Current Time.Public Services and the Role of Firefighters in SocietyFirefighters are so integrated into our lives that we rarely stop to think about their significance. A hundred years ago, there wasn’t a fire department to call when disaster struck. If your house caught fire, you had to handle it yourself. Phones didn’t become common in homes until the 20th century, and before that, people had no quick way to alert anyone in a crisis.Public services like fire departments changed everything. They gave us the freedom to feel safe and sleep at night without the constant fear of natural disasters, human failures, mistakes, or other events destroying everything we built. This sense of security freed up time for hobbies, innovation, and the development of modern life. Now imagine if these services disappeared. If a city decided to cut funding and shut down the fire department entirely, would we really grasp the consequences? Would we understand what it’s like to live without that safety net?The next time someone suggests cutting funds or reducing fire department personnel, tell them to consider closing the fire department completely to save money. Maybe then they’ll better understand their recommendation. To read the story they talk about, click the link: It Doesn’t Smell Like Teen Spirit, It Smells Like Smoke. Please fasten your seatbelts and subscribe.Unlock my potential to write the next great chapter in the most extraordinary story ever told. Current Time. They Breathe These Smells Every DayThe smell of fire. The smell of ashes. The smell of burned plastic. The smell of burned metal. The smell of blood. The smell of burned bodies. These are the smells firefighters and rescue teams face every day on their job. They don’t breathe these smells only during the current LA wildfires or other massive disasters. They breathe them in their daily work, year after year, sometimes for decades. These smells linger, and they don’t fade. Their memory is always there. What happens to a person who breathes in these memories every day for 25, 30, or 40 years? How do these relentless experiences with destruction and tragedy shape their mental health? Can we even begin to compare the weight they carry with the stress of any office job?kvalnews’s IG postMost of us believe we’d run into a fire to save someone we love. But would you do it for a stranger? Firefighters do this every day. They take these risks not because it’s just a job; they choose to do so. There are many ways to earn a living, but they choose to risk their lives, often saving others by risking their own lives. To read the story they talk about, click the link: It Doesn’t Smell Like Teen Spirit, It Smells Like Smoke. Please fasten your seatbelts and subscribe.Unlock my potential to write the next great chapter in the most extraordinary story ever told. Current Time.Mental health is not just the weight of individuals; it burdens entire nations. Hate, hostility, and resentment passed from generation to generation, fueled by culture, shaped by traditions, and reinforced by societal norms, are more than an educational problem. They are a national mental health crisis. To hate a group or culture without knowing a single individual from that group destroys not only the collective soul but also the mental well-being of individuals within those societies.Carrying these emotions for generations while fueling the flames and keeping hatred alive cripples the mind and prevents healing. It creates a cycle of destruction that spirals further with every generation. In the same way that experts have developed therapies for organizations, we need a new kind of expertise to heal nations. Beyond traditional therapy, groups must learn daily affirmations that let go of the past and focus on building their future. Imagine memorizing affirmations of constructive energy rather than destructive emotions. Imagine teaching nations how to move on. It is not just a question of how to do it; it is a question of when we will do it because we are running out of time and have to do something. To fully understand the flow and connections between these articles, follow this order:* Start with 600 Years of Rule Made the Ottomans Blind to Changes, the story that inspired Nathalie Martinek, PhD, to write her article. It sets the stage by exploring how the Ottoman Empire’s leadership and societal structures shaped the region.* Next, read We All Came from Somewhere. It provides deeper insights into the history of displacement and its impact on different communities.* Then, read The Revolt of the Invisible Children, where Nathalie Martinek PhD applies a psychological lens to the burdens carried by the Arab world, drawing parallels between historical neglect and its lasting impact on communities.* Finally, dive into my response, The Legacy of Neglect and How History Shapes the Arab World Today, where I expand on her insights and discuss the historical and cultural influences shaping the Arab world today. Each article builds on the last, offering a deeper understanding of history’s role in shaping societies and the possibilities for healing. Please fasten your seatbelts and subscribe.Unlock my potential to write the next great chapter in the most extraordinary story ever told. Current Time. It’s fascinating to consider why we struggle to describe what we read or listen to. I asked a few friends how they would explain The Liat Show to someone who had never heard of it. Their first response was to explain why they read or listen to it, basically recommending it. But when I repeated my question and asked them to describe it, they paused, and some were even at a loss for words. It turns out this isn’t just about The Liat Show. They also found it hard to explain the essence of a platform of newsletters or mailing lists. They didn’t know how to explain when to follow someone on Substack and when to subscribe. So, what’s the difference? Writers and long-time readers usually understand this, but for new users, it takes time to figure it out. As Substack grows and welcomes more people, maybe it’s time to guide them. Like an orientation day, explaining the value of being a free or paid subscriber and when it’s enough just to follow someone. The hardest part for me was explaining this to investors. At first, I thought they weren’t subscribing because they didn’t like my content. That sounds like a reasonable explanation and makes sense. But the real reason was different. Many didn’t understand what was in it for them. Tech investors, who are used to analyzing companies like Substack, couldn’t switch their mindsets and think from the perspective of the platform’s users. They saw it from a business angle, not as subscribers who enjoy specific content. For many, art is a painting or a sculpture, something you buy and display. Music used to be considered art when consumers purchased vinyl records or CDs; they had a physical object attached to the music, but not anymore. Platforms like Spotify, YouTube, or iTunes aren’t perceived as art anymore. They’re just subscription services where the value of paying is to avoid commercials interrupting you every two seconds. It’s more about avoiding distractions than valuing the content itself.I keep searching for the best metaphor. For example, more than just paying for content, an annual subscription to a newsletter on Substack or a membership on Patreon is like buying a museum membership. It supports a broader mission and represents something meaningful. It’s not just about the exhibits you see but about supporting the museum as an organization. Still, I wonder what the best analogy is. What analogy do you use?Recap podcasts of the main topics we covered so far and an index for the list of stories and podcasts for each topic.* Discovering Israeli Music Through NotebookLM with Fortis Sakharof and Ofra Haza on The Liat Show* The Liat Show Podcast Redefining Food Culture with NotebookLMPlease fasten your seatbelts and subscribe.Unlock my potential to write the next great chapter in the most extraordinary story ever told. Current Time.History is not just a series of random events. Every event is connected, shaping the beliefs, behaviors, and emotions of the generations that followed. These connections, whether rooted in respect, admiration, or resentment, still matter today because they continue to shape the world around us.As I wrote to Nathalie in the comments: "Maybe more leaders in mental health need to point out to the public the high number of Arab entrepreneurs in this field and ask why so many are drawn to this area. Like other successful founders who share personal stories about why they started their companies, these stories need to be voiced loudly, especially about the cultural impact on mental health. Solutions come from pain. Just like Israel became a cyber empire to survive terror, maybe the Arab world can become a mental health empire and show us how nations can heal together, not just individuals.Could universities, especially psychology faculties, lead public discussions about national trauma? Is it possible or even practical to develop therapy on a national level? Sometimes, it feels like the flames of conflict are so high that a collective approach is needed. Who can teach Arab nations to start their day with ten minutes of meditation? Is there a way to prescribe alpha wave music three times a day with meals? Who can be the grown-up parent they will actually listen to, teaching affirmations like, ‘Whatever happened is in the past; let it go’?Can social media platforms push a ‘calm down’ message at the start of videos? Educators and parents know that sometimes you need to say, ‘Shut up, go to your room, and calm down. We will talk about it tomorrow in a civil manner.’ How can we apply that on social media? Because these endless loops of hate keep adding fuel to the fire, and the algorithms only amplify the problems instead of helping solve them."We need help. Leaders must step forward and lead the way. Nations need healing just as individuals do. With all the wars and destruction around us, there must be a way to heal entire societies. Without it, this cycle will never end, not for Jews, not for Arabs, and not for the West.To fully understand the flow and connections between these articles, follow this order:* Start with 600 Years of Rule Made the Ottomans Blind to Changes, the story that inspired Nathalie Martinek, PhD, to write her article. Current Time.Learning about culture through its food is a unique journey. Food teaches us about nutrition, survival, and the importance of what we eat in shaping a culture. It’s more than just a culinary experience; it’s a journey through history.Learning about Israeli culture through its food is even more fascinating. Living in the diaspora for 2,000 years, blending with other cultures, and following kosher dietary laws shaped Jewish cuisine into something unique. Each ethnicity brought a staple dish to Israel, representing the history of the country they lived in and how Judaism adapted to it. Every dish tells a story of survival and tradition, taking us on a journey through time and across nations. What makes Israeli cuisine so unique is the blend of the past and the present. The combination of ethnicities and flavors creates a fusion no other place on Earth has. From street food to middle-class restaurants to high-end dining, the variety is unmatched. Israel may not have Michelin-starred restaurants officially, but some of our chefs have earned stars abroad with the same brands. No matter where or what you choose to eat, satisfaction is guaranteed. After introducing schnitzel and bourekas, the question is what comes next. Some ideas for upcoming stories include Israeli signature dishes like shakshuka, jachnun, chicken soup, couscous, or Israeli breakfast. Now it’s your turn to help me decide. Current Time. What We’ve Discovered in Israeli Music So FarWalking together down the music lane, we’ve uncovered roots in Yemen, Turkey, and Greece, where Israeli talents seamlessly merge pop, rock, and electronic music. This fusion is the secret sauce of great Israeli musicians. The education and traditions preserved in Jewish homes for generations across the diaspora meet the new influences absorbed in Israel through radio stations, global music trends, and exposure to pop, rock, and electronic sounds. In this podcast episode, Mark and Samantha reflect on the path we’ve walked so far in this Journey of Music Through Cultures. How often do we stop to think about the impact music has on our lives and what it represents in our culture? Fortis, Sakharof, and Ofra Haza’s music tell stories that transcend borders. It’s music that anyone, anywhere, can feel, even without understanding the words.Berry Sakharof’s music takes us into unexpected places, blending rock with Turkish melodies that reflect a fascinating cultural exchange. His song BoomPam, performed in Greek, is a perfect match for Howard Stern’s audience, with its playful yet intricate sound fitting his eclectic taste.Ofra Haza’s music carries the soul of Yemeni traditions into the modern world of pop. Her iconic Im Nin’Alu isn’t just a song; it’s a global anthem that deserves airtime on stations like iHeartRadio today more than ever. Her fusion of heritage and innovation has the power to inspire a whole new generation. Here’s a challenge to radio stations across the U.S.: Take a chance! Play these artists on your shows. Fortis, Sakharof, and Haza have shown us that music doesn’t just cross borders; it breaks them down. You could be the leaders we desperately need, helping cultures and nations connect in a neutral and universal space.Thank you for listening and subscribing to my show. It will be more beautiful than you could ever imagine.LiatIn this journey, I weave together episodes from my life with the rich tapestry of Israeli culture through music, food, arts, entrepreneurship, and more. I write over the weekends and evenings and publish these episodes as they unfold, almost like a live performance. Each episode is part of a set focused on a specific topic, though sometimes I release standalone episodes. A set is released over several days to make it easier for you to read during your busy workday. If one episode catches your attention, make sure to read the entire set to get the whole picture. Although these episodes are released in sets, you can read the entire newsletter from the beginning, as it flows smoothly, like music to your ears - or, in this case, your eyes. The Liat Show is a reader-supported publication.
