Stephen Colbert
Hey, everybody. Stephen Colbert here about to read the copy for our sponsor. This is from our friends at Wonderful Pistachios. And I was the wonderful pistachio spokesman for years. Yeah, I have a real close association with nut meat. Okay. You know what they say when they reach for a snack? Don't hold back. And that's exactly the approach with Wonderful Pistachios. The don't hold back snack. These little wonders are so tasty, it feels like getting away with something. But surprise. Each serving has 6 grams of protein and 0 grams of regret. That's right. No guilt. Just glory, glory in our nuts. Whether it's a satisfying crack of in shell pistachios, and that's capitalized in shell, or the smooth, instant gratification of no shells. No judgment. That's just it. Just eat. No judgment. I take issue with one thing. It's instant gratification. It's super tasty smooth.
Becca
It's a hard nut smooth.
Stephen Colbert
Exactly. I mean, even out of the shell, it's still a nut.
Becca
We can't disparage the nuts. You.
Stephen Colbert
I'm not disparaging the nut. I'm describing the nut.
Becca
Don't disparage any flavors.
Stephen Colbert
I'm not. I am celebrating the pistachio right now. I'm on board. I love pistachios. I love. I love crushed pistachio. Like a pistachio crusted trout. Oh, unbelievable. Instead of a trout amandine, a trout pistachio. Fantastic. Enough butter? Who cares?
Becca
Very good.
Stephen Colbert
And I love pistachio ice cream.
Becca
Have you had the sea salt and vinegar? Wonderful pistachio. It's delicious. I get them.
Stephen Colbert
I didn't even know I get them.
Becca
Before the softball games.
Stephen Colbert
But that's. You see, it's been a while since I've been the spokesman for wonderful pistachios. I didn't realize we'd achieved new pistachio technology.
Becca
Yeah. Yeah.
Kristen Scott Thomas
Wow.
Stephen Colbert
Wonderful pistachios has every snack style covered. Right now. There's an obsession with jalapeno lime. There is an obsession session. It's almost a disorder. It's spicy, it's zesty. It's basically a flavor roller coaster in a nut. Snacking on the go. Grab a bag of no shells. Feeling contemplative and want to work for it a little. So earning it, they're saying if you want to earn your nut, crack open those in shell beauties. Either way, it's snacking like a champ. So the next time hunger strikes, don't hold back. Unless it's a hunger strike. And Then it's important that you do, because whatever you're doing that for, I'm sure it's a worthwhile cause. Snack like you mean it with wonderful pistachios. Visit wonderfulpistachios.com to learn more.
Becca
That was a wonderful.
Stephen Colbert
I wonder what more there is to learn. We just told them so much. We just told them so much about pistachios. But evidently, there's a whole other world. There's an unexplored vista.
Becca
They got a bunch of flavors. They got dill pickle, jalapeno lime, as we learned, smoky barbecue. There's a lot of different flavors.
Stephen Colbert
Wow. And I would not disparage any of them.
Becca
No, no, no.
Stephen Colbert
Bring it on.
Becca
Nothing bad to say.
Stephen Colbert
Nut me, nut. Nut me with nut meat.
Becca
We're nut.
Stephen Colbert
No, we got nothing but nut. Nutty, nutty, nutty, nutty. Talk about, talk about, talk about, talk about nutty. Good.
Kristen Bell
Hi, I'm Kristen Bell, and if you know my husband Dax, then you also know he loves shopping for a car. Selling a car, not so much.

We're really doing this, huh?
Kristen Bell
Thankfully, Carvana makes it easy. Answer a few questions, put in your VIN or license and done. We sold ours in minutes this morning and they'll come pick it up and pay us this afternoon.
Jack Loudon

Kristen Bell
Of course, we kept the favorite.
Jack Loudon
Hello, other Truckee.
Kristen Bell

Stephen Colbert

Jack Loudon
Hi, Becca.
Becca
Hi, Stephen. Thanks so much for doing these with me.
Stephen Colbert
Always a pleasure.
Becca
Thank you for listening, listeners. We appreciate your time.
Stephen Colbert
Sure. We know you have a lot of choices of podcasts and we appreciate your business.
Becca
Yeah. Thank you for being our friends.
Stephen Colbert
Don't forget to fill out the questionnaire at the end. We love your feedback.
Becca
Yes, indeed. So today on the podcast, we have a cast interview that we just did that you flew across the sea to tape.
Jack Loudon
Ooh.
Stephen Colbert
Yeah. This is Slow Horses.
Becca
Yeah.
Stephen Colbert
The cast interview of Slow Horses.
Becca
Yeah. And my favorite joke in the morning that Ariel and Jay do, our head writers, they think that the theme song to Slow Horses is.
Stephen Colbert
Exactly.
Becca
I haven't seen the show. I have to admit, I know that I have to. You've been talking so highly of it.
Stephen Colbert
It's very enjoyable.
Becca
My father, I know he's listening. He wants me to watch it. I gotta watch it.
Stephen Colbert
It's good. It's good. Gary Old. Just Gary Olden is enough. And Jack Loudon is adorable.
Becca
Yeah.
Stephen Colbert
He's adorbs.
Becca
And you guys had a lot of fun. You guys had a lot of fun. But here's a question that I have. I don't think we did this kind of interview before COVID This. Like, you know what? They're not available to come to New York, but I'll go.
Stephen Colbert
I did one. I did one.
Becca
Okay.
Stephen Colbert
I did Robert Duvall.
Becca
Oh, right, right, right, right.
Stephen Colbert
It was in 2019. I mean, I also went to New Zealand, you know, but that was different. I went to New Zealand in 2019, too. I guess we were getting restless in 2019, but we had an opportunity to talk to Duvall. I've always wanted to talk to. He's like. He's sort of. To me, I mean, obviously, an argument can be made that De Niro is the greatest of his generation, but Duvall's really almost a generation before him and an enormous fan of his work. And I leapt to the chance to go down to Virginia to interview him. So that was it. Once we did that went, oh, this is kind of special. Let's do a lot more of this. And then Covid hit, and then you couldn't go anywhere and do anything. And then we pulled out of it with a Spielberg interview. Yeah, but. And John Williams. Right. But I'm. I'm happy to go, you know, change the context, you know, change the venue, make that person feel at home. I love it. I mean, it's an honor to be able to sit down with any of these people, and I don't mind going to their place, man.
Becca
Barbra Streisand's house.
Stephen Colbert
Barbra. Lovely superstar Barbra Streisand. Fantastic.
Becca
Yeah, yeah. So cool. And I remember a really cool decision that we made at, like, the. You know, at the end of COVID If we could say that it's ended, was that a lot. Like, the decision came up after we'd been doing years of zoom interviews, of, hey, there's still sort of a shutdown happening once we were back in the theater and things were safe enough and people were vaccinated, there's like, what if in this new world where some of us are working from home, if the celebrities could still zoom in to you at the studio with the full audience, and you said, no, absolutely not.
Jack Loudon
Yeah.
Becca
And I think that was a great call.
Stephen Colbert
Yeah.
Becca
No, but you going on these remotes is so interesting and fun and a great way to do it, and then the audience still gets to see it all together in the theater.
Stephen Colbert
We get to watch it together, which is nice.
Becca
Yeah, yeah. But this was a big Trip to London. You went on.
Stephen Colbert
Oh, God, it was fantastic. Gary Oldman did an hour with Gary and then did an hour with these guys. And Gary and saw friends, you know, had some great lunches and dinners and fish and chips. Yep, exactly.
Becca
Yeah.
Stephen Colbert
One another got me, Went to Fortnum and Mason's, you know, whatever. Got my tea.
Becca
Nice.
Kristen Scott Thomas
It was lovely.
Becca
Beautiful.
Stephen Colbert
And my wife is a crazy Anglophile.
Becca
Nice.
Stephen Colbert
Crazy Anglophile, which is growing up in an Irish American family.
Kristen Scott Thomas
It's difficult.
Becca
Yeah, Difficult.
Kristen Scott Thomas
Difficult.
Stephen Colbert
Difficult.
Becca
Yeah, Difficult, Difficult. Lemon difficult.
Jack Loudon
Yeah, yeah, exactly.
Becca
All right, well, this is the Slow Horses cast. Excited for season five. Enjoy September.
Stephen Colbert
Enjoy.
Becca
Enjoy.
Stephen Colbert
Hey, everybody. Welcome back, folks. If you watch the show, you know that earlier this year I traveled across to interview Gary Oldman. We had a fantastic conversation and I was pleased to find out that only half of what he said had to be bleeped by CBS censors. Oldman has been over in London to film the Apple TV series Slow Horses, in which he plays Jackson Lamb, the curmudgeonly head of a delinquent MI5 unit. But he is just one member of an incredible cast that also features Kristen Scott Thomas as the flinty MI5 Deputy Director Diana Taverner, Jonathan Price, who portrays retired British intelligence officer David Cartwright, and his grandson River Cartwright, played by Jack Loudon. So I was thrilled when this wonderful group of actors agreed to sit down with me for a conversation. I'm happy to say I'm sitting down right now with some of the cast of Slow Horses. Jonathan Pryce, Kristen Scott Thomas, Gary Oldman and Jack Louden. Thanks for sitting down with me, Horses.
Jack Loudon
Yeah, thanks for coming here, Jack.
Stephen Colbert
What was it like to join such a storied cast?
Kristen Scott Thomas
I mean, insane. It still is. I, I, I still feel slightly sad that I've never been in a situation where I've been in a scene with all three of them at the same time. I don't think I've even been in a scene with you two at the same time.
Jack Loudon
I've never been in the same with J, have I? You have been in a scene with him. I was in the back of the taxi.
Stephen Colbert
It was a lot scene. It was a memorable performance. Jonathan, that's a hell of a review.
Jack Loudon
His work is. His rule is never look behind darling. Yeah, keep looking at the camera. I was sat behind.
Stephen Colbert
Gary, what's your favorite thing about playing Jackson Lamb? Besides not having to go into hair and makeup?
Jack Loudon
Yeah, yeah.
Jonathan Pryce
He spends hours in hair and makeup. That's the only time I ever see you.
Jack Loudon
It is.
Stephen Colbert
Yeah. But what this. You look like Jackson Lamb to me right now. Don't say nobody does. Put him in a trench coat. Put him in a dirty trench coat. Take off the glasses. I suppose.
Jack Loudon
Yeah, I was. Really. Cause I didn't see Gary properly for three seasons. And when I went into the makeup trailer, I was. I couldn't believe he was actually not wearing makeup and he didn't have a fat suit on.
Kristen Scott Thomas
Wait, did you have a fat suit? Did you have a fat suit in fifth season?
Stephen Colbert
In the first season?
Kristen Scott Thomas
Did you have a fat suit on in the first season?
Jack Loudon
No, no, I had done. I thought. No, I had come directly from lunch. I came directly from a film, and I put on a few pounds, and then this was presented to me, and it was this scruffy fellow who's overweight and an alcoholic, what have you. So I just thought, well, I just kind of. I just may as well keep it. But once you've got it, my God, is it hard to get rid of it?
Stephen Colbert
Yeah, I find it difficult to watch Jackson Lamb eat.
Jack Loudon
Yeah.
Stephen Colbert
Have any of you had scenes where you have to watch Jackson Lamb eat noodles or anything?
Kristen Scott Thomas
Yeah.
Stephen Colbert
Is it difficult?
Kristen Scott Thomas
I. I have that unfortunate time I.
Stephen Colbert
Have to put it on mute.
Kristen Scott Thomas
Yeah.
Stephen Colbert
And just read the subtitles. For some of you, that.
Kristen Scott Thomas
But you only have to watch it once. Unless you rewatch it. I think I watched it. What did you do?
Jack Loudon
10, 11 takes, 17 bowls.
Kristen Scott Thomas
17 bowls of noodles.
Jack Loudon
Yeah.
Kristen Scott Thomas
If you.
Jack Loudon
Be broke for lunch.
Kristen Scott Thomas
I mean, I. I was there at.
Jack Loudon
The front of the queue.
Kristen Scott Thomas
I just don't know what, like, what was wrong with the 12th bowl?
Jack Loudon
I mean, I don't know what was wrong. I just. I just had another marathon. What was I eating? Spaghetti Bolognese.
Kristen Scott Thomas
Yeah.
Jack Loudon
The other day. That was in a.
Kristen Scott Thomas
It's always very sloppy food.
Jack Loudon
Yeah.
Kristen Scott Thomas
You're never eating, like, a chicken schnitzel or something, are you? Sloppy.
Jack Loudon
A Kit Kat or something.
Kristen Scott Thomas
Yeah. It'll be ramen or Twix. Yeah.
Stephen Colbert
For the fans out there. When are Traviner and Jackson Lamb just gonna go ahead and kiss?
Kristen Scott Thomas
Oh, yeah.
Jonathan Pryce
Oh, God, yeah.
Jack Loudon
I used to always tease her. I would always say, have you read book eight? You read book seven? She goes, no, I haven't got to that yet. Oh, my God. We finally get together, we tear the sheets up.
Jonathan Pryce
I'm so looking forward to that bit.
Stephen Colbert
Well, you want to know who the. What the backstory is. There's so much history between these two people that you don't know anything about.
Kristen Scott Thomas
Yeah, I reckon they did in Berlin.
Jonathan Pryce
I think there Was something going on?
Kristen Scott Thomas
Yes, I reckon. I reckon the.
Jonathan Pryce
I don't know whether it was that fancy.
Jack Loudon
Fancied a bit of a rough.
Jonathan Pryce
No, I just think there's some sort of. There's something. There's some story we haven't found yet. Way back.
Jack Loudon
Yeah, a long time ago.
Jonathan Pryce
Some digging that needs to be done.
Stephen Colbert
Gary, you're great at accents, great at voices. We have a Welshman, someone from Cornwall. We have a Scotsman over here. Can you do each of these regional accents? Can you do them?
Kristen Scott Thomas
You can do Scottish.
Jack Loudon
Yes, I suppose. Saw I sometimes do that. Bill Patterson, lovely.
Kristen Scott Thomas
Talking about a. What is it?
Jack Loudon
And we're looking at a bird on a hill. Yeah. And then. I don't know. Never. I don't think I've ever heard a Cornish accent.
Jonathan Pryce
No, but you don't have one, do you? No, I just do posh. Posher and posh.
Jack Loudon
Can we hear your Welsh? Well, well, I'm just going down the shop. Is it a bit like that? Yes, it's all right. Not bad, is it? Not bad. Off the cuff. Yeah.
Stephen Colbert
Can any of you do Gary? Oh, yeah, yeah.
Jack Loudon
All right. I do him in the audio books.
Stephen Colbert
You've all done. Have you all done American accents?
Jack Loudon
Yeah.
Jonathan Pryce
Yes.
Jack Loudon
Yeah?
Stephen Colbert
Yes. All right.
Jonathan Pryce
Oh, no. Really? Is this an American accent competition?
Stephen Colbert
Yes.
Jonathan Pryce
Oh, God.
Stephen Colbert
All right. I have some things that only Americans would say. And I'm curious. You can pick one of these. Pick one of these you wish to say. Mm.
Jonathan Pryce
Hey, sweetheart, can I get extra sour cream on these fully loaded potato skins?
Kristen Scott Thomas
Love it. Love it.
Jack Loudon
That's right.
Stephen Colbert
Flawless.
Jonathan Pryce
Very proud of that.
Kristen Scott Thomas
Flawless.
Stephen Colbert
Flawless.
Jack Loudon
Yeah, perfect, dude.
Kristen Scott Thomas
You know some of these? Cause you're half American now.
Jack Loudon
Dude, could you do me a solid and hook me up with a ticket for the Limp Bizkit concert? It's gonna be tight.
Stephen Colbert
Jack.
Kristen Scott Thomas
I'm drowning in medical debt because of my out of pocket. Max is high. So this is my deductible. For some reason, the US is the only developed country without universal health care, bro.
Stephen Colbert
You hit some black ice there, skinny. A bit un. Universal. Spooky. Universal health care.
Kristen Scott Thomas
Health care.
Stephen Colbert
God bless America. And it's universal healthcare. All right, Jonathan, your. Your turn, Your turn.
Jack Loudon
Just crash it down. My buddy Brent is in finance. He's got some sick deeds on the crypto market.
Kristen Scott Thomas
Yeah, yeah.
Jonathan Pryce
Sounds, I think, mine like Fran Howe.
Stephen Colbert
We'll be right back with more from the cast of Slow Horses. Everybody stick around.
Gary Oldman

Stephen Colbert
We now return to the second and what many are already calling the final part of my interview with a cast of slow horses. Who would win in a fight. James Bond or Jackson Lamb.
Kristen Scott Thomas
Jackson Lamb.
Jonathan Pryce
Jackson Lamb.
Stephen Colbert
Why?
Kristen Scott Thomas
Because Jackson wouldn't turn up. He wouldn't be at the fight.
Jack Loudon
I'd still be in bed, but yeah, I'd be on the city.
Kristen Scott Thomas
Bonna be there doing sit ups. You'd just be sat across the road with a chippy.
Stephen Colbert
Could he take James Bond in a drinking contest?
Kristen Scott Thomas
Yeah, okay.
Jack Loudon
Yeah, I think he could probably do that. Yeah.
Kristen Scott Thomas
Yeah, you could take Moby Dick in a drinking.
Stephen Colbert
Before we go, I just want to settle. You're all accomplished and brilliant actors. Who among you is the best actor?
Becca
Me.
Kristen Scott Thomas
Yeah.
Stephen Colbert
Come to agreement? I think, yeah, it's Jonathan.
Jack Loudon
Yeah.
Stephen Colbert
Shucks. And since we know that acting is lying. Are you acting right now?
Jack Loudon
Yeah, yeah. No, I think I was a big, big, huge fan of Jonathan's for years. Seen him do a ton of things on the stage.
Jonathan Pryce
It's amazing when you look and you see a career like yours or yours, you know, these careers that go back a long time, let's be frank. And even right at the beginning, the things that you were doing were so sort of important. It's quite impressive.
Kristen Scott Thomas
It's also quite sad. I've felt this genuinely recently. The actors of my generation and below is that these three are examples of actors who have played a multitude of parts and some of the hardest parts, you know, in classical text on stage and actors now, I know people talk about this a lot, but actors now are expected to be the finished article very quickly because of this sort of slew of opportunities. Now there is actually, you know, so much content and they're stuck straight right in the middle and pumped to the stars and they're not ready. And it genuinely is a joy to go to work with these three and you can feel the sort of weight of. Not the weight of experience that they have. And when you tell, when I first started working with you and you would tell me the parts that you played in the Glasgow Citizens Theatre and it's just, it's just not happening. Now it's just not happening. You've got to be. You're just sticking these young kids in these huge roles.
Jonathan Pryce
Yep.
Kristen Scott Thomas
And most of them are pretty crap. They really are.
Jonathan Pryce
And you only get one shot, really?
Kristen Scott Thomas
And you get one shot. And it's. The pressure is so huge. The muscles that you guys have let. The muscles that you built up. And you can see it every day when we come go on sets. My favorite thing about being in this is just watching good actors.
Stephen Colbert
Do you still go to set sometimes when you aren't in the scene just to watch?
Kristen Scott Thomas
Yep. Yeah. Sometimes they don't know I'm there. Sometimes they do know I'm there. It's my, it's my favorite thing. But I, I've said it before. My favorite, favorite thing is watching three people of your caliber work out what you're going to do. It's the little moments in, in between, in between takes when I can watch them trying to work out what they're going to do. That's just, that's fantastic to watch. They should sell tickets for that. It's great.
Stephen Colbert
Well, that'll be the next show. Behind the scenes.
Jack Loudon
Behind the scenes.
Stephen Colbert
Thanks all. Thanks, horses. Thanks again to Jonathan, Christian, Gary and Jack. Season 5 of Slow Horses premieres September 24th on Apple TV.
