. Sean in Ohio, Steven and Evi. As someone whose career revolves around writing about and reviewing movies, I'd love to know what the first movie was that you watched together. Okay, let's see if we remember the same. On three. One, two, three. Backdraft. That's exactly right. We saw Backdraft and we.
Evie McGee
Can we say.
Stephen Colbert
Sure. We were Backdraft. And. Because I was living and working in Chicago and we all knew all these people because it was shot in Chicago and we knew a bunch of people who get burned up in the fires in that movie.
Evie McGee
I feel like it was so early that we, like. I wasn't even sure if we were gonna, like, hold hands in the movie.
Stephen Colbert
100%.
Evie McGee
I mean, it was pretty early in our relationship.
Stephen Colbert
It was very, very early on. I don't think you allowed me to kiss you yet. And I remember at one point knowing that you were the right girl. Because at a very dramatic moment was supposed to be a very impressive dramatic moment in the movie. You laugh. I went, oh, thank God. Oh, thank God. That was a good sign. That was a good sign.
Evie McGee
That was a good sign.
Stephen Colbert
Yeah, exactly.
Evie McGee
My turn. This is from Sherry in New Hampshire.
Stephen Colbert
Okay.
Evie McGee
Dear Evie and Steven, please tell us about your first date. Thank you, Sherry. Oh, God, here we go.
Stephen Colbert
No. What do you mean, here we go?
Evie McGee
You're going to have a long story.
Stephen Colbert
No, I'm not going to.
Evie McGee
And I'm going to say we went to dinner.
Stephen Colbert
You tell it.
Evie McGee
We went to dinner.
Stephen Colbert
We went to dinner. We went to dinner. Yes, Sherry, that's what we did. We went to dinner. I just remember I come home for Christmas. And I had met you before in June, I guess.
Evie McGee
June or May, something like that.
Stephen Colbert
June or May, something like that. And I come home for Christmas this next Christmas. And at that point I was single. Because when I met you, I was not single. Cause my girlfriend at the time had severely broken up with me. And when I saw all working out for me. Exactly. And me too, I gotta say. And then I asked you out to dinner. And we went to a place called Marianne's in Charleston. And on the way there, we ran into a mutual friend named Carlisle Doggett.
Evie McGee
I forgot about that part.
Stephen Colbert
Carlisle Doggett.
Evie McGee
That was embarrassing.
Stephen Colbert
Great Charleston name. Carlisle Doggett. What was embarrassing is that he said, hey, are you guys going out now? And we both went, no, absolutely not. No, we're not going out. And then at the.
Evie McGee
And didn't he say, that makes sense or something? Or someone else said, yeah, he goes.
Stephen Colbert
Oh, that kind of makes sense. You guys are going out and we're. No, no, we're not going out. No, no, no, no, no. And then we sat down, we went to. We had dinner and I told you. You asked me if I played any sports. And what did I say?
Evie McGee
Hacky sack.
Stephen Colbert
Exactly. And she went on a second date with me. It's true. I played a lot of sacky sack. I play a lot of hacky sack.
Evie McGee
Jennifer from Colorado.
Stephen Colbert
Oh, I like Jennifer.
Evie McGee
Oh, I love this. If you two were to get matching tattoos, what? And where would they be?
Stephen Colbert
Oh my God. What would you want?
Evie McGee
Geez, I don't know. Cause I don't really like them.
Stephen Colbert
But you don't like tattoos.
Evie McGee
Well, no, you don't, but. Because I always wonder what it's going to look like when you're older and your skin goes down and the tattoo is sort of saggy.
Stephen Colbert
I think in that regard I would probably get it on my belly.
Evie McGee
Oh, God.
Stephen Colbert
And I would do the Persistence of Memory by Salvador Dali.
Evie McGee
Oh, God.
Stephen Colbert
Where everything's already melting.
Evie McGee
The clock is going.
Stephen Colbert
The clock would just. The clock would just go down. We got one more. Okay. This is from Heather and Travis. Hi, guys. Heather and Travis. Tennessee. Tennessee. Here. Dear Steven and Evie, who makes the best cocktail?
Evie McGee
Oh, that's you.
Stephen Colbert
Yeah. 100%. Yeah.
Evie McGee
I mean, because I don't really make cocktails exactly.
Stephen Colbert
I just pour the wine.
Evie McGee
A lot of wine.
Stephen Colbert
I certainly make the most cocktail. Yes. And my best cocktail is probably my Old Fashioned.
Evie McGee
Well, your espresso martini is pretty tasty.
Stephen Colbert
Yeah, but that's so simple. Anybody can make espresso.
Evie McGee
I don't know. I've had them when they're too sweet. And yours are not too sweet.
Stephen Colbert
No, they're not.
Evie McGee
No, they're very good.
Stephen Colbert
Ok. I think it's the Old Fashioned, which takes a while to make, which is the only thing that slows me down. Which is why I make Old Fashioned. Because if it was wine. If it was wine, I would just put like.
Evie McGee
Have you told them about this?
Stephen Colbert
What? No, I haven't told them about that. No one needs to know about this. This is how I like my drinks. This is the liquor. That's the mixer. I'll go. I'll take one of these, please. Thank you. Action. There you go.
Evie McGee
And just a hint of a. Just a citrus.
Stephen Colbert
Exactly. Just show it a line. Well, this has been a delight. Always a pleasure to see you.
Evie McGee
It's so nice to see you.
Stephen Colbert
